After you’ve finished your turkey dinner, it’s time to find the perfect Christmas tree, Seattle families
When it comes to Thanksgiving traditions, some folks test their luck with the wishbone, some load up the car to see holiday lights in the city, and some head to a nearby Christmas tree farm to cut down a tree for the season. There are many places where Seattle families can find their annual tree at a local U-Cut Christmas tree farm. Some of our favorite area farms are totally decked for the season and offer holiday cheer that only comes once a year. Some have even invited Santa for pictures and cocoa. Get ready to make like a lumberjack. After all, these trees aren’t going to cut themselves down.

Honeytree Farm
This trip to the Christmas tree farm comes with a cup of hot cocoa adorned with a candy cane. Wander through the 11-acre field in search of your perfect U-cut tree, or choose from their pre-cut trees, if you're not quite up to the lumberjack challenge. The folks here are happy to shake your tree for free and bale it if you need them to for a small charge. Once you've found your tree and cut it down, stop by the Gift Shop for a wreath and raw honey.
Insider Tip: Santa usually visits this tree farm on the weekends, double check their Facebook page just to make sure before you tell the kids.
Good to Know: Honeytree Farm is a cyclical farm; they sell trees until they meet their quota for the year, which usually happens around the second week in December.
Established in 1982, located on a picturesque Issaquah hilltop and nestled on 40 acres, this family favorite has a vast array of beautiful U-cut and pre-cut Douglas, Grand, Noble, and Fraser Firs. Making the trip is way better than heading to a local hardware store to find the perfect tree. They feature complimentary hand saws and twine, assistance loading your tree into your vehicle, and free tree tie-downs. This is a pretty festive place to visit. There are two fire pits to warm up by, a 1955 fire engine is on-site for unique photo opportunities and they operate a full espresso bar and the food court with to-go items on the weekends.
Insider Tip:If you want to get a jump on things, head to Trinity Tree Farm for their pre-opening weekend on November 19 and 20.
Good to know: Trinity is a pooch-friendly farm. Please make sure to keep Fido on a leash and clean up after him.
In the Christmas tree-growing business since 1975, McMurtrey’s Red-Wood Christmas Tree Farm is doing things a bit differently this year. They have moved to a reservation system for U-Cut trees which will help avoid crowding and provide extra safety for guests. Reservations can be made online. Make your U-cut dreams come true when you cut down a tree here, with saws they provide. If you and your tree need a lift back to the bailer, just hop onto the wagon and go for a ride. If you’re not in the mood for a trek through the forest to find your Noble Fir, pre-cut trees are also available, from small tabletops trees to 15' trees; you do not need to make a reservation to pick one of those up. Fido can come too as long as he is on a leash.
Good to know: McMurtrey’s Red-Wood Christmas Tree Farm sells Noble, Nordmann, Douglas and Fraser Firs. U-cut trees usually sell out quickly, but the farm brings in beautiful pre-cut trees weekly, so you're guaranteed a fresh one. The farm will sell some of them for the same price as the U-cut trees and fresh-cut Douglas firs to 7.5' are priced lower than their U-cuts. Extra tall trees are available with local delivery referrals upon request.

Enchanted Winds Tree Farm
The Ulrich family bought their farm in 1954, planted their first Christmas tree in the early '80s, and opened to the public in 1988. Located in the Cascade foothills near Issaquah, Enchanted Winds Tree Farm invites your family to go on an adventure hunting down the perfect tree (with advice from their expert crew). Choose from Noble, Grand, Douglas, Fraser or Turkish Fir varieties. You'll be given a saw and a kneepad. Once found, they will shake, square cut and tie down your tree securely. Then, warm up in the festive barn with a cup of complimentary hot cider. Check out the selection of gifts, ornaments, and handmade wreaths before you head home.
