Safari West

Come to Santa Rosa for the exotic animals and stay for the one-of-a-kind overnight glamping experience at the Safari West wildlife preserve. The heavy canvas tents—imported from Africa—have hardwood floors (albeit polished), and the sounds of wildlife give the feel of camping, while heaters and ceiling fans provide home comforts. While the luxurious bedding is nice, the highlight of the experience for all ages is the more than 800 animals that roam these acres. (Note that the tents are separated from the wildlife for safety reasons.) Take a 3-hour tour of the property on an open-air safari Jeep (must be age 4 or older for this). Ahoy, sailors! Grab your sleeping bag and pillow and spend the night aboard the U.S.S. Lexington, a retired aircraft carrier that has been docked in the Corpus Christi harbor since 1991 as a living history museum. Overnighters are also treated to a nighttime scavenger hunt, a movie in the 3D MEGA Theater, a few good old-fashioned ghost stories, a flag ceremony and two trips through the chow line.

Hint: The ship is large and there are stairs, so wear comfortable shoes.

Just because you know they’re last-minute Christmas gifts, doesn’t mean anyone else has to know

Oh, trust us. We get it. Yes, the holiday season is fun, full of cheer, friends, family, food. All the good stuff, really. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not incredibly busy. Like, incredibly busy. There’s barely time to make it from Place A to Place B, to decorate, coordinate, get dressed, and maybe sleep somewhere in there. Gift shopping is seriously tricky to squeeze in. Sure, it’s the 12 Days of Christmas starting today, but we’ve got last-minute Christmas gifts that’ll make it to your doorstep in 2(ish) days, thanks to Santa’s bff—Amazon Prime.

There are gifts for babies, kids, teens, tweens, him, her, all right here. They’re thoughtful, fun, and definitely look like they’re anything but last-minute Christmas gifts. From things that they want to things that they need, you’ll probably find yourself scooping up several goodies from our list and saving time. All you have to do is wrap them. Or, actually, Amazon will do that for you, too, so you can send presents directly to everyone on your list in no time flat. So you can focus on way more important things (like eating Christmas cookies. Or whatever.).

Best of all, you don’t need to bring your passport

Scuba lessons, lazy pools, catamaran excursions, horseback riding, and forest hikes are among just a handful of offerings that families with young ones can enjoy in Puerto Rico. Sure, the beaches are the main draw but additional activities to keep the kids occupied are always welcome. And for children curious about the environment, the area’s biodiversity affords many learning experiences in nature, such as sea turtle hatching and iguana feeding! We love Puerto Rico as you feel like you are getting away from the U.S. but you don’t need a passport to travel there.

San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino | San Juan

An unbeatable location and a variety of adult and family-friendly entertainment choices await you here. Complimentary bicycles to ride across the Puente Dos Hermanos, a bridge connecting Old San Juan to Condado, along with safe designated bike and jogging lanes for the entire family is just one unique offering at the San Juan Marriott. Two outdoor swimming pools complete with a double-helix waterslide and whirlpool is another. And don’t miss the children’s game room and a gelateria serving classic and island flavor homemade gelatos.

Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve | Dorado

Among the many activities offered at Dorado Beach Ritz-Carlton Reserve is the Rockefeller Nature Trail, an 11-mile course experienced by bike, foot, or golf cart. Other outdoor options are ziplining, horseback riding, and cave explorations. Conservation plays a big role here with immersive programming for all ages, including educational games about the environment for kids aged 4-8, night sky observation for youth aged 9-16, and underwater exploration for families with kids aged 9 and older. Catamaran and yacht excursions are also available for guests.

Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve | Rio Grande

Just a stone’s throw from the foothills of the El Yunque rainforest, Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Rio Grande brings you Puerto Rico’s largest lagoon-style pool and the county’s only Top Golf Swing Suite. From an interactive Hibachi restaurant to fun food trucks, dining options are aplenty. Their Villas en la Reserva features spacious suites with kitchenettes. And if adults want to enjoy the full-service spa or a cocktail, the resort can arrange babysitting services as well. Nearby family-friendly attractions include hiking, ATV rides, surfing, and zip-lining.

