Sabia Tree Farm

Head to this charming and quaint farm nestled in Fairfield County for neatly lined rows of trees. A handsaw is available to borrow and staff will assist you with baling and securely tying the tree to your car. You can also buy a pin stand that is customized for your tree here. Bonus: Professional photographers are available for a photo session you can book. Visit the farm stand for fresh farmed eggs and handmade gifts from local vendors.

Jones Family Farms

Weekend visits for both harvest-your-own trees and fresh-cut trees require a reservation. Come on a weekday when it's less busy and reservations are not required. Guests that plan to harvest their own tree should arrive no later than 4 p.m. Trees are sustainably grown and pruned every year during the eight-to-10-year period it takes to grow to full size, and every buyer of a cut-your-own tree gets a free commemorative Woodbury pewter ornament. The farm’s Barnyard Shop sells holiday treats and decor including wreaths, handmade crafts and tree stands, and an outdoor Holiday Courtyard Market offers open-air shopping. Payment is by cash or check only. U-cut trees are $92 on weekdays and $97 on weekends.

Maple Row Farms

This farm has practiced sustainable farming for well over 200 years. Choose between spruce or fir by using their nifty online map. Did you know that fir and pine trees will hold their needles the longest over a spruce tree? Trees at Maple Farm are guaranteed so if you bring home one that loses a large amount of needles, return it to the Farm before Christmas for a replacement or a certificate for the following year. All trees are discounted $10 on weekdays. It’s generally less busy too. Cut your own trees on weekends are $118 and pre-cut trees start at $118. You will be provided with twine but will need to ask them to help you tie it to your car. You can also purchase wreaths and other holiday items. The weekend offers hayrides, refreshments and tailgating is allowed. Your whole family will have a great time!

U-Cut Christmas Tree Farms on Long Island

Santa's Christmas Tree Farm

Experience the spirit of the season at this one-stop shop on the North Fork of Long Island. Santa's Christmas Tree Farm carries over 8,000 Douglas Fir trees to choose from with an average tree height between 6-7 feet tall. Field-cut trees are $90 while pre-cut Frasier firs start at $90. Santa's helpers will be around to provide you with a handsaw, as well as trim and tie your tree to your car. The farm offers a synthetic ice skating rink, a petting zoo, make-your-own s'mores, and a photo op with Santa on weekends. Elwood Christmas Tree Farm

This small home-run lot has more than 4,000 trees and is one of Long Island’s most westerly Christmas Tree farms. Bring your own saw and you can take home one of their many tree varieties including firs, pines and spruces. (They also sell pre-cut trees and will cut one for you with your saw.) Set on a picturesque spot on a slight hill, the farm is low frills but gets super busy. Trees are reasonably priced based on the height and species you select. Call for reservations.

Tilden Lane Farm

Tilden Lane Farm offers three types of spruce trees to cut yourself (a type good for holding the weight of lights and decorations) and two kinds of firs, which tend to last longer. Stock is extremely limited if you want to cut your own, so head there on Thanksgiving weekend for the best selection. The farm also offers fresh-cut Fraser fir trees. Hand saws are available or you can bring your own and staff can help with tree wrapping and securing to your vehicle. Trees are $80 and wreaths are $40. Don’t miss the farm-produced honey and you may be able to see some of the bees working on a warm day. Although there are no bathroom facilities on-site, you can make a lovely day of it in the nearby villages of Huntington or Northport by visiting some great restaurants and shops. They are open weekends starting Nov. 25 through Dec. 10.

Beck's can loan you a saw, and tree bailing and drilling are free. Bonus: there's also a train theme here, with holiday garlands, pre-order custom wreaths, and train-themed gifts are available in the barn, the "Christmas Junction." The whole family will love it!

Legend has it that the Kringle Family has come to offer hot chocolate out of the old gas tanks (don't worry, it's completely safe and sanitary!), let guests play unlimited rounds of "Ski-Ball", play "Reindeer Games" or sing holiday karaoke. You even have exclusive access to the Kringles' private office. Add-ons include the brand-new Speedway Slot Cars and photo booth aboard Santa's new-and-improved sleigh (you'll have to see it to believe it). 

Insider Tip: Santa's scheduled to visit the Filling Station December 1, 9, 16 and 22. And Krampus will be making an appearance on December 20 and 21.

This year's theme is focusing on Buzz Lightyear, but don't be surprised if a few other Toy Story characters show up too. Some of the gingerbread creations have great names like "Courage Against Zurg," "The Future is Bright," and of course, "To Infinity and Beyond!" While the exhibit is free, donations will be gladly accepted to go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDRF).

