They may not be able to talk, but infants are constantly communicating with the world around them, and boy are they eager to let parents and caregivers know what they want at any given time. As a parent, it won’t take long to decipher your baby’s code—you know, those high-pitched gurgles that tell you your little one is hungry, or the eye rubs that let you know nap time is near. When you miss a subtle signal or two (and you will, trust us), you’ll be made well aware by your baby’s not-so-subtle cries. That’s when you think: Wouldn’t it be great if they could TELL me what they needed? That’s why some parents turn to sign language for babies as a more consistent way to communicate with their kids before they know how to “use their words.”

What is baby sign language?

Baby signs are very simple hand gestures, often based on American Sign Language (ASL), that help babies who aren’t yet speaking to communicate basic needs to hearing parents. Each sign corresponds to a word that is super relevant to an infant’s life, like wanting “milk” or needing “help.” Teaching your baby sign language allows your child to communicate their biggest needs and make sure they’re met, explains Laura Payne, MDE, a baby ASL expert and teacher.  This lessens frustrations for both kids and parents and builds trust.

Payne explains that teaching your baby a few useful signs and building from there is a wonderful way to introduce them to a beautiful language while also helping them express their wants and needs throughout their daily routines. In doing so, you can consistently meet those needs, strengthening your attachment and boosting your confidence as a parent. 

When should you start teaching sign language to your baby?

When are those adorable little hands ready to start forming signs? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests teaching your baby sign language beginning at 6 months. This is thought to be a good window because developmentally infants are learning how to gesture around this time, but this milestone really kicks into high gear at the 8-month mark. Payne stresses that you’re never too early or too late to start. “Babies are born needing to communicate with us,” she says. “So you can start at 6 months or you can start when they’re learning to walk.” You know your baby better than anyone, so give it a go when you feel ready.

5 of the best signs to teach your infant:

The best way to teach your baby sign language is to choose signs that are important to you and your family and ones that you use a lot. Payne suggests starting with “high-functioning” words because they help your little one communicate their basic needs.

1. Milk

While keeping your hand steady in front of you, form the shape of a “C.” Then open and close your hand twice, ensuring your thumb closes over your fingers. You can start modeling this sign before your baby is old enough to do it themselves, and once they’re familiar with the sign you might see their eyes widen with excitement when they realize it’s milk time.

2. Eat

Make a rounded “O” with your fingers and then flatten your fingers out. Turn your fingers to face your chin and move them to your lips like you’re eating.

3. All Done

When signing “all done,” start with your palms facing in and the top of your hands facing out. In a quick motion, turn your palms to face out, and now you’re all done. Remember that you can use this sign in all kinds of situations, like during play and at the park—it’s not just for mealtime.

4. More

Bring your fingers and thumbs to touch and flatten both your hands—like the flat “O” when signing “eat.” Next, tap your fingers together and then pull them apart several times. Remember that your baby could be attempting this sign in any number of ways, from clapping their hands to tapping a single finger into the opposite palm.

5. Help

Your dominant hand is going to sign the letter “A” in ASL, or you can remember it as a thumbs up. Make a flat palm with your other hand and place it under your dominant hand. Raise both hands together to sign the word “help.”

How do you teach your baby sign language?

Payne recommends signing while saying the word at the same time, always remembering to embed the word in context. The next time you and your tot sit down to eat, this can mean signing the word for “eat” while using it in a sentence like, “It looks like you love to eat bananas” or “I see you eating those sweet potatoes.” This gives your little one the context of what the word means supported by the sign language. “I’d also recommend using statements over questions when you’re modeling [sign language],” Payne advises. 

It’s important to incorporate signs into your daily life and be sure to repeat them, according to Baby Sign Language. Research shows that repetition can be critically important for learning, so try to sign before, during, and after an event, like a meal. Another great way to help your baby learn to sign is when you read together. Payne says to sit your child on your lap so they have a clear view of your hands and the book. This way your baby can see you sign words you’re introducing (or already using) as you read.

What are the benefits of sign language for babies?

