It’s time to ask yourself the dreaded question “What will I do with my kids this summer?” Luckily, with a little research, we’ve found tons of cool summer programs for kids that keep costs very low or even free. From the Ranger Rick photo contest to Camp Creatology, these affordable summer programs for kids are some of the best ways to stay busy when they’re not in school.

The Planet Possible Family Challenge is a great way to make sure there's minimal summer brain drain. This series of projects and crafts from National Geographic hopes to inspire families to get outside, explore the habitats that surround us, and empower kids to understand why it's so important to protect them. Each challenge has three steps:
MAKE IT! A step-by-step DIY for a tool or craft that will help kids explore the microhabitat
TRY IT! Prompts or activities to encourage kids to explore and learn about biodiversity, using the Make It! craft
SAVE IT! Kid-friendly tips on protecting the microhabitat

If you need an incentive to get the kids to go screen-free every once in a while, check out the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program. Print out the Summer Reading Journal and have your kids write down which books they've read and why they liked them. Once they’ve read eight books, bring the completed journal to your local Barnes & Noble between July 1 and August 31 to get a free book.
A new national summer program for kids in 2024, Camp Invention is for kids grades K-6. It's a week-long STEM camp where kids will build thinking skills with hands-on challenges and open-ended adventures, enjoy mind-teasing games, and meet new friends.
There are over 1,000 locations nationwide and there's even an at-home camp experience that can be mailed to your doorstep.
Outschool offers dozens of classes and courses for ages ranging from toddler to tween. Do they want to learn another language? There's a class for that. How about beginning hip-hop or even wilderness skills? You can find that too.
Get your whole crew involved with Family Maker Camp—it’s a great way to flex your imagination and create something new. Join in on one of their live streams or pick something that sounds interesting out of their project library. Before you know it, you’ll have built a hovercraft or a musical instrument.
If you’re worried about getting your middle or high school kids up to speed in the new school year, Numerade has a fabulous (and free) solution. They’re offering free STEM summer camps covering SAT test prep, pre-calculus, physics, and more.
Research shows that kids connect when they're participating in an activity with you whether it's cooking, playing outside or being creative. The non-profit organization Marathon Kids, which works to ignite the joy of physical activity in kids, is launching a free summer program in hopes of making this easier for parents. Simply walk a mile and talk while doing it. Each day you'll receive a new prompt, there's a special mileage tracker, and by the end, you'll have walked the length of a marathon (26 miles) while getting to know your child better.
Microsoft normally offers free kids' camps at their stores during the summer, but they've moved online for now. Kids can sign up for free online workshops to tour the Smithsonian, plan a virtual road trip, put their Minecraft skills to the test, and more. Ages range from 6 to 14, and while the camps are free, advance registration is required.
Give your kids an exciting and engaging adventure this summer with one of Brain Chase's 2024 treasure hunt programs. How does it work? Kids will race against other teams in a week-long competition of escape room puzzles and adventures. Each interactive escape room is filled with hidden clues, and there are physical challenges as well. The fun starts on June 3.
From May 9 - Sept. 12, 2024, as kids track their reading streaks, they’ll unlock fun videos, book excerpts, and other exclusive summer content when you download Scholastic's free Home Base app. Kids can play games, meet their favorite book characters, write fiction, and upload art, You can register here, and check out the info for parents here.
If you’ve got a budding Ansel Adams at home, the Ranger Rick photo contest is a great way to keep them busy over the summer. First, head for the great outdoors (or your backyard) and have them take nature photos. Then, select their favorite and send it in with proper sizing (2 MB or smaller, JPG format, at least 600 pixels wide or 600 pixels tall). If your kid doesn’t have a digital camera, no worries! Phone images are also accepted.
Recent winners (this is an ongoing contest) are entered into the running for Ranger Rick’s "Your Best Shots" Magazine Award and are selected three times a year. Each winner receives a certificate of achievement and copies of the magazine featuring the winning image!
It's never too early to instill the habit of giving to others. Have your little philanthropists sign up with Kids That Do Good this summer to spend time giving back to their local community. The online (kid-founded!) resource allows kids to get involved with a cause or charity of their choosing—or, if you’ve got real go-getters at home—create their own! Once you’ve created an account and found an organization, kids can track their service hours via social profiles and certificates.
Designed to help spark the imaginations of kiddos ages 8-12, this three-day workshop allows kids to explore and expand on their digital creativity. They’ll choose one of three tracks and spend 90 minutes of each day working on their project. Be sure to sign up here to get an email announcing open registration for the summer program for kids (it usually starts in June)—spots fill up quickly!
The Home Depot offers workshops that are perfect for mini-makers. Simply pre-register online, and then show up on the selected Saturday to build fun projects like a picket fence planter. At the end of the two-hour workshop, kids receive a certificate of achievement, a workshop apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
Does your artist dream of paint, paper, glitter, and glue? If so, Michael’s Camp Creatolgy is the perfect way to beat the summer brain drain. Information for Summer 2024 will drop in late May, but camps usually run from mid-June to mid-July and are for ages 6 & up. If you don't want to sign up for the in-store classes, online programs are also available.
Cost: The classes are free, but the required materials cost $40 for the entire summer.
Budding bowlers can perfect their technique all summer long thanks to Kids Bowl Free, which allows them to play up to two games a day free of charge. All that's missing is a pair of those sweet bowling shoes. To find a participating bowling alley near you, click here.
Sometimes a dark and cool movie theater is the only way to beat the heat. Your kids can sign up for a punch card or show up at participating Megaplex, Cinemark, and Regal theaters to catch a fun, kid-friendly flick for just $1-$2. Even better, most movies show before noon, making it easy to catch a flick and head home for nap time.
Xanadu your heart out and head for the local roller rink this summer. Whether your kids like to skate or rollerblade, a few laps will get their blood pumping, and the cool, A/C-induced temps are a total bonus. We scoped out this lively mountain town and found the best things to do in Breckenridge with kids.
1. Enjoy historic Main Street and downtown Breckenridge.
This charming historic districts has plenty of modern-day perks and interests to keep the kids interested. Wander into Peek-a-Boo Toys, a speciality shop filled with toys and games, and stock up on sweets at Fuzzywigs Candy Factory. Rub the replica gold nugget for good luck at Prospector Park, check out the free history exhibit at the Welcome Center, blow off steam at the Blue River Lawn, and find the toddler sandbox and play area at the Blue River Plaza. Don’t leave without getting a cookie sandwich from Mountain Top Cookie Shop!
2. Experience Country Boy Mine.

