While the holidays might have made a magical start to winter, your family is probably climbing the walls with cabin fever by now. A change of scenery can do wonders to shake off seasonal blues. Make incredible vacation memories, even in the cold. Here are ten spots for snow and ice adventures—no meltdowns (almost) guaranteed.
Dog Sled and Dine in a Yurt in Big Sky, Montana
Watch your family’s spirits soar in Big Sky, Montana where snow-kissed mountains awaken a sense of adventure. Skiing is the name of the game at Big Sky Resort, the third-largest ski resort in North America, but you can also book a dog sledding adventure and share a candle-lit dinner in a backcountry yurt. Strap up a team of excited Alaskan huskies and mush through the mountains with Spirit of the North Sled Dog. Ride a snowcat up Lone Peak to a wood stove-warmed Montana Dinner Yurt. Your bellies will be cozy too, full of cheesy French onion soup, tender filet mignon, and Toblerone chocolate fondue. Live music accompanies the dinner, plus you and the kids will have a ball sledding in the torch-lit evening snow.
Most roads in Yellowstone National Park are closed to car traffic from mid-December to mid-March, but you can zoom around the scenic landscape via snowmobile or snow coach. Sign up for a guided tour with Two Top Snowmobile Rental and spend the day gliding around the Old Faithful Geyser Basin or Grand Canyon of Yellowstone (December 15, 2022-February 28, 2023). Feel the snowy breeze on your face as you ride a single or double Ski-Doo past bubbling paint pots, herds of bison, and other natural wonders in the quietest time to visit the park. Full-day guided tours provide all the gear and park knowledge to allow you to fully geek out. Depart out of West Yellowstone, not from Big Sky and Bozeman, in a group of up to nine sleds.
Sleep in an Ice Hotel in Quebec City, Canada
Cortney Fries
If you’ve daydreamed about snoozing in an ice hotel, you don’t have to go as far as Sweden to make your icy visions a reality! Hotel de Glace is an unforgettable overnight experience outside of Quebec City, Canada. Each winter, a new ice hotel is built with a unique theme. When I stayed, it was a circus motif with carvings of juggling bears and jesters. There’s a slide, ice bar, hot tubs, and a sauna under the stars. Snuggle up in a cold weather sleeping bag and get some zzz’s on an ice bed in an igloo room. During the day, snow tube at the largest winter playground in North America at Village Vacances Valcartier (the on-site hotel), splash in the indoor water park, or play Pac-Man at the arcade.
Luge, Sled, and Ski in All-Inclusive Club Med Charlevoix, Canada
Club Med Quebec
The first mountain Club Med in Canada, the Charlevoix location opened outside of Quebec in December 2021. It’s like skiing on a bicycle, which might be an interesting alternative for those who are nervous about skiing or open to trying a different way to glide down the mountain. New this year, Cosmic Tubing is available Thursdays through Saturdays 5-7 p.m. Neon lights brighten the night as you and your family slide down the track. You can also ski and snowboard, tour via snowcat or snowshoe, ice skate, indulge in mountaintop après, and do sun salutations in mountain yoga.
Celebrate at Great Northern Festival in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Meet Minneapolis
Minnesotans know how to embrace the cold. Join them in one of the world’s best winter festivals, the Great Northern January 25-February 5, 2023. The U.S. Pond Hockey Championships and St. Paul Winter Carnival are part of the festival, which gives snow and ice center stage. Kids can race through 2-miles of winter obstacles in the Kidarod, an event inspired by Alaska’s dog sled race. Then warm your hands and hearts with indoor performances of music and dance. Interactive public art exhibits educate us on climate change, reminding us why low temperatures are important too.
Extreme Sled and Fat Tire Bike in Breckenridge, Colorado
PC: Breckenridge Tourism Office
Families flock to Breckenridge, Colorado for Rocky Mountain ski resorts and small-town vibes. This former mining town boasts killer slopes for skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and hiking. Have you heard of extreme sledding? Soar down Country Boy Mine’s high-speed sledding track. It’s over a half-mile long with twists and turns that will slather a smile across everyone’s faces. Don’t worry, a sleigh or snowcat will bring you back up to the top for three more runs. You can also tour the mine and pan for gold. Fat tire biking is an excellent winter challenge for those looking to try something new. Be warned, it takes some effort to balance on slippery snow trails but it can be rewarding for those that get the hang of it. It’s best to try fat tire biking with a guide, such as one from Breckenridge Gold Run Nordic Center.
Ice Skate, Ski, and Snowshoe at Yosemite National Park
Aramark Destinations
Winter is an especially serene time to visit Yosemite National Park. Be surrounded by Giant Sequoias, massive cliffs, and frosty waterfalls. Feel like you’re in a snow globe as you skate around Curry Village Ice Rink. Drink in views of Half Dome as you glide across the ice, then warm up with s’mores around outdoor fire pits. Ski at the family-friendly Badger Pass Ski Area or take a guided snowshoe hike. The wintery weather reduces the number of visitors, but the temperatures should still be around 50 degrees with sunny skies.
Watch a Fire & Ice Show or Walk Through an Immersive Light Show in Whistler, Canada

