Set up your child for a great start with this list of must-haves
Diapers? Check. Lunch? Check. A sleepy child? Check! If you’re wondering what to pack for daycare, and even if your childcare provider has a list of items kids will need on a typical day, some things can make all the difference in your little one’s day. From weather-appropriate gear to a family photo, here’s your handy daycare checklist of must-haves and why they’re important.
1. Labels Slap your kid’s name on everything, from bottles to clothes. We love Mabel’s Labels because they’re pre-printed with your child’s name, come in easy-to-use packs, and stay put through hundreds of washings. Put waterproof labels on your child’s bag, lunch bag, jacket, and inside shoes. If your child has food allergies, order allergy labels, too.
2. Bottles & Liquids Depending on how long your little one will be at daycare, you’ll need baby bottles plus breast milk or formula or, for older kids, a leak-proof water bottle. Be sure to pre-measure the formula. Most daycares have refrigerators or freezers available to keep liquids cold.
3. Lunch Bag & Bibs You’ll also need a lunch bag and bib if your little one eats solid food. An insulated lunch bag is best, as it keeps food cool and can be used later on for picnics and other excursions. We love the PackIt lunch bags with built-in cold packs.
4. Diapers & Wipes Gather up diapers in the right size, and send off as many as your little one will need at the start of each week, with a few extra just in case. It’s easiest to label diapers with a Sharpie. Be sure to send a labeled pack of wipes, too. And pack diaper cream if your little one is prone to rashes.
5. Spare Clothes Pack at least two spare outfits for your child. You never know when your little one will have a blowout or get food or art supplies on themselves, and childcare centers don’t usually have spare clothes in every size. Check the size and seasonality of the spare clothes in your bag every two or three months so your kiddo isn’t stuck in shorts two sizes too small in January. Oh, and don’t forget extra socks!
6. Medication If your child takes medication regularly, bring a brand new bottle with you in its original packaging. Most daycares have very specific requirements due to licensing and keeping little ones safe. Be sure to follow those requirements carefully so your baby’s medication is readily available and can be dispensed by daycare staff when needed.
7. Sunscreen & a Hat You want your baby’s skin protected during outdoor playtime, so packing baby-friendly sunscreen is a must. Send a labeled bottle of your favorite sunscreen, and add a sun hat for extra coverage.
8. Weather Gear Fresh air is brain food for babies, and most daycares bring kids outside as often as possible, even if it’s just for a few minutes. That means toddlers might stomp around in puddles or stare up at snowflakes. Pack weather-appropriate gear (boots, jackets, hats) so your little one is comfortable, no matter the weather.
9. A Family Photo Many daycares put family photos up on their walls or have them in a readily available photo album. Little ones love to look at pics of their family members—just like we do. Check with your child’s school to see if they have specific requirements for what types of photos to send.
10. Lovies Lovies make the transition from home to daycare a little easier, so it’s a must on our daycare checklist. Remember, while it’s a good idea to pack a favorite snuggly item, don’t send something irreplaceable (or buy a backup), as blankies can disappear. Also, ask if your daycare center has policies on what you can and can’t bring. Order a pair of matching lovies, like the snuggly offerings from Bunnies by the Bay, or the two-packs of security blankets from Copper Pearl, and you’ll be all set. A few days before the big drop-off day at daycare, hold the lovie to give it some of your comforting scent.
11. Lists of Your Little One’s Likes & Dislikes, Plus Paperwork Does your baby love a good lullaby before naps or hate avocados? Daycares usually send home paperwork that includes a getting-to-know-you child form, plus essential information like medical history and development and milestone updates. Fill out these forms and include any additional information your baby’s caregivers might need so they can take good care of your sweet babe.
Make sure to snap some photos of their first day of daycare—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.
You can find some gorgeous campsites from Big Sur to Mendocino
Want to watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean and fall asleep to the soothing sound of crashing waves with a beach camping trip? Thankfully we don’t have to go far to check off all those glorious camping boxes. The best part (besides the soothing sound and Instagram-worthy snaps): camping at one of these close-to-home spots is full of outdoor adventures where kids will be too busy playing in the ocean, flying kites, toasting s’mores, and exploring tidepools to ask for screen time…maybe.
