Remember the days when we spent hours perfecting our hair? We don’t really miss the zig-zag parts, but having unlimited time to spend on perfecting our hair was pretty awesome, right? It’s possible that now it feels like “cute simple hairstyles” mean a messy bun and… a messy bun. Which is fine (we love them, too). But we’ve got a few hair tricks up our sleeves to save time and look awesome.

Whether you’re rocking short, long, curly, straight, thick, thin, or any combination out there, we’ve rounded up some of the very best tips and tricks to tame your tresses in no time flat. There’s not a single rule out there that says quick hairstyles are all ponytails and air drying (though if that’s your style, we fully support it). If you’re looking for ways to change up your look, you’re in the right place.

Rosie the Riveter-Inspired Updo

If you’re a die-hard messy bun person, here’s a quick way to update it from @kandeejohnson! You’ll want super texturized hair so it holds the style better and gives you the “messy” vibe we’re all going for with this one. It’s also a great second- or third-day hair option. Just start with dry shampoo.

You’ll need:

Twisted Half-Up

You can pull this one off with hair that’s around shoulder-length or longer! All it takes is a couple of elastics and a twist of the wrist (@megs.beauty.project slows it down so it’s easy) If you have curly or wavy hair, you might want to consider straightening it out a little bit first (straighter hair shows off the details of this ‘do), but you can leave it texturized if you prefer. Out of your face and looks like it took way longer than it really does.

You’ll need:

Half Up with a Claw Clip

Think you can’t pull off a claw clip with shorter hair? Think again. @montana_coles breezes through this style that’s giving serious Cool Girl. Pick a cute claw clip for casual days, or try an embellished or metal one for the office.

You’ll need:

Bubble Fauxhawk

“Bubble” styles are some of the most fun and easiest ways to change up your ‘do. Julie from @artistryofserendipity makes it completely foolproof, plus it can be done on all lengths of hair!

You’ll need:

  • Those trusty clear elastics (are you sensing a theme here?)
  • A 3-barrel waver if you want to replicate Julie’s texture (this best-seller is a winner)

Low Double Buns

Double buns that literally take less time than just brushing and blow drying would? Sign. Us. Up. This hack from @everydayscrunchie (how adorable is that?) is lightening fast and excellent for shorter and mid-length hair. The ultimate in cute simple hairstyles, right?

You’ll need:

  • Clear elastics
  • Two small claw clips—we’re recommending sticking with the classic ones that are shown since you’re “rolling” the clip into the bun and the curved clip teeth are really helpful here (these are good to have on-hand!)
  • A little smoothing + shine spray for the sides (this one is perfect). Only use a little if you have straight and/or fine hair; otherwise, you’ll risk looking a little more greasy than smooth. You can also skip this part completely!

Side Twist Bun

We love a style that looks so much more involved than it really is. @shelly_lynn_beauty is doing this one on day 5 hair, but you could do it virtually whenever, even if it’s damp.

You’ll need:

  • A ponytail elastic (these should last you a while!)
  • Texture spray if you need extra “grip” or are doing this style on freshly-washed hair (it’s also a great go-to on days when your hair is feeling flat or a little lifeless—this one is our pick.)
  • “Bunny ear” scrunchie (you don’t have to, but adding one of these cute little scrunchies makes it look even more polished)
  • Finishing spray

Claw Clip Space Buns

Repeat after us: Space buns aren’t just for kids. They’re so fast. They’re super easy. They get the hair out of your face. You also get the bonus of a little height to your style, and that always makes it look like you tried (even though as @samanthasbeautyconfessions shows above, you didn’t have to try very hard at all).

You’ll need:

  • A tail comb for parting
  • Two mini claw clips (snap up this 6 pack)
  • Hairspray if you need some extra hold

Straightening Iron Waves

How dare we add something like a full head of waves to the list, right? Stick with us. If you’ve ever wondered how these undone, messy, lasts-for-days waves are created, @mathilde_heather nails it. The trick is to gently pull the iron through your hair, then twist the strand back with your fingers while it’s still hot to set the curl. Even though this particular style takes a little longer initially, with some dry shampoo, it lasts for days and looks better the longer you wear it! Remember to straighten the ends for the ultimate “undone” vibe.

