There’s just something about an old-fashioned photo booth. Despite it feeling a little archaic in the age of the cell phone, it’s hard to pass on the opportunity to step behind the velvet curtain to snap a few fun-filled photos. Nowadays, believe it or not, there are still some traditional photo booths in New York—and a select few still use film. (What?!) For an alternative to the formal family portrait, cram into one of these little photo booth “studios” and let the magic happen! Want more nostalgic fun around New York? Head to NYC’s family-friendly arcades! Or for some old-school New York fun, try these “vanishing New York” spots!

Where to Find Classic Photo Booths in NYC

1. The Ace Hotel

The Ace Hotel is an NYC gem any time of the day. Grab a meal, a quick coffee (they serve Stumptown afterall), or enjoy its free lobby WIFI to get some work done, all while your kids enjoy the legendary photo booth. Located in the Flatiron District, this spot is also fun to go grab drinks and dinner without the kids as well!

2. DeKalb Market Hall at City Point

There are many reasons to visit the downtown Brooklyn mall of City Point (the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater, Trader Joe’s, McNally Jackson bookstore, etc.). Yet another is DeKalb Market Hall, a food hall featuring vendors selling bites and beverages of all kinds. There is also a photo booth here, found right at the foot of the escalators. It’s $5 for a strip, and you can share to your social accounts right from the booth if you want.

3. Kiehl’s

The folks at Kiehl’s want you to capture how radiant their products make your skin look right in store. Head to the brand’s Meatpacking District location to capture your picture-perfect complexions.

4. UNIQLO Fifth Ave.

Shopping and taking pictures sounds like a match made in heaven, especially when you have the kids with you. (It’s a good way to keep them from getting bored.) We guess that’s what UNIQLO had in mind when it installed a photo booth inside its massive 89,000-square-foot flagship store on Fifth Ave. Take note!: It’s free for a strip of four pictures. (You will no doubt “pay” for the snaps with the purchase of some of the brand’s duds.) Also good to know: there’s a Starbucks inside the store and cell phone charging stations, so you could stay a while…

5. 7B Horseshoe Bar

This spot goes by three names: “The Horseshoe Bar”, “Vazac’s”, and “7B”. On the outside it looks like a classic Lower East Side dive bar, because, well, it is. But it’s got more than that going for it on the inside. With a bar that’s actually shaped like a horseshoe, major LES cred and grittiness, this place has also made cameos in major films like the The Godfather II, Crocodile Dundee, and The Verdict. Its latest star turn? In the incredible, dimension-bending Netflix series, Russian Doll.

6. The Smith

Getting your kids ready to enjoy brunch at The Smith is as easy as “1, 2, cheese!” the restaurant’s Midtown, East Village, Lincoln Square, and NoMad locations all have photo booths for you to enjoy, with some located in the basement by the restrooms, and some, like in NoMad, actually in the restroom.

7. Joe & The Juice

Is your face photo-ready thanks to kale and beet smoothies? If so, stop by Joe & The Juice to grab some healthy grub and snap a few photos in its photo booth (near the back of the shop). This is one of the more spacious juice/café spots in NYC, so feel free to bring the kids and stay a while.

The M&M store is the ideal spot for kids to explore the magical world of chocolate and document it all with a photo booth keepsake. 9. Bubby’s Tribeca

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and pies! Oh my! More than two decades ago Bubby’s started off by baking pies, and now it’s a full-fledged restaurant with a couple of locations around the city. Portland Christmas tree farms are opening soon. Make your U-cut plans now, while you still can

Bring the magic of the season into your household with the scent of fresh pine and hard work. There’s no better way to deck your halls than with a U-cut tree from one of the best Portland Christmas tree farms around (although if we’re honest, a trip to see the Christmas Ships runs a close second). Whether it’s your first time in the fields, or you and the kids are old pros, make plans soon—these trees don’t stick around for long. So, bundle up, pack a thermos of hot chocolate, and head out on a wintery adventure with the kids.

Editor’s note: A few of these Portland Christmas tree farms are experiencing tree shortages and are only open for a weekend or two. Be sure to plan ahead if you want a fresh-cut tree this year.

1. Plumper Pumpkin Patch & Tree Farm

This spot opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving and gives a selection of options for your holiday tree choosing. You can either pick out your favorite Christmas tree from their store, use one of their saws to cut your own down, or have a friendly member of the staff cut the tree for you. Have the kids feed the farm animals and then warm up inside the store with hot drinks and try one of their homemade pumpkin donuts. If you’re lucky, Santa might visit while you’re there.

