From malls and parks to drive-worthy experiences, here are the best places to take photos with Santa in San Diego—some will even pose with your pet

There are so many fun, family activities happening this time of year, whether you’re shopping for your Christmas tree in San Diego, wandering around town to catch all the must-see holiday lights nearby, or seeing which favorite holiday show should be on your wish-list this year. Of course don’t forget to make time to mingle with good ole St. Nick. The sun might be out (with no snow in sight) but Santa Claus is coming to town, and chances are, you’re looking for some memory-making photo ops. From malls and parks to an entire village dedicated to the man, we’ve rounded up our must-go spots to see Santa near San Diego.

1. Santa's Village at SkyPark

If you haven't ever done it, we definitely recommend heading up to SkyPark at Santa’s Village, at least once in your lifetime. The whole village comes into its own and lights up for a jolly good time. From breakfast with Santa to tea with Mrs. Claus, you can get as little or as much Santa in your life as you want. For photo-ops, make a reservation online to save your spot and prevent disappointments. Of course, that’s not all—there’s ice skating and a dazzling light show that takes place at the park as well. You might even get snow while your here—a true Christmas miracle for SoCal residents.

2. Photos with Santa at Seaport Village

Capture the magic of the holiday season in a photo with Seaport’s resident Santa Claus in a delightful San Diego waterfront setting on the harbor. Families can strike a pose with jolly Kris Kringle—in front of the Chris Harvey Gallery—no appointment necessary. This spot also has 54 retail shops—get your Christmas shopping done while you're here.

3. San Diego Zoo's Jungle Bells

The San Diego Zoo's holiday celebration, Jungle Bells (Dec. 9-Jan. 1), has all the Christmas fixings you might be looking for: holiday photos with Dr. Harry Lion, Churchill Polar Bear, and Sydney Koala, a juggling Jack Frost, live holiday music, acrobatic elves, strolling Holiday Troubadours, and, of course, photos with the big guy. You'll find Santa (and his factory), in the Lost Forest—at the Price Education Center, to be specific.

4. Santa's Treehouse

Skip the lines and spend some quality time with Mr. and Mrs. Claus in their treehouse. In addition to the professional photo session with Santa, kids will have time to chat about what's on their wish lists, tour the tree house, sit by the fire place, and even have a seat in the big man's chair. Claim your spot at this popular event—offered by reservation only.

Good to Know: This is a fundraising event so the proceeds help sponsor families in need.

5. Surfin Santa at Seaport Village

Old St. Nick is ditching the heavy red suit and will be breaking out his board shorts and Hawaiian shirt for the 15th annual Surfin’ Santa celebration at Seaport Village. If your family would like to take some not-so-wintery photos with the jolly surfer himself, he'll be hanging in his lifeguard tower, ready to snap a few poses. Photos with Santa start at 1:45 p.m. Named one of the 10 best Santa sightings by USA Today, the event begins at noon with live music and entertainment

6. Santa Visits the Forum

Every Sat. and Sun. through Dec. 18, you can stop by to see Santa at The Forum Carlsbad. Find St. Nick in the Garden Area between YETI and Allbirds, and bring your camera. Visits are complimentary. Guests can also enjoy holiday characters on Sat. and strolling carolers on Sun. from 1-4 p.m.

7. Santa Cares Day at The Shoppes at Carlsbad

Children within all spectrums of special needs and their families are welcome to visit Santa during Santa Cares Day at The Shoppes at Carlsbad. The event takes place before the mall opens on Dec. 4 for a sensory-friendly, less hectic event to experience the time-honored tradition of a visit and photos with Santa. This unique opportunity is specially designed to create a comfortable and inviting environment so all children can feel comfortable with Santa. Reservations are encouraged.

8. Santa Paws Pet Night at Westfield UTC

Santa is available for photos throughout the month (beginning Nov. 17-Dec. 24) but on special nights, he'd love to meet your favorite four-legged pal. Westfield UTC invites families to enjoy the the special Santa Paws Pet Night, a fun, furry twist on the time-honored tradition of taking photos with the man in the big red suit—although everyone is welcome, even without pets. The mall will also collect donations these evenings on behalf of The Humane Society. Reservations recommended.