This now-shuttered gold mine is a short distance from the heart of Breckenridge, and it’s something you won’t forget. You’ll walk almost 1,000 feet into the heart of the mine and learn what it was like for miners in the 19th century. There is also a chance to pan for gold, pet the donkeys, go on a treasure hunt, and try the extreme sledding course in the winter. There’s also a fun gift store at Country Boy Mine filled with gems, fun toys, and historic books about the history of mining in Colorado.
3. Go hiking.
All those mountains you ski in the winter? There are trails all over them, and in the summer, it’s one of the best ways to soak in the mountain air, wildflowers, waterfalls, and lakes. Some of the best hikes for families include the Sallie Barber Mine Trail, Blue River Trail, and the Fairy Forest Sawmill Reservoir Trail.
There is no end to the options for dining in Breckenridge. One of our favorite spots is Tin Plate Pizza. Located in an old mining cabin in the historic district, this spot is steeped in history. Home to the town’s gold assayer, Tin Plate is where Colorado’s largest gold nugget, colloquially named “Tom’s Baby,” was cleaned and weighed at 13.5 pounds in 1887. Go for the meatballs to start and then choose from a dozen pizza options like our favorite, the elote pizza that’s topped with corn, roasted poblano peppers and goat cheese.
Downstairs at Eric’s has a great menu, 27 arcade games, and a laid-back vibe. Breckenridge Brewery has fantastic apps for kids (think giant pretzels), a relaxed space, and great beers for the parents. Crepes a la Cart is well worth the wait in line, The Blue Moose is your best bet for breakfasts, and the Kenosha Steak House has one of the best decks in town, cornhole, and room to run.
5. Stay at the Grand Colorado on Peak 8 for the ultimate vacation experience.

