The Super Mario Bros. Movie isn’t the only film on the 2023 Illumination roster. The animation studio’s next action-packed comedy is about a family of ducks, coming this holiday season.

If you’ve watched Despicable Me on loop, gotten swept up in the Minion madness alongside your tots, jammed along to the Sing soundtrack (in the car…alone), and semi-successfully dodged, what felt like, never-ending requests for a puppy after The Secret Life of Pets, then you’re an Illumination household.

And if you thought this powerhouse was going to lay low after the smashing success of their recent The Super Mario Bros. Movie, think again. The trailer for their new family feature film, Migration, just dropped, and let’s just say, we’re in for a full flight of roaring laughs, wholesome feels and stunning animation that’ll fill our hearts with wanderlust this holiday season.

Parents, get excited. We’re seeing another blockbuster hit on the horizon.

Everything We Know About the Migration Plot So Far

Our first impression is relief and joy that we’re still getting what we’ve come to expect and love from Illumination: jokes that moms and dads will enjoy, relatable characters (that may even make us question our own behavior), and an entertaining storyline that’s packed with valuable lessons—which stray from the signature patriarchal plot of a damsel in distress we grew up seeing as kids ourselves.

Migration follows the Mallards, a family of ducks who are eager to take flight and explore new horizons. There’s only thing in the way of mom Pam, teenage son Dax and duckling daughter Gwen from seeing the whole wide world: their overprotective father Mack.

For Mack, nothing could be better and safer than his flock paddling around their New England pond forever (helicopter parent vibes, am I right?). But once Pam catches wind that a local duck family traveled to far-flung places and had an epic journey, FOMO sets in. She convinces Mack into going on a family vacation they’ll never forget, like moms do so effortlessly.

From their New England home to New York City and then down south to tropical Jamaica, the Mallards experience all that comes with your typical family roadtrip, including mapped-out plans quickly going sideways, stepping out of your comfort zone, good ol’ family bonding, meeting new friends, and everything else in between.

Migration is Voiced by Actors You Know & Adore

Think you recognized anyone in the trailer?

The film is led by Oscar® and Emmy nominee Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Eternals) as the Mallards’ worry-wort dad Mack and Emmy nominee Elizabeth Banks (Hunger Games and Pitch Perfect franchises) as Pam, the bold and sharp matriarch.

Iconic Danny DeVito, the voice behind legendary animated characters that have defined most millennials’ childhoods, co-stars as Mack’s grumpy, unimpressed Uncle Dan. Don’t we all have one of those?

There’s no guesswork needed to pinpoint Awkwafina, whose recognizably deep, raspy octave is behind the scrappy leader of a New York City pigeon gang. The remaining cast includes the talent of Keegan-Michael Key who plays a homesick Jamaican parrot locked up in a Manhattan restaurant, and David Mitchell (Peep Show) as the yogic leader of a mysterious duck farm.

The Impressive Team Behind Migration

The White Lotus fans—and those of us who wanted to join a rock band after School of Rock—will be pleased to discover that Migration’s screenplay is written by renowned screenwriter Mike White. If that wasn’t enough to win us over, the film is also directed by Benjamin Renner who recently received an Oscar nomination for directing the critically-acclaimed French animated features Ernest & Celestine and The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales.

Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri rounds out the team as the movie’s producer, well-known for his creative role in the studio’s smash hits.

Mark your calendars now for a movie-going family date night when Migration hits theaters on December 22, 2023. Until then, we’ll join our kids in constantly chanting Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches.

Will it be a mini golf, baseball, or go out for ice cream in your pjs type of date night?

Take advantage of later bedtimes or school breaks and go out as a family on the town (bonus: no sitters needed for these family-friendly adventures!). Of course, if you are looking for a kid-free adventure, you can check out our list of parent-only date night ideas around San Francsico as well. But for now, we’re hanging with the kids—from mirror mazes and mini golf, to a nighttime Ferris Wheel ride, we are sure these special outings with entertain the entire squad.

