It’s likely that the extent of your knowledge about the small Caribbean island of St. Barthelemy (or St. Barths/St. Barts, for short) is that it is frequently visited by celebrities and involves a flight from St. Martin that culminates in a dramatic runway landing. Turns out, you’ll also find families flocking to this island full of secluded beaches, high-end shopping, and some of the best seafood you’ve ever tasted. We visited the Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf in St. Barths and found it to be the perfect Caribbean home-away-from-home for families.
Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf
Le Carl Gustaf sits on a hill overlooking the harbor in the town of Gustavia on St. Barths. The high-end service offered by the property begins with your arrival at the tiny St. Barths airport where hotel staff will collect you and your belongings for the short ride up the hill.
Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf
With only 21 suites, lofts, and a villa to choose from, you can be assured that your visit to Le Carl Gustaf will be extraordinary. The villa and lobby/restaurant sit at the top of the property with the remainder of the private rooms down some stairs from there. Each room has its own private plunge pool and you can even have the staff add a water bike to your pool if you wish to use it for workouts. Your deck is an excellent spot for viewing the gorgeous sunsets that this area of the world is known for or enjoying some sunrise yoga.
Families can book a two-bedroom suite or the large villa allows for even more guests to vacation together, perfect for that multi-generational vacation. Rooms near the top of the property have the best views of the marina, while those located at the bottom of the property would be quieter in the evening hours.
The property is home to Spa Diane Barriere where you can book massages, facials, and other body treatments during your stay. There’s also a fitness room located just off the spa that is available to guests.
Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf/Kate Loweth
Meals are offered at Beefbar, the property’s steakhouse, and you’ll find the breakfast to be something to look forward to. There’s a lovely buffet full of meats, cheeses, fruit, and lots of French pastries like pain au chocolat, madeleines, and canelés. The a la carte menu includes lots of kid-friendly options like Nutella crêpes and waffles.
Come back for the dinner service and you’ll be treated to elevated comfort food with top-notch beef like Black Angus, Kobe, and Wagyu. Favorites from the menu when we visited were the miso caesar salad, KFC (Kobe beef tallow-fried chicken), and the Wagyu bolognese. The menu is full of small shareable plates with something for everyone.
Shell Beach & Shellona Restaurant
Shell Beach/Kate Loweth
Just a 5-minute walk down the hill from the resort is a gorgeous secluded beach and the Shellona Restaurant. Guest of Le Carl Gustaf can have lounge chairs booked here so you’ll have somewhere to relax and enjoy the sand. Pop up to the restaurant for a lunch of fresh seafood and Mediterranean specialties.
Visitors to Shell Beach can rent water toys like kayaks and Seabobs to explore the water offshore. Water shoes are highly recommended at Shell Beach as the shells covering the beach can be quite sharp.
Additional Activities in St. Barths
Families looking to see more of St. Barths while staying at Le Carl Gustaf can book activities with the on-site concierge like fishing, watersports, a catamaran day, and swimming in the island’s natural pools.
Just a 10-minute walk down the hill from Le Carl Gustaf is the town of Gustavia where you’ll find high-end shopping, gelato shops, restaurants, souvenir stores, a grocery store, and so much more. Stop by Le Select, the oldest bar in St. Barths, for a bit of relaxation while you are in town.
How to Get to Le Carl Gustaf
Le Carl Gustaf/Kate Loweth
You can arrive in St. Barths via a ferry from St. Martin or by flying into St. Barths airport via Winair or another carrier. This airport is quite small with a very short runway that only allows for small planes. You’ll need to transfer to a small plane at Juliana Airport (SXM) on the Dutch side of St. Maarten where you’ll take a 10-minute flight with a dramatic landing in St. Barths. On your way home, be sure to have the hotel print your boarding passes for you as paper passes make your transfer at Juliana Airport much quicker.
Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf would be ideal for families with elementary or teenaged kids as the proximity to town and Shell Beach make for easy jaunts off-property. Families with younger kids should note that there are many stairs between the lobby and the suites which could make things tricky for little ones.