With virtual reality, mini-golf, foosball, and a racetrack, Norwegian Prima is a tween and teen dream ship
When you step aboard the Norwegian Prima, you instantly feel the effort and care that went into launching the newest member of Norwegian’s fleet. Boasting a luxurious and thoughtful design, passengers can sit back and enjoy some of the finest food and entertainment the high seas can offer. From virtual reality to waterslides and a three-level racetrack, the Prima is ideal for people looking for a cruise with older kids. We had the chance to experience one of the first cruises aboard the Prima and want to share everything we know.
“When we launched Norwegian Prima, we aimed at going beyond expectations, providing our guests with more wide-open spaces, elevated service, thoughtful design, and a variety of unforgettable experiences, and this latest unveiling of our entertainment and onboard activities lineup is going to have the wow-factor they’ve yearned for in a much-anticipated cruise vacation,” says Harry Sommer, President, and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line.
Details about the Norwegian Prima
Norwegian Cruise Line
The Prima is 965 feet long, hosts 3,100 guests, and has an impressive range of suites available to book. Choose between a suite with a view; the club balcony suite, which has more room and is perfect for families; a balcony room; an oceanview room; or an inside or studio. The Haven, Prima’s exclusive enclave, has its restaurants, pool, 24-hour butler, private elevators, and 107 spacious suites. For the first time, the re-imagined Haven has the first three-bedroom suite offered on a Norwegian cruise ship. The Oceanwalk is Norwegian’s first-ever glass walkway at sea, and the Concourse has several pieces of interactive artwork.
Activities on the Norwegian Prima
Gabby Cullen
While there is a splash zone for little kids, we were impressed with all the activities that older kids and teens would enjoy more.
The Prima Speedway According to this writer, this racetrack is one of the best attractions on the ship. Once strapped in safely (wear closed-toed shoes!), you’ll race opponents around three levels at the top of the Prima. Be on the lookout for other guests with booster guns. If they “hit” your car, you’ll get a speed boost to help you race past others! Since there is a height requirement, this one is primarily for teens and adults.
Tee Time This interactive mini-golf course has nine holes and has a fun retro vibe with a “drive-thru,” flamingos, a microphone, and giant dice.
The Bull’s Eye Designed with a lounge vibe, complete with comfy sofas, you can easily spend a few hours hanging out at one of the dart boards that come with a modern tech upgrade. Choose from many different dart games (some we didn’t know), and be ready for snarky but hilarious comments from the game if your throw is less than stellar.
The Stadium Here is where you’ll find active games like shuffleboard, ping pong, pickleball, foosball, and more. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon at sea.
The Drop, the Rush, and the Wave These 10-story tall slides are perfect for thrill-seekers! The Drop is a free-fall slide, and the Rush is a dual slide, so be sure to challenge a family member to a race. If you want water fun, try the Wave, the tidal wave slide on Deck 19.
Galaxy Pavillion From the flying theater to the Top Golf simulator, the Galaxy Pavilion is a must. There are 13 VR games and an escape room. Insider Tip: This is one of the Cruise Director’s favorite places on the Prima!
Dining Aboard the Norwegian Prima
Gabby Cullen
Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its exceptional dining experiences, and the Prima takes that experience to the next level.
Hudson’s and the Commodore Room In these main dining rooms, you’ll find a completely re-vamped menu that, in 2023, will roll out to other ships. The fixed menu focuses on preparing fewer menu items with higher quality and execution and includes globally-inspired dishes, vegetarian options, and a make-your-own pasta option where guests can choose their pasta style, sauce, and ingredients for a unique meal all their own.