Apple picking, epic roadtrips, and where to see fall foliage—check off all your Bay Area fall bucket list activities before the season is over

Fall in San Francisco is one of the best times to enjoy our glorious city. And with the Bay Area’s scorching days of the summer well behind us, it’s time to get out and enjoy the cooler weather with annual traditions like nearby apple picking, fabulously fun fall festivals around San Francisco and pumpkin spice everything. In order to keep your fall FOMO at bay, keep reading for all of the fun stuff to do in San Francisco this fall (and for more ideas, check out our Bay Area family date night ideas and our favorite Bay Area eateries with outdoor seating).

1. Nothing screams San Francisco in the fall than a trip to a local Bay Area u-pick apple farm with bushels of them open for picking now through mid-Nov. Pick the fruits to turn into a homemade apple pie, or cheat (we won't tell) and pick up a famously fresh dessert like a Dutch Apple or Pumpkin Pie from one of our favorite spots, Gizdich Ranch.

2. Fall is the best time for a family road trip from San Francisco for on-point fall foliage. Drive into the Sierras to see the beautiful aspens change color, or up to wine country where wine growers are celebrating the harvest and the autumn sunsets are breathtaking.

3. If you haven’t done it yet, this is your sign to finally get your tickets to ride the SkyStar Observation Wheel at Golden Gate Park. Standing 150 feet tall and covered in one million LED lights, this is a spectacular addition to the park and is a beautiful way to view the city—especially at night.

4. Discover the haunting musical melody of the Wave Organ—one of our favorite hidden gems in San Francisco.

5. Get into the Halloween spirit and check out Alcatraz Island, one of the Bay Area's spookiest spot! The Alcatraz tour is self-guided, so you can take your time and explore at your own pace—ideal for families and kids who want to race ahead.

6. An absolute San Francisco fall must-do? Pick up a decorative gourd (or two) at one of these local pumpkin patches. Bonus? At a bunch of these must-go pumpkin picking spots, you can also hop on a hayride, get lost in a corn maze, and try your hand at pumpkin bowling.

7. Live it up and take the kids for a visit to our local haunted house, the Winchester Mystery House. Despite its spooky reputation, the mansion tour is fun and family-friendly. Kids under five go free!

8. Get lost (and found again) at a Bay Area corn maze (discover which one holds the world record for being the world's largest!). Solve these giant puzzles together, then have fun petting farm animals, tire out the kids on giant jumping pillows before choosing a pumpkin to take home.

9. Grab your rods and reels and spend the day fishing at these kid-friendly Bay Area fishing spots. You can even get free lessons at Golden Gate Park to get you started.

11. Even though the nights are getting colder, you can still enjoy the outdoors by renting a cozy camper van for the weekend. Everything you'll need for a quick and easy weekend to explore the coast, forest, or mountains is included.

12. Pools are not just for summer! Keep the splish-splashing fun going at an indoor pool in the Bay Area. Or head to the newest Great Wolf Lodge for a whole weekend of family time in the huge indoor waterpark.

13. Make the most of the sunshine while it lasts. Take the kids to a playground and enjoy some water play in a beautiful natural creek before it (officially) gets too cold for splashing. If you’re in the South Bay, Vasona Park in Los Gatos has both a creek and a lake!

14. Cooler temperatures are ideal for a day at the zoo, and Bay Area zoos are holding events this year to make your visit extra special. Boo at the (Oakland) Zoo is holding a fun scavenger hunt for kids, while the SF Zoo is hosting a Boo at the Zoo as part of their Zootober Fest with a costume parade and a giant hay maze.

15. Not too hot, not too cold: autumn is the best time to take a hike in the Bay Area. From strolls with spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, to hikes through the redwoods, we love hitting the trails.

16. We've sussed out the best Bay Area fall foliage spots where you can enjoy a kaleidoscope of color as the trees turn vivid colors of red and gold.