Thrifting, bike tours, and museums are on the list
With flight prices to Europe skyrocketing in recent months, our neighbor to the north is becoming a popular destination for family travel. I recently visited Toronto with my teen in tow and found the city to be full of great food, unique museums, street art, and thrift shops. Did you know that Toronto has its own set of islands that you can access via ferry and bike? There’s that and so much more in this easy-to-navigate city—here are my recommendations along with a great hotel that has its own indoor waterslide!
Tour the Toronto Islands via bike.
Just a short ferry ride will take you to the Toronto Islands and our favorite way to explore this area is on a bike. We met up with our group at Toronto Bicycle Tours and headed a few blocks downtown to the ferry terminal where we loaded our bikes on board and set out for a 15-minute ride to the Toronto Islands. After disembarking, we learned a bit of the history of the islands before we set out for our tour. We stopped at points along the way to explore this car-free community. The ride was flat and easy, and they said they could accommodate kids of all ages. It was a trip highlight for both of us!
See a show at Dream at High Park.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream was on stage at Dream at High Park during our visit. After a long day spent walking around the city, we loved chill vibes of this outdoor theatre in a serene park location. Kids sitting next to us ran over to visit the nearby (free!) zoo before the show started and we wished we’d had more time to stop by ourselves. This is the perfect summer activity for families as you can bring in your own dinner or snacks for a picnic during the show. Be sure to get there early as seating is first come-first served.
If you want to grab some delicious eats nearby, we recommend Barque Smokehouse. Smoked meats are the focus with lots of shareable options available. Don’t pass up the sides as the charred broccoli salad and BBQ fries were some of our favorites.
Walk through Kensington Market for some vintage shopping.
Foodies and thrifters will love walking through Kensington Market as there is so much to see. Streets lined with craftspeople drew us in to buy so many pairs of earrings (Can you have too many? We think not.) before we stopped for boba tea and pie (Wanda’s Pie in the Sky is a must.). Our favorite thrift shops were along Kensington Ave. and nearby:
Lost Boys Vintage
Courage My Love
Fashion Old and New
Breathless Vintage
Space Vintage
Shoneys Clothing
Visit some of Toronto’s amazing museums.
Not many teens will list museum visits at the top of their list of vacation favorites but a shoe museum is another story. We stopped by the Bata Shoe Museum where “In Bloom: Flowers and Footwear” was on exhibit. Picture shoes of all shapes and sizes and time periods decked out in florals. You’ll definitely be inspired to up your footwear game after your visit!
Not sure why miniatures are so universally loved by kids, but all ages will enjoy a visit to Little Canada while in Toronto. Walk through this fun exhibit where you can see loads of Canadian cities and a few others as they appear from above. See if you can find your hotel on the Little Toronto model and watch for Maurice the moose to appear throughout.
Head to Yorkdale Shopping Centre for some upscale shopping.
Chelsea Hotel Toronto
Take a break from sightseeing for an activity that the teens are sure to love. It’s easy to hop aboard the TTC to make your way to Yorkdale Mall from the city center. Cafe Landwer is a great spot to start at as you can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine and a brunch menu that’s to die for. You’ll need the fuel for all the shopping you’re about to do!
You’ll find teen-favorite shops like Aerie, UNIQLO, and Artizia here along with everyone’s favorite store for stationery, home decor, and fine-point pens—MUJI. Department store Holt Refrew offers a great selection of Dr. Martens and other teen-friendly clothing brands. Before you head back into the city, stop by Craig’s Cookies for some sweet treats.
The historic Distillery District is a fun spot to visit for some shopping and dining. Go Tours Canada offers a 30-minute tour via Segway that teens and parents love. You’ll get a rundown of the area’s history with specific attention to the historic Victorian buildings that still stand today. They also offer ghost tours via Segway and walking tours for those who prefer to explore on foot.
