Alice’s Tea Cup

A reasonably priced tea can be tough to find. At Alice’s Tea Cup, your crew can enjoy a full English tea service without running up a huge bill. This local chain has three locations for a baby shower in NYC: one on the Upper East Side, one on the Upper West and one in Brooklyn Heights. Depending on your party size and preferred location, you can reserve a spot in the main dining room or rent a private room. Guests will get their fill on sweets, savory sandwiches and teas from around the world. Make a morning reservation before 11:30 a.m. on weekdays or 3 p.m. on weekends to take advantage of their Mad Morning Tea and get the best price. Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon 

If your goal is an authentic high tea with the mom-to-be, try Lady Mendl’s. Up the street from Gramercy Park, located inside The Inn at Irving Place, you’ll find a beautiful room with Victorian-style architecture and finishings. The inn offers a five-course tea with freshly baked scones and classic finger sandwiches. There is just one downside: the experience is costly. Pricing for the main tea salon, which holds up to 50 people, starts at $5000 for four hours on weekends. A more reasonable, yet still pricey, option is hosting the party in their formal library, which holds up to 20 guests. You can rent it starting at $2000 for up to 2.5 hours.

Parisian Tea Room: For a Tea Party with a Twist

You can hold a proper high tea at the brand new Parisian Tea Room (opens September 10), the decor of which is inspired by owner Karen E. Lozner’s visits to tea rooms in the French capital. Escape to the Italian countryside on Eataly Flatiron’s rooftop. A dining space that changes with the seasons transitions from a “flowering greenhouse” resplendent in bright pink blooms in spring to a celebration of winter beauty dubbed “Serra Alpina.” (It’s not as traditionally “girly” as the spring/summer iteration, but it’s still gorgeous.) This Greenwich Village bistro is the spot to host a bridal or baby shower. Many happy customers leave, declaring it the best brunch in Manhattan. The Green Room, Jane’s private space, holds 40 guests for a seated, three-hour party. For $45 per person, everyone will get a starter, main course, family-style sides, coffee, tea, juice, & soda. The events coordinator will work with you to customize and personalize your menu. There is no shortage of delicious entrees; we recommend including the Farm House Popover, featuring scrambled eggs, smoked ham, Gruyère and caramelized onions or the Vanilla Bean French Toast on the menu. Note: There is no room rental for a weekend brunch event, but there is a $2,600 minimum to be met before taxes and fees.

Maman

Suppose you want your baby shower in NYC to have that certain je ne sais quoi (in this case, effortlessly chic rustic French charm), head to Maman. The cafe/bakery has numerous NYC locations that host events. Its newest, Maman King (pictured above), is the largest Maman location yet! You’ll find others in Tribeca, Soho, Greenpoint, Nomad, Cobble Hill and the Upper East Side; Marche Maman on Centre Street has an intimate outdoor garden space. In addition to the romantically charming decor, you’ll dine on delectable French bites and pastries, which can be served family style or as finger foods. Brunch, lunch, and dinner are available. The Crosby Street Hotel Sculpture Courtyard

Book The Crosby Street Hotel’s Sculpture Courtyard for a genuinely luxurious yet intimate experience with European flair. The Soho Hotel’s serene space features a tall organic tree sculpture, suspended pendant lights, and the greenery of a mix of small trees and shrubs, including magnolia, hydrangea and other native plantings. Private events, held from noon to 4 p.m., are capped at 25 guests, and there is a food and beverage minimum of $95/person. Rates are $6,000 for weekdays and $7,500 on weekends. This award-winning, popular Prospect Heights restaurant recently opened a chic private event space in the storefront next door. The room can host a seated affair or cocktail party for up to 30 people, featuring stylish floral wallpaper and a custom bookshelf stocked with cookbooks and collectibles. The restaurant also has a charming garden open year-round thanks to heat lamps (where some of its food is grown) that can be booked. The icing on the cake is the hallway that leads to the garden, which features an immersive, floor-to-ceiling installation of fragrant, preserved plants, moss, and lush greenery on every surface. Sunday in Brooklyn

