There’s a lot of great things about living in Chicago (the people, the sports teams, the hot dogs, the best pizza in the world) but let’s face it, the winters leave a bit to be desired. Cue Four Lakes Alpine Snowsports in Lisle for some much-needed winter fun for the whole family just 45 minutes west of Chicago. From ski and snowboard lessons for beginners of all ages to a challenging terrain park for the most adventurous of boarders, Four Lakes is the close-by cure for your winter blues.

The Basics

Maria Chambers

Four Lakes has been turning ordinary flatlanders into bona fide skiers and boarders through its Ski and Snowboard School programs for sixty years. A member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America, Four Lakes’ teaching methods are up-to-the-minute, reflecting the latest technical understanding and methodologies. Their experienced instructors make learning how to ski and board fun and safe, so you can rest assured that you and your mini snow carvers are in good hands.

Why It's Great for Budding Boarders and Skiers

Four Lakes is a great starter hill for kids with a budding interest in snow play. The facility itself is very small and is perfect when you're just looking for a couple hours of exhilarating fun, but aren't necessarily wanting to make a weekend of it. The hill little ones learn on is small, but not so small they get bored quickly. It'll take a couple of tries to master, but the tow rope makes getting to the top easy-peasy. Best of all, there's ample parking right at the entrance of the hill, so no lugging equipment (or tired skiers) too far.

Insider tip: If you're planning on hitting the hill regularly, we'd recommend investing in a pair of gloves with grippers on the palms. It helps little hands grip the tow rope and protects the gloves from tearing.

Ski School. . . Not Just a Great ‘90s Movie

Have a budding Bode Miller or mini-Lindsey Vonn on your hands? Four Lakes offers lessons for all ages and skill levels, both for skis and snowboarding. For the 2021-22 season, these lessons will be private or semi-private to reduce contact students have with each other on the hill. One-on-one private lessons are $60/hour. Semi-private lessons will be limited to 2-5 students per class and run $35/hour. Both private and semi-private lessons are typically available 7 days a week.

Small, but Mighty

Four Lakes isn’t just for beginners. It's a great place to brush up on your skills before that vacation to Vermont or Vail. The entire area is open to skiers and snowboarders of any level, and they also offer race training for skiers and a terrain park with a variety of boxes, rails and pipes. Whatever your level of experience, Four Lakes can accommodate. Just ask any one of the 20,000 skiers and boarders who visited last season.

Day and Season Passes

You can purchase a season pass for $325 and rip it up on the pow pow (translation: ski or snowboard) from mid-December until the season’s over—usually late February or early March. Can’t commit to the whole season? Buy a daily pass when you get the itch—those range from $24-$30, depending on the day.

Birthday Parties

During non-COVID times, Four Lakes is a great place to throw a winter birthday party. The kids will enjoy getting outside in the fresh air for physical activity and you'll enjoy not having 15 kids in your home. Choose a package that includes slope tickets, lessons and rentals or any combination of the three. Pizza and unlimited soda are an additional fee, and they’ll block out a section of the cafeteria for your celebration.

‘Tis the season, so bundle up, grab your brain buckets (translation: helmets) and head to Four Lakes for outdoor fun this winter.  Be sure to check their website to make sure the hills are open.

Shawn Johnson East is an Olympic gold medalist, “Dancing with the Stars” champion and New York Times bestselling author. Even so, she feels insecure like the rest of us. In a stunning new maternity shoot, she faced her doubts about her pregnant body head on—and documented the entire experience!

You can watch the 12 minute behind the scenes video below, as Johnson East and her husband Andrew discuss the thought process behind scheduling the shoot and her feeling during it, as well as Andrew’s reactions. Early on, she notes “I can sometimes struggle with pregnancy to feel beautiful.” Despite her doubts, the results are stunning, as she partners with photographer Nanda Santos for a studio shoot.