Sunset State Beach: This campsite has a beach on one side and miles and miles of strawberry fields on the other. It has 90 sites for car camping, some able to accommodate RVs up to 30 feet in length (no hook-ups). The shade is minimal in some of the sites so bring a pop-up sunshade for the afternoon. The beach is just a short walk away (down about 100 steps) or if you are lugging lots of beach gear, you can drive your car, from your campsite, and park in the lot below. Good to know: Campsites are pretty close together and don’t offer a ton of privacy.
Manresa State Beach: Manresa is smaller than its neighboring state beach campgrounds with only 64 sites. All the sites here are walk-in which means you can park in the unloading zone to get your gear to your site but then you need to move your car to the upper lot for the remainder of your stay. Pro Tip: Bring a folding wagon for your gear to help transport it but it’s fully worth the effort—the campsites are on a bluff overlooking the ocean. As with any beach campsite, the temperature dips at night and it can be very chilly in the mornings until the fog burns off so make sure you wear layers and bundle the kids up at nighttime.
New Brighton State Beach: New Brighton is between Manresa and downtown Capitola. This campground offers 109 campsites including nine premium sites that overlook the ocean. Ten sites include RV hook-ups and they even have one bike and hike campsite that’s reserved for those who arrive via their own two legs. Paths lead you down to the beach or you can walk along the train tracks to get to downtown Capitola if you need to run to Village Creamery for a scoop of mint chip ice cream. Shade is sparse in some of the sites and make sure you bring quarters for the showers.
Plaskett Creek Campground: With the road to Big Sur open, Plaskett Creek is the spot to go. The campground is small and draws surfers, families, and those with a chill vibe. To access the beach, you need to walk about 10 minutes and down some stairs but the payoff is you get to spend the day at the pristine Sand Dollar Beach. Head to the bluffs at sunset for some gorgeous views. Because this is a National Park site, you can book up to a year in advance.
Kirk Creek Campground: Located within Los Padres National Forest, this campground sits on a bluff 100 feet above the ocean with 33 single-family sites for tent and RV camping (no utility hook-ups). Each site enjoys a fantastic view of the water and is equipped with a table and campfire ring with a grill. Vault toilets are provided throughout the campground but there are no showers or running water. There’s a trail to the beach (watch for poison oak) and hiking along the Vicente Trail nearby. Good to know: You can book sites here up to six months in advance.
Limekiln State Park: Ocean Camp is a few steps from the beach at Limekiln State Park in Big Sur. With just 12 camping spots, most located right next to the creek, Ocean Camp is typically booked out months in advance. The beach is accessed by walking along a sandy path leading under a bridge. Although not directly on the beach, the campsites are somewhat sheltered from the wind, which makes it easier to sleep, especially if you’re tent camping. RVs and trailers are permitted at this campground but don’t expect any electrical hook-ups. The bathroom block has showers and each site has a fire ring with grill plus a picnic table.
Half Moon Bay State Beach: 52 campsites sit just steps from the sandy beach that makes up Half Moon Bay State Beach. The benefit of this campground is definitely its proximity to the sand and you only have to lug the gear a short distance to set up shop for a day in the California sun. Need provisions or don’t feel like cooking? Downtown Half Moon Bay is just a short walk away (we recommend the sandwiches at the San Benito Deli—massive and delicious). Coin-operated hot showers are available if you need to hose the sand off the kids before bed.
Anchor Bay Campground: Head north to Mendocino County and you will be rewarded by the beauty of this small, six-acre, privately-owned campground. It lies in a narrow gulch filled with native redwood trees and other coastal flora and has been a family-friendly destination of choice since 1925. The campground’s 27 sites include four in the redwoods with the rest sprinkled along the beach. Each camp spot has a water hook up, picnic table and fire pit. A short trail from the campground takes you into the small town where you can get coffee and pastries from White Cap.
