Christmas Around the World & Holidays of Light at MSI
What began in 1942 as a single tree, is now an international winter wonderland at Christmas Around the World & Holidays of Light. The family is going to be enchanted by the trees and displays that are decorated to represent the rich multicultural heritage of Chicago. The crown jewel will be the floor-to-dome Grand Tree with 30,000 twinkling lights, sparkly ornaments and all of the trimmings. 3. Snow Play at Mountain High Resort
Wouldn’t it be groovy to spend less time on the road and more time playing in the snow? Located just an hour and a half away from DTLA, Mountain High is the perfect place to get away for a fun day of skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. With an incredible snow system that covers 80 percent of the mountain, the resort strives to make the very best conditions consistently possible for its visitors. 4. Snow Play at Snow Valley Mountain Resort
Snow Valley, conveniently located in Running Springs, just 30 minutes from the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, is a super welcoming resort for a day of powdery fun. The resort features SoCal’s only chairlift-serviced sledding area (making it one of the best sledding near LA) and some of the longest runs in the region, making it the perfect place for kids (young and old) to sled to their heart’s content. Snow Valley also features award-winning ski and snowboarding lessons (both half-day and full) for all skill levels. Night skiing is also offered until 8 p.m. most days, weather permitting.

5. Snow Play at Mt. Baldy
Located just 52 miles outside of DTLA, it’s the perfect way to work in some snow play without much road time. The mountain features four chair lifts that provide access to skiing and snowboarding on a wide variety of terrain. For tubing, take the Sugar Pine Chairlift to the Top of the Notch recreation area for snow play at 7,800 feet above sea level. Purchase three-hour tubing sessions (inner tubes and hard shells are provided) and when everyone is finished (and famished), head to the restaurant on site for some burgers and unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains.

7. Snow Play at Snowdrift Snow Tubing Park
For the best snow tubing near me, head up to a little known spot, tucked away in the San Bernardino National Forest near Lake Arrowhead, Snowdrift Snow Tubing Park, SoCal’s oldest and largest snowtubing park. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs are available to riders so there’s definitely something for everyone in the family. Hours are subject to change due to weather and road conditions so be sure to call ahead and check with the park before you head out there.

8. Snow Play at Mount San Jacinto Park
Easily accessible from Palm Springs, this snowy mountain top is only a short ride up the mountain. Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (the world's largest rotating tram car and not for the faint of heart), up and away to the top of Mount San Jacinto Park. Once you reach the top, you can do everything from go snowshoeing and cross-country skiing to sledding and snow camping. There are also two restaurants at the top in case you get hungry.

The center court of the mall is magically transformed into a delightful marketplace filled with pop-up shops that feature extra special goodies and nibbles for everyone on your list. You can also drop a postcard Santa’s Post Office, enjoy a wondrous snow fall, or shake your belly like a bowl full of jelly with some rockin’ live entertainment. Santa’s Village at Irvine Park Railroad
Nov. 25 – Dec. 23: Gather the fam and head to Santa’s Village at the Irvine Park Railroad for some wintry fun. Festive activities include ice fishing, Blizzard Ball, Rudolph Racers, a moon bounce, ornament creation, sipping hot chocolate and eating snacks while taking in the dazzling lights, and of course—a ride on the fabulous Christmas train to see Santa. Nov. 25 – Dec. 30: About an hour’s drive from LA, enter a family-friendly world of nighttime holiday enchantment at Illuminate Silverlakes in the town of Norco. Guests will enjoy mind-blowing light displays strolling the Illumination Trail, Toyland, Electric Forest and Reindeer Grove. After your walk, stop by Santa’s Village for a photo with the man of the hour. Nov. 26 – Jan. 8: Is there any better childhood tradition in LA than Bob Baker’s marionette production of The Nutcracker? We think not! Since 1969, Bob Baker has enchanted audiences with its holiday classic featuring the Sugarplum Fairy and her Promenading Cakes, Waltzing Flowers, The Go-Go’s Nutcracker Band and all wonders beyond the mysterious door. Las Posadas on Olvera St.
Dec. 16 – Dec. 24: As one of LA’s oldest Christmas events, Las Posadas is an extra special experience. Seasonal entertainment commences nightly starting at 5 p.m. and includes a lovely candlelight procession starting at Avila Adobe at 7 p.m. The leaders of the march (who are usually little ones) dress as shepherds, angels, Mary and Joseph, and are followed by dozens of other worshippers. The procession strolls up and down Olvera Street singing songs in English and Spanish. They make stops at stores along the way requesting shelter but will be denied until they are eventually admitted and receive complimentary champurrado, pan dulce, and pinatas bursting in celebration.
Dec. 19: This free event features conductor Grant Gershon, 20 singers from the Los Angeles Master Chorale, a piano, and you! In an evening filled with merriment, Angelenos are invited to sing everyone’s favorite songs for the holidays. Song booklets will be provided, and the event runs about 30 min.
Dec. 20, 21 & Dec. 22: Conductor David Newman joins the Angeles Chorale for a very special screening of this beloved holiday classic. John Williams’ charming and delightful score will be performed live to picture bringing the hilarious antics of a young boy and two bungling thieves to life.

