Along with its gorgeous accommodations that feature signature amenities and Westin’s beloved Heavenly® Beds for parents (your kids won’t be the only ones sleeping like babies), your crew can swim in the outdoor pool or exhilarate your body in the Westin WORKOUT® fitness studio featuring Peloton bikes when you aren’t playing with Mickey and Minnie. Plenty of onsite eateries make feeding the family without having to go far a sinch! Options, including a steakhouse, Mexican restaurant and rooftop bar.

 Element Anaheim Resort Convention Center

This eco-friendly hotel features guest rooms that come with fully equipped kitchens, spa-inspired bathrooms, and of course Heavenly® Beds. Make sure to book one of their Kids Suites which offer bunk beds and a separate play area and TV for the little ones. Additional hotel perks include a heated outdoor pool for hours of water play along with an outdoor patio complete with seating and two barbecue grills.

Play

A trip to Anaheim wouldn’t be quite as magical without a trip to Disneyland! If you want a real insider tip take our advice, get up early and get to the park right before 8 a.m. when the fun begins. Disneyland features two amazing theme parks—Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. We suggest getting a multi-day ticket so you can make the most of your visit and hit both parks. Prices start at $76/day. Make sure to hit all the classic rides including Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones Adventure! And make sure the Star Wars fans in the family experience the brand-new Rise of the Resistance ride!

Disneyland isn’t the only activity Anaheim has to offer. While on vacation make sure to hit one of the beautiful nearby surfable beaches like Huntington State Beach where the kids can splash in the waves and play in the sand while parents surf. For a break from the sun, let your little ones get science-y at the DiscoveryCube OC, Anaheim's Hands-On Science Center. This massive building houses award-winning exhibits that kids can interact with. Your auto-fanatics can make their own race car in the physics lab and learn the science behind the sport while playing hockey. From exploring outer space to playing with dinos, there’s more to do at this massive science center than your family can possibly pack into one day…but give it a try. We dare you.

Eat

Annette Benedetti

Whether you spend your day on the beach, at the park or exploring the science center, one thing is guaranteed to occur: big appetites and hangry kiddos. Keeping everyone’s tummy full can feel like a full-time job when you are on a big family vacation, but it’s super easy while in Anaheim. Right outside the Westin’s front door, lies one of the best Mexican eateries in town, Puesto. Enjoy noshing on award-winning tacos, burritos, and ceviche. And don’t forget the margaritas for mom! This family-owned and operated restaurant serves up handmade tortillas and an innovative approach to traditional Mexican cuisine with California's fresh, local ingredients.

If you don’t want to leave your hotel to eat, or you are looking for an elevated dining experience, then you’ll want to check out Westin’s own restaurant Tangerine Room. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Tangerine Room has a continuously evolving seasonal menu that showcases local flavors. Enjoy signature dishes such as our SoCal benedict with cage-free eggs, burgers, sandwiches, quality steaks and so much more.

For dining experiences that get you out of your room and fill you up with the best bites the area has to offer, we suggest Poppy & Seed a local eatery that features spacious seating arranged both inside and out in a unique greenhouse setting. While the atmosphere is beautiful, the food is irresistible. This location is one of Orange County’s newest dining experiences created by the award-winning chef and restauranteur Chef Michael Reed. “Oh yeah, I’m turning 9 and that’s half way to 18,” my daughter teasingly said to me, in a sing song voice.

It was the night before her 9th birthday and I tend to make a big deal out of the last night as a, whatever age she is. When she was 1 years old, she received a book for her birthday called, “If I Could Keep you Little.” Every night on her birthday’s eve, she pulls it out and asks me to read it to her and thank goodness, she hasn’t grown out of it yet. She pulled out her book on this very momentous last night as an 8-year-old and cuddled up in my arms. As I squeezed her tight, I felt this familiar twinge of pain, mixed with the tiniest bit of panic!

I think it’s because adding a third child to the mix, permanently makes your family feel as if you are living on fast forward, but the last two years or so; I have really been aware of how fast time is going with my only daughter and wondering how to make it slow down.