Whether you’re there to ski or snowboard, or if you prefer the mountain town in the summer months, the Grand Colorado has everything you need, plus more. The resort has multi-bedroom suites with full kitchens, so you can opt to eat in (be sure to grab groceries at the store outside of town, as there aren’t many grocery options in town) your apartment. The Grand Colorado on Peak 8 has an escape room, lawn games like giant chess, shuffleboard, Nintendo and Wii rentals, two indoor/outdoor pools, splash pads for little kids, an arcade room with everything from air hockey to pinball, a free little library, and five private movie theaters you can reserve at the front desk upon arrival. You’ll see kids having fun everywhere: the lobby, the water zone, and outside. When staying at the Grand Colorado, you’ll have direct access to Peak 8 and the BreckConnect gondola.
If you want to dine at The Grand Colorado at Peak 8, Robbie’s Tavern is perfect for burgers, sandwiches, a fantastic Philly cheesesteak, and other upscale pub fare. It’s also a great spot to watch snow enthusiasts in the winter and the outdoor fun of Epic Discovery in the summer months. Ullr Café is where you’ll find coffee, baked goods (try the sausage roll), and a fun happy hour at the end of the day.
6. Spend the day at Epic Discovery.
Epic Discovery is the place for summer guests to enjoy ropes courses, panning for gems, a bungee trampoline, a bounce house, an alpine slide, a rock climbing wall, mini golf, and much more. If you aren’t staying near Peak 8, you can ride the gondola from town up to the mountainside for a day of fun. Epic Discovery is open from late June to Labor Day daily from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm, and the BreckConnect gondola is open daily from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm.
7. Enjoy the art scene.

From a downtown full of sculptures to live theater performances, Breckenridge is full of ways to explore the arts. We loved discovering these points of interest along Main Street as well astracking down the famed Breckenridge Troll in a nearby park. Named Isak Heartstone, this 15-foot tall wooden troll sculpture is located on the Trollstigen Trail next to Illinois Gulch Trailhead. You can walk here from Main Street to check out this massive sculpture by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who is known worldwide for bringing awareness to recycling and upcycling by building great things out of trash.
Another one of the best things to do in Breckenridge with kids is to catch a show at the Riverwalk Center, where live music and other events happen weekly (most are all-ages appropriate!). In August, you can enjoy the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts, when dozens of art events are held in parks, on trails, and in cultural venues.
If you’re looking for a indoor things to do in Breckenridge with kids, then Mountain Top Explorium is the place! Kids will love the Mountain Top Medical Center exhibit, where they can check X-rays, rescue skiers stranded on a slope, review vitals, and be first responders! Another fun pretend play area is the Wonder Lab, where kids can write their names on a glow-in-the-dark board, their shadows, and create a design on a giant Lite Brite.
Other exhibits include the Rocky Mountain Wildlife exhibit, the Tot Spot, and the Kidstruction Zone. They offer a summer day camp and guided astronomy sessions are coming soon.
9. Ride bikes along the Blue River Bikeway.

The Blue River Bikeway runs through the heart of town. The paved path is perfect for families who want to enjoy the mountain views. If you have toddlers or young kids, be aware that part of the path is on an incline, so you might benefit from renting a bike with a seat attachment. Don’t forget to pack lots of snacks and water and stopping at the playground at mile 3 is a must.
All throughout town, you can find ski shops that double as bike rental shops during the warm months like Elevation Cycles. Book a guided tour of the mountain bike trails with Colorado Adventure Guides to increase your skills or try something you’ve never done before. It’s a great way to view the area from a different vantage point and explore as a family.
Keep in mind that Breckenridge’s elevation can hit you hard when you arrive. Be sure to hydrate for a few days before you arrive, as well as while you are in Breckenridge. And, reapply sunscreen when you are out and about.

Lord of the Rings fans will geek out at the opportunity to stay a night in a hobbit house. Ahoy, sailors! Grab your sleeping bag and pillow and spend the night aboard the U.S.S. Lexington, a retired aircraft carrier that has been docked in the Corpus Christi harbor since 1991 as a living history museum. Overnights on the battleship mean a unique first-person lesson in history: Not only will you get to bunk in the crew's original quarters; you'll also get a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship and hear stories from its past (the ship was heavily used during World War 2). The Royal Caribbean Icon of the Sea is impressing us even while it’s still under construction
There’s a good reason Royal Caribbean is a favorite cruise line of families: it’s downright impossible to experience boredom on its ships. From expansive pools to immersive entertainment and standout dining, it has paved the way for much of the industry. And when the highly anticipated Icon of the Seas welcomes guests in early 2024, it will become the world’s largest ship to ever set sail, introducing cruisers to never-before-seen at-sea experiences and classic staples of the brand.
We recently had the opportunity to visit a currently in-construction Icon of the Seas at Finland’s Meyer Turku, largely regarded as one of the finest shipyards in the world. On any given day, up to 3,000 workers are tasked with making this almost unfathomable dream a reality.

To be frank, this ship gives new meaning to pushing the envelope. And avid cruisers are already eating it up with its first public sailing completely selling out in less than 24 hours.
At 20 total decks, the 1,198-foot-long ship can accommodate up to 7,600 guests and is being billed as “the world’s best family vacation.” The name of the game here is bigger and better than ever before—a theme you’ll notice throughout. It’s an innovative amalgamation of adventure that combines foodie delights, a multitude of entertainment, relaxing poolside finds, and theme park fun all wrapped up into one vacation. It’s truly a playground for the young, the old, and everything in between.