In the description on YouTube Johnson East wrote “This was so exciting. I’ve never done a shoot like this but it was SO exhilarating. I was really nervous at first honestly, but Nanda really made me feel so special and comfortable. Never in a million years did I think I’d want to do something like this, but I’m so glad I did. It was really empowering to go through that shoot and then getting to see the final product was even more exciting.”

A popular figure on social media, Johnson East has humorously chronicled pregnancy and mom life, including posting bump shots in her Olympic leotard and and dance challenges with Andrew. The couple had daughter Drew in November 2019 and will welcome a baby boy this summer––just in time to cheer on Team USA as they go for the gold!

Nestled along the San Francisco Bay in the Dogpatch neighborhood is the brand-new Crane Cove Park. This unique seven-acre bayfront park quietly opened at the end of last year and it offers a little something for everyone. From barbecues to a rocky beach, Crane Cove takes its historic surroundings and makes it into something families can enjoy for years to come. We checked it out and have the full scoop on what you need to know when you visit!

Port of SF

This public open space is the brainchild of the Port of San Francisco and it aims to preserve historic maritime resources while providing a major open public space full of opportunities for exploration. Crane Cove gets its name from the two cranes that remain preserved in this seven-acre park. Officially, they are Cranes 14 and 30, but unofficially they are named Nick and Nora after characters from the movie "Thin Man." Children will admire their stature, while adults can admire their history.

Jennifer Snyder

Probably the biggest draw of this park is the rocky beach where children can wade the slightly-warmer-than-Ocean Beach water while watching the paddle boards and boats sail by. Children may swim anywhere within the buoy limits but there is no lifeguard on duty. Pro tip: being water shoes and maybe even a wetsuit for the little ones. The rocks are tough on their sensitive feet, and the water can be quite chilly.

Kate Loweth

On the opposite side from the beach is a green space complete with picnic tables and a barbecue grill for public access. The convenient proximity to Third Street provides a wealth of coffee shops and restaurants for the parents in case you have a hungry child on your hands. Pro tip: Check out Neighbor Bakehouse for yummy treats and a little pick-me-up.

Jennifer Snyder

Just in case all of this isn't enough, there is lots of pavement for walking, biking, or scooting not only along the perimeter but also near a preserved railroad track that the kiddos will find exhilarating. The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is located at 18th and Illinois, and parking can be found along Illinois street. Pro tip: bring quarters, most parking is metered until 6pm.

This summer there will even be a Stand-up Paddleboard Summer Camp for children ages 8-15 years old at Crane Cove Park.  If you have a little adventurer on your hands and you're in need of some "me time," this might be the perfect solution. The camp will be held Mon.-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Note: Due to COVID, currently there are only Port-a-Potties available for any bathroom emergencies, or costume changes.

Beach Babes: The Best Swimming Beaches for Kids

It’s been four years since my son Stalen was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. He was 21 months old. I remember he was wild in the room as we waited for the doctor to come in and speak with us. He was throwing toys and picking crumbs from the carpet. He was pulling single plastic gloves from a box hanging on the wall. I was trying to hold myself together with strict composure but could feel the lump in my throat and the anxiety deep in the pit of my stomach.

The doctor calmly told me that Stalen was being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. I didn’t hear anything else even though I kept looking at the doctor and nodding and he kept talking. After a minute or two, he asked me if I had any questions. I smiled weakly and said no.

I had to sign a confirmation of diagnosis form which is forwarded on for services. My hand trembled as I wrote my name. I was so shook I didn’t even date the form like your supposed to. I took Stalen and high tailed it out of there.

I couldn’t wait for the solace of my vehicle. I remember the strong smell of a man’s cologne in the elevator. I was close to breaking. I remember fumbling through my purse for change for the parking pay Center. Ugh! Why do I always carry so much unnecessary crap in my purse?!?!

Finally, in the car, I grabbed my sunglasses even though it was a cloudy day in January. I wanted to conceal the tears slowly rolling down my cheeks. I looked in my rear-view mirror and there he was…my sweet baby. My whole world, in his own world. He was smiling, and staring off out the window. Oblivious to it all.

