Between school, work, and keeping the family afloat, sometimes it’s tough for mother-daughter activities to come front and center. To help you keep that bond strong, we found 33 of the very best ideas. Whether your daughter is 5 or 15, keep reading to discover mother-daughter activities you’ve got to try at least once.
1. Play a game of basketball. Even if you aren’t the next Steph Curry—you can still shoot hoops with your daughter. Plus, it’s a great workout!
2. Have a spa day. Every mom and daughter deserves the royal treatment at least once. A soothing mask, manicure, pedicure, and refreshing cucumber water will make for a memorable day.
3. Write in a journal together. Sometimes talking about our feelings is tough. But using a mother-daughter journal to share our dreams and disappointments can be a great bonding experience (and a wonderful keepsake for the future).
4.Have a movie marathon. Pick a series of movies (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Disney), pop popcorn, and make a day of movies in your family room.
5. Go on a road trip. Nothing says togetherness like riding in a car for a long time. Create a playlist of music you both want, pick a destination, and start driving.
6. Set up and finish a jigsaw puzzle. A puzzle guarantees hours of quality time with your daughter.
7.Run a race. Whether it’s a 5k or a 1-mile fun run, train with your daughter and show her that girls can do anything!
9. Have regular mommy-daughter dates. Whether it’s a lunch date, a walk to the park, or visiting a local museum, you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to spend time with your daughter.
10. Pick a Pinterest project to tackle. You know all those crafts and projects you have pinned? Find a perfect one for a mother-daughter team and make an afternoon of it.
13. Go to high tea. Find a fancy hat and get your pinkies up. High tea is a luxurious activity every mom and daughter should do at least once.
14. Volunteer or do a community service project. There are a lot of community activities for families. Pick an activity that will help mom and daughter give back to others while spending time together.
15. Schedule a professional photoshoot. Most moms have hundreds of photos of their daughters, and we all love a good selfie. But having a photographer other than yourself capture lasting memories is a gift you'll enjoy well into the future. 22. Travel to a new city. You can take a plane ride to another state or drive to the next town. Explore a new city with your daughter, and see what interests both of you.
33. Have a good cry together. Showing your daughter that it's okay to express her feelings is important. And, it's important to show her that you're human, too.
24. Take a hike.Find a trail to explore. Wander through your local park. Stroll the beach, head up a mountain, or discover the desert. Enjoying nature together may open your eyes to many new things along the path.
25. Go on a shopping spree. While it's probably worth saving up some money for this indulgence, an afternoon shopping spree is something every mother and daughter should do together.
26. See a play or musical. Dress up, have lunch, and experience a play or musical at a local theater.
27. Take a painting class together. Get artsy and do a painting or crafting class together. You'll love seeing your unique perspectives come to life on the canvas.

There are strong family vibes in this blockbuster, and your kids will love the whimsically colorful, melodic story!

Yes Day Inspired by the beloved children's book by the same name, Allison and Carlos decide to give their three kids a "Yes Day," where there's no saying no to anything the kids ask for or to do (within reason). 13. Willow (1988) For today's Harry Potter generation, a viewing of Willow will surely be of interest. 26. Toy Story 1, 2, 3, 4 (1995 - 2019) Every kid will love the iconic warm-hearted tale of the secret life of toys. From the very first film to the fourth, which hit theaters in 2019, follow the saga of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and their fellow toys as they navigate the trials and tribulations of being Andy's toys. Each film is special in its own right.
27. Whale Rider (2003) Before Moana set out on the seas on a quest to save her village, a courageous girl named Pai did it first. The film is set in the Maori community of New Zealand, where modern culture threatens to quell ancient traditions. Twelve-year-old Pai sets out to prove that even though she is not the male heir her father wanted, she has the bravery, wisdom, and skill to lead. There are some adult themes (including a mother and child who die during childbirth, as well as some references to marijuana), but tweens and parents will appreciate the inspiring message.

The first movie to be directed by a Saudi Arabian woman, this story is of a spunky, independent 11-year-old girl who wants to ride a bike, wears Converse sneakers, and loves to compete against her (male) best friend. Beautifully done, the film explores topics such as religious traditions and laws, but it's also an incredible study of female empowerment. Follow along, and cheer for Wadjda as she fiercely makes a place for herself in the world.

While the slow parts may bore young children, and the presence of Nazi invaders might bring up questions, all and all, this is a fun classic film for families.

