A vacation with your partner or friends should be on your list for 2024

With the holidays on the horizon and all of that togetherness planned, now is the perfect time to book an adults-only vacation for the new year. Parents need time away. Adults-only vacations can strengthen your relationship with your partner, your favorite group of moms, or even your own mother. You can remember what you were like before you had kids. You can relax on the beach and actually read a book. Yes, a whole book!

These adults-only all-inclusive resorts know what parents want: delicious dinners that last well past sunset, afternoons spent at the spa, swim-up suites, and nobody calling you “mommy” or “daddy.” Here are some of our favorite resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, the U.S, and beyond.

Castle Hot Springs | Arizona

From as far back as the late 19th century, elite families like the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts would make the bumpy journey via stagecoach to remote Castle Hot Springs, an oasis in the desert well known for its restorative water. The once-popular resort eventually declined and then burned down in 1976. The resort was brought back in February 2019, and those looking for relaxation and a zen-like atmosphere have enjoyed it ever since. Once there, couples will find just 32 bungalows and cabins, along with the signature natural hot springs. The restorative water flows into bedroom soaking tubs, the main swimming pool, and three rock grotto pools. The water can also flow into your veins if you swig the resort’s own Lithium Lagerbeer, made from the natural spring water. Spa services incorporating spring water are available, as well as horseback riding and yoga.

Chicago-Inspired Baby Names That Put the Wind in Our Sails

A family trip to Destin, Florida, will have you wondering why you never considered this pitch-perfect panhandle spot before

When people think of Florida vacations, a few obvious spots top the list: Orlando, of course, and then Miami, Tampa, and West Palm Beach. But there’s one destination that is quickly rising in popularity for in-the-know families: Destin.

Located on Florida’s Panhandle along the Gulf of Mexico, it’s home to stunning white sand beaches, emerald green water, and a fishing community so vibrant that the beach town has come to be known as “the world’s luckiest fishing village.” But between that and its abundance of golf courses, is Destin really much of a family-friendly destination?

Turns out, for many families with young children, the underrated coastal city is the ideal antidote to the typical frenetic Florida vacation. In Destin, you can avoid overpriced admission tickets to overcrowded excursions in lieu of a more relaxed environment that lets everyone—parents and kiddos alike—actually enjoy themselves.

Where to Stay in Destin, Florida

Whether you prefer to stay in a beachfront hotel or bed-and-breakfast, feel pampered in a luxury resort, or spread out in a vacation home or condo rental, Destin has lodging options that meet the needs of all families. It’s even a prime destination for campers and RV travelers thanks to the pristine, 200-acre Henderson Beach State Park right along the water.

A can’t-go-wrong option? The Henderson Beach Resort, a gracious, four-story beach retreat nestled between the Gulf and the aforementioned nature preserve for which it gets its name. Reminiscent of a luxurious seaside manor, it certainly plays up the nostalgia—black-and-white framed photos showcasing its humble beginnings and nautical history are scattered throughout the hotel’s walls. But ostentatious, it is not.

From its meandering lazy river (be sure to request a floatie or bring your own!) to Sprinkles, its in-house ice cream shop, having fun is key. During spring and summer months, the resort offers every parent’s dream amenity (especially considering the on-site spa!): a child drop-off service. Poppy’s Kids Club, a creative space designed just for kids includes themed activities and lunch for a $75 fee. Off-season, the hotel still hosts kid-friendly crafternoons. Think: sand art ornaments and tie-dyed T-shirts.

What to Do in Destin, Florida

Your first stop should be Little Adventures, an online service that connects curious families with bite-sized outdoor adventures. Just use the site’s handy filters—you can narrow down options by kid ages, cost, or the amount of time you want to spend—to receive a hit list of classes or activities that best fit. With several Little Adventures outposts throughout Destin, there’s always a sand sculpture class or a beginner paddle boarding lesson happening somewhere.

Insider Tip: Little Adventures also has a live chat feature in which you can talk to actual local moms in real-time and ask all those deeply specific questions you know you have about an upcoming excursion: do I need to pack a snack? Will they provide life vests for babies? How good of a swimmer does my preschooler need to be? Consider it free vacation planning!

Go Fishing

Listen, fishing isn’t for everyone, but everyone is an angler while in Destin. And if you’re at all curious, this is the place to literally test the waters. You can show up with no gear and no experience (and even no fishing license if you opt to hop on one of Destin’s many charter boats!) and walk away with a newfound appreciation for the sport.