17. There is no better season than fall to visit wine country—with kids in tow! These family-friendly vineyards near San Francisco welcome young children (and dogs).

18. F is for fall and festivals. Find out where to go in our fall-tastic festival guide for the Bay Area. From Diwali to Día de los Muertos, there’s a lot of fabulous fall fests going on this time of year.

19. The days are shorter which means more time to play after dark. Our family date night for Bay Area families guides has tons of inspo on what to do and where to go with the whole family in tow, from bowling and mini golf to stargazing.

From only-in-San Diego events to nature galore, here are 100 reasons why San Diego is the best place for kids and families

Lucky for us, San Diego is one of the top vacation destinations in the nation. And while it may be the 2nd biggest city in the state, its laid-back lifestyle and easy-breezy attitude make it feel more like a beach town (with all the glorious bells and whistles of metropolitan hub like access to cultural events, world-class museums and food—let’s not forget the delicious food). From incredible parks that kids will love, and only-in-San-Diego bucket-worthy activities to hidden gems sprinkled around SoCal, we’ve rounded up the best 100 things to do in San Diego—whether you’re a local and are looking for some things to do or just visiting for a bit—this list will keep your calendar full and your memories stacked all year long.

1. With over 30 beaches dotting San Diego's gorgeous coastline, hitting the sand and surf tops our list of must-dos. With so many options, you can find a sandy stretch that's right for your crew. Our detailed beach guide highlights the best beaches for babies, toddlers and big kids, as well as where to go to learn how to catch a wave or putter around a tide pool.

2. Show your kiddos what life was like living on a floating city with a visit to the USS Midway Museum—the largest aircraft carrier in the world that you can tour. The self-guided audio tour, narrated by former sailors, offers a lot of history and drops loads of knowledge like the fact that over 200,000 sailors have worked there throughout the years. PS: Your budding pilot can earn Junior Pilot Wings—visit the information booth for more intel.

3. Take your little minifigs to LEGOLAND but before you go, be sure to read all of our must-know tips when visiting LEGOLAND like how to reserve 'n' ride to avoid lines or what it's like to spend the night at the LEGOLAND Hotel. And make sure to catch their newest attraction, The Ferrari Build and Race where your little Danica Patrick can design, build and race their own car.

4. Spend the day exploring the magnificent 1,200-acre urban cultural park, Balboa Park, hands down one of the best things our city has to offer its residents and guests. Our insider guide to Balboa Park has everything you need to know to make the most of your visit with kids, including hidden gems like the California Tower where you can climb a secret staircase and get one of the best views of the city, and how to reach Junior Ranger status by completing the Junior Ranger Scavenger Hunt.

5. Ride the historic Carousel at Seaport Village. Handcarved in 1895 and only four bucks a whirl, it's both affordable and iconic. When you’re done with the spin you can stroll along the bay, grab a pretzel and lemonade, then head out to watch kites flying in the air in the park near Seaport Village.

6. People from all around the world flock to the world-famous San Diego Zoo. The most popular exhibits are the panda bear family and the polar bear plunge. Both have long lines so hit these spots first or be prepared to wait. Also keep an eye out for the oldest resident of the zoo, a 100 year old Galapogos tortoise named Speed. And in the summer, you can rock and roar into the dark with Night Time Zoo experience where you can hang with the animals in the evening.

Salt & Straw at One Paseo

Looking for a cool spot for family date night? Salt & Straw isn’t your average ice cream shop by any stretch. The family-run business conjures up wildly imaginative San Diego-specific flavors made using ingredients from local businesses. Made locally in small batches, their ice creams combine local, organic and sustainable ingredients into unique flavors you can’t find anywhere else. Their menu has two parts: permanent fixtures (called “classics”) that are so beloved they remain year-round and a selection of limited-time flavors that rotate each month. Classics here include Honey Lavender (a delightfully light purple-hued treat), Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons (featuring hand-burned caramel with a deep, rich flavor you won’t find in your grocery aisle) and Chocolate Gooey Brownie (hot chocolate ice cream with hearty chunks of chewy brownie). Scoops are available in either cups or handmade waffle cones, in addition to milkshakes, special sundaes and pints-to- go.

