This may be true every year, but this time, we mean it: 2024 is THE year of the sequel. It appears nearly every film-favorite character—from Michael Keaton’s nostalgic bio-exorcist to Jack Black’s kung fu-fighting panda, to Disney’s Kings of the Pride Lands—is furthering their storyline on the big screen. No bother to us, though—we are here for it!

Ahead, we break down the new family movies in 2024 that you and your littles can enjoy together. They start early next year and continue through the ball drop, so no matter when the kids utter those dreaded two words, “We’re bored,” there’s a family-friendly title just waiting to whisk them away to another time and place. Plus, we all know there’s nothing a bucket of buttered popcorn and a great story can’t resolve.

"Robot Dreams"

A movie poster from Robot Dreams, which is a new family movie in 2024
Arcadia Motion Pictures

Spanish director Pablo Berger's Robot Dreams was a surprise nominee at this year's Oscars. It lost the best-animated film award to The Boy and the Heron, but that doesn't make it any less magical. About a city pup who orders a companion robot to stave off loneliness, the '80s-set musical has little dialogue but oodles of charm. It's one of those viewing experiences that will entertain all the eyeballs in the room, but go a step further with the adults and have them crying buckets.

Starring: Ivan Labanda, Albert Trifol Segarra, Rafa Calvo, Jose Garcia Tos, Jose Luis Mediavilla, Graciela Molina, and Esther Solans

With the second iteration, protag Riley has entered teen-dom, and Joy, the bright-eyed leader of her inner spectrum of feels, faces a new era, as a demolition team makes room in their headquarters for new, more complex emotions—like the dreaded anxiety. Oh, and Riley is barreling toward puberty.

"The Untitled Karate Kid Movie"

In 2010, producers resurrected the beloved, butt-kicking '80s franchise with a modern retelling of a fish out of water who embraces the teachings of a kung fu master. Fourteen years later, the dōjō is again open for big-screen business. some are really scratchy some are silken thread
it's ok to try things on to see how it feels
because clothes I suppose are just the way that you're dressed

What’s New For Halloween Time 2023 at Disneyland

Disneyland Resort

At Disneyland Park, you are sure to see plenty of your favorite characters in their finest Halloween-inspired get-ups. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and some of their pals cast a ghostly glow with new outfits made with luminescent fabrics and bat details.

Joshua Sudock/Disneyland Resort

Jack Skellington and his friends from “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” wreck the halls of Haunted Mansion Holiday once again and take you on a doom buggy ride the whole family will enjoy.

Joshua Sudock/Disneyland Resort

Each night you’ll be treated to a delightfully spooky display of vibrant lights, projections of ghosts flying through the air, frightful Halloween songs, and so much more. You may even get a fireworks display if you time your visit right.

What’s New for Halloween Time 2023 at Disney California Adventure Park

Disneyland Resort

Disney California Adventure Park had our favorite Halloween ride overlays that truly transformed the park into what felt like a Halloween Adventure Park. The family-friendly Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree in Cars Land opts for a happily hair-raising soundtrack to become Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree. The nearby Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters takes guests on a wicked whirl as Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween.

What’s New for Plaza de la Familia 2023

Plaza de familia at Disneyland Halloween Time
Disneyland Resort

Be sure to catch “A Musical Celebration of Coco” at the Paradise Gardens Park in Plaza de la Familia for a heartwarming celebration of family. If you’re lucky you can even get a picture with Miguel. Speaking of music, nearby at the Paradise Garden Bandstand, we loved the Mariachi Divas who performed some of our favorite traditional Mexican songs.

New Food Offerings for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos

Disneyland Resort

One thing we know about Disneyland Resort is they’re going to roll out familiar favorites but they’ll also keep plenty of new and exciting offerings coming our way. This year for Halloween and that’s evidenced by all of the new merchandise and food located throughout the resort. Some of the ones that stood out were: Poison Apple Macaron, Pumpkin Cheesecake Cold Brew, Curry Royale (spiced fried cauliflower, basmati and green pea rice, and spinach with chickpeas and romanesco served with curry sauce – plant-based), Poison Apple Funnel Cake Fries, Apple Strudel Hard Float, and Candy Corn Churros. Yum!