9. Photos with Santa at Hotel del Coronado

If you are looking for a more refined setting to meet with Old St. Nick this holiday season, visit him at the sprawling Hotel Del Coronado. Here you can take a picture with him in the charming Garden Patio that sits in the central courtyard of a majestic Victorian building. For those that simply can't wait to see the big guy, head over to the hotel's holiday festival on Dec. 7. Online reservations required.

10. Christmas in the Park

Don’t miss your chance to visit with Santa at Old Poway Park. This free event will take you back in time with caroling, live music, and horse-drawn hayrides. You can also purchase holiday treats, shop at the craft boutique, or board the Poway Midland Railroad for a night-time ride around the park. Free shuttles to and from the event will be available from two locations: Poway City Hall parking lot and Poway Adult School parking lot.

As if any month in the fall isn’t busy enough, November packs it all in with holidays and observances, autumn activities, and Christmas kick-off events. But if you figured you’d have to spend a pretty penny to participate, your wallet is in luck: in this list, you’ll find dozens of free events for families and kids in Washington, DC and beyond.

But where to begin with so many options? Consider Jump-starting November with the National Gallery’s annual Day of the Dead celebration, honoring veterans with a free concert at the MLK Memorial Library, or paying tribute to Native American Indian Heritage Month by exploring an exhibit at the National Museum of the American Indian. Or you can soak in the last of fall with self-guided hikes and free passes to our National Parks. The most visited museum in DC is home to more than just dinosaurs. You’ll find a dazzling gem collection, a popular earthquake simulator, mammal displays, human cultural artifacts and a butterfly pavilion you can explore for free on Tuesdays.

Exhibit space Q?rius is temporarily closed, but it’s such a perfect stop for the 10-and-under set that it’s worth keeping on your radar. Housed inside the Natural History Museum, it offers drawers brimming with curiosities. Your pint-sized explorer will enjoy digging through drawers filled with rocks, minerals, insects and more. When your kids are done exploring the natural world, they can explore the cultures of the world in the same space! There are also drawers filled with clothing and dolls from other countries.

In addition to housing Indigenous artifacts, visitor’s can explore the history of Native foods at the museum’s cafe, Mitsitam. The interactive gallery imagiNATIONS helps children 10 and under connect with the stories and histories of Native nations.

imagNATIONS – On the third level of the National Museum of the American Indian, you’ll find the imagiNATIONS Activity Center, where kids learn how to interact with the environment around them. They’ll weave baskets from different material, see different types of houses made from wood or mud, and even learn to walk in snowshoes! National Museum of American History
The collection of Smithsonian museums are a treasure trove of exploration, but for hands-on, interactive fun make a bee-line for Wegman’s Wonderplace where the youngest visitors (0 to 6) can explore pint-sized versions of the Smithsonian’s most popular exhibits, from a kid-sized version of Julia’s kitchen to a smaller version of The Castle. Spark!Lab — for ages of 6 and 12 — lets visitors explore the invention process from start to finish.

If you’ve never checked out the National Postal Museum (or didn’t even know it existed), you’re not alone–many locals overlook this NoMa gem for its flashier counterparts on the National Mall. But, for kids, this free Smithsonian Institution is a slam dunk since the museum encourages visitors to feel, climb into, sit in, and throw–yes, throw!–many of its exhibits.

Hirschorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
The preschool set can fight the chill and take part in the Hirshorn’s library and art pop up program on any given Saturday this fall. It’s easy peasey to do too. Grab a parent’s hand and find a gallery cart full of fun kits with real finds. Each kit combines a special theme with adventures in reading, suggested artwork to view and real hands-on art materials to help little ones create their own masterpieces.

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
If rockets and airplanes are your kids’ things, then the Air and Space Museum in Dulles, VA, is the next stop on your fall bucket list. First, visit the vast plane hangar where the Space Shuttle Discovery and a Concorde are on display. Then, ride in a flight simulator and sit inside the cockpit of a vintage aircraft. Head upstairs to the top level, and your crew can learn about air traffic control and watch planes fly in and out of the local airport.

Insider tip: The museum is free, but there is a $15 charge for parking. Head to this museum after 4 p.m. and parking is free.

Fiestas Partrias: Immerse yourself in Old Town San Diego this fall to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. The festivities begin with a traditional bell ringing, and then let the dancing begin with historic and lively music. Kids and parents alike will enjoy the 19th century crafts in the gardens of La Casa Estudillo including paper flowers and creating cacarones—colorful confetti-filled eggs. More games and early settler information demonstrations will be throughout the park. Then eat a taco or enchilada at the famous Fiesta De Reyes and explore all the cool shops. One kid favorite is the Miner's Gems and Mineral shop, where they can pan for precious stones for a fee.