As far as baby sign language goes, there are benefits for everyone involved. Babies can express their thoughts and needs more effectively, which means less frustration and fewer tantrums due to communication barriers. It also saves parents a lot of time and frustration. If your baby signs “eat” you’ll know to prepare their favorite sweet potatoes instead of jumping into trial-and-error mode, changing diapers and searching for favorite Loveys. Teaching your baby to sign sets everyone up for better communication.

Another benefit is that learning sign language is in line with your infant’s physical development. Payne says the muscles in your baby’s arms and fingers develop faster than those in their mouth, throat, and nasal cavity, so they can sign long before they actually say their first words. Some folks believe that using sign language with babies can delay their verbal communication, but research has shown just the opposite. According to recent studies, it can actually facilitate rather than hinder the development of voice language, per The National Library of Medicine. As Payne sums it up, “language supports language.”

Since sign language is multisensory—communicating through seeing, hearing (saying the words you’re signing), and creating movements—it also nurtures your kid’s cognitive development. “Children feel their body moving and it allows for a multisensory approach, which helps them learn best,” says Payne. And if all that wasn’t enough, signing also helps to strengthen the bond between a child and their parents or caregivers.

What if your baby seems disinterested?

All children learn at a different pace, so if you feel your infant isn’t picking up the signs you’re putting down, don’t panic. There are a number of potential causes if you’re feeling discouraged, like maybe your baby just isn’t ready to start signing, or they’re already signing but you haven’t realized or aren’t positively reinforcing their attempts. These are important pieces of the puzzle to consider. When your baby does start to show interest, positive reinforcement is key to building their self-esteem, which encourages them to sign more. 

If you’re concerned about your baby’s ability to learn sign language, Payne suggests you seek out a professional for help. “Reaching out to an expert in the field can help parents and caregivers troubleshoot.”

When to wean your baby is an extremely personal decision, but if you feel like your time has come, read on to get a sense of how it’s done

Breastfeeding can be a magical experience for some, and the literal embodiment of “touched out” for others, but there comes a time in every lactating person’s journey when it’s time to say goodbye to the cuddles and cracked nipples and wean that baby. Maybe you’re about to head back to work and breastfeeding/chestfeeding isn’t an option anymore, or you might be past the recommended duration (six months, says the AAP) and just feel ready to give it up. Or maybe you hated every second of it so far and don’t want to do it anymore. And that’s fine! Everyone has their own unique experience, but when your time comes, how do you stop breastfeeding?

There are a few things to consider if you’re ready to wean, like if your baby has started solids yet, and whether you’re stopping before a year and switching to formula or after a year with no substitutions. Whatever the case, be sure to discuss your plan of action with your doctor or a certified lactation consultant. We spoke to a few lactation consultants to get a sense of what the process looks like so that you both have a smooth transition (because it’s an adjustment for you, too!).

How to stop breastfeeding

“Weaning a baby is very individual for each mother and baby or babies,” says Deedee Franke, a registered nurse and certified lactation consultant at Mercy Medical Center. “Before trying to wean, mom should make sure she’s physically and emotionally ready, assess how the baby may respond, and if the baby is under 1 year, make sure they can physically take a bottle and tolerate formula.”

In an ideal world, weaning is also a process, not a one-time event, explains Amy Peterson, IBCLC and lactation consultant for Evenflo. “As a baby breastfeeds less often over time, the milk supply begins to decrease and mom remains comfortable.” This helps avoid painful complications that come from stopping suddenly, like clogged ducts and mastitis.

As always, if your baby is suffering from discomfort related to reflux, starting solids, or teething, or if they’re sick, all bets are off and you can pick up where you left off once they’re back to normal. The same goes for times of major transition (like moving, starting a new daycare, or going through a big developmental milestone).

Interestingly enough, Peterson says that as soon as your baby takes their first bite of food, the weaning process naturally begins. “Over time, babies replace breastfeeding with other foods and drinks, and they replace the physical closeness of breastfeeding with other routines and forms of snuggling.”

How do you know when to stop breastfeeding?

When you stop breastfeeding is an extremely personal decision. The short answer is simply when you feel like you’re finished. If you’re exhausted and not getting any joy out of the process, then it could be time to consider weaning.

If you’re a little more flexible, Peterson says there’s a time when weaning can be more of a mutual decision between mom and baby. “When your baby begins eating more food, and breastfeeding dwindles to naps and nighttime, it could be a good time to start weaning.” But if a mom is struggling emotionally with breastfeeding or has come to resent it, it’s perfectly understandable to start the process earlier, she adds.

