Eastside Sprayparks

Feriton Spur Park
Let the kids run barefoot through the sprayers as you watch (and maybe stay dry) on the sidelines or from the nearby pickleball court (hey, we can dream, right?) on a sunny summer day. Part of the park’s recent renovation, families will also find paved trails, an urban garden, the Kalakala Amphitheater, and the newest location for Chainline Brewing, where they’ll be serving up ice cream alongside frothy brews.

Sammamish Commons Park
Hidden away on the Plateau, the Sammamish Commons Park (by City Hall & the library) has a button-operated splash park in the Lower Commons Park. If you park in the Upper Park, expect a pretty long (10-15 min.) downhill hike to the playground and water area. It’s best to park in the newer lot below (from 228th head west on S.E. 4th to 222nd Ave. S.E.) and bring the stroller, so you don’t have to haul towels and gear such a long way. The Lower Park has a splash pad, playground, and porta-potties. Psst! If you hit this park on a Wednesday, don’t miss the farmers market going on from 4–8 p.m. at the upper part of the park.

And the fountains will surprise and even delight older kids who can try to dodge the sensor-activated sprayers. Psst…park on the 148th side if you want to be close to the splash pad.

Insider Tip: To get the water party started, push the top of the yellow pedestal and allow for a 15- to 30-second delay. Also, avoid going from 2:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m. when everything shuts off for daily maintenance. But hey, the kids need naps anyways, right?

Best Eastside Beaches

If you prefer to cool off while digging your toes into the sand, you’re in luck! The Eastside is chock-full of beautiful lakefront beaches. Many have lifeguards on duty (weather dependent) and playgrounds to boot, and many open the last week of June. So grab your shovels, buckets, and sunscreen and get your kids to some beachy goodness, stat!

Chism Beach Park
Of the many sweet neighborhood parks in Bellevue, Chism Beach Park is the largest on the waterfront and it has a great family beach in the lower section. There’s also a small, but workable playground and a nice sandy area along the lake for digging and castle making. The older kids will enjoy swimming out to the floating dock while the little ones splish-splash in the wading area.

Meydenbauer Bay Park
A secret garden-like park in the middle of Bellevue is Meydenbauer Bay Park. After almost two years of renovation, the seven-acre park boasts a quarter-mile of Lake Washington waterfront, a beautiful swimming beach and swimming platform, a 400-foot-long curved pedestrian pier that extends into the lake, a hand-carry boat launch, paved walkways, picnic areas, and a fantastic playground. The park also features a hilltop overlook with gorgeous views of Seattle, a new beach house with restrooms, changing rooms, and boat rentals (think: canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards), and a lifeguard station.

Clyde Beach Park
For a well-manicured beach right in the city, try Clyde Beach Park. The sloping lawn ends in a mini-amphitheater where you’ll find the pirate ship-themed playground; the beach is just below. And there are lots of great picnic spots here, especially on weekdays when you won’t have to share them with quite as many folks.

Newcastle Beach Park
South of the Mercer Slough, Newcastle Beach Park is the largest beach park in Bellevue. A tree-lined path welcomes you to the beach and a nice grass play area (bring your Frisbee!). There’s also a great playground for the tots and a huge dock that’s so big (300 feet long) you can almost convince yourself it’s a mini-boardwalk. The nice shallow water here gets warm (well, warm for Seattle), so fair warning that it might be even harder than usual to drag the kids out of the water.

Enatai Beach Park
Practically underneath I-90, this might seem like an odd location for waterfront fun, but this park has a few unique features you won’t want to miss. First off, there are picnic tables sitting above the boathouse, so you can have your lunch practically on top of the water! And if the kiddos are looking for some boating adventures, you can rent canoes and kayaks here from REI and paddle up the Mercer Slough.

Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park
On the very southern tip of Lake Washington, you’ll find the super sunny Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park. The little ones will love watching the boats coming and going from the busy boat launch, the planes taking off from Boeing’s Renton plant, and grabbing fish and chips from Ivar’s and a milkshake from Kid Valley. In addition to swimming, kids can play on the awesome new playground or walk along the paved trail. It’s a happening place in the summer, so come early for a parking spot.

