Let’s face it, keeping teens entertained throughout an entire family vacation is easier said than done–and should be an Olympic sport if you ask us! While they’d much prefer spending time with friends or glued to TikTok, getting together as a group without the usual daily distractions makes for wonderful memories.

Enter Destin-Fort Walton Beach. A stunning destination located along the Florida panhandle that’s known for its sugar-white sand beaches and crystal Gulf waters. Not only does it feel like you’re on an island, but it offers plenty of adventure too.

To help you plan an unforgettable trip that your 13 going on 30 will actually enjoy, we’ve compiled a surefire list of activities that’ll remove “I’m bored” from their vocabulary.

Scuba Diving

Sure, swimming in the ocean is fun but it doesn’t compare to witnessing the beauty of what lies beneath. With an introductory course to scuba diving in Destin-Fort Walton Beach, your kids over age 10 can learn the basics of exploring the wonders of the ocean and leave with a new skill.

They’ll be able to try on diving equipment and can take their first shallow dive in calm waters near the Destin Jetties. For parents looking to make this a regular excursion, the course counts as an open water dive towards getting scuba certified, so they can continue on with their newfound passion.

Ready, set, scuba dive into this adventure!

eFoil Lessons

Step aside paddleboards, kayaks and canoes, eFoils are here! The electric-powered hydrofoil surfboards can go up to 25 mph, allowing the daredevils in your family to roam the ocean water. eFoils are also steered with a wireless hand controller that turns off when a rider loses their balance, so you don’t have to worry about anyone getting hurt.

Lessons are available for teens age 13 and up, which can be booked from March through October. Don’t forget to bring a waterproof camera for some Instagram-worthy photos.

Schedule an epic eFoil lesson now!

Kayaking at Spectre Island

Tucked away in Santa Rosa Sound, Spectre Island is a pristine, white sandy beach that serves as home to many different species of birds and sea creatures. Your older children can explore the undeveloped island and surrounding turquoise waters in a single or double kayak where they may catch a glimpse of dolphins, bald eagles and osprey to name a few.

Whether they’re a beginner or a pro kayaker, they’ll love the breathtaking views and challenge of navigating on their own.

Yippie kayak–check out these rental options!

Charter Fishing

Charter Fishing offers not only the chance to reel in the catch of a lifetime, but also quite the scenery with amazing views and the potential for dolphin sightings. Book a half or full-day private charter where your first-timers will have the chance to fish the Gulf–and take home their catch.

Receive one-on-one instruction with the boat captain and first mate, who’ll ensure everyone in the family reels in a prize. At the end of your trip, bring your catch to a local restaurant to have it grilled, blackened or fried for dinner.

Schedule your fishing excursion today!

Surf Lessons

Remember the sheer excitement your once-little experienced riding a wave with just their tiny body? Now you can see that sparkle in their eyes again with a surf lesson that’s certain to give them an adrenaline rush.

Head to Destin-Fort Walton Beach for manageable waves that your beginner surfer can tackle–and that won’t end in a wipe-out! With a personal instructor, your teen will learn a variety of skills, from standing up on a surfboard and maintaining balance to making surf wax their best friend. All supplies are included, just make sure to pack towels, sunscreen and snacks.

Take the stress out of the holiday this year at a local restaurant serving the best Thanksgiving dinner in Portland

Thanksgiving. It’s a holiday filled with food, family, drink, and pleasure. With a side of complete kitchen destruction and a sink full of dishes. Don’t get us wrong, that can be a fun piece of the party too. But if this year, all that clean up feels like a little much, don’t fret—these Portland restaurants are making it easy for families (but a few extra tips always help). They’re serving up the best Thanksgiving dinner in Portland so you and the kids can focus on what matters most during this time of year—each other.

These Portland restaurants are open on Thanksgiving (and they’re family-friendly too)

1. Bullard Tavern

Situated in downtown Portland inside the Woodlark Hotel, the Bullard Tavern prides itself on its ability to bring Texas hospitality to Oregon’s wide variety of dining options. Perhaps you’d like to visit the restaurant in person on Thanksgiving this year? It's as easy as making a reservation through Tock, and then sitting down to all your favorite Thanksgiving staples (the restaurant is open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m.) served a la carte. Hint: The Thanksgiving Plate is stacked with traditional faves. Or perhaps you’d like to swing by and grab a meal to-go so you can eat in the comfort of your own home? You can do that at Bullard Tavern too. Be sure to place your order for the family dinner box (serves 3-4) soon and schedule your pick-up for November 23. Our tip? Don't forget to add a dessert to your order when you do.