If you feel like you’re at this stage in your breastfeeding journey, here’s how to stop breastfeeding as seamlessly and painlessly as possible—for everyone involved.

How do you wean a baby gradually?

How you choose to wean is different for each parent, but experts agree that the best means to the end is a gradual process. This helps protect your breasts from painful complications and helps ease the emotional transition for both parties involved. Enlisting the help of a lactation consultant to cater a plan specifically to your needs is always a great option, but here are a few tried and true techniques for gradually weaning day feeding.

Drop one feed at a time:

Franke says, “In general, I would recommend dropping one feeding every three to four days and replacing it with a bottle.” Start with the feed your baby seems least interested in, and since your breasts are so enticing to your little nugget, see if someone else can do the bottle feed. Babies under a year need replacement feeds of formula or pumped breastmilk, whereas babies over a year who have a variety of foods and drinks are good to drop without replacing.

Once you’ve both settled into a new routine with one less breastfeeding session, move on to the next one and do it all over again, say the NHS. This gradual process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

Don’t offer, don’t refuse:

Another option, according to the La Leche League International (LLLI), is to practice the “don’t offer, don’t refuse” routine (this is best for older babies, as infants need to eat more regularly). This means you breastfeed your child when they ask, and don’t offer when they don’t ask. Whenever your breasts get uncomfortably engorged, express a bit of milk to take the edge off (but not enough to signal your body to produce more milk). Note that this method can take longer than dropping feeds over time.

Find new routines:

It’s always helpful to be proactive. Look at your daily routine and anticipate times you’d normally nurse that can be substituted with a bottle or something else—an activity, a snack, a visit from friends, or a walk in the park, to name a few. The LLLI also recommends enlisting help from someone else in your household to pitch in when baby would normally nurse (like first thing in the morning).

Shorten or postpone:

Lastly, you can try postponing sessions (they may get distracted and forget to ask again) or shortening the length of a feed—and Kelly Mom recommends making a game out of it. Tell your baby they can nurse until you’re done counting to 20 or singing their favorite song to help ease the transition.

How do you stop breastfeeding at night?

When your baby is around 4 to 6 months or 12 to 13 pounds, they are developmentally capable of sleeping through the night, according to What to Expect. This means they can snooze for up to an 8-hour stretch. Some parents try to stop middle-of-the-night feeds as soon as they can, while others find themselves night-weaning toddlers. Remember, every child is different and so is every family, so there’s no one-size-fits-all way to do it.

Drop feeds gradually:

In the same way you would with day weaning, it’s ideal to drop one feed at a time to slowly transition your breasts and avoid complications. When they feel uncomfortably full at night, express enough milk to take the edge off.

Load them up during the day:

If you’re still nursing during the day but weaning breastfeeding at night, minimize distractions during day feeds so your kid takes in more milk, and fill them up right before bedtime. They may be full enough from all the daytime milk to not need as much at night, says Kelly Mom. It’s also helpful to give your baby or toddler extra snuggles during the day (night nursing can be a way to get extra cuddles, so load them up when the sun’s out).

Send in backups:

Just like with daytime weaning, you can have someone else in your household take over nighttime feeds with the bottle, or have them go in just for comfort. Try shushing or rubbing baby’s back first to see if they’ll fall back asleep without milk; whenever you do feed a little who’s woken up in the night, keep it short and sweet.

Switch up your routine:

For older babies or toddlers who don’t need a solid feed before bed, try starting a new bedtime routine, says Kelly Mom. You can give them water if they’re thirsty and a snack if they’re hungry, rather than centering the routine around breastfeeding. Keep the cuddles plentiful and swap in a new book or song to make it feel fresh.

Try a dream feed:

Some parents find dream feeding helpful when night-weaning younger babies. This means quietly getting your sleeping baby a few hours after putting them down (around your bedtime) and feeding them in their dark room while they’re awake but still very drowsy, says Babycenter. This way, they’re more likely to fall asleep quickly when you put them back down, though this doesn’t work with all babies.

