Ugly, but make it fashion. Ugly Christmas sweaters are here.

There’s nothing as iconic as the ugly Christmas sweater. Oh, sure, they started out being worn un-ironically (over turtlenecks and paired with a festive brooch, right? We know you’re picturing it now.), but they’ve become a seasonal staple that isn’t going anywhere. Have you been resisting this trend? It’s time to embrace it. Do you already have a collection of jolly jumpers? We’re ready to help you add to it. Either way, these sweaters are the icing on the Christmas cake (Yule log?). Parties, Christmas Day, casual Friday…you need one. Or two. Whatever.

Hilariously ugly to adorably snuggly, this is the ultimate sweater guide. Oh, and if you hate sweaters, or live somewhere that it just would be miserable to wear one, we thought of that, too. There’s tees, sweatshirts, button-downs, and even an apron in here. For adults, for kids, and for pets—we made sure to include anyone who needs some extra holiday style. And make sure to note shipping cut-off dates! It’s coming fast.

This list includes some of the best movies for kids of all time. How many have you seen with your family?

Looking for the best movies for kids? With the endless array of TV and movie options out there (including free full-length options on YouTube), it’s hard to pick a flick that the whole family will love. Well, bicker no more. From The Karate Kid to The Incredibles, we’ve made the decision easy with a definitive list of must-see childhood movies for children under 12. So grab some fun snacks and get that family movie night started!

1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
There's a reason people still watch this holiday classic year after year: Parents to tweens will appreciate this timeless tale of a once-hopeless man realizing the value of his own life with the help of a guardian angel.

Not rated.

Recommended for ages 9 and up.

2. E.T. (1982)
Still one of the best science fiction movies ever, E.T. is all about friendship and childhood. From Reese’s Pieces to the classic phrase “E.T. phone home,” every moment of this movie will live with your extraterrestrial forever.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages 7 & up.

3. Spirited Away (2002)
This animated film is a magical adventure and is considered to be one of Hayao Miyazaki's masterpieces. It stars a strong female protagonist but parents of younger kids beware: there are scary creatures, the parents turn into pigs, and in one scene a river dragon lingers on the verge of death.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages 9 & up.

4. Coco (2017)
Based on the Mexican holiday, Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead, Coco tells the tale of 12-year-old Miguel who finds himself in the Land of the Dead and with the help of his musician great-great-grandfather dives deep into his family history (and their generations-old ban on music!). There are strong family vibes in this blockbuster, and your kids will love the whimsically colorful, melodic story!

A note for parents—this movie deals with the concept of mortality and could be slightly upsetting for young kids.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages 7 & up.

5. Frozen (2013) and Frozen 2 (2019)
This Disney classic (and its sequel) is definitely one of the best movies for kids. The films about sisterhood, family, and love will surprisingly warm your hearts, fill your home with song, and should come with a disclaimer: For months afterward, your kids won’t sing anything but Let It Go, Into the Unknown, and Do You Want to Build a Snowman.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

6. Soul
This family movie from Pixar and Disney follows jazz musician and teacher Joe as he travels from life to the Great Before (instead of the Great Beyond). He's not ready for his life to be over, so he's determined to make it home. The first-rate cast including Jaime Foxx and Tina Fey, the amazing animation, and the wonderful music are just a few of the reasons to love this movie for kids.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

7. Yes Day
Inspired by the beloved children's book by the same name, Allison and Carlos decide to give their three kids a "Yes Day," where there's no saying no to anything the kids ask for or to do (within reason). Chaos ensues, and it becomes clear that all yes all the time isn't always the best idea.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages 7 & up.

8. The Sword in the Stone (1963)
From rags to riches, it’s the story of King Arthur in true to Disney style. Your lil’ knight will be giggling, dancing and bopping to the wizarding whimsy of this animated musical.

Rated G.

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

9. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)
A shrink ray accidentally goes off and sets a group of kids on a journey back home (even though they never leave their backyard) while their parents search high and low for them.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 6 & up.

10. Cool Runnings (1993)
Everything seems stacked against these athletes who are completely unprepared for the cold, let alone bobsledding. Loosely based on a true story of the Jamaica national bobsled team, Cool Runnings is a real inspirational film for young dreamers.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

The Star Wars saga is one of the best movies for kids
Walt Disney Studios

11. Star Wars Series (1977-)
Now is as good a time as any to introduce this epic space opera. Your space lover will be on the edge of his or her seat during this story of lightsabers, telepathic powers, space-flight adventures, and the biggest plot twist in cinematic history. Our inner geek is giving this PSA: Please remember to start your Jedi with A New Hope and not The Phantom Menace.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

12. A League of Their Own (1992)
If your kids ever ask you why girls don't play Major League Baseball, you can tell them, "They did"—and then show them this film, which tells the real-life story of the 1940s All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.  Tom Hanks shines as the grumpy coach.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages 8 & older

13. Willow (1988)
For today's Harry Potter generation, a viewing of Willow will surely be of interest. The adventure is easy to follow and full of school-age humor, and two forest fairies provide comedy with their slapstick, strange voices, and snappy one-liners. Lucas' fantasy has interesting-looking characters and villages, gothic castles and, most of all, magic. Willow is an excellent choice to give young kids a taste of fantasy.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages 8 & older

14. Tangled (2010)
Get lost in Disney’s retelling of Rapunzel, which is a lot more exciting than the original story. Hint: She gets to leave the tower and goes on a thrilling journey of magic, song, and self-discovery.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

15. Finding Nemo (2003)
Laugh until your tummy hurts as this timid clownfish dad searches the great ocean for his son. Every underwater creature has a catchphrase that’ll become your guppy’s new mantra. Just keep swimming … just keep swimming!

