The coastal views are unlike anything you’ve seen before

You don’t have to have a full week vacation to get some rest and recharge with your crew. Mendocino is the perfect option for a family micro-cation as you can drive there when work and school get out on Friday and enjoy the weekend on the coast. We have the full scoop on all the family-friendly Mendocino activities your kids will love including the Skunk Train railbikes and horseback riding on the beach. Book your Mendocino escape today!

Getting There

Kate Loweth

Just over three hours north of San Francisco, the drive to Mendocino County can definitely be part of the adventure. A less windy route takes you from 101 to exit at Railroad Avenue where you head to toward Bodega Bay on the coast. Cows, horses and goats will keep the kids entertained along the way. Stop at Bodega Bay Oyster Company for some local shellfish. If you time your arrival for Saturday or Sunday noon-4 p.m., they will be serving up barbecued oysters!

Bodega Bay is another great stop along your drive. Bribe the kids with taffy from Patrick's Salt Water Taffy (pink building on the coastal side of Highway 1 in Bodega Bay) and then grab some fried artichokes with a gorgeous view at The Birds Cafe.

Stock up for your Mendocino visit with a stop at Surf Market in Gualala. In addition to picnic staples like local cheese, bread and sandwich fixings, you can purchase some fresh fish or sausage from their extensive meat counter to cook up for your dinner.

If you are to driving through Anderson Valley don't miss The Apple Farm. Head off the main road for just a moment on the way into Hendy Woods State Park and you will find this adorable farm stand were they serve delicious apple cider and offer hard cider tastings on the weekend. Be sure to grab a bottle of the non-alcoholic variety to sip as your finish your drive through the redwoods. The Apple Farm also has overnight accommodations.

Adventures

Skunk Train – Fort Bragg
All aboard! Fort Bragg is where you can catch the Skunk Train for a ride through the redwoods along Pudding Creek. This train (so named because oldsters claimed that you could smell it coming before you'd see it) has both indoor cars and an outdoor car so that you can walk around and make the most of your ride. The Pudding Creek Express is a one-hour, 7-mile round trip tour that takes you over the first tracks laid down by the California Western Railroad. Snacks and beverages (including beer and wine) are available for purchase on the train.

Kids will love the experience of riding the railbikes and we totally recommend it for families. Two riders are seated on a double recumbent bike that rests right on the train tracks. With power-assisted pedaling, you and your partner make your way along the tracks for a 30-minute ride. When you get to your destination, you have some time to take a hike in the woods or grab a snack before you head back into town.

After your ride, check to see if the Mendocino Coast Model Railroad is open for visitors. Your Skunk Train ticket will get you in to check out over 1,300 feet of track that document the area's logging history. You may have trouble getting the little LEGO lovers past the kid-level train table out front (strategically placed to let them touch the LEGO trains and not the model trains inside).

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens – Fort Bragg
Color is everywhere at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The succulent garden offers colorful cactus and spots to sit and enjoy your afternoon. March and April bring the fragrant rhododendrons that thrive in this coastal climate. Come in the summer and the vegetable garden will be full of life. Stop by to see if any strawberries are ripe and try one for yourself.

Russian Gulch State Park – Mendocino
There are tons of state park options to get your redwood fix in Mendocino County. Russian Gulch State Park offers a view of a collapsed sea cave called Devil’s Punchbowl just a short walk from the parking lot (high tide provides the most drama). If you have more time to spend in the park, hike the Fern Canyon Loop Trail to check out the waterfall.

Catch a Canoe & Bicycles Too - Mendocino
Nestled in a small cove on Big River Estuary, just before it flows into Mendocino Bay, is the adventure destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Established in 1982, Catch a Canoe and Bicycles Too offers ultra-stable redwood outriggers, kayaks, canoes, SUP and bicycle rentals for anyone who wants to explore beautiful Big River and beyond. Cruise down the water to see seal or otters on shore and plenty of birds catching fish. You can even bring Fido along on the Canine Cruiser, a specially-designed rig that allows dogs to see all the action.

Ross Ranch Horseback Riding - Manchester
Go for a horseback ride on the beach or through the redwoods with the skilled horses of Ross Ranch. Kids 6 and up can participate in this experience (we highly recommend the beach ride!) that lasts about 1.5 hours in the saddle. You'll take a slow pace down to the sand where the horses will walk along a gorgeous and nearly-deserted beach.

Ford House Museum – Mendocino
If you've got some history buffs in your crew, definitely plan to stop at the Ford House Museum in Mendocino. Here you can take a look at a huge diorama depicting the town as it stood in 1890 (count how many water towers you can find!). Check out the whale bones and learn how whales use baleen to filter feed in the waters off Mendocino.

Kate Loweth

B. Bryan Preserve – Point Arena
Did you know that Mendocino County is home to giraffes, antelopes and zebras? Around 100 of these majestic animals live at B. Bryan Preserve in Point Arena and you can bring the kids there for a visit. They are currently offering self-guided car tours and guided tours aboard a 1974 open-air Land Rover where you can learn how they breed critically-endangered and endangered African hoof stock. You can even spend the night in one of the on-site cottages.

