We’ve got great ideas to help you make your hometown even better. Mr. Rogers would approve

There’s no time like the present to shower your neighborhood with a little extra love. You’ll teach your kids what it means to be a part of a real community and maybe even get to know a few new friends. From neighborhood scavenger hunts to Little Free Libraries, scroll down for community improvement ideas that can make your hometown just a little bit (or a lot!) more awesome.

1. Create an Instagram page for your community. Start documenting what makes your 'hood special, ala Bill Cunningham, whether it's the trees, the architecture, the people, or maybe, all of the above. This is something you can do while on small walks around your hometown and is a great way to share the messages of hope and inspiration out there.

2. Make seed bombs. This is a simple project, and it doesn't require a green thumb. Use this easy tutorial from Practically Functional, and then toss your supply in the dirt along roads and freeways. We suggest you use native wildflower seeds to curb any invasive species.

3. Redesign a crosswalk. Cities all over the nation are setting up community crosswalk programs, which allow artists to add an extra flair to the pedestrian's right of way. Keep in mind, things might be slower to happen because of staff considerations, but you can get the inspiration and apply now.

4. Plan to create a pocket park. Bringing more green space to urban landscapes takes time and planning, so now is a good time to start. The National Recreation and Park Association has a great guide on how to get one started.

Amber Guetebier

5. Dedicate a bench. Arrange for extra seats to be added to an outdoor space in honor of a loved one or just a spot to stop and sit for a spell.

6. Shop local. When you buy from a local business, you keep dollars where they belong—in the community. In this time of small-business closures, this is more important than ever. Many cities have started Facebook groups that promote local businesses and restaurants, and innovative businesses and restaurants are offering delivery and curbside pickup. Businesses that are closed, like your favorite hair salon, can be supported by buying a gift certificate now to use later.

7. Perk up your local park. See a broken swing or slide? Want to get new equipment added? Call your Parks & Rec department and share your thoughts. When things open back up, everything will be ready for kids to play, play, play.

8. Have a sidewalk chalk challenge. Sidewalk chalk is making a comeback, and it's always fun to spend time in the front yard, getting to know your community.

9. Volunteer or donate to a local food bank. Even if you aren't able to physically donate your time to a food bank, consider making a donation, as food insecurity is currently at an all-time high.

Gabby Cullen

10. Create a free little library. It'll be the best thing to happen to your neighborhood since Mr. Rogers. Check out our tips on how to create one here.

11. Support local schools. While there might not be spirit nights right now, your local schools might be running online fundraisers for students or teachers. Check your local school district website to find out more information.

12. Help out an older neighbor.  Reach out to see if you can pick up their groceries, prescriptions or dinner one night. Check out a few other ways to be a good neighbor here

13. Bike around town. Using your bike more often helps create the demand for more trails and lanes—and that means less car traffic.

iStock

14. Perk up your front porch. A statement door, a fun welcome mat, and flower pots are all easy ways to brighten up your home and your neighborhood.

15. Organize a neighborhood scavenger hunt. Whether it's animals, hearts, states or inspiring messages, organizing a community-wide search is a great way to get outside and to get to "know" your neighbors. You can share your list of finds with other families online and encourage everyone to see the beauty of their town...while still respecting social distancing.

16. Slow down. There are plenty of reasons why driving slower in a neighborhood makes sense—there have even been studies that prove it's a safer option for everyone involved.

17. Practice guerrilla gardening. Claim a plot of unused dirt for yourself and start planting. Click here for ideasor to find other guerrilla gardeners nearby.

18. Join the local open space alliance. This is the group that will fight to create a walking trail/wildlife refuge instead of another subdivision.