While you are there, stop by El Catrin Destileria for modern Mexican cuisine. This spot boasts some stunning decor and a massive tequila menu. Order up the guacamole topped with crickets to start and the churros to end your meal of tacos, quesadillas, or chilaquiles.
Other spots to eat when visiting Toronto.
Toronto has a top-notch food scene and you’ll definitely want to bring your appetites when you visit. Here are a few of our favorite dining spots from our visit:
Mandy’s—Focusing on salads and smoothies, this too-cute spot was a favorite after a long day of thrifting. The Ossington Ave. location had some excellent shopping right across the street.
Lao Lao Bar—Shareable plates are on order at this spot that features Lao dishes from satay chicken and mango salad to spring rolls and panang curry. There’s an extensive vegetarian offering if that’s your jam.
Piano Piano—Get all dolled up and plan to spend some time enjoying your meal at the festively fancy Piano Piano. The vodka croquettes were the perfect way to start our meal with the egg yolk ravioli taking center stage for the main. Traditional options like chicken piccata and as well as a family-style menu make this a great spot for groups.
Where to stay when visiting Toronto.
Chelsea Hotel Toronto
The Chelsea Hotel is our go-to spot when visiting Toronto with kids. We love its central location that offers easy walkability to lots of the top tourist spots and TTC access to get you where you need to go. Kids will go crazy over the indoor pool with corkscrew waterslide as well as the property’s Kid Centre with its resident bunnies. And be warned, you may not be able to tear the teens away from the arcade.
Families can spread out in the two-bedroom family fun suite that comes with a kitchen to give you an alternative to dining out. Dining on-site is super easy with both buffet and seated a la carte options available without having to leave the hotel grounds. Be sure to try the hotel’s butter chicken as it is quite delicious!
Chelsea Hotel Toronto
While the teens are enjoying the arcade, parents can visit the adults-only pool and fitness room on the hotel’s top floor. This is also a great spot for viewing the city lights and fireworks if you are lucky!
Make sure to capture all the vacation fun—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

Mt. Scott Indoor Pool
The biggest attraction at Mt. Scott Community Center in the fall and winter months is the fabulous pool which far surpasses the usual lap pool. It’s full of colorful water features, a kiddie “fun” pool, a swirly twirly water slide, a hot tub for the adults, a lazy river for babes, and a whirlpool with gentle currents. Get there on the right day and they might even put out a rope for swinging out over the water Tarzan-style. Sign up for kids' swim lessons or bring the whole family for hours of happy wet squeals during Family Swim.
With a zero-depth pool this center lets children of all levels learn to swim while still being able to stand. If you opt to enroll in swim classes you’re in luck. The instructors are kind, patient, and encouraging. Here just to play? Your family of swimmers will not be disappointed by the plethora of water features designed to splish and splash water from buckets down into the pool.
Make a big splash in the Firstenburg Aquatic Playground. The leisure pool has the longest water slide in Clark County measuring in at 17 feet high. Not feeling that adventurous? No worries. Grab an inner tube and float the lazy river instead. In addition they have a spa, three-lane therapeutic lap pool, and a kid friendly zero-depth entry. Check out the special preschool-specific Aqua Play that usually runs a few times during the week.
Dive into Oregon’s largest wave pool, splash around in the toddler zone, swim laps in the six-lane pool, fearlessly glide down water slides, or relax in the hot tub soaking those aching muscles. North Clackamas Aquatic Park is the perfect destination to escape the icy temps for a day in the always-86-degrees water. There’s truly something for everyone here during Big Surf Recreational Swim time. It’s affordable entertainment and water-focused education. The Aquatic Park also offers swimming lessons, aquatic fitness classes, and party rentals. Although it's not required, pre-registration for open swim is recommended for each 90-minute slot.

