It was Christmas. He was my first child, and barely a year old. My mother-in-law revealed that our Christmas Eve dinner would be held at Ruth’s Chris. You know, the fancy steak place—knives, everywhere!—that broils its meat on the dishes they serve it on? White tablecloths, crystal stemware? Add to that the fact that it was a party of 12—proper etiquette is on overdrive—and we were committed to a solid three hours of fine dining. Yep. That one. I still have PTSD.
Regardless of the setting, keeping toddlers entertained while you wait for your meal to be served on a rare night out is no small task. So, as a mom of four, here are my tried-and-true methods for making sure a meal out with toddlers isn’t a mission impossible. (And hey, if you need to bust out the iPad sometimes you’ll find no judgment here!)
Kiddie Cocktail Hour
There’s no hangry like a toddler hangry. Take the edge off your tot with a sippy cup full of their favorite juice (or a Shirley Temple!) and a couple of Ziploc bags of their most beloved snacks while waiting for your food to arrive.
Magnets
Some parents dig crayons to keep kids occupied, but anyone who’s ever spent most of their meal feeling around under a table for the one that rolled away knows they’re sometimes not worth the trouble. Try a stack of magnets instead (or this magnetic blocks toy). They’ll keep your impatient tot busy for longer stretches, and since they stick together, they’re easier to store in one place. Plus, you won’t find them melted to the bottom of your purse this July.
I Spy
This is an oldie but a goodie, and while I Spy might not work if you’re trying to have a conversation with adults at the same time (really, who manages that anyway with toddlers?), it’s a go-to for keeping my younger ones engaged and happy before the chicken nuggies arrive.
Sensory Bags
Tread carefully here, but if you can fill a couple of Ziploc bags with sand, glitter, sequins, or leftover noodles—and add a drop of two of food coloring—you can fill it with water when you get to the restaurant. Just be sure to take extra Ziplocs to double bag your concoction, and toss your sensory bag on your way out the door.
Along the same lines of magnets, a bag of play dough will beat crayons every time. If your toddler tires of squishing it around before mealtime and you get desperate, let them build a bowl and mix in sweetener, salt, and pepper (you know they’re playing with them anyway).
Dry-Erase Boards
For older toddlers, nothing beats tic-tac-toe on a dry-erase board, since you’ll be playing about 2,000 games of it before your meal arrives.
A 10-Year-Old
For real. Have you ever dined with a 10-year-old and a toddler? It’s solid gold. Your toddler is entertained, and the 10-year-old doesn’t mind the non-stop attention.
Live Music
If you don’t have a choice in your dining destination (a la Christmas, 2009), this isn’t going to help you. But with a little planning, you can probably find a spot with live music for maximum toddler enjoyment. Just bring hand sanitizer, because I’ve never met a toddler who can dance without serious floor-to-hand contact.
Smart Seating
There are tables; then there are tables made for families. Scout it out when you arrive and note your proximity to a window, distance from the busy kitchen, and, if possible, a patio with an adjacent lawn.
Stickers
At my house, it’s questionable if we even went out to eat if we don’t have to pick the stickers out of our hair before bedtime once we get home. And the best news is that toddlers aren’t picky. I’ve used excess return labels in a jam.

1. Enjoy historic Main Street and downtown Breckenridge.
This charming historic districts has plenty of modern-day perks and interests to keep the kids interested. Wander into Peek-a-Boo Toys, a speciality shop filled with toys and games, and stock up on sweets at Fuzzywigs Candy Factory. Rub the replica gold nugget for good luck at Prospector Park, check out the free history exhibit at the Welcome Center, blow off steam at the Blue River Lawn, and find the toddler sandbox and play area at the Blue River Plaza. Don’t leave without getting a cookie sandwich from Mountain Top Cookie Shop!
2. Experience Country Boy Mine.