I took three exhilarating deep breaths. I felt them in my toes. Those minutes in that doctor’s office had completely drained me to my core, I was attempting to refill my tank.

I had known for a couple of months without a doubt that he was autistic. But I had also known forever that he was amazing.

At that moment, things were different but really the same.

I was still me and he was always him.

There was no more wondering, it was confirmed. We were going to get the supports and services we so desperately needed. He was my little boy to love and nurture and teach things to. I knew he would do it all, but he would just do it in a different way-his way, in a different time and space.

I didn’t know much about autism.

I didn’t know what the future would look like.

I didn’t have all the answers but hoped for clarity over time.

I was completely certain of only one thing though. On that day, I knew my son just like I had known him from the very moment he took his first breath into the world.

I knew he needed me and I knew I needed him and that was enough for me to start the car and take us home.

This post originally appeared on Stalen’s Way Blog.

I am a proud wife, ASD Mom, Step-Mom. At 21 months, my son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. He is 5 years old and non-verbal. I have become a full-time stay-at-home mom. I am 1000% focused on raising autism awareness and helping my son live a full and fun life.

Dating can be a fun and exhilarating experience. Dating when you have children can make things a little bit more complicated. Dating.com conducted a study of members who reported to be single parents and uncovered why they were hesitant about beginning to date again.

Couple in restaurant

Among the parents surveyed, the biggest impediment to dating again were concerns over how their kids will react. 68% of parents do not reveal they have children on their dating profiles. Some parents are reluctant due to their uncertainty entering the dating scene again. It may have been years since they have been out on a date, so they simply don’t know what to expect.

Dating.com offered some tips to make the transition into the dating world less intimidating.

1. Make sure you are feeling your best. Being absent from the dating scene for an extended period of time might have you feeling out of touch, insignificant or flat out old. Nothing is sexier than confidence, so make sure you take the time to refresh your wardrobe, practice yoga or workout, take new pictures for your online dating profiles and do whatever it takes to boost your self-esteem.

2. Get online. See what the internet has to offer. There are lots of different platforms that cater to different preferences, find what interests you and create a profile.

3. Take things slow. Jumping straight back into dating after a long break may be weird at first. Test the waters by starting conversations with multiple people. Once you feel you have gotten back into the swing of things, you can take the next step and meet for coffee or dinner.

4. Talk to your kids and friends. Talking to your kids and friends or younger friends you feel comfortable talking to about dating, get their input. You’ll be surprised what kind of advice they have to give. You may notice that dating culture today is much more different than what you’re used to and these loved ones can be great resources and confidence boosters.

Once you finally connect with someone that you can see having a long-term relationship with, it will come time to introduce your kids to your new partner. Have a conversation ahead of time and be honest with your children regarding your relationship status. Gauge their reaction so you can avoid any surprises when they finally meet.

Keep the first ineteartion between your new partner and your children low-key and short. It is usually recommended to have the meeting take place at a location your kids enjoy, like a restaurant or ice cream parlor. Most importantly, don’t rush the relationship. Give your kids time to develop a bond with your new partner on their own.

New Study Reveals How Praise Affects Students’ Behavior

Dear Confessional,

I have been a complete disaster for the last week. Finally, the tides have changed because I boldly took the leap to change my professional direction and chase my dreams. My philosophy is “go big or go home,” so when I created my own door of opportunity and it actually opened, my life flashed before me. No, I wasn’t dying—I was reflecting, projecting, inspired, overwhelmed, thankful, and so truly happy. I really relish that feeling because it doesn’t surface often in life. Then I tried to remember when I felt like I was riding on this rollercoaster last, and that’s when it dawned on me—landing your dream job feels exactly like landing a date with your dream guy.

Even though I’ve been out of the dating pool for a really long time, I must admit, once the butterflies, jitters, and excitement to the point of nausea takes over, it’s pretty hard to forget. You just know it when you feel it.