19. Jumpstart the Kindness Rocks movement all over again. Little pieces of art scattered around town? It's the perfect way to spread joy without being in a group. Find out how to get started here

Mimi's Fresh Tees & PDX Love Over Hate

Mimi's Fresh Tees
Kamelah Adams, referred to as Mimi by close friends and family, is a NE Portland Ore. native. If you are looking for some new threads for the family, you want to put these hoodies and tees on your "must buy" list. Founded in January 2018, Mimi’s Fresh Tees is a Portland-based t-shirt company that amplifies tough social justice conversations and allows people to wear their truth. Motivated by systemic racism her Black son experienced in the education system, owner and designer Kamelah Adams wanted to create a product that brought conversations around discrimination out into the open, in a quick and straightforward way. She started designing t-shirts as away for people to take a stand, break the silence and start a dialogue by wearing their truth.

Green Bean Books

Jennifer Green is the owner of this whimsical red-painted children's bookstore in the beloved Alberta Arts District. Beyond the hand-picked selection of children's books and the big green reading couch at the center of the store, there was the community of families that met weekly for multilingual story-times, craft sessions, and music circles. While all of that has changed since COVID-19 hit, this business is still bustling. She created an easy-to-use online ordering system, and the small team of booksellers is available daily by phone for book recommendations and ordering. With the ability to order just about any book through their distributors, including adult books, they encourage customers to pick up the phone and purchase a book if they don't feel safe coming is. However they are excited to announce that the shop is open again! They have put together a list of rules, so make sure to check for the changing requirements. Clean and safe curbside pick-up is available as well.

Raving Artists Tattoos

via Raving Artist

Raving Artist is an LGBTQ, Woman-Owned tattoo parlor offering body art in a bright, fun and friendly setting. Portland parents love their tattoos, and now you can enjoy getting one in a studio with inviting and colorful lighting as well as music played to your taste! Courtney Castman created her studio with the intention of moving away from darker settings that play heavy  metal music to set the mood and opted for developing an environment that is modern, relaxing, and upbeat. While she joyfully creates any tattoo her clients request, her love for Oregon and nature comes through in the pieces she creates which primarily consist of flowers, foliage and stunning landscapes you can find throughout the state. Castman has won favor among local moms because of her cool environment, awesome work ethic and dedication to offering her customers the perfect amount of conversation (or quiet) while they are under her needle.

Signs of Justice

Signs of Justice

Jameesa Oakley and her husband already had a sign printing business, but when Trump was elected, they decided to use their vocation to impact social change. Their online shop now features striking yard signs, bumper stickers, and apparel featuring progressive statements on a range of issues, available for bulk order. Red Tricycle asked the Oakleys what they loves about what they do. "Our graphics bring progressive truths to the mainstream," Jameesa says. "The narrative in America is changing and we believe we played a small role." During the pandemic, the Oakleys have encountered supply chain issues and have had to use their creativity to overcome them. "It tested our resolve," the Oakleys say. "We’re stronger because of it."After the George Floyd murder tapes were released, demand increased more than Signs of Justice could have ever expected, and orders were temporarily delayed. "We couldn’t believe how kind and patient most people were. Love is winning."

Flouriche Preschool

With over 24 years of experience working with children, Paula Rogers founded Reggio-inspired Flouriche preschool with the intention to combine the best of three guiding principles for developing minds: flourish, nourish, and niche. “The best part is the laughter and natural compassion that I am privileged to witness every day,” Rogers says. During the pandemic, the community has had to adjust to many changes designed to keep kids safe, from daily health checks to rotating mealtimes in order to reduce the number of children at the table. They’ve also begun incorporating Zoom circle times to include children who are unable to come to Flouriche, in order to help children feel connected. Flouriche stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement that is resounding all over the world, and has started a Facebook group for discussion around the history of racism. Rogers says she loves idea sharing and would love to connect with other diverse preschools in Portland, as well as develop a scholarship program for children who want to attend Flouriche but may not be able to afford it.