Shute Park Aquatic and Recreation Center (SHARC)
Whether you go for a swim or exercise classes this full service aquatic center will thrill both young and old. It offers three full pools, a spa pool and dry sauna, and water classes. The littlest swimmers can easily navigate the beginning depth of only 18 inches and giggle their way around the yellow teacup feature. Check out the preschool water water pool swim time with your tots. If you have bigger more comfortable swimmers there are great places for parents to relax and watch kids explore and play.
This indoor waterpark is an all season experience! It has a bunch of different waterslides—each designed for adventurers of varying age, ability, and courage, and each comes with a witty aero-theme name, like Sonic Boom, Mach 1, and Tail Spin. Daredevils might enjoy the Nose Dive that spits you into a pool and shoots you out backwards. While younger swimmers will enjoy the tamer slides found next to the Space Shuttle mock-up. Once you've had your fill of epic slides, kids can play at Splash Down Harbor, go for a spin in the Vortex Pool, and explore the helicopter-topped, forest-themed, multi-level Aqua Play Area. You'll need a whole day here. And did we mention the park is ADA accessible? This is a big win for all families.
Insider Tip: Purchase your tickets online and in advance to save some dough.
Swim, splash, slide! Great Wolf Lodge is the water park of your dreams. If you can’t stay a whole weekend, do your best to book an overnight experience at least. There are simply not enough hours in the day to experience everything this waterpark has to offer. It’s an hour and a half drive from Portland that will transport you into a fantastic water world of exploration, fun, and adventure. If you can dream it, they’ve got it—including water slides on the exterior of the hotel. Slides, a multi-story treehouse, tunneled family trips on River Canyons, totem towers, floating lily pads, tadpole ponds, and so much more fun. After you’ve swam and hopped from adventure to adventure, hit up the warming pool, and grab some dinner.
Good to Know: Beyond amazing waterpark perks, families can also play mini golf, hit up the arcade, try the outdoor ropes course (during the warmer months), and go on quests of all kinds around the property. Trust us, this is a definite weekend getaway hot spot.

The Royal Uno® property is gorgeous
Kate Loweth
Located in Cancún's Hotel Zone, Royal Uno® is less than 20 minutes from the airport. Make it easy on yourself upon arrival and have the property's on-site travel agency, Thomas More, organize your ride from the airport. That way you can avoid the overwhelming taxi queue with the kids in tow.
You'll feel like you've entered a vacation paradise as soon as you arrive at Royal Uno®with cool drinks and welcoming porters there to greet you. Check in and get your wristbands which will be your way to access your room for the duration of your stay. Send the kids to grab a crêpe or scoop of gelato from the grab-and-go coffee shop in the lobby; they'll be delighted that they can access these treats as much as they want throughout their stay (as parents allow).
Royal Uno® has 540 rooms with amazing beach views where you can catch the sunrise over Cancún's turquoise waters. Upgrade your stay with an Uno Suite that has a king-size bed for parents and a living room with two Murphy beds for the kids. If the beachfront suite is available, definitely go for it as you'll get a balcony with a hammock to lounge in and enjoy the waves crashing. You can even snag a beachfront room that has private access to the sand and your own whirlpool.
All rooms come with a mini fridge that's filled with water, juice, and beers, plus room service any time you wish. A Nespresso coffee maker will make sure you are well caffeinated throughout your stay (even when the kids wake up way too early).
Shaded lounge chairs and a beach bar are available to Royal Uno® guests along the beach with easy access from the pool area. Lifeguards were present during our stay and they seemed very attentive to guests. Definitely plan to head out to the sand if you wake up early because the sunrises are pretty impressive.
Royal Uno Pools
Kate Loweth
The pools are the focal point at Royal Uno with plenty of space to spread out your towel and get some rays. You'll find a swim-up bar ready to serve that margarita or frozen lemonade. Near the swim-up bar is the snack shack where you can get pizzas made to order or snag kid-favorites like hot dogs and nachos.
Little ones will especially love the kids' pool and splash zone where they'll find slides, sprayers, and everyone's favorite—the dump bucket.