Kirby Cove Campground: Just eight miles north of downtown San Francisco, Kirby Cove is a camping destination that is popular with city families who want to experience camping without the long drive into the mountains. Four campsites are available and campers can enjoy the nearby coarse sand beach and views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Fog is prevalent so make sure you bring clothes that you can layer during cooler times of the day. Campers must provide their own water and foghorns may disturb your sleep (so pack the earplugs).
Point Reyes National Seashore: North of the Golden Gate Bridge is the rugged peninsula of Point Reyes National Seashore. There are two primitive hike-in campgrounds close to the ocean where adventurous families can get away from it all. These backcountry camps both require a permit.
Coast Campground is nestled within a small grassy valley, a short walk from the beach. There is no parking at the campsite itself, so you will need to haul everything from the Laguna trailhead 1.8 miles away. There are 12 regular sites and two group sites, with a vault toilet. Although the campsite has a water faucet, there is no guarantee it will be running, so bring your own water to be safe.
Wildcat Campground overlooks the ocean with a short walk to the beach, but there’s a 6.3-mile hike from Bear Valley Trailhead or a 5.5-mile hike from the Palomarin Trailhead. Again, you’ll find vault toilets and a faucet but little else.
Sonoma Coast State Park: Two separate campgrounds make up Sonoma Coast—25 sites at Wright’s Beach and 98 sites at Bodega Dunes. Beach access is easier from Wright’s Beach but both offer paths to the water where you might spot some whales if you are lucky. You may hear foghorns throughout the night so keep that in mind for light sleepers. Hot showers and flush toilets are available.
Have a date in mind when you want to book? Find out when the campsite reservations open up for that date and be ready to book as soon as they do. Sites gets nabbed within minutes.
Didn’t get your act together in time? Set up an alert for openings on the website. They often come through closer to your date as people cancel.
Got a large group that wants to camp together? Take a look at a group campsite instead of trying to get multiple sites near each other for the same dates.
Sign up for a site like Wandering Labs that will alert you by text when a site opens up. Note: you still need to be ready to act immediately when this happens as they will not last long!

Whether you are looking for a longtail, long john, or frontload trike cargo bike, we have the inside scoop on what works best for families
If you’re itching to get back in the saddle post-kids (sorry, SoulCycle doesn’t count), but don’t know where to begin, we have a solution—a cargo bike. Manufacturers around the globe have come up with creative ways to transport your entire clan on two or three wheels, which makes your journey back onto the bike path as easy as well, riding a bicycle. We’re breaking down 17 of the best family cargo bikes out there with the pros and cons of each. It’s time to ride!
While there are many ways to bike with kids—from bike seats to trailers to tandem bikes—in this article, we focus on the three styles of the family cargo bike: the Long John or Bakfiets, which has a cargo area in front; the Longtail, which has a room for kids in the back of the driver; and a Front Load Trike or Tadpole trike, which has a front cargo and three wheels for stability. Many of the bikes listed below are electric-assist, which makes biking with heavy loads or uphill much more enjoyable, according to cargo bike enthusiasts.
Let’s Talk Cost
While the high prices for many models are not for the faint of heart, some families justify the expense by using cargo bikes as a car replacement for daily school and grocery runs. If cost is still an issue, consider exploring the robust second-hand market, where cargo bikes can be purchased for a fraction of the cost, so be sure to check out our list of second-hand resources at the end of the article. Also, if you’re wondering if a cargo bike is right for your family, ask yourself these 14 questions.

These are some of the must-have Pride Month 2023 goodies we’re loving this year
It’s (somehow) already June. Yeah, we have no idea how that happened so fast, either. But it did. And that means Pride Month 2023 is here. The time when the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies come together to honor the progress made in the fight for equality and to recognize the major work that still lies ahead. Of course, there are vibrant parades and festivities. But Pride Month is also an important platform to amplify the voices and stories of queer individuals, fostering a sense of inclusivity and acceptance. It’s also the perfect time to talk to our kiddos about all the love and different identities that make the people we’re surrounded by so fantastically diverse.
