Laughter is the best medicine for what ails you—kids

Parenting memes are the antidote for a tough day (or even an average one), and we’re betting there are a few out there you can really relate to. From “Yes! This happened to me five minutes ago!” to out-and-out guffaws because it happens every night, give yourself five minutes (lock yourself in the bathroom if necessary) and give yourself a good laugh over these hysterical mom memes.

It never fails.

PG ratings just aren’t what they used to be.

Make Valentine’s Day extra sweet for your littles by ditching the standard box of chocolates from the local grocery store and picking up something unique from a locally-owned business. From LEGO trade-in opportunities to cool toys and books and even Sprinkles cupcakes, here are our top picks for spots in DFW to snag a totally creative gift for Valentine’s Day.

Dallas Farmer’s Market

Gabby Cullen

This year-round market has produce and food items for sale in the outdoor pavilion, but it also boasts an impressive indoor marketplace filled with locally-owned shops and businesses. Opt for a fun slogan shirt from Bullzerk, cookies from Chelles Macarons or bath fizzies from Abundantly Aromatic. Many of these shops are doing online ordering and curbside pickup.

The pandemic has hit everyone hard, but trying to supplement schooling is definitely one of the biggest challenges parents have faced. Cara Zelas knows this challenge and she knows it well. A mother of tow, an educator and an entrepreneur, Cara saw a specific gap in the social-emotional learning critical to the preschool age and decided to do something about it. Enter, the Kindness Learning Company and The Big World of Little Dude’s school-in-a-box. Read on to find out how it can help your child and children in need thrive.

As Cara says, “When I arrived in the U.S. nearly a decade ago, I spent a lot of time teaching and assisting teachers in the classroom, and it was there that I had a stark reminder about the importance of themes such as kindness, empathy, courage and manners. When learning about the core curriculum and other standardized teaching platforms, I noticed a gap and these social and emotional themes largely missing. It was out of this realization that I formed the Kindness Learning Company and from there, developed our first book series, The Big World of Little Dude.”

The books aim at teaching the core principles of topics like kindness, empathy, respect, manners and feelings. But with COVID-19 closures, Cara knew she needed to do something more. So she partnered with ACS (children’s services), New Yorkers for Children (501c3), to create school-in-the-box curriculum that not only entertains kids, but offers them stimulation, learning and support. Plus, for every school-in-the-box purchased, she donates a box and curriculum to children in the care of ACS & NYFC.

Every school-in-the-box offers:
  • 50 individual items that correspond to Little Dude’s “At-Home Lessons” curriculum.
  • Neatly organized and compartmentalized materials to make teaching out-of-the-box easy and enjoyable.
  • Ideas and tips to ‘up-cycle’ the box for additional activities with your child.

Check out The Big World of Little Dude for an array of at-home lessons geared toward preschoolers, including the complete school-in-the-box series, all of Cara’s wonderful books, and a way to donate even more. Lesson range from $49 to $150 for the complete box. Remember, not only will you help your preschooler thrive, you also help another little one out there get the learning tools they need.

Target Announces Same Day Delivery Up to Christmas Eve

Our new series, Tiny Birth Stories, is aimed at sharing real-life stories from our readers to our readers. In just 100 words or less, we’re bringing you the raw, the funny and the heartwarming stories you’ve lived while bringing babies into the world. Here are five stories that will have you laughing, crying and nodding your head in solidarity.

My daughter is with the band by Roxanne

I was about to go on stage at a dive bar at a friend’s concert, to receive a thank-you gift for supporting them, when my water broke dramatically. I climbed the stairs to the stage and informed my friend quietly. He then shouted in shock into the microphone, “Holy ****, your water just broke!” I greeted the crowd, and announced that I was on my way to the hospital. My daughter was born three hours later, five days before her due date. The band visited us in the maternity ward the next day, and my daughter was featured on their next album cover.

The surprise of twins by Melissa S.

The ultrasound tech says, “oh, I see the problem!” As I try not to panic, she then says, “It’s twins!” So. Many. Emotions. But wait, I’m an identical twin! Twins don’t have twins, it’s supposed to skip a generation. It didn’t and what was supposed to be a birth center birth, became a home birth. Fast forward to 38 weeks plus 3 days at 1:05 am and 1:26 am we welcomed Natalie and Lacey into our newly purchased and renovated home. When they joined our family, we went from 2 little girls to 4. Twins are considered high risk and because of our birth center’s state certification, they couldn’t continue my care. After 3 Doctors told me I couldn’t deliver them naturally, we found a midwife that had actually birthed her own twins at home! Definitely double delight!

My experience giving birth during COVID-19 by Lauren F.

When my sister-in-law gave birth early in the pandemic, April 2020, I felt sorry for her but thought surely by the time I had my baby that summer things would be normal. I went to doctor’s appointments by myself; my husband wasn’t allowed. I always stood in the waiting room—afraid of seats other patients used—and stripped my clothes and showered once home. When I packed my hospital bag, I threw in a coveted canister of Clorox wipes, snacks so my husband wouldn’t have to leave the room, and of course hand sanitizer. My two older children would have to wait to meet their sibling; no visitors were allowed in the hospital. People asked if it was difficult to labor while wearing a mask. Truthfully, I was so consumed with the wellbeing of my baby, whose heart rate dropped to 50 beats per minute at one point during labor, that I didn’t notice the fabric on my face. I don’t think that makes me a super mom; I think that just makes me a mom.