Indulge Food Hall This completely new concept has never been done on a cruise ship. There are 11 different stalls in the food hall, ranging from Indian to Italian to Texas BBQ. Settle in at a table in the middle of the space and browse the available tablet to order your food. The chicken tikka masala and lamb chops were favorites, as well as shrimp Pad Thai, tuna tostadas, and French onion soup.
While you can eat here at all three meals, there are different menus at each time. There is also a Starbucks and a dessert stall, but these are not complimentary dining options.
Surfside Cafe & Grill At this buffet-style dining experience, you’ll find not only kid favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs, and french fries but also a new wood-burning pizza oven, grilled veggies, a pasta station, a salad bar, and fresh seafood options.
The Local Bar & Grill You’ll find classic pub-style menu options at this favorite hangout, and it’s open 24-7! Think omelets, breakfast sandwiches, cobb salads, fish and chips, chicken sandwiches, cheeseburgers, chicken wings, pretzel bites, and more.
Specialty Dining Palomar is Norwegian’s first Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and serves items like lobster, oysters, filet mignon, tableside fish, and more. At Food Republic, you can share plates like shrimp, lettuce wraps, pork belly dumplings, and beef skewers. Onda by Scarpetta is where you’ll find classics like spaghetti and ravioli offered alongside mezzelune and tagliatelle, followed by options like salmon, steak, and roasted chicken.
Los Lobos offers tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, chile Rellenos and more. The romantic vibe of Le Bistro French paired with wonderful meal items such as Coq Au Vin, sea bass, and lobster Thermador, is ideal for a parent's night out. For a classic steakhouse experience, Cagney's is still serving up the grilled classic like the rib eye, the filet mignon, and a New York strip, with tempting sides such as potatoes au gratin, garlic mushrooms, and parmesan-dusted truffle fries. Asian cuisine can be found at Hasuki, which is Norwegian's new teppanyaki-style experience, and Nama Sushi.
Entertainment on the Norwegian Prima
Gabby Cullen
The Norwegian Prima Theater is where much of the nightly entertainment happens. With seating for 750 guests, an LED video wall, and a vibe that appeals to ages across the board, guests will go from a Broadway show to a nightclub all on the same night. As Norwegian Cruise Line Entertainment Director Julie Valeriote says "We want the experience to begin when you enter the venue." Other live entertainment can be found at Syd's Pour House and other hidden gems on board the Prima.
Noise Boys Get ready to be wowed by the talent here! Straight from the Edinburg Fringe Festival, this incredible show is filled with tap dancing, award-winning beatboxing, and a hip, urban vibe that'll appeal to ages young and old.
Summer: The Donna Summer Musical Experience the same Tony-nominated Broadway musical found in New York, you'll find yourself dancing along to the disco icon's greatest hits on the high seas.
The Price Is Right Live That's right, guests will have the chance to compete on the legendary game show right on the Norwegian Prima! Will you get to spin the wheel and head for the Showcase Showdown?
Improv at Sea If comedy is your jam, this is for you. Laugh with your fellow guests at intimate stand-up shows.
Live Music at Syd's Pour House Each Norwegian cruise ship has a signature concept when it comes to live music, but what is the same across the board is the intimate, hidden gem vibe of each show. You might hear classic covers, rock music, or other fun music genres that'll have you leaving like you discovered the next big band.