In recent years, an increasing number of companies have stepped up to support the LGBTQIA+ community by launching a wide array of Pride products and we’re so here for them. These colorful and empowering items not only showcase solidarity but also provide a means for individuals to express their identities and spread awareness. From rainbow-inspired goodies to products created by members of the community itself, they all contribute to the ongoing quest for equality, acceptance, and, most importantly, inclusion. Tinybeans is here to support all families, and these are some of the Pride Month 2023 products that will help you and your family do the same, all year long.

We’ve got recommendations for car camping tents, backpacking tents, and even tents that will help your kids nap (fingers crossed!)
With summer inching its way in and vacation plans getting locked in, now is the perfect time to pick out your next family tent and plan a campout. We’ve got recommendations for car camping tents, backpacking tents and even extra dark tents that will help your kids nap (fingers crossed!). Camping with kids can be an awesome experience that is only made better with a little planning. Scroll through and get ready for your next outdoor adventure!
If you are stressed about setting up your tent by yourself, fear not! This is definitely the easiest tent setup we've come across and that's saying a lot. Bonus: you have openings on both sides of the tent so you won't wake your camping partner when you get up to make the coffee in the morning.
While many families like multiple doors to allow easy access to the tent, those with little campers might want to consider this single-door option from Kelty to keep the comings and goings to a minimum. The Kelty Tallboy comes in four- and six-person sizes and, as the name implies, has a very tall interior of 70 inches (72 in the six-person) that's perfect for getting the kids dressed in the morning. The reinforced fiberglass poles and color-coded scheme make for a sturdy and easy-to-use setup.
You'll love this barrel-shaped tent because it is sturdy when the wind kicks up and super easy to set up and take down. Two large doors make in-and-out access easy and color-coded poles mean you can totally assign set up to the tweens.
Best Introduction to Backpacking Tent for Families
We love this new backpacking tent from NEMO as it is spacious, includes a footprint and has a great price point. Two doors and vestibules provide easy access and gear storage. Light Pockets™, duffel storage bag and gear pockets complete the package. Add on a Pawprint, and you can bring your four-legged friend along without worrying about your pup's paws wrecking your floor.
This tent comes in 2-, 4- and 6-person options (we recommend sizing up to allow room for your gear). The covered vestibule allows for extra storage space.
Start your camping trip off right with this easy-to-set-up tent from Coleman. We love the added dark room technology that keeps out 90% of the sunlight. This is key for families with little ones who still need to nap during the sunny hours of the day (which is almost impossible with a regular tent). It also helps during the summer months when the sun doesn't go down until much later. An added benefit is that the dark room technology will keep your tent much cooler by blocking the sun's rays during the heat of the day.
The Blacktail Hotel from Big Agnes is a do-everything tent offered at an accessible price. It's light enough for the backcountry and strong enough for the front country. The Blacktail Hotel's fly doubles the living space of the tent—giving your family, your gear and your dog more than enough space.
This six-person dome tent features a separate screen room for insect-free lounging and extra sleeping space. We love it for summer camping because there is ample ventilation to keep it cool while you sleep. Two queen air mattresses and gear have plenty of room in the main compartment, and set up is intuitive due to the Fast Pitch™ system.
Look at the tent's floor space when deciding what size to purchase. A tent that sleeps four is going to sleep four pretty tightly (often alternating head to foot). If you want space for gear and air mattresses you will likely want to increase the size of your tent.
Practice setting up your tent in advance. There's nothing worse than arriving at a campsite late in the day or in the dark and having no idea how to set up your tent.
Think about what extras you might need for your tent. Does your tent come with a footprint? Should you bring a tarp to put underneath to keep the moisture out? Extra tent pegs and a rubber mallet always help with tent setup, especially on a firm surface.
Weatherproof your tent before you go. Water resistant is not the same as waterproof. Apply seam sealer to keep water out of your tent.