Since there are so many different ways to night wean, it’s helpful to contact your local lactation consultant for for a plan catered to your specific situation. “Weaning the night feeding depends a lot on the baby’s age and the expectations of the parents,” Franke says. She adds that every situation is different and it’s hard to give a set general guideline because there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to weaning nighttime breastfeeding. “I would suggest that a mom talk to a lactation consultant about her specific goals and expectations prior to planning and executing the plan.”

The La Leche League International website also offers a way to reach out to LLLI leaders in your area for advice and help. Additionally, Peterson recommends the book, Good Nights by Jay Gordon for more information about night weaning.

What are the risks if you don’t wean properly?

If you don’t wean properly, there are some risks involved for you and your breasts. “Overfull breasts can lead to plugged ducts, mastitis, and even abscesses,” Peterson says. “It is best to hand express or pump to relieve fullness—not enough to support milk supply, just to the point of comfort as needed.” And hopefully by using gradual weaning techniques, your breast milk will lessen and later dry up without pain or complications.

How long does it take for breast milk to dry up?

This varies from person to person. It generally takes a few weeks before your breasts stop feeling full and producing as much milk, but it can take much longer before there’s no milk at all—and that’s nothing to be concerned about. “Remnants of milk can linger for a year or more, noticed if mom’s hand expresses in the shower,” says Peterson. “This is totally normal.”

Is my child ready to wean?

Your child will make it pretty clear if weaning is moving too fast, they’re just not ready, or if now isn’t a good time, according to LLLI. You may notice more night wakings or daytime tantrums, new anxieties or fear of separation, clinginess, or regressive behaviors. In this case, take a break from weaning and try again in a little while, when your kid may feel more ready for the transition.

Even during a regular year, the end of summer and beginning of fall marks a big transition for a lot of families. Back to school is a big shift with routine changes and social-emotional adjustments. But this year, the back-to-school transition feels especially big. Our kids have been through so many wild changes, uncomfortable adjustments and uncharted territory—and so have we!

Given the inequities in access to education that surfaced over the past year and a half, many parents are also worried their children have fallen behind their peers. Whether your family has dealt with online learning from home, hybrid classes, a pod set up, going to school in a mask or all of the above, you’ve been through a seemingly constant stream of changes and adjustments. As fall approaches, we know they (and you!) may have some extra back-to-school jitters this year. We’re here to help!

As we talk with them and help them prepare their backpacks and other items for school, we can remind them that our love and connection travels with them, too.

Roleplaying scenarios like walking out the door, getting on the bus, and entering the school or classroom can be a great way for parents to help kids feel ready, and if they know they’re not just carrying their lunch and school supplies but also the love of their family and community, they’ll feel that much more courageous and secure.

Fostering Routines

Being prepared and establishing routines gives us another way to support our kids as they get ready for the back-to-school transition. We can support our kids through their big transitions by giving them predictability in their home routines, such as having dinner together, packing up their backpack for the next day, and preparing for bed. Having routines at home also supports our kids in understanding and practicing routines at school, as well.

We encourage you to come up with a unique way of sending off your little one before their big day. This special goodbye ritual can be another part of the routines that you create together. Is it a fist bump and a silly face? A big squeeze and a nose nuzzle? Get creative and make it yours, together!

Many teachers agree that school readiness is mostly based on social-emotional skills and less so on academic skills. When our kids have the emotional support and skills to cope with big feelings and big changes, they are well prepared to learn at school.

The pandemic left everyone missing family and friends, and none more so than grandparents. New research from Motel 6 has some interesting data on what the older generation plans on doing once it’s safe to travel again.

The survey was conducted via SWNS Media Group online among 2,000 U.S. grandparents. It found that most grandparents haven’t seen their grandchildren in person for over seven and a half months, with 59% spending less time in general as a result of the pandemic. What else did the survey find?

Once it’s safe to travel again, 56% of grandparents said their first trip will be to see their grandkids, with almost half of those already in the planning stages. Forty two percent also reported they’ve had a grandchild born since the start of the pandemic.

Despite the challenges of the last year, 59% of grandparents plan to spend more time with their grandchildren than ever before in the future.