Pfaff's Christmas Tree Farm just might offer the largest selection of trees around! On their farm, you'll find the following firs: Douglas, Turkish, Noble, Nordman, Grand, Corkbark, White, Korean, Blue Spruce, Sequoia, Fraser, and Shasta. Don't know which one is right for your fam? Their website will help you choose and offer some helpful hints on how to keep it alive, too. If cutting your own tree is not your thing, they also offer a bunch of pre-cut trees as well. Before you leave, be sure to exit through the gift shop.
Holiday Hint: The crowds here are much smaller during the week, but on the weekend you can share a cup of coffee or cider with Santa.
You have to give Buttonwood Farm props for being the only tree farm on our list that has their own theme song, and a funky website that features videos offering seasonal tips, recipes, and even goofy music videos. As for the farm, prepare to chop down 100% organic trees available in Douglas, Turkish, Nordman, Noble, Grand, Fraser, and Blue Spruce varieties. Located in Redmond, Buttonwood is open by appointment only and their trees go quickly. They also usually open earlier than anyone else. In addition to offering U-Cut services, they will even deliver your perfect tree if you prefer. It doesn't get any easier than that.
Hunter Farms makes no bones about it. They have been growing Christmas trees since 1948 "in the heart of the Christmas tree capital of the U.S." They offer sheared and un-sheared trees with sizes that range from table-top to 20 feet. All of them are grown at their U-cut lot farm in the hills on the Olympic Peninsula, but they also offer two other convenient locations featuring a mix of fresh, pre-cut trees in Seattle. You'll always find fresh, handmade wreaths at the General Store and the tree lot in Wedgewood.
Insider Tip: Don't want to chop down a tree? Visit their Wedgewood Tree Lot (7744 35th Ave. N.E.) in Seattle instead.
Good to know: If you want the adventures of cutting down your own tree, visit the farm in Union, WA and don't forget to bring your saw or you'll have to haul the tree—roots and all—like the Griswolds.
Of course, you want the best and prettiest Christmas tree this side of the North Pole, but the Littles just want to run through the trees, stomp in the mud puddles, and—wait, did someone say train? A one-mile train track runs through Crystal Creek Farm’s picturesque 23-acre farm. This was an 18-year project in the making, and you can experience a ride for $5 per person. In addition, the farm’s train coach flat car, as well as a kiln cart from 1895, will be ready for kids to climb on and push along the tracks, a perfect setting for your holiday family photo. The farm also provides saws, twine, and helpful staff to help you get your perfect tree home safely.
Good to know: Crystal Creek owners Harvey and Janet Hawken have been growing gorgeous Noble and Nordmann (Turkish) Firs for over 25 years and Harvey hand-trims all the trees himself. Harvey tells us the Turkish firs hold their needles 'til Easter—one less thing to clean up on Christmas morning.
With 70 acres of land and over 40,000 Christmas trees to choose from (including Korean, Turkish, Noble, Douglas, Grand, Fraser, White Pine, and Blue Spruce) you better have a good excuse if you can't find your perfect tree here. As things are returning to normal at Coates Christmas Trees this year, one tradition is still going strong–visits with Santa! You can warm up with hot cider and cocoa after your visit. Coates is dog-friendly too as long as they are leashed up and poop bags are at the ready.
Insider Tip: Santa himself will be on the farm to greet kids and take photos on November 25-27 and Dec. 3-4 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
With a name like Christmas Creek, how can you go wrong? This tree farm offers a variety of five- to 14-foot trees tucked into an idyllic Cascade Mountain and Snoqualmie River setting. They sell Noble, Nordmann, Grand, and Douglas Firs, and you can view all of the farm's tree varieties online. What else will you find at this farm? Quality pre-cut trees, wreaths, and garland so you can make your whole house festive. After finding the perfect tree, make your way to the cozy log cabin, complete with a roaring fireplace that makes an ideal setting for family holiday pictures. You can also warm up with a cup of hot apple cider or coffee and chomp on some delicious finds straight from the North Bend Bakery.