Seattle Center Winterfest

Seattle Center is doing it up for the holidays starting the day after Thanksgiving and running through the New Year. If you're looking for free and affordable holiday activities and entertainment, head to the heart of the city. Kids can marvel as a miniature locomotive makes it way through a turn-of-the-century village inside the Armory and complete a scavenger hunt while they're at it (you'll find sheets at the train station). Follow it up with a weekend ice sculpting demonstration or a live performance at the Armory (hint: we're looking forward to the School of Rock Seattle performance on December 10, SANCA's youth performers on December 17, and the KlezKids performance on the 24th) before grabbing something tasty for dinner. Wander through the Campus Luminata light display and end at the International Fountain where things are always hopping before heading home.

Holiday highlight: Take a trip to the top of the Space Needle to grab a picture with jolly old St. Nick in his glass sleigh. Seeing the city's Christmas lights below are totally worth the trip. As for New Year's Eve, plan an evening of music at Seattle Center, or if your kids won't last that long, plan to spend the day at the Seattle Children's Museum for their Winter Market Event featuring a "Noon Year's Eve" pj party and a sock skating rink.

Winter Brilliance

While you're at Seattle Center, be sure to swing into Chihuly Garden and Glass to see Winter Brilliance. The display features over 700 hand-blown glass sculptures and combines glass art, video projection technology, and music for a full-sensory experience. One of the newest Seattle Christmas events, it celebrates the magic of the season in a whole new way. Catch the show in Gallery 1 into the new year when you visit.

George Balanchine's The Nutcracker

With lavish sets and costumes designed by Ian Falconer (of Olivia fame) and the ever-mesmerizing choreography of Balanchine, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker is a forever favorite for many Seattle families. This full-length show is best suited for school-aged kids, but theatergoers of all ages will be glued to their seats for the entire two-plus hour show, basking in the care and craftsmanship of this delightful production. The 40-foot-tall Christmas tree, snow flurries on stage and Mother Ginger’s magical skirt (it weighs more than 60 pounds!) are all part of what makes this production one of the best around.

Insider Tip: A sensory-friendly performance is scheduled for December 21 at 2 p.m.

Paddington Saves Christmas

Another theater production you won't want to miss is SCT's latest. Even the tiniest theater lovers will be able to enjoy this holiday show, starring their favorite clumsy Bear, Paddington. With his telltale red hat and blue coat, they’ll fall for Paddington’s innocent antics as he works to save Christmas from being a total disaster. It all starts out simply enough—with Paddington and Mrs. Bird making the holiday marmalade (for Paddington’s sandwiches, of course). But oops!—they’ve run out of sugar. A trip to borrow some from grumpy neighbor, Mr. Curry, turns into more than Paddington bargained for when he agrees to help out with household chores in exchange. Things sort of snowball from there, leaving poor Paddington to fix it all before December 25. The show runs for 70 minutes with no intermission.

Insider Tip: There is a sensory-friendly performance scheduled for Dec. 11 at 11 a.m.

Pick a beautiful bouquet

There’s a reason why flowers are the go-to gift for moms on Mother’s Day. Spring's most spectacular flowers are in full bloom, and garden starts are finally rousing from their winter slumber. So if finding a great plant, bouquet or garden accessory is on your list of things to do with mom, you can’t go wrong with these options. For bright, bold blooms head to the Seattle Chinese Garden’s annual Peony Festival, where you’ll find gorgeous flowers available for purchase (or your viewing pleasure) and live performances too. If mom wants to spice up her garden with herbs, veggies and fruit starts, the Tilth Alliance’s Annual Edible Plant Sale, scheduled for Mother’s Day weekend, is the place to find what you need. It the go-to spot to find plants that grow really well in our temperate rainforest climate.

Krukeberg Garden in Shoreline is another great spot to hit. Over Mother's Day weekend parents will find plants to purchase, and kids can make a newspaper pot nasturtium planter (Sat. & Sun., 10 a.m.-2 p.m. only), so they can come home with a little something for mom too. If you’re on the Eastside, it doesn’t get easier or more festive than Oxbox Farm’s SpringFest. Explore the farm’s trails and nature playground before sitting down for an OxEd family activity and a farm-fresh meal from the Outdoor Kitchen. Trust us, Mom will thank you. 

Spend the day at the market

A day at Seattle’s one and only Pike Place Market is sure to be a hit with any mom, especially when it involves live music, kids’ activities, a scavenger hunt and (undeniably our favorite part) temporary mom tattoos. Did we mention the 14th Annual Flower Festival and Free Comic Book Day are scheduled for that weekend too? You can’t miss with this pick. MOHAI’s Spring Fling on Saturday is another one to put on your radar. And if you’re willing to travel a bit, the Native Art Market at ALMA in Tacoma is worth it. They’ve got a covered outdoor patio where you can grab a gourmet bite to eat after you've shopped.