The most water-based fun at sea

If you’ve ever been on a ship with limited pool venues, you know what a drag that can be as spaces quickly fill up with guests—that won’t be a problem on Icon of the Seas. With the Icon setting sail to the Caribbean, pristine weather can be enjoyed from a whopping 7 pools and 9 whirlpools—adding up to a total of 62% more water surface area than previous liners.

Chill Island, one of the ship’s neighborhoods, will act as the heart of the water-based fun and be complete with the brand’s first-ever swim-up bar and 4 of the ship’s pools across its three levels.

Here, guests will find the largest pool ever at sea, Royal Bay, outfitted with lush palm trees and in-water seating, and an adults-only retreat. The Hideaway, located at the ship’s stern, will feature the first suspended infinity pool at sea offering 180-degree stunning views.

The self-proclaimed adrenaline junkies will clamor over Thrill Island, home to Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea. There are 6 record-breaking water slides to choose from, including the tallest drop slide at sea and the first open free-fall slide at an incline of 66 degrees.

Not for the faint of heart, Thrill Island will also house Crown’s Edge, an over-the-sea hybrid ropes course-meets-skywalk where guests will hang 154 feet above the waves alongside the ship’s crown and anchor emblem.

Royal Caribbean splits the layout of its ships up into several different themed neighborhoods—and Icon of the Seas is welcoming a mix of cruise fan favorites, like a new-and-improved version of Central Park, along with new neighborhoods.

The all-new Surfside solves a common problem associated with family-friendly destinations: kid-focused areas with virtually nothing for the parents or grandparents to enjoy. The colorful, open-air promenade was specifically designed for young families and promises to be a place where the entire family can enjoy the day with something for everyone. Little kids can splash around across its water experiences, like playscapes and pint-sized slides, while parents can have fun too with a bar that features menus for both kids and adults.
Attached to Surfside, families can find easy access to the complimentary Adventure Ocean, the cruise line’s award-winning youth program. New for the Icon, ‘Admiral Awesome’ will be a sort of new-age, kid-centric cruise director designated with keeping the fun going for families as the head of LOL (leader of laughter).

Teens and tweens can often feel out of place when cruising as it can be challenging to navigate social situations. Royal Caribbean attempts to ease that with a hangout just for them, Social 020. The posh lounge will up the ante with a comfy, lounge-style setting, video games, and movie viewing. There are plenty of other onboard activities to break the ice, like a mini golf course, rock climbing, FlowRider surf simulator, a sports court, laser tag, an escape room, and the largest ice-skating arena at sea.

There’s no getting around it. Cruise ship cabins can prove to be tight quarters when traveling with your family. For the Icon, Royal Caribbean is introducing a staggering 28 categories that range from standard rooms to suites with a specific focus on accommodating families comfortably. With 2805 staterooms, these intuitively laid floor plans maximize the square footage availability ensuring everyone can have their own space and storage. Conveniences include split-design bathrooms (a game changer when getting ready for the day!) and secluded bunk alcoves for kids complete with their own televisions.
For the ultimate splurge, Royal Caribbean will be debuting the one-of-a-kind ultimate family townhouse, a three-story family suite donning a white picket fence-lined yard and an in-suite slide.
20+ dining experiences

Foodies rejoice! It’s safe to say that you won’t go famished on this new ship. There will be over 20 dining experiences, including new and returning signature options that range from casual window-service spots to a supper club—and that number cranks up to 40+ when you include bars and lounges.
AquaDome Market will be the line’s first-ever food hall, and a perfect solution to the family with differing cravings as the location will feature five different stalls with food ranging from savory crepes to Mediterranean delights. An all-new kid-approved buffet, located in Surfside, will operate morning, noon, and night ensuring you won’t have to leave the water-filled fun for a refueling bite.
An impressive amount of live entertainment

Entertainment is a beloved staple of cruising and the Icon will offer pretty much everything and anything you could think of, from comedy shows and karaoke to dueling pianos. The AquaDome features jaw-dropping 220-degree wraparound ocean views (and a soaring 55-foot-tall waterfall) with nightly entertainment housed in its AquaTheater. The highlight will be an aquatic show utilizing state-of-the-art projection technology and robotics.

In addition to Royal Caribbean’s original superhero show The Effectors, the flagship production will be a 90-minute Broadway-style staging of The Wizard of Oz utilizing a showstopping digitally created tornado.