Specially for Plaza de la Familia, Paradise Garden Grill will feature a limited-time menu that invites families to partake in a valued tradition in Mexican culture with menu highlights including chile verde chicken flautas, carnitas burrito, a plant-based chorizo quesadilla, and vanilla layer cake.

*Pro Tip: Take advantage of mobile ordering within the Disneyland Mobile App. It allows guests to pre-order and pre-pay for food at participating (counter service) restaurants throughout the resort. Skip the line and go straight to the pick up area for your order; this is especially exciting with kids.

The parks always go all out for the holiday, but this is the first time Goofy’s Kitchen at Disneyland Hotel will feature characters dressed in Halloween attire, fall decor, and themed desserts.

Exciting New Attractions Around the Resort

Disneyland Resort

If you’re planning a fall visit you’re in for some exciting new additions to both parks, including the opening of Tiana’s Palace in New Orleans Square. This quick-service restaurant inspired by “The Princess and the Frog” serves some of your favorite New Orleans-inspired dishes like gumbo, cajun spiced half chicken with baked macaroni and cheese, muffuletta sandwiches, Po’boys, and shrimp and grits. *Please note this is not a character dining location but you may be lucky enough to see Tiana strolling through New Orleans Square throughout the day.

Christian Thompson/Disneyland Resort

Across the way at Disney California Adventure Park, enter through the iconic San Fransokyo Gate Bridge for a new dining experience that you cannot miss.  San Fransokyo Square is inspired by the film, “Big Hero 6” and is a merger of……you guessed it, San Francisco and Tokyo. The food selections are vast and the offerings are diverse featuring selections such as Boudin sourdough bread bowls, a festive beer garden featuring Karl Strauss beers, Soba Noodle salad, street corn, margaritas (and non-alcoholic options), birria tacos, Ghirardelli desserts, and so much more.

This district also includes fun shopping options such as San Fransokyo Maker’s Market, Collectible Medallions, and Pan Pacific Pin Traders. Kid and adult fans alike will love the character meet and greet for Baymax and Hiro.

Tips for Your Disneyland Halloween Visit

Jill Carter

Our family had an amazing time at Disneyland Resort. I must say one of the things that helped was entering the park with a plan and list of all the things we wanted to see, do and eat. That really helped us expertly navigate our way through both parks and focus on our collective “Musts.” Do yourself a favor and plan out the details of your trip so that you can maximize your time there. I don’t even know if Halloween itself will compare to our experience at Disneyland Resort!

There’s even a 9-bedroom home with a Millennium Falcon bedroom

Sure, staying at an on-site Disney World hotel has its perks—namely, being a gondola ride or a monorail stop away from the action—but if you’re willing to forego the Disney bubble, there’s a lot you can gain from staying outside of the Disney World resort. How does an actual indoor playground sound? Or a bunk bed that doubles as a pirate ship? Or a bedroom that’ll make you feel like you’re sleeping in the Millennium Falcon? Whether you want to stay in the Star Wars universe or a Frozen land, here are the coolest Disney-themed Airbnbs near Walt Disney World.

This OMG Airbnb With a Star Wars Game Room and (Two!) Indoor Twirly Slides

Star Wars room in Disney-themed Airbnb near Disney World
Airbnb

This. House. Is. Awesome. Ready to blow your kids’ minds? This Airbnb is practically a theme park in itself, with bedrooms that double as playgrounds, complete with whirling slides and games galore. But that’s not the only time you’ll be saying “Whoa.” The Trolls room has another twirly slide, this one covered in colorful troll-ish fur and accessible through a grass-covered rainbow doorway! Kids will have a perfect movie night in the home’s lush theater room, with recliner seating for everyone. When it’s time to sleep, the seven bedrooms range from elegantly adult to whimsically kiddish, with stuffed animals propped on beds, colorful murals on the walls, and Disney touches all around that your little explorers will love to discover.

