If you’re looking for a snowflake science experiment, you’ve come to the right place

Whether your sidekick playfully carves out angels in the snow or sits at the window longing for some of that white stuff to actually fall, she’s all about the frosty flakes. And while play is her main motivation, she’s got serious questions about this wonderful winter phenomenon. Like, how do snowflakes form and what do they really look like up close? Dig deep with a flurry of experimental activities we’ve outlined below to find answers to all her snowflake science questions.

Piece It Together

We hate to break it to you, but those adorably sweet snowflake cutouts your kid has been bringing home from school this winter don’t pass scientific muster. Because even though folding paper to make four or eight-sided flakes are super easy, Mother Nature’s snowflakes showcase six-sided symmetry exclusively.

Before diving into your own masterpiece, introduce your scientifically-inclined sidekick to the principle that helps explain why six is the magic number for snowflakes: When the water/oxygen molecules bond during freezing they make hexagons. Recreate this microscopic lattice phenomenon on a larger scale using mini marshmallows and toothpicks with your kids (Click on the link above to find a handy-dandy diagram from Ohio State University!).

Cut It Out

Now that your kiddo’s got the six-sided thing down, it’s time to make some of your own scientifically accurate snowflakes from paper. We’ve found an easy way for the tot lot to get the signature six-sided look they’re going for (hint: it’s all about the fold). Simply follow this illustrated tutorial to make paper snowflakes that are true to life. And if you’re looking to bypass the mess, the Make-A-Flake digital option is definitely the way to go. Your tech-savvy tot can cut and save all her frosty creations and save trees too!

Get Real

Observation is the next step when it comes to snowflake science. If you don't have fresh snow on the ground, you’ve got to get creative and make your own: Leave your freezer door open for a couple of minutes and then close it for 20. When you open it again, your inquisitive cutie should find frosty snowflakes lining the interior.

Now that you’ve got snow to work with, it’s time to get an up-close look at some of Mother Nature’s most delicately beautiful creations. To do this, you’ll need a magnifying glass and a dark piece of paper or, if you’re outside, you can also capture snowflakes on clothing like your gloves or jacket sleeve. Gather a few fresh flakes and use the magnifying glass to examine them in detail (If you’re working with freezer snowflakes, melting is an issue, so leave those tiny miracles in the freezer while you magnify.).

Reassure your little scientists that it’s true, no two are alike, and let them know that just one can be made up of over 200 tiny ice crystals! While you’re looking, have your mini-me count up the sides and use this chart to match what you’ve got in hand with standard ice crystals.

Watch and Learn

You’ve figured out a snowflake’s molecular structure, cut out creative and accurate examples of your own, and examined the real deal through a handheld magnifying glass. Now it’s time to take it one step further. Go behind the scene with rad videos that explain a ton of science behind snowflakes, like their formation and life cycle.

Science Friday’s Snowflake Safari follows Kenneth Libbrecht—CalTech’s resident snowflake expert—a scientist who’s spent a lot of time looking into these chilly chips, as he examines snowflake basics. Be sure to augment your own magnifying experience by flipping through some of Libbrecht’s spectacular snowflake slides online. They’re a great way to demonstrate many of the concepts you and your kiddo have already explored.

Finish up your viewing session with the National Science Foundation’s video about photographing snowflakes. It starts with the man who pioneered the field, Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, and ends with the discoveries made by the Present Weather Imager, a high-tech camera that captures snowflakes in action. Lights, camera, learn!

Make Your Own

growing a snowflake crystal is a good snowflake science project
Allison Sutcliffe

Wrap up what you’ve learned about snowflake science by making a crystal snowflake of your own. Use pipe cleaners to create a six-sided snowflake that gets suspended in a Borax solution overnight. What’s created is a larger-than-life snowflake that’s just as sparkly as the ones that fall from the sky.

Atlanta lacks little when it comes to entertaining the family, but if it’s the frosty fun you’re craving you might feel left out in the cold. The good news is that snowy spots are only a short drive from the heart of Hotlanta. Read on to find out where to plan your family’s next brr-illiant afternoon of fun.

Take the crew for snow tubing, but stay for the ice rink, carnival rides, snow play area, and wintry treats at Snow Island. Parrot Mountain is one of North America's longest snow rides, as a 575-foot-long, eight-story snow slide. Snowball Alley is perfect for the little ones, who really just want to build a snowman (thanks, Elsa).

Scaly Mountain

For snow tubing and ice skating, head to Scaly Mountain just across the Georgia border in between Dillard and Highlands, North Carolina. It’s only a two hour drive, so you can easily do it as a day trip. However, if you want to make a weekend of it, there are plenty of family-friendly accommodations nearby. Scaly offers three snow lines for individual tubers (must be 4 years old and 42”tall) and a kiddie slope for kids under four. You can also try out some ice skating in their outdoor rink and trout fishing in stocked ponds (if they aren't frozen over).