Home to some of our favorite pancakes (and a happening brunch scene), Sunday in Brooklyn also has several event spaces ranging from casual to refined funky, and you can host a party for as few as nine people and as many as 200. Choose from an intimate private dining room for 16 on the third floor, a second-floor sunroom (for 50 people, pictured), a second-floor rooftop covered garden (more casual) and more. This sweet Lower East Side flower shop will host your baby shower in NYC on-site or come to you. You can host a gathering of up to 24 people in the shop, with the option of catering from the equally chic cafe, Maman (see above). Add on an activity such as making floral crowns, terrariums, seasonal bouquets and more, as well as botanically-inspired favors and memorable decor. Showers include a staff member to assist with setup and lead the class. 

Showers are two hours, and if on-site, are $900 (outside of business hours) and $2,000 during business hours. Off-site showers are $1,250 with a 20 percent delivery fee.

Milk Bar

Moms-to-be with a sweet tooth will love learning to bake cakes and truffles at Momofuku Milk Bar. Guests learn all the steps for assembling Milk Bar’s most popular layer cake flavor combinations and will learn how to transform cake scraps into delectable bite-sized cake truffles. Sprinkles Cupcakes

At Sprinkles, $900 will get you two hours, four dozen full-sized cupcakes, or six dozen mini cupcakes, and you can choose to have them frosted or unfrosted. If you choose the unfrosted option, you can select up to three cakes and frostings and host a frosting party upstairs! If you’d like to add on any additional time, the rate is $100 per hour. Sprinkles doesn’t provide any food or beverages, but you can bring any outside food or drinks or even have them delivered to the store. Fandi Mata

For the boho-chic baby shower of your dreams (in Williamsburg, no less), consider Fandi Mata, where “Brooklyn industrial meets the Mediterranean.” Choose to be seated on the main level, the mezzanine or in the outdoor heated pergola—you’ll be surrounded by plants, vibrant hues and maybe even some macrame. Parties can snack on creative brunch items, large and small plates like breads, pizzas and spreads (lots of varieties of hummus here), and the restaurant specializes in creative cocktails for those who wish to sip a little something. Brooklyn Winery

On first thought, wine tasting might not seem like the best activity for a baby shower. After all, the guest of honor can’t indulge in the house specialty! But before you poopoo the idea, check out Brooklyn Winery’s beautiful private space. This boutique urban winery in Williamsburg has a rustic setting decorated with antique glass candle holders and vintage china. The venue offers two packages: The Afternoon Bites menu, which is well-suited for a cocktail-style event, and the Afternoon Luncheon, which features a more traditional lunch service of salads and sandwiches. You’ll also enjoy some of Brooklyn Winery’s best reds and whites. The space holds anywhere from twenty to 160 people, and you can reserve it for up to three hours. FOR AFFORDABLE OUTSIDE IDEAS

Throwing a baby shower doesn’t have to break the bank. These NYC spots are perfect if you want to host a casual, free outdoor event. 

Mad. Sq. Music

Is the mom-to-be a music fan? Get a small group together and spend an evening at Madison Square Park listening to some of the world’s top performers. The Oval Lawn Series is held on Wednesday evenings all summer and features a mix of genres. If you’re throwing a Fall shower, The Studio Series is held on Saturday afternoons all autumn and includes folk, blues and Americana acts. The concert is entirely free. Just make sure you arrive early so that you can snag a good spot.

Hudson River Park Pier 63

This city has no shortage of parks; many are perfect for hosting a picnic lunch. This lush, grassy lawn with unique stone seating and a charming view of the Hudson is one of the best for a laid-back outdoor shower. It’s still not well-known, so it doesn’t get as crowded as the Sheep’s Meadow or other popular spots. Plus, it offers ample room for younger guests to run around. The dads will volunteer to take the kids next door to Chelsea Piers for adult-only events. If you need to create a menu, nearby Chelsea Market is full of gourmet eateries and bakeries.