This 7-Bedroom House, Where Every Bedroom Has a Theme

From the “Haunted Mansion Landing” inside to the “Seven Dwarves Cottage” outside, this 7-bedroom home has enough themed spaces that you’re bound to find at least one to connect with — there’s even a life-sized raptor dinosaur held captive in a cage in the backyard, plus a “Jurassic Lab” with artifacts and a Power Wheels jeep for little paleontologists to climb aboard. For grown-ups, the safari-themed room, the Cocoa Beach room, and the Arabian Nights rooms are elegant bedroom spaces without being too kitschy. Harry Potter Meets Frozen at this 9-Bedroom Estate

Grown-ups will appreciate that the themed portions of this home are limited only to the two kids’ bedrooms (which sleep 8, in total) and the arcade. The rest of the place is immaculately adult (but still “kid-friendly”), with a dining table for 15, subdued colors throughout, upscale furniture, and a gorgeous outdoor pool and spa with a rock grotto. It’s also right next to a conservation area so is surrounded by palm trees and greenery.

Outside, there’s an impressive entertaining space with a TV and dining room plus a resort-style pool where you’ll want to spend all your time (Hint: You can see the Disney fireworks on a clear night!). It’s a place where “going to bed” means climbing aboard a pirate ship, or into a castle, or aboard a Rogue One Imperial Walker; where every themed room has a full costume closet; and where the movie room houses a giant Jabba the Hut on one side and a stuffed wall of space suits on the other. There’s also an enclosed pool and hot tub, and a Cinderella carriage propped out front waiting to take imaginations to the ball. Oh, and it’s just 10 minutes from Disney!

This Airbnb That’ll Take You To a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Airbnb

The host calls this home a “live-in movie set,” and it’s no wonder why: From the Millennium Falcon twin bed surrounded by starry night walls to the “Cloud Bedroom” that has an under-the-bed fog machine to make it look like the mattress is floating mid-air, the force is strong all over this 9-bedroom home. Even the hallways are done up right, with faux metallic-plated walls that make you feel like you’re marching through an actual spacecraft. Of course, parents may want to spend a little time on Earth, so common areas like the kitchen and living room feel a little more terrestrial, with leather couches and simple black and white decor. Little Skywalkers will love the playroom, which has a pool table and ping pong table, and families will want to save some time for the outdoor pool, which is screened-in (er, force-fielded?  to protect from Florida’s notorious bugs.  And while you’ll feel “far, far away,” you’re actually only 15 minutes from Disney World.  No wormholes needed.

The Toy Story bedroom is going to blow your mind

If you’re willing to stray from the Disney bubble, staying near Disneyland instead of at Disneyland has its perks: not only will you (probably) save a few bucks and get 10 times the space; but you may also score an abode with enough Disney touches to keep the magic going long after the park closes. How does staying in the Haunted Mansion sound? How about sleeping in a home with beds that double as Star Wars space pods? Sound fun? From princess castles to Pixar pads, here are our favorite Disney-themed Airbnbs near Disneyland.

This “Haunted Mansion” Airbnb

Airbnb

This delightfully spooky bungalow recreates Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride so perfectly that you’ll want to head straight for the attraction (or the new movie!) once you make it through the night. Nods to the ride include a windowless chamber reminiscent of the “stretching room,” where long portraits of un-endangered mortals are not actually what they seem, and morosely-elegant bedrooms with interactive elements that’ll make you feel like you’ve checked into the creepiest (and coolest) hotel ever.

Note: Because of the requisite creepiness, we recommend kids over 8 for this spot, unless you’ve got little spirits who love to be (just a little bit) scared. In any case, the effects can all be turned off with a simple text to the host.