2. 23Hoyt

Sophisticated and contemporary, you can expect a thoughtfully curated Thanksgiving buffet at this Portland restaurant. While there will definitely be turkey (butter and herb roasted free-range, organic) on the table, families will also find some Spanish-Mediterranean influenced dishes there too. Maple Glazed Garnet Yams and Sautéed French Beans are a sampling of the sides. And mini tarts and yogurt strudel finish up the meal. Make reservations to enjoy this no-work dinner (for you anyway) between 1 and 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

3. Urban Farmer

Urban Farmer is a modern steakhouse located in the heart of downtown Portland. Inside the Nines Hotel, this class A restaurant offers high quality meals made from locally sourced produce and fresh butcher cuts. Did we mention that the restaurant is situated in the 8th floor atrium? But the view is not the only thing you and the kids can enjoy at this restaurant that will be open on Thanksgiving from noon to 9 p.m. Salad and flatbread start things off before the first course. Then choose from salmon, ham, NY strip, or honey and thyme roasted turkey breast for the main course. They have a veg option too. Sides and desserts mirror traditional favorites with a few unexpected twists. You'll need reservations to dine here.

When you’re looking for a weekend getaway that’s a level up from tent camping, these are the best book-worthy spots in CA

Got a hankering to leave city life and go camping nearby, but not convinced that braving the elements and setting up your own sleeping quarters with just a piece of nylon between you and whatever wanders around outside is your idea of fun? Let us introduce you to the good old yurt. “What’s a yurt?” you ask? Well, unlike pitch-a-tent camping, yurts are already constructed structures, adorably, in the round. Yurt means “home” in Mongolian so for those that don’t want to give up some creature comforts (like a good set of walls and an off-the-floor bed) but also want to feel at one with the great outdoors (whether it’s beach camping or perhaps a touch of a luxe campsite), this could be the camping answer you’ve been looking for.

Cachuma Lake Yurts

You'll relax at the lake and roast marshmallows at your very own fire ring while little glampers will have fun at the playground and the swimming pool during the summer months. Add to that, there are guided nature walks, guided lake cruises, and junior ranger programs the kids can join.

Good to Know: The yurts named Lupine, Poppy, and Sage are on the western side of the campground and get a spectacular sunset on most evenings. Oak, Sycamore, Pine, and Redwood (ADA) are on the eastern side and get a beautiful morning sunrise over the lake and boating marina. PS: There's also a country store in case you need any essentials.

Yurt Features: Depending on the yurt, these yurts sleep 3-to-6 people. Expect to find indoor lighting, heating and screened windows. Outside you'll find a deck, picnic table (some are inside), that previously mentioned fire ring, a charcoal bbq and water spigot. Restrooms and showers are located close by while a portable lavatory is located adjacent to some yurts for convenience.

El Capitan Canyon

Camping is downright easy with this adventure yurt at El Capitan. We aren't sure if the best part is the domed skylight for easy stargazing at night or the multitude of deer, birds, trees and other nature-like things that surround you during your stay. Make sure to carve time out for the 30-minute hike to the beach or a walk to feed the llamas and the goats.

Good to Know: There's a heated swimming pool, along with a playground with a slide, swings and jungle gym adjacent to the pool. And for parents? There is an espresso bar as well as local wine and beer in the Canyon Market.

Yurt Features: Includes a queen bed and a twin day bed with twin trundle, bar-sized refrigerator, microwave, ceiling fan and space heater. Adjacent restroom facilities include private shower stalls with attached changing rooms. All yurts include a private picnic table and firepit with grill.

Santa Margarita KOA

Located halfway between LA and SF (and makes a great pitstop if you're making the roadtrip between the two), this yurt, on 70 acres in the central coast, is an outdoor enthusiasts dream—whether you and your family are into hiking, fishing, boating, bird watching, horseback riding, cycling, horseshoes, swimming, or any number of other outdoor activities, there's (literally) something for everyone. And if just making it to the yurt is the adventure, there's plenty to entertain the kids onsite: There's a giant jumping pillow and the unheated pool is open May through Oct. Make sure to say hi to Kevin, the resident emu who loves being fed.

Good to Know: This spot is located within an hour drive of Hearst Castle, Cambria, Ocean Dunes, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, local wineries, and Pozo National Forest.