The Carnation Tree Farm land has been in owner Roger Thorson’s Norwegian family for over 100 years, and his pride shows in the beautifully restored Hjertoos House and barn located on his picturesque 24-acre farm. The farm is awash with beautiful trees, including Douglas, Grand, Nordmann, Fraser and Noble Firs and Norway and Blue Spruces up to 12 feet (with a few 30-footers in the bunch!). All varieties are available for cutting, or take home a pre-cut tree and some garland, mistletoe, or a wreath to round out your holiday decorating. Hint: They have tree stands too.
Good to know: For your convenience, the Carnation Tree Farm provides free on-site parking, twine, tree shaking, and baling plus tree recycling with every Christmas tree purchase. You'll find all you need to know about this year's trees and prices on their website.
Have you ever gone to a tree lot and wondered if they had any other "better" trees in the back? At Farmer Browns, you can drive through the entire 32-acre farm to find the best tree out there. You will be handed a saw upon arrival and instructions to drive until you see your perfect tree. Christmas music plays festively while you wander through the fields and once tree nirvana is obtained, a short jaunt to the cashier reveals that there’s no need to worry about breaking the bank, because all trees, with the exception of a small area behind the house (we KNEW there was a place!) are the same reasonable price. The catch? You won’t know what that is until you get there. "U-cut, u-dig, u-enjoy," they like to say. The staff will happily bail your tree and help you attach it to your car. Then you can park in their large lot and enjoy complimentary cider and hot chocolate and a bonfire for warming those chilly feet of yours.
Good to know: The farm has Douglas, Nobel, and Grand Fir trees, as well as Colorado Blue and Norway Spruces and Fraser Fir trees. All trees are hand-pruned and sheared to shape.

Stocker Farms
Stocker Farms is a Seattle family favorite during the holidays, starting at Halloween and running straight through to Christmas, because of their friendly, helpful staff. Their Fraser, Grand, and Douglas Fir trees (ranging in height from 5-9 feet) are usually ready for you to pick and cut starting the day after Thanksgiving. Stocker Farms will provide the saws, twine, and help with loading the tree onto your car along with lots of holiday cheer, including a roaring fire to warm little fingers and toes. Hot chocolate will be available for purchase. Other items such as wreaths, jams, and gifts are on sale too. Sorry, no pooches please. Just look for the Big Red Barn off Highway 9.
Good to know: Stocker Farms has hundreds of pre-cut trees from 4-12 feet including Fraser, Grand and Douglas Firs as well as Noble and Nordmann Firs. Stocker Farms will also shake and bale your tree for free.
Have you ever been on a hike somewhere in the beautiful Northwest and spied a conifer that you thought would make the perfect Christmas tree? It’s your lucky day, outdoorsy parent, because during the holiday season, you can trek into your local wilderness to find that tree! The U.S. Forest Service sells permits to cut down a tree in designated locations (maps provided when you buy the permit). They offer a lot of tips too! We suggest the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest for the closest drive to find your perfect pine. Permits can be purchased online and at numerous Ranger Stations.
Good to know: Permits are good for one tree, with a tree height limit of 15 feet. Depending on where you decide to go, prepare to pay for a parking permit in Sno-Park lots. If you have a fourth grader, you might be able to get your forest pass for free. Happy hunting!
The holiday season will be here before we know it, and it’s pretty much a given we’ll be frantically trying to pull together holiday pictures in time to get those cards in the mail. Good news—we’ve gathered the most creative family photo ideas out there, and all of them can be recreated with ease! Gone are the cheesy grins and fake smiles, these family holiday photo ideas will put everyone at ease and make the process much less stressful.

This pumpkin decoration from Target is not child-friendly
If you’re doing any shopping for Halloween decorations at Target, you might want to watch this video first. A mom picked up what looked like a super cute, innocent singing pumpkin decoration. But once she got it home and set it up, she realized that the lyrics it sings are a little bit, um, questionable.
