When unused stuff is piling up…

It’s amazing how much gear kids require. From their first bucket carseat through their last pair of soccer cleats, there’s a constant flow of outgrown and no-longer-used stuff cycling through our homes. Who has the time to sort through the piles and pass them along, donate them or try to sell them online? That’s what inspired one Pacific Northwest dad to create Sella. An online service that pairs busy families with expert sellers so you can “turn your clutter into cash.” The process is pretty simple. Gather up all that unused Kindle, the baby carrier your kiddo has outgrown, or the baby monitor you don’t need anymore, because baby (finally!) sleeps through the night. Then ship it all out to Sella. They take it from there, snapping pics, listing it on different sites, and writing the listing. All that’s left is for you to approve the listing and wait for it to sell. What will you do with all that free time and space?

Insider Tip: Sella has plans to launch locally in Seattle so parents can drop-off items in person soon, but for now mail-in is how to get things done.

When your bookshelf needs a boost…

How lucky are we that Seattle is home to so many amazing indie bookstores? Some love to leave new books in Free Little Libraries around town. Some host storytimes and author meet and greets for kids. Others help parents keep their kid’s bookshelf fresh with a monthly subscription box. We’re big fans of Phinney Books’ Phinney By Post Kids program that delivers a new picture book to your doorstep monthly or every other month. What could be easier? The books are aimed at kids ages birth through five, and are hand-selected by the discerning staff at Phinney Books. While they have a lot things they take into consideration when selecting the books, the one that matters most to parents is that your kids will want to read it over and over and over again.

Insider Tip: If you’re short on time, but aren’t quite sold on a new book a month, call your local bookstore to get recommendations. Trust us, they know their stuff and have spot-on picks for every kid.

When your kiddo needs something new to do…

If you’ve got a toddler you know how quickly they move from one toy to the next. They’re a physical embodiment of the “ohh! squirrel!” phenomenon. And while we know how much you’d love to spend all day playing dress-up, reading stories, or heading out on the next pretend Paw Patrol rescue with them, there’s only so much time in a day to play. Enter Sensa Play Rentals, a parent-owned, Seattle company that makes gorgeous sensory play kits for kids, delivers them to your door, and even picks them up one week later. It’s what every kid wants (and every parent needs).

Inventive dinner ideas, like Asian Chicken & Waffles or Simple and Easy Spam Musubi are kid crowd-pleasers that fill them up just in time to shuttle them out the door (or maybe off to bed?) again.

When you missed your trip to the Farmer’s Market…

Although you had high hopes for your pandemic garden, it’s a little overgrown at this point. And strolling the Farmer’s Market just isn’t in the cards this week. Let local Seattle farmers help get fresh produce from their fields to your fridge when you sign up for a fall or winter CSA share. In fact, it’s the right time to sign up for the next share with local farms like Skylight Farms, Local Color Farm & Fibre, Jubilee and Full Circle. (Hint: These are just a few of the local area farms growing fresh veggies right now). Then it’s as easy as picking them up on your way home from work (or after your last playdate) to have your fridge stocked for the week ahead.

Raddish Kids, the popular kids culinary kit, is offering families free Cupid-themed cooking kits that they can gift to someone special, because it’s way more rad to share free food kits than Covid. And let’s be honest––they’re a lot cooler than that box of Valentine’s Day cards you keep meaning to pick up at the store (but forgetting).

Twenty thousand kits will be available for families to gift at raddishkids.com/radlove at 10 a.m. PST on Feb. 4th. For every kit gifted, Raddish will donate $1 to World Central Kitchen, an organization dedicated to nourishing communities in times of crisis and beyond.

When schools closed in 2020, Raddish gave away 50,000 cooking kits to families in an effort to provide engaging activities for children. And, this month’s free giftable experience is part of Raddish Kids’ “Food is Love” campaign, which gives you access to a digital calendar with activities and recipes your kids can make to show love and kindness throughout the month. 11 Restaurants with Pre-Meal Distractions to Keep Kiddos Happy

8 Super Family Date Spots in San Diego

The only thing more daunting then the simple question “What’s for dinner?” is the more complicated  “Where should we eat?” Finding a restaurant that offers a stress-free dining experience (think picky-eater-approved menu options and a low-key atmosphere) can be challenging. Luckily, diners—those greasy spoons beloved for generations—check off all the boxes. Here are 10 of our favorite places to cuddle up in a booth in the DMV.

photo credit: Patrick M. via Yelp

29 Diner

This 1940s-style diner, not to be confused with Metro 29 Diner, was established in 1947 and is open 24 hours, except Monday, when it was closed. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, the diner offers brown gravy fries, meatloaf, barbecue and traditional breakfast items. The kids menu has pancakes, French toast, spaghetti and grilled cheese, and includes a drink. Save room for a slice of or an orange soda float.