Caribe Hilton | San Juan

An outdoor children’s playground, on-site snorkeling, and underwater ‘snuba’ diving, a tropical garden with a koi pond, peacocks, and views of the historic San Gerónimo Fort await at Caribe Hilton. The property has a partnership with a local manatee conservation center and features a ‘Manatee Caretaker for a Day’ program where kids can get up close with local wildlife. The resort also partners with a graphic novelist, the creator of La Borinqueña, Puerto Rico’s first superheroine, to offer comic book events that teach kids about important issues like sustainability.

Copamarina Beach Resort & Spa | Guanica

There are many ways to truly enjoy time out in vitamin sea at Copamarina. Aside from kayaking and paddle boarding, the resort’s hobbie cat is available for charter, as are options for a sunset cruise. Scuba and snorkeling are offered, and kids can enroll in swim lessons too. With a little over 100 rooms and a few villas to choose from, this is one of the smaller resort properties available in Puerto Rico. Enjoy a game of tennis, table tennis, or volleyball with the family, or take it easy and relax by the ocean.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort | Rio Grande

Head straight to the north shore for a Caribbean getaway. This Wyndham property comes complete with three pools, a water slide, daily programming like iguana feeding, and excursions into El Yunque National Park. The best place to stay is in a family suite which comes with a king bed for adults and a bunk bed for kids. And if you need to confirm the weather gods are in favor, check out both the live beach webcam and golf webcam on the site and you’ll be pleased with your choices.

The water park is a destination in and of itself offering a speed slide, vertical drop, lazy river, and massive infinity pool to spend hours in. You’ll find a number of guided activities for guests including hiking, fly fishing clinics, and yoga. You can also book a massage appointment.

We definitely recommend booking a half-day horseback ride while at the Ranch. Stables are located just across the street from the Ranch and their knowledgeable guides will take you on the trails so that you can get a bird’s-eye view of the valley. There’s nothing like seeing this gorgeous area on the back of a horse!

Alisal Guest Ranch | Solvang, CA

Alisal Guest Ranch/Nicki Sebastian

Alisal Ranch is an old cowboy ranch—a working one that dates back to 1843—and it has been welcoming guests since the 1950s. One of our favorite things about Alisal is what a great job they’ve done combining the fun activities of a ranch with the pampering of a resort. The ranch feels low-key and welcoming to the whole family (where many resorts often leave you feeling like they wish you’d left the kids at home), but never skimps on the creature comforts.

What to do: Whether you want to spend the weekend riding the range (or taking your first horseback lesson), eating at a campfire, catching fish, being pampered at the spa, listening to the roosters crowing, reading a book by the pool, gathering eggs, playing an 18 hole private golf course, tasting local wines or hiking, you’ll all find the perfect activities.

There’s even a 9-bedroom home with a Millennium Falcon bedroom

Sure, staying at an on-site Disney World hotel has its perks—namely, being a gondola ride or a monorail stop away from the action—but if you’re willing to forego the Disney bubble, there’s a lot you can gain from staying outside of the Disney World resort. How does an actual indoor playground sound? Or a bunk bed that doubles as a pirate ship? Or a bedroom that’ll make you feel like you’re sleeping in the Millennium Falcon? Whether you want to stay in the Star Wars universe or a Frozen land, here are the coolest Disney-themed Airbnbs near Walt Disney World.

This OMG Airbnb With a Star Wars Game Room and (Two!) Indoor Twirly Slides

Star Wars room in Disney-themed Airbnb near Disney World
Airbnb

This. House. Is. Awesome. Ready to blow your kids’ minds? This Airbnb is practically a theme park in itself, with bedrooms that double as playgrounds, complete with whirling slides and games galore. But that’s not the only time you’ll be saying “Whoa.” The Trolls room has another twirly slide, this one covered in colorful troll-ish fur and accessible through a grass-covered rainbow doorway! Kids will have a perfect movie night in the home’s lush theater room, with recliner seating for everyone. When it’s time to sleep, the seven bedrooms range from elegantly adult to whimsically kiddish, with stuffed animals propped on beds, colorful murals on the walls, and Disney touches all around that your little explorers will love to discover.