Point Arena Lighthouse – Point Arena
Get a bit of a history lesson along with a gorgeous view of the coastline when you visit the Point Arena Lighthouse. This non-profit that is completely dependent on visitors is a great place to spend the afternoon. Begin your visit at the museum where you can learn the history of the lighthouse and see the original 1908 First Order Fresnel lens that was removed from the lighthouse in 2009. Learn how the lighthouse keepers were responsible for keeping the light going and cleaning every nook and cranny of the lens. Head to the whale watch room where you can borrow some binoculars to try and spot a gray whale offshore. After your museum visit, climb the 145 steps to the top of the tallest lighthouse tower on the West Coast where you will get a 360 degree view of the coastline along with an informative lesson from the tour guide there.

Pennyroyal Farm – Boonville
Take your trip home via Highway 128 so that you can pass through Boonville, home to Pennyroyal Farm. This farmstead creamery and winery offers daily tours of the barn where you can meet the goats and sheep that live there. Learn all of their names (yes, each one has a name!), how these animals are raised and how their milk is turned into cheese. Time your visit with lambing season in the spring for an extra-special treat. Your tour ends with a wine and cheese tasting for the parents and a grape juice and cheese tasting for the kids.

Beaches and Tide Pools

Kate Loweth

Bowling Ball Beach – Point Arena
Bowling Ball Beach is so named because of the massive bowling ball-shaped formations that line the beach when the tide is low. These are concretions—sedimentary rock formed when mineral cements bind grains of sand or stone into larger formations. You can access the trail to Bowling Ball Beach at mile marker 11.41 where the sign reads "Park facing south only." Here, take the northern path across the bluffs and follow the stairs down. At the bottom, you will likely have to scramble across downed logs to access the beach. Just take it slow and the adventure will be worth it!

Glass Beach – Fort Bragg
Treasure hunters flock to Glass Beach to search the sands for glass made smooth by years of riding the waves offshore. From 1906 to 1967, everything from cars to batteries to bottles, cans and appliances were unceremoniously pushed over the cliffs into the ocean. Mother Nature turned this trash into treasure of tiny sea glass. Get the kids to search for colors from clear to the more rare reds and blues. Just make sure that all treasures get left behind for the next visitor to enjoy. As with all California State Parks, the glass found at Glass Beach is protected and should not be taken home.

MacKerricher State Park – Fort Bragg
A prime spot for tide pools, MacKerricher State Park is just three miles from downtown Fort Bragg. Stop in at the visitors center when you arrive to feel pelts from animals that live in the area and see how your size compares to that of a whale. Then follow the map to the boardwalk and seal watching station. If you arrive when the tide is low, the area has a massive tide pool that will keep the kids busy for hours. Look for colorful sea stars and speedy sand crabs. Then venture on down the boardwalk to look for seals sunning themselves on the rocks.

Where to Eat

Kate Loweth

Mendocino has no shortage of great spots to grab a bite for the road or to enjoy a meal with a view. Frankie's offers the kid-favorite combo of pizza and ice cream. The thin crust cheese satisfies any kid appetite and the candy cap mushroom ice cream is a sweet treat for adventurous eaters. When the sun is out and the fog stays away, pick a spot on the deck at Flow Restaurant where the view is gorgeous and the fish tacos are a favorite. If you are looking for a family friendly fine dining experience MacCullum House Inn staff is happy to accommodate your kids pallet. Although the restaurant does not have a kids menu the chef is willing to adjust some items to be sure your kids find something they like and the banana split with house made ice cream is delightful.

In Fort Bragg's Noyo Harbor, the Harborview Restaurant at the Noyo Harbor Inn gets top billing for gorgeous views and delicious food to go along with it. Book a spot on the deck and just might spot a seal swimming by during your appetizer course. So fun! You can also head to the harbor itself for some of the freshest fish you've ever had. We loved the casual vibe on the outdoor deck at Noyo Fish Company (definitely get the fish tacos).

The quaint town of Point Arena has a tiny coffee shop, Little Green Bean, that offers tons of area recommendations while you wait for your beans to be ground and your pour-over drip coffee to brew. Head across the street to Franny's Cup and Saucer to satisfy your sweet tooth. Open Wednesday-Saturday, favorites at Franny's are the macarons, giant gingersnaps and not-to-be-missed Friday donuts. The Point Arena Wharf has a coffee shop so grab a cup of coffee and walk the pier, climb some rocks and look for sea creatures in the tide pools.