The Village of Rosemont

Visit Rosemont for festive activities for the whole family to enjoy. After all, the village's slogan is "It's All Here," and no time is this truer than during the winter holidays. From ice skating at the Chicago Wolves Ice Rink in Parkway Bank Park, to a visit with Santa while getting all your shopping done at the Fashion Outlets of Chicago, there's no escaping the holiday feels. Holiday Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremonies in and around Chicago

"Light Up the Park" Tree Lighting Event

Rosemont’s Parkway Bank Park entertainment district kicks off the holiday season with its Light Up the Park event. A variety of family-friendly festivities will be available from 2-6 p.m., including visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, free horse-drawn sleigh rides, carolers, and ice sculpting viewing. The 80,000 holiday lights will be lit, for the first time, at 5:30 p.m. The ice rink will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Parkway Bank Park’s restaurants and entertainment venues will also be open throughout the day.

CTA Holiday Train

Santa and his merry band of elves will make an appearance on every El line this holiday season. The dancers are accompanied by the Lakeside Pride Symphonic Band under the gorgeous rotunda of the Chicago Cultural Center. Duke It Out! Nutcracker at Nichols Concert Hall

History

In 1864, the railroad was built in order to take visitors arriving from San Francisco up to a resort in Calistoga. The Napa Wine train’s inaugural journey began in 1989 and has been a staple in Napa ever since with the railroad and train playing an integral part to Napa’s growth and development. 

Scenery

The 36 mile round trip journey to St. Helena starts at the Napa train station and showcases exquisite wine country scenery (and the famous Napa sign!) as it rambles idyllically along Hwy 29 past 100+ vineyards. Of all the ways to enjoy Napa scenery with your family, the Napa Wine train really lets you sit back and relax… all without a designated driver.

The Experience

Check-in starts at the train station where a wine store, lounge and restrooms await. Boarding is by groups and done so via the Locks of Love Bridge, where a token of your love can be left with the collection. A professional photo is taken before boarding of which the digital copy is complimentary with physical copies available for purchase following the tour. 

Stepping into the train car truly feels like time travel with rich mahogany panels coupled with tasteful brass accents engulfing the car. A champagne (or cider) toast sets the right tone and as the train pulls away, attentive staff offer four types of tea: Yunan black, earl grey, chamomile and rooibos. 

First, a carrot ginger soup (quite possibly our favorite part of the meal—next to dessert, of course) was served followed by a beet salad. Finger sandwiches followed with the lobster vul-au-vent (fancy speak for a pastry shell filled with lobster) and radish and creme fraiche being favorites. 

Cheese and grapes, macarons, bon-bons (how could there not be bon-bons on a train?) and other sweet treats finished the tea service by which time we were bursting at the seams. We also loved that periodically during the trip, narratives and insight is given by the staff regarding the history of certain wineries and interesting facts and tidbits we otherwise wouldn’t have known. This made it seem like a fun history lesson set in an actual piece of living history! 

Good to know: 

  • While the afternoon tea service is for the 10 and up crowd, other tours and experiences are available with no minimum age. Seeing as two or three hours is a long time for anyone to sit still, parents of the younger set might want to bring some form of entertainment  
  • Diaper changing is not permitted on board and children aren’t allowed to wander the cars 
  • The Afternoon Tea service menu is not modifiable but we were told other tours can change their menus with advanced notice 
  • The two types of seating are booths and plush armchairs and we recommend a booth because eating in an armchair seems like a recipe for spilling with kids  
  • Tickets range from $245-$295/person which makes it great for a special occasion celebration

27 Little Things That Mean the World to Your Kids

You always hear about doing random acts of kindness for strangers. But sometimes those little acts can have a big impact on our own kids too. There are lots of ways you can make time for kids that really won’t cost you much in terms of effort, but will go a long way in your little one’s day. In the spirit of positive parenting, here are 27 little gestures that make kids feel really important.