Yurt Features: This 20-foot, yurt comes with a queen bed, two full futons and two twin beds. There isn't a bathroom or kitchen inside and you need to bring your own linens. Fire pit and picnic table are located out front.

Purty Yurty

Located on 5-acres of land in Joshua Tree, expect a star-studded stargazing experience thanks to vast skies and little-to-no light pollution. This is a rustic experience so bring plenty of food and even more water.

Good to Know: Joshua Tree National Park is 20 minutes away and is a bucket-worthy spot for hikes for the half-pints.

Yurt Features: Sleeps up to four guests. There's no kitchen, the restroom is a porta potty, there's a shower stall with solar shower (bag of water heated by the sun) along with battery and solar-powered lamps. Additionally, there is a solar panel which charges battery packs and you can use them to charge phones and small devices but no more than 110V. If you need a power for anything else, this listing is not suitable. Bring prepared food and plenty of drinking water.

The Cazador Yurt

Airbnb

Nestled among 30 fruit trees on a half-acre lot, this yurt exemplifies classic bohemian California living. There are several hammocks hung around the yard, a firepit as well as fruit trees that you're welcome to help yourself to.

Yurt Features: This yurt is 16 feet in diameter and has a conical roof with a skylight directly over the bed. It sleeps four, with one queen bed, one single bed and an air mattress. Included is internet access, a toaster oven, coffee, and mini-fridge. There's an outdoor bathroom with a toilet, sink and an outdoor shower with a tankless water heater that allows infinitely long hot showers.

A glamping bohemian yurt in the neighborhood of Paradise Hill (a 10-minute drive from DTLA). Families will dig this yurt's location on an urban farm where you can visit (and help feed if you wish!) goats, chickens, and a pig next door.

Good to Know: There are steps, so for toddlers, this location may be a challenge.

Yurt Features: This 20-foot yurt comes with a king bed and two single mattresses. A full outside kitchen, hanging chair the kids will love, wifi, an indoor fireplace, a solar-powered clawfoot garden bathtub, plus a coffee maker, microwave and refrigerator and a bbq grill outside.

Owen Beach
Owen Beach has long been one of the South Sound’s best beaches, but it recently got a makeover, so it’s better than ever. Plan to visit this month to check out the beach’s new pavilion, climbable whale structure, improved beachfront walking trails and bike paths when you’re in the area. As for what hasn’t changed? Families can still watch the ferries cross from Tacoma to Vashon; hike miles of trails that lead to one beautiful water view after another; or catch sight of the elusive orcas that love to frequent this area. It’s easy to see why this new and improved beach is one of our favorites.

Insider tip: Plan to spend the day at this Tacoma-area fave. All you need is a stocked cooler, a sun tent and beach toys a-plenty to make the most of a sunny day at Owen Beach. And if your Little still has energy to burn after beachin’ it all morning long, stop in and say hi to the animals at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, just up the road. Day planned!

Titlow Beach

Beyond some of the best low tide beach walks around, families will love this South Sound beach that looks toward Gig Harbor and the Narrows Bridge. You’ll need to park the car and walk a bit to find the sandy and rocky shores, but once you do, set out your beach blanket and enjoy. Train lovers of all ages will enjoy watching the trains that pass nearby, and if you need a chance of pace, hiking trails wind along the shore here. One of its other perks is a nearby playground and splash pad, and some fantastic food with a view (Boathouse 19 is just down the road). Stay and play all day at this South Sound beach.

Saltwater State Park
The casual atmosphere at Saltwater State Park makes it a prime spot for lazy afternoon picnics with your crew. After you’ve had your fill, spend time climbing around on the playground and then hit this shore at low tide to spend some Q.T. with the abundance of wildlife that can be found here. Mini crabs, anemones and little fish dart around in the shallows, waiting for your Little to discover them. The hiking trails here are easy for the tot lot, and are a great spot to find shade when the sun is high in the sky. Plus, during the summer, you can catch the salmon running up McSorley Creek, which runs adjacent to the campground. Sounds like a picture perfect day!

Dash Point State Park
The sandy beach at Dash Point State Park is a prime spot for little athletes to try out their skim boarding skills, or watch others give it a try! There’s plenty of space to ride the shallows without getting hung up on rocks or running into driftwood in your path here. But this beach is more than just a skim boarder heaven. The sandy shallows are where all the cool diapered babes splash and play in the South Sound. And the spectacular view has “beachside meal” written all over it. If you’re feeling super adventurous, pack your fishing gear and see what you can catch at high tide from the fishing pier. Then, grill your catch while you’re there to cap off a memorable summer day.

