If you want a quick beach getaway without sitting parked on 95, check out these beach-themed local restaurants. Bypass beach traffic (and skip the “are we there yet” chorus) by digging in to one of these eateries that dish up tropical treats and seaside decor. Some even let kids play in the sand! From new brand-new Boardwalk Bar & Arcade at The Wharf to worth-the-drive Bowleys on the Bay, swear you’ll feel the ocean breeze.

In the City

Boardwalk Bar & Arcade

It may not be the actual beach, but hanging out at The Wharf always makes us feel like we’ve gone on a mini vacation. Feel like you’re sitting oceanside at this new addition to The Wharf where beach bites include classic boardwalk staples like corn dogs, boardwalk nachos and jumbo pretzels. The kids’ menu features pizza, Mac and cheese and, naturally, cotton candy (it is the boardwalk, after all). You’ll find a small area with arcades and skee ball for pure seaside thrills. After lunch (or a snack), enjoy more beach-themed fun at The Wharf. Spend time on the family-sized swings, dash through the splash pad or hop on the free jitney for a short cruise.

The Boardwalk Bar & Eatery

You don’t have to be near the water to feel like you’re hanging at the shore. You’ll find all the trappings of boardwalk life here: shuffleboard, skee ball, a photo booth (for those classic photo strips!) and even an indoor swing. The OG Boardwalk Bar (sister to The Wharf location) is located in the heart of Chinatown. Pop in for free popcorn every day (Tues.-Fri. .4-7 and Sat. & Sun. 3-5 p.m.) while you wait for hot dogs and cotton candy. If you need a summer elixir, you can get that cotton candy straight up!

Nick’s Riverside Grill

Lounge on one of the outdoor sofas surrounding the fountain and you can keep eyes on your kids while they hit the splash pad just steps away. Enjoy the Bayou-flair of this Georgetown restaurant with an entree of wild Gulf shrimp or jerk chicken. Or sip a cocktail while you take in the passing boats and grab-and-go a spaghetti dinner for an easy night (Nick’s $32 family style meals are still available!). For more summer fun, board the Water Taxi (it pulls up right in front of the restaurant) and head to National Harbor for a ride on the Capital Wheel and a turn on the carousel – guaranteed boardwalk vibes!

DC’s Best Places to Picnic & Play

Whether you’ve got a newborn who will (hopefully) sleep through any flick or a tot who probably won’t sit still, these theaters offer kid-friendly screenings and amenities—like free popcorn, a playground and more. (And if you haven’t at least been to LA’s iconic El Capitan, it should definitely be on your LA bucket list!) Read on for all the details on LA’s best family-friendly movie theaters.

Kid-Friendly Movie Theaters in LA

New Beverly Cinema

Visit one of the oldest theaters in Los Angeles for a Sat. or Sun. Kiddee Matinee. All ages welcome and there's a free child-sized popcorn and raffle tickets for guests ages 12 and under. Movies change from week to week and range from popular contemporary flicks to old-school classics.

Cinepolis Junior Theater

Cinepolis Junior Theater

A movie theater and indoor playground in one? We’ve hit the mother lode at the Junior Theater located within Cinepolis which screens kids movies (Rated G and PG only) all week long. The theater boasts a play structure meant to give children (ages 3-to-12) a chance to burn off some of that boundless energy before the show and during a brief intermission.

The concept is pure genius for toddlers and other kids with a low tolerance for sitting still for extended periods of time. Equipped with two slides, a tire climber, and plastic animal sculptures, little ones can romp and roam for 20 minutes prior to the start of the film and during a 15-minute intermission. Playtime is not allowed during the movie but kids happily (and surprisingly) abide by that rule. Parents can relax in peace knowing their kids are mellowed out and ready for the main attraction.

El Capitan Theatre

Disney’s own El Capitan Theatre introduces your little one to the magic of movies in a kid-friendly yet elegant setting. Dubbed “Hollywood’s First Home of Spoken Drama,” this architectural masterpiece blends a Spanish Colonial exterior with a vibrant and lavish interior. Aside from the state of the art special effects, this 1,000 seat theater offers an incredible Dolby audio system that parents will appreciate.

If your child is very young or has special needs, the Tiny Tot screenings (Tues. at 10 a.m.) are designed to reduce sensory overload: Lights go dim (not down), the volume lowers and all films are screened in 2D. Parents and kids will marvel at the majesty both on and off the screen at this iconic Hollywood theater.

Street Food Cinema

Pop-up movie theaters timed perfectly with summer give LA families a chance to enjoy cinema al fresco. But at Street Food Cinema, watching a beloved movie outdoors is just one part of the family fun! Admission to this event also gets you a ticket to live music performances and lots of delicious eats via (infamous) LA food trucks.