Idylwood Beach Park
Although dwarfed by its enormous neighbor to the north (Marymoor Park), Idylwood Park is in fact quite idyllic. Located on the northeast end of Lake Sammamish, there’s a nice sandy beach, a nice playground with separate space for toddlers and older kids, and tons of shady picnic tables. Come early or look for the overflow parking lot on sunny days, as this place gets packed!

Luther Burbank Park
If you’re looking for a beach to bring Fido to, this park is it! There’s a great off-leash area (complete with a hose-off area for your pup post-swim). The playground received a major face-lift a few years ago, complete with a zip line, so be sure to check it out before or after your swim. And if you’re looking to spot some wildlife while you’re there, much of the park has been left undeveloped to foster a variety of animals including 135 species of birds, 50 species of waterfowl, raccoons, beavers, muskrats, tree frogs, and rabbits. Psst…many of these animals live in the wetlands that occupy the north and south ends of the park.

Houghton Beach Park
Eastside families love Houghton Beach. And there’s a good reason why. With great views of Seattle and the Olympics, and a fabulous playground directly next to the toddler-friendly beach (not to mention it’s located super conveniently downtown, right on Lake Washington Blvd.), this is a popular spot for folks looking for sun and surf on the Eastside. OK, there’s actually no real surf here. The launch is only for non-motorized boats, so it’s perfect for beginners who want to rent their first kayak.

Juanita Beach Park
Juanita Beach Park in Kirkland boasts walking paths, landscaping, public art, and one of the coolest playgrounds around. And that’s just the beginning of this award-winning oasis. The swimming area is enclosed, so it’s great for waders and for folks who want a “pool” experience at the beach. And there’s a weekly Farmer’s Market here on Friday in the summer. If you haven’t been in a while, this spot is definitely worth a second glance.

Waverly Beach Park
A small park (especially when compared to its big neighbor Juanita Beach), Waverly Beach Park is big on charm. With a fully enclosed swimming area (think U-shaped dock), this is a perfect spot for the kiddos to try out their new back float. There’s also some nice shady spots near the water and this beach has a bit quieter pace than some of the bigger beaches nearby.

St. Edward State Park
Once a Catholic seminary, this is a park with some history. Go and check out the architecture and grounds, or go on a nice hike before you make your way down to the water for a little dip. The ginormous playground here is not to be missed; there are turrets and towers galore that your princes and princesses will surely love. And did we mention that the recently restored Lodge at St. Edward State Park makes for a great babymoon or parents-only weekend getaway? You’re welcome. Hint: Don’t forget your Discover Pass.

From cultural norms and parent preference to the question of consent, there are a lot of factors that go into deciding the right time to pierce a child’s ears. We asked pediatricians and other experts for their perspectives on the ideal age (and potential pros and cons of infant ear piercing), as well as the best places to take kids to get their ears pierced, and what parents should know and consider ahead of time.

What Experts Say About Infant Ear Piercing

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends postponing piercing “until your child is mature enough to care for the site herself.” However, they also say that if a piercing is performed carefully and cared for conscientiously, there is little risk, no matter the child’s age.

Nivedita More, MD, a pediatrician at Bayside Medical Group at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, echoes this advice. While she recommends waiting until kids are older, she says that “if the parents desire to get their child’s ears pierced when they are younger, I recommend they get it 1-2 weeks after the second set of their primary vaccines, after four months of age, so they are protected against tetanus.”

As a general rule, hospitals in North America aren’t equipped to pierce the ears of newborns. “It is best for parents to check with their pediatrician regarding when and where this procedure can be performed safely by a pediatrician or a nurse or a trained technician under sterile precautions if desired,” More says.

You can also visit the Association of Professional Piercers’ (APP) website to find a reputable piercer in your area.

