Once your kiddo becomes confident on this hill, you can introduce them to Creekside’s quad chairs and hit Southern Comfort, a hill that mirrors Paula’s Way in steepness but offers a much longer run.
One of the biggest expenses at any mountain is ski lessons. Costing almost as much as a lift ticket, it’s a spendy investment we think is worth it. Help you or your child get comfortable on the mountain fast by building confidence-boosting skills quickly. You’ll find teachers—all of whom are registered members of PSIA or Professional Ski Instructors of America—that work with any range of abilities and are also experienced in adaptive instruction for those who might do better with a different learning style.

This quick service option offers a fresh fixings bar with large slices of tomato, fresh lettuce, and other sandwich toppers.

Skiing isn’t the only way to enjoy Massanutten’s mountain. If you’ve got a beginner on skis, chances are they’ll spy the saucer-like tubes flying down the mountain just a short distance from Paula’s Way (you can’t miss the screams!). Praised as the best snow tubing by The Washingtonian, these 90-minute snow tube sessions whisk tubers down one of 16 lanes for fast thrills (and a few high-pitched shrieks). You must be 36′ tall to participate and tubes are single-rider only, but you can attach up to four tubes to pick up some extra speed.

The indoors are always heated to a toasty 84° so your littles can climb and explore without ever feeling cold. Make it a full day of adventure by heading to Adventure Park USA’s Hang ‘Em High Ropes Course. Hang out 13 feet above the ground to navigate this fun and challenging mid-air adventure perfect for anyone at least 40-inches tall. Summit Ropes

Unfortunately, Cooperstown's popular Farmer's Museum, one of the oldest rural life museums in the country, is closed until April, as is the area art museum, the Fenimore Art Museum.
Part of Coopertown's charm is its picturesque Main Street, which you'll definitely want to stroll down, and where you'll find shops specializing in baseball souvenirs and collectibles.
Where to stay: The Otesaga is the stately luxury hotel if you're looking for a grand experience, and several bed and breakfasts are located right in the center of town (the Inn at Cooperstown and the Landmark Inn are popular.) If you need something a bit more kid-friendly, you can find chain hotels like Holiday Inn Express just outside of town.)
What to do: Step back in time at the Mystic Seaport Museum, which covers 19 acres along the Connecticut shore. This leading maritime museum features play areas just for kids, historical reenactors that bring history to life, and four National Historic Landmark vessels, including the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America’s oldest commercial ship still in existence!
You can also explore what's under the water in Mystic at the Mystic Aquarium. The celebrated aquarium offers exhibits both indoors and out and is home to penguins, seals, sharks, beluga whales, rays, and many more sea-dwellers. For an extra special visit, book an animal encounter.
Where to stay: Located in the heart of town on the water, The Whaler's Inn is a classic choice. In Stockbridge, its sister property, the Red Lion Inn (est. 1773) can offer you a bed in the historic main inn. Lucky for us, Woodrow Wilson Aquatic Center in Tenleytown offers an Olympic size indoor lap pool and kiddie pool that is open year round, seven days a week. Kids love the two basketball hoops and large buckets that dump water into the baby pool. The Aquatic Center is free to D.C. residents, but charges non-residents $7 for adults and $4 for kids. The nation’s capitol has countless museums, but a favorite for the kiddos is the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. Head straight to the imagiNATIONS Activity Center on the third level for an interactive space where kids can weave a giant basket, explore snowshoes, sit inside a full-sized tipi, play in an Amazonian stilt house and learn about pueblo adobe houses. Upon entering, kids pick up a “passport book,” and get stamps from different tribal nations at each station. There’s a reading room and a craft room, with super cool rotating art projects (think: a Lakota Star Quilt). When the gang gets hungry, head down to the Mitsitum Café, which the New York Times has called “the best food on the mall.” There, you’ll find fry bread, wild duck, salmon, and buffalo burgers.