Bates Nut Farm Pumpkin Patch: Fall fun! The Big Bay Boom July 4th Fireworks Show
The Big Bay Boom bash is back with amazing fireworks over the San Diego Bay. What’s unique about this extravaganza is the fireworks are lit from several coastal locations, including Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Embarcadero North and Coronado Ferry Landing. The show is always popular, so consider carpooling or take the San Diego Trolley. Event Details.

Coronado
Bring the kids and enjoy an entire weekend of patriotic activities on Coronado Island. The Annual Independence Day Parade in Coronado takes place on July 4th at 10:00 down Orange Ave. Watch the Legends in the Sky above Coronado on July 4th at 2 p.m. The United States Navy Parachute Team “The Leap Frogs” is the official parachute demonstration team of the United States Navy. Enjoy a Public Kids Concert from 4 pm - 5 pm and then end the evening with a fireworks display over Glorietta Bay. Julian
While it’s true Julian is known for apples and mining, the town also has an old-fashioned 4th of July day planned. Camp out on Main Street for a day of family fun at “the best little town parade in America.” This year’s theme is ”Historic Julian Celebrates the 4th." This year you’ll see marching bands and bands including the Emerald Society Bag Pipe Band, Gold Drum and Bugle Corps and Mariachi Continental de San Diego. Antique cars, vintage tractors, belly dancers, World War 2 Submariners, and several comedy entries will appear to complete a fun well-rounded hometown parade. Celebrate Independence Day at Brengle Terrace Park and enjoy a fun-filled Fourth of July BBQ dinner. The summer heats up at LEGOLAND® California Resort with a star-spangled Fourth of July celebration: Red, White and Boom! Throughout the day, kids of all ages can participate in all-American family picnic games and building activities. The evening fireworks show combines patriotic music with dazzling pyrotechnics. Del Mar

The annual celebration in honor of Oceanside’s July 3rd birthday and Independence Day will take place this year. Fireworks will begin at 9:00 p.m. on July 3 at El Corazon. Residents are encouraged to enjoy the show from home, but limited capacity viewing areas will be available near El Corazon to spread out. Rancho Del Oro will be closed from Oceanside Boulevard to Mesa, and Ocean Ranch will be closed from Corporate Center to Rancho Del Oro beginning at 5:00 p.m. that evening. Event Details.

With 11 locations all over the Bay Area from San Francisco to Santa Clara, Books, Inc. is the oldest independent bookstore since opening back in 1851. Story time sessions range in themes and ages from the Pajama Party for the 3-6 year old set to the Tidbits for the under 3 years old.

Good to know: On beautiful SF afternoons, bring a picnic lunch to the gardens and enjoy the picturesque surroundings after story time.

The Reading Bug

This independent family-owned bookstore is so adorable you might not want to leave. Designed to look like an enchanted forest with toadstool and leaf seating, story times take place in the back where your little ones can sing, listen and laugh through books.

Good to know: Sunday storytime is for the 3 & up crowd and includes fun (and free) crafts.

Diesel Bookstore

With a variety of books from the tried and true classics to the fresh-off-the-press new favorites, this bookstore has about every book you could possibly want to read. Story time is fun and casual, and recommended for the 5 & under set.

Good to know: The bookstore is located in a shopping center with a farmers market, café and even a yoga studio. It's a great spot for some afternoon shopping and lunch!

With locations in San Francisco, Mill Valley and Palo Alto, this carefully curated childrens store comes with a side of shopping. The SF location has teamed up with JAMaROO for stories ranging from fables to fairytales with the fun addition of puppets and even dance for the 2-5 set.

Good to know: Drop-in classes are $15/child or $20 for sibilings. Cash preferred as there is a $2 credit card processing fee.

Asian Art Museum

With several story times held throughout the week, kids as young as three can get a dose of culture at this amazing museum. Stories for the 7 & up is themed to the main exhibit while those 5 & up can partake in an extra activity session with an Elements of Art Explorer Pack. Story time is free with museum admission and kids 12 & under are always free.

Good to know: Head to the museum on the first Sunday of the month for their Target First Free Sundays!