This now-shuttered gold mine is a short distance from the heart of Breckenridge, and it’s something you won’t forget. You’ll walk almost 1,000 feet into the heart of the mine and learn what it was like for miners in the 19th century. There is also a chance to pan for gold, pet the donkeys, go on a treasure hunt, and try the extreme sledding course in the winter. There’s also a fun gift store at Country Boy Mine filled with gems, fun toys, and historic books about the history of mining in Colorado.
3. Go hiking.
All those mountains you ski in the winter? There are trails all over them, and in the summer, it’s one of the best ways to soak in the mountain air, wildflowers, waterfalls, and lakes. Some of the best hikes for families include the Sallie Barber Mine Trail, Blue River Trail, and the Fairy Forest Sawmill Reservoir Trail.
There is no end to the options for dining in Breckenridge. One of our favorite spots is Tin Plate Pizza. Located in an old mining cabin in the historic district, this spot is steeped in history. Home to the town’s gold assayer, Tin Plate is where Colorado’s largest gold nugget, colloquially named “Tom’s Baby,” was cleaned and weighed at 13.5 pounds in 1887. Go for the meatballs to start and then choose from a dozen pizza options like our favorite, the elote pizza that’s topped with corn, roasted poblano peppers and goat cheese.
Downstairs at Eric’s has a great menu, 27 arcade games, and a laid-back vibe. Breckenridge Brewery has fantastic apps for kids (think giant pretzels), a relaxed space, and great beers for the parents. Crepes a la Cart is well worth the wait in line, The Blue Moose is your best bet for breakfasts, and the Kenosha Steak House has one of the best decks in town, cornhole, and room to run.
5. Stay at the Grand Colorado on Peak 8 for the ultimate vacation experience.

Whether you’re there to ski or snowboard, or if you prefer the mountain town in the summer months, the Grand Colorado has everything you need, plus more. The Grand Colorado on Peak 8 has an escape room, lawn games like giant chess, shuffleboard, Nintendo and Wii rentals, two indoor/outdoor pools, splash pads for little kids, an arcade room with everything from air hockey to pinball, a free little library, and five private movie theaters you can reserve at the front desk upon arrival. You’ll see kids having fun everywhere: the lobby, the water zone, and outside. When staying at the Grand Colorado, you’ll have direct access to Peak 8 and the BreckConnect gondola.
If you want to dine at The Grand Colorado at Peak 8, Robbie’s Tavern is perfect for burgers, sandwiches, a fantastic Philly cheesesteak, and other upscale pub fare. It’s also a great spot to watch snow enthusiasts in the winter and the outdoor fun of Epic Discovery in the summer months. Ullr Café is where you’ll find coffee, baked goods (try the sausage roll), and a fun happy hour at the end of the day.
6. Spend the day at Epic Discovery.
Epic Discovery is the place for summer guests to enjoy ropes courses, panning for gems, a bungee trampoline, a bounce house, an alpine slide, a rock climbing wall, mini golf, and much more. If you aren’t staying near Peak 8, you can ride the gondola from town up to the mountainside for a day of fun. Epic Discovery is open from late June to Labor Day daily from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm, and the BreckConnect gondola is open daily from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm.
7. Enjoy the art scene.

From a downtown full of sculptures to live theater performances, Breckenridge is full of ways to explore the arts. We loved discovering these points of interest along Main Street as well astracking down the famed Breckenridge Troll in a nearby park. Named Isak Heartstone, this 15-foot tall wooden troll sculpture is located on the Trollstigen Trail next to Illinois Gulch Trailhead. You can walk here from Main Street to check out this massive sculpture by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who is known worldwide for bringing awareness to recycling and upcycling by building great things out of trash.
Another one of the best things to do in Breckenridge with kids is to catch a show at the Riverwalk Center, where live music and other events happen weekly (most are all-ages appropriate!). In August, you can enjoy the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts, when dozens of art events are held in parks, on trails, and in cultural venues.
If you’re looking for a indoor things to do in Breckenridge with kids, then Mountain Top Explorium is the place! Kids will love the Mountain Top Medical Center exhibit, where they can check X-rays, rescue skiers stranded on a slope, review vitals, and be first responders! Another fun pretend play area is the Wonder Lab, where kids can write their names on a glow-in-the-dark board, their shadows, and create a design on a giant Lite Brite.
Other exhibits include the Rocky Mountain Wildlife exhibit, the Tot Spot, and the Kidstruction Zone. They offer a summer day camp and guided astronomy sessions are coming soon.
9. Ride bikes along the Blue River Bikeway.