In a viral TikTok video posted by a mom named Brooke, the pumpkin can be heard singing its song while her young daughter is playing nearby.
“This singing pumpkin had plans we didn’t need to hear,” she wrote over the video.
In the background, you can hear the pumpkin singing lines like, “I’ll be wicked for one night,” “til morning it will just be us,” “spoil you with my roasted pumpkin seeds,” and, “How would you like to scream all night?”
Brooke walks over to it with the camera to show that it’s pretty innocent looking—just a regular, orange pumpkin with an LED face that makes it look like it’s singing.
“This is very inappropriate,” she says as she spins it around to find the volume control. She turns it all the way down, saying, “I don’t know. We bought it from Target. We’ll let him just lip-sync.”
It’s definitely a head-scratcher. Maybe it’s supposed to be funny? But the joke falls pretty flat since Halloween is definitely a family holiday (even though most of those jokes would go right over kids’ heads like they seemed to go over Brooke’s daughter’s). Either way, it’s a good warning to test out decorations in the store before you take them home. While most of Target’s Halloween finds are great, this one can probably be left on the shelf.
This year, around 175 million Americans will celebrate Halloween. On a Tuesday. As a parent of two children, I can tell you that a weekday Halloween is very tough for families with young kids. As a CEO in the celebrations industry, I can also tell you that when October 31 falls on a weeknight, fewer people celebrate the holiday.
Sometimes I like to ask obvious questions and challenge the way things are done. When people say, “That’s the way we’ve always done it,” I perk up and question their assumptions. I want to know “Is there a better way?” and “Will more people be served with a different solution?”
When it comes to Halloween, I believe there is a better way. The time is long overdue for a cultural change that will benefit society: the official observance of Halloween should be on the last Saturday of October.
Why does Halloween have to be on the 31st of every year? There are many other holidays that aren’t tied to a specific date. Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November. The same is true for Memorial Day (the last Monday in May) and Labor Day (the first Monday in September).
Halloween is mostly a kids’ and family holiday, and it should fall on a day that is best for kids and families! Not convinced about #SaturdayHalloween? Here are five reasons Halloween should be observed on the last Saturday of October.
It’s healthier for kids (and parents)
Halloween is arguably the most kid-focused holiday of the entire year, and we observe it on a school night eight out of every 10 years. Who wants to get home from work, stress about dinner, try to wrangle kids into costumes, and then be out trick-or-treating way past normal bedtime? It’s all too chaotic for most families.
The next day is a mess, too. Kids wake up the next morning overtired, and parents drag themselves to work. When Halloween is observed on a Saturday, not only will it be better for kids, but it will also be better for the sanity of parents.
It’s better for schools and teachers
When October 31 falls on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, students lose not just one, but two days of productivity. Halloween itself is full of distractions, but the next day is even more challenging.
Teachers have to manage a classroom of kids who have been out all night trick-or-treating and eating candy for lunch. The combination of lack of sleep and dealing with sugar-infused children is difficult. Halloween on a Saturday solves all of this. Plus, schools can schedule their Halloween parades and events on a Friday afternoon, which will help teachers better manage their class schedules. Saturday Halloween is the right thing to do for schools and teachers.
It’s safer
Halloween is a family holiday. Its most important cultural ritual is trick-or-treating. In my own neighborhood in Massachusetts, hundreds of families flock to the most popular streets downtown that are full of cars returning home from work.
If we observe Halloween on a Saturday, trick-or-treating could begin earlier in the evening before nightfall. Local authorities could block roads to protect the busiest neighborhoods. Accidents and fatalities would be reduced. It’s time we reduce possible danger and celebrate Halloween on a Saturday.
Families can celebrate together
The majority of parents work outside the home, and a weekday Halloween makes it difficult for families to celebrate together. A weekend holiday would suit working families and enable celebrations for the whole family. Extended family could gather as they do for other major holidays, and special memories can be made.