Located about 2 ½ hours from Atlanta, Sapphire Valley offers the closest ski lodge experience. Its ski courses consist of a 1600 foot main run with a vertical drop of 200 feet and a beginner slope with modest vertical drop of 50 feet and a moving carpet lift - and did somebody say "ski school?" Yep. They did, and Sapphire Valley has it.

Snow Cubbies is the perfect place for small children to play in the snow and discover winter excitement, but it's open weekends and Holidays only—so be sure to check before you trek. You can also bump, spin, and zoom around the Ice Rink in Ice Bumper Cars (or ice skate, of course), and for the more adventurous, there's skiing, snowboarding, and a terrain park.

The temperature keeps rising, and you need a way to chill out. Well, we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve. The secret weapon? Ice. That’s right—cold, frozen fun is totally in this summer, and we’ve got 17 ways to make it happen. Scroll down to see them all.

Eat & Drink

Sheri Silver via Unsplash

1. Make insta-smoothies. You'll never worry if you have all the ingredients for a healthy breakfast drink again. Simply make ice cube versions ahead of time and pop them into the blender when ready.

2. Making iced coffee? Make some iced coffee cubes! Freeze a little leftover coffee in a tray and the next time you are making yourself a cool, chilled coffee drink use these instead of regular ice. Your drink won't end up weak and watery.

3. Ditto for iced tea. Splash a little iced tea or lemonade into an ice cube tray for a great way to chill your tea without watering it down.

4. Get spriggy with it. Toss in a sprig of lemon thyme or mint for a perfect splash of herby-goodness in your cocktail, mocktail or cold water.

5. When in doubt, make popsicles. You can make these in an ice cube tray or a popsicle mold, or even a paper cup with a popsicle stick in the center (you'll want to add the stick about halfway through the freezing process). Here are our favorite recipes for you to try this summer!

6. Fancy pants. Use edible flowers frozen in ice and serve the single most fancy glass of water on the block. Delicate violets, nasturtiums, lavender, calendula and even dianthus or carnations work perfectly.

7. Leftover rules. Use leftover juice from canned peaches or pineapple to make tiny popsicles that will also add a spike of sweetness to your tea or sparkling water.

8. Shine. If you happen to have edible glitter around you can swirl some into the water after you've filled the cube trays, or try adding a couple of sprinkles.

9. Keep it simple. Serve your drinks in an extra frosty glass. Just run water over the cup and place it in the freezer for a few minutes. Instant-frosty mug!

Play

10. Make ice volcanos. With a little pre-prep, you can make this simple experiment for your curious kids.

11. Shapey things. These days you can find ice cube trays (or use candy molds) in all kinds of shapes and sizes, including LEGO bricks, dinosaurs and more. Freeze them in different colors and lay them out on a tray for adorable play that will make you melt.

12. Smells n"ice." Who knew you could use ice for a scent-sensory experiment, using classic items from your spice rack? Check out how Lemon and Lime Adventures did it, and then set up your own version.

13. Ice science. A proper experiment really doesn't get much simpler than a muffin tin with ice and a few key ingredients, designed to see what makes ice melt the fastest. The Chaos and the Clutter has an easy tutorial you can follow so you can literally execute this cool project in less than ten minutes.

Gabby Cullen

14. Painter's palette. Freeze washable paint in ice trays and make colored ice cubes. Once they're frozen, let the kiddos paint with their refreshing new paint!

15. Excavation station. Take a few toys, like small cars, rubber duckies, even LEGO minifigs and freeze them in water. Use a nice tall container to get a tower or a big bowl. You add a few toys, let the water freeze a bit, then stash in a couple more to get a well-balanced icicle. You can equip them with a butter knife, plastic knife or spoon or a stick to begin the scraping. For younger kids, let them just go free-hand. We love this bejeweled rainbow version from Fun at Home with Kids

16. Frozen IRL. Make a big batch or buy a bag of ice cubes and get stacking. Using a bit of water to help them stick, race against the clock as you stack and form an ice castle fit for Elsa. Got a few Frozen-themed toys around the house? Get them in on the fun! Make ice beds, ice chairs, ice tables, walls and more.

17. Chill, baby! Looking for cute sensory play for your smallest set? Check out these awesome frozen sensory bags that are safer for babies but still keep them stimulated and cool on a hot day!

Eight communities across the country will be able to experience the modern light show live when it flies through their town. The event promises a fun and safe family night out complete with pre-show entertainment, including music from local DJs and a short holiday special, DreamWorks Trolls Holiday, before the drones take flight. Sat., Dec. 5: Dallas, Texas at the Cotton Bowl

Wed., Dec. 9: San Antonio, Texas at Six Flags Fiesta Texas