From April 16-29, shoppers can drop off their old car seats in designated drop-off boxes located near Guest Services at most Target stores (in-store drop-offs only!). In exchange, you’ll get a coupon to use through the Target app or target.com/circle for 20% off one new car seat, stroller, or select baby gear, such as play yards, high chairs, swings, rockers and bouncers that can be used both in-store and online.
Target
Target will accept and recycle all types of car seats, including infant seats, convertible seats, car seat bases, harness or booster car seats, and even car seats that are expired or damaged. Not only do you get a great deal on a new item, but you’re also helping to create less waste as Target’s partner, Waste Management, will recycle materials from your old car seats.
Additionally, you’ll be ensuring that other parents are not buying second-hand car seats that could be well past their expiration date or damaged from an accident from online marketplaces.
Since the program began in 2016, over 2.19 million car seats and 32.9 million pounds of car seat materials would otherwise end up in a landfill. The bi-annual event is part of Target’s larger initiative, Target Forward, which seeks to eliminate waste and enhance sustainability practices.
So if you’ve got that old car seat sitting around that isn’t accepted through your own curbside pickup or has expired, head for the Target car seat trade-in event starting Apr. 16. The environment will thank you.

Bring the kids to these ski resorts near Portland so they can learn the ropes—make that slopes—this season
Winter is here, and while Portlanders know that means rain in the Rose City, it also means snow in the mountains. That’s why now is the perfect time to take the kids skiing or snowboarding at a nearby Portland ski resort over a long weekend or whenever you’ve got time. Offering everything from lessons on the gentlest bunny hills around to expert black diamond runs your kids can aspire to conquer, these spots top our list for winter family fun. We’ll keep wishing for more of the white stuff so you can hit the slopes with the kids all the way through March.
Fantastic Places to Ski near Portland
Mt. Hood Skibowl
Shutterstock
With close to 1,000 acres of terrain, 69 day runs, and over 300 inches of snowfall each year, there are hours of fun to be had at Skibowl. And the short drive from Portland makes it a great starting point for Portland families interested in a ski day. Beginners have lots of choices at this ski mountain, including runs at Skibowl East near the snow tube and Adventure Park, plus kiddie snowmobiles, a kiddie carousel, Frosty’s Playground, and an indoor play area when they need a break. Lessons are available for kids as young as 4 (including snowboarding), and it's easy to sign up when you get there. But Skibowl isn't just for beginners. This ski area also boasts more black diamond runs than at any other ski resort in the state.
Good to Know: Night skiing is definitely a thing at Skibowl; their 36 lighted runs easily tell that story. Part of the nighttime mountain fun? Cosmic tubing.
Drive time from Portland: Just under 1 hour
87000 U.S. 26 Government Camp, OR Online:skibowl.com
Meadows offers varied terrain that challenges skiers at all levels on over 2,150 acres. From Heather Canyon to South Canyon, and from Buttercup to Show Off, there’s something for everyone. For children between the ages of four and fourteen, camps, lessons, and clubs are available. You can purchase your lift ticket or season pass online in advance.
Insider Tip: For something a little different, try a snowshoe tour at Mt. Hood Meadows. They're family-friendly (although usually best for older kids) and some run through March, so you've got plenty of time to plan one this year.
Good to Know: If lessons aren't something your kids are up for, you can drop them at the Meadows Daycare. One of the only ski resorts in the nation to offer state-certified care for kids as young as 6 weeks, parents can sign kids up for the day or for a run of days so they can get in all the runs. Just be sure to get your reservations ASAP as spots are limited.
The fact you can ski for 10 months out of the year, and the addition of Summit Pass (formerly Summit Ski Area), makes Timberline an easy choice for Portland families on the hunt for a ski resort they can return to year after year. Get to know the 1,685 acres of skiable terrain at both Timberline and Summit Pass with the kids. Summit Pass is a great spot for beginning snowboarders and skiers alike. It's also where you'll find the snow tubing lanes. It's a great option for families looking for lessons and affordability. Six high-speed quads, two doubles, and one surface lift get families where they need to go. And although the two terrains aren't yet lift connected, there are plenty of shuttle options so you can try their both on your trip.
