This may be true every year, but this time, we mean it: 2024 is THE year of the sequel. It appears nearly every film-favorite character—from Michael Keaton’s nostalgic bio-exorcist to Jack Black’s kung fu-fighting panda, to Disney’s Kings of the Pride Lands—is furthering their storyline on the big screen. No bother to us, though—we are here for it!

Ahead, we break down the new family movies in 2024 that you and your littles can enjoy together. They start early next year and continue through the ball drop, so no matter when the kids utter those dreaded two words, “We’re bored,” there’s a family-friendly title just waiting to whisk them away to another time and place. Spanish director Pablo Berger's Robot Dreams was a surprise nominee at this year's Oscars. It lost the best-animated film award to The Boy and the Heron, but that doesn't make it any less magical. About a city pup who orders a companion robot to stave off loneliness, the '80s-set musical has little dialogue but oodles of charm. It's one of those viewing experiences that will entertain all the eyeballs in the room, but go a step further with the adults and have them crying buckets.

WALL-E
Although this winning Pixar adventure is thoroughly charming and, yes, romantic, the youngest viewers may get a little restless during WALL-E's atmospheric, virtually dialogue-free first half-hour. They'll still enjoy it, but—unlike older kids and grown-ups—they won't be that impressed by how much is said with so few words. But the action (which includes some robot fights, weapons being fired, explosions, and chase scenes) picks up soon enough. Underlying the whole thing are strong environmental messages: Reduce, reuse, recycle, and think about what you're doing to the planet (and yourself).

Island of Lemurs Madagascar is an Earth Day Movie

Island of Lemurs: Madagascar
This is a 40-minute IMAX film about the unique biodiversity of the island of Madagascar, particularly the lemurs. Although there are references to certain lemurs being endangered, there's no violence—except some potentially threatening wildfires—to scare off younger viewers. Despite the brevity of the documentary, audiences of all ages will learn a great deal about lemurs and their importance to Madagascar and the world. This is a great family-friendly nature film to see while at a museum or any theater with an IMAX screen.

Dr Seuss: The Lorax
This 1970s animated version of the iconic Dr. Seuss book tells a timeless story of humanity's relationship with the land, water, air, and animals that will appeal to kids. There are instances of cartoonish violence as the Truffula Trees are chopped down—Seussian machines abound—but the lesson imparted by the Lorax as he speaks for the trees and all of nature should spark positive discussions on what can be done to protect our planet.

Schoolhouse Rock! Earth is a good Earth Day movie for kids

School House Rock! Earth
Parents need to know that heavy issues, such as our oceans being poisoned, our planet in peril, and our weather patterns spiraling out of control, might weigh on sensitive minds. But such is the state of our planet that our children are inheriting, sadly. On the other hand, great practical ideas and catchy tunes make this DVD an important educational tool, encouraging families to make changes in their homes to reduce the impact on the environment.

Arctic Tale is an Earth Day movie for kids

Arctic Tale
Though this film is basically kid-friendly and introduces kids to the idea of environmentalism with a light, engaging touch, there are parts that may be disturbing, especially for kids six and under. For example, a male polar bear nearly captures (and eats) one of the cuddly baby bears with which viewers may identify. In another scene, while trying to save Seela the walrus from a predator, her sweet "aunt" dies and her carcass is eaten in full view.

Bears
Parents need to know that the wildlife documentary Bears is family-friendly overall, but a few moments/scenes might be too tense and potentially scary for preschool-aged viewers. None of the animals die, but there are several scenes in which the lives of the mother bear and her cubs are in danger, and in one it seems like a cub has been eaten by an adult male bear. Other threats include predator males, a gray wolf, and the environment itself—all providing for dramatic sequences. Children who can get past that part of the movie will learn a good bit about the brown bears of Alaska and get a close-up look at how mama bears treat their cubs.

Disneynature Earth is a good Earth Day movie

Earth
This stunning nature documentary portrays how animals around the world are born, live, and, yes, die. Although there aren't any grisly shots of predators ripping apart their prey, there are disturbing scenes in which animals are chased and attacked. In a few cases, the predators win; you see them grip their catch with their teeth, but then the scene quickly changes. Other than those possibly upsetting scenes—plus another in which an animal dies of starvation and exhaustion—the film is appropriate (and educational) for kids of all ages. It's worth noting that the movie uses footage from the acclaimed TV series Planet Earth, so if you've seen that, you've seen the images included here.