2. Quail Creek Ranch Christmas Trees

If you don't want to travel too far to find your Christmas tree, Portland families, look no further than this family-owned farm in the city. All you need to do is bundle the kids and head out to find the perfect tree in their 20-acre field. Choose from Noble, Douglas, Grand, Fraser, Nordmann, or Turkish Firs to gather round at home. They also have Serbian Spruce trees if a fir isn't your first choice. Enjoy hot cocoa, cider, and candy canes in the warming house when you're finished. Or walk the property's many trails if the sun is out before you head home.

3. Furrow Farm

This is your one-stop spot for gorgeous trees with all the trimmings (think mistletoe, wreaths, and garlands)—plus a whole lot of festive holiday fun to boot. Choose from a variety of both pre-cut and u-cut firs up to 15 feet tall. This is a beautiful third-generation family farm that raises hazelnuts, cattle, and horses alongside their seasonal trees. Enjoy a free tractor ride on weekends, walk their beautiful trails, then spy the varied farm animals.

4. Lee Farms

Seven generations of family farmers here grow several varieties of trees near Portland, including Noble, Nordmann, Grand and Douglas firs. Choose from their already-cut selection of trees or wander the fields to pick out one to cut yourself. This spot will cut, shake, and bale the tree for you, so you don't have to do much, if you don't want to. They'll also flock your tree for an extra charge, if you're seeking a snowy look. And if you get hungry, they have a market and bakery open throughout the week.

Good to Know: They are closed on Thanksgiving.

5. Christmas Mountain Choose & Cut

Make sure you make a reservation to visit this fourth-generation family-owned tree farm near Portland, where you can find Noble, Douglas, Grand, and Nordmann firs to cut down yourself using tree farm's bow saws (leave yours at home). Staff is on hand to help you with cutting, if you need, and they also offer free tree shaking and baling, and will carry your tree back from the fields. Stick around for the festive atmosphere!

Insider Tip: Santa and Mrs. Claus visit on weekends when you'll also find wagon rides, a gift shop, and fresh wreaths made on site.

6. Thornton’s Treeland

Tucked minutes away from downtown Vancouver, Thornton’s Treeland offers not only trees but a beautiful lifesize Nativity scene, hot chocolate and coffee in their rustic old barn. You’ll also find wreaths, crafts and even some treats for the kids in the barn, as well as a petting zoo. They also offer hayrides through the trees, where you can take your pick of firs like Douglas, Noble, Nordmann, Fraser and Grand (prices vary by variety).

7. JTB U-Cut Christmas Trees

At JTB Christmas Trees in Gresham your family can have a fun time walking through the fields and picking out your own tree. This beautiful farm has over four acres of Noble, Grand, and Douglas firs to choose from. There are no pre-cut trees, so come prepared to cut! They provide all of the tools you need to easily cut down and transport your tree, and they offer free shaking and baling to clean out the debris and make it easy to install in your home. Only cash or personal checks are accepted here.

8. Helvetia Christmas Tree Farm

The magical red barn at Helvetia is full of local gifts and decor like handmade wreaths and lavender products. Elsewhere, you can find an open fire pit with free marshmallows, and visits with Santa Claus; you can make a whole magical afternoon of it at this family farm. Noble and Turkish trees are available for u-cut, at heights of up to 10 feet, with free shaking and baling.

Good to Know: Plan ahead—because of this year's tree shortage they’re only offering one weekend of u-cut on November 25 to 27 and another weekend to pick out pre-cut trees only on December 3 and 4.

9. Sauvie Island Farms

After the berry-picking crowds of summer have dispersed, and the pumpkin season is over, it’s time for fir trees at this popular third-generation family farm. U-cut Douglas, Grand, and Noble fir trees are available, alongside fresh wreaths and cedar garlands. While this Portland tree farm doesn’t come with all the holiday activities, these prices can’t be beat (just $50 a tree), so you have some extra cash for more presents or goodies. Plus, they've got saws so you can cut your own tree, and they offer tree bailing too. But they won't be offering wreaths or garlands this year.

Good to Know: Due to low inventory, Sauvie Island Farms will only be open for U-cut Christmas trees on November 25 and 26, 2022. If they do not sell out on those days, they'll open that next Friday and Saturday too.

10. Pollard Ranch Christmas Tree Farm

This farm has about 35,000 fresh cut or U-cut trees at various stages of growth, including many in the 5-7 feet range. For something a little different (or maybe for the kids' room?), you can pick up a table-top tree that will grow larger for use in future years. You can also get your fresh wreaths, garlands, and tree stands here, too. Short on time? Pre-order your tree online before you stop by.

Good to Know: Pollard Ranch offers home delivery limited only to the Portland metropolitan area.

Behold the Epic Sanderson Sisters in the 1st Full Trailer for ‘Hocus Pocus 2’

We finally learn their origin story

It’s been almost of year of anticipation as we wait for the Hocus Pocus 2 trailer, but it’s finally here and we can already smell children. Disney+ has released the first actual glimpse of the Sanderson sisters, 29 years in the making.