If you’re in town any day throughout the month of October, you’ll get to experience the Destin Fishing Rodeo, an annual competition that dates back to 1948. It’s open to all ages and skill levels, but spectating is the easiest of all. Just set up shop at HarborWalk Village and watch as boats unload their catches onto the official weigh-in barge. Those with squeamish stomachs might not appreciate the fish guts and blood, but it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to marvel at an amateur fisherperson posing next to a 200-pound catch.

Save the Sea Turtles

There’s no better place to foster your family’s love of marine life than at Destin’s Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center, which promotes the rehabilitation and release of all stranded sea turtle species. Sign up for a low-cost marine-biologist-led tour, and your family can meet the program’s current roster of sea turtles, perform their own initial assessments of a few fake sea turtles, and learn ways they can help sea turtles long after their visit. (Hint: there’s a reason Destin’s beachfronts use only red and orange lights at night!)

Where to Eat in Destin, Florida

Speaking of fish, Destin is famous for its gulf-to-table seafood. Camille’s at Crystal Beach, for instance, serves seafood caught in local waters by local fishermen and unloaded right on the dock at Harbor Docks Seafood Market. (Their gumbo is a must-try.) The Henderson's own Primrose Restaurant serves up creative contemporary takes on classic fish fare and some of the best sushi on the panhandle, and if you are looking for fish fajitas, there's no better spot than on the beachfront patio of Rockin Tacos. And perhaps the most family-friendly restaurant in all of Destin belongs to Lulu's. Founded by Lucy Buffett (yes, Jimmy Buffett's little sister), this spot features coastal recipes created by Lucy herself, but it also has dedicated allergy menus whether you are averse to eggs, gluten, dairy, or even, yes, shellfish.

Fun fact: If you want to do some good while filling your stomachs throughout Destin, ask your server if they've got any lionfish specials. Why? Lionfish are an invasive species that prey on more than 30 different types of native fish, including those two-thirds their size, in the Gulf of Mexico. Although they are delicious, they aren't a common menu item because they are hard to catch and removing their venemous spines is enough of a chore to make them too costly. However, some organizations and restaurants, like Brotula's Seafood House, will cook up whatever fish you catch (lionfish included!) and partner with conservation groups to serve it up. Consider biting into one of these pesky-yet-beautiful fish a Destin bucket list item!

How to Get to Destin, Florida

The Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport is, as you’d expect, the closest airport. It’s located just 16 miles away in Valparaiso. Because it’s such a small airport, direct flights outside of Florida are harder to come by—there’s a good chance you’ll need a quick layover. Once you arrive, though, be sure to peep the aquarium of lionfish on your way out of the airport.

Editor’s note: This trip was paid for by Destin-Fort Walton Beach, but all opinions belong to the writer.

9. Does mom love gardening and flowers? If so, you can plant some of her favorite flowers or help her in the garden. You could even make it a yearly tradition to plant a tree honoring mother earth and your mother every year.

10. Backyard Bliss. Put her favorite cheese, crackers and beverage in the cooler and spread out the blanket for a backyard picnic . Even better, order up one of these Brie Grazing Boards and serve her a fancy charcuterie platter. Some of the best Mother's Day ideas can happen in your backyard!

11. Mom Campout. If mom's favorite spot is by the campfire, fear not, set up a tent at home! You can cozy up with her in the tent and read some favorite books together. Added Bonus: you can go sleep in your own beds if the sleeping bags just won't cut it.

12. Imaginative Adventures. Pretend that you are a tourist in your own house. Give mom a grand tour of the house. For added fun, you can make a treasure hunt for mom with clues like, "under the bed where you kiss me the best goodnight," or "mudpie time" for clues hidden in the mud-kitchen in the backyard.

Hyatt Regency Lake Washington

Julietta Skoog

If the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington was a painting, the title would be "Chillin' by the Lake". Upon entering the vast but welcoming lobby, the lake view and Seattle skyline seem to envelop the back of the hotel, beckoning guests to grab a chair on the outdoor patio and let the relaxation begin. Opened in 2017, this hotel is already a neighborhood favorite and community staple. Brimming with goodies for the little ones, families can check in knowing their vacation or staycation will be spectacular. Water's Table is highly recommended as it masters the art of fine dining alongside family feasting. Also recommended to please carnivores is the Akaushi Tomahawk Ribeye, a platter of exquisitely cooked aged marbled beef perfect for groups sharing.

Families can experience this and more with the Junior Suite, an 825-square-foot room with elevated living space plus an extra TV and sofa. Plus, who doesn't love dress up fairy wings, dinosaur play sets, giant checkerboard and checkers, movie trivia and books that are among the available delights. Whatever you choose, the experience will be stylish and entertaining for the whole fam.