Chances are you are familiar with the iconic peachy-pink buildings that make up Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas. But did you know that this Caribbean spot is just a short flight from the U.S. and is totally kid-friendly? It has one of the best waterparks we’ve ever seen, the food is top-notch (hello, Nobu!) and there’s so much for families to do both at the resort and in nearby Nassau. Here’s what you’ll discover when you visit Atlantis (and book now to get your 4th night free!).

The Waterpark Will Blow You Away
Get ready to spend all your time in the water when you visit Atlantis. Set up your gear on a lounge chair and snag a double tube to cruise around the rapids river at Aquaventure. This waterpark is just outside your door if you stay at The Royal (this is where we recommend you stay as it is the most centrally located building on property) and just a short walk from the rest of the resort’s buildings.
Look for the Mayan Temple if you want some waterslide action. There’s even one waterslide where you and your bestie can hop aboard a double tube, head down the waterslide and end up in a tunnel with sharks (well, not WITH sharks, they’re just on the other side of the plexiglass, thank goodness)!
Kate Loweth
With 11 pools to choose from, you’ll definitely find one that suits your family’s needs. Little ones will want to check out Splashers, the Mayan-themed water playground full of sprayers, dump buckets, mini waterslides and more.
Access to Aquaventure is included for guests of Atlantis. Snag your wristband when you start your day. There are lockers you can rent closer to the beach area and towel stands all over. Plus, food is available poolside and there’s even a Starbucks for those early morning pool visits.

5 Miles of Beaches Surround Atlantis Paradise Island
If you want some relaxation time after a day at the waterpark, head to the beach. You can snag a lounge chair and set the kids up with some buckets and shovels and everyone will be content. There are protected coves that keep the waves at bay and are they perfect for little ones.

Dining Options Are Plentiful and Excellent
Whether you want to go casual or totally upscale, Atlantis has a dining option for you. You can even add on a dining plan if you want to make it easier on yourself during your stay. Bonus: kids 6 and under are free on the dining plan with a paying adult.
Here are our recommendations for dining while at Atlantis:
Olives: This is a great spot for families with lots of kid-friendly options like pizza and pasta. You’ll love the focaccia and the whole fish is not to be missed.
Carmine’s: Italian food that’s perfect for sharing is the name of the game at this kid-friendly spot.
Fish by José Andrés: Located in The Cove, this spot was our favorite for its bright and welcoming ambiance and delicious offerings. While it’s definitely more upscale, we saw many families dining here. Start your meal off right with the hush puppies and then try one of the different preparations of conch, a Bahamian specialty.
Seafire Steakhouse: This is another family favorite for when you want a meal that everyone will enjoy. We found the service to be attentive and the food, delicious. Go for the surf and turf with the Bahamian lobster tail and filet mignon if you want to best of both worlds.
Nobu: Japanese cuisine is the name of the game at this spot that should be saved for a night when someone else will watch the kids (more on that below). Go for the tasting menu if your appetite allows or order up a selection of nigiri and maki for the table to share.
Quick tip: If you plan to dine at these are any of the other restaurants during your stay, you’ll want to book your reservations before you arrive as they do get busy.

Where to Stay at Atlantis Paradise Island
We definitely recommend booking your rooms in The Royal when you visit Atlantis Paradise Island. They are the towers that flank the bridge suite that’s often referred to as the “Michael Jackson suite.” These rooms are all undergoing renovation (East Tower to be completed summer 2022 followed closely by the West Tower) and we found them to be bright and airy. Rooms come with a mini fridge and coffee maker to get your day off to the right start.
The Royal has the best location for waterpark access. You can also visit the aquarium and casino in these buildings.
Quick tip:Book now and you’ll snag your 4th night free, an amazing savings!

Atlantis Kids Adventure: The Kids Club of Your Dreams
Looking for some adult time while you are at Atlantis Paradise Island? Book the kids (ages 3-12) into the Atlantis Kids Adventure kids club for the afternoon or evening session and they will be thrilled to participate in culinary activities, outdoor games, art and so much more. You can add on dinner to the evening session so you don’t have to worry about feeding the kids before you head to Nobu.
Quick tip: Your kids can even become mermaids and mermen for a day at the Mermaid Adventures/Camp.
Atlantis Paradise Island
Animal Encounters Are Around Every Corner
The kids are going to love spotting all of the animals that make their home at Atlantis from the hammerheads to the sea turtles. You’ll find animal feedings and creature talks throughout your stay so be sure to make note of those times if that interests you. In the lobby of The Royal, you’ll find an aquarium with sunken treasure (you can even book some snorkel time here).
Dolphin Cay is where you’ll find some real hands-on encounters from dolphin experiences to swimming with sea lions. When you book an activity here, you’ll learn all about how the property took in 17 stranded dolphins and 10 sea lions whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and since then has become a safe haven for injured animals (many of which are released after being rehabilitated). Check out the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation page for more info on all that Atlantis is doing to protect our oceans.