At Punchbowl, we have the data: there are more Halloween parties on Saturday than on any other day of the week. Let’s enable even more get-togethers and family celebrations on this important, memorable holiday.
When Halloween falls on a Saturday, it generates more revenue for the economy than weekday Halloweens. More costumes are purchased, more parties are planned, and more food and beverages are consumed. This means more jobs and higher wages, too.
Party City reported $22 million less in sales when comparing 2016 (a Saturday Halloween) to 2017 (a Monday Halloween). The impact extends to local businesses as well. If we move the official observance of Halloween to the last Saturday of October, it would not only bolster local business, but it would also provide predictability from year to year.
There are many more reasons that Halloween should be moved to the last Saturday in October and very few we should continue the old tradition of October 31. The time has come to move our national celebration of Halloween.

This 5 star resort in Riviera Maya offers upscale dining, babysitting services, and a new all-inclusive option
The last time we visited this property was in 2017, and we’re happy to report that now more than ever before, it’s worth the visit. The Fairmont Mayakoba underwent a serious makeover that was completed in 2022 and it now has a sleek new beach club, two more restaurants, an adults-only bar overlooking the ocean, two beautiful kids clubs, and freshly redesigned rooms and suites, too.
Most notably, it also now includes an all-inclusive option and free dining for children under 5. We went to test if all-inclusive and luxury could actually co-exist for a family, and we’re here to confirm the answer is undeniable: Yes.
This year for spring break, Tinybeans sent its Chief Business Officer, Anne Hatfield, along with her husband, 4-year-old daughter, and 2-year-old son, to confirm if this resort still had everything needed to make a memorable family holiday. Here’s Anne’s first-hand experience of everything she loved about her family’s stay at Fairmont Mayakoba.
Fairmont Mayakoba is hidden in 240 acres of tropical forest, marked by crystal clear waterways and cobbled roads suitable only for walking, bikes, and golf carts. The setting in nature makes it hard to believe you’re only 40 minutes south of Cancun. It feels remote, exclusive, and quiet in the ways you want it to be quiet when you’re on vacation. We took naps on the beach during the afternoons and slept like babies at night.
The Food at Fairmont Mayakoba
The food wasn’t your average all-inclusive fair. It was fresh-caught seafood, beautiful cuts of steak, and the most bright, delicious fruit we could imagine. The cocktails were well-crafted and delicious, and we particularly enjoyed trying the Mexican wine on offer at both Tauro, the steak restaurant, and Ki, the Korean BBQ. For the record, the steak restaurant is Hawksmoor or old-school Smith & Wollensky levels of good.
Ki, the Korean BBQ restaurant, isn’t included in the all-inclusive plan, but it’s definitely worth the added price. We used guest services to organize two babysitters to stay in the room with our two children, and we enjoyed an amazing mom-and-dad night out. The babysitters were two staff members we had met at the Kids Club and breakfast restaurant so we left the kids feeling confident they were in good hands, and they were. The cost of the babysitter service was 400 pesos per hour per sitter, which equals about $22 per sitter per hour. Being able to go away on vacation and still sneak in our weekly Thursday night date night made the cost worth it. The food at Ki was full of beautiful flavor, and cooking your own meat while overlooking the Caribbean ocean and with your feet in the sand is hard to beat.
Getting Around Fairmont Mayakoba
Golf carts are the main mode of transportation around Fairmont Mayakoba, which made for lots of fun, and also made you appreciate the grandness of the property. It truly feels like neverending miles of jungle tucked away alongside the Caribbean Ocean. It’s a 3-5 minute ride from the main rooms of the hotel to the beach, which makes even the journey to the beach an adventure.
Kids Clubs at the Fairmont Mayakoba
Speaking of adventure, there are two kids clubs—one near the main pool area, and the other by the Beach Club. Both were beautifully designed, very comfortable, and felt like Montessori-meets-vacation spaces of wonder, and fun. Our 5-year-old daughter enjoyed visiting both clubs daily for an hour or two of arts and crafts.