The Blue River Bikeway runs through the heart of town. The paved path is perfect for families who want to enjoy the mountain views. If you have toddlers or young kids, be aware that part of the path is on an incline, so you might benefit from renting a bike with a seat attachment. Don’t forget to pack lots of snacks and water and stopping at the playground at mile 3 is a must.
All throughout town, you can find ski shops that double as bike rental shops during the warm months like Elevation Cycles. Book a guided tour of the mountain bike trails with Colorado Adventure Guides to increase your skills or try something you’ve never done before. It’s a great way to view the area from a different vantage point and explore as a family.
Keep in mind that Breckenridge’s elevation can hit you hard when you arrive. Be sure to hydrate for a few days before you arrive, as well as while you are in Breckenridge. And, reapply sunscreen when you are out and about.

Fábrica and Arnaldo – Porto, Portugal The Israeli group Tamar, which opened Saboaria Porto in 2023, plans to open two new boutique hotels in Porto in the summer of 2024. "Fábrica" will be in a building a few meters from Avenida dos Aliados, where an old tobacco factory once stood. It will have six floors and a total of 44 rooms.
The second hotel will be built at the top of the Escadas dos Guindais and called "Arnaldo." It will be named after Arnaldo Gama, a local novelist from the 19th century. The first thing you’ll notice (we’re pretty sure everyone does) is the collection of pools that span all the way to the beach. A serene adults-only pool, complete with cabanas, leads into the ultimate family pool featuring kiddo-friendly depths and lots of seating. Want to get a little closer to the beach? The infinity pool at the edge of the property is what resort life is all about.

Each pool offers poolside service from the relaxed Coralle Pool Bar & Restaurant, located right next to the infinity pool, along with a hot tub in each space. And, of course, there’s beach access with private lounging and food service.

But the real star of the show? The unbelievable lazy river that wraps around the whole interior of the property. Float for a lap or two, or relax as long as you want—it’s the longest lazy river in Cabo. Everyone is welcome.

Villa La Valencia’s amenities don’t stop there. A wellness and fitness center offers a hydrotherapy circuit. The Azul Spa onsite features luxury massages and facials, body treatments, and even the option to have your in-room bathtub turned into a private spa experience. We highly recommend the After-Sun Treatment if you find yourself a little red (it’s really easy to forget to reapply sunscreen when you’re floating that lazy river. Trust us.).

From the breezy, casual El Patrón Restaurant, the chic, fine dining of Latitud 23.5 Steakhouse, to the open-air Italian kitchen at La Taberna, you literally can’t go wrong. The servers at each onsite restaurant addressed us by name and each meal was an incredible event. Of course, they’re not all on the formal side. For casual breakfast (with an unbelievable buffet), El Patrón is the place to be. Dine right by the ocean and infinity pool at Coralle, and snag quick snacks at Palmita Market & Deli. Wrap up your evening at La Jolla Bar for the perfect nightcap.

As parents ourselves, we adore that Villa La Valencia recognizes that kiddos relax differently than adults. Your Canadian Rockies guide is here, from hikes to where to stay
The Canadian Rockies are known for beautiful majestic mountains, the last public hot springs, stunning emerald-colored lakes, and Banff National Park. With 387 named mountains extending southeastward for 1000 miles and forming nearly half the border between British Columbia and Alberta, it’s a huge distance to cover in a week. We’ve gathered up our favorite things to do with kids in the Canadian Rockies including river float tours, gorgeous hikes, heli-hiking, and an epic gondola ride.