34. Mary Poppins Returns (2018) Julie Andrews fans can rest assured that this remake by Rob Marshall is an ode to the near-perfect original. Emily Blunt charms, Lin-Manuel Mirada shines, and the sequel plot means that viewers will see how Jane and Michael are faring some 20 years after Mary Poppins first came into their lives. Be on the lookout for a very special cameo from the one and only Dick Van Dyke!
35. How to Train Your Dragon(2010) Follow the adventures of the reluctant dragon-slayer Hiccup, who, after capturing the rarest dragon of all—the Night Fury—befriends it instead of killing it. Raucous adventures follow as Hiccup shows his fellow Vikings that not all dragons are dangerous. Note: Sensitive kids may be troubled by the initial scenes of violent dragons attacking the village.

Featuring a strong environmental message, it's a wonderful way to help show kids the value of a strong ecosystem. And, the music rocks, too.

65. My Neighbor Totoro (1988) Another masterpiece from Hayao Miyazaki, this family movie is appropriate for all ages. Two girl protagonists move to the countryside in 1950s Japan and are befriended by the magical creature, Totoro, who helps them when they have a problem related to their mother, who is dealing with a long-term illness.

66. Alice in Wonderland (1951) Everyone loves this classic tale of a little girl who falls asleep and gets whisked into a nonsense world where "Everyone is mad." Alice grows bigger and smaller and encounters all sorts of wild characters—some of which are mildly inappropriate (like the hookah-smoking caterpillar and a head-chopping queen), but all in all this tale of silliness is fun and engaging.

78. Akeela and the Bee (2006) A little girl from a tough neighborhood in LA learns she's got a knack for spelling—and that she doesn't need to change herself to fit in. Lawrence Fishburn stars as the spelling tutor who coaches her to the Scripps National Spelling Bee while teaching her to believe in herself. Note: The beginning shipwreck scene may be disturbing, even for adults, so feel free to skip to the island and go from there.

Look for the return of fan-favorite Edna, and fellow superhero Fro-Zone. Some violence might be scary for younger kids, but the all-around message of teamwork is a home run for families.

100. The Kid Who Would Be King(2019) This modern retelling of the legend of King Arthur has been described as a mixture of "Goonies" and "Lord of the Rings." The story follows a schoolboy who is chosen to save the world with the help of the mystical sword. It’s good to see that Gaston’s ego is still intact after all these years—and all the beatings he’s taken in various movies and shows. Hopefully, he’s ready for another one, because he’s obviously not going to take over the world without a fight. Ariel, Snow White, Tiana, Rapunzel, and Moana are ready to come to King Triton’s rescue. These princesses no longer need rescuing—they are the rescuers. Snow White even has an axe now, for some reason? Hey, we support it. The trailer shows them banding together on an epic journey, and it promises all the girl power we’re been craving.