Should You Wait for Consent?

one question about ear piercing for kids is usually "what is the right age?"
iStock

When it comes to the question of ear piercing for kids, some parents want to hold off modifying their child’s body until they’re old enough to decide for themselves. And if you feel this way, then waiting is the right choice. That being said, many parents do make non-medical choices without their child’s consent. Haircuts come to mind. Hair grows back. And skin does, too, if a child later refuses to wear earrings. No peer-reviewed studies link baby ear piercing with long-term mental or emotional trauma. But there are physical pitfalls to avoid when piercing your kiddo’s ears.

Always check with your pediatrician if your little has a chronic health condition. And remember that those tiny lobes will need weeks of aftercare. If you can’t commit to an additional cleaning routine, consider waiting until your kid can handle the chore themselves.

Be aware that the younger the child, the harder it might be to find someone to pierce their ears. “ Many piercers prefer to wait until the child is old enough to request the piercing,” says Jef Saunders, past President of the Association of Professional Piercers and co-owner of Gamma Piercing. “I have several piercers who work for me, and none of them feel comfortable working with babies at this time. It is a personal decision for everyone involved, parent and piercer, so it may take some time to find the right fit.”

What to Look for When Taking Kids to Get Their Ears Pierced

ear piercing age is older for this little girl
iStock

As a general rule, find a business that makes the majority of its money piercing instead of selling jewelry. The expertise of the workers will reflect that focus.

Run, do not walk, away from any place that says “extensive experience” and refuses to give you a specific number. “Most quality shops will be happy to explain their training and continuing education, as well as their health and safety practices,” says Saunders. “If the store has a website, look for a commitment to jewelry quality, service, and safety over cheap price claims.” Do they use needles or an ear-piercing gun to pierce ears? The APP does not recommend using ear-piercing guns as “most…can’t be sterilized, and anyone being pierced by them is at risk. A reputable professional won’t use a gun for piercing–even for ear lobes.”

Saunders recommends looking “for a clean, well-lit facility. Attitude tells you a lot about a piercing shop. Look for folks interested in helping you, and seem enthusiastic about performing the piercing you are requesting. Trust your instincts! If you get a bad feeling about a situation or a facility, it is best to go home and sleep on it rather than push forward.”

The studio should also offer jewelry that is appropriate for new piercings. Ask for Titanium, Niobium, or 14k Gold that is nickel- and cadmium-free and alloyed for biocompatibility. Gold-plated or gold-overlay earrings aren’t acceptable. The metal below the coating can leach into baby’s skin, potentially causing contact allergies.

Platinum is also safe for little ears but is expensive. The first set of earrings will have longer-than-average posts to accommodate the initial swelling from the procedure. If you want to gift your child with heirloom-quality jewelry, consider saving your dollars for the second set of earrings. They're more likely to wear them after their ears heal up.

What to Know Before Getting Kids' Ears Pierced

“You can spare yourself an extra visit to the piercing studio by reading their ID and age requirements thoroughly before visiting,” advises Saunders. “Many states will require professional piercers to have photo ID for the parent, as well as birth certificates for the child being pierced. Some states even require a notarized copy of the paperwork! Reviewing paperwork requests, aftercare, and giving a little extra time to choose jewelry can really help the piercing experience go smoothly!”

Getting your baby’s ears pierced is a family decision. Take time to discuss the right timing for your cultural context. And do your homework before you go. You’ll set your child up for a smooth, safe experience at any age.

The Cultural Context Behind Infant Ear Piercing

little girl with her ears pierced
Michael Mims via Unsplash

For many families, piercing baby ears at one month or as a pre-teen boils down to culture. If your mother pierced your ears as a baby, and her mother pierced her ears as a baby, then piercing your baby’s ears is more than vanity—it links them to family history. It’s a rite of passage for both the child and the parent. For Hindus in India, it’s also an important part of religious tradition. The Karna Vedha Zanskar requires piercing a baby’s ears (of both genders) in either the first or third year of life.