Take mom to a museum

With so many amazing museums in Seattle, there are lots of Mother's Day outing options. But we’ve got our eye on the Museum of Flight where moms get in for free as a way to say thanks for all they do. Be sure to check out the museum's Weekend Family Workshop when you’re there. Kids can make a sweet keepsake for mom with a STEM focus. Families can also swing by the Seattle Art Museum to catch the latest exhibit—Our Blue Planet: Global Visions of Water—before it moves on at the end of the month. Hint: Lauren Halsey’s installation is also worth checking out when you visit. Treat mom to an afternoon of art and great eats, and don’t forget kids 14 and under are always free at SAM.

Bring mom to a game

She sits on the sidelines at every kids' sporting event known to humans, so it’s a total treat when families can sit together and enjoy game day from the stands. Three of Seattle’s most exciting sports teams are playing at home in Seattle on Mother’s Day weekend. Bring Mom to watch the Mariner’s take on the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday at T-Mobile Park. When you do, she’ll get a Mariner’s clear purse (for the first 10,000 moms in attendance) and kids (14 and under) can get a Mariner’s Bat Backpack as part of Little League Day at the game, too. Mom might also enjoy watching the Seattle Reign match against Louisville at Lumen Field on Sunday. Or if an early celebration is what you're after take Mom to watch the Seattle Storm play against the Minnesota Lynx on Friday night at Climate Pledge Arena. Go teams!

Soak up the scenery

While a Mother’s Day hike at a local park is a great way to find a view on sunny day, families looking for a more relaxed approach to scenery seeking should check out the Mother’s Day train rides hosted by the Northwest Railway Museum. A great way to “blow off some steam,” families can board in either Snoqualmie or North Bend for the 90-minute round trip that passes by some of Snoqualmie Valley’s most picturesque scenery, including scenic Snoqualmie Falls. We’ll hope for clear skies and rainbows on your run.

Whip up something good to eat

We heart programs that help kids plan something special for moms on Mother’s Day. Enter PCC Markets and two Kitchen Chemistry classes running the Friday and Saturday before Mother’s Day. Brunch is the theme of this in-person kids workshop (do you see where we're going with this?). When they are finished, kids will not only be able to make mom a special breakfast in bed, they’ll be able to do it like pros. If you've already got brunch covered, mom and the kids can sign up for a delish dumplings class in Bellevue on Sunday. You know what they say about the family that cooks together! They've got skills.

Head to the farm

Eastside farms are making an outdoor Mother’s Day easy this year. It all starts with Kelsey Creek's Mother's Day on the Farm event that includes animal treats, goat walks and a special Mother’s Day surprise. Families can also add a little flower magic to their day when they sign up for the Mommy and Me in the Garden program at Farrel-McWhirter in Redmond. Blooms, animals and a sweet kid's craft are in store. Remember to register early for these popular events.

Laugh with mom

There’s no denying it takes a real sense of humor to be a parent. Prepare for some serious LOLs when you take mom to an improv comedy show at Post Alley. More than just “yo mama” jokes, the players at this all-ages show balance understanding the real struggles that come with parenting with poking fun at them too. The show is just an hour long (not too far past bedtime), so it’s an easy one to turn into a family outing, a low-key date night or a night out with your mom squad. Plus, moms get a discount on admission—no joke. Grab tickets while you can.

Race through the day

Sporty moms will flock to the Mother’s Day Half & 5K that gives racers the chance to run around one of the area’s most beautiful parks. The 5K is a great “first run” for newbies or folks running as a family. And the half might just bring mom a new PR on her special day. Moms can also run for a cause by registering for the Move4Mona 5K Challenge. Organized by a local mom, proceeds from this race are used to support educational efforts around the globe for all kids and empower women and girls, too. Sign up to race in Bellevue, Edmonds or your own ‘hood over Mother’s Day weekend.

Plan a mountain daycation

While spending Mother’s Day weekend at Suncadia Resort is a special treat, families can also plan a quick daycation to celebrate Mom. The day before the big day is when you should schedule your mountain adventure. That’s when families can shop the Mother’s Day Market at Nelson Farm or sign up for the tea party and craft class. There’s also an opportunity for Mom and a kiddo to learn a new skill like trout fishing, archery and hiking. All of these activities are open to guests and day visitors, but you will need to register. If you do make a staycation weekend of it, make your Mother’s Day brunch reservations at Portals and a spa treatment for Mom soon. Trust us, it's what mom really wants.

On the Top of Your Holiday Must-Dos: Christkindlmarket

Christkindlmarket — Chicago’s take on a traditional German Christmas market—is back with locations in the Loop and Wrigleyville. Should you take the kids? Ja!  Shop, eat, enjoy free entertainment, shop some more, and even say “guten tag” to Santa Claus. Read on for the highlights and a few tips on what to do while you’re in the area.

When and Where?

