These are some of the must-have Pride Month 2023 goodies we’re loving this year

It’s (somehow) already June. Yeah, we have no idea how that happened so fast, either. But it did. And that means Pride Month 2023 is here. The time when the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies come together to honor the progress made in the fight for equality and to recognize the major work that still lies ahead. Of course, there are vibrant parades and festivities. But Pride Month is also an important platform to amplify the voices and stories of queer individuals, fostering a sense of inclusivity and acceptance. It’s also the perfect time to talk to our kiddos about all the love and different identities that make the people we’re surrounded by so fantastically diverse.

In recent years, an increasing number of companies have stepped up to support the LGBTQIA+ community by launching a wide array of Pride products and we’re so here for them. These colorful and empowering items not only showcase solidarity but also provide a means for individuals to express their identities and spread awareness. From rainbow-inspired goodies to products created by members of the community itself, they all contribute to the ongoing quest for equality, acceptance, and, most importantly, inclusion. Tinybeans is here to support all families, and these are some of the Pride Month 2023 products that will help you and your family do the same, all year long.

It’s been a few years since Disney’s famed Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique has taken reservations thanks to the pandemic, but the wait is almost over. The one-of-a-kind experience is getting ready to re-open its doors on August 25!

Reservations for the boutique are set to open up in early August, and once guests return, they will be able to embrace a more gender-neutral experience. Disney Parks have announced that the old “Fairy Godmothers in Training” will now be known as “Fairy Godmother’s Apprentices.”

The new moniker is a big step in making sure all cast members feel included and that everyone is welcome when it comes to dressing up and embracing the magic that Disney is known for. For the first time, men will be able to work at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique!

Until now, only female cast members could hold the title ‘Fairy Godmothers in Training.’

KTLA reports that “Disney had actually made a decision to switch over to the new titles in 2020, but the implementation was delayed when the boutiques were shuttered amid the pandemic. The new titles were chosen to allow cast members of any gender to feel accepted and welcome while working at the shops, according to the representative.”

If you aren’t familiar with the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, it’s a royal experience where young princes and princesses have the opportunity to get pampered. Kids can choose hairstyles, makeup and accessories to transform into the character of their dreams.

Apprentices at the boutique help young guests choose the services they want, and now they can do it in a more inclusive environment. Disney Parks have been updating their language for years to ensure all guests feel welcome, and this new change is a welcome addition for its cast members, too.

Expecting number two (or three or four…)? It could be a good time to prepare your child to welcome a new member of your family! The transition to the role of big brother or sister can be tough for little ones, with big emotions from jealousy to nervousness to excitement and back again! We’ve rounded up five ways to help make the littlest members of your growing family thrive in their new role, from books to games and more!

1. Read a Story That Speaks Their Language

We love the book Original Cat, Copy Cat for its social and emotional learning with a core theme of relationship skills tailored to new siblings. Bonus: Reading Original Cat, Copy Cat, is an ideal way to spend one-on-one time together while working on crucial life skills that will come in handy with a new sibling on the way and beyond!

Pineapple the cat experiences the challenges of adjusting to an additional member of the family. Pineapple loves being an only cat—and then Kiwi comes along. But despite the chaos and the annoyances, Pineapple soon realizes that a new kitten—a new friend—makes everything twice as fun.

Original Cat, Copy Cat is a celebration of friendship and acceptance! For ages 4-8, this book is an excellent tool to help your child adjust to a new family member that speaks their language, told through fun and relatable characters. Sarah Kurpiel's simple use of expressive language and bold artwork makes for an irresistible picture book that's perfect for storytime sharing, siblings-to-be and animal lovers everywhere—Original Cat, Copy Cat is out August 3

Get your copy and start reading Original Cat, Copy Cat today!

2. Play a Game Without Words

Babies cry—a lot! (And sometimes, for no reason at all.) Can you imagine needing something basic like food, some rest or an extra blanket and the only way you can ask for it is to go “WAAH”?! Why not try it yourselves and see what it’s like! Think of things your baby might want; to sleep, to play, to be held and so on. Pick something off the list and try to get it across to the other person without using words—it’s a fun/informative way to put yourselves in your baby’s (very tiny) shoes. Now your child may be just a little more patient next time they hear their new sibling crying.

Get your copy and start reading Original Cat, Copy Cat today!