Even for the non-religious, piercing your small fry’s ears early is viewed as a service. According to statista.com, over 80% of women have pierced ears. If you assume that your child will follow the trend, then getting an infant's ears pierced at three months, for example, means they won’t remember the pain of the procedure.

The best course of action is to decide on the right timing as a family. Your child’s other parent might have a strong opinion different from yours. Or you may discover that you aren’t as attached to this particular tradition as you thought. “In Chile, many baby girls are pierced after a couple of days of being born,” says Claudia Diaz, mother of one. “At that moment [of my daughter’s birth], I didn't put so much thought into it, and I followed the tradition. When I came to Canada, I felt I should not have done it because it was unnecessary. Now [that my daughter is a teen], I don't regret it because she has several piercings in her ears and one in her nose.”

Buying earrings is easy, but knowing where to get your child’s ears pierced can be downright intimidating. We’ve rounded up the best children’s ear piercing places—from pediatric ear piercing doctors to kid-friendly tattoo parlors—to help you make an informed decision. If you’ve worked up the nerve to face the ear gun, read on for the best places to go in the DMV.

American Girl recently announced the addition of new in-store experiences at its New York City and Chicago flagship locations. So what can you expect from American Girl’s new spaces? To start with, the doll hospitals will offer everything from wellness exams to specialist repair appointments. Kiddos can also get a complimentary Certificate of Good Health after their dolls’ check-ups.

NYC store visitors can also visit a fan fave (and the 1970s) in Julie’s Groovy World. The interactive space, which is based on the doll Julie Albright, features a ’70s-style living area, play Pop-A-Shot basketball and take selfies with a classic VW Beetle.

Chicago American Girl doll owners and enthusiasts can visit the store’s newly renovated salon. Available services include hairstyling, ear piercing and manicures—for girls and dolls! These services are already available in the existing NYC salon location.

Jamie Cygielman, General Manager of American Girl, said in a press release, “For more than twenty years, since we opened our first American Girl flagship store, we’ve been creating engaging, interactive retail experiences for kids and their families.” Cygielman added, “These experiences are a key part of what connects American Girl doll owners with the brand, and the new doll hospitals, salon and Julie’s Groovy World take that to the next level.”

Getting your kids excited about a hair cut is almost as tough as getting them excited about a trip to the dentist. But thanks to the newly opened Snip-its Kids Salon at Crossroads Bellevue, stylists are not only trained in the latest kids’ hair trends, but also how to work with young, nervous clientele—making each visit to the salon a fun and memorable one. If your crew is in need of cut, trim or style, read on for the inside scoop on this kid-centric salon that is making kids feel special and pampered with every visit.

photo: Snip-its Kids Salon

The Important Details
Snip-its is conveniently located near the center of Bellevue Crossroads Shopping Center (near the food court and stage area) and offers a bright, exciting space for kids to get their hair cut, trimmed or styled. Focused on creating “magical experiences for kids and parents,” Snip-its employs specially trained stylists who love kids and it shows. Stylists are also certified by Autism Speaks to help make the whole hair-cutting experience a positive one for all.

About the Owner
Owner Duc Quan wants to make sure this often seen “task” of getting a hair cut is turned into something fun for kids along with an educational experience. That’s why he provides information to kids and parents about correct kids hygiene and age appropriate products. With a 4 1/2-year-old daughter himself, Quan knows a thing or two about kids. And his passion for good products for kids is seen on his shelves. The salon offers Snip-its brand shampoos, conditioners and styling products, plus a 100% vegan brand, Original Sprout and perennial mom-favorite, Moroccanoil.

Walk-ins Encouraged
Unlike many other kids’ hair salons, Snip-its is primarily walk-in only—great for when you don’t want to plan weeks in advance (who can?) or when your little monkey is suddenly drowning in hair. And while walk-in service can sometimes be tricky, Snip-its offers up to four stylists at any given time, activities in the waiting area and the food court and mall right next door, so wait times (generally no more than 5 minutes) go by in a blink. Psst! Bellevue Crossroads is full of ride-on mechanical toys to entertain tykes (think two-minute rides on an elephant or train for $.25), as well as kid faves like WiggleWorks kids, an awesome candy store and Creatively Yours, a ceramic studio that offers paint-it-yourself ceramics.