Penrose Point State Park
Bring your shovels and rakes to Penrose Point State Park on the Key Peninsula and dig for your dinner. It’s not quite as easy as picking up clams at Pike Street Market, but almost. All season long, clams and oysters are planted along the beachfront so families can enjoy the fruits of their labor come spring. There are plenty of BBQ’s and picnic tables to grill up your finds, or bring your own food to enjoy while taking in the view of the Kitsap Peninsula on the opposite side. Make sure you save enough energy to search for the secret lagoon with your mini-me (hint: you’ll find it on well-marked offshoot of the Penrose Point Trail). Then keep hiking to the trail’s end. When you arrive, don’t be surprised if you’re the only ones on the beach. It’s usually a quiet place to explore with your crew!

Sandy and swimmable are two words that sum up the vibe at Tolmie State Park. Once you get parked and make your way down to the beach, you’ll see why. The protected cove-like area means plenty of sandbar goodness for little swimmers to use. And the clean shoreline is hard to beat if your kidlet loves to dig and build. Add in parent visibility and you’ve got a relaxed day at the beach that’s easy to manage. And if you need a sun break, Tolmie’s three miles of shaded trails should do the trick. But Tolmie’s coolest feature is one you probably won’t even get to see… an underwater artificial reef set up especially for scuba divers. That’s what we call something to look forward to!

Redondo Beach
This popular Des Moines destination is the prefect half-day adventure for the tot lot. Hit it in the morning and they’ll be tuckered out just in time for their afternoon nap. Or head out post-nap for a late afternoon adventure that ends with dinner at Salty’s at Redondo Beach. Either way it’s a win! And the sandy beach is only half of it. Beyond the typical sundrenched shores that were made for digging and sandcastle building, there’s also a Marine Science and Technology Center at the north end of the beach. Schedule your beach trip around their limited summer hours (Sat., 10 a.m.-2 p.m. & Thurs. 4 p.m.-7 p.m.) if you want to add some touch tank and educational talk time to your outing.

Kopachuck State Park
There’s plenty to do and see at this small state park on Gig Harbor’s western side. A rocky shore is all you’ll find at high tide, but once the waters recede, it’s time to explore! Tide pools and stacks of purple sand dollars will keep your budding marine biologist busy for hours along the beach. And natural clay deposits along the forested border are an added bonus for kiddos who are keen to find new building material for their sandcastle creations. This is also one spot on the peninsula where swimming or floating around in the shallows will help to keep everyone cool on a hot summer day. And when you’ve had your fill, find more adventures in town, no matter what the weather’s got in store.

The grill is your go-to summer cooking tool, but it’s easy to get stuck in a rut of burgers and steaks. When you’re ready to switch up your dinner menu, you’ll want to check out our roundup of easy grilling recipes. From sweet and sour grilled chicken to skewers and even grilled fruit, these recipes are sure to spice up your spread. Read on to get fired up about all of the delicious possibilities.

Grilled Chicken Recipe

One of the easiest things to grill in the summer is chicken. With endless possibilities, there’s a style and flavor for everyone. We can’t wait to try this Sweet & Sour Chicken version. You can find the recipe in the post below!

Corn on the Cob

What goes better with grilled chicken than corn on the cob? A staple for summer dinners, make some with butter and salt for the kids, and add elote seasoning, spicy mayo or just about anything else you can think of for the adults.

Grilled Zucchini Salad

If you’ve got kids who like to keep it simple, set aside a few pieces of zucchini for them to have plain, while the rest can be tossed into this simple summer salad recipe.

Veggie Beef Tin Foil Packets

Campfire food can be made at home too. Foil packets are genius because there’s literally no cleanup and you can add just about anything you want to the mix. The post below has the recipe for this particularly yummy-looking dinner.

Grilled Sweet Potato

Better than french fries (we think), grilled sweet potatoes are a cinch to prep (see the post for details), and after you’ve lathered them in olive oil and salt, they only take about 4-5 minutes on each side before they’re done.

Lions and tigers and… cars? If seeing the zoo on foot doesn’t cut it for your animal-loving brood, there are plenty of immersive animal experiences that’ll give you the feeling of an authentic wildlife safari park from the comfort of your (or someone else’s) car. Whether you want to gaze at giraffes from a double-decker safari truck or see the wild from the comfort of your own front seat, here are the best safari park experiences in the U.S.