1. Host a Yes Day. Ice cream for dinner? Yes! An impromptu trip to the park? Sure! Imagine the joy your kids will feel when you say "yes" to everything! Inspired by the Yes Day book, this post has all the details you need to say "yes" all day long.

2. Color together. Grab a blank stack of paper, a pack of crayons and your imagination and start drawing. Spend time with your kids drawing pictures together, and then hang your art throughout the house to remind you of the special time together.

3. Show appreciation and say "thank you." Everyday life can get tough, and sometimes we forget to appreciate the little things our kids do for us. Make an effort to thank them for even the smallest things. Did your kiddo do a great job getting ready for bed? Tell her how much you appreciate it. It may seem little to you, but it will mean the world to her.

4. Don't say anything when your kids dress themselves "creatively." Left on their own, many kids will dress themselves in mismatched outfits and funky shoes. Why not let them have a day where you go with the flow? Maybe even tell them how much you love their outfit!

5. Had a fight with your partner? Make sure your kids see you apologize and make up.

6. Spend time outside together. Turn off the screens and step outdoors for family fun. We're not talking about major camping trips or outdoor adventures. Little things like going for a family walk, a trip to the park, or having a snowball fight will make your kids feel happy to be with you.

7. Share words of affection. Make sure you tell your kids you love them, or how you're proud of them for simply being a good kid. Words can be powerful, and your kids will remember what you say.

8. Have a tea party. Get those pinkies up, make finger sandwiches, brew some tea (or juice boxes) and put on a fancy hat for fun.

9. Give them extra time before bedtime. Does your kid constantly ask to push her bedtime? Surprise her one night by letting her have an extra 20-30 minutes before snoozing.

10. Help your kid be brave. Let them express themselves fully and read a few books about bravery. Give your kiddos the tools they need to express self-confidence. These small efforts will go a long way in instilling confidence in even the youngest of tykes.

11. Eat a family meal together. It's okay if a family dinner isn't your thing. How about family breakfast, or lunch on the weekends? Whatever works for your family, make an effort to have a special meal together.

12. Wear the handmade jewelry item they made you. Remember that macaroni necklace your son made you? Take it out of the drawer and wear it for a day.

13. Tell them a story about what they were like as babies. Remind them about the first time they smiled, their first word, or the first time they walked.

14. Let them know it's okay to quit. If your kiddo has been miserable playing soccer or attempting a new skill, give them permission to move on and leave the unhappy activity behind.

15. Play a game. Get out a deck or card and play Go Fish, or gather around the table to play a board game.

16. Watch the sunrise or sunset together. It only lasts a few brief moments, but sometimes that's all you need to make a big impression on your kid.

17. Help them clean their room. We're always telling our kids to pick up their stuff and clean up. When you have a bit more time to give, make a point to do the clean-up work together.

18. Have an impromptu dance party. This can be as simple as putting on a few songs and dancing in the living room. No fancy equipment. Just some music and a willingness to move.

19. Let your kid pick the dinner menu. This little gesture can make your kids feel really important, especially if you have a picky eater in the house. Need meal inspirations? We've got you covered with these cookbook recommendations.

20. Play video games with them. While the idea of playing Minecraft or Roblox is probably not your idea of fun, the opposite is most certainly true for your young gamer. How much would they love it if you took some time to play alongside them?

21. Learn something new together. Have you always wanted to make a pie? Do it with your kiddo! Does your little one want to learn a new dance move? Get your rhythm on together. Working together to achieve a goal will strengthen your bond and show your kiddos you care about their efforts.

22. Read together. Grab a book and snuggle up on the couch together and read. Whether your kiddo is small and needs you to read aloud or you've got a young reader who prefers their own book, take a few minutes to bond over books. Your kids will remember this time together.

23. Have a pajama day. While it's great to get outside, there's nothing wrong with having a day indoors that focuses on indoor play, movies, books and stay in pajamas all day.