Here are some of the most kid-friendly Marvel movies out there
With dozens of films making up the beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe, superhero flicks are a popular choice for family movie nights. With kids clamoring to see their faves—whether that’s Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Panther, or Captain Marvel—parents sometimes need to make a tough call about what exactly are the most kid-friendly Marvel movies. With none of the films rated lower than PG-13, moms and dads have to figure out what their little fans are old enough to understand and be exposed to. To make that decision a little easier, we’re breaking down which films are more likely to be OK for younger viewers, and what to know before watching.
Captain America’s first foray into the MCU does have some slightly scary elements—including pretty much anytime Red Skull is on screen—but this flick is about as wholesome as Marvel gets. That’s mostly thanks to Cap himself— a genuinely good guy who just wants to save the world after a top-secret serum changes him from a scrawny kid from Brooklyn to a super-soldier with a ripped physique.
The first time the whole squad comes together to fight an alien threat is one of the most exciting moments in MCU history, so this one’s a must-watch for any major Marvel fan. The over-the-top action is mostly shown through massive blasts and explosions that leave New York City in rubble, but the movie is relatively light on actual blood and gore. Just be prepared for a joking reference to marijuana between Tony Stark and the Hulk.
Some of the more recent installments in the MCU have taken on some heavy topics, but 2015’s Ant-Man is often described as being on the lighter side, with tons of laughs throughout. Of course, there are plenty of action and fight scenes, but most likely nothing graphic enough to scare little ones away, which is it’s on our list of best Marvel movies for kids.
There’s more science than swear words in this 2018 sequel. Much like the first film, it’s heavy on humor and thankfully light on graphic violence. If your kiddos just can’t get enough of Scott Lang, he’ll be back for a third turn next year in the forthcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Like any Marvel movie, Thor features some violence and fighting. But there are lots of laughs to balance it out, and it’s surprisingly light on profanity. It’s especially fun watching the golden-haired superhero learn about “normal” human things—like drinking a cup of coffee. There’s a little romance, too, thanks to Natalie Portman’s Jane, but nothing inappropriate for kids.
Thor’s absolutely awful sister (the appropriately named Hel) might be too scary for younger viewers, but older kids will likely love Thor: Ragnarok—especially the hilarious scene-stealer Korg, voiced by director Taika Waititi. It’s also another great look at the relationship between Thor and his sneaky brother Loki.
Captain Marvel is practically the definition of girl power. As fun and important as it is for little ones to see a female-centered superhero movie for the first time in the MCU, this one’s another flick that might be best for slightly older kids. Some of those extraterrestrial fight scenes might be a little spooky for young ones.
This light-hearted romp through space is a decent choice for kids, but you may want to warn them not to repeat some of the more colorful language afterward. And don’t let that cute little raccoon fool you—he’s one of the worst offenders. Parents may also want to guide kids through the sad opening scene, which features Peter Quill’s mother dying from cancer.
Peter Parker is the youngest member of the Avengers squad, by a lot. Kids will get a kick out of watching Spider-Man balance fighting crime with being a not-so-average high schooler, and thankfully, parents will find the movie largely free of gratuitous gore and profanity. A heads up, however, that there is one joke alluding to pornography that may make this one a no-go for some families.
Fair warning: Black Panther does feature some bloody flight scenes and graphic violence, so this one may be for older kids only. But Chadwick Boseman’s turn as an African prince turned Avenger was a milestone for the MCU—the first movie led by a Black superhero, with a majority black cast, and even a black director. It was not only a box office and critical success but also an inspiration to millions of children of color who got to imagine themselves in a starring role for the first time. That’s worth a watch.
Okay, so this movie isn’t coming out until November 2023. But since it features the first all-female trio of superheroes, one of which is a tween, we’re pretty positive this latest edition to the MCU will be one of the most kid-friendly Marvel movies to come along in a while. If you’re wondering what happens when Carol Danvers, Captain Monica Rambeau, and tween Kamala Khan manage to get their powers mixed up, the new trailer might give you an idea.