78.1 miles from downtown Portland Portland is a long way away from the beaches of California, but you can get a little taste of the boardwalk experience in Seaside! Your clan will enjoy playing and relaxing on the massive expanse of sandy beaches that run along the ocean. In addition to amazing beaches, Seaside is home to The Funland Entertainment Center (201 Broadway St.), which is the largest arcade on the North Oregon Coast and has been around since 1931. There your little gamers will entertain themselves for hours with skee-ball, bumper cars, mini golf and so much more. Then head to the Seaside Carousel Mall where you and your kids will find a beautiful replica of a classic carousel that can take the whole tribe for a musical ride ( (300 Broadway St.).While you’re at it, make sure you hit Schweitert’s Cone & Candy (406 Broadway St.) for saltwater taffy and chocolate-dipped treats, including bacon-topped Twinkies. Then, head west 1 block, north 3 blocks and 1 block west again to go feed the seals and let the little ones touch a starfish at Seaside Aquarium (200 N. Promenade).
Located between Astoria and Seaside on the Oregon coast, Fort Stevens offers your family a unique adventure. In between hours of the best beach combing around on beautiful beaches your crew will find excitement and wonder exploring a historic shipwreck and a military fort.
Once you’ve gotten a good history lesson in, grab your bikes and take them for a spin on the nine miles of paved bicycle paths or don your hiking boots and hit the six miles of trails that take you through a wide variety of habitats including spruce forests, wetlands and dunes. While the water is probably still a bit cold, nearby Coffenbury Lake has two swimming areas, a picnic area, restrooms and boat ramp if you want to spend a day on the water.
If you are up for pitching your tent, Fort Stevens has a campground with six tent sited or try glamping in one of the 15 yurts that are offered. If camping isn’t your style, there are also 11 deluxe cabins to spend the night in. Five of the 11 are pet friendly, so your furry family members can join you!
Beaches may be fun, but the High Desert holds its own when it come to family fun and the best outdoor activities? If your family loves the fresh air then you just can’t go wrong with a weekend in Sun River. Visit Sunriver Resort to reserve a room at the Sunriver Lodge Village, a Sun River Lodge or one of their vacation homes or condos. You’ll want to bring your bikes — there are over 35 miles of paved paths that will keep little legs busy all day long. If water play is more appealing to your crew, you can rent canoes or kayaks, ride ponies, play at the park playground, and hike to Benham Falls. The top attraction is the resort’s Cove Aquatic Center. The Cove Aquatic Center offers visitors year-round swimming. The center features an indoor and outdoor pool, jetted spas, private outdoor cabanas, an indoor and outdoor waterslide, a gently flowing eddy, a nature walk and discovery area, lakeside trails, and a special lawn where you can soak up the sun.
If a beautiful mountain escape is like what your are looking for, Mt. Rainier is the perfect destination. With a National park that boasts over 130 trails for your and your family to enjoy, there is more to explore than your family can possibly fit in in a weekend. Having a hard time choosing what to do? Go on a wildflower hike or make your way to majestic waterfalls for and afternoon of awe.
To add some adventure to your trip, get up close and persona with the wild life at NW Trek. They offer Keeper tours that bring you eye to eye with the local animal residents.
Rainier is well worth a weekend trip. Consider renting a rustic cabin for your getaway. Three Bears Lodge offers eight cabins just outside the year-round Paradise entrance to the national park in Ashford. The cabins accommodate groups of all sizes. Some of the cabins even come with highchairs, boosters, toys, cribs and anything else you could imagine you might need. All of the cabins have fully equipped kitchens that have the supplies for a complimentary waffle breakfast. If you choose this lodging option, the only thing you need to bring with you is food.
Bend