This 7-Bedroom House, Where Every Bedroom Has a Theme

Airbnb

Your kids will have plenty of choices when it comes to where to lay their heads at night: Do they want the Frozen room, with 15 costume dresses in the closet? From the “Haunted Mansion Landing” inside to the “Seven Dwarves Cottage” outside, this 7-bedroom home has enough themed spaces that you’re bound to find at least one to connect with — there’s even a life-sized raptor dinosaur held captive in a cage in the backyard, plus a “Jurassic Lab” with artifacts and a Power Wheels jeep for little paleontologists to climb aboard. For grown-ups, the safari-themed room, the Cocoa Beach room, and the Arabian Nights rooms are elegant bedroom spaces without being too kitschy. There’s also a screen-enclosed (for bugs) outdoor pool and jacuzzi.

Harry Potter Meets Frozen at this 9-Bedroom Estate

Airbnb

Universal or Disney? You won’t have to choose between the two at this sprawling property, which has nine bedrooms (and nine bathrooms!) to choose from and thematic elements from both studios. The 6,700-square foot home has odes to both Disney and its Potter-loving rival, plus a Jurassic Arcade Room and 13-seat movie theater with recliner seats and stadium seating. Grown-ups will appreciate that the themed portions of this home are limited only to the two kids’ bedrooms (which sleep 8, in total) and the arcade. The rest of the place is immaculately adult (but still “kid-friendly”), with a dining table for 15, subdued colors throughout, upscale furniture, and a gorgeous outdoor pool and spa with a rock grotto. It’s also right next to a conservation area so is surrounded by palm trees and greenery.

Outside, there’s an impressive entertaining space with a TV and dining room plus a resort-style pool where you’ll want to spend all your time (Hint: You can see the Disney fireworks on a clear night!). Kids will love the indoor arcade—which has a twirly slide plus enough games to keep everyone busy. There’s also an indoor movie room that’s impeccably designed to look like a drive-in movie theater.

It’s Princess vs. Pirates vs. Star Wars at this Airbnb

Airbnb

Whether you’re on Team Princess or Team Star Wars, you’ll have a blast at this 8-bedroom Airbnb where pirates, princesses, and Star Wars characters come together, room by room. It’s a place where “going to bed” means climbing aboard a pirate ship, or into a castle, or aboard a Rogue One Imperial Walker; where every themed room has a full costume closet; and where the movie room houses a giant Jabba the Hut on one side and a stuffed wall of space suits on the other. There’s also an enclosed pool and hot tub, and a Cinderella carriage propped out front waiting to take imaginations to the ball. Oh, and it’s just 10 minutes from Disney!

This Frozen and Star Wars Themed Airbnb with Waterpark Access

Airbnb

This 6-bedroom Airbnb has a Frozen bedroom decked in Elsa Blue along with a Star Wars room with two bunk beds—plus four other non-themed bedrooms to offer some reprieve from the noisy bustle of the theme parks. But perhaps the best thing about this place is that it’s located inside a Kissimmee resort with enough amenities that you’ll want to schedule a whole day away from the parks to explore the grounds.  When you’re not at Disney, your kids can zip down one of five waterslides (there’s a whole structure for smaller kids, with smaller slides and a splash area), play beach volleyball, or dine with you at the upscale clubhouse restaurant. There’s also a gym, playground, and indoor children’s play area—plus daily shuttles to/from Disney, Universal, and Sea World.

The other bedrooms have a fun beachy vibe, with palm trees fronds drooping from the ceiling and nautical murals on the walls. Outside, a tropical pool and hot tub beckon, while the house itself sits just against a waterway, across from a golf course, and six miles from Disney World. Want to up your game? Add on a real treasure hunt (this can be arranged with the host), with hidden maps, clues, and a treasure chest full of goodies at the finish line.

This Airbnb That’ll Take You To a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Airbnb

The host calls this home a “live-in movie set,” and it’s no wonder why: From the Millennium Falcon twin bed surrounded by starry night walls to the “Cloud Bedroom” that has an under-the-bed fog machine to make it look like the mattress is floating mid-air, the force is strong all over this 9-bedroom home. Even the hallways are done up right, with faux metallic-plated walls that make you feel like you’re marching through an actual spacecraft. Of course, parents may want to spend a little time on Earth, so common areas like the kitchen and living room feel a little more terrestrial, with leather couches and simple black and white decor. Little Skywalkers will love the playroom, which has a pool table and ping pong table, and families will want to save some time for the outdoor pool, which is screened-in (er, force-fielded?  to protect from Florida’s notorious bugs.  And while you’ll feel “far, far away,” you’re actually only 15 minutes from Disney World.  No wormholes needed.