It’s this curse that she journeys to undo. But beyond the action, themes exploring the complex mother-daughter relationship and the need to be unapologetically oneself heighten the narrative, offering viewers a heroine who’s fearless and fearlessly independent.
She may be only five years old, but she’s proof that even pint-sized forces can move mountains. Matilda, the story of an oddball with telekinetic powers and a conviction for standing up for what’s right, gets the screen treatment with a magical adaptation directed by its narrator, Danny DeVito. Mara Wilson stars as the titled hero and does Roald Dahl’s classic tale justice with an exuberant spirit that continues to shape childhoods and inspire little girls and every kid who wants to stand tall.
The ’90s enjoyed a league of top-tier insta-classics from Walt Disney Studios, including The Lion King, Toy Story, and Beauty and the Beast. Also around this time, a young woman named Fa Mulan took to the big screen. A maiden with serious sword skills, Fa disguises herself as a man to join the Imperial Army in place of her father, an injured war veteran. Selfless and heroic, she became one of the studio’s most celebrated heroines while reminding the world that true courage is gender blind.
“True love’s kiss” isn’t even an afterthought in this sea-faring tale about a girl, the ocean, and her will to brave uncharted waters. Paying homage to Polynesian culture and history, the film borrows its name from its titular heroine, who recruits a muscle-bound demigod to help her complete a mission that will save her island. Complete with a serenading soundtrack from Lin-Manuel Miranda, this tropical adventure is as enchanting as it is empowering.
Audiences had no idea what they were in for when they bought tickets to this wintry wonderland of Nordic folklore. Adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, this charmer flips the script on the traditional fairy tale, instead offering a story about the power of sisterhood. Blazing this new trail for Disney princesses are Anna and Elsa, siblings who eventually scoff at the idea of Prince Charming (and his kiss), embracing self-discovery, acceptance, and family bonds in his place.
Mirabel isn’t gifted. That is what her family—loving though misguided—would have her believe. Part of the vibrant Madrigals, a Colombian brood living within the walls of an enchanted casa, our bespectacled teen protagonist is the only one without a superpower of some sort. That is until her household shows signs of cracking, and our crafty little wiz gets to the core of why. We’ll spoil nothing more here but will say Encanto is full of strong female characters attesting that there’s power in one’s true colors.
No matter which adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s seminal novel you stream—(love the 1994 version, partial to Greta Gerwig’s innovative 2019 take)—this gold mine of strong female character arcs, gender defiance, and unbreakable kinship is rich with girl power. The story belongs to the March sisters, Jo—the spirited and fiercely passionate creative whose ambitions shatter tradition—in particular. But each sister is her own force, etching her own story with her own voice and her own pen.
Tasked with saving Kumandra, a fantasy world composed of five lands that were once unified in their love for divine dragons but are now divided by dark sinister forces, Raya sets out to track down Sisu, the last dragon needed to restore order (spoiler alert: Sisu’s also female). And even though the action goes down in a mythical realm of make-believe, the core message at play is very real: To be trusted, one must also trust.
Remember when anime classics dominated cartoon lineups in the good old days? Think Belle & Sebastian, Speed Racer, Pokémon, and Dragon Ball Z—good stuff but male-dominated. Okay, so we know the title character of this superhero series is a boy. But anyone who’s watched even just one episode of this cosmic adventure knows it’s radiating with girl power. We’re talking about the Crystal Gems—Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl—the alien warriors keeping Beach City safe and teaching their little sidekick along the way. As for Steven, he’s half-Gem, half-human, inheriting his powers from his mother, Rose Quartz, the leader of the Crystal Gems, who has a beautiful story to tell.
In 1984, we were introduced to an eight-year-old Punky Brewster squatting in an abandoned apartment in Chicago with no parents and no peers, just a dog named Brandon. Over the next four seasons, our favorite spunky rebel would challenge stereotypes and conformity while marching to the beat of her own drum and setting her own sartorial trends. Should you feel so inclined, the Punky reboot does a decent job of tackling topics of the modern age, like sexuality and gender identity.
In the ’90s, Carmen Sandiego was a vehicle for virtual globe-trotting and sharpening one’s geography skills. But with Netflix’s glossy reimagination, the Latina super-thief who always dons a red coat and hat gets the origin story she deserves. Voiced by Gina Rodriguez and fierce in her femme-ness, Carmen vows to take down the evil academy that raised her. This series is so well-rounded and scripted that even the teens, tweens, and adults in the room will look forward to Carmen’s next thrilling caper.
Black women are given their flowers in Disney’s original Proud Family and its reboot, Louder and Prouder. Not only are strong Black women behind both the voices of the series and the legendary cameos (Raven Symone, Solange Knowles, Sheryl Lee Ralph), but female representation on the screen is championed all the way from teen protag Penny, a magnet for misadventure, to Tae-Bo-loving Suga Mama, the madcap matriarch. It’s a vibrant celebration of culture with strong female characters that will never lose its shine.
Notorious fourth-wall breaker, Dora is an adorable Hispanic pioneer who, with the help of her monkey named Boots, a backpack with personality, and an all-knowing map that can carry a tune, teaches mini viewers the 123s of problem solving. The show itself is interactive, with Dora encouraging preschooler participation, and so is its impact, universalizing bilingualism and empowering preschoolers to be beacons of possibility.

One of the most celebrated shows furthering representation for LGBTQ+ audiences, this new She-Ra pays homage to the ’80s original while furthering the legacies of its female warriors.
A tonic for dark times, this soul-soothing series about the adventures of a purple unicorn named Twilight Sparkle and her pony friends bucked stereotypes for nine seasons over 11 years. During Covid, she created a home studio that doubled as a kindergarten classroom. Running an architecture firm from home while simultaneously homeschooling isn’t for the faint of heart. Midnight Circus in the Parks
Midnight Circus in the Parks Julie (Greenberg) Jenkins is one-half of the husband and wife team that created Midnight Circus in the Parks, a traveling circus show that performs under a big top in Chicago Parks every fall. They've raised over $900,000 for Chicago Public Parks to build play lots, provide new equipment and subsidize special programs for neighborhood parks.
Frog Temple Pilates Randi Whitman was a professional dancer in her 20’s when she ruptured a disc in her spine. While trying to mend herself without surgery, she discovered pilates. Today Whitman teaches her clients how to strengthen their bodies as “a whole picture, vs. pieces and parts”, via Pilates, a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. We figured there’s no better time to celebrate a few of these inspiring leaders and innovators than during Women’s History Month. So gather your go-get-’em kids, and get to know these unbelievable women who have made their mark on Seattle throughout the years.
Dr. Gabriela Chavarria