You’ll need:

  • A straightener. We like this one because the barrel is actually curved, too, making it easier to pull it down the hair strand into a curl.
  • A claw clip to divide your hair into sections for curling
  • Mathilde is using this dry finishing spray for lived-in texture

Lifted Rockstar

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxNgffnu3m_/?hidecaption=true

We definitely didn’t forget about you, short-hair queens. @kaitlyn_hubert knows a thing or two about making her hot cropped locks pop. If your hair is short, you probably already love how fast it is to style and go, so try this to mix things up with minimal effort.

You’ll need:

Hairpin Bun

Aside from doing literally nothing, this is about as fast as “doing your hair” and pulling off a cute simple hairstyle can possibly get. @hellohairhouse takes seconds to make this soft style come to life.

You’ll need:

Barbie Ponytail

Whether you’re into Barbie or not, this bouncy pony from @haiirologybyjen amps up your everyday updo. Something about a swingy style that just puts you in a good mood. Bonus!

You’ll need:

  • Hair elastic
  • A teasing brush (remember to push down and only down when you’re teasing. Don’t go back and forth with a teasing comb or brush unless you really love tangled hair)
  • Volumizing hair powder (sprinkle a little at your roots and use your fingers to distribute it)

Scarf Wrap

Want to try something other than your usual headband? This cute simple hairstyle takes three folds and a knot. Full stop. We really appreciate @batshevahaart giving us a quick tutorial about where to place it so that it stays put, and you can always use bobby pins if needed to avoid slipping.

You’ll need:

Crocs with socks. Oversized t-shirts over teeny tiny shorts. Stanleys and Lululemon. There’s no doubt that Gen Z and Gen Alpha styles can be a bit of a head-scratcher. To make things even more confusing, known fashion trends from back in the day are now something else altogether. Take Izod polos and boat shoes: Better not call them “preppy” unless you enjoy having your tween or tween roll their eyes at you. In hopes of properly explaining Gen Alpha style for parents everywhere, we chatted with a Gen Z teen and got some explanations from mom and interior designer Kristina Kairis.

If you need more help decoding your kid, check out our guide to middle school slang and why kids are mewing in class.

@kriskamishka

Replying to @Kaitlyn I hope this clears some more things up! But if you need a little more clarification, I added the style guide to my bio! #genalpha#genx#fashion#coquette#coquettecore#preppy#preppyaesthetic#aesthetic#cottagecoreaesthetic#millenial#egirls#egirl#kawaii#kawaiiaesthetic#softgirilifestyle#baddie

Coquette

This Gen Z and Gen Alpha style revolves around ultra-feminine things like pearls, bows, pink, pastels, and soft, lacy, girly-girl clothes. Kairis explains it as “Marie Antoinette in modern times,” and our Gen Z teen confirms this is on point. The teen expert said coquette is also used to describe a current mood, as in “I’m feeling very coquette today.”

Preppy

This Gen Z and Gen Alpha style is probably the most confusing to understand—at least for Gen X and Millenials. What we consider “preppy” a.k.a. polo shirts, khaki shorts, deck shoes, over-the-shoulder sweaters, and plaid, is NOT preppy for Gen Z and Gen Alpha kiddos. For them, preppy means bold and bright colors, Lululemon, Stanley cups, smiley faces, and for some reason, our teen expert says neon Nirvana hoodies are also preppy (our former grunge selves are SO perplexed).

Kairis mentions that the preppy look feels like upgraded VSCO girls, and the Gen Z teen agrees. There is also a good and bad way to use the word “preppy;” it all depends on how you say it, as Kairis mentions in her TikTok.

Aesthetic-Aesthetic (a.k.a. Vanilla Girl)

We all know that the term “aesthetic” is a favorite for Gen Z and Gen Alpha kids. But what you might not know is that it’s also a style. This style is all about the beige, the neutrals, the cozy, the soft, and the mellow—hence, Vanilla Girl.

Cottage Core

According to our Gen Z teenager, cottage core is a style that looks like you want to live off the grid, raise chickens, and make bread from scratch. So, all those homesteading IG accounts you follow? They’re living the cottage core life. Kairis explains it as the English countryside, going on a picnic, living a simplified life in an oversimplified way. Kairis also included long fancy nails in her cottage core style board, but our teen expert said acrylic nails are in no way part of the cottage core aesthetic.

E-Girl

This Gen Z and Gen Alpha style features a lot of black, overdone makeup, and mesh, so your brain might automatically think Emo, but E-Girl is a shortened version of “electronic girl,” and it is a blend of emo, goth, and Japanese and Korean street style. According to Wikipedia, the style gained popularity with the worldwide release of TikTok, a stark contrast to the filtered world of Instagram, which was the preferred platform of preppy girls.

