Fireworks and noodle soup are two fun Lunar New Year traditions for families

Whether it’s called Chinese New Year, Seollal, Shōgatsu, or Tết, Lunar New Year (running officially from New Year’s Eve on Jan 22. through Feb. 5) is a special holiday for more than 1.6 billion people of Asian descent across the globe. Think of it as a cross between the Fourth of July, Passover, Christmas, and the biggest birthday bash ever—all rolled into one. There are some essential customs that many people hold dear, and each one revolves around family, food, fortune, and fun; these Lunar New Year traditions will help you teach your kids about this important holiday.

Prepare for the Lunar New Year

Kipp Jarecke-Cheng

Although it happens in the middle of winter, Lunar New Year is also known as the Spring Festival in many Asian countries. As such, it’s also a time when many families prepare for the new year (and the coming spring) with major house cleaning. Asian superstition dictates that household organization extends to finances too, which means paying off or collecting debts before the new year.

In addition to decorating the house with red paper cutouts and banners—particularly rabbit-themed decorations in 2023—during this festive time, a fun activity to do with kids is folding origami boxes and putting small lights in them as a way to remember ancestors and wish for good luck in the coming year.

Pro-tip: Plan to do housekeeping before the new year commences. Many celebrants believe that sweeping around the house on Lunar New Year’s Day is akin to sweeping away all of your good luck for the year!

Have Some Noodle Soup

Kipp Jarecke-Cheng

There are many different traditional dishes that are enjoyed during Lunar New Year, but one of the most common dishes served across Asian countries during the holiday is a bowl of noodle soup. On Lunar New Year’s Eve and Day, families often eat handmade wheat noodles in a savory broth that includes vegetables and hard-boiled eggs. Long noodles represent longevity and long life, while eggs symbolize rebirth and starting anew.

Pro-tip: Don’t cut the noodles! Slurping is OK and expected. Also, it’s traditional to serve elders and the little ones before serving yourself.

Mo’ Money, Mo’ Fortunes

Kipp Jarecke-Cheng

During Lunar New Year, kids may receive festively decorated red envelopes that are filled with “lucky money,” along with written notes wishing them health, happiness, and success. Known as lai see (Cantonese), ang pao (Hokkien) or hong bao (Mandarin), these red packets also are given during other holidays and special occasions. Increasingly, money is given via red envelope mobile payment apps in many parts of Asia.

Pro-tip: While the amount of cash isn’t as important as the intent behind the gift, many Asian people believe the number or denomination is very important, so you’ll want to make sure you’re putting a “lucky” number inside the red envelopes. Also, make sure to include clean, crisp bills because no one wants to start the new year with crumpled cash.

Find the Fireworks

Kipp Jarecke-Cheng

While many people in America set off fireworks that light up the night sky only during Fourth of July celebrations, firecrackers are the noisemakers of choice for those who commemorate Lunar New Year. Traditionally, the sounds from the small explosions are meant to drive away evil spirits, while strings of firecrackers are invariably red, which is an auspicious and lucky color.

Pro-tip: Since most places require special permits or have banned fireworks and firecrackers outright, take the kiddos to your city or town’s Chinatown, which often has firecracker displays and lion dances during the weeks of the Lunar New Year. Alternately, ringing bells to usher in the Lunar New Year is a perfectly acceptable way to ward off evil spirits this time of year. Plus, you’ll have an excuse to use those jingle bells left over from Christmas.

Dress for Success for Lunar New Year

Kipp Jarecke-Cheng

Dressing in bright colors—especially in red—is common practice during Lunar New Year. Revelers wear their fanciest duds as a way to scare away evil spirits and invite good fortune to them. Some devotees will even go as far as wearing red underpants! Wearing new clothes from head to toe also symbolizes new beginnings for the new year, and wearing something red is the luckiest color of them all.

Pro-tip: Red looks good on everybody.

Take a Family Photo

Kipp Jarecke-Cheng

Most importantly, Lunar New Year is about spending time and celebrating with family and loved ones. For many Asian families, Lunar New Year is the one time in the year when entire extended families get to see each other, so it’s the perfect opportunity to snap an annual family portrait. If you live far away from relatives, this might not be possible, so try other ways to stay connected like these sweet ideas for keeping in touch with grandparents from a distance

Pro-tip: Your family portrait shouldn’t be too staged or too pose-y. It’s a celebration. Have fun!

The fireworks on the National Mall are one of the most spectacular shows in town. Set against the Washington Monument, there are a couple key vantage points for optimal viewing (check out our insider tips below), but a number of other area fireworks are also stunning (and many promise lesser crowds). Whether you want to celebrate America’s birthday in our nation’s capitol or you’re looking to venture further out of the city, we’ve found the best places to catch a dazzling display of fireworks in Washington, DC and beyond.

In the City

National Mall Fireworks
The National Mall becomes the ultimate amphitheater every July 4th.  Grab your picnic blanket and park your family on any patch of grass  on the National Mall and you’ll have a front row seat to the show. This is the most crowded place to watch the celebration, so pack some snacks to help distract overtired kids (it can take up to an hour to leave the area). If you’re looking for something more low-key, you can still catch this awe-inspiring show beyond the Mall.