3. Plan a Baby Date

The best way to get to know what life with a baby is like? Hang out with one! Plan a date to meet up with a friend/neighbor or family member’s baby for a few hours to help your child get a sense of what life is like beyond the bump! It’s a great way for them to get up close and personal with a bundle of joy to get to experience the snuggles and smiles, as well as the poopy diapers, as they get to know their new baby friend.

Get your copy and start reading Original Cat, Copy Cat today!

4. Take a Walk Down Memory Lane

Time to get out the baby books (or even just the photos/videos on your smartphone)! What better way to get them psyched for their new baby brother or sister than to relive their newborn days! It’s a great bonding experience, too, looking back on how adorable, sweet and cuddly they were before they learned the word “no!”. Talking about how much they have grown and the differences between now and then as they gaze at images of their younger self will help them connect with their yet-to-be-born best bud, too. It helps kids to understand that the new baby in their family won’t be a crying (but cute) little lump forever, but turn into a big kid that’s fun to play with, just like them!

Get your copy and start reading Original Cat, Copy Cat today!

5. Include Them in the Journey

Because we all want to feel included, right?! Take your child with you to the doctor to hear the baby’s heartbeat. Share ultrasound photos of your baby and try to find all the tiny little parts together. Let them help put together the nursery, choosing colors and decor they think their new brother or sister will love. Once baby is here, get them involved in their care (depending on how old they are). Let them get a diaper or wipes for you, give the baby a favorite toy or even help feed them—it’s bonding time at its best!

Spring has sprung and the fragrant notes of cherry, chocolate and chardonnay waft in the air. Afternoon Excursions

Patterson Cellars - SoDo

Patterson Cellars

Chocolate and wine go together like peanut butter and jelly. Patterson Cellars has taken this palate-pleasing concept to a whole new organic-peanut-butter-and-lingonberry-preserves-level. Part of the SoDo Urban Works, Patterson Cellar’s tasting room is large and light with an outdoor patio and large tables to easily enjoy their famous food and wine pairings. The Jcoco chocolate and wine experience is sensory magic. The 2019 Mélange Blanc is paired with Cayenne Veracruz Orange White Chocolate, while the 2017 BDX is paired with Black Fig Pistachio Dark Chocolate. Yum!

The mini-bars are quite generous so little hands can grab some chocolate bites too. Sharing is caring. We recommend adding in the Heritage cheese platter to impress your foodie friends. Next door, Nine Pies Pizzeria serves up delicious ‘za so when your kiddos get hungry you can grab a slice or bring a whole pie back to the tasting room. No diets allowed.

Extra Pour: For dessert (because chocolate is one of the four food groups) try the 2018 Port with vanilla, orange and spice notes.

Good to know: You can also taste Patterson Cellars wines at their Woodinville locations (Hollywood Hills and the Warehouse District) or in Leavenworth.

Tinte Cellars - Georgetown

Brad Johnson

Tinte Cellars recently opened its Georgetown location and has already become a beloved fixture in this vibrant neighborhood. A former Vespa repair shop revamped into a vino bar, the transformation was made with passion and respect for the building. The owners saved the original exposed-beam ceiling—an architectural feat—and proudly placed a red Vespa atop the roof, above a “Greetings from Georgetown” mural. The back patio has more art with firepits, tented tables and a back gate that rolls open, letting the party into the streets for events like Art Attack.

Beer fans can order rotating local suds, the snacks all come from local vendors, and younger guests receive complimentary juice and crackers. There is always a craft for adults and kids to enjoy. “Great wine for the greater good” is their mantra and it shows: Tinte Cellars gives back a generous portion of sales to the community. So drink up! It’s good for you and your neighbors.

Extra Pour: Bring home the 2019 Viognier and ask for a few QR code cards. These innovative videos bring winemaker and wine lover together with the click of a smart phone.

Good to know: Families can also find Tinte Cellars tasting rooms in Woodinville in the Warehouse District and Hollywood Hills. Reservations are required for tastings at all locations.

Sigillo Cellars - Snoqualmie

Sigillo Cellars

A day trip to Snoqualmie brings the unexpected. Just a quick drive on I-90 suddenly transports the fam into small town charm. Though they began producing wine for personal pleasure out of a garage, Sigillo Cellars is anything but small town. Now an award-winning wine, the Sigillo Cellars tasting room is a local gathering place located in the historic Sunset Theater. The grand yet cozy indoor tasting room offers light bites and always welcomes the whole family—bring the tiny tots and four-legged pals, too.