E-girls wear baggy thrift-store finds, crop tops, platform shoes, plaid miniskirts, pigtails, and anime-inspired makeup. Our teen expert said that most e-girls are known to be streamers (they use Twitch) and wear headphones. Kairis says that the E-girl style is like “coquette meets goth” and that it almost feels like a “gothy, toned-down Harajuku girl,” which is pretty accurate.

Kawaii

The Kawaii aesthetic, which is also a Japanese street style look, is similar to coquette in that there are lots of pastel colors and lace. The clothes are almost doll-like in design and include fluffy skirts, scalloped shirts, patterned overalls, and anything that feels “cute.” There are also a lot of animal logos, Hello Kitty, jewelry, and keychains.

Soft Girl

This Gen Alpha micro-trend is a blend of coquette and Kawaii, with a bit of edge for good measure. Think eyelet fabric, pastels, gingham, and floral prints paired with platform shoes, bucket hats, and colorful hair clips. Cardigans and cropped jackets are also a big part of this look.

Kairis posted another video to get more details on what kids today call what we consider to be preppy style.

Replying to @Andrea MacDonald Mil She’s answering all our burning questions! #genalpha #genx #fashion #preppy #preppyaesthetic #aesthetic #millenial #genz #style

♬ original sound – Christina | Designing Luxury

Our resident Gen Z expert said she hadn’t heard the term “Old Money” and figures it’s a Gen Alpha phrase. This aesthetic is what millennials and Gen X would consider “preppy” fashion. It’s definitely in line with the silent luxury fashion trend that gained popularity thanks to Succession. Think simple lines, neutral colors, loafers, sweaters worn over the shoulders, leather tote bags, blazers, etc. There aren’t too many kids wearing this style, however.

If you’re wondering why you aren’t hearing too much about the style of Gen Z and Gen Alpha boys, it’s because while there are some e-boys and preppy guys out there, a majority of tween and teen boys tend to dress as if they’ve just rolled out of bed. They almost always wear Crocs with socks, t-shirts, and athletic shorts, something that hasn’t changed much since we were young—minus the Crocs, of course.

If you want more help decoding today’s fashion trends and micro-styles your tween or teen might be coveting, Kairis created a free Gen Alpha style guide you can download here.

14 Things We’re Falling for from Target’s Magnolia Hearth & Hand Fall Refresh

Target’s Newest Clothing Line Was Designed by KIDS and is AWESOME!

The “I Spy” game is a perfect puzzle to amuse the kids any day. Consider it your secret weapon for long road trips or traffic jams. Here’s a new item for your “I’m bored!” arsenal: a do-it-yourself I Spy jar. This easy, sensory craft is low- to no-cost and as added bonus puts to use some of those miscellaneous toys and odds and ends you’ve been meaning to recycle. Scroll down for tips on making your own.

I-Spy toy supplies

You will need:

Filler. You are limited here only by your imagination and the size of the jar. Look for small toys, dice, dominos, pencils, broken watches, cool coins, earrings, broken hair clips, spools, old keys or similar items. Here’s your excuse to round up all the goody bag/vending machine toys and those game pieces you lost the rest of. Avoid anything too heavy (rocks) that could potentially break the jar if shaken.

Jars. Any size jar will do, but how much or how little you put in will depend on your jar. For little kids who might shake the jar more vigorously, try a jar with a screw-top lid like a Mason jar.

Pencil and paper. You can either make your child a check-list to try and find certain things or have them write (or say out loud while you write) the things they spot.

Gather round. First, hunt down your items, preferably while the kids aren’t looking. This is an easy craft to do with the kids, but it’s also fun to make sure they don’t know what’s going in the jar.

For the littles. For toddlers or younger, you can add fewer things to the jar or multiples. For example, if you want to teach about the number 3, put 3 red beads, 3 small dinosaurs, 3 plastic swords, etc. Remember, you can use any item that fits and even if it is a beloved toy, you can just take it out at the end of play.

I-Spy Jar

Switch it up. If you want more of a challenge, make the check-list you create for your kids a puzzle, too. Ask them to find something that opens a door, or something that meows. You can also save some room and then add one item to the jar a day and see if they can figure out what it is.

Dude! Get ready to pull that gray-streaked hair back because banana hair clips from the 80s are back! The elusive clip has been seen in action on the runways at Fashion Week this year, but we don’t need a bunch of fashion-forward pros to tell us what we already know––that the curved clip is, like, all we need in a hair accessory.