Rated G.

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

16. Princess Bride (1987)
Part comedy, part romance, part adventure, part fantasy and 100% perfect—Princess Bride is the ultimate family movie for storytime lovers, big, small, boy, or girl. And yes, there is some kissing.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

17. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)
A perfect movie for the littlest film-goers, this endearing film follows A.A. Milne's classic bear as he bumbles about Hundred Acre Wood learning lessons on friendship. There's no offensive or scary content in the film, which makes it great for younger kids.

Rated G

Recommended for ages 3 & up.

18. Shrek (2001)
One unforeseeable plot twist on the classic fairytale? Coming right up! An ogre sets out to rescue a princess with a talking donkey—plus all the characters from your cupcake’s bedtime stories.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 6 & up.

19. The Muppet Movie (1979)
Way before Jason Segel starred in the 2011 Muppet movie, there was The Muppet Movie, which goes way, way back to before Kermit the Frog was in show business. Fans of those classic fuzzy puppets will love watching this origin story.

Rated G.

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

20. The Lion King (1994)
Grab a tissue for that one scene (you know which one we’re talking about), but after that, the rest of the movie is all song, dance, and excitement for your lil’ monkey.

Rated G.

Recommended for ages 6 & up.

21. The Sandlot (1993)
Your short stuff will definitely relate to Scotty as he makes new friends on a ragtag baseball team and goes on grand adventures involving tree houses, rival groups, a legendary ball-eating dog, and all the things that childhood memories are made of.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

22. The Little Mermaid (1989)
Ignore the original Hans Christian Andersen (that ending is unfortunately not very happily ever after), and opt for Disney’s The Little Mermaid for a family movie night with the kids. It’s got unforgettable songs, enchanting characters, and, best of all, a happy ending.

Rated G.

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

23. Home Alone (1990)
This perfect Christmas movie will give your tots a movie dose of bravery, when it comes to being by themselves, as they watch a smart-aleck eight-year-old defend his home from a pair of bumbling burglars. Note: There is some sibling squabbling that isn't all that nice.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 7 & up.

24. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
No movie portrays the spirit of Christmas better than Miracle on 34th Street. Save this one for the holidays because it’ll definitely make your little helper feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 6 & up.

25. Spider-Man (2002)
If you're looking for a good starter superhero movie, this 2002 origin story follows Peter Parker (Toby Maguire) as he gets bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes the witty hero we all know and love. Some explosions and tense Green Goblin moments may frighten sensitive viewers, but most tweens will love every bit of it.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 11 & up.

26. Toy Story 1, 2, 3, 4 (1995 - 2019)
Every kid will love the iconic warm-hearted tale of the secret life of toys. Each film is special in its own right.

Rated G.

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

Whale Rider is a wonderful movie for kids
South Pacific Productions

27. Whale Rider (2003)
Before Moana set out on the seas on a quest to save her village, a courageous girl named Pai did it first. The film is set in the Maori community of New Zealand, where modern culture threatens to quell ancient traditions. Twelve-year-old Pai sets out to prove that even though she is not the male heir her father wanted, she has the bravery, wisdom, and skill to lead. There are some adult themes (including a mother and child who die during childbirth, as well as some references to marijuana), but tweens and parents will appreciate the inspiring message.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages 11 & up.

28. The Sound of Music (1965)
How else is your musical tot going to learn the lyrics to Do-Re-Mi? The Sound of Music is completely captivating with equal parts song, romance, and family bonding.

Rated G.

Recommended for ages 6 & up.

29. Wadjda (2013)

The first movie to be directed by a Saudi Arabian woman, this story is of a spunky, independent 11-year-old girl who wants to ride a bike, wears Converse sneakers, and loves to compete against her (male) best friend. Beautifully done, the film explores topics such as religious traditions and laws, but it's also an incredible study of female empowerment. Follow along, and cheer for Wadjda as she fiercely makes a place for herself in the world.

Rated PG

Recommended for ages  8 & up.

30. Despicable Me, 2 & 3 (2010, 2013, 2017)
Kids and adults alike will love this bad-guy-turns-good-guy fairy tale about a curmudgeonly villain who learns to love an orphaned trio of little girls. The sequels are just as much fun as the original.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 6 & up.

31. Free To Be You And Me (1974)
In a compilation of shorts that were edgy at the time of this film's release, Free To Be You And Me explores things like gender roles, working mothers, and racial stereotyping with the help of celebrities including Mel Brooks, Alan Alda, Marlo Thomas, and a young Michael Jackson.

Not rated.

Recommended for ages 5 & up.

32. Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Your magical creatures won’t be able to get enough of the Harry Potter adventures. Everything from the food to the spells is a unique discovery. Start off with The Sorcerer's Stone, which introduces the wizarding world. The film series is completed, but the rest of the films skew for an older audience.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

33. Bedknobs & Broomsticks (1971)
Starring the legendary Angela Landsbury and Mary Poppins alum David Tomlinson, this classic Disney film focuses on three siblings who are evacuated from London during World War II and end up in the care of an apprentice witch. Chaos ensues, and there's a fun animated section where they all end up on the island of Naboombu. While the slow parts may bore young children, and the presence of Nazi invaders might bring up questions, all and all, this is a fun classic film for families.

Rated: G

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

34. Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Julie Andrews fans can rest assured that this remake by Rob Marshall is an ode to the near-perfect original. Emily Blunt charms, Lin-Manuel Mirada shines, and the sequel plot means that viewers will see how Jane and Michael are faring some 20 years after Mary Poppins first came into their lives. Be on the lookout for a very special cameo from the one and only Dick Van Dyke!

Rated: PG

Recommended for ages 6 & up.

Dreamworks Studio

35. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

38. Moana (2016)
Girl power is at its best in this modern Disney classic that puts a strong-hearted young girl on a mission to return the "heart of the ocean" to its rightful owner. Besides the memorable songs and moving story, this film stands apart from most Disney flicks in that there are no princes (or romances of any kind) to be found during the whole 113 minutes.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 6 & up.

39. Beauty and the Beast (2017)
The "tale as old as time" gets a modern retelling that stays true to its trademark Disney sweetness, with Emma Watson starring as a Belle every little girl will want to be. Note: Because it's live-action, some of the scenes (like the ones with the wolves chasing Belle) can be a little scary.

Rated PG.

Featuring the voices of some of the most famous actors of the time (Samantha Mathis, Christian Slater, Robin Williams, Tim Curry), join fairy-queen-in-training Cyrsta as she resues surfer-dude Zak from falling trees, and himself. Featuring a strong environmental message, it's a wonderful way to help show kids the value of a strong ecosystem. And, the music rocks, too.

For all the inspiration that Peter Pan gives a rambunctious child, Hook shows how grown-ups can still have fun. Your Lost Boy (or Girl) will be hugging you tight throughout this movie.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

61. BIG (1988)
For every kid who talks about growing up all the time, have them watch BIG because jumping from 12 years old to 30 years old is only a good idea in theory… and on film.

Rated PG.

62. Labyrinth (1986)
Set in a bizarre world that’ll delight the most imaginative kiddo, Labyrinth will captivate your imagination with Muppets, riddles, and a lighthearted sense of danger.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

63. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
This animated Spidey film follows a teen who becomes a new Spider-Man and meets a slew of other Spider-people from parallel universes. It's a little less intense than the live-action Spider-Man iterations, making it a better choice for younger viewers. Still, there is a lot of violence, including weapons and two major characters are killed—so be wary if you don't want your kids to be exposed.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 8 & up.

64. Trolls (2016)
With an awesome pop-rock soundtrack that you'll want to download, like, asap, this light-hearted flick is about a duo of trolls (Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick) who partner up to rescue their friends from the troll-hungry bad guys.

My Neighbor Totoro is a good movie for kids
Studio Ghibli

65. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Another masterpiece from Hayao Miyazaki, this family movie is appropriate for all ages. Two girl protagonists move to the countryside in 1950s Japan and are befriended by the magical creature, Totoro, who helps them when they have a problem related to their mother, who is dealing with a long-term illness.

66. Alice in Wonderland (1951)
Everyone loves this classic tale of a little girl who falls asleep and gets whisked into a nonsense world where "Everyone is mad."  Alice grows bigger and smaller and encounters all sorts of wild characters—some of which are mildly inappropriate (like the hookah-smoking caterpillar and a head-chopping queen), but all in all this tale of silliness is fun and engaging.

Princess and the Frog is a classic movie for kids
Disney Studios

70. The Princess and the Frog (2009)
A twist on the classic tale: A beautiful girl kisses a frog (who is actually a prince) and instead of him getting turned back into a human, she gets turned into a frog! With a jazzy New Orleans vibe keeping things cool, this modern fairy tale is also the first Disney movie to feature an African-American heroine, Tiana. Also unlike Disney's long-ago damsels, Tiana is strong and hardworking and doesn't need a man to get by in the world (though she doesn't mind having one as a friend).

76. Big Hero 6 (2014)
Disney's adaptation of the Marvel comic about a boy named Hiro and his robot creation, a "personal health companion" named Baymax, will delight little robot fans. But be forewarned: Much of the film deals with the idea of grief since the boy's older brother dies at the beginning of the film. Despite the sad beginnings, this family movie has lots of heart and a sweet ending.

Rated PG.

Recommended for ages 7 & up.

77. Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
In a realm known as Kumandra comes the Oscar-nominated mythical tale of when dragons and humans fought together to fight the Druun. Pack the tent and the s’mores, camping season has arrived

Summer is in the air—can you feel it? That means summer travel plans and getting together with friends and family after a busy year are just ahead. We couldn’t think of a better place to unwind and spend time with your crew than at one of the state’s best group campsites.

So we scoped out 11 that are within a few hours of the city and let large (and not so large) groups camp together. They’ve got great perks like nearby waterfall hikes, ranger programs, and big grassy areas that give kids the room they need to play all day. So if a group camping excursion is on your summer bucket list, now is the time to reserve your campsite. Read on for the need-to-know details.