Click here for info on local pick-up and delivery options.

Sweet Tip: The pints-to-go come in a collection of themed party packs. This Oh, Baby! gift pack is the perfect present for your bestie and their little scoop of joy.

Make This Summer Epic: 30 Things to Do with Kids in San Diego
Cheers! San Diego Breweries That Welcome Kids

Liberty Station is officially hitting its stride, making it the perfect spot to revisit for your next family field trip. The Point Loma destination is an ideal place to show your little San Diegans a piece of history —the station itself was once a Naval Training Center dating back to 1923. Today, the same spot is an exciting urban village, home to the ARTS DISTRICT, Liberty Public Market, a slew of new restaurants, shops, and plenty of green space for kids to run and play. Here’s a breakdown of what to do, where to eat, and what to see while you’re exploring Liberty Station with kids.

Liberty Station: Where to Eat

Over the last few years, Liberty Station gained a new set of restaurants. These new eateries are more unique than the original anchor tenants that helped launch the revamped historic neighborhood. Bringing in these San Diego distinct spots that appeal to visitors and locals alike has brought an influx of activity to the area. Here are our picks for the most family-friendly food spots that offer something you can't find anywhere else.

Liberty Public Market
Although the public market launched in 2016, it's recently added specialty vendors that brighten the halls. Picky eaters (and their parents) can officially rejoice. There are more than 30 food vendors that are willing and able to satisfy all palates. The best thing about a food emporium like Liberty Public Market is that everyone doesn’t have to order from the same spot. The market offers everything from lobster sandwiches to house-made pasta and even has a great selection of wine and cheese. We highly recommend finishing your meal with something sweet like a mini-donut or two. The outdoor seating area has plenty of space for kids to move around and burn off any sugar highs.

Officine Bueno Forchetta
Bueno Forchetta's flagship location in South Park is often hailed as the best pizza in town so it's no surprise that their Liberty Station opening was highly anticipated and welcomed. The Italian restaurant delivers, offering families their very own seating complete with a playground and secure space to romp while parents enjoy another slice of pie. The waitstaff is ultra Italian, and their accents might make you feel like you jetted off on a European vacation. There's even an actual Fiat convertible that’s been turned into a two-top (diners sit in the back seat) and it can be reserved for special occasions.

Go Go Amigo
Need a staycation? Snag a table at the newly opened Go Go Amigo. The south-of-the-border inspired restaurant and bar is bright, colorful and fun! Stone Brewing Company
Highlighted in our roundup of best San Diego restaurants to bring your toddler, Stone Brewing Company is the perfect spot to stop and eat while exploring Liberty Station. The expansive restaurant features indoor and outdoor dining and bars, as well as a bocce ball court, outdoor cinema space and garden. Their menu has a small kids offering including cheeseburgers, grill cheese and chicken strips. We'd suggest trying the Stone Mac and Cheese too. Adults will love the double crunch Korean fried chicken sandwich or the chicken tinga tacos; pair it with their tangerine express hazy IPA or the salt & lime lager for a twist. This spot is a great place to bring friends and family visiting from out of town.

U.S.S. Neversail
This naval ship, located in the South Point area of the neighborhood, earned its nickname of “U.S.S. Neversail” because it has never seen the open seas. An exact replica of what sailors could expect out on the ocean, the vessel remained on land for military training exercises.

Names of Military Heros
All of the streets at Liberty Station are named after military heroes. For instance, Truxtun Road, one of the main roads of Liberty Station, is named after Thomas Truxtun, one of the first six commanders appointed to the new U.S. Navy by President George Washington. Need a fun game? Walkthrough the station with phone in hand to google each military hero’s story as you go.