In an Instagram post back in January, Executive Producer Adam Shankman revealed that the sequel would debut on Disney+ during the Halloween season.

“Now more than ever, people need to laugh. We should be laughing every day, and there is so much fun to be had with these three unbelievable women playing delicious characters from such a beloved film,” says director Anne Fletcher. “I am so grateful to be able to play a part in bringing these witches back to life, and to be working with my friends at Disney again makes it all the more special. This is a movie for everyone, from the fans who grew up with the first film to the next generation of viewers, and I can’t wait to get started.”

The trio returns when someone lights the Black Flame Candle and resurrects the sisters, who will, of course, be played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. They’re out for revenge and it’s now up to three high school students to stop the rampaging witches in Salem.

In the newest trailer, we also finally get a glimpse into the Sanderson Sisters as teenagers and we’re hoping that means we’ll get the entire origin story. It also revealed the first glimpse at Billy Butcherson, a “good zombie.”

Hocus Pocus 2 Cast

Doug Jones, who played Billy Butcherson in the original, will return to reprise his role. He is the only male actor to return for the second film. Keep an eye out for Hannah Waddingham, Tony Hale, and Sam Richardson, who are joining in on the sequel fun. Anne Fletcher takes over for the OG director Adam Shankman, who has a scheduling conflict.

Missing from the cast will be Omri Katz and Vinessa Shaw who played Max and Allison in the initial film. Fletcher tells Entertainment Weekly that “It was very difficult to try to have them be a part of it because we did talk about it—painstakingly. You’re trying to stay on track with the story, even if they came in as a cameo. People would say, ‘They could be in the background!’ and I’m like, really? You’re going to put the leads of the first movie in the background and be satisfied? You’re not going to be satisfied, you’re going to be angry.”

Celebrate Christmas in October with 41 New Movies from the Hallmark Channel

It’s almost time for the most wonderful time of the year, if you’re a Hallmark movie lover. Unlikely new romances between small-town woodsmen and high-powered executives are almost here, courtesy of Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas and Miracles of Christmas programming!

Starting October 22, you can watch all-new movies every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m. But if that’s not enough entertainment, you can also watch a new movie every Saturday at 10 p.m. on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been a favorite among young readers but it’s never been brought to life through animation. Now a new generation can follow Greg Heffley, his best friend Rowley and the rest of the gang as they navigate middle school. The trailer just dropped and we’re definitely tuning in on December 3!

The film is guaranteed to please OG wimp fans––it’s written and produced by Jeff Kinney himself. Fans can expect to see all of Greg’s shenanigans as told through his imaginative diary writing, with some important life lessons learned, too.

Of the film, Kinney shares “This film feels like the book come to life, and it’s exciting to see Greg Heffley and his family and friends in their fully-animated glory. Remember Doogie Howser, M.D., the show that gave Neil Patrick Harris his big break and had us all cheering for a teen doctor? Disney has reimagined that concept for the next generation with Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. The original series premieres September 8 on Disney+ and the trailer is available to watch now!

In Hawaii, 16-year-old Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha is juggling a budding medical career and the ups and downs of teenage life. Fortunately she’s supported by her close-knit (and hilarious) group of family and friends! The show is shot on location in O’ahu and it’s created and executive produced by Kourtney Kang (How I Met Your Mother, Fresh Off the Boat).

Peyton Elizabeth Lee stars as Lahela and the show promises a number of top guest stars. Keep your eyes out for Margaret Cho, Randall Park, Jae Suh Park, Max Greenfield and more.

Crayons for a Cause: This Non-Profit Gives Those Old Crayons New Life

Do you ever wonder what happens to those crayons your kid gets for pre-dining entertainment at restaurants? Unfortunately, many get thrown into landfills—and the wax takes decades to decompose. In better news, the non-profit Crayon Collection is taking action to solve this problem.

Gently used crayons still have lots of life! So the Crayon Collection recruits restaurants to pair with local high-poverty Title I schools and Head Start centers. Each month, the recipient schools pick up the left over crayons from the restaurants to bolster classroom supplies. Schools that want to partner with a restaurant can email the non-profit to get started.

Crayons can also be redirected from schools and homes with plenty of supplies to schools in need. The Crayon Collection helps facilitate crayon drives around the country, which helps kids learn about eco-consciousness. You can also help out by collecting your gently used colors and donate them in your community.

Sheila Morovati, a first-generation Iranian American, is the president and founder of the Crayon Collection. She helped the organization set a Guinness World Record with the largest crayon donation in history—more than one million were donated to schools and Head Start Centers in Los Angeles.