The other pool has a more tranquil vibe with loads of shaded lounge chairs surrounding it. There's even a mini pool for the kids right near kids club.

Sandy toes more your thing? The beach at Velas Vallarta is right beyond the pool and easy to access from your suite. Shaded lounge chairs are available if you want to set up camp for the day.
In addition to 24-hour room service, Velas Vallarta has top-notch dining with plenty of variety for kids. We recommend getting your lunch served poolside with taquitos topping the favorites list for both kids and parents. Upscale dinner vibes are on tap at Restaurante Andrea where the menu changes from Asian to Italian and more depending on the night.
Kids Club at Velas Vallarta
Velas Vallarta
Kids ages 4 to 12 can take part in activities through the on-site Kids Club, all included as part of your stay. There are also tennis and pickleball courts, a fitness room, and a nearby golf course.
If you time your visit right, you might even get to join in a sea turtle release as there's a protected nest right near the resort!
Things to Do near Velas Vallarta
Kate Loweth
When you are ready to venture off-property, the hotel can arrange transportation to get you to the trendy Zona Romántica or wherever you'd like to visit. For a feel of a real neighborhood with a central square, church, and shops, head to Pitillal and spend a few hours walking the town. The kids will love all the paleta vendors (go for the melon for a refreshing treat) and you can snag some huaraches to bring home with you.
Getting to Puerto Vallarta and the Resort
Kate Loweth
Velas Vallarta is conveniently located next to Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport and you can easily take direct flights there from Dallas, LA, SF, and many other U.S. cities. You can prearrange pickup from the airport with the resort for less than $20 and they will have VIP Transfers waiting for you upon arrival. This is key when traveling with kids because the airport can be a bit hectic and overwhelming after a long flight. A 15-minute ride will have you at the resort in no time with a margarita to welcome you.
If a week or weekend filled with adventure, art, museums, and maritime fun sounds like a recipe for an epic family vacation, then it’s time to take your crew to Astoria! Whether you are yearning for adrenaline pumping fun, a little education with your adventures, or some hands on fun, this Oregon coastal city has it all. Grab your young seaman and seawomen, pack up the car and scroll down to find out all about the fun we dug up that makes for an epic Astoria getaway.
Astoria
A gorgeous two-hour drive from Portland, Astoria is located near the coast at the mouth of the Columbia River. A port city that was once a thriving boomtown during the late-19th century when large immigrant populations primarily made up of Scandinavians and the Chinese flocked to the area to work in the canning and fishing industries, Astoria has since become a beloved destinations for active families and avid Oregon history buffs. With easy access to the Columbia River and Oregon Coast beaches; a multitude of art and historical museums; plenty of cute shopping spots and easy access to outdoor activities—your clan will have a hard time fitting in everything there is to do.
Play
The Astoria Column
One of your first stops while staying in Astoria should be the iconic Astoria Column. Overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River from its stone base on the top of Coxcomb Hill in Astoria, the Astoria Column is a 91 year old tower that was built in 1926 as part of a 30-acre city park. The trek to the top takes visitors a jaw-dropping 600 feet above sea level, where your family can take in breathtaking views of Young's Bay, the Coast Range, the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean
Getting to the top of the column is a surprisingly thrilling activity. Entering through a small doorway your family will take a winding metal staircase with 164 steps that shoots straight to the top where a second doorway takes you out to a viewing deck. The trip up and the views are surprisingly exhilarating and give your crew the opportunity for a little adrenaline rush if they dare to step out to the edge. Be prepared for some wind and if they skies are clear you will be able to see for miles and miles and miles.
Fun Fact! The column itself is a stunning work of art that will enchant imaginations both young and old while serving up a small history lesson. Its design was inspired by the Trajan Column in Rome and the spiraling artwork was created using a technique called sgraffito—an Italian art form. If unwound, the length of the artwork would be more than 500 feet long and at the top of the column your little explorers will find the State Seal of Oregon.