Good to Know

1. Don’t forget your passes when you visit these campsites. State Parks require a Discover Pass, and National Forest and National Parks also have pass requirements. As they say, don’t leave home without ’em.

2. Make your camping plans early, as these spots fill up quickly. If you’re able to camp during the week, you’ve got a better shot at snagging a popular spot than you do on the weekends.

3. Group camping requires an advanced reservation, and the price often varies by the size of your group, the time of year, and which site you’re looking to use. Online reservation is available in most cases, but we recommend giving the park a call to reserve your group site.

Deception Pass State Park | Oak Harbor

You’ll find this group campsite just off the entrance to Deception Pass State Park, along the eastern shores of Cranberry Lake. A beautiful spot with grassy knolls, raised grills, and plenty of picnic tables, your group will have all the space they need to pitch tents or park vehicles or RVs when you camp here (note that there’s an extra $10 fee for additional vehicles). As a bonus, leashed pets are allowed.

Swim and fish in Cranberry Lake on sunny summer days, or beach comb along the saltwater shores that are right out your door. At night, the fire circle makes for cozy cooking and s’mores roasting, and the expansive lawn invites everyone to play games during the day. Plus, check the park website to see upcoming family events, like live concerts at the Deception Pass State Park amphitheater, held every Saturday in summer.

Maximum: 50

Online: deceptionpassfoundation.org

Pine Needle Group Site | Naches

If a more remote, rustic group campsite is what your crew is after, this one in Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is a great option. It’s set along the American River and nearby Goat Rocks Wilderness is where you can get your hiking fix. But sticking around camp is an option too, where you’ll find picnic tables and fire rings for use.

Plan to catch fish in the river and explore the American Ridge Trail on a sunny day. One thing to note: Vault toilets are the norm here, so keep that in mind when you’re making your camping plans.

Maximum: 60 people

Online: fs.usda.gov

Tolt-MacDonald Park | Carnation

Getting to the group campsites at Tolt-MacDonald Park is an adventure of its own: You’ll need to cross the Snoqualmie River over the park’s 500-food suspension bridge! (Wagons are available to help get your things across the bridge.)

Once you’re settled down in camp, you can go hiking or mountain biking on the trails at Ames Lake Forest, or head out on a bicycle tour of some local farms from the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. If you happen to be camping out there in the fall, you can watch chinook salmon spawning in the river while eagles and ospreys circle above, looking for the perfect catch. The campsite is level and features many open fields, so bring a ball or a frisbee and enjoy the downtime!

Maximum: 40 or 60 people, depending on the site

Online: kingcounty.gov

Rasar State Park | Concrete

You’ll find this group campsite off of I-20 in the North Cascades, along the Skagit River. One of many in the area, it’s got three group campsites to choose from, and each one has everything you need to set up camp and stay a while, including a shelter with running water and lights, granite fireplaces, and picnic tables.

Keep everyone entertained with lawn games, ranger programs, and multiple trips to the playground. And if you’re traveling with dogs, they’re welcome here, as long as they’re on a leash. Cabins are available to rent here as well (and one of them is also pet-friendly!) if you’d rather stay in a bit more comfort. Be on the lookout for wildlife, and don’t forget to look up—eagles are frequent visitors to this space, especially in early fall and winter.

Maximum: 50 people

Scenic Beach State Park | Seabeck

At this group campsite, the name says it all. Located on the Hood Canal, it’s a tents-only kind of campsite that offers families and friends lots of play options during their stay. You can swim in the cool waters, go fishing, and hunt for crabs at the beach. There are multiple playgrounds for kids to climb and swing on, and wildlife abounds. Cook out or use the kitchen shelter (which has electricity), then relax and enjoy your meal at one of the 60 picnic tables.

Our travel tip? Visit nearby Guillemot Cove where you’ll find the cutest secret treehouse tucked off the winding trail, and more Hood Canal beachfront with breathtaking views. You can also wander down the scenic garden trail and check out the gazebo, a popular wedding venue. In spring, look out for the blooming wild rhododendrons! Scenic Beach State Park is dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry family members too.

Kalaloch at Olympic National Park | Forks

Kalaloch boasts gorgeous views for campers: It’s set on a bluff overlooking a rugged coastline lined with driftwood. It’s a perfect place to birdwatch, as many birds and other wildlife make their home in the protected sanctuary island just offshore. For hiking options, the Kalaloch Nature Trail is a very family-friendly, easy trail that the kiddos can enjoy as much as the adults, ending with an ocean overlook for spectacular views.

The campground has grated fire pits for use, as well as picnic tables, potable water, restrooms, and even animal-proof food storage. The group campsite, in particular, is only a few minutes away from Kalaloch’s Main Lodge, which can provide you with any supplies you may have forgotten, a hot meal if you’re not in the mood for a cookout, and even souvenirs from the gift shop.

Maximum: 30 people (10 people minimum)

Online: thekalalochlodge.com

Dosewallips State Park | Brinnon

This campsite is for the more experienced campers, as varying conditions throughout the year might require that you provide your own water. You’ll also need to be aware of how high you’re camping: fires above 3,500 feet aren’t allowed (but stoves are).