This 9-Bedroom Airbnb with Its Own Ball Pit, plus Star Wars and Fairy Rooms

Fairy bedroom in Airbnb near Disneyland
Airbnb

It’s probably worth a few calls to see who you can round up to split the costs of this amazing Airbnb, which has over-the-top bedrooms for the kids and pristinely-designed bedrooms for the grown-ups. Little Skywalkers will be light saber-fighting over who gets to sleep in the Millennium Falcon bunk bedroom (but, no worries—it’ll fit at least five!), but for those who aren’t into Star Wars, there’s a “Dreamland” bedroom that looks like it was made for the Seven Dwarves. As for entertainment, the kids (and parents) won’t believe their eyes when they see there’s an actual ball pit room inside the home designed to look like a giant, immersive gumball machine. There’s also a foosball table, a ping pong table, and an assortment of games—not to mention a sizable pool and jacuzzi outside. For the grown-ups, there are six serenely (not themed!) decorated bedrooms, a stunning kitchen, a living room with a pool table, and three washer/dryer combos(!).

This Airbnb That’ll Make You Feel Like You’re in the Great Outdoors

Airbnb

If you’ve ever wanted to stay at Disneyland’s Grand Californian resort but don’t want to shell out the $800+ it’ll take for a room big enough to fit your brood, this Airbnb may be the next best thing (maybe even better, since you get so much more space). Located just 6 minutes from Disneyland, this Orange County home has a log cabin theme—with modern perks like a home movie theater, sauna, and steam shower. When kids want their own “great outdoors” to play in, they can run wild in the backyard, which has a swing set, miniature teepee, mini golf range, climbing wall, ping pong table, and a small running creek.

This Pixar-Inspired Airbnb

Airbnb

Looking for something whimsical, this colorful Pixar-themed home will have you going, “Awwww” with every room.  The bedrooms are each themed after a different popular film, including an UP room, with balloons bunched up at the ceiling to whisk little imaginations into the sky; a Toy Story room with a triple bunk bed and a regular bunk bed—plus all the requisite toys positioned around the room; and a Monsters Inc. room that has an actual “bedroom door conveyer belt” at the ceiling that rotates when you push a button. Kids will love that all the rooms have big flat-screen TVs for binge-watching; but the best place to really get a good movie night is in the theater room, which has posh recliner chairs for 10. The theater is also home to an arcade with 5-stand up games and two driving games (all set to free play.)

Outside, there’s mini golf, a swing set, a see-saw, two coin-operated Cars rides for toddlers (that don’t actually require coins); a ping-pong table, and a slide. After all this, you may not even need to go to Disneyland.

This Disneyland Dream Home Where Every Room is a Different “Land”

This house is an immersive ode to all things Disneyland. Its four bedrooms recreate the spirit of the park, with each room themed after a different area: There’s a vintage Mickey room (above) that will make you feel like you’ve stepped foot into a black-and-white cartoon; a “Frontierland” room that feels like a woodsy cabin, with a real, working train that chugs in and out of the room on a track by the ceiling; an “Indiana Jones” room, with genie lamps perched on shelves and old maps clinging to the wall; and an “It’s a small World” room that has the iconic Small World facade painted on one wall and odes to the ride scattered throughout (it also has two bunk beds and a trundle so the room can fit a small world of its own!). Tropes are oxygen in the horror genre. So anytime a film has the ability to turn them inside out—The Cabin in the Woods, A Quiet Place, Emergency—we take note. The latest, called The Blackening and directed by Barbershop’s Tim Story, invites a group of seven friends to spend Juneteenth camping remotely while a serial killer evens a score. A clever mix of comedy and horror, this slasher works to expel the tired trope of the Black character being the first to die in a scary movie.

It’s official: A Freaky Friday sequel is coming—multiple outlets confirmed the movie is in the works after months of rumors

It’s finally happening! 20 years after Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis paired up on screen as the body-swapping mom-and-daughter duo in Freaky Friday, the classic Disney film is getting the sequel it deserves.

The New York Times did a joint interview with the two stars, and they snuck a so-quick-you’ll-miss-it piece of info into the intro: The Freaky Friday sequel fans have been clamoring for is officially in the works at Disney. While the interview didn’t go into the details, Curtis and Lohan did touch on the film’s legacy and the fact that, even after two decades, it still means so much to so many people.