March of the Penguins
This popular documentary includes stunning but also occasionally disturbing imagery of penguins walking, mating, and dying. Morgan Freeman narrates as the penguins make their annual march from the Antarctic shore in Antarctica. Some penguins die along the way, and others freeze during the long winter as they huddle to protect pregnant females and then eggs and babies, and still, others are killed by predators.

To the Arctic is a good Earth Day Movie

To the Arctic
To the Arctic is an educational 3-D nature documentary about the animals that thrive in the world's harshest climate. Filmed in IMAX, the movie puts a special emphasis on polar bears and the plight they face as global warming continues to extend the arctic summer season. There's nothing objectionable in the documentary, but some very young kids might be disturbed by the tense scenes when a male polar bear pursues a mother and her cubs or when the white cubs get bloody from eating freshly hunted seal meat. The narrator also explains that some cubs and caribou newborns have died because of the elements or starvation. Since the documentary is only 45 minutes long, it's just the right length to educate and entertain kids about life in the arctic's frozen world.

Warner Bros.

Based on the 1963 classic children's book written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak (the same one you read with a flashlight under the covers as a kid), this fantasy creature feature tags along with a little boy named Max as he trades the comforts of home for an island an ocean away where the Wild Things play. "The Secret Garden"

The Secret Garden is one of the best fantasy movies for kids
Warner Bros.

The 1993 adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's same-name novel stars Maggie Smith alongside Kate Maberly for a lovely and rewarding film we imagine would make Burnett proud. The story begins with Mary Lennox (Maberly), an orphan, being sent to live in a mansion in England with a cold housekeeper (Smith). To occupy her time, she befriends a bedridden boy and explores a secret garden. If the enchantment doesn't win over hearts, the themes of empathy, love, and kindness will.

Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke make this Walt Disney classic jump off the screen as the magical Mary Poppins and the oh-so-charming Bert. Together, they whisk two children, who have been a bit neglected by their parents, away on a string of whimsical adventures–their sunny dispositions and joyful tunes infectious from the very first note. If ever there was a film that could inspire a sense of wonder in kid viewers and wake up the dormant spark in the older ones, it's this timeless gem.

"The Wizard of Oz"

The Wizard of Oz is one of the best fantasy movies for families
Warner Bros.

No one is too old or too young for a trip down the yellow brick road. As captivating, entertaining, and, well, bizarre today as it was upon first viewing, this musical fantasy just gets better with age. Based on the novel by L. Frank Baum, the tale unfolds with protagonist Dorothy getting dropped by a twister in the middle of a Technicolor dream. From there, the story offers some of the most timeless tunes, iconic characters, and valuable lessons about self-discovery.

"The Neverending Story"

The Neverending Story is one of the best fantasy movies of all time.
Warner Bros.

A story within a story, this '80s classic begins with a kid who retreats to the attic of his school to get lost in a book about a fantasy land called Fantasia. Inhabited by wondrous creatures like Nighthobs, Nothings, Luckdragons, and Rockbiters, this other-world casts a spell on its reader, requiring the reader's interaction to save the characters in the book. But the best part of TNS is that it has cross-generational appeal. Parents who grew up with Atreyu and Falkor can now share them with their kids.

"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"

Paramount Pictures

Any classic adapted from a Roald Dahl tale will do when you want a good fantasy to enjoy with your family: The BFG, The Witches, Matilda. But nothing beats Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Especially if you pair the 1971 film about a poor boy whose luck changes when he finds one of five golden tickets with a spread of whipples, fudgemallows, and everlasting gobstoppers. Plus, there's no time like the present to introduce your little ones to the zany genius that is the late Gene Wilder.

Love makes people do crazy things. For Tristain, the hopeless romantic at the center of this Neil Gaiman fantasy, this translates to venturing into a neighboring magical realm to retrieve a fallen star for his true love. Brimming with star power—Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Claire Daines—Stardust was a bit of a sleeper hit when it was released in August 2007 and has remained under the radar since. But if you ask us, it belongs at the top of the pantheon of great family-friendly fantasies.