Where to Stay

Noyo Harbor Inn

Noyo Harbor Inn—Fort Bragg

Located just above Noyo Harbor, you'll be off the main drag of Fort Bragg with views of the harbor right out your window. It's right down the street from the Skunk Train and Glass Beach, and just a short drive to the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. Families will enjoy the spacious rooms with balconies, giant ensuite tubs and coffee maker/mini fridge. The on-site restaurant offers top-notch service and some of the best food in town. The Little River Inn – Little River
Located right in the middle of all the Mendocino County action, the Little River Inn knows what keeps families happy when they are away from home. Each room on this property has rocking chairs with a view of the coast and if you are lucky, some amazing sunsets. Rooms are equipped with a small fridge, Keurig coffee maker, TV and WiFi. Borrow a game or movie from the front desk to keep the kids entertained, or hike down the trail to the nearby beach. Golf, tennis and spa services are also available on site. If you choose to stay in one of the onsite cottages you may even be able to enjoy a coastal view from your private hot tub. Definitely pick up a box of their fudge and a bag of their cookies when you check in.

The hotel's restaurant offers both breakfast and dinner with a view of the crashing waves or the hotel's beautiful garden. Breakfast choices include Ole's Swedish Hotcakes (the short stack is still big enough to share), Little River Inn scones and loads of egg options. If you are there for Sunday brunch, make sure you ask for your complimentary glass of champagne. For dinner, kids can choose from options like the monster burger (which really is quite large) or fish and chips. Give yourself a few extra minutes of peaceful dining and ask for their coloring packet—a dozen-page booklet that gives the history of Mendocino County and area highlights, all for you to color!

The ongoing efforts to revive the area have not stopped, and there’s still plenty to do

Hurricane Ian hit Fort Myers, FL, a year ago, and while the popular vacation destination took a devastating hit to beachfront homes and attractions, with determination and resilience, residents and business owners have worked hard to bring the idyllic spot back to its glory. We had a chance to visit the beach town this summer, and even with the ongoing work to re-open the main strip of property hardest hit by the storm, there were so many fun things to do in Fort Myers and in the surrounding areas that we were honestly surprised that we didn’t miss (too much) the long days in the sand and sun.

The beaches are open, as are restaurants farther off the main strip (like in Bonita Springs and surrounding areas) and family attractions like animal sanctuaries, fun parks, and science centers. The water has cleared up, and there’s nothing quite like the ocean in Southwest Florida. If you’re looking to support a hardworking community while enjoying a relaxing family adventure, Fort Myers is the place for you.

I was lucky enough to spend a few days in the area, and even with the ongoing efforts to revive the area, there are plenty of fun things to do in Fort Myers, FL, with kids.

Explore Bonita Springs

Wonder Gardens is in Bonita Springs and it's a fun thing to do in the Fort Myers area

This quintessential Florida town is just four miles from the beach, and the downtown area is filled with unique restaurants and shops. You can ride your bike along the main strip and enjoy attractions perfect for families.

A must is the Wonder Gardens, a botanical garden and refuge for over 300 rescued and rehabilitated birds and reptiles. It’s in the heart of Bonita Springs and is the perfect space for younger kids. Admire the Macaws and Peacocks, talk with a Cockatoo, and check out the conservatory that feels like it belongs in the garden of a Victorian mansion.

After your time there, walk over to Survey Cafe. One of our favorite meals was at this cozy French cafe. Housed in a former cottage that reminds you of Old Florida, we admired the patio shaded by oak trees and Spanish moss. A family-owned establishment, there’s a crepe option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and the Eggs Benedict was perfection. We wanted to come back for lunch to try the smoked salmon, the Ruben sandwich, and the veggie burger wrap, but we ran out of time. The next time we visit the area, Survey Cafe is at the top of the list.

Another fun dining spot is Waffle Monkey. If you plan on eating here on the weekend, be prepared to wait or get there early! The line at this modern breakfast eatery was out the door but worth the wait. As the name suggests, it’s all about the Belgian waffles here. However you want your waffle served, there’s probably an option. Think classic waffles served with syrup and powdered sugar, waffles topped with eggs and bacon, waffles loaded with banana, coconut, and honey, a waffled smothered in Nutella and peanut butter, and much more. The freshly roasted coffee will perk you up after one of these delicious concoctions.

Coconut Jack's is an iconic restaurant near Fort Myers

One restaurant we were thrilled to see open is the iconic Coconut Jack’s Waterfront Grill. Located a couple blocks from the beach, this legendary spot is known for its menu featuring local seafood. We started with the famous coconut shrimp and BBQ pulled pork nachos, which my son loved. The clam chowder was delicious, and although we didn’t try the grouper bites, we had serious food envy when we saw an order come out. The Mahi tacos are also a customer favorite; don’t forget to check out their fun cocktail options.

One of the best aspects of this spot is the experience. It is on the water, the wait staff is excellent, and the vibe is relaxed and fun. They also offer a free valet service, as the parking lot is cramped. Do not miss this spot while vacationing here.