If that isn’t enough to woo parents, kids 5 and under are free. With 14 locations from Glendale to Malibu, there’s plenty of kid-friendly programming.

For Full Immersion: Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Downtown NYC, Downtown Brooklyn, and Staten Island

Alamo Drafthouse

The Alamo Drafthouse proudly states that everyone who works at the theater ("from the managers to the servers to the kitchen staff") is passionate about movies. The experience is a huge step above regular movie theaters, as it boasts incredibly comfortable seats, delicious meals served while you watch (with free soda and popcorn refills!), and hand-picked movies. Alamo Drafthouse screens everything from first-run blockbusters to cult favorites to special family programming. The theater also hosts frequent family-friendly special events, like themed menu nights and screening parties.

While visitors under 18 to the Alamo must be accompanied by an adult, the theater also has plenty of options for kids to enjoy their movies. Parents can check out the Alamo for All, sensory-friendly and kid-friendly screenings, which keep children in mind.

Kids ages 3 and up are allowed in shows that start before 6 p.m., and it's strictly 6 and up after 6 p.m. Note that during any kind of kid-friendly movie, guests under 18 still need to be accompanied by adults.

The brand-new Manhattan location just opened in October 2021! In addition to a whopping 14 show screens, the Downtown Manhattan spot features the unique Press Room bar. Entering the Press Room is like stepping into the past: the space is a bar, an event space, and a museum all in one, and displays over 60,000 letterpress film advertising places from the 1930s up through the 80s.

In addition to the Brooklyn and Manhattan locations, a third NYC location is planned for Staten Island, along with a kung-fu-themed store designed by the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA.

For Kid- and Baby-friendly Screenings: Nitehawk Cinema Prospect Park and Williamsburg

The Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg is a legendary location: The location overturned a Prohibition-era restriction preventing the serving of alcohol in movie theaters. Thanks to this theater, adult visitors are free to enjoy an alcoholic beverage while they watch a movie! Besides that, this triplex has 92-, 60-, and 34-seat theaters, and offers a full menu and bar service during movie screenings. Outdoor movie screenings are often held when it's warm out! The menu uses local ingredients, often influenced by beloved movies.

The second location Nitehawk Cinema in Prospect Park, formerly known as The Pavillion, was fully-updated and refurbished in cooperation with the Landmarks Preservation Commission (the renovation revealed original features and details of the 1928 theater). The 650-seat parkside cinema is primed to showcase both smaller films and huge blockbusters with a suite of state-of-the-art theaters that range from somewhat intimate to massive. (Tip: Theater 2, outfitted with a stage and huge screen provides an exemplary viewing experience.) Seats are a nice middle ground between basic theater seating and oversized, reclining lounge chairs; they are very comfortable and equipped with small tables.

The theater also has two full bars, a mezzanine cafe offering views of Prospect Park, and features special programming throughout the year, as well as brunch.

Although they're generally 18+ locations, both Nitehawk Cinema locations regularly accommodate kids and parents. The first showing of the day for all G- and PG-rated movies are open to children of any age (accompanied by an adult guardian) — these shows are marked as ALL AGES on the website.

If you’re a new parent, treat yourself to a movie and indulge in some munchies at the "Adults with Infants" showings. Every Tuesday, only parents with infants under one-year-old will be permitted (no kids of other ages are allowed).

During the special child-friendly times, the theaters' zero-tolerance disruption policy will be relaxed to allow kids to, well, be kids. (The Nitehawk does ask that if your child needs soothing you take them into the lobby to allow other guests to enjoy the movie.) Note that for all kid screenings, children in car seats are welcome but strollers need to be checked at the door.

Best for Classics: Film Forum and Film Forum Jr.

The Film Forum Jr. series presents new restorations of classics, animated films, shorts, international films, and even silent films with live piano accompaniments. This season's showings include the 100th-anniversary restoration of Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid," some Buster Keaton films and other classics, as well as more modern picks like Hayao Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro" and Richard Linklater’s "School of Rock" — and more!

For Chill Movie Moments: AMC Sensory Friendly Movie Screenings

Wikimedia Creative Commons

With over a dozen AMC theaters scattered around NYC, you're bound to have encountered and maybe even visited a few in the past. But did you know that AMC has sensory-friendly screenings? Since 2007, the theater has offered movie screenings for anyone who wants to enjoy a movie but requires a less sense-intense experience.

At these screenings, the lights are turned up and the sound turned down. Visitors are allowed to get up and move around, make noise, talk, shout or even sing! You'll find family-friendly low-sensory screenings every second and fourth Saturday of the month. (Wednesday evenings accommodate a mature audience.) Participating theaters include AMC Magic Johnson in Harlem and AMC Bay Plaza in the Bronx.