Just this month, the Burke Museum welcomed a new Executive Director, Dr. Gabriela Chavarria. Born in Mexico City, this leader in the field of natural sciences got her start at an early age. She studied biology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and then went on to Harvard where she earned her PhD in organismic and evolutionary biology. One of the things that drew Chavarria to the Burke is the way the museum showcases its collections, inviting visitors to take a look behind the scenes. As she takes the helm, Chavarria hopes to expand this Inside-Out approach, engaging more people in the important work going on at the Burke. In fact, you may just see Chavarria sharing her own research and work about native pollinators and the importance of bees and landscapes in the coming weeks. A great reason to buzz on over to this area favorite.
Future filmmakers can turn their lens to Tracy Rector, a self-described "mixed race filmmaker, curator and community organizer." Rector is the co-founder of Longhouse Media, a non-profit Indigenous media arts organization based in Seattle that nurtures and showcases Native artists and has been celebrated for its youth program, Native Lens. It's possible you've seen her work on Independent Lens, ImagineNative or National Geographic. Her talents have been tapped by the likes of SAM, where Rector served as a curriculum advisor, helping to expand the museum's Native American wing.
The written word has unspeakable power. Ijeoma Oluo, a Nigerian-American writer and editor, who was named one of the most influential women in Seattle, gives a voice to issues such as racism, misogynoir, harassment, feminism and social justice. She started out in tech and marketing, but then turned towards blogging and subsequently writing her best-seller, So You Want To Talk About Race, that was released in 2018. It was met with rave reviews and has become a significant guidebook for conversations around American racism. As one of Seattle’s most well known conversationalists about race issues and the invisibility of Black women’s voices, Oluo is here to fight for these important issues and have wit when she does.
Our city’s grandaddy, Chief Seattle, along with Doc Maynard, paved the way for the birth of our town through their peaceful friendship and support of each other. Chief Seattle’s oldest daughter, Kikisoblu (a.k.a Princess Angeline) kept that legacy alive for years when she remained in Seattle, even when her beloved Duwamish people were treaty-forced onto reservations. She stayed in her home near what's now Pike Place Market and became a mainstay around the city. Streets around the area are named after her, as is a shelter for the YWCA that provides support for women experiencing homelessness. She was the last direct descendant of Chief Seattle and is known for her kindness, acceptance and friendship with the early settlers who built up the city.