Things to Do with Kids in Canmore
Canmore is approximately 50 miles west of Calgary at Banff National Park’s southeast boundary. In the past, Canmore was seen as the place to stay if you couldn’t get a place in Banff. But there are many reasons to stay in Canmore, including reasonable prices, awesome restaurants with stunning views, 360 degrees of mountains, and relaxing hikes at the base of the Three Sisters peak.

Bow River Float Tours: This is exactly how it sounds; it’s a calm and leisurely float down the river and your kids can even paddle for a bit if they want. This tour with Canmore River Adventures is about 45 minutes on the water, just the right amount of time to hear a bit about the area and take in the beauty without the kids getting bored.

Helicopter Tour: If you are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience to get so close to the glacier you feel like you are almost walking on it, the Mount Assiniboine Glacier with Alpine Helicopter is a great option. The Mount Assiniboine Glacier Tour rises to 11,870 feet along the great divide and is a must-do if you visit Banff, Canmore, or the surrounding areas. This tour of the Canadian Rockies is great for couples and families alike.
Canmore Activities for Adventurous Families

Does grabbing a carabiner, rappelling, or climbing and exploring in caves excite you? Rat’s Nest Cave is the experience for you. At almost 2.5 miles long, there’s nowhere else like Rat’s Nest Cave in Canada. The highlight is the Grotto room, where you’ll descend 180 feet underground. The tour takes approximately 4.5 hours, with 2 of that underground. This activity is for families with kids 10 and older who are interested in exploring caves together.
Wellness activities in Canmore
Wellness is much more than spas, especially in the Canadian Rockies, and Canmore has much to offer. These are some of our favorites:
Elevation Place is Canmore’s community recreation center with an indoor climbing gym, pool, water slide, hot tubs, a library, an art gallery, and many community spaces that are open to visitors. This is a great fit for families with kids of all ages.
Forest Fix: Support your health and wellness through guided immersion in forests and other environments. It is inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin yoku or “Forest Bathing.”

This excursion is a great way to get to the top of Sulphur Mountain without a 3-hour uphill hike. Here you can see six stunning mountain ranges. The Gondola is a modern, fully enclosed four-passenger cabin. Once at the top, you can take the easy ridgetop boardwalk to explore more.
For a relaxing take on this activity, stop in for lunch or dinner at Northern Lights Alpine Kitchen. This award-winning market-style restaurant serves alpine cuisine, prepared with fresh, local ingredients.
Wellness Activities in Banff
Banff Upper Hot Springs is an outdoor public hot spring located in Banff National Park, offering beautiful views of Mount Rundle. The Banff Upper Hot Springs is the last of the remaining springs open to the public and a great place to spend a few hours. The water is warm, and they have a nice shallow area for kids. They offer full rental services including towels, swimsuits, and lockers.
Fairmont Spa Banff Springs is an award-winning 40,000-square-foot day spa. The spa offers water therapy, pools, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a steam room, and a eucalyptus-scented sauna. Take a break with breathtaking mountain views, and a bit of quiet away from the busyness of the public hot springs. The spa is for adults only, but the pool and hot springs in the aquatic center are open to the whole family. Take advantage of the Kids at the Castle childcare program if you want to experience the spa.
Mahikan Trails is an Indigenous Company that proudly shares traditional culture and knowledge. The medicine walk allows the participants the opportunity to walk with an Indigenous guide, who will share the knowledge and traditions of the Boreal Forest. Your guide imparts the medicines found in the forest and touches on different aspects of their culture.
Hiking, Biking, and Paddling in the Alberta Rockies