A Visit to Nearby Nassau Is Just a $5 Ferry Ride Away
Want to see a little more of The Bahamas while you are there? There’s an easy way to get from Atlantis over to Nassau and that’s via the $5 ferry. Get the resort shuttle to take you over to the Harborside Resort and you can take a short walk over to where you can catch the ferry to Nassau. It seemed to run about every 30 minutes (island time, of course) and it drops you off near Señor Frogs in Nassau after a 15-minute ride.
Walk around the downtown area and stop by the Straw Market for some haggling over souvenirs. The Pirate Museum is another fun spot for families to visit. Restaurants are plentiful and you can catch the ferry back when you are done (just be sure to ask the time of the last ferry so you don’t miss it).

Tips for Visiting Atlantis Paradise Island with Kids
Download the Atlantis app to make it easier to navigate the massive property before you get your bearings.
Need some extra-special guidance to make your Atlantis vacation the best? Head to The Coral to chat with the Kids Concierge. They can help with making reservations, hooking you up with a daily itinerary, providing you with kids’ menus and so much more.
There are many different options for where to stay at Atlantis. We recommend booking your room in The Royal as it puts you most centrally located and close to the waterpark action. If your crew includes really little ones, The Coral could be a good option for you as it has a lower-key water area right nearby.
Bring your watershoes and plan to wear them at Aquaventure. The ground heats up as the day goes on and you’ll be thankful you have them. Goggles and a beach bag are a good idea too.
Book your dinner reservations in advance to ensure you get dining times that work for your family.
There are gift shops at The Royal and at Harborside Resort if you forget your sunscreen or other necessities. The one at the Harborside Resort also sells alcohol.
A cab from the airport to the resort will run you around $45.

Powell Butte Hike around a giant extinct volcano at this park in the city limits! Powell Butte is a beautiful place for a hike, with wooded paths, meadows, and perfect views of surrounding peaks on clear days. Starting at the small visitor center kiosk it’s an easy trek to the top on the paved path. There you’ll find a viewing platform pointing out the nine different mountains encircling you, including Mount Jefferson, Adams, St. Helens, and even Rainier. From there, you can follow the hiking trails around the back of the park into the forests or turn around and wind through the grassy meadows instead. The summit is a 0.7 mile hike, and the whole loop is about 2.9 miles. Spring sees wildflowers galore on the hills, and with them comes the buzz of bees and flutter of butterflies.
Hoyt Arboretum Trails Try to count how many different trees you can find in Hoyt Arboretum, we dare you! With 2300 species and over 12 miles of trails, it’s quite the challenge. Whether you can count that high or not, you’ll find plenty of easy hikes on the hills near the Oregon Zoo and Children’s Museum. There’s something for every time of year– in spring, find the 0.3 mile Magnolia Trail between Wildwood and Oak Trails for a great view of the flowering trees. There’s also cherry blossoms, dogwood flowers, and Japanese snow-bells. Don’t forget to look down for early trilliums!
Start your visit in the parking lot (it’s a pay lot, avoid the hunt and cost by taking the Max or even biking), then head to the trails. The visitor’s center is closed while Shelter in Place rules are enacted.
Take mom out for a picnic breakfast, lunch or dinner. Portland has an abundance of gorgeous green spaces perfect for celebrating mom. Try one of these.
Forest Park One of the largest urban forests in the U.S., Forest Park has over 5,200 acres for you picnic in. Mom and the little ones can stretch their legs. Head up the hill on Firelane #13. It’s a bit of a trek (~2 miles), but worth it to enjoy a beautiful vista of the Willamette River from your own private, hilltop picnic table. If you have older kids who think they are over “the picnic thing”, challenge them to eat their lunch among the ghosts in the spooky Witch’s Castle. Or, take your wicker basket up to the Pittock Mansion and go on a trek back in time. Built in 1914, it sits on a rise with an incredible view of the city. You can spread your blanket on their broad lawn anytime. Free admission, and kid friendly!
Washington Park Portland is a wealthy city when it comes to parks, so there are plenty to choose from for your al fresco dining pleasure. Parks and Rec even has a handy park finder tool on their website. But, no matter how many little boxes you check, you won’t find a park with more options than Washington Park; even when it comes to picnic spots! Tucked between Hwy 26 and West Burnside, Washington Park offers enough interesting picnic spots to keep you “eating out” all summer. If your kids want to get close to wild animals, check out the Oregon Zoo. Settle down in the shade at Hoyt Arboretum for a peaceful meal, while your kids frolic amongst the Dawn Redwoods. Or, go ahead and smell the roses at the International Rose Test Garden.
Rocky Butte Park This local treasure is considered a bit of a hidden gem and offers beautiful views of the city. Located along Interstate 205, Rocky butte can be scaled by car on a road winds its way about a mile uphill. Joseph Wood Hill Park is located at the very top. This park, is a perfect place to perch and enjoy bites while taking in the sites but getting to it is half the fun as the ride offers beautiful views and a trip through a historic tunnel that will thrill the younger set.
Once you arrive at the top, the park is made up of 2.38 acres of flat park area that is home to rock walls and beautiful historic lamp posts. The western side of the park provides views to downtown Portland, and on a clear day you can see St. Johns Bridge and the West Hills. On the Northwest side, you and your little picnickers can see Portland International Airport and enjoy the air show as the planes take off and land right in front of you. And to the East, you can see the stunning Cascade Mountain Range.
This sweet spot gives you the option of a different dining experience every time you visit. Try to visit on a clear day for best views, because there is plenty to view as far as the eye can see, while you eat.