The new outdoor seating area is decorated with tables, and a twinkling tree, with the majestic Mt. Si as the backdrop for sipping at twilight. Following guidelines live entertainment will start up again soon—locals and visitors come to enjoy the music, and the kids will start the dance party! For those wanting to turn wine tasting into an all-day outing, we recommend taking a Hidden Northwest walking tour in the morning, lunching at Buckshot Honey mid-day, and then settling in for an evening of smooth wine and chill tunes at Sigillo Cellars Snoqualmie.

Good to know: Sigillo Cellars also has a tasting room overlooking the cerulean Lake Chelan. Uncork the just released, award-winning Cabernet Franc and enjoy the view.

Browne Family Vineyards - SoDo

ghirardelli square uncorked

Ambiance is key at this SoDo tasting room. Located in the Seller Building, the decor has a film noir feel to it that'll make you feel like you've turned back the clock once you step inside. Make a reservation and then get down to enjoying a glass of these vintages that highlight the PNW's best varietals. Reds are their strong suit, but you can't go wrong with a chilled can of chard or rosé on a balmy day. For a real treat, check out these tasting room exclusives you can only sip on-site.

Waterbrook Winery - Walla Walla

Waterbrook Winery

Waterbrook Winery knows that little ones love to feel included, especially when it’s a family outing. While adults sip and savor award-winning wines, the kids get a tasting flight of their own. Milk! Vanilla, strawberry, and regular milk are presented with as much flair as the Cabernet Sauvignon. The beautifully designed tasting room is curated with chic gifts, and the outdoor patio sits next to a rippling pond. Arrive hungry–you won’t want to miss out on Chef Karla Wilsey’s farm-to-table fare and seasonal menus. Walla Walla is famous for its harvest bounty. We recommend joining the wine club. Waterbrook makes for a relaxing yet festive gathering place. It’s free to join and members can bring up to ten guests for complimentary tastings.

Foundry Vineyards

For art aficionados this winery is a perfect pairing. The Foundry began as an art production facility, working with artists from around the world. What began as a place for creatives in the metal sculpture realm turned into a place for creatives in the wine making arts as well. Today this tasting room is an art gallery featuring all media, a design store and a sculpture garden where guests sip among the works of art. Every bottle is delicious, but their “Pét Project” is notable for using low-intervention, ancestral methods for making sparkling wine. The Foundry offers nourishment for the soul as well as the body. Yoga in the gallery is a unique experience; the yogis welcome children to join in the namaste. Reservations strongly recommended.

Extra Pour: Grab a bottle from the Library collection and take a stroll through the art gallery and sculpture garden.

Good to know: Foundry Vineyards also has a Seattle location (524 1st Ave. S.) if prefer to sip locally.

Lake Chelan Winery - Chelan

Lake Chelan Winery

Lake Chelan Winery neatly wraps up friendly and fun with a bow. They prefer guests think of them as a “neighbor who just happens to have a killer wine collection.” Yes, please. The wine is wonderful. They have cider options for hot days, and their market offers everything from picnic items to gifts. Their onsite gourmet cheese shop is fromagerie fabulous and oenophiles will learn exactly which cheese to choose after taking a winery tour. BBQ in the vineyard is a renowned party, soon to resume in May (per guidelines), with a saucy kids menu. The property is wide and beautiful–a perfect playground for your tiny balls of energy, with outdoor kids’ games, hula hoops, bean bags and coloring books for quieter amusement. Too bad the “neighbor” isn’t right next door, but the outing to Lake Chelan is always worth it.

Extra Pour: We love Falling Cow White, a whimsical wine with an accompanying poem about a cow that goes for a swim. It's guaranteed to make the Littles laugh.

28 Amazing Pumpkin Carving Designs to Try This Year

The World’s Simplest Pumpkin Craft

You’ll Go Out of Your Gourd Over These Incredible Jack-o’-Lanterns

Our world contains nearly 8 billion people and each one has a different story. And while we may connect with many individuals on a daily basis, whether at school or work, it’s your responsibility as a parent to teach your children how to lead with inclusive actions. This way, they’ll be able to display acceptance and compassion to everyone.

Why Should You Discuss Tolerance?