Find Hands-On Entertainment

An afternoon at PopStroke is a fun things to do in Fort Myers

We loved hanging out at PopStroke for the afternoon. This open-concept restaurant has two 18-hole putting green courses designed by Tiger Woods. Fun for kids and adults alike, there’s not just the course but also a playground, an ice cream counter, ping pong, and corn hole. This location is one large patio with plenty of seating overlooking the golf area. The menu offers a variety of options from everything from fantastic hamburgers to baby back ribs, giant pretzels, quinoa salads, and a fun assortment of kids’ bites like mac and cheese, sliders, corn dogs, and, of course, the ever-popular chicken tenders.

A Southwest Florida staple for over 80 years, The Shell Factory should be at the top of your to-do list. Besides the world-famous gift shop that sells the largest selection of (you guessed it) seashells in the world, kids will love the fun park with zip lines, bumper boats, a climbing pole, mini golf, and much more.

They also have fun seasonal events, and the restaurant serves plenty of snacks for the family (adult beverages, too!). You’ll also find a newly renovated arcade room and a year-round Christmas shop, and the Nature Park is home to over 400 animals, a dinosaur park, and an outdoor playground.

One fun thing to do in Fort Myers with kids is spend a day at the IMAG History & Science Center. With 60 exhibits, you’ll need to take a family vote on what everyone wants to do. Check out the Living Lab, which includes a 3,600-gallon tank home to tropical fish and a replica of the USS Mohawk. The Sea-to-See Exhibit has twice-daily feedings and hourly demonstrations with sea urchins, sea stars, sea horses, and stingrays. For budding meteorologists, a visit to the Weather Lab, with exhibits like the IMAG TV studio, Science on a Sphere, and the Google Earth Wall will be irresistible.

In the Hands-On Hall, little ones will love the Imagination Playground filled with those fantastic big blue blocks that can be used to engineer creative structures, and thrill-seekers can explore the concepts of gravity and velocity in the Rollercoaster Builder area.

Another fun thing to do in Fort Myers, FL, is check out the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium. Explore the stars at one of two daily shows, visit the Raptor Aviary, or wander around on the trails that cover the 100-acre space.

Hang by the Pool (& Fireside)

Coconut Point Resort in Fort Myers

There are a few lodging features that create the perfect vacation equation whenever my kids and I take a trip. Pool? Check. Lawn games and fire pits? Check. On-site restaurants for every age and palate? Check. Comfy beds and friendly staff? Check and check!

When we arrived at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort, we were excited to see that every box was checked. Not only does the resort top our list of the best resorts in Florida with water parks, but the lawn spans from patio steps to the sand pit and climbing wall, and the massive fire pits welcome ten or more guests at a time. Choose from multiple dining options like Cool Beans, featuring a candy bar, to-go beverages, s’mores kits, and snacks, or Tarpon Springs, where guests dine on oysters, lobster, salmon, and other coastal favorites.

Events and activities vary, but there will often be live music and fun games for kids: limbo, relay races, 3-legged races, and even a craft or two.

Be Closer to the Beach

A year after the storm, many resorts closer to the beaches in Fort Myers are open. The legendary Pink Shell Beach resort is taking reservations and most amenities have re-opened. DiamondHead Beach Resort is also open with beach access, and Margaritaville Resort Fort Myers Beach is taking reservations starting in Jan. 2024.

The Fort Myers community is strong, and our trip put into perspective not only that this area of Southwest Florida will return bigger and better than ever, but even as they continue to build, a trip there will be one the whole family can enjoy.

These brilliant ideas will help you survive—and even enjoy—your next family adventure

When it comes to a road trip, it’s often about how you get there, not where you’re going. Make sure that journey is memorable for the right reasons with a few tips and road trip hacks we’ve road-tested ourselves. They might not prevent the inevitable “Are we there yet?” but we know they will ease some of the other trials of taking a long car ride with kids. And to mix it up, try our list of car games when they need a break from the screens!

1. Give the kids the map. Hand over your GPS during times of the trip when you actually know where you are going. Let the kids “navigate” and tell you which way to turn. Or hand them a road map and have them help figure out the route. Get tips on teaching kids how to read a REAL map here.

2. Bring enough headphones for each kid. It will ward off any complaining or whining. If your crew likes to listen to or watch the same thing, try BuddyPhones, kid headphones that come with an audio splitter for sharing.

3. Surprise observations. During the trip, have each person write down an observation or memory from the day. If you’re traveling more than one day, do it each day of the journey, there and back. Don’t share what you’ve written until you are home. Then have each family member read out loud their main “thought” for the day. It’s okay if it’s, “I wish we were there” or “I saw a giant clown on the side of the road.” You’ll get some laughs and relive the trip in a new way.

4. Use a shower caddy for mess-free eating. Tired of balancing lunch on your lap? Give each kid—and yourself—a caddy so that meals are contained in one neat place.

5. Stash plastic cutlery and napkins in the glove box. It’ll make eating in the car that much easier.

6. Make a killer playlist. It can make or break a road trip. Trust us. Find family friendly tunes, starting here.

7. Beat the sniffles. Use a rubber band to lash a full tissue box to an empty one. Use the empty one to dispose of used tissues right after using, so they don’t end up all over the car/on the floor/in your snacks.