1. Taking the leap: So you got the guts to get on the playing field and put yourself out there. It’s so exciting and makes you feel so vulnerable, doesn’t it? What if you get a “no”? What if it’s a “yes”? Ok, what do I say first? What if I sound stupid? Should I just go for it or practice what I’m going to say with a friend first? Wait, what the heck am I doing? Who do I think I am? Ugh, just stop over-thinking and just go for it already! Stop questioning yourself and don’t let this opportunity slip away! Ok, I’m doing this. I can do this. What’s the worst thing that can happen, right?

2. Crazy phone checks: OMG, I did it. I think I’m going to be sick. Let me check my phone now. Did he call? Nope. Ok, need to check my e-mail. Nothing yet. Maybe it went to Spam mail. Twitter? Ok stop right now, no cyber-stalking, what’s wrong with you? Chill out! Maybe there’s something wrong with my phone. Yeah, maybe I should power down and reboot? Ok, no, I’ll wait a minute first. No maybe I’ll check e-mail again before I do that.

3. Butterflies galore: Oooh, so excited I could throw up. Constant jittery jumping beans, I feel like I could jump out of my skin with anticipation! The shakey tummy is nonstop. Holy crap, will something please just happen?! But wait, not yet, there’s so much to do! What do I do in the meantime to get my mind off of it?

4. Meeting greeting: What do I wear? What should I say? What if I sound like a rambling idiot? I need to prepare. What if it gets awkward? Do I have anything in my teeth? I hope we hit it off. Do I look ok? Oh geez, I’m a mess. My hands are sweaty and my knee won’t stop shaking. Chill out, woman! Do I have anything in my teeth?

5. Call back: Wow, that was awesome. Do you think it went well? You think I came across ok? I really hope it works out. Let me check my phone and see if I got a message. Do you think I’ll get asked back?

After having four kids, spending the last decade either being pregnant or taking care of a tiny tot, and mostly working as a writer and editor for a trade magazine, taking a leap of faith and changing directions can seem a bit exhilarating, daunting, refreshing, and just right. What’s even better is when that defining moment occurs at the right place and at the right time. Just like in a relationship, sometimes you just know. The best part is grasping the life-changing enormity of it all.

Even though these last few days have felt like I’m going to be sick with overwhelming excitement and happiness about my new direction, I hope this feeling stays so vibrant and fresh. After my fourth child began school, and it was just myself for the first time since I was in my 20’s, I made the conscious decision to figure out who I truly am and what I want—and then to relentlessly and passionately chase my dreams.

I made a firm decision that during this time, I would wholeheartedly carry out my vision, do it in digestible doses, learn from it, grow with it… and most importantly, love it every step of the way. I feel most blessed to have landed my dream guy and enjoy my full family. Thankfully, I can now also relish in landing my dream direction that I have always wanted.

If you’re truly passionate about your vision, then work for it and live it. That’s how dreams become your reality.

The only way to reach the top of that professional mountain is with one small step at a time. Don’t look up and get overwhelmed— just focus on the simple path and each simple step that guides you there.

This is it—time to shine.

with Love,

Kids can often reflect a lot of their parents personality. Actress Sienna Miller recently revealed what it’s like having a mini me around and just how challenging and wonderful it can be at the same time.

“My daughter challenges me and is a real mirror,” Miller, told PEOPLE about her six and a half year old daughter Marlowe. “When you are raising a child you see aspects of your character in that person, reflected back, and it’s the most loving, intense relationship that I have. There’s nowhere to hide.”

Seeing your traits in your child can be both scary and exhilarating all at once. “She knows me, I know her,” the star continues. “She’s really stubborn, which is very like me. I see her as her own person but I also see genetic things. She’s heaven, my kid.”

Miller also revealed that she hopes to reflect more of her role as a mom in her movie roles and is looking for a kid-friendly project so that her daughter can see her work.