Perks That Come with Each Service
At the beginning of each appointment, haircut recipients receive a key-card-like pass to hold during their service. After their appointment (which can include a haircut, a shampoo & cut, added styling or just a simple bang trim), kids drop their passes into a special slot on a Magic Box to earn a cool prize. Computer tablets are also available during haircuts for pint-sized entertainment and fun accouterments are available as well (think sparkles, washable hair color or hair tinsel which is like a weave that stays in for a considerably long time). Higher-end hair accessories and toys are also available for sale.

Low-Sensory Appointments
If your little monkey needs a bit more of a relaxed or quiet environment or if he or she is feeling tentative about the hair-cutting process, Snip-its is more than accommodating. They offer specifically scheduled appointments at quiet times during the day and when the sounds and lights can be dimmed for your appointment.

More Than Hair
If your mini fashionista is into more than just amazing hair cuts, Snip-its also offers mini manis and pedis, ear-piercing, facials and even parties! Choose Glamour, Hollywood, Spa or Rock Star and let your little one get duded up with his or her pals in the nearby Community Room. After the glam treatment, partygoers get to walk the red carpet, catwalk or prance on stage in all their fabulousness.

Mark Your Calendars for the Grand Opening Party!
Everyone is invited to come and check out the salon at the official Grand Opening Party on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. Eric Haines (a Cirque du Soleil entertainer!) will be on-hand to wow the crowds with a variety of amazing feats (think stilts, unicycle and other silly fun). Plus, face painting will be offered, along with music, a free spin of the prize wheel (you could win a 6-pack of hair cuts!) and more.

Good to Know
This is the first franchise location of Snip-its in the Pacific NW, but Quan has his sights set on opening four more locations in areas such as Bothell, Bellevue, Issaquah, Lynnwood and Greenwood. Keep an eye on their website for more Snip-its fun for everyone!

Whether your daughter is two months or ten years old, getting her ears pierced can be a big moment, so it’s important to make sure you’re tykes tiny ears are in the right hands. We polled a whole host of LA moms, and the consensus seems to be that the pediatrician’s office is the best place to get it done. However, some doctors don’t offer this service, and some kids want this rite of passage to feel like a special occasion. So we’ve rounded up the best non-doc spots to meet this fashionable milestone.

Sharon Wollaston Ear Piercing
All the doc, none of the office!  If your own pediatrician doesn’t offer piercing (or you want this experience to  feel more special than an annual physical) but you still want to use a doctor, try Dr. Sharon Wollaston, a board-certified pediatrician who has 15 years of experience with piercing ears for children specifically. She is a certified Blomdahl Piercer, which means she uses a medical grade piercing gun and earrings. Dr. Wollaston offer’s a calm, relaxed environment in her home office, with a playroom to keep kids entertained.

Details: Piercings are done on weekends by appointment only. The fee is $140, which includes earrings.

Body Electric Tattoo and Piercing
Besides the pediatrician’s office, tattoo parlors are a close runner-up as best place to get your kid’s ears pierced in LA. While it may not seem like a place to bring kids, they take their sterilizing seriously! This spot has been around long enough that you may have even gotten your own piercing or tattoo here back in the pre-child era. This place blows every mall stand piercing shop out of the water in coolness factor alone, but it’s also impeccably professional, especially when it comes to handling kids. You won’t find any piercing guns here, only sterile, hollow-pointed needles and a great selection of top-grade jewelry. The piercers, including the owner himself, will really take their time to get the placement right and make sure kids are comfortable. The decor and clientele is definitely eclectic, however, so be prepared to answer some questions if your kids haven’t been exposed to the tattoo world.