Bond with your tweens and teens when you watch these must-see films

Everyone can relate to a good coming-of-age movie. Parents watch them and get nostalgic for the ups and downs of their youth. Tweens and teens look to them for guidance, advice, or at the very least, some sign that they’re not alone in what they’re going through. Better still, they’re great for helping grown-ups and their kids bond over laughs, adolescent cringe, and real-life lessons. Whether you’re looking for a film that might help you broach a difficult topic with your child or simply want to share some of the films that guided you into adulthood, here are 14 coming-of-age movies you’ll definitely want to bring up during the next family movie night.

Turning Red

This Academy Award-nominated animated film about an adolescent girl who suddenly finds herself being magically transformed into a giant red panda has quickly become a family favorite, and it’s a great one to watch, especially with tweens. Tackling the (taboo for some) topic of menstruation head-on through the lens of an Asian American family is refreshing in terms of subject matter and representation. It’s currently streaming on DisneyPlus.

Stand By Me

Rob Reiner’s film based on a Stephen King novella is a major coming-of-age classic. It follows a group of best friends on their journey to find the body of a missing child, and the challenges they face along the way that alter their lives forever. It touches on difficult topics like bullying, grief, and trauma. Starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell, watch it now on Paramount+.

Crooklyn

A semi-autobiographical dramedy co-written by Spike Lee and his siblings Joie and Cinqué, Crooklyn is a heartfelt and hilarious look at black girlhood through the eyes of a nine-year-old girl living in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood one summer in the 1970s. Starring Alfre Woodard, Delroy Lindo, Isaiah Washington, and Zelda Harris, watch it now on Peacock.

Real Women Have Curves

Real Women Have Curves is a coming of age movie for teens
HBO Films

Starring Superstore’s America Ferrera, this film about a young Mexican-American woman caught between her desire to move away for college and her sense of obligation to stay home and help provide for her family brings the first-generation, coming-of-age experience to life. Watch it now on HBO Max.

The Edge of Seventeen

When high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) finds out her brother is dating her best friend, her life begins to spin out. But when a new friend comes alone, she realizes not all is lost—a great lesson for every teen struggling with unwelcome changes. Also starring Blake Jenner, Woody Harrelson, and Haley Lu Richardson, it’s now streaming on Hulu Premium.

CODA

While the circumstances and details change, many teens understand what it’s like to be caught between your family’s needs and your own desires. In this Academy Award-winning film, 17-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones) is stuck between helping her deaf family with their fishing business and pursuing her newfound love of singing. Also starring Troy Kotsur (who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), Marlee Maitlin, and Daniel Durant, you can stream it with your family on Apple TV.

A Wrinkle In Time

A Wrinkle in Time is a coming of age movie for kids
Disney

Although we remember this as more of a sci-fi story, A Wrinkle In Time is also the coming-of-age story of Meg Murray, who travels through space and time in search of her father while making friends and growing into herself along the way. Directed by Ava DuVernay, this lovely adaptation stars Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Chris Pine, and is available to watch on Disney+.

But I’m A Cheerleader

This black comedy from 1999 stars a young Natasha Lyonne as Megan, a high school cheerleader who gets sent to a conversion camp by her homophobic parents. It’s not as depressing as it sounds—instead, the film highlights why these camps don’t work and helps LGBTQ+ youth feel seen (plus RuPaul is one of the counselors!) Also starring Clea DuVall, it’s now streaming on Paramount Plus and Showtime.

Morris from America

When Morris, a young American teen with dreams of becoming a hip-hop star, moves to Germany with his widowed father, he’s quickly faced with the reality that he’s essentially a fish out of water. It’s a comedy that delicately but still hilariously touches on everything from romance and drug experimentation to racism, grief, and living as an ex-pat. Starring Craig Robinson and Markees Christmas, stream it on HBO Max.

Little Women

Little Women
Sony Pictures

Louisa May Alcott’s tale about the trials and tribulations of four sisters growing up during and after the Civil War remains a timeless treasure. Despite being a period piece, the themes of family, love, rejection, loss, and forgiveness continue to make fans hundreds of years later. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, and Florence Pugh, stream it with the kids on Starz.

Mean Girls

This hilarious coming-of-age movie is a must-watch for any femme tween or teen dealing with the inevitable mean girl at their own school. When Cady finds herself in a new school dividing her time between the it-crowd and her “nerdier” best friends, she quickly finds out popularity comes with a price. Stream on Paramount+ or Pluto TV.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

The quintessential movie about skipping school with your best friends and trying to have the best time of your life was one many of us grew up with and can now share with our kiddos.
