Ahh, conversation hearts. As a kid, there was nothing quite like sneaking one across the desk to your crush. Now, as a parent, you can create a (much) tastier version with your kids at home. Confetti Cakes, a mom-owned cake company, is selling an at-home baking kit, and yup, it’s in the form of a giant conversation heart! If this gives you the warm fuzzies, keep reading to find out how to get one in time for Valentine’s Day.

What It Is

This lovable cake kit is designed by Elisa Strauss, the pastry chef behind Confetti Cakes. She's been making cakes for over 20 years and is the author of two cookbooks, and last year, she added cake kits to her repertoire. Elisa says, “Creating a baking kit has been a dream of mine for over a decade! I love teaching, and I want people to feel that they can create amazing cakes at home. Also, being a mom of 3 young kids, I see how wonderful it is to have a fun project to do—especially around sweets. The most important thing in childhood is to make memories. I hope I am helping people to do that whether they are 6 yrs or 106!”

The conversation heart kit sold out in 2021, but it's back and available now. If you’re worried about procuring fancy cake-baking ingredients, don’t be. You’ll get almost everything you need to make the giant conversation hearts: vanilla or chocolate cake mix, buttercream frosting mix, stencils, cake molds, fondant and more. You just need to provide the eggs, milk, oil and butter!

How Do You Get One?

If you want the kit to be delivered before Feb. 14, be sure to place your ASAP. Each kit is $65 (plus $12 for shipping), and there’s an option to send one as a gift, which is perfect if you aren’t able to see your loved ones.

15 Vintage Birthday Cakes Like Grandma Used to Make

The Halloween season is officially in full swing at the Happiest Place on Earth—which means it’s time to enjoy one of Disney’s best Halloween traditions: Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion Gingerbread House. Read on to see all of the spooktacular photos of this one-of-a-kind tradition.

Disneyland is celebrating its 18th season of its Haunted Mansion Holiday. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas—which serves as the delightfully creepy inspiration for the Haunted Mansion’s revamped holiday look from Halloween through January of each year.

A gigantic haunted gingerbread house is always part of the ghostly festivities, with the house sitting as a creepy, but tasty-looking, centerpiece on the dining table in the Grand Hall. The house, which features a 5-foot gingerbread spider suspended above it, took 12 pastry chefs at the Disneyland Central Bakery over a month to complete. The team used 90 pounds of gingerbread, 30 pounds of confectioner’s sugar and 45 pounds of fondant to complete this year’s house.

“We wanted to create a monster movie vibe, and a scary spider is a classic and iconic Halloween image,” said Tim Wollweber, associate art director for Disney Parks. But the fun doesn’t just stop at the clutches of one hungry spider.

“With that in mind, we designed a giant 5-foot spider with eerie glowing eyes and moving legs and mandibles. This multicolor spider is suspended above the Haunted Mansion’s Grand Hall table, attempting to pry the edible mansion from its foundation, revealing candy cane rebar and sparking lights. General chaos ensues as gingerbread zombies watch in astonishment and cocoon-wrapped gingerbread zombies wait to become spider snacks.” Whoa!

Visitors to the Haunted Mansion can catch a glimpse of the Gingerbread House from now until January 2019.

New York’s a great town for planning a kid’s birthday party — the options are almost literally endless — but after a few years (and maybe the addition of another celebrant) it can start to feel like you’ve done it all. If you can relate, or maybe just want a seasoned pro to do the planning for you, you may be interested in a new partnership between NYC institution City Bakery (and its little sister venture Birdbath) and Piece of Cake parties.

photo: Marielle Solan/Piece of Cake Parties

Getting The Party Started

The festive new venture combines the forces of City Bakery/Birdbath owner Maury Rubin and Jenny Flax, the woman behind Piece of Cake Parties. Rubin opened a Birdbath café — which prides itself on being one of the most-eco-friendly food businesses on the planet —  in the space attached to kid’s bookstore Books of Wonder; Flax has been orchestrating  deluxe custom party packages for Manhattan families for over 10 years. Now, Piece of Cake will be offering turn-key baking-themed party packages in the Birdbath space. (Don’t worry, you won’t have random kids running through your party; the café space is currently exclusively devoted to hosting events.)

photo: Marielle Solan/Piece of Cake Parties

What’s Cooking

Three kinds of culinary-themed parties are available, all of which find kids getting hands-on experience making tasty treats with organic, locally-sourced ingredients. Revelers can decorate cakes, make pizza, or craft pretzels, and additional party activities in turn reflect that theme. More than just a slap-some-frosting-and sprinkles on a cupcake kind of affair, the Piece of Cake at City Bakery/Birdbath parties will reflect the homegrown, classic and culinary-conscious ethos of the City Bakery brand.

All parties will include a brief tour of the attached industrial kitchen where the cakes, pretzels and dough that are used for the projects are made, and learn a little something on the side, too. Cake decorators will receive their own six-inch cake to decorate, with a professional cake decorator on hand to demonstrate how to make fondant roses or piping techniques. Pretzel-makers will have the chance to make both sweet and savory snacks (while learning about the science of combining yeast and flour) and pizza chefs roll out crust and top their creations with fresh ingredients grown locally and cooked on site.

photo: Marielle Solan/Piece of Cake Parties

Beyond Baking

The parties aren’t just about making stuff to eat. Partiers play games such as “Baking Bingo” or take part in a game show dedicated to the party’s inspiration which draws upon information offered earlier.  (i.e. “At what temperature are most cakes baked?”) Kids also get to move with things like “Cooking Calisthenics” and be crafty when they decorate the boxes in which they’ll ferry home their edible creations.

The Nitty Gritty

Piece of Cake/Birdbath celebrations are best for kids ages five to 11; Flax, who has a background in education, scales the sophistication of each activity for different age groups. Additional elements, such as personalized aprons or an on-site photographer can be purchased as well, and the recommended size for parties is 10 to 20 kids. Fees for an hour and a-half party start at $1,100.