Details: The starting price for babies is $180, which includes standard titanium studs and aftercare products. For kids, the cost is the same as adults, $130 .The shop is open daily from noon to 9:30pm. You can walk-in, but we recommend calling in advance to set an appointment. Weekdays are best since weekends can get pretty packed. Make sure to bring cash if you plan to tip, as they won’t add it on to a card charge. Parking can be a tough, like most every place on Melrose.

Envy Body Piercing
If you want to bypass the tattoo-side of things, then a professional piercing shop is another great choice. The piercers at Envy are all friendly, professional, and CPR certified. They have a huge selection of earrings and all the materials are medical implant grade. They will talk you and your little one through the whole process, giving you plenty of safety information.  We love that they suggest a follow-up visit to make sure that everything is healing properly.

Details: The shop is open daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and no appointment is necessary, but if you want a specific piercer (we suggest Yesi or Stephanie, who are great with kids) or don’t want a long wait it’s helpful to call in advance. You will need to bring identification in the form of a birth certificate. The fee varies based on the earrings you select, but the piercing service itself is $25 plus the cost of jewelry.

Ancient Adornments Body Piercing
As his nickname suggests, Roger “Rabbit” Rodriguez, the owner and head piercer at Ancient Adornments is full of character and spunk that sets all his clients, especially young kids, at ease. The space is immaculate and clean, you’ll feel more like you’re walking into a super-hip doctors office than a piercing studio. No piercing guns here, they pierce with needles only and take their time to talk you through the process, measure and make sure the piercings are well-balanced. They have an awesome selection of tiny studs so your mini fashionista doesn’t have to be stuck with plain ones for the three-month healing period.

Details: Both locations are open Sunday-Thursday from 1 p.m.-9:30 p.m., Friday & Saturday from 1 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and present a birth certificate in order to be pierced. They accept walk-ins or appointments. The cost of piercing is $32 plus the cost of earrings, which start at $50 for studs.

Rothstein Jewelers Beverly Hills

Janet has pierced hundreds of children’s (and adults, including a few celebrities) ears over the last 20 years and you can tell in how well she handles nervous tots and makes the whole process painless (literally and figuratively). She uses a piercing gun and medical grade surgical steel studs covered in 24 karat gold. If your piercing novice is feeling anxious, check out the awesome video of a girl happily getting her ears pierced on the Rothstein website to give an idea of what to expect.

Chances are you have tots at home who often express an ear-piercing, abiding love of mac ‘n’ cheese. Well mom and dad, gourmet chef, Kelly Chapman, is about to become your new BFF. A rock star on the the LA food scene for some time, Chapman, is well known for serving up old-fashioned mac ‘n’ cheese with a twist through her popular food truck, Mac-O-Licious. What started as a mobile macaroni mecca has now evolved into a whimsical flagship cafe in Valley Village.

Mac Daddy Dishes
Using her family’s mouthwatering recipes that have been handed down through the generations, Chapman delivers Southern Style mac ‘n’ cheese dishes that ooze vibrant flavor and creativity. The Just Baking Bacon Mac is a homerun with pint-sized bacon lovers – a heavenly baked casserole of noodles, hickory smoked bacon and cheddar cheese. Parents looking for healthier options will adore the Garden Mac – a hearty macaroni and cheese dish with an array of colorful veggies. Customers also have the option to boost the flavor of any mac dish by choosing from an array of fun toppings like hot dogs, cornbread and roasted garlic. Two kids’ specific meals are available as well  – the Mini Mac Pop or Creamy Mac both served with Veggie Bites and a dessert.

Between a playful color pallet of yellow and black, checkered tablecloths, mac ‘n’ cheese pillows and lamps, as well as benches covered in artificial grass, your family will feel more like they’re attending a fantastically festive picnic than dining at a restaurant. Kids are offered paper and crayons to color while they’re waiting for their food, and Mac-O-Licious kids’ menus will soon be available for little artists to doodle to their heart’s content. Service is super friendly and attentive, just as you’d expect from any gracious Southern host.