Metro 29 Diner

If it’s good enough for “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” host Guy Fieri and former Vice President and current presidential hopeful Joe Biden, it’s good enough for your family. The menu is extensive with small “munchies,” meats from the carving board, triple-decker sandwiches and specials such as franks and beans. A kids menu for the 12 and under set has eight animal-named dishes that include Jello, chocolate pudding, ice cream or chocolate chip cookies and milk or soda. Examples include the Monkey, a char-broiled burger, the Zebra, a fried flounder filet and the Bear, which is chicken fingers.

Lincoln’s Waffle Shop

We don’t know if Lincoln was a huge waffle fan, but across from Ford’s Theatre, where he was shot, and next to Peterson House, where he died, sits this eatery. A family-run business since 1990, it serves specials such as country fried steak, banana pancakes and sloppy joes. Grab a bite early. It opens at 5:30 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. on weekends, 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Pete’s Diner

This small diner has welcomed some big names. For instance, former Speaker of the House John Boehner has been spotted there many a morning. Washington DC Eater describes it as a “come-as-you-are favorite for Hill staffers. It also makes a mean bulgogi.” It’s a muffin’s throw from the Library of Congress so stop here for a bite before or after a dose of culture at the world’s biggest library.

Bob and Edith’s Diner

With four locations in Northern Virginia, this diner serves standard diner fare such as steak, eggs, sausage, scrapple, hot cakes and omelets at either the counter or a table. Entrees such as country fried steak, liver and onions, and a fish platter are available, too.

Tastee Diner

Scrambling eggs since 1935, this diner has three locations throughout Maryland, two of which – Laurel and Silver Spring – serve beer and wine. Open round-the-clock, the diners have jukeboxes and televisions to keep younger ears and eyes entertained. To fill mouths, check the daily blue plate specials such as the crab cake platter on Wednesdays at the Bethesda location. Bonus: Kids eat free from 5-8 on weeknights. Choices include a Wacky Waffle, Might Mini Pancakes and Tastee Tenders.

City Diner

This Falls Church eatery offers a variety of Greek and Italian dishes, such as gyros and chicken parmesan subs, but also American plates such as broiled rainbow trout, biscuits and sausage, and egg sandwiches. Kids can choose from a cheese, ham or bacon omelet; French toast; pancakes; or eggs – each served with a soft drink for $6.95

The Diner

Gotta love a succinct name. Describing itself as a modern diner with old-school appeal, this round-the-clock eatery offers breakfast faves such as diner hash and steel-cut oats, plus entrees like jambalaya and fish tacos. Situated in the heart of Adams Morgan, The Diner is pretty close to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park.

Tom’s Diner

Not just the name of a Susanne Vega song, Tom’s Diner has been literally catering to the Manassas area for 25 years. Its extensive menu includes two kids menus: one for breakfast and one for lunch and dinner. Grownups can expect the staple diner delicacies such as omelets, country fried steak and pancakes. Kiddos 12 and younger will likely gravitate toward burgers, pancakes or French toast.

Silver Diner

This chain has 14 locations and one coming in Maryland and Virginia. The head chef works with area farms to provide locally sourced menu items, and the menu includes calorie and fat measurements to help diners eat cleanly – if they want to. The kids menu has the typical stuff but some unexpected items such as gluten-free coconut French toast, roasted chicken pot pie and a salmon quinoa bowl. There’s also a Kids Club through which members earn points toward rewards for free food and get invited quarterly member-only events.

6 D.C. Restaurants with Outside-the-Box Kid Menus

So Worth the Wait! 13 Restaurants with Awesome Pre-Meal Activities

These days, there’s a buffet of meal delivery services and apps that make ordering your favorite eats and having them brought straight to your door as simple as a few swipes and clicks. From old standbys to newcomers, we picked the best services that’ll have your family saying, “Let’s order in tonight!” Read on to feast on a smörgåsbord of food delivery apps!

Amazon Restaurants

Ever since Amazon launched its Prime service in 2005, online shoppers have come to expect super-fast delivery of everything from electronics to diapers. With the purchase of Whole Foods last year, Amazon signaled that it’s getting serious about food, too. Using the Amazon Prime Now app, hungry Amazon Prime members can order meal delivery via Amazon Restaurants, with orders arriving in an hour or less. Available in more than a dozen cities and with an always growing number of restaurant partners, Prime members also can use Alexa’s voice-shopping function on their Amazon Echo or Echo Dot to re-order previously ordered meals by saying a restaurant name or cuisine type. Best of all, delivery is free to Prime members.

Available for iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire.

Caviar

Caviar is an easy way to order meals from popular, high-end local restaurants across the U.S. With options to order home delivery or at-restaurant pickup, Caviar serves up some of the best food in your city—from Asian takeout to Sicilian pizza. Restaurant partners include Momofuku, Blue Smoke, Eataly and The Meatball Shop, among others. Caviar’s free food ordering app is currently available in nearly two dozen cities and markets, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.

Available for iOS and Android.