The Columbia River Maritime Museum
When you are done at the column, grab your little sailors, and head straight to The Columbia River Maritime Museum. This historical spot explores the history of the Columbia River from the days of dugout canoes, through the age of sail, to present. Visitors witness stories of the legendary Columbia River Bar, one of the most dangerous passages in the world. Your kids will love explore boats, legendary fishing runs, lighthouses, the science of storms and more.
Located on the city's waterfront, the Maritime Museum is home to artifacts from the Columbia River and the Pacific Northwest. It currently has 22,000+ objects, 35,000+ photographs, and a 20,000+ volume research library. Your little crewmen and crewgirls will love exploring The United States lightship Columbia docked just outside the museum. The Columbia served as a floating lighthouse and was stationed 5.3 statute miles from the mouth of the Columbia River from 1951 until 1979 when it was decommissioned. It is the first vessel in Oregon to be placed on the National Register and your kids are sure to enjoy seeing where it's inhabitants slept, ate and relaxed.
High Life Adventures
Feel the need for speed? Your young (and older) adrenaline junkies will enjoy an experience of a lifetime with an incredible and unforgettable zip line adventure at High Life Adventures. This tour isn't just for adults and teens. Children weighing 60 pounds or more can brave the zip lines on their own. For smaller kids or children who are feeling timid, there's the option to zip tandem with a parent.
High Life Adventures is located approximately 15 minutes from Astoria in Warrenton, Oregon. This zip line tour takes you on eight zip lines that run through timber and over ponds and a lake. It starts with shorter and easier zips, that slowly increase in length allowing the kiddos to build up to being brave. Then the height and thrill increases as the tour progresses. By the time you and your young adventurers find yourself stepping off of a 75 foot tower, you will have already built up a tolerance for the the rush. If you aren't quite done with the thrills and excitement at the end of your zip, try axe throwing. Family members 12 years and up can take their turn throwing axes at a target for upto an hour!
Astoria Art Loft
The Astoria Art Loft is guarunteed to bring out the artist in everyone! Your family can attend fused glass, drawing and watercolor painting classes for artists of all ages and experience. Plan an artsy night out with family.
Shop
You can't leave Astoria without hitting the quirky and cute local shops. Check out Astoria’s Underground Shops. Below the surface, in an underground village, a collective of local artists, makers and proprietors offer a unique experience for visitors that stumble down the stairs. You'll be entertained in this cool spot for hours. Be sure to check out Weird Sisters for unique and unusual finds and Kit's Apothecary for one-of-a-kind gifts and memorabilia.
Lucy’s Books is the perfect spot for the readers in the family. It's packed with all things bookish. You'll be able to find all of the books on your reading list and they are located in Downtown Astoria in the historic Sanborn Building. Finally, Forsythea is a great little must-see spot for browsing unique home and garden décor by local artists.
Bowline Hotel
The Bowline Hotel
Why not enjoy a little luxury when you book your basecamp stay in Astoria? Located right on the river, The Bowline Hotel is the place to be if you want front seat views to a water show that includes river pilot boats, freighters and an abundance of sea life right outside your door. Don't let the industrial aesthetic fool you. This gorgeous spot is a sardine cannery that has been turned into a lux hotel that is home to 40 rooms that feature plush king beds, luxury linens, flickering fireplaces, tubs and French press coffee to start your mornings with. You can choose between river view or Trolley view rooms and you don't have to go far to enjoy delectable bites because the hotel has an on-sight restaurant and bar—The Knot.
The Knot Bar offers guests locally sourced menu items that are Scandinavian-inspired and pay homage to Astoria's seafood history. Some of our favorites include the Oregon beef tartare, Tre Fin Black Cod, and the Crepe Cannelloni. That's not all! Mom and dad can enjoy deliciously handcrafted cocktails that celebrate local distilleries.