Safari West - Santa Rosa, CA

Safari West

While a three-hour tour through the Sonoma wine country usually conjures up visions of gorgeous grapes ripening on the vine, Safari West will have you rethinking those expectations. Here, you'll board a double-decker safari truck and log some serious face time with zebras, giraffes, water buffalo and any number of the other 800 animals that call this preserve home.  Expect learning to happen, too. Safari West guides love actively engaging guests, promoting conservation and education efforts on their tours, as they expertly weave the open-air jeep in for a closer look. When tummies rumble, belly up to the Savannah Cafe that overlooks the park; the authentic food, beautiful scenery and grown-up grape juice from the region hit the spot after a long safari.

Wildest Extra: Want to make a weekend out of it? Spend the night in one of Safari West's 30 authentic African safari tents, with polished hardwood floors, en-suite bathrooms (with hot showers and real toilets), hand-hewn furniture, and ultra-plush linens atop comfortable beds.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park - Escondido, CA

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance

The San Diego Wild Animal Park (a branch of the San Diego Zoo) has everything a zoo has to offer, with a plethora of ways to see it all. Rather than keeping animals in small cages, this place opts to let the animals roam free—and puts the people in various vehicles to go out and see them. Families can commune with exotic wildlife from golf carts, African trams, zip lines, behind-the-scenes truck tours, or, even in a hot air balloon for a spectacular bird’s eye view of it all. Add in a ropes course for adventurers as young as seven, and you could spend days taking it all in. But at the heart of this animal wonderland is a mission to save the critters of the world, with its researchers and activists leading conservation efforts in 45 countries, with 380 partners in its conservation work, five conservation field stations and 200 conservation scientists working in the field or the lab, according to this article

Wildest Extra: Want to really wow your wildlife-loving kiddos? Opt for an overnight in an authentic safari tent. At the Wild Animal Park's "Roar and Snore" overnights, you'll get a nighttime tour of the zoo (with up-close animal encounters), then fall asleep to the sounds of lions' roars in the distance.

Virginia Safari Park - Natural Bridge, VA

Gas up the family wagon and grab a bucket of tasty grains for the “locals” at the gate before taking off along the three-mile paved drive through this natural animal habitat. Expect a few delighted shrieks from the littles as ostriches, llamas and zebras poke their heads through the windows to say hello and help themselves to tasty treats. When you’re done with the drive, be sure to check out the Village Walk-Thru where the kidlets can spend some QT with potbellied pigs, chickens and goats and more. Let the good times roll!

Wildest Extra: For an added fee, you can feed giraffes from a special platform, get up close and personal with the penguins or feed and pet the rhinos—all while learning how zookeepers take care of the animals and how the Safari Park is helping the animals in the wild.

Hidden Valley Animal Adventure - Varysburg, NY

What’s not to love about a family-owned and operated animal park where it’s all about the beauty of the land and the animals that make their home there? Drive your car or hop on the bus to get a rolling tour of this bucolic oasis. Little rangers can be on the lookout for llamas, bison and ostriches, all of whom may cautiously approach the tiny outstretched hands looking to feed and interact with them. It’s a ring-side seat your sidekick won’t soon forget. Add in dinner at the Trailside Grill and you’ve got the whole day planned. The park opens in May and runs through October before closing for the winter.

Wildest Extra: Winter sleigh rides through the lower park make for a magical, snowy, family-friendly outing. Sleigh bells ring!

Northwest Trek - Eatonville, WA

Katie Cotterill/ Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

With a focus on preserving and encouraging the repopulation of native Northwest wildlife, this sanctuary, just 60 miles south of Seattle, is a surprisingly perfect place to be on a rainy day. In the true spirit of the Pacific Northwest, the bison, elk and bighorn sheep (and moose, if you can spot one) are a little less camera shy when it’s overcast and drizzling. The park's all-new "Wild Drive" premier tour lets you drive your own car through the Trek's Free-Roaming, where you'll cruise by herds of Roosevelt elk, bison, moose, caribou, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, swan and deer.

After that, stretch your legs on the Animal Walking Paths as you check out grizzlies, cougars and more. Kids will love the "Kids Trek," a nature-inspired playground with ropes, slides, sand, cabins and a massive “tree trunk" to climb. Up for a hike? Access to more than five miles of paved and primitive walking trails is included in admission.