Delivery.com

More than just a food-delivery app, Delivery.com aspires to be the one-stop shop for busy parents to order home delivery of local food, groceries and other household needs. In addition to browsing thousands of menus and ordering food from local restaurants, the app lets users order liquor, groceries and even schedule pickup and drop-off of laundry and dry cleaning—all delivered to your door. There are plenty of exclusive app-only discounts, and new users get a 15% off coupon for their first order over $15 as well as $7 for referring a friend. With more than one million active users and 10,000-plus local business partners, Delivery.com currently is available in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and hundreds of other U.S. cities.

Available for iOS and Android.

DoorDash

If you’re stuck at home and your family has a hankering for a meal from a restaurant that usually doesn’t provide delivery service, DoorDash comes to the rescue by providing access to home delivery that other food-ordering apps typically don’t offer. Currently serving more than 600 cities in North America—including smaller cities and towns that often aren’t served by bigger food-ordering app services—DoorDash utilizes a courier model (think Uber for food delivery), which means you can order food from eateries that range from McDonald’s to P.F. Chang’s, and get it delivered to your home. Handy features on the app include advance ordering, real-time delivery tracker, and no order minimums.

Available for iOS and Android.

Eat24 Food Delivery & Takeout

Originally created by Yelp and recently acquired by GrubHub, Eat24 claims free pickup and delivery from 40,000 restaurants in more than 1,500 cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C. New features include location search, a fun Tweet My Meal function, and payment options that include PayPal and Apple Pay.

Available for iOS and Android.

Eat Purely

Chicago-based Eat Purely defies the usual expectation of greasy-spoon takeout fare by offering healthy, seasonal, chef-crafted meals that are delivered to your door on demand. With a menu that changes daily, Eat Purely’s options are fresh and healthy meals that arrive in about 30 minutes or less. As added bonuses, deliveries can be scheduled up to a week in advance, and there are plenty of choices for eaters with food restrictions or are on special diets such as gluten-free or paleo.

Available iOS and Android.

GrubHub

Still the Mack Daddy of food-ordering apps, GrubHub features ordering options from more than 55,000 restaurant partners in over 1,200 cities across the U.S., Japan, and the U.K. Like its sister food-ordering app Seamless, GrubHub’s nicely designed app lets hungry diners quickly search nearby restaurants, scroll through ratings and reviews, and order (and re-order) their favorite dishes in just a few clicks. Bonus: Payments can be made via Android Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal or good-old-fashioned cash or credit cards, so you won’t miss a beat to get your grub on.

Available for iOS and Android.

Minibar

When the kids are at grandma and grandpa’s house or they’ve already gone to bed, sometimes the best home-delivered meal is a liquid one. Minibar makes ordering wine, beer and liquor delivered to your door in as little as 30 to 60 minutes as easy as the touch of a button. Simply enter your delivery address, add your favorite items to your cart and checkout with your credit card. Minibar currently serves select markets, including Arizona, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Chicago, California, Colorado, Texas, Florida, Phoenix, Minnesota, Washington D.C., Nashville, and more. New locations coming soon! $5 off first order.

Available for iOS and Android.

Order Healthy

For parents who are worried about less-than-healthy fast-food takeout, Order Healthy connects users with local restaurants and groups food options based on what’s healthy and what’s not. The app provides access to more than 10,000 restaurants in more than a dozen markets and uses a color-coded system to indicate which menu items are not only delicious but also good for you and your family.

Available for iOS (Android coming soon).

Postmates

Whether you’re craving an iced latte from Starbucks, a burrito bowl from Chipotle or even bag of chips from the neighborhood CVS, Postmates gives you easy, on-demand access to local restaurants and stores with just a few clicks. With a fleet of delivery people, the app instantly assigns the best possible Postmate to ensure the fastest possible delivery, either at a one-time flat-rate fee or through an unlimited subscription. Real-time tracking lets you keep tabs on your delivery progress via a live map, and deliveries can be made virtually anywhere—at home, at work or at the playground. Postmates is available in 50 U.S. cities, including most major metro areas, as well as Mexico City

Available for iOS and Android.

Seamless

Launched in 1999, Seamless started as a web-based system for companies to order food from restaurants and caterers for corporate events. A few years later, Seamless transitioned from exclusively serving business eaters to opening its service to individual users. Today, Seamless is available in a dozen cities, including Austin, Boston, Chicago, Houston, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C., and boasts more than 25,000 restaurant partners in the U.S. and the U.K. (thanks to its merger with GrubHub in 2013). With its easy search function (did someone say Taco Tuesdays?), one-click re-order option, and no additional fees, Seamless is the go-to app for food delivery or takeout for many urban foodies.

Available for iOS and Android.

Uber Eats

With so many food delivery apps adopting a courier-service model, it’s no wonder that ride-sharing app Uber would want to get in on the food business. Uber Eats lets users browse local restaurants and fast food favorites, place orders from the app, then track delivery time. Using their Uber accounts, eaters simply tap to seamlessly pay with their existing Uber accounts, or add a credit card. Uber Eats is currently available in dozens of cities and metro areas worldwide, with more added frequently.

Available for iOS and Android.