Insider Tip: Timberline's terrain parks offer everything from the Schoolyard (perfect for beginners) to Conway's big jumps. Even if the kids aren't ready for it yet, it's fun to watch others tackle the snowy jumps and rails.
Good to Know: Beginning ski lessons are available for kids as young as 4 on weekends (and holidays) only.
Located on the north side of Mt. Hood this historic ski area (it's one of the oldest in North America) offers lots of rideable terrain for first time skiers and boarders. An affordable option for families, this ski area is on the smaller size. The double chairlift will bring you to the top of the runs where you'll find gentle blues, a few greens, and one black diamond. Kids ages 7 and up can learn the ropes on the tow rope when they sign up for a group or private lesson. No matter which option you choose, the price is hard to beat.
Drive time from Portland: About 90 minutes
10755 Cooper Spur Rd. Mt. Hood, OR Online: cooperspur.com
For a full day or better yet a family weekend trip, Hoodoo Ski Area in Sisters, just outside of Bend, is a worthy destination. You'll find it at the summit of Santiam Pass, drawing visitors from all over the state, thanks to its central location. The mountain has five lifts and 34 runs that are a nice mix of green, blue, and black, so no matter how many times you've taken to the slopes (one or 100 times), you'll have plenty of powder to explore.
Insider Tip: The Autobahn Tubing park is currently closed due to staffing shortages.
Good to Know: Winter weekends here offer up a little something extra, like mountain mascot Harold the Hodag's birthday on February 18, Winter Carnival the following weekend, Ski Bike Fest in March, and more. Be sure to check their calendar for upcoming extras that are worth the drive.
Escape the speed demon crowds, and enjoy downhill’s quieter winter kin—cross-country skiing. Enjoy 24 kilometers (that's about 12 miles) of groomed trails, relative solitude, and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood once you pass frozen and snow-covered Teacup Lake in the Mt. Hood National Forest. There are groomed tracks and a skating lane, and all are groomed Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Teacup’s pristine trails stay that way because dogs and snow shoes are not allowed; that plus a friendly emphasis on a particular standard of trail etiquette. When you need to warm up, head to the Ray Garey Cabin to shake off the cold.
Insider Tip: If you're a family a first-timers, Teacup offers an array of learn-to-ski classes for kids as young as 6.
Good to Know: An Oregon Sno-Park permit is required to park here. Only pit toilets available on-site.
1. Expect shorter skiing days, especially if naps are still part of your family routine. Runs open early, so you can make the most of your day by getting up and at 'em as early as possible. Then heading back down the mountain around afternoon nap time. There's no doubt the kids will be tired after a day on the slopes.
2. Snacks and water are a must. No matter where you're eating on the mountain, everyone always seems to be hungry at the same time. Avoid meltdowns by packing extras for hungry kids, and avoid wait times by eating around peak times.
3. When it comes to buying gear, kids' growth spurts make buying a little frustrating financially, so renting is a great option. Although the one piece of gear to purchase (according to experts) is a good helmet.
4. It’s always a good idea to check weather and road conditions at ODOT's Trip Check before heading out for the day. Snow conditions on the mountain are a must too. All of these resorts have condition cameras that livestream so you can plan your day to go as smoothly as possible.
These candy stores in NYC have what you crave for Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day will be here before you know it, and if you’ve got kids you know they’re expecting at least a little something sweet from you to celebrate (hey, it can’t be organic veggies all the time, right?). Luckily, we know just the place for you to find goodies for your sweethearts, both big and small. In fact, we know several places to get any kind of candy or chocolate you might desire—we’re talking fine chocolates, bulk candy, vintage candy, Swedish candy, and more. So the next time you’re in need of a sugar fix, head to one of these candy stores in NYC.