Your kids may encounter hundreds of others throughout their childhood. These peers won’t exhibit the same features. Instead, they’ll each have their own distinct traits. It’s essential for you to show your children that these characteristics are mostly surface-level. For instance, an individual who uses a wheelchair isn’t inherently weaker than a non-disabled person. It’s necessary to highlight those truths so that your kids don’t make assumptions.

It’s natural for your kids to ask “why?” when they see someone who appears to be different from them. If you choose to discuss tolerance from the start, it’ll be easier for your children to accept people earlier rather than later. The sooner you can prevent prejudice, the better! As a result, they’ll grow up to become strong leaders who advocate for others—and society benefits from these practices.

Here are ways to have conversations about community with your children while at home.

1. A Family Is a FamilyThis book by Sara O’Leary covers several appropriate topics. One character talks about how they’re raised by their grandmother, while another talks about their two fathers. It’s essential to emphasize that every person should feel included and welcomed no matter their gender, race, sexuality, or ability. This idea extends to family life. You don’t need to have a mother and a father to experience love. A story like this one can help your kids understand different family dynamics—and why it’s okay not to have a nuclear family by definition.

2. Sesame Street: In 2017, Sesame Street introduced its newest cast member named Julia. The puppet has autism, which viewers see through her various behavioral quirks. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to find kid-appropriate television shows that address disabilities head-on. Programs like Sesame Street can teach children what autism looks like for some individuals. They give non-disabled individuals a glimpse into Julia’s world. This information can help them understand kids that they already know from school. Your children can recognize that it’s not wrong to act “differently.” These lessons can also teach them how to interact with others more productively.

3. Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America: It’s never too early to talk to your kids about race. If you’re white, you likely recognize racism but you’re not sure how to address it as an issue. Maybe you don’t “see color,” even though it’s vital to acknowledge African American identities. In any case, it’s essential to educate yourself alongside your children. There’s always room to grow, especially when it comes to relevant topics like race. “Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America” by Jennifer Harvey teaches families how to foster anti-racist dialogue so that their kids can navigate a diverse world. This book can help you raise children that know how to be impactful allies for their black peers, as well as other people of color.

4. Learning Our LGBTs: Lindsey Amer created a YouTube channel called “Queer Kid Stuff” to teach young children about sexuality. In her series “Learning Our LGBTs,” Amer sits down to talk about each letter that makes up “LGBT.” She uses kid-friendly language and examples to make the point that we’re all people who deserve to be treated with respect. If you need a more care-free way to discuss these points, try Amer’s show. This series can also help parents, especially if you’re unsure about how to approach more complicated concepts like gender identity. Indeed, your kids may not need to know about these notions for a few more years, but it’s never too early to learn.

5. Teaching Young Children About Race: Here’s a beneficial resource if you need actionable tips on how to teach your children to become anti-biased. “Teaching Young Children About Race: A Guide for Parents and Teachers” includes points that translate directly to reality. Writers Louise Derman-Sparks and Julie Olsen Edwards pull excerpts from “Anti-Bias Education for Young Children & Ourselves” to help readers resist prejudice and discrimination.

It’s always important to learn, but it’s even more necessary to put your knowledge to work. It’s never too early or too late to learn about inclusion. Your children should know how to show accept all individuals, no matter their gender, race, sexuality, or ability.

How to throw a great zoom party for your kid’s birthday party during a pandemic is…not a sentence I ever thought I would write. Dealing with the disappointing reality of birthdays during COVID-19 is totally a drag. However, it also builds the grit, the resilience, and flexible thinking that can actually fortify our kids with amazing life-skills long after the pandemic is a distant memory. I can’t wait for that! But in the meantime—you have to make a party.

Here’s a little checklist of stuff to master before the party:

1. Let friends in the waiting room.

2. Share their screen—and make sure that the host is the only one who can do this!

3. Mute and unmute participants.

This tech mastery can go a long way toward empowering the birthday kid. Then it really feels like they are the host of their own party.

Pick a Party Theme That Makes Your Kid Happy

While, of course, you can certainly just simply gather kids and play some fun games, I do suggest that there is a unifying theme. Figuring out what this should be can be a fun way to bond with your soon-to-be-birthday kid. Get out a pen and paper (or crayon, or that ever-present whiteboard) and make a list of beloved stuff.

Designate a Leader for the Party

Just like in “real life” it is helpful to designate a person in charge of the party games.