Due to high demand, visiting Lake Louise and Moraine Lake requires planning. Personal cars are only permitted into the Moraine Lake and Lake Louise areas if you are staying at a property in the area. Taking transit or booking a Parks Canada shuttle in advance is easy, stress-free, and the only way to ensure you see these iconic lakes.
Hiking in Banff National Park
Moraine Lake: If you go to Moraine Lake and want to see the beautiful color the lake is known for, the secret is you must look down on it. You can climb the rocks at the front or, if you are feeling less adventurous and/or traveling with little kids, take the scenic trail path towards the Consolation Lakes Trail. From the lower parking lot, cross the bridge over the outlet stream and continue to Consolation Lakes. Follow the Rockpile that passes through a quartzite boulder field it’s a very beautiful and easy way to get to the top. If you must choose between Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, we highly recommend the first one. It is a hidden gem.
Bow River Trail to the falls is a treat, and it’s easy to access from Downtown Banff and steps from Fairmont Banff Springs. You can take this trail to the other side to get some awesome Instagram-worthy snaps of the Fairmont Banff Springs at Surprise Corner.

Lake Louise Area: Known for its turquoise, glacier-fed lake, and impressive Victoria Glacier, there is something for everyone in this part of the Canadian Rockies. From canoeing across the stunning emerald-colored lake to various hiking trails to the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, it’s easy to see why so many people flock to Lake Louise throughout the year. A word of caution, if you expect to be out in nature taking in the beautiful view and enjoying a bit of solitude in this area, you will be sorely disappointed. This is a very, very busy destination. It will be difficult to get a parking spot; it might be difficult even to get to the destination.
One of the easiest ways to actually get in on the day and time that you want is to hop on one of the shuttle busses
With kids, the Lake Louise Lakeshore trail is a very easy and fun hike, and you get the iconic view of Lake Louise. For avid hikers, the Big Beehive is a great trail to get stunning views from the top, it’s a moderate trail but steep.
Johnston Canyon: Johnston Canyon is one of the most popular attractions in Banff National Park, recognized as a Canadian Signature Experience. It’s a very family-friendly hike and you are rewarded with gorgeous waterfall views.
Heli-hiking: Heli-Hiking might be the way to go if you want to see the views without the work and trek.
Biking: For families looking for biking fun, Bikescape offers both group tours and private excursions in Banff & Canmore. They even have mountain biking camps and lessons.

Paddling: There are many lakes in Banff National Park where you can experience the lake by canoe or kayak. You can head out for a few hours or a full day. Non-motorized boats, including canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards are welcome on all water bodies in Banff National Park.

Rundle Bar: Originally designed and utilized as the front lobby in the historic Banff Springs Hotel from 1928 to the late 1990s, this bar has the most magnificent views looking out at Cascade Mountain.
Lupo: Lupo (Italian for wolf) brings an authentic taste of Italy to downtown Banff with an open-concept kitchen.
Brazen: Opened in June 2022 and located inside the historic Mount Royal Hotel in the heart of Banff Avenue.
Where to Stay in Banff
Mount Royal Hotel: The Mount Royal Hotel is one of Banff’s most centrally located properties.
Fairmont Banff Springs: If you are looking for a luxury getaway where everything is available at the hotel, the Fairmont Banff Springs, the Castle in the Rockies, will provide the ultimate escape. Take it up a notch with the Gold Floor experience, which is a hotel with a hotel. Separate entrance, accommodation on specific floors.
Sundance Lodge: Let go of it all and completely escape into the wild of Banff National Park. The 10-room log cabin was built in 1991 with locally harvested timber. With views of the Sundance Mountain Range and miles of forests in the Canadian Rockies, Sundance Lodge feels remote and secluded but it’s only actually (10 miles) from the Town of Banff. The only challenge is you have to get there by horseback in the summer, as motorized vehicles are not permitted in Banff National Park.

Why is it that dads always seem to have everything they could ever want? Maybe they genuinely don’t want anything that they don’t already own.