You’ve planned your budget for the year and clipped your coupons, and now you’re wondering—what’s next when it comes to saving a buck? We know life can get expensive, so we found 20 ways to put cash back into your wallet. From ditching the plastic water bottle to packing your own snacks, here’s how to save up to $5 a day, starting now.
1. Cancel subscriptions you don't use. You can use a service like Trim to automatically detect subscription charges and easily save up to $5 per day by canceling music, audiobook and tv streaming services, beauty boxes, magazine or newspaper subscriptions, water delivery services, etc.
2. Get a reusable water bottle. On average, a bottle of water costs around $1.50 (or more if you don't buy in bulk!). If you drink three or four a day, that's over $5 a day. Get an insulated water bottle, and start filling up on your own. Not only will you see immediate savings, but you'll help prevent plastic bottles from filling landfills and polluting oceans.
3. Look for free or cheap entertainment. There are plenty of ways to save while out and about with the kids. Take advantage of your zoo or museum membership, go to a park, hit up the library, look for free festivals and more.
4. Don't make expensive meals. Do your kids love seafood or filet mignon? Yeah, save those recipes for special occasions. Instead, use ingredients that'll give you more bang for your buck. For example, these dinner ideas each cost $15 or less. For a family of four or more, that's $5 back in the bank every time you cook.
5. Eliminate one convenient thing from your routine. We know you'd rather send your clothes the dry cleaner than handwash them, and of course, a salon pedicure is always a treat, but eliminating these small items and doing the tasks at home, even once in a while, is guaranteed to save you money.
6. Pack your snacks. Whether you're at the park or the office, bring snacks from home with you, so you don't have to dole out dollars for overpriced packaged items (especially when you're at theme parks or other places that charge a small fortune for food).
8. Stay out of Target/Walmart/Costco. It's a given that the more often you wander the aisles of your favorite bulk store, the more often you'll end up with stuff you don't need. Try going once every other week. We guarantee your wallet will see the difference.
9. Go to your own bank's ATM. If you hit up a cash machine that isn't your bank, you'll get hit with a fee (sometimes it's almost $4!), plus, your bank charges you too. If you need cash, plan and stop by your bank.
10. Let those items sit in your shopping cart for one more day. We've all been guilty of loading up our online shopping carts with more than we need. If you hang tight for a day or two, it's a good chance you might decide against a few items.
11. Look for free workouts or work out at home. Sign up for the newsletters and subscribe to the Facebook pages of your favorite studios. They often offer promotions for new clients and discounts for bringing a friend. Or, check out some of our favorite (and free) 15-minute workouts for busy parents.
12. Bike/walk/take the bus to school/work. You'll save big on gas if you can bike to school (or work). If you don't live close enough to bike in, carpool with neighbors (or put your kids on the bus) and co-workers so you don't have to fuel up your car as often—and you'll also get to use the carpool lane––it's a win-win.
13. Make stuff in bulk.Make-ahead meals are as popular as ever, for both the time it saves on a busy weeknight and the budget-friendly portions you'll have in the freezer.
14. Shop without the kids. If you can, it's better to shop sans kids, who tend to toss unwanted items into the cart and make us all veer off course to spend money on things we don't want (or need) to buy.
15. Join your local Buy Nothing Facebook Group. Most neighborhoods now have a dedicated "Buy Nothing" group on Facebook. It's free and easy to join, and you can score serious deals by scrolling through the posts highlighting what other members are giving away. If there's no Buy Nothing group in your area, arrange a clothing swap with your friends.