This lady is out of this world. Literally! Bonnie Dunbar, aerospace engineer and retired NASA astronaut, flew on five Space Shuttle missions in the '80s and '90s. She has logged more than 1,208 hours, or 50-plus days, in space. Following her formal education at the University of Washington, and her first stint at Boeing, Dunbar became a flight controller at NASA and finally an astronaut in 1981. On her space missions, she served as mission specialist and Payload Commander, and has since proved that any little girl has the power to break through that aeronautic glass ceiling if she puts her mind to it. Dunbar also served our community as the President and CEO of The Museum of Flight until April 2010. If anyone has wings to soar, it's Bonnie.
This adventurous lady was not only the first female mayor of Seattle, but also the first female mayor of a major American city. She served on the Seattle City Council in 1922 (she and Katheryn Miracle were the first women ever elected to the council), became council president in 1924 and mayor in 1926. Landes was highly active in women’s organizations including the Women’s Century Club, the Women’s University Club and the League of Women Voters. She also served as madame president of the Seattle Federation of Women’s Clubs, representing thousands of women, and even launched a conference that helped establish Seattle as a sophisticated, modern metropolis. During her mayoral term, she appointed experienced professionals to head up city departments, improved public transportation and parks and put the city's finances in order. The Seattle Opera House is one of her many accomplishments.
Sue Bird, our very own Israeli-American basketball player for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm, is certainly a b-baller force to be reckoned with, a mighty Miss amping up the level of women’s sports. Bird was first drafted by the Storm in 2002 as the overall draft pick and has since won four WNBA championships, four Olympic gold medals, two NCAA championships and four FIBA World Cups. She is only one of 11 women to ever attain all four accolades. She has also been honored as one of the WNBA’s top 15 players of all time. In fact, she is the first player in all of WNBA history to win championships in three different decades. She reminds all the little ladies out there to not fade away from the hoop dreams.
Can you imagine climbing Mt. Rainier? Now, imagine climbing Mt. Everest. It’s quite the unbelievable feat that only a tiny percentage of people will ever do successfully. Unless you are Melissa Arnot and have climbed Everest no less than six times. As a young climber, she first climbed Mt. Rainier in 2001, only later to become a guide in 2004 and a lead guide in 2006. After years of honing her skills, and a few thwarted attempts at climbing the world’s tallest mountain, she became the first American woman to summit and survive the decent of Mt. Everest without supplemental oxygen. She is currently sponsored by Eddie Bauer and is a participant in the development of their First Ascent brand. She has not only made herself an international climbing expert, but a savvy businesswoman and contributor for this popular Seattle-based outdoor gear company.
We all know how important it was to fight for educational equality, so who better to mention than Thelma Dewitty, the first African American educator ever hired by the Seattle Public School system. In 1947, Dewitty started at Cooper Elementary. Although there was one request for a different teacher, she ultimately won over all her students and their parents. Throughout her prolific career, Dewitty worked at numerous Seattle schools, where she fought against strict school traditions and carved the road for her future African American and women colleagues to follow. Dewitty also worked with the NAACP, the Washington State Board Against Discrimination and the Board of Theater Supervisors for Seattle and King County.
We can’t talk about progress of the education system without mentioning Ana Mari Cause. She is an American psychologist, college administrator and the current president of the University of Washington. Born in Havana, Cuba, she relocated to Miami, Florida and then to the Seattle area in 1986. She has grown from being an Assistant Professor to become the first permanent woman president of the institution, as well as the first gay and ethnic minority president at the university. Prior to her appointment as president in 2015, she served as the chair of the American Ethnic Studies Department, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and helped launch The Husky Promise, a tuition-funding initiative at UW. What a testament to barrier breaking if we ever had one.
Pike Place Market is the quintessential place to visit in Seattle for locals and visitors alike. As we all know, there are a few places that garner a bit more attention than others, recognizable by the long lines that extend out of the door at all hours of the day. One of those places that people just can’t get enough of is the nationally renowned Piroshky Piroshky bakery. A mainstay at the historic market since 1992, Olga Sagan (sole owner since 2017) has been offering hand-made savory and sweet pastry pies ever since. As an immigrant from Russia, she had to overcome a handful of obstacles, but her determination and her pastry prowess has built a Seattle bakery dynasty. Now with four locations, a food truck and relationships with other well-known Seattle foodie operations, she is on a path to take over the city, one pie at a time.
One of our favorite locals, Megan Rapinoe has catapulted women’s sports into a whole new sphere. Rapinoe is a professional soccer player who currently captains the OL Reign as well as the US National Team. She is a gold medalist in the 2012 London Summer Olympics, the 2015 FIFA’s Women’s World Cup and the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and finished second in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She is well known for her play and her activism in many LGBTQ+ and BLM issues. In the past, she has also played with the Seattle Sounders Women in 2012 in preparation for the Olympics. Attendance of those games skyrocketed during her time there. She signed with OL Reign in 2013 and quickly became their leading scorer, garnered her first professional hat trick and was recognized as a Reign FC Legend in September 2019, solidifying herself as a femme footballer and powerhouse who has made her name in not only Seattle sports but women’s sports the world over.
If there was the perfect voice for our city’s International District, it would come straight from Maiko Winkler-Chin. Winkler-Chin is the Executive Director at the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority. She has been instrumental in keeping up the vibrancy and the ethnicity of this unique area. Chin brings in over 20 years of experience in the community economic development arena and aims to find areas of business growth and revitalization to the ID. Her goals include bringing in business that fits with the cultural character of the area, making sure community members are hired in new positions and influencing projects that may otherwise overtake small shops and local homes. She has also recently been appointed to the Mayor’s task force to help set up a plan for a $100 million set of investments allocated for communities of color.
Without Mary-Claire King, we might not have the insight into the intricacies of breast cancer and its susceptibility that we have now. King, an American geneticist, was the very first to show that breast cancer can be inherited in some families due to mutations in the BRCA1 gene. If it wasn’t for her and her team’s efforts and research on linkage analysis to prove the existence of this major gene, the race to finally clone the BCRA1 gene (used to repair mutations) would never have happened. Currently, King's primary focus includes breast cancer, ovarian cancer and schizophrenia; she is also interested in discovering genes that cause common disorders. It’s no wonder she is recognized as one of the 50 most important women in science.