Families flock to Bend from all over the country for its unmatched outdoor recreation and adventures. You’ll have to wait until late Spring May 1st) but prepare to get wet and wild on the Deschutes River with Sun Country Tours—their guides can take you on a white water rafting excursion or a relaxing tour down the river by stand up paddle board or inner tube. Just a little further south on 97, you’ll find the world-renowned Smith Rock; climbers come to the area for an opportunity to scale the sheer walls of Monkey Face. Your little monkeys may not be ready to climb like a pro, but book a day with the guides at Chockstone Climbing Guides and they will be well on their way. All of the required gear is provided and you will feel safe in the hands of these climbing experts.
Mt.Bachelor Village gives traveling families a variety of lodging options. Rent a hotel room, a river view condo or a vacation home. There is something available to fit every family budget and all options come with amenities like indoor and outdoor pools, playgrounds, golf courses and access to biking and hiking paths.
When in Bend, do like the locals and hit the breweries. Stop by the iconic Deschutes Brewery for some true Central Oregon flair. You will enjoy a selection of award-winning craft beer and hand-crafted ales. And if you are craving a good burger, they won’t disappoint. 10 Barrel is another local brewery that offers up fantastic brews along with outdoor fire pits and plenty of room for kids to be kids.
Astoria
What would Memorial Day Weekend be without a little Ocean air? This historic town sits where the forest meets the sea, and your family meets a good time! Started by Scandinavians, fur traders, Lewis and Clark, and named for John Jacob Astor, the city boasts a mix of all those influences perfectly. Admire the lovely Victorian houses on the hilltops, stop by Finn Ware for some Scandinavian-inspired goods (like salty licorice!), or check out Lewis and Clark’s 1805 winter camp at Fort Clatsop.
In town, don’t miss a walk along the pier and a stop at Frite and Scoop ice cream available for curbside pickup. Then head to theColumbia River Maritime Museum, especially if you’re little ones are fans of boats. This small museum does a really great job at offering interesting and dynamic exhibits, and you can even step aboard a real floating lighthouse ship! You’ll look at the river outside differently once you learn how dangerous it actually is to the ships sailing it.
Stay at the Cannery Pier Hotel, built on the site of an old cannery, 600 feet over the water. You’ll get views of the real working boats that ply the waters, and you can rent bikes to explore even more.
Across the river in Washington, take a day to explore Cape Disappointment, which is much better than it sounds (someone had a bad day there!). Clamber over rocks to scan the waters for whales, who tend to migrate in March. The numerous hiking options include a great lighthouse, and you can warm up inside the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, which marks the end of the group’s epic journey to the Pacific.