8. Make up some car bingo. Purchase a stack of ready-made car bingo games, or go the simple route by making a “checklist” of cool things you see on the road. The first person to fill up a checklist gets to pick where you make a pit stop for dinner.

9. Hang a shoe organizer on the back of each front seat. Big kids will be able to reach for books, snacks, and games on their own (and ideally they’ll be able to put everything back, too).

10. Kick off your shoes. For long rides, many kids like to take their shoes off. Let them, but have a bag handy to stash the shoes or keep them by the door of your RV, so they’re easy to find for pit stops.

11. Download Sit or Squat. You’ll be able to scout clean bathrooms on your route. This is a road trip hack you can’t live without.

12. Chuck garbage into a plastic cereal container or old wipes box. They usually have lids so your vehicle won’t smell like Eau de trash. Put them throughout your RV or car!

13. Pack clothes in stackable laundry baskets (instead of suitcases). The idea is that each traveler has their own basket filled with clothes and other belongings (diapers, lovey, etc.). It’s much easier to see if you’re forgetting anything and it’s a cinch to load and unload.

14. For impatient travelers, use “Sticky Note Time Tabs.” How it works: Write increments of time (i.e. 1:15, 2:15, 3:15) on sticky notes and adhere them to the center console below the clock. Kids pay attention to when the clock time matches the sticky note time. When they notice it, you remove the sticky note (and give them a surprise, if you’re feeling generous).

15. Organize a glow stick dance party while driving at night. There’s nothing fun to see out the windows, so might as well bring the fun inside your vehicle. Hip hop hooray to kiddos’ fave tunes and score major brownie points for your efforts.

16. Cover seats with a fitted sheet. Be prepared for a mess by stretching a sheet over the seats. When you get to where you’re going all you have to do is shake the sheet out and BAM!… your ride is spotless once more. One of our more genius road trip hacks if we don’t say so ourselves.

17. Make edible necklaces for the journey. String flavorless floss with things like cereal, grapes, and pretzels. It will fill their bellies and keep them busy at the same time.

18. Get snap happy. Give the kids disposable cameras (or old smartphones) so that they can take pictures of what you’re driving by for a travel log.

19. Let the creative juices flow. Since playdough can get stuck in floorboards (and hair … and under fingernails), bring along a roll of aluminum foil and/or a box of pipe cleaners—both can be molded into shapes, animals, and skyscrapers.

20. Nip car sickness in the bud. If you or your kiddo gets nausea from reading on the road, simply tilt your head from side to side for it to go away. Just try it!

21. When you see a fun road stop… stop! This is how road trip memories are made. If you’re the planning type, visit roadtrippers.com to map out a few awesome layovers, and be sure to check out our favorite roadside attractions, too.

22. Pack a potty. This is an important road trip hack if you’ve got potty-trained littles: Open and lay a disposable diaper into the bottom of a toddler potty. If you’ve got miles to go before the next rest stop, pull over and let them use this—the diaper will soak up a #1 and contain a #2 until you find a proper spot for disposal.

23. Have plenty of other screen-free activities on hand. When your kids are bored of playing car bingo (it’s inevitable), have something else from our list ready to go.

100 things to do around San Francisco and the Bay Area that showcases the beauty, originality, and downright fun that makes our city a great place to not just visit, but also live

We’ve revamped our epic list of 100 best Bay Area activities the whole family will love, and bonus? You’ll definitely discover somewhere and something new that you and the family can explore, even for those in-the-know locals. Whether you’re looking for stroller-friendly hikes to try around the Bay Area, must-go museums in SF that deliver epic and learning, or family-friendly dining with a twist (we are a foodie destination after all), we’ve got something for you. Pro Tip: Bookmark this page for easy access to things to do during unexpected days off, summer and winter vacations, and when the grandparents come to town to visit

1. Play tourist for a day and explore PIER 39 including riding the carousel which is hand-painted with famous San Francisco landmarks. Don't forget to visit the sea lions and grab some edible raw cookie dough from DOUGHP! Also check out The Flyer, an epic virtual flight that takes you on a tour of San Francisco.

2. All aboard! Ride the rails through the redwoods on a real steam train in the Santa Cruz Mountains at Roaring Camp. This is a fun trip anytime but is especially exciting during the days of the year when Thomas the Tank turns up.

3. Keep it simple with a day at one of San Francisco’s innovative playgrounds, like Hilltop Park in Bayview. Bigger kids will love the thrilling concrete slides (bring cardboard for extra speed), while little ones will enjoy the tree-shaped merry-go-round.

4. No matter the season, it’s always ice cream weather in the Bay Area. Whether you love the high-tech creamy creations from Smitten or prefer a traditional experience at Fenton’s (the ice cream parlor featured in Pixar’s Up), there’s always room for a frozen treat.