Located on Park Slope’s Seventh Avenue, Fferins of Brooklyn packs a wide variety of goodies into a relatively small storefront. Its eclectic and far-reaching offerings include nostalgia candy (Pop Rocks, candy necklaces, Astropops, and more), British imports (Aero Bar, Cadbury Flake, Wispa Gold), and artisanal treats for sophisticated palettes. Plus: Harry Potter candy, uncommon beverages (Bob Ross Energy Drink anyone?), and bulk candy for pick and mix also line the shelves.
This Coney Island institution has been serving up candy apples in the Big Apple for over 75 years. It’s hard to pass up a candy apple with rainbow sprinkles to eat along the boardwalk. But if apples aren’t your thing, you can also count on Williams for lollipops, fudge, and ice cream to get you through.
Arguably the definitive NYC candy shop, the Lower East Side’s Economy Candy is an institution established in 1937. This “Nosher’s Paradise of the Lower East Side” stocks over 2,000 kinds of candy and other goodies that you’ll find packed floor-to-ceiling. Whether you’re looking for the newest treat on the candy scene, nostalgic candy brands from decades past or an incredible selection of vintage trading cards from shows and movies like Alf,E.T., and Mork & Mindy, you can find it here.
Insider Tip: If you’re overwhelmed by the jam-packed layout, try Economy Candy’s online store, where you can search candies by hue to get perfectly color-coordinated hauls.
While it’s not a longstanding, beloved New York institution, if your child loves Sour Patch Kids, Sour Patch Kids NYC could be a fun outing. Yes, it’s a huge store dedicated to those tart tykes, with every flavor and type for sale, as well as over-the-top creations (ice cream, waffles, etc.) at the “Sweets Bar.” Lots of SP merch is for sale as well, and you can hop in the Sour Patch NYC cab for a photo op before you leave.
You’ll find Dylan’s Candy Bar locations all over the country now, but the company, brainchild of Dylan Lauren, debuted in NYC in 2001. The NYC store is located in Hudson Yards and features the brand’s stylish and wildly colorful, candy-centric aesthetic. All the candy bases are covered here: bulk, chocolate, lollipops, gummies, sours, nostalgia, and more, but Dylan’s is also a good spot to hit for candy gifts with a little extra, such as chic treat-filled “tackle boxes”, special Valentine’s collections and pops, and over-the-top candy towers, candy “cakes,” and even a chocolate “bash cake” filled with confections. They can also whip up a DIY Candy Buffet for your next party.
While Swedish candy store Sockerbit is no more, Bon Bon (“A Swedish Candy Co.”) is open to satisfy all of your Swede candy needs and more. Gummy creations such as Swedish Fish are of course on the menu, with a selection of fish from popular maker Kolsvart offered. Plus: Swedish lollipops, gum, beverages, and even Swedish delicacies. Bon Bon’s mixes are fun and festive, with curated collections of sweet, sour, jelly/marshmallow, and even gluten-free and vegan. Good news if you’re the type to crave Swedish sweets after bedtime (or at least the kids’ bedtimes)—Bon Bon is open til midnight.
Another NYC institution, Forest Hills’ Aigner Chocolates is widely recognized as producing some of the finest chocolate in the city. Founded in 1930, the shop creates its Austrian chocolate using time-tested recipes and vintage machines. Valentine’s Day is a big deal here, of course, and Aigner’s offers a wide range of chocolate treats and pops in shapes and flavors of all kinds. The bedazzled chocolate video game controller is sure to win your gamer’s heart, and you can’t go wrong with a sprinkle stripe pop.

8. Philip’s Candy
The exterior may not be much to look at, but Philip’s Candy is a local favorite in Northern Staten Island. The Staten Island extension to the now-closed “Coney Island’s Oldest Candy Shop,”—it was founded in 1930—Philip’s has a quiet mom-and-pop atmosphere, an old timey charm, and lovingly crafted chocolates and candies. Signature treats include fresh fruit hand-dipped in melted chocolate, chocolate-covered marzipan and graham crackers, and flavored popcorn. Just remember they’re closed Mondays.