Wildest Extra:  Don't miss Eagle Passage, an immersive experience that allows visitors to see majestic bald eagles close up while giving the rescued birds—all of whom have some degree of long-term wing injury—a safe passage between habitat sections.

Bearizona Wildlife Park - Williams, AZ

Stewart Deats/ Bearizona

Drive your car on a three-mile gravel trail to see some of our country's most popular wild natives, including bison, black bears and wolves. When you're ready to stretch your legs, the winding walk-through, Fort Bearizona, will give you the perfect view of the park's resident jaguars, grizzly bears, and more. Craving cuddles? Creepy-crawly lovers can see bugs, spiders and nocturnal animals at the Mine Shaft Experience.

Wildest Extra:  Want a peek at the resident bears... right now? Check out the park's Grizzly Cams!

African Safari Wildlife Park - Port Clinton, OH

Michelle Loiselle Fulton via Facebook (used with permission)

Alpaca, bongos and camels are waiting to say hello to kids and their parents as they drive through the African Safari Wildlife Park. Cup in hand is the way they roll here. And when the drive comes to an end, be sure to check out the Walk-Thru Safari, where kidlets can come face to face with white alligators, ocelots and playful gibbons as they stroll along. In warmer months, the park brings out its giraffes for up-close encounters that let you feed these long-necked beauties a snack.

Note: The park is closed from Dec. through Apr. Check the online calendar for details.

Wildest Extra: Want to come face-to-tongue with a giraffe? Sign up for the 30-minute Giraffe Encounter, which lets you feed and mingle with the giraffes, Matata, Rudy, Poptart, and Harrison.

Wildlife Safari - Winston, OR

Wildlife Safari

Be sure to slap your “Will Break for Bison” bumper sticker to the back of your ride before driving the gang through this open-air Safari park in Oregon. Families can get up close and personal with mammals, reptiles and birds as they check out the sights and feed a few of the residents in this 600-acre park. When your little animals get restless, take a break at Safari Village, a walkable area with trains, playgrounds and a petting zoo to keep kids busy and happy. As for conservation, Wildlife Safari’s staff works hard to protect animals both internationally and domestically. They’ve helped bring over 235 cheetah cubs into the world as part of their super successful cheetah breeding program. Hooray!

Wildest Extra: Want some wine with your wild? Be sure to get tickets for the park's "Sippin' Safari," which will honor the park's 50th anniversary on July 22 with live music, wine and beer tastings, and local food trucks.

Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari - Ashland, NE

The winner of USA Today's Best Safari Park two years in a row, this Nebraska wildlife park (which is owned and operated by Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium) lets you enjoy a four-mile, drive-through experience showcasing North American wildlife. You'll see a menagerie of animals, including American elk, bison, waterfowl, raptors and white-tailed deer. At Wolf Canyon, guests can get out of their cars to gaze at grey wolves and American black bears. After the drive, take a hike to one of the park's overlooks to view the animals from above.

Note: Due to a current Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak in Nebraska, the American white pelicans in the Pelican Wetlands, the sandhill cranes and trumpeter swans in Crane Meadows and the chickens at the Hands-on Corral will not be on display until further notice. The Eagle Aviary will be closed, but the eagles are still viewable to the public. The whooping cranes will be off display.

Wildest Extra: For an extra $65 per person, you can book a Backstage Experience to see the animals and their keepers up close. Experiences include a Cheetah Conservation Experience, which gives visitors a backstage look at the state-of-the-art Cheetah Conservation Breeding Facility to see and learn how keepers care for the park's 20 cheetahs; and the Tiger Conservation Experience, in which visitors will get the chance to tour and meet the tigers at the Tiger Conservation Breeding Center.

The Wilds - Cumberland, OH

Grahm S. Jones, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

A sprawling sister property of the award-winning Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, the Wilds lets visitors get an unfettered glimpse of the animals who call this 10,000-acre park home. Here, it's the humans who go in the "cages" and the animals who get to roam free. To see the wildlife, visitors must board the park's open-air safari vehicles to see the resident rare and endangered animals roaming in their large, natural settings.

What else? Want something extra special? Select from a variety of specialty tours to soak in The Wilds’ stunning scenery. Whether you want to float the day away during a relaxing Fishing Safari on one of nearly 100 lakes; whoosh above it all on a Zipline Tour; saddle up on a Horseback Safari through the quiet prairies; snap some Insta-worthy shots during one of the park's gorgeous Sunset Tours, or get a behind-the-scenes look at the animals with a Wildside Tour—there’s an adventure for everyone!