If a wholesome dose of old-fashioned, Midwestern Americana sounds like the perfect setting for your next family adventure, then exploring the state of Nebraska should be on your family travel bucket list. With so much more than cornfields and wheat crops to explore, families making their way through the state can tromp through orchards, play on farms, wander through gardens and indulge a stunning array of culinary delights. Read on to discover the surprising (and tasty) adventures and family vacation to Nebraska has to offer.

Exploring Nebraska

From Omaha to Lincoln to Nebraska City, the great state of Nebraska offers visiting families room to run, play and explore. Each of these cities has its own charm, plenty of shopping, unique family adventures, awesome places to dine, and cool places to stay. Extend your vacation hopping from one city to the next as you take in the best the state has to offer.

Omaha

Do
Launch your family vacation in Omaha, where there is so much fun for visiting families to have. Your first stop? Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium! This amazing spot is dedicated to saving species around the world. With 130 acres to explore kids can stretch their legs while wandering through the world’s largest indoor desert and the largest indoor rainforest in North America. Your kids will get a thrill from meeting animals from all over the world and going on adventures that include underground caves and treks across the globe.

Get to know the town of Omaha better when you explore the Old Market Area. Packed with awesome shopping opportunities, this is the place to pick up your souvenirs. This area has an abundance of art galleries,  gift shops and candy stores your kids won’t want to leave. Once they are good and sugared up, you can take them to the nearby Heartland of America Park and Fountain where they can run along a paved path and play in the grass while taking in the water works show.

If you’re visiting Omaha in the fall…don’t miss Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard for a real Nebraska farm experience. Depending on when you visit, you cans spend your time plucking a variety of apples from trees or playing in the pumpkin patch and farm. Activities include a hay rack ride, barnyard adventure, haunted houses to wander through, a corn and pirate maze, a giant play area, a petting coral and so much more. It’s one of the most impressive farm experiences you are likely to have had.

Eat
Grab a tasty breakfast at the Saddle Creak breakfast Club where you can dine on traditional breakfasts with a modern twist. We suggest the Classic Biscuits and Gravy and the Ham and Eggs. Hit the Benson Brewery for lunch or dinner where you’ll find an elevated approach to pub food. We love the Bacon Blue Burger, but the Baked Mac & Cheese is our favorite dish for parents and kids alike. Best of all, this is the perfect spot for the vegan in your family, with options like Seitan Vegan wings. Forno offers visiting families another awesome lunch or dinner spot where you can grab a meal Italian style. The whole family will love their wood-fired pizza and selections of meats and cheeses. Take dessert to Ted & Wally’s where the whole family can enjoy locally-made ice cream, sundaes and soda fountain drinks.

Stay
The Courtyard Omaha La Vista is the perfect place to call home for your stay. The rooms are cozy and come in a variety of sizes and suites. Amenities include onsite dining and a fitness room so you can work off all of the food you’ll be eating.

Lincoln

Do
Make Bakers Candies the first stop once you hit Lincoln, the capital of the great state of Nebraska. Known as the official home of Nebraska’s famous chocolate meltaways, this shop will absolutely thrill the kiddos and give you tons of treats to take home or enjoy on the road. Candies are made onsite. Think of this shop as the state’s very own Willy Wonka chocolate factory.

Grab some fresh air at the Sunken Gardens where you and the kids can wander for hours and marvel at the koi pond, water fountains and rock gardens. Don’t skip the Lincoln Children’s Museum where you’ll find 23,000 square feet of exhibit space to explore. While you are there, head to the Apple Orchard exhibit where your kids will recognize items they saw on the farm.

Of course, you have to hit the farm for a real Nebraska experience. So hop on over to Rocca Berry Farm, home to the oldest and largest pumpkin patch in Lancaster County. Here you can make your way through the corn maze or let the kids play for hours on their giant slides, go on a hay ride, or ride the rails. There are so many attractions at this farm, you’ll be hard pressed to get through all of them in one day. There’s one thing you can count on though…at the end of your stay, your kids will be completely worn out!

Dine
Grab a coffee and some breakfast at the Alice in Wonderland themed Rabbit Hole Bakery. This spot offers a variety of pastries, muffins, scones and cinnamon rolls, all of which are sure to delight every member of your family. For a more filling afternoon meal, head to the Dish for some elevated fare. Options like seared steak salad and the bacon grilled cheese satisfy the biggest appetite. This spot serves lunch and dinner. Another popular dinner options is the Venue, where you’ll find an incredible steak and seafood menu. Try their seared Ahi tuna or New York Strip. The kids will love their handmade pastas.