Besides the kids club activities, there were also two small baby pools where we hung out most days and to our surprise, there was only one other family ever playing around in the pool with us. Next to the baby pools is another pool with a water slide, which was well-loved by the tweens. The layout of the pool area makes it so you can enjoy whatever mood you’re looking to enjoy, without interruption. The adults-only pool is a nice spot to enjoy a quiet read with a margarita, and some chips and guac.
Speaking of a margarita, the Mexican food at the newly designed La Laguna restaurant with seating over the lagoon is heavenly. You can also order La Laguna food directly to your chairs poolside, which made eating lunch with two young ones easy, yet never compromising on quality and taste. Our favorite poolside meal? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Fish tacos for the adults, and quesadillas dipped into a bowl of black bean puree for the kids.
Throughout the course of our 1-week stay, we truly had not a single complaint. Our son even had a bad fall where he cut open his forehead, and the on-site doctor is knowledgeable, lovely, and professional. Could it get any better? Great service, great food, great medical care, and great memories? We don’t think so.
As we were leaving, we saw another family who we met during our stay. We smiled in agreement when I said confidently “I think we are a Fairmont Mayakoba family now. See you next year?” We hope every spring break was as special as this one.

The best holiday events taking place in San Francisco, the Bay Area, and beyond
Santa’s not the only one with a list this year—we’ve made our own nice list, full of our favorite family holiday activities around the Bay Area for the 2022. And while we may be missing snow and ice in the Bay Area (although you can get your fill of nearby snow play if you know where to look), we’re ready to celebrate with fun holiday events nearby, many of them free! This year, return to beloved traditions, like seeing a performance of The Velveteen Rabbit, or strolling down brightly-decorated Christmas Tree Lane with a hot chocolate in hand (see if your favorite hot chocolate spot made our list of best hot cocoa in the Bay Area). 4. Presidio Christmas Tree Lighting
Dec. 2: Since 1991, the now 55-foot-tall Norfolk Island pine in the Presidio has glowed with lights starting on the first Friday evening in December. The tradition of tree lighting at the former US Army base began even earlier, in 1957, when families who lived and worked in the Presidio came by to light the tree and kick off the holiday season. Holiday Lights continued when the Presidio opened its gates to all as a national park 27 years ago. Event details.
5. Civic Center Tree Lighting
Dec. 7: The annual Civic Center Plaza Tree Lighting event returns December 7, 4-7pm! Add this fun, free, family-friendly event to your holiday calendar! Featuring festive holiday performances, food, music, a toy giveaway for children, and Makers Village DIY activities for kids and adults, you won’t want to miss it! The event takes place across from an illuminated City Hall in Civic Center Plaza, a wonderful backdrop for a photo. 7. Holiday Afternoon Tea
Dec. 17 & 18: Dollie & Me Tea at the Westin St. Francis at Union Square introduces a whimsical and magical holiday afternoon tea party for young children and their dolls.Event details.
Weekends Starting Nov. 19-Dec. 19: Journey to this one-of-a-kind immersive adventure into Victorian London—an elaborate holiday party with hundreds of costumed players performing and interacting with patrons in over 140,000 square feet of theatrically-lit music halls, pubs, dance floors, and festive shops. Early Dec.-New Year: The best-lit neighborhood in the Bay is in Alameda, on the 3200 block of Thompson Ave. Every year, the street puts on a dazzling display that plugs directly into the spirit of the season. Affectionately known as Christmas Tree Lane, this has been an annual tradition since 1938. Event details.