Note: The Wilds is open May through Oct.

Lion Country Safari - Loxahatchee, FL

Courtesy of Lion Country Safari

The original drive-through safari park in the U.S. (and believed to be "the first cageless zoo in the country"), this safari spot has been serving up African game park experiences for the whole fam since 1967. It’s four miles of drive-through meetings with oryx, giraffes, rhinos, wildebeests and a whole slew of animals we’ll bet you’ve never heard of (with more than 900 total, we’re pretty confident taking that bet), each living it up in an area that replicates their natural habitat. And the lions for which the park is named? Well, they’ve got their special spot where they can’t get up to too much mischief. Ice this cake with an adjacent KOA campground where you can fall asleep listening to the nighttime sounds of the animals outside your tent, just like a real safari!

Wildest Extra: The get-up-and-move activities that are available after your car safari are awesome perks. Mini golf, a safari cruise, plenty of rides and even a splash park are all part of the day’s adventures at Safari World, the 55-acre amusement park portion of this preserve.

Fossil Rim - Glen Rose, TX

Born out of a desire to help dwindling animal populations, Fossil Rim found its roots and eventual footing in propagation programs for threatened and endangered species. Thirty years later, families still flock to this Texas park, where they can take their own vehicles around the 9.5-mile Scenic Drive, or get insider deets and educationally potent tidbits when they ride along on a Guided Tour. We love that The Overlook is smack dab in the middle of this drive, as it's the perfect stopping point for antsy toddlers. Get out and interact with friendly tortoises and curious goats at the Children’s Animal Center, or grab grub at the snack bar.

Wildest Extra: A two-hour nighttime tour through the park to see what wild antics the animals are up to once the sun sets is as thrilling as it sounds! Want to stay even later? Adventurous explorers can also spend the night at the Fossil Rim Lodge, which was the original home for original Fossil Rim owner Tom Mantzel; or at one of the safari cabins overlooking one of Fossil Rim's most popular wildlife watering holes.

Out of Africa - Camp Verde, AZ

Out of Africa is a safari park in Arizona
Courtesy Out of Africa

Nominated as one of the top 10 Best Safari Parks in the U.S. by USA Today, this 100-acre park is home to hundreds of exotic mammals, birds and reptiles from all over the world—with an assortment of fun ways to see them. Climb aboard the open-air safari truck—or upgrade to a"Supermog" (an all-terrain, safari vehicle modified from a medium-size Isuzu truck)—and set out on a bumpy ride into the Serengeti preserve to see zebras, sable antelope, gemsbok, and more. You may even get a chance to feed a giraffe along the way! When the ride is over, there's plenty more to see, including the "Tiger Splash" show, which lets you spy on Bengal and Siberian tigers as they splash around in their pool and interact with their keepers; and the "Predator Feed," where keepers throw 800 pounds of raw food to eagerly-waiting carnivores.

Wildest Extra: Adrenaline junkies will want to sign up for a zip-line tour over the rolling hills. The "Racing Raptor" features three parallel lines—so you and your kids can zip the more than 1,000 feet together above the animals; the Predator zipline tour gives brave riders a course of five zip line runs above it all (Children must be 8 years old to ride.).

Wild Animal Safari - Pine Mountain, GA

Whether you drive your vehicle, rent a zebra bus (you know you want to) or take advantage of the guided bus tour, your pack will have a grand time spotting many (and even touching a few!) of the 65 different species that roam this 250-acre Serengeti adventure park. Think zebras, elk, bison, camels and more. When the park first opened, it was specially designed to capture the imagination of the littles and engender a lifelong love of animals. Not much has changed since then. Kiddos of all ages love the personal attention they get from the curious animals here! Don't miss the park's newest resident: Malaika, a giraffe calf born in January.

Note: The Wild Animal Safari also has locations in Strafford, MO and Aggieland, TX.

Wildest Extra: The chance to hand-feed animals at the park's Walkabout Adventure Zoo is a hoot for the tot lot. "The animals are sociable, and you may be slobbered on if you are too close," warns the website (in other words, animal-loving kids will be in heaven). Fuzzy, friendly and hungry, these animals are sure to elicit some giggles from the little ones who feed them.