The bit of extra work is worth it, though, for the incredible surroundings. You’ll be camping out in the middle of a moss-carpeted forest and sharing the space with wildlife like the spotted owl and local elk herds. For some beach exploration and clam-digging, head to nearby Hood Canal or wander down Dosewallips River (no swimming here—the river currents are swift and can be dangerous). Or, if you have a hankering to explore more, there are some historic forts and charming small towns to the north.

Be aware that the road leading to the campground is a rough one, and is often closed due to washouts. Call ahead to ask about road conditions before you go, as getting to the campsite from a different parking area isn’t always easy on foot.

Maximum: 20-50 people (depending on the site)

Online: parks.wa.gov

Mora Campground | Forks

Part of Olympic National Park, this coastal campground gives families easy access to scenic Rialto Beach, where you’ll find sea stack rocks and Hole-in-the-Wall, a volcanic relic. It’s a tidepooler’s paradise and beachcombers haven that really requires an overnight stay to enjoy. Just be sure that you check the tides before you go! The website warns that it’s quite possible to become stranded when high tide comes in and covers certain areas.

The campsite is nestled among the rainforest’s characteristic mossy trees that tower overhead, and the site has everything you need to camp in comfort: flush toilets, running water, and picnic tables.

Maximum: 30 people

Online: nps.gov

Blake Island Marine State Park | Kitsap County

Blake Island is a true oasis, accessible only by boat. (You can bring your own boat or hop on a water taxi). It was once a campground for the Suquamish tribe, and legend has it that Chief Seattle was actually born here! The island is a peaceful space surrounded by blue waters, miles of trails, driftwood-scattered beaches, and views of the Seattle skyline and Mt. Rainier. Nature exploration is a huge draw here, with chances to glimpse deer, raccoons, and rabbits, or head to the water for fishing and scuba diving opportunities. At the end of the day, wander over to the Cascadia Marine Trail campsites for a gorgeous view of the sunset over the Olympic Mountains.

Note that there’s no running water or electricity available on site, but pit toilets and potable water can be found throughout the campground. Be aware that Blake Island rangers are known to enforce camp rules to an extreme degree so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the rules before you go.

Maximum: 50 people

Online: parks.wa.gov

Camano Island State Park | Camano

Camano Island is the quieter, less popular sibling of the busy Cama Beach State Park. Camano’s group campsites are perfect for a quiet getaway, complete with easy hiking trails, beaches, and scenic views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and Mount Rainier. The adjoining Saratoga Passage offers visitors boating, crabbing, fishing, and sailboarding, or you can hike the one-mile trail over to the neighboring Cama Beach to check out the newly restored 1930s fishing resort.

The group campsite has one kitchen shelter, as well as restrooms and showers.

Maximum: 100 people

Online: parks.wa.gov

Flowing Lake Regional Park | Snohomish County

Flowing Lake Regional Park, also known as Leckie’s Beach, is a great campsite for water lovers. Groups staying here get access to the beaches of Flowing Lake, where you can go swimming, boating, or fishing, relax at a picnic table, or see what’s playing at the amphitheater. A family-friendly nature trail surrounds the campground and a playground for kids is also found on-site, to keep all members of the family engaged and entertained.

Campsite amenities include a heated restroom with showers. This campsite is popular so reserve ahead of time to secure a spot!

Maximum: 50 people

Grab your holiday wish list and head to these spots for meet and greets with The Big Guy and Santa pictures

There is no better time to make a family memory than the holidays—from heading out to see Christmas lights around the city, to finding that just-right tree to decorate before you’ve even finished up those Thanksgiving leftovers. While a photo in front of the tree or around the table is a way to preserve those memories, nothing says “Christmas” quite like Santa pictures. When you have the kids in tow, figuring out where Mr. Christmas himself will be is not a simple job. That’s why we’ve rounded up the best places in Portland to snap a pic with Old Saint Nick. While Seattle parents grapple with the teacher’s strike, the unexpected change of plans of having kids back at home doesn’t have to mean hours worth of electronics and tv time (although no judgement if that’s what you gotta do—here’s our picks for what we’re watching on Netflix this month). But if you’re looking for something fun and unusual to do (or have been looking for an excuse to check out some of Seattle’s hidden gems), now’s your chance. The best part? These activities don’t have to take a lot of time out of your day so if you need to get back for a zoom meeting or are tag teaming with another family to cobble together child care, these outdoor activities around Seattle are made for days like these.

Note: To support parents and families during the delayed school start, the City of Seattle will be providing a range of free, drop-in services for school-aged kids starting Monday, September 12. Registration for these services opens September 8.

Explore the New & Improved Imagine Children's Museum

a whale hangs from the ceiling at the new imagine childrens museum ecosystem exhibit near seattle
courtesy Imagine Children's Museum

When it comes to epic children's museums, the newly expanded Imagine Children's Museum in Everett is winning everyone over. It re-opened to the public September 7, and it's a great reason to head north on a day off. In addition to their existing exhibits, they've added over 33,000 square feet of new play space to their three stories. The biggest hint of the change is the tower crane outside (psst... kids can actually climb into it and overlook Wall Street from the Engineer It! Zone).