For Local Charm: Cobble Hill & Kew Gardens Cinemas

Head to one of these smaller theaters with a decidedly un-corporate vibe for a mix of first-run (kids' movies are typically on one screen), independent and foreign films. This mini-chain also has a location in Williamsburg (Williamsburg Cinemas) in a newer building. While the buildings might date to the mid-century, the interiors, sound and digital projection systems are upgraded. One thing they all have in common: a slightly goofy, retro PSA telling audience members to be quiet, throw out their trash, etc. and interiors decorated with quirky movie-related art, posters and photos.

For the Most Convenient Screenings: New York Public Libraries

Setting a weekly movie date with the kids is a great way to avoid a case of cabin fever this winter. That said, bundling your set of movie-goers to go crosstown is a big hassle. Stay close to home by attending a screening at your local library.

Many public libraries around New York City host screenings for families and kids of different ages, from children's movies to teen screenings, as well as classics. Many locations have regularly scheduled movie nights (very often on Fridays).

Note that you can request ASL interpretation if you ask for it two weeks in advance. Check out the New York, Brooklyn and Queens Public Library’s websites to find the screenings nearest you!

You love a good porter, and the subtleties of a fresh hop IPA aren’t lost on your palate. Luckily, with the current craft beer movement, more breweries and pubs are opening their doors to parents with kids in tow, creating fun, relaxing environments for all. Sure, this won’t replace your need for trivia night at your local bar, but now you won’t be limited on when and where you can enjoy the newest microbrew. From working farms that serve up fantastic ciders to world-famous breweries and gardens, keep reading to discover our favorite spots to grab a brew with babes in tow.

Ballast Point Brewpub - Disneyland Resort, Anaheim, CA

The 100 tap lines will offer more than fifty styles of Ballast Point’s adventurous beer including some exclusive brews. New Glarus Brewing Co. - New Glarus -WI

Daniella D. via Yelp

While anyone is allowed to take the tour of the New Glarus Brewing Co., they have a strict policy where "anyone, regardless of age, who cries, spits, screams, fights or climbs on the machinery will politely be excused from our brewery tour." All kidding aside, visiting the brewery within Wisconsin's "Little Switzerland" is definitely a "must see." Located on a hilltop, you and the kids can take your own self-guided tour of the brewery's garden with plenty of photos opps. You will want to pack a few snacks since they do not offer food, but they do make their own root beer so everyone wins!

Gate City Brewing - Roswell, GA

Heather L. via Yelp

In what used to be two mechanic shops is now Gate City Brewing's two-story, brewhouse and taproom which is, as they say, "pro-friendly." Not only are kids and dogs welcome, but so is outside food (although local food trucks also make the rounds too.) The place offers nearly 20 house-brewed beers on draft and lots of fun including live music, brewery yoga, "paint and pint nights," comedy showcases and more.

Julie A. via Yelp

Some families boast that the Old Irving Brewery is a great place to cuddle up during a rainy day. For the kids (and for those who don't care to drink) they also offer a variety of sodas (house-made and Coca-Cola varieties), ginger beer, lemonade and ice tea. If you can manage to pull them away from the indoor bean bag toss area, your kids will love mac and cheese with bacon of other great finds on the huge kid-friendly menu.

Elliott Bay Brewing Company - Three locations in the Seattle area, WA

Brad R. via Yelp

If you walk in the doors of Elliott Bay Brewing Company around dinnertime, there will be no doubt in your mind that this is where beer-loving parents come to enjoy a pint—and you’ll love that Elliott Bay is pretty noisy so no one will be hushing your little ones through your meal. Ask to sit upstairs or in one of the booths along the edge of the brewery. The kids’ menu is tasty and the adult fare is a step above typical brewery grub, so come hungry. And now with three locations, it’s easier than ever to make this your new Friday night hangout!

Atlantic Brewing Company was one of the first to hop (pun intended!) on the microbrew craze. The kids will love the playground in the back, and Atlantic Brewing even does flights of housemade soda tastings for the little ones! Station 26 Brewing – Denver, CO

Devin C. via Yelp

Craft beer fans know Denver as the home of the Great American Beer Festival, but it’s also home to an impressive list of breweries creating their own suds. There are several kid-friendly joints, but Station 26 is at the top of the list. There’s no restaurant, but there are pretzels for snacking, and a revolving selection of food trucks show up every day. There’s a grassy area that’s great for kids, a bunch of communal picnic tables with plenty of shade, and live music. Plus, the building was actually a real fire station in a past life. Oh, and the beer? It’s pretty awesome, too.