Parenthood is a tricky thing. You spend so much time either wishing they would just get past a certain age (hello terrible two’s!) or a certain phase. Then in the next breath, you’re wishing you could just hold on to them longer and keep them little. I am in the throws of both phases at once, due to my kid’s ages.

My daughter is 9 and my sons are 2 and 4. So, I spend half my time wishing my boys would get just a tiny bit older. Old enough that we can all go to the movies. Old enough that my life doesn’t revolve around nap times and toddler meltdowns. Old enough that we can go out to dinner at a restaurant and sit down…and stay…and not feel like we could have just set our money on fire afterwards!

But then, here’s this not so little girl and it seems like just yesterday I was wishing she would get just a little bit older as well. Old enough to be potty trained. Old enough to sleep on her own. Old enough to not have such awful separation anxiety.

After all the wishing and waiting for a different season of motherhood, it suddenly seems, she is old enough now. We can go out to eat and chat like little best friends. We go on shopping sprees without the boys and order hot chocolate from Starbucks and spend way too long in Target. We wait till the boys fall asleep early and sneak downstairs with chocolate, to watch a Hallmark movie or a “big girl” show. I find myself feeling this sense of urgency at times, like I just don’t have enough time left with her. By the time her brother’s get “old enough,” she’s going to be a preteen and I’m going to be wishing the boys would just stop growing too!

We cannot stop this inevitable paradigm of parenthood. We inadvertently wish away so many seasons of their life and then once they are gone, we mourn that we can’t get them back. I have felt such a strong pull in the last year or two particularly, to make my time with my kids count, to go on the trip even if my 2-year-old freaks out the whole airplane ride and I need a vacation to recover from the vacation! To let them stay up late for movie nights and sleepovers, even though the Mombie in me is ready for Netflix and chill by 8 p.m. To let go of all my order and rules sometimes and let us eat dessert before dinner, even though I know I’ll pay for it later; when they’re bouncing off the walls at bed time!

I want to be intentional in the time I spend with my children. I want to make it a priority. I want to make sure that I don’t look back with regrets. They’re only this age once and before you know it, the moment is a memory. I want to store up as many as I possibly can of just being with my kids, being present in the moment…laughing, hugging, cuddling, reading, and being totally wrapped up in the joy that only motherhood can bring.

It won’t always be this way, Mama. Their independence will come and it cannot be stopped. So, relish the nights they cry out for you and the days they seem to always be underfoot; because the day our babies turn 18 will come faster than we can imagine and as sure as the sun will rise, they will grow old enough and we will miss this beautiful, life giving exhaustion we are going through right now.

It’s tough being a parent right now. Whether you’re working from home and trying to keep your kids entertained while their school is shut down or you’re trying to figure out childcare while continuing to work, you’re probably having some major struggles right now.

We’re used to having kids home during the summer, but what can you do with all of the unexpected downtime we’re facing? Many school districts have closed for at least the next month, and if you’re like most parents, you want to make sure your children are still learning. If you’ve never homeschooled before, that can be a daunting task.

Here are some tips for keeping your kids engaged with learning at home—even when they don’t have homework to do.

Kids Are Engaged When They Know the Benefits

Depending on the age of your children, you might be able to appeal to their sense of logic. There are lots of benefits of online learning, especially when you’re out of your normal routine. If they understand why they’re learning, they’re likely to be more engaged.

Getting kids to study isn’t necessarily easy when they don’t have to. But if you remind them that continuing to learn will help them gain skills and prepare for college or next year in the classroom, they may be more motivated to engage with learning, instead of just their phones.

Build Learning into a Daily Routine

Learning is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine that you follow with your family. It helps to provide some structure to days that can easily be wasted with activities that don’t provide any value beyond passing the time. Routines will help keep everyone’s spirits up and help the family feel productive.

It’s also important to remember that learning can mean more than math, science, and reading. This could be the perfect time to start teaching your kids the life skills they’ll need as they grow. Involving your children in doing laundry, meal preparation, and other household tasks can be a great way to incorporate learning.