Taking place Nov. 19-Dec. 24 at Daley Plaza and Nov. 19-Dec. 31 at Wrigleyville's Gallagher Way, you'll see the market's signature wooden cabins topped with festive red-and-white-striped canopies. Inspired by the real deal in Nuremburg, each cabin is packed with handmade gifts, food and drinks from around the world and many are run by native German speakers. The market is outdoors and we all know how cold our fair city can get, so bundle up and spend your time there wisely.

Meet a Real-Life Fairy

The market's ethereal, angelic mascot is a crowned fairy with gold and white robes. Called "The Christkind," she's rooted in folklore that dates back to the 1500s, when a "grand angel" led holiday parades in Germany. The Christkind is thought to be the gift bearer in most German-speaking countries (much like Santa Claus is here). This year, she will make virtual appearances during the Christkind Story Time, every Sun., Nov.20-Dec. 24, 2 p.m. 

Highlights at the Daley Location

Frank's Ornament House
You'll find sentimental gifts for everybody on your list. Nested in baskets are thousands of glass ornaments, organized by theme, shape and color. Look for those related to your kids' interests (there's everything from soccer balls to pianos) or pick up glittery starts, orbs and diamonds.

Santa's House
Santa's abode comes to the market courtesy of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events for the City of Chicago and sits next to the City's official Christmas tree. You have to stand outside in line to see the big guy in red, but it's worth the wait for a one-on-one meeting. Snap photos, dish what's on your list, and savor the "ho, ho, ho."

Food, Food & More Food
There are nearly 20 food and drink stands at the Daley location — most run by German vendors who came from as far as Tuttlingen and Stuttgart. Go for the warming delights, like schnitzel, potato pancakes and goulash soup. For a Chicago tradition, stop for stollen (a traditional German holiday cake) from Dinkel's Bakery. Don't forget hot spiced cider and hot chocolate, available at numerous cabins as well as inside the Grand Timber House next to the stage, which has seats and tables if you want to cozy up for a while.

Best Shopping Picks
Hand-poured candles made from German honey. Wooden cuckoo clocks crafted in the Black Forest. Mouth-blown glass vases from Poland. Stoneware beer steins as big as your head. Every cabin at Christkindlmarket is filled with charms and it's tough to play favorites. But if you have kids to entertain, there are some obvious stops. Go to Toy Wonderland for wooden toys and games from Dresden, Germany; and Gifts from Eastern Europe to eye up Russian nesting dolls and papier-mâché laquer boxes. Kids also love wooden nutcrackers from Hoffmann Company from Dresden. Our favorite is Der Lindwurm & Wyvern's Liar from Altenhain, Germany, which displays intricate wood-carved animals, dragons and fairytale creatures.

Highlights at the Gallagher Way Location

Tree Lighting Ceremony
Gallagher Way will host a tree lighting ceremony to kickoff the holiday season as part of their Winterland festivities. The ceremony will include special guests, a musical performance, festive decor and the opportunity to shop, skate and enjoy concessions, Nov. 29.

While You're in the Loop

Ice skating at Maggie Daley offers sweet views of the city and ice skating at Millennium Park happens daily in front of "The Bean". Millennium Park even offers free ice skating lessons on Saturdays and Sundays.

Stop in to chat with Santa and the holiday window displays that Macy's State Street is known for.

If you're feeling ambitious, turn your trip to Christkindlmarket into a staycation. Book the Elf Decorated Room at Swissôtel Chicago and enjoy a cozy, festive space. Upgrade the experience to include toys, books and games to enjoy while in the comfort of your room.

While You're in Wrigleyville

Besides Christkindlmarket, Gallagher Way will be decked out with holiday flare bigger and brighter than ever before during this year’s Winterland. Celebrate the holidays by taking part in the many Winterland programs happening Nov. 19-Feb. 20, including a Festival of Lights celebration, ice skating, curling, ice bumper cars and skating lessons, Santa’s Workshop, wreath-making classes, outdoor holiday movies and much more.

Join Lincoln Park Zoo for their annual celebration of ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo. This one-of-a-kind, festive holiday experience offers a free, merry, family-oriented celebration of joy right in the heart of the city, Nov. 19-Jan. 2.

Across the street from Wrigley Field you'll find Lucky Strike Social with bowling, video games, ping pong, pool tables, air hockey, board games and a very addictive game of basketball Connect Four.  It's a great spot to warm up, play some games and grab a bite to eat.

  • If possible, visit the markets on weekdays when it tends to be less crowded.
  • Some booths are cash only, so be sure to make a stop at an ATM on the way.
  • Reserve discounted parking before you ever leave the house by using spothero.com. Or, check the parking deals section for both the Loop and Wrigleyville for more discounted options.
  • Print the Christkindlmarket scavenger hunt to keep the kids entertained and engaged throughout the market.