Honeybee Lemonade Syrups

Andrea Wade originally served Honeybee Lemonade Syrups with sparkling water from the window of a West African & Caribbean fusion food cart. In 2019, her handmade artisan syrups hit the shelves, free from preservatives, artificial flavors, and sweeteners, and with a devoted following. With flavors like Mango Coconut Jasmine, Strawberry Raspberry Rhubarb Lime, and Peach Lychee, these shelf-stable syrups are made from whole fruit and can be used to flavor beverages, yogurt, as an ice cream topping, and much more. Wade's 17-year-old daughter helps with the daily operations of the business. When the pandemic hit, the mother-daughter team began offering no-contact door drop delivery and using their creativity to drive sales, much of which plummeted during the pandemic due to the cancellation of many spring and summer vending events. Honeybee Lemonade Syrups currently offers online orders and can be picked up in New Seasons Market and Market of Choice. Reflecting on the challenges she experienced in starting her business, Wade shares that, "...there is still a tremendous amount of work to do to dismantle systemic barriers for Black business that often keep us out. It is my hope that we will continue to work in solidarity because Black Businesses Matter!"

Fat Cupcake

Fat Cupcake

Anjelica Otness started Fat Cupcake for good reasons: she has always loved eating dessert, she enjoys the creativity of decorating cupcakes, and she wanted to create an environment where people feel loved, welcome, and known. “I love sharing the joy of a cupcake and celebrating exciting life events or being there when things are challenging,” Otness says. She jokes, “It's also a perk to be able to eat a treat whenever you want." In the wake of the pandemic, Fat Cupcake has added extra safety precautions to prioritize team members’ and guests’ health and safety. And with the world’s increased support for the Black Lives Matter movement, Otness says they’ve seen a tremendous amount of support from the local community in placing orders, coming in for the first time, and promoting Fat Cupcake.

Is your family drowning in stuff? We’ve all been there when our closets have been full, drawers were overflowing, and our garages hadn’t seen a car parked in there in years. Where did all of this stuff come from, and how do you get rid of it? While it does take some time, it is doable, and there are lots of nearby places to donate used toys, clothes and kid gear that are taking up much-needed space at your place. Here’s what you need to know.

Where to Start

If you already know what items need to go, you’re off to a great start. If not, it’s recommend that you go from room to room with three boxes or containers marked: “To Keep”, “To Throw Away” and “To Donate.” Tackle those piles by putting items in the appropriate box. You might need to make some tough decisions on what not to keep, but experts suggest that if you haven’t used it in over a year, it’s time to toss it.

Where to Donate

Goodwill

where to donate toys clothes
Goodwill Industries

Seattle Goodwill provides job training and education to help individuals overcome barriers to employment. They offer 30 donation centers making it really easy for families bringing in pre-sorted used goods. If you'd like to give new life to toys, clothes and other small items, this is the spot to do it. The process is pretty quick during the week, but you might experience a longer wait time during the weekend, so plan accordingly.

What used items to donate: Right now, Goodwill is taking clothing, accessories, shoes, toys, sporting goods, books (and other media), household appliances and items. Most locations are accepting furniture donations, but not all, so be sure to check the list before you go.

Drop-off locations are at South Lake Union on Mondays and White Center on Wednesdays, both from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

What used items to donate: Diapers, wipes, hygiene items (baby wash/shampoo, etc.), infant bathtubs, potty chairs, bouncy seats, winter clothing (especially 0-6 months), books, toys, shoes, bottles, baby-wearing carriers and diaper bags.

The Brick Recycler

Pexels

If you have a LEGO lover in your life who's ready to release his or her (millions) of LEGO bricks and figurines, do not put them in your normal "donate box." Organizations like the Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. will just throw them away if they're not in a complete set and if you try to recycle them, the city will sort them out and send them to the landfill. Give your LEGOs a new lease on life by sending them to the Brick Recycler. They will then send sets of LEGOs to schools in low-income areas, foster care programs, hospitals, and other organizations are also in need of LEGO sets but don’t have the money to buy them. You can ship them your mixed bag of LEGOs (for free if you ship via ground service including UPS Ground and FedEx Ground) and they'll sort and pass your bricks along to future builders. What a brick-tastic idea!