16. Only shop for one week's worth of food at a time. Finance guru Tony Steuer suggests to "make a weekly menu and purchase only food you need. The average American household throws away over $2,000 of food each year, which besides being wasteful, is a lot of money. This works out to just over $6 a day."
17. Stash your cash. Whenever you pay in cash and get a $5 bill as change, stash it in a safe place. Cash tends to just disappear from our wallets, so you won't miss this money by putting it aside... and it will add up quickly!
18. Only eat out on discount nights. Lots of restaurants offer Kids Eat Free with an adult entree or a Taco Tuesday special.
19. Adjust your tax withholdings. If you claim more on your W-4, you'll get more back in your paycheck. From there, divert the savings into a high-yield savings account.

Read on for Seattle restaurants that are sure to enthrall, engage and delight, while also serving up a great meal.
Vault 177 & Spin Alley Bowling
Kathryn Mueller
Vault 177 is tucked away in the heart of Richmond Beach, a scenic little neighborhood. The restaurant opened in 2020 and boasts a food and craft beverage menu that will delight all ages. The waffle fries alone are a reason to check this spot out. They offer chicken fingers, hamburgers, pizza and more for kiddos. For adults, they offer a wide selection of 32 beers on tap. As for entertainment, the restaurant is adjacent to a large bowling alley, Spin Alley Bowling. Families can dine at Vault 177 or order food to enjoy at the lanes. They also have video games, darts, pool tables and lots of vending machines for your tiny trinket collectors. The best time to stop by is on Saturdays, from 3-5 p.m. for cosmic bowling. The lights are turned down, the music is turned up and the disco ball comes out. Looking for an after dinner excursion? Richmond Beach is only about a mile down the road. If you want to see beautiful water views and spend some time at the beach, you've come to the right quaint neighborhood.
Insider tips: Pack some quarters for this outing. We doubt you’ll make it out of there without a sticker or small plastic figurine, especially if you’re going with toddlers. They offer bowling aids for little ones, and they have tiny bowling shoes for tiny feet.

Located in Miner’s Landing on Pier 57, you'll find the Crab Pot, a casual restaurant that specializes in seafood. Be prepared to adorn a bib, grab a mallet and have fun breaking open seafood dumped directly on the table. It’s a great way to get a little messy and enjoy a meal as a family (one you don’t have to worry about cleaning up). The restaurant features waterfront views and an outdoor patio that' hard to beat when the weather is nice. After dinner, be sure to check out all the arcade games and adventures Miner’s Landing has to offer. Good to know:The Seattle Aquarium is a short walk away. You can make a day out of your next touristy trip to the waterfront and stop by to say hi to the seals and otters.
Insider tip: Parking can be a bit of challenge downtown. Our tip is to park in the covered parking garage by Pike Place and walk over. There is a lot of construction on Alaskan Way, so give yourself some grace navigating the noise and flaggers, and aim for a weekday if you want to beat the crowds.
Dinner and a show are exactly what you’ll get when you go to Tokyo Japanese Steak House in Woodinville. Take a break from doing the cooking, and let their chefs take over. In fact, all prep and cooking are done right in front of you. They entertain with spinning utensils, flaming onions and lots of jokes. The best part is your kiddo will be so entertained there’s no need to pack the iPads to keep them from melting down in the middle of a meal. At Tokyo Japanese Steak House their goal is to leave guests wowed and full, so sit back and enjoy the show—just don’t get too close to the flames! Kids menu items are available for those 10 and under and come with soup, salad, vegetables and steamed rice. Choose from a wide array of meats–chicken, steak, shrimp, salmon, scallop or filet mignon.
Insider tip: If it’s your birthday, be sure to mention it’s your special day—they’ll help you celebrate. We hear there is cheesecake involved.