For a quiet, sensory-friendly evening: head to the National Cathedral. Boasting the highest point in the city, you can take the DC fireworks without all the noise. Another high vantage point can be found at Cardozo High School near U St. This is a hot spot with locals that guarantees a low-key vibe.

For an active evening: spend the night at The Wharf where you can have dinner, grab a s’mores kit  for dessert and gather around the fire, watch fireworks.

For a unique experience: For a dazzling view, watch the fireworks on the Potomac. You don’t need to be on a boat for this view. The 14th Street Bridge, the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the Arlington Memorial Bridge all are great spots to take in the July 4th celebrations. There are also a number of Firework Cruise options including the Signature Dinner Cruise by CityExperiences and the Alexandria City Water Taxi and for those wanting an intimate evening with just the fam, private charters, like this tour by sailboat from Reflections DC.

MARYLAND

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Spectacular
Immerse yourself in Revolutionary Americana in the city of Baltimore. Spend some time at Fort McHenry where the bombardment by the British inspired Francis Scott Key to pen “The Defense of Fort M’Henry” better known today as the “Star Spangled Banner.” You can also visit the home of the seamstress who made the garrison flag made famous by Key’s song.  More ways celebrate Independence Day include live music in the Inner Harbor amphitheater starting at 4 p.m , a live spoken word performance of Frederick Douglass’ “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” at Rash Field Park at 7:39 p.m and  the main event—fireworks—over the Inner Harbor at 9:30 p.m. Event details.

Annapolis’s July 4th Celebration
Kick start America’s birthday with a parade down Main Street at 6:30 p.m. Any spot along the route is a good spot to take in this small town parade. There will be antique cars, firetrucks, marching bands and more. Fireworks light up the sky starting at 8 p.m The best places to take in Annapolis’s display is on the City Dock or standing on Naval Academy Bridge. Event details.

An All-Day Celebration in Frederick
It’s an all day celebration in Frederick where festivities start at noon. Baker Park is the backdrop for this city’s 4th of July party that features entertainment on two stages, kids rides and games, a dunk tank (because, let’s face it, it’s hot!) and local food vendors. The fireworks show starts at dusk and while you can see the fireworks from most areas in the park, some parts may be obstructed. For optimal viewing, head towards the Fleming Ave. Swimming Pool, the Frederick High School lawn or the Carillon Area of Baker Park. Event details.

Fireworks. And More Fireworks in Columbia
If there is no such thing as too many fireworks for you and your crew, Howard County might be the 4th of July roadtrip you need this year. Boasting the largest display in the area, this fireworks show goes on for a solid 20 minutes (longer than the National Mall!). Live music starts at 6 p.m. and the grand finale in the sky starts at 9:20 p.m. Event details.

VIRGINIA

Vienna’s Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks
This NOVA suburb is Virginia’s answer to the Howard County Display. For over twenty minutes, the sky over Vienna is illuminated with one of the area’s most epic firework shows. The evening starts with a performance by the United States Navy Concert Band at 8 p.m. followed by fireworks (estimated to be 9:30 p.m.). Event details.

Celebrate America in Manassas
Come celebrate with one of the largest displays of fireworks in Northern Virginia. This event has small town feels with face painting, eating contests and a bike decorating competition.  Families can park themselves (and their snacks) on the Manassas Museum lawn to watch the fireworks show. When it comes to the 4th of July, riding in the kiddie parade is as much of a tradition as the big firework show at the end of the day. With a little imagination and a few supplies, you can deck out your kids’ wagons, bikes, and trikes for the biggest and best birthday bash of the year. Get inspired with the fun and creative ideas we’ve gathered below.

photo: Jeff Youngstrom via Flickr

1. Use Your Helmet
We get it. Finding the time to whip up a parade float is the last thing on your to-do list. So, let your kid’s helmet do all the decor work while he rolls through the parade route. It’ll take you almost no time at all.

photo: la fattina via Flickr

2. A Pie for the Parade
Get yourself a plastic kiddie pool, balloons, brown paper, and a wagon, and you’ve got yourself a slice of Mom’s apple pie. Sweet!

photo: Baker County Tourism via Flickr

3. Take Flight
Send your little patriot soaring with an adorable airplane float. This version is made out of plywood, paint, rope, and stickers, but we’re betting a cardboard box will do the trick.

photo: Larry Tenney via Flickr

4. Sparkly All-Stars
Your older kids will love to be the all-stars of the Independence Day Parade. They can walk or ride their bikes!

photo: Danielle Hampton via Sometimes Sweet

5. A Ride for the Tiny Tots
You’ve got tiny tots along for the ride this year. Keep it simple with a red wagon, a few flags, and some star garlands. We love the way Danielle of Sometimes Sweet doubled up on adorable with two tiny passengers.

photo: Jim, the Photographer via Flickr

6. The Power Parade
It’s time to charge up the Power Wheels and drape it with party decor. It’ll take you all of five minutes, and you won’t have to pull anything (Make sure the battery is fully charged!).

photo: Megan Cooley

7. Take a Rocket Ride
Blast off! How about a rocket ride for the kiddie parade? Megan of Penny Carnival snapped a picture of her niece riding shotgun to the moon. You’ll need cardboard, tissue paper, a wagon, fringe, and some prep time.

photo: Jim, the Photographer via Flickr