Stay
Lincoln has a brand new hotel that is sure to be a treat for your family. Bringing a little big city to this Nebraska town, The Kindler recently opened and offers travelers luxury accommodations and next-level hospitality. Located in downtown Lincoln, you can choose from a variety of suites that come with all the amenities you need for comfort, onsite dining, and a fitness room. Even furry family members are welcome at this elegant hotel.

Nebraska City

Do
Your first stop in Nebraska City should be Arbor Day Farm! With 260 acres of stunning property and a treetop village to explore, this spot offers families a truly adventurous experience. While it’s famous for its apple picking opportunities, Arbor Day Farm gives visitors the opportunity to explore, play and soar through the treetops and gain a better understanding and appreciation for nature.

The three-acre treetop village allows children and adults to explore 11 tree houses without ever touching the ground. This attraction features the WonderNet, a trampoline suspended between trees, high above ground. You’ll be hard pressed to tear the kids away from this unique experience. Other opportunities for fun include the Discovery Ride and wine tasting for mom and dad.

Before you sack out for the night, hit Kimmel Orchard and head to their U-Pick barn or peruse their market for some tasty treats to bring home. This property features trails to wander along, hay rack rides, and the pollinator playground for the little ones’ enjoyment.

Dine
Your family is going to need a whole lot of fuel for all of the active fun this sweat city provides. Head to the Keeping Room for some of the best food in town. This cafe serves up classic comforts with a side of Nebraska style. We love their French dip and Turkey Panini. The kids will love the NY style cheesecake for dessert.

For some excellent Mexican fare, take your crew to El Portal where you can grab some traditional cuisine. From enchiladas to tamales to Tostadas, you’ll find all of your favorites in this family style eatery. Mom and dad will love their monster-sized margaritas after a day of swinging through trees.

Catch a home-cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner at Whispering Pines B&B, where you’ll also want to bunk for the night. The hostess makes delicious meals that will make grownups feel pampered and kids feel spoiled. Some beloved meals include Seasonal baked pancakes with homemade fruit topping and the egg fritatta.

Stay
The Whispering Pines B&B is the place to stay in Nebraska City. This beautiful historic 130 year-old home features modern comforts in a stunning old Victorian atmosphere. Sitting on six and a half acres, you’ll be surrounded by 100 year old pine trees, flower gardens, and a water garden with fountains. In the evening, you can sip a cocktail while soaking in a hot tub under the stars, or roast marshmallows over a fire.

8 Spring Break Trips Your Kids Will Talk About All Year

Experience the Wild West in Cheyenne

Nothing says summer vacation like a family road trip camping adventure. Whether you’re all in for s’mores around the campfire or you prefer glamping with a few more creature comforts, we’re telling you about five of our fave SoCal locales in the great outdoors that will get you in that vacation state of mind––faster than your kids can ask ‘are we there yet?’ From soaking up serenity in the Sequoias to a Catalina island getaway, read on for our top spots for where to go camping with your kids this summer.

Big Time Mountain Fun in Big Bear

Kerry Cushman

Kick summertime into high gear and head up the San Bernardino mountains to Big Bear, where winter-favorite Snow Summit turns into a playground for mountain biking, scenic chair lift rides and picturesque hiking. Take a chairlift ride to the top of the mountain, enjoy lunch with a view and make your way down the mountain by mountain bike, hike or chairlift. Check their calendar for family-friendly events, including Movies in the Meadow and Adventure Academy Summer Camps. When the weather heats up, it’s time to hit Big Bear Lake. Rent a pontoon boat at one of the local marinas and enjoy the cool lake breeze and awesome mountain views. When you need a refresh, stop in at The Copper Q cafe downtown for coffee, gourmet wraps and sandwiches and oogle over the delicious sweet treats, like homemade carrot cake and apple pie.

Ways to stay: We like Pine Knot Campground for its convenient location right next door to Snow Summit, and for $37/night, the price can’t be beat. Bring your tent or RV under 26 feet and don’t forget the s’mores! Or try Serrano Campground on the Fawnskin side of the lake for showers and RV hookups. Reservations for both can be made at Recreation.govWhile the hairpin mountain turns on the 330 provide some epic views, they are a bit intense for some. If that’s the case, try Highway 38 for a still-gorgeous scenic drive dotted with campgrounds and without the heart palpitations.