Before you start your post-nap time stealth purge of the toy bin or (gasp!) before enlisting the kids in selecting a few of their treasures to share with a child in need, here are a few tips for donating used toys:

1. Make your donations count by only offering items that are truly "gently used" and in good working order. Almost all organizations will throw away broken, stained or otherwise unusable toys, clothes or other donations, including toys missing any of their parts. St. Vincent de Paul estimates their annual garbage bill at over $60,000 because of unsellable items that include things like shirts with stains or broken zippers or puzzles with missing pieces. Hint: Local subscription service, Ridwell is a great place to threadcycle non-wearable clothing.

2. Don't donate toys or items that have been recalled. Those drop-side cribs are a no-no, even if it was a gorgeous family heirloom that all your kiddos slept safely in.

3. Put fresh batteries in automated toys. Or include a new pack of batteries with your donation.

4. Sort your donations. Though it isn't a requirement, it really helps the donation stations process donations when items are pre-sorted. For an example, place all clothing in one bag and shoes in another.

5. Double check on questionable items. Plush animals are frequently not accepted due to allergens. Big-ticket items like play furniture or outdoor play equipment may not be accepted as many organizations don't have room to store these biggies, so you might want to give your local organization a call before you haul it over there. (Don't stress! We have some options below for such cases.)

6. Don't forget to ask for a receipt. Most places will give you a tax deduction for your donation, so ask for a receipt!

11 Cities That You HAVE to Visit in the Winter

New moms are often overwhelmed and may not be sure what friends and family can do to help once the baby arrives. Instead of greeting the new baby with yet another onesie or swaddling blanket, give a mom something she really needs. We have tons of suggestions for you! Read on to find gifts that help save a new mom’s sanity and will surprise her with your thoughtfulness.

Celebrate Her New Status

Meghan Bo Designs

Becoming a new Mom is a huge shift in identity, so give her something that celebrates this new role.

A necklace with her baby's initial, like these affordable necklaces from Meghan Bo Designs (above), are a great choice. This is an especially thoughtful gift for a new mom nervous about returning to work, since she can have a small reminder of her baby with her all day long. If necklaces aren't her thing, try initial earrings or a bracelet instead!

A small but thoughtful gift is Supermom socks from Lavley. These are perfect for new moms spending time pattering around the house in their comfiest clothes and moms who need a reminder of how well they are doing.

Since new moms need to drink a lot of water, a custom Well Told water bottle displaying the night sky on the night her baby was born will help her take care of herself while giving her a special memento she can take with her anywhere.

To be a great mom, it's essential that she take some time for herself (however hard that may seem). For the mom who may only be able to take a few minutes a day,  The Mindfulness Journal for Busy Moms by Anne Marie O'Connor is the perfect gift to help center her in less than 5 minutes a day.

Share Your Favorite Find

Hi, Aria

New moms often wonder if there is a better way to do things, so help her discover something fabulous she may not have come across on her own. Whether it's something you tried and loved or an ingenious new creation, the new mom will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Look for something that is as much for her as it is for the baby. A great choice is a nursing cardigan from Nesting Days. This lightweight cardigan looks like a typical sweater but has extra-long sides that not only drape to flatter any body type but also serve as a nursing cover or an easy way to provide an extra layer while holding a baby.

Or, give her an all-purpose bag that doesn't look like a baby bag so she can go seamlessly from the office to a playdate. The Everyday Tote from Peak Design is a unicorn bag that can pass as a stylish bag but has several sections to keep baby and mom gear organized, including a stretchy weather-resistant internal pocket. Plus, padded shoulder straps make this bag easier to carry than most traditional diaper bags.

Many new moms put a lot of thought into getting a big diaper bag, but after a few months they realize they need something smaller for quick trips or walks around the neighborhood. The answer is an original mini Hi, Aria diaper bag (above) that holds only the essentials and fits right in with the mini backpack trend.

Give a Better Place to Bond with Baby

Breeo

Having a baby means fewer nights out and more nights at home. Upgrade her nights and make her yard a magnet for friends and family by chipping in to get her a Breeo smokeless fire pit (above), which can be customized to fit her her yard and decor. This makes an especially thoughtful gift for fall and winter babies to help the new parents get out of the house even if they are not venturing far.