As more and more Americans feel ready to travel again, we are thrilled to be able to take part in some of these much-needed family reunions,” said Rob Palleschi, CEO of G6 Hospitality. “We will continue to leave the light on for all guests, whether that be grandparents staying with Motel 6 on the way to visit family or as a way to socially distance and remain safe for upcoming family visits.”

While many parents start looking for a daycare as soon as they find out they are expecting some parents are delaying preschool or daycare and are choosing to start with a nanny. Before the age of two babies can get a great deal of social interaction from just their immediate family and a caregiver. Eventually, parents start to look at daycare to provide an opportunity to truly practice playing with others.

With the onset of COVID-19, many parents have been forced to delay their toddler’s entry into daycare or preschool. Also, with fewer in-person classes and storytimes available, toddlers are missing out on valuable opportunities to practice their social skills and interact with other kids their age.

A big concern for parents who are delaying preschool or daycare is that without the typically structured setting of a daycare or class their child is going to fall behind. However, there are things you can do at home with your child to help mimic some of the things they would learn at daycare. Practicing these things right now will help your child be more prepared when you do feel ready to send them.

Keep a Schedule or a Routine

Daycares tend to follow a routine or a schedule at all ages. This helps the child understand what to expect and not be taken by surprise when it’s time to end one activity and transition to the next. Parents can implement a similar routine at home. Every minute does not have to be planned out but having fixed times for meals, snacks, rest, and free play can help establish calm and order at home. It also helps kids gain independence as they begin to anticipate what’s next and take pride in knowing what to do next.

Practice Sharing

Let’s say you’re coloring with your toddler and he or she demands the red crayon. It can be easy to quickly hand it over to avoid a massive tantrum but that’s not going to teach your child how to interact with his or her peers. Instead, tell your child that you are still using it and will hand it over when you are done. Then take 10-15 seconds to finish up and give your child the crayon. They will start to learn how to ask and how to wait when someone is not done using an item they need.

Establish Mealtime Rules

It might be ok for your child to walk around the house with a snack in one hand and a favorite toy in another but at daycare, it’s expected that they sit down and eat nicely with others. Snack time and meal times are a chance to connect with others in a different way than they do when they play. Create a routine where you eat meals together at the table. Perhaps serve certain items family-style so that your toddler can help practice serving themselves and others. You can even infuse math into snacktime by helping your toddler count crackers or pretzels for both of you!

Encourage Independence

At daycare, your child will be one of several which means that they will not be able to ask the caregiver to do everything for them. Find ways to help your child become more independent. Here are a few skills to work on:

  • Can they take their shoes on and off or can they at least bring you their shoes and socks?
  • Can they put on their coats themselves? (Tip: Google “coat flip trick” for an easy way to teach this)
  • Can they throw out their own trash?
  • Do they help clean-up when it’s time to end an activity?
  • Do they help with chores like putting away laundry or wiping down a table?
  • Do they know how to ask for help?
  • Can they wash their hands with soap?

Practice Using Messy Materials

As a parent, we often avoid activities that have a high likelihood of making a mess. That includes things like glue, paint, glitter, markers, etc. While parents love receiving a homemade craft from their child they also love it when their child makes them at daycare and they don’t have to be the ones to clean-up. However, it’s important that you give your child plenty of opportunities to practice using messy materials. Learning how to use things like glue and scissors is an important milestone in childhood development. Teach your child how to make a mess responsibly by putting down a mat or using a tray to help contain the materials. Invest in a child-sized smock or keep an old large t-shirt handy when doing things like painting. Lastly, make sure you are not cleaning up alone. Your toddler will love the opportunity to wash brushes in the sink and sweep up sequins (warning: there is no magic vacuum that is able to pick up all the sequins).

Delaying preschool or daycare is a tough decision for any parent. But you shouldn’t focus too much on how much your child is missing right now due to COVID-19. Providing a safe and loving environment at home will help your child grow even without the presence of peers. Remember that most parents are going through the same thing as you so it’s likely that being around peers will be a new experience for many children. Lastly, children are incredibly adaptable and will quickly get up to speed when they do have the chance to be more social.

Last Sunday, I was super motivated to clean and organize all of the toys! I have really been wanting to do this before Christmas. Parents, do you ever get overwhelmed by all of the toys, clutter, and those pesky little broken pieces everywhere? 