Adventures in Avalon on Catalina Island

Kerry Cushman

Part road trip and part awesome island adventure, this road/sea combo feels like you’ve traveled to the Mediterranean, a short jaunt from SoCal! To get there, ride in style via the Catalina Express' fleet of modern, fast boats from Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point. Opt for the Commodore Lounge tickets for VIP service, including a snack and a drink. Once you've arrived at this island paradise, get up close to fish and marine life at Undersea Expeditions. This semi-submarine takes passengers out to nearby Lover's Cove where fish swim by the portholes to the delight of passengers of all ages. Ticket booth is located on the big green pier. When you're back on land, get into a little friendly competition at Avalon's Golf Gardens, a mini-golf course located a short block from the beach with perfect pint-sized clubs for your little golfers. And to capture that beach-club vibe, head to Descanso Beach Club, where island time is in full effect. Opt for a frozen cocktail and lunch or hit the beach and rent cabana. While the little ones play at the beach, big kids up for an adventure can try the thrilling Zip Line Eco Tour, with stunning views of the island and sea.

Ways to stay: The Pavilion Hotel is steps from the sand, boardwalk and main pier. With a tropical vibe and daily made-to-order omelets at breakfast and nightly wine and gourmet cheese hour, it's the perfect home base for your Avalon island adventures. If you really want to getaway from city life, bring your tent and try one of the island campgrounds.

Serenity in the Sequoias

Kerry Cushman

While big sister Yosemite gets up to four times as many visitors per year, a road trip to the equally awe-inspiring Sequoia National Park is a vacation your family will never forget. Majestic redwood trees soar through the sky on your drive through the Redwood Forest and hikes for all abilities lead to epic mountain-top views. Take the Sherman Tree Trail for an up-close view of Earth's largest living tree, the mighty General Sherman. Stop in at the Giant Forest Museum on Generals Highway for giant sequoia exhibits and interactive discovery. There's endless ways to explore this beautiful natural playground, including the stunning Moro Rock hike and a docent-lead tour through the Crystal Caves. Fun Fact: Sequoia National Park was California's first national park!

Ways to stay: There are over 1,200 campsites available and the majority are first-come, first-served, however some reservations can be made in advance at Recreation.gov. Or opt for the Sequoia's signature hotel, the striking Wuksachi Lodge in the heart of the park. The lodge has over 100 guest rooms and a restaurant with stunning views.

Wild and Free in Idyllwild

Tyler L. via Yelp

Get out of the city and into stories around the campfire in less than two hours from San Diego. Located in the San Jacinto Mountains, Idyllwild has that small mountain town charm and is a perfect respite from urban dwelling. During the day, pack a picnic and try one of the many local hiking trails, like the Erine Maxwell Scenic Trail, which is great for families with shade and lots of nature to explore. After you’ve worked up an appetite, hit the artistic downtown and opt for grass-fed burgers at Mile High Cafe or if you’re feeling those plant-based vibes, try Plant Food Super Club Cafe, which boasts live music on weekends.

Ways to stay: Reserve a campsite at Recreation.gov (or try your luck for a walk-in) at one of the state parks like Idyllwild Park or Stone Creek campground. If you fancy a little more indoor comfort, try the Idyllwild Bunkhouse, a boutique motel with a continental breakfast delivered to your door every morning. If you really want to feel pampered, opt for the Grand Idyllwild Lodge. This luxurious mountain retreat has an on-site gym, sauna, spa, panoramic views and includes a gourmet breakfast.

Peaks and Pools in Palm Springs

Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa via Yelp

Off-season in Palm Springs means posh hotels with epic swimming pools at deeply discounted prices. To handle the triple-digit temps like a local, splash in the pool in the morning and early evening when the weather is warm and beautiful. In the sizzling midday sun, head up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for a whole different climate! Summer temperatures are about 30-40 degrees cooler than the desert floor, which means you can spend the day hiking and exploring in cooler mountain temperatures. There's even a restaurant, gift shop, snack shop and state park visitors center. Once the midday heat cools off, head back down the mountain for margaritas and Mexican food under the cool-air misters at Las Casuelas. For other indoor kid fun during the peak heat times, hit the Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert for hours of thoughtful STEAM fun.

Ways to stay: If you have older children and are up for a hardcore camping adventure, take the PS Aerial Tramway up to the mountain top (an elevation of 8,516 feet!) and hike-in to Round Valley Campground. While the 2.1 mile hike to the campground is fairly flat, it's not for the faint of heart. Campers must hike-in their own gear and bring their own water to one of the 28 primitive campsites. For something a little more luxe, check out the Omni Rancho Las Palmas with three pool settings including Splashtopia, featuring waterslides, a lazy river, sandy beach and tot splash pad. Or try the desert oasis at JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa and ride the indoor/outdoor gondola to dinner!