While the luxurious features that the Bowline offers make it a fantastic option for families visiting Astoria, the location is a huge bonus. If you and your crew like to explore by foot, the Bowline Hotel is walking distance from incredible restaurants, cafes, event venues, and all the shopping you could hope for. You can easily spend a day (or weekend) without getting into your car once.
Eat
Street 14 Café serves more than coffee, it's brunch is a must for hungry families. Grab a sunrise sandwich a breakfast a brisket bowl or some French toast. There's literally something for every appetite! Start your day with their coffee, then come back for wine and cocktails after exploring Astoria. Head to South Bay Wild Fish Houseis a family-owned restaurant featuring a menu of the freshest seafood dishes caught straight from their local fishing vessel. Enjoy ceviche, tuna poke, and incredible fish tacos. Don't forget to order the kiddos the kids root beer float.
The Astoria Bistro & Coffeehouse is a bustling European-style coffee shop and sit-down spot serving baked pastries, breakfast, lunch and Café Vita coffee. But breakfast isn't all this spot offers. At night it becomes an intimate bistro offering offering neo-regional cuisine using direct caught seafood, all natural meats and wild local produce "foraged" from the area.
If mom and dad have the opportunity to sneak out and steal a romantic hour or two away from the kids, with over 200 whiskeys to sip, craft cocktails and shareable food boards the Blaylock's Whiskey Bar is the perfect spot for one-on-one time. WineKraft is another great choice. Offering spectacular views of the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean, it is a PNW specialty wine bar, featuring Pacific Northwest wines but you can also sip beer and cider from the area with their six rotating draft offerings.

Mammoth Mountain
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area
Hit the slopes to snowboard and ski at the 3,500 acres of Mammoth Mountain. You can tube it at Woolly's Tube Park, or even ride a snowmobile. A good family stay-over is The Village Lodge, where you can walk to the gondola and cook meals in a full kitchen. Your crew will be cozy in a two-bedroom condo which sleeps six. After a day of snow fun, warm up at the heated pool and five hot tubs. Another option is the Mammoth Creek Inn, although you'll need to shuttle to the slopes. Here you'll get a complimentary breakfast and the rooms can sleep six. Notably, there's a spa, steam room, sauna, gym and jacuzzi. Plus, the fam can play board games by the cozy lobby fire.

Big Bear Mountain is a winter wonderland full of activities and sports for your whole family. Whether your crew is full of beginners or advanced snow sports athletes, you'll find something for everyone. For example, beginning pint-sized shredders can take snowboard lessons (from four years old and up!) designed to make learning fun. On the other hand, more avid skiers and snowboarders can take a half or full day lesson at either Bear Mountain or Snow Summit.
Big Bear has a new Visitor's Center that's a great resource for families. Visit the permanent kiosk in the visitor center, where a BigBear Mountain Resort representative is available daily to assist with lift ticket purchases and equipment fittings making for a seamless check-in process once you hit the slopes.
Also new and noteworthy: Big Bear Mountain Resort's Bear Mountain has expanded its sun deck from 13,000 sq. ft. to 26,000 sq. ft., creating additional space for outdoor seating, dining, special events/concerts and more.
Additionally, a perfect addition of off mountain activities is the new 2-story ropes course at Big Bear Snow Play: The 2-level ropes course, which opened in August, includes an 80-foot zip line and a number of challenges to reward and excite young and old alike. State-of-the-art safety harnesses will keep guests secure as they traverse the course, the first and only one of its kind in Big Bear.
Don't miss a visit to the Bear Mountain Adventure Academy. It makes it easy on families by having kids' ski rentals, lift tickets and sports school registration in one spot. Further, there are fun things to do while waiting like coloring and a Burton snowboard practice game. Even more, you'll find food and drink including artisan pizzas, a full-service coffee bar and spirits. Also, you'll appreciate the parent viewing area where you can watch your half-pint learn to ski or snowboard.