It could be: You or your partner on a different device than the birthday kid, a fun aunt or uncle, a great babysitter, a beloved music teacher, a company that your kid loves like soccer, music, theater or tech that can bring teachers to your party.

Characters Can Get Invited Too!

The coolest thing about Zoom is the ability to teleport in a character for a really brief time to lead a game! From a different device, a parent, friend or teacher can log on and pretend to be a character. Kids get captivated and transported and the new adult adds a freshness. Kids want to suspend disbelief, to imagine, make-believe and play. This gives them the opportunity! I suggest having some good improv at the ready, a fun accent and a simple costume! The character can lead a game or two and disappear. That shift of perspective is an awesome way to add variety and keep the kids engaged. You really don’t need to hire a fancy company to do the make-believe. Just enlist a family friend, relative or babysitter.

Create the Invitation

Granted, it may seem like overkill to make an invitation for the party. However, I would argue that these days it is more important than ever to indulge in the celebration however we can. So, go for it!  Paperless Post has lots of cool options with varying price-points, and you can add the link there. I also like that platform since you can track the RSVPs and send a reminder. You can also make a sweet and simple invite with a picture of your birthday kid and send it out over email.

Best of all, with making an invitation, you are welcoming your child into the planning process. Make it an occasion, dress up (either costume or fancy—an excuse to get out of PJs either way!), and have a photoshoot for the invite. Building up the expectation and the joyous anticipation is a boon of the birthday!

Zoom Party Game Tips

1. Make a list so you have a game plan at the ready!

2. Balance out any moving games with any stationary guessing games.

3. Find something really simple for the start so kids joining in at staggered times and feel included and not confused.

4. End with a bang and the cake so that kids don’t sign off before that happens.

5. Have some games as a back-burner in case some go quicker than you expected.

Great Games to Play Over Zoom

1. Jokes or Riddles (this is great as kids are entering the room)

2. Freeze dance

3. Mirror

4. Who started the motion?

5. Sneaky Tag

Be flexible as you play, taking into account kids’ attention spans. Also, if something is really fun and working well, you can play a second round or return to it at the end. In general, keep the games fast-paced and keep ‘em rolling too!

Celebrate Your Child with a Spotlight Shout-Out or a Video

If you are feeling ambitious, you can ask family and friends to send in a little “Happy Birthday” message and edit this all together. At the end of the party, you can screen share the video and end on a totally celebratory and personal note. Short of that, kids can go around the “room” and share something that they love about the birthday kid. This is a really special way to spotlight everyone while still making it all about your kids’ special day.

Ending the Party

Singing is not great over zoom, but who cares…Your options are to either hear everyone at slightly different times, or mute everyone, have them sing, but spotlight only one singer. Kids may want to stick around and chat with each other in an unstructured way but when your kid is ready to end the party, do it.

Don’t Forget to Thank the Guests

They may not have brought presents, they may have come in their PJs, but showing up for stuff—on any level these days—is a big ask! Thank your guests after the party with a follow-up note through the invitation platform or an email to the guests. The birthday kid gets a little gratitude practice and it makes the friends feel great too!

Young kids want to play with toys that they can relate to, which is why one teacher took it upon herself to make her students feel included and created dolls with hearing aids.

Genesis Politron is a preschool and Kindergarten teacher who works with deaf and hearing-impaired students. When she was shopping for toys for her classroom she realized there weren’t any dolls that were outfitted with hearing aids and cochlear implants like her students––so she decided to design some herself.

https://twitter.com/gpolitron_/status/1177459367357992961

“I thought of all of the times that I played with my own dolls as a little girl, and how I’d always reach for the doll that I identified most with. I wanted my students to have the same opportunity, and to be represented in the toys that they play with,” Politron told CNN. “No child should ever feel as if they aren’t ‘normal’ or as if they don’t belong. I wanted to allow my students to see themselves in toys for once, to feel accepted.”

With just a little bit of glitter and creativity, Politron was able to fashion hearing aids and cochlear implants for the classroom baby dolls. Her ingenuity paid off––the students were very surprised to see the dolls and haven’t stopped playing with them since.

“Those with cochlear implants tend to only reach for the doll with cochlear implants, and those with hearing aids tend to do the same. It’s so exciting to watch their interactions with them, and watch as they identify with the doll that resembles them,” she said. “Now, I watch as they feed their babies everyday, and ‘rock them to sleep’, and it’s the sweetest sight!”