24. Print photos and make an album for your kids. We have thousands of photos, but they exist virtually. Print out a handful of photos and create a small album for your little one to flip through. They will love this simple act of kindness.

25. Write a note of encouragement. This can be as simple as "I love you and thanks for being a great kid." Slip the note in their lunch box. Tape it to the mirror, or leave it on your kiddo's pillow.

26. Take a walk on a rainy day and splash in ALL the puddles. Letting out your inner four-year-old will show your kids that you're not afraid to get silly too. 

27. Pick a summer anthem. If you and your kids have a theme song for summer, you'll be able to sing together every time you put it on.

Little Tokyo: Fun Activities, Culture & Cuisine for Los Angeles Kids

Itching for an easy and fun day trip? Look no further than Little Tokyo, a downtown

neighborhood home to an eclectic mix of ethnicities, shops and restaurants. Kids will love exploring the colorful local small shops and parents will love that this rich cultural enclave is conveniently located right in our own backyard (goodbye, long car rides!). Whether you spend a whole day here or a just a few hours there’s plenty to see, do, and taste for little ones of all ages.

How to Get There
Little Tokyo is roughly five square city blocks that sit near the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles and is easy to get to by car or Metro. Located three blocks south of the Hollywood 101 freeway, westbound drivers should take the Alameda St. exit; eastbound drivers should take the Los Angeles St. exit. The Metro station is located near the corner of Alameda and First St.

Parking
There are over 17 parking lots in the area and some offer free parking with a validation including the multi-level lot of the Japanese Village Plaza located at 335 East 2nd St. There is also a lot directly across from the Japanese American Museum adjacent to Senior Fish restaurant that charges by the day.

What to Do & See
Little Tokyo is home to two museums. The Japanese-American Museum is the only museum in the country dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history and heritage of Americans of Japanese ancestry. The museum offers a Free-Family Sat. with extra fun for kiddos like origami or mask making crafts tables every month. It is also home to two permanent exhibits that documents the forced relocation of citizens during World War II including an original barracks from the Heart Mountain relocation camp that housed many incarcerated Japanese Americans. The kiddos will love browsing the gift shop and having tea and finger sandwiches on the beautiful patio of the Chado Tea room.

Right next-door is the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. This 40,000 square foot facility formerly housed police cars for nearby Parker Center. This spacious facility is child and stroller friendly and offers free admission every Thursday 5:00pm – 8:00pm. Adults $10, kids under 12 are free.

Where to Grab a Bite to Eat
There are numerous great kid-friendly places to eat in Little Tokyo. Suerhiro Café, on First St. is an American style diner that serves Japanese food. The menu is huge and they specialize in Japanese comfort foods such as udon, katsu, tempura, and teriyaki. It’s the warm family-style atmosphere that makes this place so great. There’s hand-drawn artwork sketched on hundreds of napkins that adorn the walls and may even inspire your kids to draw while you sip on a glass of tasty matcha iced green tea.

Across the street in the outdoor Japanese Village Plaza, not only does the Frying Fish offer great sushi and rolls at a decent price, but an added attraction is the cool conveyor belt that moves around the perimeter of the sushi bar carrying small plates of neatly arranged sushi, rolls, and edename. Not too mention the good-natured sushi chefs that occasionally break out in song and dance. It’ s a fun atmosphere for the kids and the food is reasonably priced.

Next door to the Frying Fish is Mikawaya, a Japanese pastry shop and ice cream parlor that also happens to be the originator of Mochi Ice Cream, a small ball of ice cream about the size of a golf ball wrapped in sweet sticky rice dough.  They also serve gelato, but don’t miss out on the mochi. They offer several different flavors that you won’t find in grocery stores.

If you want to take the kids for a short walk, take a stroll to the Little Tokyo Galleria, which sits on the corner of Alameda and Third St. The mall is home to a full size grocery store that carries only Japanese and Korean products and has a small food court and bakery near the entrance where you can order soba, udon, ready-made sushi, and fresh spongy cakes and sweet treats.
