High Rocks Park
While jumping off rocks might not be a parent’s idea of wholesome summer fun, you can rest assured because this spot has lifeguards posted from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Consider it the perfect spot for kids to be a little daring. On the Clackamas River in Gladstone, right off Highway 205, High Rocks Park a popular spot and is often busy during the hottest parts of the day. While the lifeguard makes it a safer swimming hole, please make sure your kids are strong swimmers and stay close by, as the river's currents and rocky terrain has risks.

Hood River Waterfront Park

Lost Lake
A perfect view of Mt. Hood graces your every splash at this lake deep in the woods. Grab a campsite for the night or come on a weekday to beat the crowds. Trust us, the jewel-tone water is irresistible. Rent a paddle boat or canoe (with life jackets) and get out on the water. When you dry off, an easy hike around the lake is a fun way to see it from another point of view.

This collection of deep pools is more than just a picturesque spot—it’s one of the best local swimming holes around. With an easy hike, a two-story bridge, picnic spots and that deep blue water, you can see why it’s so popular with Portland families. Our advice? Arrive early to claim your rock.

Silver Falls State Park
Home to some of Oregon’s most majestic waterfalls, you can find plenty of opportunities to get wet at this park. Walton Beach
For a classic beach day without the drive to the coast, Walton Beach on Sauvie Island is the ticket. Spend a day on the river watching for eagles, counting cargo ships and splashing the sand away. It’s a popular spot that doesn’t usually feel too crowded—there’s still plenty of room to fly a kite. Keep in mind that it’s still 9 miles once you get to the island, and roads can be busy on sunny weekends. A $10 daily parking pass is available at the Cracker Barrel Store right off the bridge to the island. Psst...if you’ve heard rumors of a clothing-optional beach, they’re true. Collins Beach is also at the north end of the island, but it’s much further north, so there’s no risk of accidentally ending up there if you don’t want to.

Sellwood Riverfront
Make sure to fit in an end-of-summer trip to this awesome swimming spot. Decades ago you might never have thought to swim in the Willamette, but it’s been cleaned up a lot and is now just fine for water play. One of the closest access points is the Sellwood Riverfront. The beach is more of a pebble-sand thing, and you might have to share it with some pooches, but for a quick afternoon dip’n’splash, it can’t be beat.

Oxbow Regional Park
On the banks of the Sandy River, Oxbow has plenty of sandy areas to enjoy. Because of the wide swaths of beach and the calm, shallow river, it’s a great choice for kids who want to play and splash. Combine a trip with some of the trails through the nearby forest, or cast off your kayak for a float. But please leave your pups at home (this is a no dogs park), and remember the day use fee is $5.

George Rogers Park
This wide Lake Oswego beach on the Willamette River keeps very popular with families on the hottest days of the year. While it’s not huge, there’s plenty of space to fit in, and the nearby park with amenities like a playground, restrooms, picnic areas and sports fields means there’s something for everyone.

Dabney State Park
Downriver from Oxbow, Dabney makes a fun day trip with kids. Sand dunes, clean water and a small river offshoot practically beg kids to come explore. Because it’s such a calm spot on the river, it’s very popular to launch inner tubes from and can get crowded when the weather is pitch perfect. But you can always escape to the rest of the park, with an old orchard, ponds, disc golf and forest hikes waiting. There is a $5 day use fee.

Henry Hagg Lake at Scoggins Valley Park
A human-made lake with lots of beaches to choose from, Henry Hagg is surprisingly big, and the water is pleasantly warm. Tucked outside of town on the west side, it’s a beautiful area. The beaches are well-used and offer grills and boat ramps, as the lake is a popular boating destination. If your first beach choice is too crowded, you can drive around the lake until you locate your perfect spot. There is a $7 entrance fee.

Broughton Beach
Located off Marine Drive in the north end of Portland, this popular beach offers unparalleled access to the Columbia River as jets fly by overhead. It makes an excellent option for a no-plan day at the beach.  There is $5 day use fee.

Blue Lake Regional Park

As if the original animated version wasn’t enough entertainment for the whole family, Disney went and remade the classic with a live-action 2019 version (rated PG). We honestly recommend watching both–kids will love the animated antics of the original, but the realistic look of the cubs in the remake is too adorable to be missed. Word of warning that Mufasa’s fate may prompt a few tears in more sensitive littles!

Charlotte’s Web is a long-beloved book that teaches children about the importance of good friends and believing in yourself, while touching on the impermanence of life. It’s a great film with a diverse hero at the forefront to look up to, with an excellent soundtrack to boot. Watch it before the sequel comes out later this year! Based on the book by Roald Dahl, this classic story about a brilliant young girl with telekinetic powers who is frequently ignored and brushed aside by the grown ups in her life is a perfect movie for 7-9-year-olds. Kids will be thrilled to see all the creative ways little Matilda manages to get revenge and stick up for herself and her beloved teacher, Miss Honey. Make sure to read the book first!