Brunch can also be challenging with a baby. Make it easy for the new parents to enjoy a restaurant-quality brunch at home anytime with a Maple Craft Foods pancake and waffle meal kit, which comes with mixes, gourmet syrups and coffee. There is enough to feed the parents a least a couple of meals or to help entertain friends who come to see the new baby.

Denied No More

Southern Caramel

Pregnancy comes along with a long list of things to avoid, from wine to sushi to soft cheese. Some moms add things they loved before conceiving, like coffee and sweets, to the list.

Indulge a new mom in everything she has missed the past nine months. Get her a gift box from Don Pablo coffee for when she needs a caffeine boost after a sleepless night with a newborn. For the mom who loves coffee but is cautious about having hot beverages around a newborn, make her day by getting her an Espro Cold Brew so she can get her daily caffeine fix worry-free.

Or, maybe she would prefer a box of homemade caramels from Southern Caramel (above) that are perfect for indulging her sweet tooth while nursing or holding a newborn.

If cheese is more her speed, give her a gift box from Wisconsin Cheese. Each of these also ensures that the new parents will have snacks to share when guests come by to see the new baby even if they haven't had time to shop.

Sending the new mom a bottle of wine or a sushi platter will also be a good reminder of what she missed during the long months of pregnancy.

Pamper Her

Nature by Canus

A new mom's body has been through a lot, and moms need a little TLC to feel like themselves again. Give her a gift certificate for a pedicure or massage. Better yet, plan a girls' afternoon and go with her! Or, give her everything she needs to pamper herself at home. A Nature by Canus Discovery Gift Set (above) contains luxuries a new nom will appreciate after a sleepless night or anytime she steals a few free moments for herself. This set contains a foaming milk bath, pure vegetal-base soap, lotion and body wash made with soothing goat milk.

Or, get her a giftset from Sallye Ander. Any new mom will appreciate the included Nourish Under Eye Treatment and face masks to help her cover up just how tired she actually is. Mom will also get a relaxing bar of lavender soap and a sea sponge loofah to help her make the most of the time she gets to linger in the shower.

Constantly changing diapers, feeding and cleaning means a lot of hand washing. Dionis product are all made with nourishing goat milk, which moisturizes deeply without harming baby's skin. Chose from hand lotion, body lotion, foot care or a gift box to help her recover and adjust to new motherhood with a little bit of luxury.

Meals Galore

Free-Photos via Pixabay

The irony of being ravenous after giving birth but not having any time to cook is not lost on new moms. Make the new family's life a little easier by delivering a meal. Even better, set up a meal train so friends and family can volunteer to drop off meals during the first weeks home with a newborn. Meals should not require preparation other than reheating but don't need to be elaborate. For this gift, it really is the thought that counts! Your meal doesn't need to be homemade, and delivery is fine!

Help for Hire

Life can seem manageable with a newborn...then all of a sudden, it's not. Maybe it's a change in nap schedule, returning to work or a lack of sleep that becomes unbearable or a toddler's resentment at no longer being the center of attention. Make sure mom is prepared with a gift certificate for a complete house cleaning, a few hours of babysitting or a laundry service. When she cashes in her gift, she will be thinking about much she appreciates that you thought of something so useful.

Helping Hands

Sometimes all a new mom wants is to drink a cup of coffee while it's still hot or take a shower that lasts more than two minutes. Help her out by offering to hold the baby while she leisurely enjoys a hot beverage, deep conditions her hair or takes a 20-minute power nap. This may be the gift she remembers the most!

Hang in There: 25 Things New Moms Need to Hear

8 Things New Moms Need Their Non-Mom Friends to Know

14 Thoughtful Gifts for New Moms & Moms-to-Be

A babymoon is the perfect way to relax and reconnect with your partner before having to tackle sleepless nights, diaper changes and bottles. While there is no one right way to babymoon, there are some things every mom-to-be should consider when planning a pre-baby getaway. Read on for tips on how to choose when and where to go and what to pack. Can’t travel? We have you covered with great ideas for babymoon staycations.