20. Mill Valley Winterfest
Nov. 26-Dec. 16: Winterfest is back for 2022 with a giant rainbow slide, a jump house, games, and of course, Santa. The festivities kick off Friday, Nov. 26th with the Winterfest Holiday Hunt, a three-week, scavenger hunt-style contest at more than 30 businesses throughout Mill Valley. The contest centers around Blue Stars, which business owners will place in storefront windows or inside their businesses. Kids accompanied by a parent will take photos of blue stars of at least eight participating businesses and will be entered in a raffle for one of 20 $40 gift cards to participating businesses. 21. Sausalito Lighted Boat Parade & Fireworks
Dec. 10: Watch a magical parade of lighted boats float by the Sausalito waterfront in this free annual event. Come for the festive flotilla, but stay for the fireworks, which start once all the boats have begun their journey. Parking can be tricky, so consider public transport, and get there early for a good spot. Event details.

After a couple of quiet years, Seattle is buzzing again this holiday season with returning and new favorite holiday events to explore. In fact, with so many things to do in downtown Seattle, you and the kids don’t need to go anywhere else to find (or spread) winter cheer. Our list (don’t worry, we checked it twice) includes everything from Santa sightings and steamy cups of hot cocoa paired with carolers to festive music, dancing nutcrackers, and a lot more. So get out your calendar, it’s time to schedule the Seattle Christmas events you really want to make time for this season.
Seattle holiday events you won’t want to miss
Kringle's Filling Station
Kringle's Filling Station
Part arcade, part neighborhood hangout, Kringle's Filling Station is perfect for families with older children. This pop-up event has set up shop along Aurora Ave. at an old gas station. Legend has it that the Kringle Family has come to offer hot chocolate out of the old gas tanks (don't worry, it's completely safe and sanitary!), let guests play unlimited rounds of "Ski-Ball", play "Reindeer Games" or sing holiday karaoke. You even have exclusive access to the Kringles' private office. Add-ons include the brand-new Speedway Slot Cars and photo booth aboard Santa's new-and-improved sleigh (you'll have to see it to believe it).
Insider Tip: Santa's scheduled to visit the Filling Station December 1, 9, 16 and 22. And Krampus will be making an appearance on December 20 and 21.
Good to Know: Be sure to order your tickets online to reserve your time.
We are beyond thrilled to see that the annual Gingerbread Village is back at the Sheraton Grand Seattle this year. If you've never been or if it has been a while, this really is a must-see event. Now in its 28th year, the event matches Seattle's top architecture firms, master builders, and the Sheraton Grand Seattle's culinary teams to create amazing works of edible art. This year's theme is focusing on Buzz Lightyear, but don't be surprised if a few other Toy Story characters show up too. Some of the gingerbread creations have great names like "Courage Against Zurg," "The Future is Bright," and of course, "To Infinity and Beyond!" While the exhibit is free, donations will be gladly accepted to go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDRF).

Seattle Center is doing it up for the holidays starting the day after Thanksgiving and running through the New Year. If you're looking for free and affordable holiday activities and entertainment, head to the heart of the city. Kids can marvel as a miniature locomotive makes it way through a turn-of-the-century village inside the Armory and complete a scavenger hunt while they're at it (you'll find sheets at the train station). Follow it up with a weekend ice sculpting demonstration or a live performance at the Armory (hint: we're looking forward to the School of Rock Seattle performance on December 10, SANCA's youth performers on December 17, and the KlezKids performance on the 24th) before grabbing something tasty for dinner. Wander through the Campus Luminata light display and end at the International Fountain where things are always hopping before heading home.
Holiday highlight: Take a trip to the top of the Space Needle to grab a picture with jolly old St. Nick in his glass sleigh. Seeing the city's Christmas lights below are totally worth the trip. As for New Year's Eve, plan an evening of music at Seattle Center, or if your kids won't last that long, plan to spend the day at the Seattle Children's Museum for their Winter Market Event featuring a "Noon Year's Eve" pj party and a sock skating rink.
While you're at Seattle Center, be sure to swing into Chihuly Garden and Glass to see Winter Brilliance. The display features over 700 hand-blown glass sculptures and combines glass art, video projection technology, and music for a full-sensory experience. One of the newest Seattle Christmas events, it celebrates the magic of the season in a whole new way. Catch the show in Gallery 1 into the new year when you visit.