My water broke like a water gun by Hannah

I had gone over my due date by eight days and was so done. Labored fifteen hours at home, two in the hospital and an hour of pushing with zero medical intervention. One push and my water broke and squirted across the room like a water gun and hit the midwife in the chest. “Wow! I haven’t seen a water break like that in years” the midwife exclaimed. Everyone hadn’t seen a baby with that much hair before. Grandma is a nurse on that floor and says he is still talked about to this day.

My placenta wouldn’t let me go by Kim

My Little Dude was diagnosed with a major heart defect during a regular ultrasound. I was assured that I could safely deliver naturally, but Little Dude would need surgery sometime after he was born. Well, Little Dude refused to come on time, so I was induced. Things went well, and Little Dude was born after 24 hours with less than two hours of pushing. The hard part turned out to be the placenta! It refused to detach! My Little Dude was taken for an echocardiogram while I was wheeled into a surgery room to remove the placenta. ☹

Last year, Dude Dad went viral with his hilarious video, “My Wife Be Like…” While he spoofed tons of his wife’s idiosyncrasies, one main topic was her love of Target.

Now, Tayler Camus is back with a new video all about the bullseye retailer, and he brought some friends! Joining Calmus is Penn Holderness, Charlie Berens and Miles of You Betcha and the result is the hilarious video below.

References to red tag sales, throw pillows and hours spent alone in the parking lot have us chuckling. While we’re all laughing outwardly at the funny yet true jokes in the video, we do have to admit we’d fully support if every Target held a Dads of Target meetup so we could shop in peace.

This Mom’s Viral “Squeaky Oven Dance” Is a Must-See

From relatable moments to hilarious parodies, our favorite viral parenting videos of 2019 were filled with lots of laughs and some “aww moments” along the way. As the year draws to a close, we’ve created a list of our favorites from the past twelve months. Scroll down and enjoy this recap of some of the year’s best viral parenting videos.

Gibberish Baby

In this viral video, comedian DJ Pryor and his son, Kingston, taught us that you do not need to use words to hold a conversation. The duo brought a smile to our faces as they chatted on their couch while watching television. Kinston, speaking only in gibberish, responded to all of his dad’s comments like he knew exactly what was happening on the screen.

He’s a Dad Guy

This dad’s parody of Billie Eilish’s hit, “Bad Guy” is not only spot on with his lyrics, but the video of his daily routine is hilarious. This ‘Dad Guy” is totally relatable.

Squeaky Oven

This dancing mom really knows how to embarrass her kids. Amy Stephens now-viral “squeaky oven dance” to Usher’s 2004 hit “Yeah” is a definite must-see.

But, Mooooooooom!

Story of This Life vlogger Esther Anderson perfectly captures the reality of life with multiple kids in her now viral video entitled “Sibling Fights.” If you have more than one kid or grew up with siblings, you can totally relate.

Jenga Mom

Joseph Hauck tweeted this clip, adding, “Make my mom go viral,” which is exactly what happened. Check out her totally awesome Jenga skills.

Husband and Wife Video Spoofs

Dad of two Taylor Calmus, documented his wife’s Target obsession and her love of coffee creamer in this hilarious video.

Not to be outdone, his wife filmed an equally hysterical response.

Holiday Mishap

Mary Katherine Backstrom was in line at her local Wawa when she decided to get into the holiday spirit and do something good for someone else. What happened next is hilarious.  Bonus – her laugh is infectious.

Holiday Clothes

If you have ever needed to dress your kids in not-so-comfy outfits for the holidays, Saturday Night Live’s commercial parody is totally relatable. Sit back and laugh while you think about “Wrestling your wiggly little monster into winter clothes” and “Merino sweaters that won’t fit over his head.”

Christmas Wife

Dude Dad, Taylor Calmus, posted another hilarious impersonation of his wife. This time, he pokes fun at her holiday prep. Wouldn’t you know, everything she needs can be found at Target!

Taylor Calmus, a.k.a. Dude Dad, is back at it again. The comedian dad’s newest video “My wife Every Christmas” is so right on “Target” you’ll laugh from the moment you watch it until Santa’s big day!

Calmus describes the video as, “Just a compilation of all the things my wife does and says every single Christmas as acted out by me, her husband,” and adds, “Love you babe!”—to his wife Heidi.

The clip starts out with Dude Dad, dressed as Heidi, waving buh-bye to her Thanksgiving guests and immediately heading towards a twinkle-light filled Christmas. After hanging a wreath, DudeDad/mom asks her hubby to fetch a seemingly endless stream of holiday decor picks from the attic. Of course, everything isn’t in the attic. Some, or maybe most of, what dude-mom needs is still at Target—and you totally understand.

If your holiday hectic level is currently set on high, and you need a well-deserved break, ask grandma to watch the kiddos, lock yourself in the bathroom and enjoy the three-plus minutes it takes to watch this cutely comedic clip!