5. Get your STEM fix at these museums where science is all around you like our fave, The Exploratorium. Channel that kid energy into creating art, making mega bubbles or even creating a mini-tornado by running around. Get Tickets Here

6. There's more to Monterey than just the aquarium. Take a road trip south and visit the Pacific Grove, where you can see Monarch butterflies in their winter home, or stroll around the storybook cottages of charming Carmel.

7. Do you detect a chill in the air? Then grab your camera and take the fam to these gorgeous Bay Area spots where you can see fall foliage in all its glory.

8. Level up family game night with a trip to a family-friendly arcade bar! One of our favorites? The Detour in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood on Sat. afternoons when the bar opens its doors to kids of all ages.

9. Did you know your library card can get you free entry to 200 state parks across California? Visit your local library and check out an entry ticket to outdoor fun all year long.

10. If your little ones love petting zoos, they’ll go wild for a nearby farm stay. Here you can hit the hay (literally and figuratively) at these local farms where you can also spend time with goats, alpacas, and even giraffes for a memorable mini break.

11. Spend some time on the islands—Alcatraz and Angel Island, that is. A quick ferry ride will get you there and you can learn all about the history of these amazing spots in San Francisco Bay. Be sure to book Alcatraz way in advance though—it’s one of the most popular things to do in San Francisco and weekends often sell out. Get Alcatraz Tickets Here

12. Cross the majestic Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin Headlands, where you can have a blast exploring Kirby Cove and stunning Sausalito. Plan to stop by Lappert’s Ice Cream for a taste of Hawaii in the Bay.

13. San Francisco might be all about that sourdough, but there are plenty of neighborhood bakeries for those with a sweet tooth. Grab a giant donut (like, bigger than your head giant) in classic flavors from Bob's Donuts or another one from our list of favorite donut spots around the Bay Area.

14. Don't let the weather get you down. We love indoor play spaces when it rains, especially Peekaboo Factory in San Francisco’s Richmond district. This amazing multi-level indoor playground is suited to kids from babies to 12-year-olds—and offers date-night drop-offs!

15. Go visit the whimsical sculptures at Cayuga Park. This is one of our favorite hidden gems in SF that only locals know about.

16. You don’t need to splurge on expensive gear to take the kids camping. Book a weekend at one of these glamping spots that offer campfires without having to pitch your own tent. We especially love Wildhaven Sonoma, which has comfortable tents available right on the Russian River.

17. The best things in life are free—especially these cool and quirky local museums! Learn about the space race at The Space Station Museum in Novato, cable cars at the Cable Car Museum in San Francisco, or even play vintage coin-operated arcade games when you visit San Francisco’s Musee Mechanique.

18. Speaking of free, there are loads of free things to do, right in Golden Gate Park. Home to the first public playground in the country, Koret Children’s Quarter still provides plenty of fun with slides, play structures, and an ocean-inspired climbing wall. While you’re there, search out the secret waterfall, spot ducks on the lake, and check out the authentic Dutch windmill.

19. Make your way to wine country with the kids for a family adventure the whole family can enjoy. These wineries are all set up to welcome everyone, tots included. Early fall is the best time to visit when many wineries host family-friendly events like grape stomping.

20. We’re always excited to find a restaurant offering more than chicken tenders on the kids' menu. The mini bento boxes from Oh Baby Sushi in Redwood City, and the kid-size curry and rice burritos from Kasa Indian Eatery in San Francisco are easy ways to introduce your kids to new flavors.

21. Muir Woods isn’t the only grove of old-growth redwoods in the Bay Area (although it's also a must-do). Take the little ones for a hike in the tall trees at one of these Bay Area parks.

22. Meet some animals up close and personal at these 22 wildlife centers across the Bay Area. Animal adventures also await at San Francisco’s California Academy of Sciences (check out the amazing albino crocodile!), or learn about farming life at Tilden Park Environmental Education Center.

23. Sleep in the trees! This San Jose treehouse has views of the Bay Area—you will not be disappointed.

24. Swimming’s not just for summer! Grab your goggles and dive into one of these indoor pools that are open year-round. We love Silliman Center in Newark for its lazy river and water slides, or the Great Wolf Lodge in Manteca if you want a weekend of splashing.

25. Take a San Francisco Big Bus Tour and get to know the city better. Our guide includes the best stops for young kids, including fun playgrounds, museums, and, most importantly, where to get the best coffee.

26. Cast your fishing line at these local lakes and piers where dinner is waiting. If you’re a newbie, the Golden Gate Park Anglers Club offers lessons once a month to anyone who wants to get started.

27. Kids love dim sum and who can blame them? These hot spots are where dumplings are king. YUM.

28. Where's the only place you can visit an aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum, all under one “living” roof? Our California Academy of Sciences guide is all you need to make the most of your visit. Get Tickets Here

29. Plan the best picnic and explore all that the Presidio has to offer (think abandoned batteries, in-city camping, and the Lucasfilm Headquarters).

30. Take some time to smell the roses at these worthwhile botanical gardens. We love Bean Sprouts Family Days at San Francisco Botanical Garden, where kids can get stuck into gardening activities and bug hunting.