The new improvements start with Woodlands Adventure on the lower level. In addition to a canopy featuring ropes of all kinds (think bridges and tunnels) kids will love the expanded Wildlife Rescue Clinic, the Snohomish Bicycle Tree, and the chance to camp, boat, and fish below the tree. The second floor is where you'll find a new Puget Sounds EcoSytem exhibit featuring a intertidal aquarium, an interactive kinetic sand table featuring the Puget Sound area, and the chance to walk through a whale skeleton. This is also where you'll find the Distribution Center that you don't need to be a mail fan to enjoy. Who doesn't love sliding packages down chutes and loading them on conveyor belts over and over (and over) again? The Engineer It! Zone is a great companion to this playspace. It's also where kids can hop into the tower crane cab that overlooks the street.

When it comes to outside activities this museum has plenty. The rooftop playspace is nothing short of amazing. And it got a quick facelift during the expansion too. If you haven't been in a while, make the trip today.

Good to Know: The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

See the Salmon Run

When it comes to spontaneous outdoor activities, heading to a nearby stream to see the salmon run adds education to your playtime. Whether you've got the day or just an hour off with the kids, there's something magical about this quintessentially fall outdoor activity. Our favorite Seattle spot to hit if you're short on time is the fish ladder at the Ballard Locks. After you've watch the salmon, head outside to the see ships of all sizes (and a few kayaks too) make their way through the Locks from fresh water to salt water (or vice versa). It's a great anytime activity.

If you've got time to spare, we suggest checking out the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery. Drop in to take a self-guided tour of the hatchery, or if you've got time to plan ahead, reach out to the Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery to schedule a family guided tour. The Hatchery is open and running guided tours through October. Another great no-plan option if you've got time is Tumwater Falls near Olympia. We love the easy half-mile loop trail that runs down the creek. It's amazing how many salmon you'll see at the turn around point.

Insider Tip: The Seattle Aquarium is hosting the Cedar River Salmon Journey through October. These docent-led programs are a great way to see some salmon and learn about them too.

Visit the Zoo

Now is the right time to schedule that mid-week zoo trip you've been dreaming about. Ride the carousel, play in the Zoomazium, pet some critters in the Family Farm area (through September 30), and don't forget to see the bears. Woodland Park Zoo is open seven days a week and offers daily programming and experiences your kids will love. It doesn't get easier than this no-plan spot in the city.

However, if you've got time to spare, why not try a new-to-you zoo? Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma is just the right size for tots, with its not-too-big space that allows families to make it all the way around the zoo loop in a morning (or an afternoon) without missing a thing. Plus, it's got a Harry Potter-themed animal show. Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah is another just-right sized spot to visit with young kids. Or go big and bold and spend the day at Northwest Trek. About 90 minutes south of Seattle it's a day-trip-worthy destination. Ride through the grounds on the self-driving Wild Drive then let the kids climb, jump, and explore at the Kids' Trek nature playground before heading home.

Take a Fast Ferry to Bremerton

two kids splash in a fountain outside activities that looks like a submarine
Allison Sutcliffe

For a full day of play and adventure, leave the car behind and explore the many kid-friendly activities within walking distance of the Bremerton ferry dock. Start the day at the USS Turner Joy, a floating museum. This large Naval Destroyer is a kid magnet; from the moment they get on they'll have a blast climbing up, down and through the ship, finding everything from crew quarters to radar towers to engines way down low. The museum is open seven days a week through October when hours change to Wednesday through Sunday. Keep the maritime theme rolling with a stop at the Puget Sound Naval Museum. This free museum is open to the public Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesdays), and chronicles the naval history of the PNW. Kids can get a glimpse into the life of a sailor through the more than 18,000 objects on display. End your day at the Harborside Fountain Park on the water. With plenty of room for parents to spread out and relax while the kids play in the submarine-themed fountains, this is one of the best hidden gems around. Volcanic water eruptions from the fountains delight everyone and keep the kids busy for hours on end. When the day is done, hop on the ferry for the relaxing trip home.

Good to Know: For another easy ferry trip, head to Bainbridge Island.

Bring Your Bikes to a nearby Trail

If you’re looking to go the distance on a totally do-able path with the kids, the Snoqualmie Valley Trail offers over 30 miles of (mostly) continuous biking that stretches from Duvall through Carnation, all the way up to Rattlesnake Ledge outside of North Bend. It loosely follows the Snoqualmie River, and passes through lush landscapes, over bridges, and through tunnels that add to the sense of adventure. There are plenty of spots to hop on, and most offer level riding that’s perfect for families.

Insider Tip: Duthie Hill Bike Park is another great option if you're riding the fat tire. It’s like Disney for bike lovers of all ages.

Play All Day at Enatai Beach Park

Lake Washington is always a great spontaneous spot to spend the day or just a few hours. And at Enatai Beach Park in Bellevue, families have everything they need at their fingertips. Not only can the kids climb, swing, and slide on the waterfront playground, but they can build epic sandcastles and swim in the shallow waters of the beach too. Spice up the day with a paddle by renting SUPs or kayaks at the REI Enatai Beach Park Boathouse. If the weather holds, this is a safe and scenic spot to introduce kids to the sport or paddle around, even if you're all experienced.