There is so much to take in from the moment you step inside. They have a revolving bar of sushi that brings endless options of fresh rolls to your fingertips. The touch pad at your booth is where you can order sushi, hot plates, nigiri, dessert and more, if you don’t feel like waiting. It’s ready in minutes and rockets to you on a belt, just above the revolving bar. Trust us when we say it’s addicting. Kiddos will enjoy the endless entertainment, and you can feel good about the rolls your tiny sushi lovers pluck from the belt. They promise their food is prepared using fresh, high–quality ingredients free of artificial sweeteners, seasonings, preservatives and colorings. The prices are great too—$3.25 per plate. They have ample parking in the parking garage, which makes getting in and out a breeze. We know how hard it can be to shuttle those strollers. You can leave them at home!
Insider tip: They have an app you can download to earn rewards and join the waitlist ahead of time. The app sends you texts and keeps you updated about your place in line. It’s a pretty popular place to eat, so checking in ahead isn’t a bad idea.
Good to know: You can win prizes if you discard a certain number of plates, so if your kiddos are competitive, be prepared to stuff those tummies. Kura's mascot, Muten–Maru, appears on the screen at your table and leads kids on an adventure. If you empty enough plates, you get a prize.

Let's just say this pub is up to par. Your little golfers will have a great time on the 9–hole mini golf course where they'll find elevation changes, brightly colored cartoons and tons of obstacles. Be sure to keep an eye out for Sasquatch. We hear the 12–foot–tall giant tours near the backend of the course. Did we mention kids 11 and under play for free? Because they do. When you're done on the putt putt course, try other fun games like board games, Jenga and Duffleboard. After you've gamed, swing by the dining area and enjoy pub fare, including scrumptious chicken fingers and fries. Just make sure to hit up this hot spot before 7 p.m., when it turns 21 and over. And you can make your visit easy by booking a tee time in advance on the website.
Insider tip: Take advantage of the pizza happy hour, weekdays between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. All pizzas are just $10.
Good to know: We love that Flatstick supports local breweries and selects a charity to support every month. You can feel good and shopping and playing here!

Located in the heart of the Kraken’s lair is a brand–new restaurant with one of the best views in town. The expansive 5,000-square-foot pub and grill overlooks the Starbucks Rink and Smartsheet Rink. Stop in for a hot meal after skating, or enjoy some poutine while you watch skaters glide and twirl on the ice below. You might even catch a glimpse of your favorite Kraken player. The pub fare is delicious, with all the cheesy, melty options your little one may crave. The mac and cheese is really yummy, and the portion size is enough to fill a very hungry tummy.
For little ones, you can also check out Tot Play Hour on Fridays, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. This cool option for the littlest ice adventurers just started on January 7. Families can rent skates for your tiny skater ($5), or feel free to wear sneakers instead. They provide balls, piles of snow for your little ones to trudge around in and Bobby the Seal skate aids to help aspiring skaters have a good time with fewer falls. Tot Play Hour is designed for parents and kiddos ages 6 and under. Registration is required and easy—simply sign up on DASH through their website.
Cost: $12/Adult; Free, kids 6 & under
Insider tip: The facility is cashless, so be sure to bring a credit card.
Good to know: Public skate sessions are offered over lunch hours, weekends and evenings, and all ages and abilities are welcome.