“As I went around the world with Halloween Ends, people wanted to know if there was going to be another Freaky Friday,” Curtis said. “Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.'”

This news comes after both LiLo and Curtis went public to say they were on board with doing a sequel. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon late last year, Lohan let fans know that she and Jamie Lee have been in contact about a Freaky Friday sequel and that she’s excited about the possibility.

“We did speak about it, yeah,” she said. “Let’s just take the fact that I was on set filming at the time, and Jamie Lee Curtis writes, and you just get excited and distracted immediately, so I had to bring myself down to Earth and be like, ‘I’m on set, I have to focus.’ Then she said Freaky Friday 2, and I got more excited.”

Lohan added, “We’d both be into it,” and honestly, that’s all we need to hear. Disney, what are you waiting for?!

Just a month before that, during an appearance on The View, Curtis started building hype for the idea of a Freaky Friday sequel. When co-host Sara Haines asked her if she’d be open to reprising her role and doing another body-swapping movie with Lohan, she said she’s already been in talks with Disney about it.

“I’ve already written to Disney, my friends at Disney. I’m in their new ‘Haunted Mansion’ movie,” she said. “Let me be the grandma. So then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma, who is still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon… And simply, I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I wanna be a helicopter parent in today’s world, as an old lady.”

Lohan’s new Christmas movie just premiered on Netflix, signaling the star’s official return to acting. That means the timing couldn’t be more right for Freaky Friday to make a comeback. And finally, Disney agrees.

Do you dare to spend the night?

Fans of Disnery’s Haunted Mansion ride: Hold on to your mortal souls: This masterfully morose Airbnb replicates the eerie interior of the infamous dark ride so well you’ll wonder where Walt is hiding.

Airbnb

Located in an otherwise unassuming home in a residential neighborhood about 5 miles from Disneyland—the one-story Fullerton bungalow looks like nothing special on the outside (Except, wait! Are those gravestones encircling the garden wall?). Step inside and you’ll be transported to a delightfully spooky world, with the requisite creepy sounds, flickering candles, and dark corridors flanked with eerie pictures.

Airbnb

Anyone who knows the ride will recognize loyal nods to the attraction, including a few floating characters that look remarkably like the ones who hitchhike home with you on the slow-moving park ride; and a”windowless chamber” reminiscent of the “stretching room,” where long portraits of un-endangered mortals are not actually what they seem. The chamber is designed to be a seance room (but for the non-spirit-seeking, there’s “Uno” and “Sorry”, too).

Airbnb

The rental has four bedrooms, each one as spookily foreboding as the next, with mahogany trims and burgundy bedding loaded with pillows. There is an elegantly decorated dining room and living room—and even the bathrooms maintain the macabre-mansion tone, with hidden surprises lurking throughout so you can explore the space as if it is a sinister scavenger hunt (Hint: Make sure to check the kitchen for a special “note” on the counter).

Good to Know: While the home is best experienced with all the ghoulish details intact, the effects can be turned off with a simple text to the host.

Airbnb

When you want to join the world of the living, the sizable backyard is a welcome respite, with a 6-person jacuzzi, a putting green, and a Haunted Mansion-themed cornhole game.

Airbnb

The home’s owner—your “ghost host,” as the HM would say—is an effects industry veteran, having done production design for film, television, amusement parks, and live entertainment for more than 20 years. His Airbnb profile says, “The Haunted Mansion inspired me at such a young age to be in the profession I am to this day.”

It paid off. Reviews posted for the home commend the “meticulous” attention to detail, especially when it comes to how accurately the home replicates the ride.

“I’ve always dreamed of staying over at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland and this is literally as close as you can get!” said one reviewer.

“Our group left the house in the morning headed to Disneyland and rode the Haunted Mansion first thing… we couldn’t believe how much matched EXACTLY between the house and the ride,” said another.

Rates start at $463 per night, with prices higher on weekends and school holidays. Be sure to check it out in time for the new Haunted Mansion movie!