On the other hand, if your snow angels want to skip the lift lines and go tubing, slide over to the Grizzly Ridge Tube Park at Snow Summit or Big Bear Snow Play (both with Magic Carpet conveyor belts) for easy downhill fun.
Another flurry of activities can be found at the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain. First, grab your little one and bobsled together down the 1/4 mile long mountain track. Second, ride the Soaring Eagle where you fly through the sky at up to 28 mph! Then, you can tube down the Alpine Slide and play in the snow. Finally, you can play miniature golf and try the go-karts. Your crew will have a blast!
Plus, two good places to stay as a family are The Lodge at Big Bear Lake with free Wi-Fi and a walk to the village or Big Bear Frontier where we recommend the cabins that sleep up to 12––and furry friends are welcome too.

This smaller mountain is great for snow angels at the beginner or intermediate level. It's also less crowded than big brother mountain (Big Bear) which is 30 minutes further away. For the little ones, there's the Children's Learning Center with full and half-day classes where snow bunnies can learn to ski or snowboard (ages 4-12). However, if you decide to stay overnight, we recommend the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, with a fitness room and restaurant. (It's about a 30-minute drive).

Hike around a giant extinct volcano at this park in the city limits! Powell Butte is a beautiful place for a hike, with wooded paths, meadows, and perfect views of surrounding peaks on clear days. Starting at the small visitor center kiosk it’s an easy trek to the top on the paved path. There you’ll find a viewing platform pointing out the nine different mountains encircling you, including Mount Jefferson, Adams, St. Helens, and even Rainier. From there, you can follow the hiking trails around the back of the park into the forests or turn around and wind through the grassy meadows instead. The summit is a 0.7 mile hike, and the whole loop is about 2.9 miles. Spring sees wildflowers galore on the hills, and with them comes the buzz of bees and flutter of butterflies.

Try to count how many different trees you can find in Hoyt Arboretum, we dare you! With 2300 species and over 12 miles of trails, it’s quite the challenge. Whether you can count that high or not, you’ll find plenty of easy hikes on the hills near the Oregon Zoo and Children’s Museum. There’s something for every time of year– in spring, find the 0.3 mile Magnolia Trail between Wildwood and Oak Trails for a great view of the flowering trees. There’s also cherry blossoms, dogwood flowers, and Japanese snow-bells. Don’t forget to look down for early trilliums!
Start your visit in the parking lot (it’s a pay lot, avoid the hunt and cost by taking the Max or even biking), then head to the Visitor’s Center for a kid’s map and scavenger hunt flyer with fun activities.

It’s not a long trail or hike, but for a quick afternoon out in nature, it’s a perfect escape. Start on the bluffs at the small parking lot, then wander down the bluff– turn right to head around the pond for the 2.3 mile loop. The path is well kept, with bridges, boardwalks, and viewing platforms that extend over the wetlands. In the small loop at Tadpole Pond kids will find plenty of places to look for the little creatures along with salamanders and birds.
The park is near the Springwater Corridor, Sellwood Riverfront Park, and Oaks Bottom Amusement Park if you need to extend your day of fun at all.
Stay fueled with healthy bites and sips. Try something from one of the healthy local smoothie stops.
Harlow
Amidst the hustle and bustle of Hawthorne, there’s a stately-yet-kid-friendly respite in this vegan-friendly, gluten-free establishment. The list of smoothies is impressive (we hear good things about the strawberry-avocado with maca, date and hemp seeds), but you’ll be just as glad to see a 12-ounce peanut butter and jelly smoothie on the kids’ menu. You can find similar menus at Harlow’s sister restaurants, Prasad and Prasad East.
Canteen
Canteen is the brick-and-mortar evolution of the Sip Juice cart that started a “vegan milkshake” revolution a few years ago. With three locations across Portland and a variety of Juice and smoothie options they’re popular for a reason. Kids will love that the “Orange One” is like a creamsicle, with orange and vanilla, and you’ll be glad it’s naturally sweetened with banana and dates. Everything here is vegan.