31. Help your children become Junior Park Rangers at a nearby national park like Muir Woods National Monument, Alcatraz Island, or at Point Reyes National Seashore. These fun and educational programs get kids learning about nature, with a badge as a reward.

32. Visit Japan without getting on a plane. You can get all the ramen, taiyaki and Sanrio you want in San Francisco's Japantown. Plus an ice cream in a waffle cone shaped like a fish!

33. Spend the afternoon exploring these bike paths and bike parks that are perfect for tiny two-wheelers. There are plenty of safe, car-free bike paths across the Bay Area—Shoreline at Mountain View is especially popular with families.

35. Learn how to meet the lemurs and other animals with our insider's guide to the San Francisco Zoo—especially great on hot days, as it’s always comfortably cool at this ocean-side location. Get Tickets Here

36. Make your next meal a memorable one (in a good way!) at a themed restaurant where there's more than just burgers and fries. Embrace the retro-kitsch vibes at the Fairmont’s Tonga Room where you can sip cocktails (mocktails for the kids) around a lagoon while listening to a live band for a tropical staycation.

37. Every kid deserves a spot where they feel welcomed. These playgrounds and play spaces offer resources for special needs kids so that they can join in the fun with their peers.

38. Kids, the dinner is on you! Let the kitchen pros teach them the ropes at these local cooking classes. Make your own single-origin dark chocolate from scratch at San Francisco’s Dandelion, or make farm-to-table pizza at Hidden Villa in the Los Altos Hills—all great ways to teach kids about where their food comes from.

48. Plan a trip to Santa Rosa and book a night at Safari West, an animal park where you can stay overnight in safari tents for a wild weekend away.

50. Bring Fido along when you dine out at one of our favorite dog-friendly eateries. Good to Know: Not only will 7 Mile House in Brisbane welcome your furry friend, but the historic eatery also offers a dog-only menu and a "yappy hour" where they can score a free peanut butter biscuit.

51. The Children's Creativity Museum located in SOMA is ideal for kids ages 2-12. Outside the San Francisco Bay (Pacifica Pier, for instance), you can keep Dungies (in season only).

If you are lucky, you’ll find sea anemones, sea stars, urchins, and more

Tide pools can almost feel like visiting another world as they reveal parts of nature that are usually hidden making them the perfect way to explore nature with curious kids. With so many so located in the Bay Area and just beyond, it’s always a great day to check out the tide pools. Check the tide schedule, and confirm that the beaches are open (many are under repair after recent storms), pick a time when the tides are the lowest for best viewing, and head off on your next family adventure. Sea anemones, sea stars, crabs, and more are all visible in the pools that are created when the tide recedes. Many of these spots have nearby cliffs with amazing views perfect for whale watching. Grab your crew and ready to explore one of the spots below!

San Francisco

China Beach
Not only is China Beach a great spot for a photo of the kids with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, but this beach also has a grill and picnic tables (plus bathrooms, yay!) available for public use. The entrance is located on Sea Cliff Ave and at low tide, head down the long flight of stairs to the sand and take a walk along the shore towards Baker Beach to check out the sea anemones, mussels, and sea stars clinging to the rocky crevices. Parking can be tricky so arrive early in the day for the best chance of grabbing a spot in the small parking lot and lease be a good neighbor when parking. More info

Mile Rock Beach at Lands End
Not technically tide pools, the rocky beach at Lands End offers up access to vibrant marine life. The most direct way is to park at the Legion of Honor parking lot, walk along the golf course to Lands End Trail and follow the signs to the Mile Rock Beach stair trail. The hike is well worth it for the beautiful views of Golden Gate Bridge and access to marine life without leaving the city. If you are lucky you may see some whales or sea otters as you walk along the trail at Lands End. More info

East Bay

Crab Cove (Crown Memorial State Beach)
Yes, Alameda has tide pools. Crab Cove Visitors’ Center brings marine and shoreline exploration to the East Bay. Turn off Central Ave. at McKay Ave and you'll find the visitors center where they have aquariums, sea life viewable under microscopes and history about the city of Alameda. Pillar Point
A little further south of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, this 3-mile stretch of protected beach, tide pools, marshes, and bluffs is a great place to bring the kids (picnic tables and restrooms). Sometimes you can find volunteer naturalists roaming the tide pools who are willing to point out sea urchins, barnacles, sea stars, and more. Check out more tide pools in the area here

Christine Lai

Linda Mar Beach (Pacifica State Beach)
This surfers’ destination is in a protected cove with a great beach for the kids. There is a small creek that empties into the ocean in the middle of the beach—making it perfect for little ones who want to get wet but aren’t interested in the waves. If you are there during low tide, head to the southernmost point on the beach and you’ll come across some great tide pools full of all sorts of crabs and sea anemones. This beach is popular with dog owners so be prepared to share the beach. Parking is $7 for 4 hours of fun $9 for the day, and if you get hungry there’s even a Taco Bell right on the beach. More info