1. Choose the Right Time
Timing is key when it comes to planning a fun and relaxing babymoon. Most obstetricians think the best time to travel is between 14 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. This is the ideal time to plan a babymoon because the fatigue and nausea of the first trimester will have passed but the discomfort many moms-to-be experience in the third trimester will not have set in yet. Added bonus: Planning a trip for the second trimester will also give you something to look forward to when you're struggling through the worst of those early pregnancy symptoms.

2. Find the Perfect Destination
With months of sleepless nights ahead, you'll want a destination that offers plenty of opportunities to relax. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has plenty of advice about how to stay safe on cruise ships, airplanes and during international travel, so nearly everything is on the table for expectant moms. If you have any concerns about your health and your baby's, select a destination that is not more than a few hours from your doctor or a large hospital capable of handling pregnancy complications. Consider your pregnancy symptoms as well. Even if you loved cruising before becoming pregnant, if you tend to get nauseated on the water, you may want to avoid any activity that could cause sea sickness.

3. Set Your Budget
Babies are expensive! Before getting carried away with your vacation, think about how much you can realistically spend. If the answer you come up with is "not a lot," don't worry. You can have an amazing babymoon on a budget. Consider a babymoon staycation! Look for mid-week hotel specials in your town or find a spa that gives prenatal massages and book a couple's day there. Or, look to nearby towns that are an easy drive from where you live to keep costs down. If you already have a lot of baby necessities from an older sibling or can snag hand-me-downs, consider asking family and friends for donations toward a babymoon rather than creating a baby registry. Instead of receiving baby gear you don't need, you can request gift certificates for dinner at a restaurant on the beach, a night at a hotel or a prenatal massage in the on-site spa.

4. Get Your Doctor's Okay
Before any babymoon plans are booked, check with your OB or midwife to make sure your trip is medically approved. Then schedule a pre-trip checkup to make sure you and the baby are in good health before jetting off. Since this appointment will be close to your departure date, most of your vacation plans will be set. That means it's a good opportunity to ask any questions you have about your destination, such as whether certain local foods are safe to eat or how to avoid Zika virus. Get the okay for any location-specific activities, like rock climbing or long hikes. This appointment is also a good time to ask travel-related questions, such as how often you should get up to walk during a flight or where to place your seatbelt for a long car ride. Pro tip: Some airlines and cruise ships have restrictions on when pregnant women can travel, so you can ask your doctor for a letter confirming your week of pregnancy at this appointment.

5. Pack Wisely
Stick to the essentials when packing so you won't have a mountain of laundry to do when you get home. You also want to be comfortable and cute! A babymoon is the perfect opportunity to refresh your wardrobe and get some basics to take you through the rest of your pregnancy and postpartum. A cute pair of Allbirds slip-ons will help ensure you are able to walk around in comfort on your babymoon. As a bonus, you will have a great pair of shoes you can put on hands-free once your bebe arrives. You can also justify picking up some new clothes to fit your growing belly, like a lounge dress or stretchy leggings from KyteBaby.

6. Plan Some Quality Couples Time
A babymoon is a great chance to strengthen your relationship with your partner. Remember what brought you together and enjoy each other's company as a couple before life changes. Take some time to talk about what you are looking forward to and what you are worrying about. If you need some ideas, The Adventure Challenge: Couples Edition is a fun scratch-off book full of ideas to make sure you don't always have the same old date night while on your babymoon.

7. Babymoon at Home
Whether you have to stay close to home because you are on bed rest or because every extra penny is going to the baby, you can still have a great at-home babymoon. Treat your babymoon at home the same as you would if you were going out of town. Set an out-of-office auto-response for email and turn your ringer off. Plan to spend a long weekend (or more) doing nothing but pampering yourself, hanging with your main squeeze, eating all your favorite foods and binge-watching whatever you like. A long bath with candles and a weekend of lounging around can do wonders to help you reset and get ready for the next phase of pregnancy—and your baby!