I like cleanliness, organization and things just being put away. Of course, with three little boys, I have learned to live with it, their mess that is. The boys do put away toys every night before bed but they have not been organized and put in their proper place every time. (Plus, they have a Daddy who may be the messiest of them all…) So, I took four hours straight to get the toys where they needed to be and also many large piles of items to get rid of by either donating or just trash. We are donating baby toys and things in good condition that need a new home in order to make room for the new things that they may be getting for Christmas. We are trashing or recycling the broken things, the very old puzzles, and other items that have a million little pieces—half of which are missing. I am also trashing or donating any free and cheap things they got over the years that are never played with any longer such as happy meal toys.

I will share a lot of what I have done to get the toys in order but today I am concentrating on the organization of LEGOS specifically. Check out my Instagram page where I’ve saved everything in my stories under the highlight “Organization.”

It may seem very simple, just sort by color, but as a Mom to three LEGO-loving boys, I have learned a lot about precisely how to best keep them organized for good.

Here are my tips for parents helping to sort and store their children’s’ LEGOS.

  1. Assess what you have. Bring them all to one common area where you can look everything over and see all of it together.
  2. Find appropriate storage. We have a small tool organizer from Akro Mills. I highly recommend this one. It was Hunter’s favorite Christmas gift last year, not kidding! He is in 1st grade and loves organization like his Mama. We also have a tall stand-up drawer for larger completed pieces and all of the manuals that come with LEGO sets.
  3. When assessing and sorting, you just have to start somewhere. I took the biggest pieces out—things that were built or half-built and set them aside for the larger stand-up drawer.
  4. Next, sort by color. Start with what you have the most of. For us, it was black and gray. Ask for help here, Hunter (7) and Deacon (5, almost 6) were helpers. Wyatt (2) was not into it. Many hands make light work!
  5. Also, make separate piles for things that are not LEGOS bricks such as LEGO people, windows/doors, windshields, tires, and so forth. These things can have their own drawer.
  6. Do not waste your time taking pieces apart. Some things have 5-10 small Legos put together. This may be something they are working on and so I just put it in the color drawer that it is mostly.
  7. Now you can pull out the drawers and put them on the floor or table when ready to play. Keep the built pieces in the larger storage container and then encourage them to sort and clean up when done with the LEGOS for the day. Eventually, they will get into the habit and will be doing this on their own.
  8. Use the LEGO plates for building! This will help to keep what they are building and so it won’t break or get destroyed. (LEGO plates can be pricey but also make a great Christmas gift.) I do not personally recommend off-brand, it is a different quality.
  9. This will be a constant job but it will help in the end. My boys are so happy to have it organized because it helps them to play and build more easily for years to come.
  10. This is not for 3-year-olds (or younger). Wyatt is ready to destroy everything I have done. It won’t be worth your time and energy for them to just dump out all of the nicely organized containers. If you have a young one, keep your older kids’ nicely organized LEGOS out of their reach!

Anyway, I bet you never knew so much went into keeping LEGOS! But when you are a Mom to three boys who happen to all love building, you learn a few things along the way. I remember spending countless hours with my brother and friends at our babysitters playing with LEGOS, just building for hours upon hours. Our family loves them so much and is a great break from screen time and especially in the wintertime when they may not be able to play outdoors. Getting organized now will help you to feel ready for all of those holiday and Christmas gifts!

What is a birth plan? It’s the foundation for the birth experience you want to have, with steps laid out to help you get there. Of course, labor and delivery don’t always go as expected. But having a plan you’ve shared it with your birthing team makes the unexpected much more manageable. Read on for four steps on writing a birth plan to help you get ready, and feel ready, for the big day.

1. Do your research.
Before you start drafting your birth plan, figure out your options. Talk to your mom friends, read books, and try to visualize what your dream birth experience looks like to you. During this step, you'll want to consider things like:

  • who you'll want in the birthing room with you
  • your preferred style of birthing or position
  • how you'd like to manage pain
  • options for Cesarian birth
  • what you'd like to happen in case of an emergency

Each of these components is a very personal choices, and knowing all of your options is crucial to making the best choice for you.