Kids Love Games. So Why Not Blend Learning with Fun?

Let’s face it: Getting your kids to focus on formal schooling when they’re stuck at home all day isn’t always going to work. But when it comes to games, most kids will happily play for hours. You can lean into that enthusiasm by letting your kids play games that will help them learn and build skills.

One great example of this is the game Minecraft, which is owned by Microsoft. What started out as a building game has grown to so much more, with educational opportunities abound. Microsoft is helping families out during the pandemic by making Minecraft educational packs free for a limited time. Kids can visit the International Space Station and do experiments, learn to code, or explore Mouth Olympus and Greek myths in a multiplayer mode.

Give Kids the Freedom to Take Breaks & Get Fresh Air

The good news about the pandemic is that kids can still go outside and burn off some steam, even if they can’t play with other kids. It’s important for kids to take breaks, get some fresh air, and stay active. Staying physically active will help them to learn more effectively and focus better when they are indoors.

You can even take learning outside as a family. Learn about the insects in your backyard or stargaze if you can. Take educational walks. Learning about the natural world is a fun way to switch things up and engage kids.

Encourage Kids to Share & Study What They Want to Learn

The situation we’re in isn’t normal, and it might not be fair to make your kids work on math problems if they don’t want to. Instead, consider exploring subjects they’re enthusiastic about and explore new things together. It’s much easier to engage kids in learning if they’re passionate about the topic they’re exploring.

Get creative and share learning together. Try science experiments or arts and crafts that relate to the topics they’re learning about. Getting involved with their learning will encourage their curiosity and enthusiasm and bring you closer together.

Parents have a lot to deal with right now. But the good news is that you don’t have to put too much pressure on your child’s learning. Make it fun, and the learning will follow!

Food has become a central part of holiday celebrations, so much so that some holidays aren’t complete without the foods associated with them.  Think about it – there’s turkey and stuffing for Thanksgiving, of course.  For Halloween it may be candy corn (or just a lot of candy!), and Easter is filled with marshmallow peeps, jelly beans and chocolate bunnies. With Valentine’s Day approaching, there’s nothing more quintessential than chocolate. Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating LOVE and for centuries we’ve expressed our love through food.

How much do you really know about chocolate? Let’s start with its origin. Chocolate comes from the cacao bean that grows in pods on the cacao tree that is native to Central and South America and cultivated in many other locations around the equator. Chocolate is the most popular sweet treat in the world and we consume more than 3 million tons of cocoa beans per year. Now that’s a lot of chocolate!

But what is it about chocolate that elicits a passion that goes beyond the love of a sweet treat?  Why does it make us feel so darn good?  Many people report “feeling good” after indulging in chocolate, especially because it contains more than 300 chemicals that may account for those feelings.  Caffeine, a stimulant, is present in small amounts and combined with theobromine, a weaker stimulant also found in chocolate, may account for the “lift” experienced when eating it.  Believe it or not, there’s also some evidence that chocolate may stimulate the brain in the same way cannabis does and it may also have an effect on mood regulation through the stimulation of dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins.

Beyond creating a great mood, chocolate benefits our heart and brain, the trifecta of a Happy Valentine’s Day!  Dark chocolate in particular contains phytonutrients which work as antioxidants and other ingredients that may lower the risk of cognitive decline as we age.

Now that we know the why, let’s talk about the how. Sweet milk chocolate comes with a few ingredients that we want to limit such as fat, sugar, and calories but dark chocolate (more than 70% cocoa) contains flavanols that may benefit the brain and heart and contains much less sugar.  So go ahead and incorporate small amounts of dark chocolate into your family’s Valentine’s Day traditions! By using dark chocolate you can expand the palate with the taste of actual chocolate instead of the sugar rush of chocolate candy. Provide a fun experience for your kids such as drizzling dark chocolate over fresh fruit like bananas or drizzle over popcorn. A little dark chocolate over nutritious fruit or a whole grain snack will surely help your family feel the love this Valentine’s Day!