The banana hair clip (which gets its name from the contoured shape that resembles a banana. No duh.) made its debut in the 80s and was hailed as a fashion-forward way to pull hair back off the face but still give ladies length and style. It paired perfectly with those feathered bangs and major shoulder pads, and pretty much gave us the mullet-style without committing to a full-on “business in the front, party in the back” haircut. Totally radical.

Shockingly, you don’t have to pay vintage collector prices to snag your own banana hair clips. A quick search yielded tons of budget-friendly options from pretty much every drugstore and Amazon. The good news is, you don’t have to pair your banana hair clip with the fashion choices from the 80s to relive your glory days. The contoured hair clip is a great way to say bye to the mom bun, but hello to some righteous style.

The Revamped Cabbage Patch Kids: Hit or Miss?

They blow us away with their intelligence, smiles and unconditional love. But, sometimes more often than not our kids just leave us scratching our heads and laughing. For National Puzzle Day we want to hear the most bizarre, hilarious, confounding and overall puzzling things your kids have ever said. Share your stories with us on social media by tagging #RedTricycle or send our editor an email (Editor AT tinybeans.go-vip.net). We’ll feature our favorites!

And, to kick it off, our Community and Marketing Manager, Sara shared with us a conversation she recorded with her then four-year-old daughter, Charlie.

This morning, confusion ensues when Charlie uses the word “barrettes” instead of “hair clips” like she usually does.

Charlie: Mommy, my teacher has breasts.
Me: Why yes, Charlie, I suppose she does.
Charlie: She keeps them in a box. I have breasts too, but I don’t keep them in a box.
Me: Actually honey, you don’t have breasts yet. You will when you’re a grown up.
Charlie: I do TOO have breasts! I KEEP THEM IN A JAR MOMMY. My breasts are PURPLE AND PINK WITH POLKA DOTS.

You may know Kiwi Crate as the folks that deliver hands-on fun to your doorstep in the form of a sweet crate chock full of the goods needed to create engaging arts and crafts projects with your kids. Beyond their convenient and cool service, Kiwi Crate also offers a variety of awesome DIY crafts and ideas from fun recipes to science experiments and everything in between. They’ve shared with us 10 toys that you can make at home with your kiddos, all which can easily be made with a few household items. Are you ready to say goodbye to the “I’m bored” blues?

Easter Egg Maracas
Kids love making noise! We imagine that’s why they love rocking out to homemade instruments. These easy-to-make maracas look like papier mache–but without all the mess.

Felt Play Mat
What better way to let the kids get creative than to let them design their own towns? The sky is the limit on what they can create for this fun play mat that is easily folded up and stored anywhere. Our kids were in heaven designing their dream towns–no shortage of water and sea creatures for them!

Lego Puzzle Cards
This is for the kids who think the best toy is a brand-new LEGO set. We were so excited to find these DIY LEGO Instruction Books. For little building fans, this is a great activity to bring the energy level down and focus– for a little while, at least!

Photo Puzzle
These personalized puzzles were a big hit with our little artists! They had a great time picking out the perfect pictures and trying their little hands at decoupage. They even make for a great math review for preschoolers working on their counting skills.

Sock Snowmen
These cuddly little friends are a huge hit. We made them using all of our mismatched socks and it was the best use of socks we’ve found so far! The kids had a great time decorating their snowmen with our craft supplies. We love how they can be personalized.

Glow Stick Balloons
Winter means long hours of indoor activities or finding creative ways to play in the dark. These balloons are a surprise hit requiring only two materials!

Milk Carton Animals
An easy animal craft for fans of barn animals! From piggies to doggies, cows and sheep, your kiddos can create a whole little farm in no time.

Cardboard Tube Marble Run
If you’re like us, there’s a pretty good chance that you have a growing “collection” of toilet paper and paper towel rolls filling up your recycling bin. What we especially love about this activity is that it requires very little in terms of materials, the clean-up is minimal, and it encourages children to use problem-solving and creative thinking skills.

Story Wheel
Storytime is one of the most special times with kids–sitting with them and their wonderful imaginations and making up stories together. This will quickly become a favorite way to spend an evening as a family.

Tin Box Monsters
When our kids started stashing all their little trinkets, hair clips, and crayons in empty mint boxes, we thought we could make their habit into a great craft. By adding a little bit of felt and some googly eyes, these boxes are transformed into adorable little treasure keepers that can be personalized for any little creative little artist.