Redondo Beach
Just south of downtown Half Moon Bay, this beach offers beautiful views without the crowds. The easiest access point to the tide pools is to park at the end of Poplar Street at Poplar Beach and then head south along the water about a mile to the tide pools. You can also take the scenic coastal trail along the bluffs above the beach but most of the paths down to the water a steep for kiddos. The walk along the shore takes you right past the Ritz-Carlton. More info

Pescadero State Beach
Between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, you will find Pescadero State Beach which includes three separate parking lots. The middle lot gives you access to the rocky shore and some awesome tide pools where you can spot sea stars and sea anemones a-plenty. Bean Hollow Beach Trail
South of Pescadero this 1.5-mile hike has free parking, lots of sun, and access to sea life. In addition to wildflowers, you can find sea lions, sea stars, and crabs. More info

Just 100 yards north of the hostel at Pigeon Point Lighthouse the tide pools and rocky ledges are only visible during low tide. While you are there check out the lighthouse museum and keep an eye out for whales and sea lions. More info

Natural Bridges State Beach
This beach is great for viewing sea life as well as the naturally formed rock bridge out in the water. Parking is $10, or park just before the beach entrance on Swanton Blvd. for free if there’s a spot. If you head north along the beach you can climb the rocks to access the tide pools. This can be tricky for little ones, so ask at the Visitor Center for directions to get to the pools through the neighboring mobile home park. Also nearby is the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, another great place to learn about Bay Area marine life. More info

Martins Beach
This hidden gem is only accessible from a private road. After multiple court appeals the beach has been declared open to the public. It is possible that the gate will be locked when you arrive but at this time the local sheriff's department has said it will not cite individuals who climb over the gate and walk down the road. Parking is $10, cash only, but you can also park and walk. At high tide, it's a beautiful sandy beach surrounded by bluffs and private homes, but if you are able to come at low tide you can explore the tide pools at the base of the shark fin rock. The shark fin rock has a rock arch that is only visible from the north. More info

Friends of Haystack Rock

Asilomar State Beach Rocky terrain, crystal clear blue water, and tons of sea life inhabit this beach in Monterey Bay. There is ample parking and the beach is even handicap accessible for beach wheelchairs. Watch where you step so that you don't crush the small creatures that reside there. The Point Pinos Lighthouse is a short walk along the coast but the bathrooms are not close by so plan accordingly. More info Point Lobos State Natural Reserve Hiking, wildflowers, and sea life galore are the features of this picturesque area of Carmel. Weston Beach has the best tide pool, just south and west of the main entrance. There's a field guide to the tide pool life that you can take with you. If you are lucky you may spot a sea lion or otter in the waves. Volunteer docents are available to answer questions at the Sea Lion Point parking lot most days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. last entry 4:30 In addition to the tide pools you can hike to visit the Whalers Cabin, the small cabin built by Chinese fishermen located on the bluff above Whalers Cove is now a cultural history museum. Agate Beach
Agate Beach is part of the Duxbury Reef State Marine Sanctuary—the largest soft shale reef in California—which creates an incredibly biodiverse coastal area with whales, sea lions, and many different types of shorebirds. On this 2-mile stretch of beach, a kid exploring the rocky tide pools may come across a giant green anemone which is rumored to measure up to six inches across! Dogs on leashes are permitted. More info

Point Reyes National Seashore
The intertidal zones of the Palomarin Beach and Sculptured Beach are excellent places to explore the animals that enjoy the tides' eternal ebb and flow. Arrive with time to hike as both beaches require a decent walk from the parking area. You will be rewarded by seeing limpets, sand crabs, black turban snails, purple sea urchins, and more. More info

Mackerricher State Park
The tide pools at Mackerricher State Park are a little over three hours north of San Francisco and technically outside of the Bay Area; however, they are worth including if you are up for the longer drive. Located along the Mendocino Coast many of the pools are easily accessible to kids. Before going down to the pools check out the view from the observation platforms along the boardwalk. You will find the tide pools at the bottom of the stairs at Laguna Point. Seals can often be seen along the shoreline, over 90 species of birds visit the area, and whales can be seen from the nearby headland. More info

 Remember When Tidepooling:

  1. Don’t turn your back on the sea—ever. Engrossed in the fascinating sea life, it is easy to lose track of time, and before you know it the tide’s turning.
  2. Check the tide schedule to make sure you will reach your destination at low tide.
  3. Wear suitable footwear as barnacles and mussels can often be unforgivingly sharp.
  4. Watch out for slippery seaweeds and slimy rock areas where it is easy to lose your footing
  5. Be gentle—Use a two-finger stroke rather than a one-finger poke. If the animal is startled, you may encounter stinging cells or claws.
  6. If you've moved rocks to look at animals underneath make sure to place them back like before else the sea creature might be too exposed to the elements.
  7. You can take pictures of sea life and upload it to the California Academy of Science's mobile app iNaturalist, and get help identifying your find.
  8. Take only pictures and leave only footprints. Try to not disturb the wildlife.