Insider Tip: Crossroads Park is another Eastside destination playground that'll keep the kids playing all day. There you'll find a skatepark, playground, plenty of paved trails for scooters and bikes, and a splash pad. Plus, we love the food hall at Crossroads when you need a bite (hint: there's a Dick's there too) and who can resist a shopping stop at Daiso

Go on a Family Hike

There's no shortage of easy family hikes to take in Seattle, and heading out with your low hikers on is about as easy as it gets for families looking for an outdoor adventure. If you've only got an hour or so, head to Discovery Park, Seward Park, or the Washington Park Arboretum to wander the trails and get some fresh air. But if you've got the day, we suggest checking out a waterfall trail. With so many kid-friendly options, it's a great mid-week excursion that doesn't take much planning. If you really want to experience waterfalls, it doesn't get cooler than sliding down one. Check out our guide to Denny Creek natural waterslides to plan your day on the Eastside. Plus, who can resist a magical trail full of gnomes? It's another Eastside favorite that's a hit with kids.

Head to Seattle Center

When it comes to one-stop-shops for play, Seattle Center has it all for families. Four museums, a food hall, a playground that's as intriguing to kids as it is to adults, plenty of grassy spaces to picnic or play, and an incredible fountain that dazzles everyone.

To start, if you haven't had a chance to get to PacSci since its summer re-opening now's a great time to check out this family favorite. Open Wednesdays through Sundays, families can sit down to a science demonstration, wait for butterflies to land on their fingertips in the Tropical Butterfly House, and see stars in the Planetarium. If you don't have a membership, grab your tickets at least one day in advance to save on admission.

The Armory is another hot spot for families looking for something to do. Grab a MOD pizza or lunch from Skillet before heading down to play at the Seattle Children's Museum. Kids will love the new art space, the improved Bijou Theater, and all the exhibits that let them play in a vet clinic, grocery store, construction site, and post office. Before heading home stop at the Artists at Play playground and head duck into MoPOP.

Explore Seattle's Waterfront

Like Seattle Center, Seattle's Waterfront is an easy spot to play when you don't have a plan. Offering plenty of outdoor activities, and just as many indoor options, you can spend all day here or just a few hours. If you ask us, families should start at the Seattle Aquarium, where you'll find all kinds of fish and marine mammals doing their thing. Expect educational talks and feeding times throughout the day, and exciting hands-on activities for kids too (the touch tank is tops). Continue your play time with a ride on the Great Wheel and a chance to fly at Wings Over Washington. Pike Place Market and the Olympic Sculpture Park aren't too far. If your crew is game, they should definitely be on your outdoor activities list.

Insider Tip: For a similar experience that may be less crowded, check out South Lake Union. The Kid-struction Zone at MOHAI and its many exhibits will keep the kids busy for hours if you want to play inside. But if outdoor activities are what you're after, bring swimsuits and towels to the secret beach along Lake Union, or rent a free pea pod boat from the Center for Wooden Boats to get out on the water. And of course, no day is complete without a trip to Flastick Pub for pizza and mini golf.

Play Seaside Detective

One of the easiest low-plan outdoor activities in Seattle is going tidepooling with the kids. And you don't need much to make it happen. Head out with your bucket full of sand toys and plan to stay for an hour (or spend the afternoon) searching for all kinds of elusive marine life you won't find anywhere else. Moon snails, sea stars, and hermit crabs are all hiding in plain sight along Seattle's rocky shores.

Insider Tip: The best spot to spy underwater creatures is at the ferry docks when the tide is out. It's a true treasure trove.

If a seaside hunt is what you’re after, tide pooling at a nearby beach in Seattle is the way to find it, even on an overcast day. And with record low tides coming up in June, now’s a great time to get out and explore the shore. Your budding marine biologists can peek under rocks and sift through the sand to find sea stars, crabs and anemones in their natural environment when they’re out at one of our favorite tide pooling beaches. So grab your bucket and water shoes, it’s time to play detective, ocean-style!

Know Before You Go: Be sure to check the tide charts before you head out. The best time to go tide pooling is during a low tide with a negative number. In Seattle, any time of the year is good, as long as the tide is low enough. Psst...winter months tend to get lower low tides and the beaches are less crowded, but air temps can be chilly, so be sure to bundle up.

Golden Gardens Park - Ballard

Bring all the beach toys to this sandy north end oasis because it isn’t just for tide pools. Mini marine biologists will love turning over rocks and eying the shallows on the lookout for new, sea-worthy friends. Once their quota’s met, they can break out the shovels and buckets and get to work on an intricate system of rivers and dams that might just hold when the tide comes in. Add in a trip to the awesome pirate-themed playground and you'll see why this place is a sunny day family fave for a reason!

Constellation Park Alki Beach - West Seattle

Allison Sutcliffe

While Alki may be the popular beach in West Seattle, Constellation Park is where all the cool kids hang out to look for sea anemones, marine worms and more. Just south of the Lighthouse at Alki Point, this stretch of shoreline makes some of the best tide pools in the city. Not only will you find plenty of watery shallows along the rocky beach, but there’s also an old pipeline that shows itself at low tide. It’s where sea stars, moon snails and other creatures have made their homes. Best part? When your little marine biologists are done exploring, you can hit Alki for some lunch, sandcastle building and park play. Don’t forget the beach toys for this excursion!