Gulf Shores, Ala. Sure, Alabama’s Gulf Shores are a classic summer destination. But they’re just as good — if not better — in the fall, when you can enjoy outdoor adventures in slightly cooler weather. Options include bike rides or Segway tours on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail; shopping and a Ferris wheel ride at The Wharf; and even helicopter tours! Lulu’s — one part play land, another part restaurant — is not to be missed either. (It’s owned by Jimmy Buffett’s sister, Lucy!)
South Padre Island, Texas You just have to experience Sand Castle Days in South Padre Island. The free, four-day event, which takes place every October, features stunning sand sculptures — so stunning that you’ll wonder if they’re real! We assure you they are; in fact, you can watch artists from all over the world create their masterpieces before your eyes.
Other family highlights on South Padre Island include Sea Turtle Inc., a rehabilitation center for injured or sick turtles; zip-lining and horseback riding at South Padre Island Adventure Park; and Schlitterbahn Water Park, open year-round.
Nantucket, Mass. Head to Nantucket for the fall foliage; stay for the Cranberry Festival, which takes place each October. The event, of course, include delicious cranberry treats to sample, plus hayrides, sack races, face painting and a petting zoo. Other fall favorites on Nantucket include bike rides and family photos at Brant Point Lighthouse, located next to Children’s Beach.
Rehoboth Beach, Del. Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, is a classic beach town that’s just as good in the fall as it is in the summer! Head straight for Funland, a family-owned amusement park with affordable games, rides and food on the boardwalk. The park is open through mid-September. Another reason to visit in the fall? The annual Sea Witch Festival. The three-day event, which takes place in late- October, features parades, pumpkin carving, free outdoor movies and more. Sign us up!
Lincoln City, Ore. Did you know that Lincoln City, Oregon, is the Kite Capital of the World? The city hosts two kite festivals annually, including one in the fall. The Fall Kite Festival includes kite-making workshops for kids and photo ops galore — all free of charge. Aside from the festival, Lincoln City is great for hikes and bike rides in the fall, with several local parks on offer.
Myrtle Beach, S.C. Summer continues into fall in Myrtle Beach — so much so that that city offers an Endless Summer Festival with free entertainment, carnival rides, a children’s play area and more! NYC summer is in full effect for 2021, and that of course means the city is ready to celebrate the Fourth of July in style. The Macy’s Fireworks are back, Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest returns with a live audience, but that’s just the beginning of Fourth of July family fun for 2021.
Yes, the Macy's Fireworks are back for 2021. The theme of the 45th annual pyrotechnic display is "United We Celebrate", honoring everyday heroes in communities across the country. Macy's promises a boffo 25-minute show, set off from barges in the East River, with new firework effects like rainbows, red and blue jellyfish and more. And yes, if you want to see them in person, you can.
Viewing spots will be divided into "vaccinated" and "non-vaccinated" areas (which, admittedly is complicated if you have a child who is not yet eligible for the vaccine). For the vaccinated, there will be public viewing stands along the elevated portion of FDR Drive, with entrances at East 23rd, East 34th and East 42nd Streets. (Special needs and ADA entrance is at 34th Street.) Unvaccinated members of the public can view from spots along the Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan waterfronts—check Macy's website for updates on locations.
The fireworks will be accompanied by The United States Army Field Band & Soldiers' Chorus, a rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by Broadway Inspirational Voices, "You'll Never Walk Alone" by Tori Kelly. The broadcast will include live music performances from acts like the Black Pumas, OneRepublic, Coldplay, Reba McEntire, and others.

Last year's competitive eating event was closed to the public, but you can catch this contest for the "Mustard Belt" in person if you really want to. (Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis with doors opening at 10 a.m. and the event starting at 10:45 a.m.) Reigning male champion Joey Chestnut returns (he broke a record in 2020, consuming 75 dogs and buns) but female champ Miki Sudo is sitting this one out because she's pregnant. (Seems wise.) The event is held at Maimonides Park (home of the Brooklyn Cyclones), not far from Nathan's Famous flagship at Surf and Stillwell Avenues. You can catch the action live on ESPN3 at 10:45 (women's) and ESPN at noon (men's).
The Jones Beach fireworks are back! WALK 97.5 FM and KJOY-98.3 FM will simulcast music during the fireworks presentation, which kicks off at 9:30 p.m.

Meet the Presidents and the Oval Office looks at how the role of the president has evolved since George Washington. Visitors walk in the footsteps of presidents and into a recreation of the Oval Office—complete with audio excerpts of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon and a Resolute Desk replica. Complementing the Oval Office, the Meet the Presidents Gallery features historical footage, artworks, and unique artifacts like the George Washington inaugural bible that further illustrate the powers and responsibilities of the executive branch.

And, from July 1 - 6, for just six days, a miniature, nine-foot bronze model of the Statue of Liberty, created from the original 1878 plaster mold, will be on display on Ellis Island.
The Statue of Liberty Museum (which opened in 2019 and is located on Liberty Island), is full of interactive elements and artifacts spread out over 26,000 square feet. Take a virtual "flight" through the interior of the statue, "visit" the warehouse where Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi built the Statue of Liberty, and see the original torch of the statue up close!

A tradition on Staten Island since 1911, this parade is one of the country's oldest Independence Day celebrations. This 4th of July tradition started in 1911 in the town of Travis and continues to march on, from P.S. 26 and the Showplace Entertainment Center (141 East Service Rd.). Grand Marshall this year is Joan Guerra. Historically, the parade has included a little bit of everything including clowns, bands, classic cars and firetrucks. Masks and social distancing is requested. Kickoff ceremony is at Noon, the parade begins at 12:30.