Finnriver Farm & Cidery – Chimacum, WA

It's not exactly a brewery, but this awesome cidery located on the Olympic Peninsula is totally worth the drive, even with wee ones.  Not only is the cider seriously legit, but space is a destination in itself. There’s a working farm, a tasting room, and family-friendly music concerts during the summer.

Head's up foodies! Finnriver takes the slow food movement seriously. During the week they offer local snacks and goodies to create your own picnic. Flossmoore Brewing Company – Flossmoor, IL

Courtesy Flossmoor Station

Stationed inside a 1906 train depot, this award-winning brewpub is located in the heart of historic Flossmoor, just 28 miles outside of Chicago. Kids love the Old Caboose Ice Cream Shoppe (open Thurs.-Sun. from Jun.-Sept.) that dishes up frozen yogurt and fun toppings like gummy bears, Snickers bar, and teddy grahams. There’s a kid’s menu with healthy options, and the adult fare is pretty tasty too. Think carving board charcuterie & cheese, burgers, baby back ribs, fish 'n' chips and more. Tiny guests also have a chance to write a story about Goober, the pub mascot (the two best stories are chosen once a month). The winner receives a free kids meal and the honor of having his or her story posted in the main entrance. There’s also a miniature train set that runs above the pub and bar area, and the brewery even does root beer tours for local second-grade classrooms!

Marin Brewing Company – Larkspur, CA

Marin Brewing Company via Facebook

Marin County’s original brewpub has been a family hot-spot for years. There’s a large patio with picnic tables to fit large groups, and the menu (each kid menu comes with crayons) has everything from mac ‘n’ cheese for the kids to special salads and entrees for the adults. As an added bonus, the brewpub can be found at Marin Country Mart, which, from the play area and pond in the middle of the shopping center to the ice cream and toy shops that take up other storefronts, is perfect for an entire day of fun.

Maple Island Brewing – Stillwater, MN

Maple Island Brewing Company via Yelp

If the patio overlooking the beautiful St. Croix River and the view of the famous Lift Bridge doesn’t win you over, the impressive collections of games, the free popcorn, the yoga and fun family events (cornhole tourney, anyone?) will. This family-owned brewery is located in the heart of historic Stillwater, and the community vibes are real—every Monday, $1 of every pint sold goes to a local non-profit organization. They also have menus from nearby restaurants on hand, and there’s a candy store right across the street. Grab a bite from hotspots like The Grand, Victoriano’s and Chicago Dogs and settle in for a pint.

Golden Road Brewing – Los Angeles, CA

Thedavis M. via Yelp

It’s pretty clear that Golden Road Brewing Company understands the perils of dining with kids in public. The hand-crafted Bavarian soft pretzel is a family favorite at the Atwater Village location (5410 W San Fernando Rd.). There are lawn games for little wiggle worms, you can catch a train going by every now and again (the brewery is housed inside a former Southern Pacific switching station), and there’s even a special patio just for dogs. And, here’s an insider tip: make use of the valet parking. It’s free and beats parking a few blocks away. Self-parking is scarce. Other locations can be found in Downtown Los Angeles (317 S Broadway) and Anaheim (2210 E Orangewood Ave.).

It’s a dine-in outdoor movie theater (Tickets are only $3, but they go quickly!), a restaurant serving up classic pub fare with fun Hollywood-themed names like Jedi Jalapeno Poppers, Lord of the Onion Rings, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Salad, plus, they make great beer. There’s also an impressive game room with foosball, pool, ping-pong, and vintage pinball and arcade games!

Lake Placid Brewery & Pub – Lake Placid, NY

Scott F via Yelp

Lake Placid Pub & Brewery is a parent’s dream. Not only do they offer cornhole in the front beer garden area, but—more importantly—there’s a 10’ x 20’ kids room on the third floor. There are games, puzzles and a custom-painted scavenger hunt on the walls (complete the hunt, get a prize!).  There’s a full kids menu and, the best part? They offer s’mores for dessert—kids of all ages can roast their own marshmallows right at the table. We think it all sounds like a dream dinner date with the littles!

Laurelwood Brewing Company - Portland, OR

Ricky Pike via Flickrr

Self-described as “the place where friends and family meet,” it comes as no surprise that Laurelwood Brewing is ideal for a family gathering. With two patios, two kids’ play areas and a warm atmosphere, you can tell that this establishment was opened by parents with young children. Order the kids’ food first (long list of entrees, plus a side, drink and dessert) and get it earlier if your hungry children are chomping at the bit. Their additional locations welcome kids as well, each offering play areas created with toddlers in mind. You can be Laurelwood in Hollywood (5115 NE Sandy Blvd.) and Sellwood (6716 SE Milwaukie Ave.).