With lavish sets and costumes designed by Ian Falconer (of Olivia fame) and the ever-mesmerizing choreography of Balanchine, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker is a forever favorite for many Seattle families. This full-length show is best suited for school-aged kids, but theatergoers of all ages will be glued to their seats for the entire two-plus hour show, basking in the care and craftsmanship of this delightful production. The 40-foot-tall Christmas tree, snow flurries on stage and Mother Ginger’s magical skirt (it weighs more than 60 pounds!) are all part of what makes this production one of the best around.
Insider Tip: A sensory-friendly performance is scheduled for December 21 at 2 p.m.
Another theater production you won't want to miss is SCT's latest. Even the tiniest theater lovers will be able to enjoy this holiday show, starring their favorite clumsy Bear, Paddington. With his telltale red hat and blue coat, they’ll fall for Paddington’s innocent antics as he works to save Christmas from being a total disaster. It all starts out simply enough—with Paddington and Mrs. Bird making the holiday marmalade (for Paddington’s sandwiches, of course). But oops!—they’ve run out of sugar. A trip to borrow some from grumpy neighbor, Mr. Curry, turns into more than Paddington bargained for when he agrees to help out with household chores in exchange. Things sort of snowball from there, leaving poor Paddington to fix it all before December 25. The show runs for 70 minutes with no intermission.
Insider Tip: There is a sensory-friendly performance scheduled for Dec. 11 at 11 a.m.

Seattle Children's Theatre 201 Thomas St. Seattle Event details
Ride the monorail from Seattle Center to Westlake Park to take advantage of this larger-than-life holiday display that features over 80,000 lights. All season long, enjoy memory-making moments with Holiday Lights & Delights and enjoy free, family-friendly activities at Westlake Park and Occidental Square each weekend. Don't forget your phones! In addition, enjoy live music by local artists on Fridays (Dec. 9 & 16) from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. at Westlake Park. This is where you'll also find Family Fun featuring crafts, characters, and snow flurries on Saturday, December 10 and 17. Or you can head on over to Pioneer Square on the same days to hear live carolers while sipping free cocoa and munching on cookies from noon-3 p.m.
For one weekend only, families can enjoy this pop-up ice skating rink in downtown Seattle. Free for everyone, the ice rink will be filled with skaters of all ages and abilities. If you’ve got your own skates, bring them along. If not, they’ll have skates on hand to borrow. Just remember to bundle up—this rink is totally outside.
Big bears, lil’ bears, brown bears, white bears! This beary special holiday event is a must-see for kids of all ages. Located inside the elegant Fairmont Olympic Hotel, the Teddy Bear Suite is exactly that and so much more. See teddy bears galore along with beautiful holiday decorations and Christmas trees. The Teddy Bear Suite is also the perfect spot to grab a holiday photo of the kids (think: cute, cuddly holiday cards) or chillax and enjoy a teddy bear-themed book. Psst! After visiting the Teddy Bear Suite on the second floor, stop by the lower lobby to check out the hotel's magnificent gingerbread display made out of 4,000 real gingerbread bricks.

Did you know that when Santa isn’t supervising elves and delivering toys, he's scuba diving? Come see for yourself when he dives in the Seattle Aquarium’s Window on Washington Waters exhibit this holiday season. While you're there, enjoy live holiday music, story times with Santa, marine mammal meet and greets, and more. Santa and pals will be taking to the water on three different dates this year. Catch him at noon or 3 p.m. on December 17 and 18 or at noon on Christmas Eve.
Urban Craft Uprising at South Lake Union Winter Market
Families can shop 'til they drop at Urban Craft Uprising's annual outdoor winter show, held outside the Nitro Building in South Lake Union. It's the easy way to shop small and local this holiday season. The event is free and family-friendly, and it will feature different vendors on different days, so you can go twice to see all the goodies.