2. Make your birth plan clear and concise.
The last thing you'll want to do while you're in labor is have to explain yourself. That's the main reason you've created a birth plan. As with any good plan, it needs to cater the person reading it. Your doctor or midwife, partner and labor and delivery nurses should not have to guess what you mean. Make sure they can quickly and easily understand your vision and what you want at different times throughout your entire experience. Keep your plan to one page and use these topics as a birth guide template:

  • requests before birth
  • requests during labor and delivery
  • vaginal vs. C-section birth preferences
  • requests for newborn care

3. Share and discuss your plan by your 34th week.
Discuss your plan with your partner and doctor or midwife by your 34th week of pregnancy. This step allows you to confirm that what you'd like to happen is doable and that your team is all on the same page. Print out at least four copies: one for your doctor or midwife, one that stays with your partner, one for the birthing center and one for your hospital bag.

4. Be flexible.
No matter how much you've planned and written about what you'd like to happen during labor and delivery, things might not go as expected. In some ways, the flexibility you'll need to embrace during this time is the best preparation for parenthood. Check in with yourself and your breath and be compassionate to yourself during childbirth. We love this mom's story and declaration that a failed birth plan does not make you a failed mom.

I have always thought in terms of possibilities. When I was younger, I used a coke bottle and filled it with ideas and goals I wanted to achieve. When I started my company, Bold New Girls, I set up a binder filled with blank paper, calling it my “binder of possibilities.” I spent time each day creating my dream job. Combined, these ideas convinced me that focusing on potential generated positive emotions and energy as well as momentum.

These experiences now help me teach both girls and boys that amidst uncertainty and change, they, too, can focus on opportunity. Positive psychology tells us that by focusing on the positive aspects of any event (losing a friend or adjusting to a new school routine), expressing gratitude for the highlights of your day, or using the language of strength such as, “I am so proud of myself for…”, one can feel more positive, hopeful, and even motivated to keep trying. I couldn’t agree more.

No doubt back to school is looking different than previous ones. Kids will likely be placed in learning pods in a new quarter system, encouraged to wear masks and frequently use hand sanitizer, and asked to practice the essential social distancing. Perhaps they won’t get to see all their friends as often, participate in as many after school activities, or feel the security of familiarity.

Even still, they can learn to embrace this time as a time of possibility. Here’s how parents can help:

1. Prepare your kids for what back to school means. This is two-fold—talk to them about what this could look like by painting the picture of possibilities—both the positives and challenges. Ask them what they are thinking, expecting, and wondering about. This fosters connection and conversation. Also, prepare them with their own supplies: mask, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and tissues. Help them take ownership of their cleaning items and feel ready to do their part. The possibility of being prepared can help them feel in control and powerful.

2. Normalize this experience. It’s not to say a global pandemic “normal” in any means but it is the “new normal” that we are all navigating together. Knowing everyone is facing the same worries and transition does help. Together, watch videos and scroll through Instagram to see everyone—every day people and celebrities alike—wearing masks and socializing in new and creative ways. The possibility of normalcy and the “we’re all in this together” feeling, can help kids feel calm and secure.

3. Talk to them about their “what if’s.”  “What if we go back to lock down?” and “What if I face pressure to deviate from the COVID protocols?” or “What if I or someone I know contracts the virus?” These are all legitimate fears. Ask this key question, “Then what?” and explore some action steps for each concern—both the best-case and worst-case scenarios—so they gain balanced thinking. Remind them how much they have had to deal with so far and how these life experiences have already fostered resilience. Talking it out beforehand can alleviate their stresses and know they have a plan in place to rely on.

At the same time, talk to them about the possibility of how this return to school, though admittedly different, could be even better than returns prior. How? I don’t know entirely but I do know some of my clients have told me they like smaller classes (more teacher attention, less worry about peer judgment), they appreciate the rooms being cleaner (really) and it feels good to know they are helping flatten the curve and doing their best to protect everyone’s health and safety. They also enjoy a less busy schedule (where they have more downtime, playtime, and time to relax). The possibility of “even better” provides the possibility that a new way of being is different and, potentially, improved.

Yes, back to school is coming. We know this. What we don’t know is what it will be like. Why? This is because there are still questions and uncertainties. Yet, these unprecedented times can teach us about possibility and may prove to be a fabulous opportunity for kids and parents alike to grow.