Double Bluff Beach - Whidbey Island

When your furry family members want in on the action, head to Double Bluff Beach on Whidbey for the day. It’s definitely a tide pool hot spot, but it’s also a massive off-leash dog park. When the tides are out, it’s pretty much a walk-onto-the-beach-and-start-exploring kind of situation for little sea life seekers. And with miles of shoreline to explore there’s room to spread out and expand the search when each little pool’s curiosity quotient has been met. Along with hermit crabs and sunflower stars, Double Bluff Beach is a driftwood fort builder’s dream. Kiddos will love constructing their own or laying claim to an abandoned fort deserted long ago. This is one for the whole fam!

If your mini marine biologist also doubles as a train-conductor-in-training, be sure to check out this north end beach for some double-whammy explorer action. There are plenty of crabs and sea anemones to be found among the stubby, aging pier pilings that only come out at low tide (sometimes it’s hard to see the pilings through the purple masses!). But for many kiddos, the trains that rumble through will hold just as much wonder. You can watch them up close from the pedestrian bridge that connects the parking lot to the beach. Or watch them recede in the distance from the beach, while you make time with some creatures from the deep. Add in a trip to the playground and you’ve got a perfection daycation getaway!

Redondo Beach – Des Moines

With beach as far as the eye can see, Redondo Beach in Des Moines is a great spot just south of the city to find fabulous sea life. But that’s just the tip of this exciting expedition. Families can also launch kayaks, stroll along the boardwalk and fish off the pier. A total marine mecca, this is also where you will find the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST). Our tip? Plan your tidepool excursion on a Saturday and swing by MaST for their free Discovery Days to see sealife indoors and out.

Mukilteo Lighthouse Beach - Mukilteo

Watching the ferries shuttle back and forth may give exploring mushy marine animals a run for the money as the top attraction at this community beach. Either way, heading north is a win-win on a sunny day. Along the rocky shore, be sure to check around an old pipe that’s sure to have creatures lurking inside. It’s right next to the boat launch, which is another hot spot for cool creatures who love hanging out on the pier as much as we do! Fair warning, parking in this part of town is limited, especially on sunny weekends, so plan to get your Jacques Cousteau on at a less obvious time, if possible.

Seahurst Ed Munro Park - Burien

This south end park is a picnic-worthy destination for explorers of all ages. When the tides are low, wander the beach in search of watery holes where tiny crabs and little fish swim in such camouflage that it often takes a moment before tiny eyes can spot them. When the wiggles strike, take a break on the playground or walk one of the two maintained trails that extend on along the shoreline. And if the sun gets to be too much for your Seattle munchkins, take cover in the trees on the nature trail. It’s the best of both worlds.

Saltwater State Park - Des Moines

via instagram

Maybe it’s the artificial underwater reef. Maybe it’s the creek that runs out to sea. Whatever it is, there’s something a little magical about the tide pools at Saltwater State Park in Des Moines. This is definitely a popular beach at low tide, and it pays to wander a little, away from the main drag, to find just the right spot to perch and observe. There’s plenty for rocky shoreline for everyone! And the upside to being on the flight path for SeaTac is letting little aviators gawk at all those jumbo jets as they fly overhead. Don’t forget your Discover Pass to visit this state park.

Point Robinson Lighthouse Park - Vashon Island

Just a quick ferry ride away, Point Robinson Beach on Vashon is a great place for sandy tide pools and rocky ones. When the waters take a hike, kiddos will delight at the many animals they’ll find lurking in these two different environments. And with a few trails and a lighthouse added into the mix, it makes the ferry ride totally worth it. Bring a picnic and spend the day exploring the shore on this island.

Local Beach Science Programs for Families

best seattle tidepool beaches include beach naturalists with kids on the shore
courtesy Seattle Aquarium

Taking part in the Seattle Aquarium's Beach Naturalist programming is an easy way to enhance a typical tide pool afternoon. Program volunteers take to the local beaches during the summer to answer questions and help families find cool stuff in tide pool nooks and crannies. They are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to finding and learning about all the creepy crawly sea life you’re bound to see. They also help teach the next generation of environmental stewards about the delicate balance of Puget Sound wildlife. To keep everyone safe, please wear face masks and practice social distancing when you participate in this free program.

The naturalist programs run during the summer at Seattle-area beaches, including many of the beaches on our list, plus a few others. They're timed just right for low tide fun, and dates for the 2022 program start in May, over Memorial Day weekend. Just look for the red flags on the beach. The naturalists will have red caps on too.

Families can also explore during low tide with Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium's Explore the Shore program. Held at the recently renovated Owen's Beach, it's a chance to learn about the biodiversity of local sea life. Mark you calendars for the 2022 dates: June 17, July 15 and August 12.

What to Wear

Like the Scouts say, be prepared, especially when checking out the local tidal inhabitants. Rain boots and water shoes (or thick socks) work best for climbing over slippery seaweed-covered rocks and traipsing through puddles in search of the next find. A change of clothes runs a close second for things you definitely want to pack. If it’s sunny, a sun hat and sunscreen will be handy to have in the diaper bag. And when all’s said and done a little hand sanitizer (or even some wipes) will make sure all those Puget Sound germs don’t hitchhike back to your house on little hands.