It only gets wilder from there as Chihiro has to figure out how to reverse the spell that transformed her parents, all the while having to interact with supernatural creatures—some friendly and others foes.

Some of the action and fighting sequences may be a bit much for some of the younger kiddos, so tread carefully.

It’s a wonderful story about the bond of siblings, and with a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie for 7-9-year-olds will be sure to please the whole family.

If you’re looking to prompt a conversation about climate change and/or the importance of caring for our environment with your kiddos, this is the movie! It’s a cautionary tale about what might happen to our planet if we continue to pollute it to the point of being inhabitable, through the eyes of a sweet little robot. 5. Buckle Up for a Drive-in Movie

Grunions are a species of silver-colored fish that leave the water at night to spawn on beaches during spring and summer in SoCal. Spawning occurs on nights with full moons and new moons after high tides and continues for many hours. The best runs usually occur on the second and third nights of the four-evening period. Be sure to bring a flashlight for easier spotting and a jacket in case it's chilly. The summer movie lineup includes cult classics and new releases, including some Chicago-based favorites. Wednesday Night Live!

Once again, The Davis Theater will partner with the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce to convert Ainslie Arts Plaza into a beer garden and outdoor cinema for free movie nights on select dates this summer. Each week a different beer will be featured, along with wine and other refreshments for purchase. Films begin approximately 30 minutes after sunset. Dates/shows to be determined.

17 Best Winter Activities with Kids

From winter lights and stroller hikes to skate parks and epic playgrounds, these are some of the best winter activities and things to do around San Francisco

One of the perks about living in the Bay Area is that winter is a pretty awesome time—you can take the kids hiking one day and play in the snow the next. Plus, there’s always fun to be had in Golden Gate Park. Or explore SF’s best hot chocolate and the best Italian delis in the Bay Area and determine a winner (at least in your family). Of course, you can’t ignore our world-class art exhibits—a great way to get some culture and head indoors when the weather is frightful. Here are some of our favorite family activities for when the temps top out at an oh-so-frigid 60 degrees.

1. Visit Cal Academy’s outdoor play space, Wander Woods, where hands-on playing is encouraged—crawl through a log, build a den, run through a maze, and more.

2. Last chance to visit SFMOMA's Diego Rivera's America—its 6-month run ends Jan. 3). Here you can see the most in-depth examination of the artist’s work in over two decades, bringing together more than 150 of Rivera’s paintings, frescoes, and drawings. 

3. Check out some of the Bay Area's most famous wildlife—there are tons of great spots for seeing what the sea lions, whales, and elephant seals are up to morning, noon, and night. 

4. We love Entwined, a forest of winter lights, in Peacock Meadow at Golden Gate Park through Mar.

5. Get outdoors for a hike. Whether it's a stroller workout hike, an all-access hike for wheelchairs and strollers, a hike with the littles, or our top winter hikes—we’ve got you covered from Marin to Santa Cruz.

6. San Francisco has some of the most epic playgrounds around. Pick a sunny day and start checking off our list of 30 favorites, like the updated Panhandle Playground.

7. It's newt season! Also called orange-bellies, these adorable amphibians emerge during the wetter months of winter but just look, don’t touch—these guys are poisonous. Join a guided newt hike in Briones Regional Park or in San Ramon.

8. Burn off some energy by letting little groms warm up and drop in at one of these cool skateparks.

9. Craving some snow? These spots nearby are great for tubing and sledding or check out our Tahoe winter guide for the full snow experience.

10. Winter is a great time for birding in the Bay Area. Join a guided walk at the Sunol Regional Wilderness or explore on your own in Bodega Bay or Marin County.

11. See the Bay from the water. There are tons of opportunities to try kayaking with the kids—a sunny winter day is a perfect excuse to try.

12. Explore the Magical Bridge Playground in Redwood City.

13. Pack up the car with blankets and snacks and take the kids out for a drive-in movie.

14. Check out the ladybug migration in Redwood Regional Park. They are there in full force for the next few months.  

15. The next California King Tides (the highest and lowest tides of the year) will be Dec. 23-24, 2022 and Jan. 21-22, 2023. Mark your calendars to explore the coastline and tidepools near San Francisco during the lowest tide of the year—exposing sea life that is normally hidden. 

16. Hike and read a book at the same time at Presidio's Story Walk.

17. Go on a self guided tour of organic fields, the Discovery Garden, and animal pens at Farm Discovery.