4. Presidio Christmas Tree Lighting
Dec. 2: Since 1991, the now 55-foot-tall Norfolk Island pine in the Presidio has glowed with lights starting on the first Friday evening in December. The tradition of tree lighting at the former US Army base began even earlier, in 1957, when families who lived and worked in the Presidio came by to light the tree and kick off the holiday season. Holiday Lights continued when the Presidio opened its gates to all as a national park 27 years ago. Event details.
5. Civic Center Tree Lighting
Dec. 7: The annual Civic Center Plaza Tree Lighting event returns December 7, 4-7pm! Add this fun, free, family-friendly event to your holiday calendar! Early Dec.-New Year: The best-lit neighborhood in the Bay is in Alameda, on the 3200 block of Thompson Ave. Every year, the street puts on a dazzling display that plugs directly into the spirit of the season. 20. Mill Valley Winterfest
Nov. 26-Dec. 16: Winterfest is back for 2022 with a giant rainbow slide, a jump house, games, and of course, Santa. The festivities kick off Friday, Nov. 26th with the Winterfest Holiday Hunt, a three-week, scavenger hunt-style contest at more than 30 businesses throughout Mill Valley. The contest centers around Blue Stars, which business owners will place in storefront windows or inside their businesses. Kids accompanied by a parent will take photos of blue stars of at least eight participating businesses and will be entered in a raffle for one of 20 $40 gift cards to participating businesses. 21. Sausalito Lighted Boat Parade & Fireworks
Dec. 10: Watch a magical parade of lighted boats float by the Sausalito waterfront in this free annual event. Come for the festive flotilla, but stay for the fireworks, which start once all the boats have begun their journey. Parking can be tricky, so consider public transport, and get there early for a good spot. Event details.

With Christmas around the corner, the tree is up and holiday music is being cued up. A sure sign the season is in full swing. Atlanta is full of holiday cheer throughout all of December and into the New Year. From dazzling light shows to ice skating to Santa meet-cutes, there is something for everyone to enjoy during the winter season. But if you’re coming up short for things to do in Atlanta on Christmas Day, check out these festivities that will take you beyond the base of the Christmas tree.

1. Catch Favorite Holiday Flick on Big Screen
What better way to enjoy the holiday season than to watch your favorite classic holiday movie? There will be showings on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at Regal Cinemas all over the Atlanta metro area. The tickets are just $5 and if you are a Regal Crown Member so are a small popcorn and drink combo.

2. See Mega-Watt Light Shows
Bundle up and flip the switch on some electrifying lighting displays around Atlanta. If you’re looking for an evening outing that will amaze the entire family, Christmas Day is a great time to head out in search of both neighborhood light displays and larger commercial ones too. Many neighborhood displays put on extra-specials show on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and then again on New Year's. And when it comes to drive-through displays and other local programs that are totally lit, many are open on Christmas Day, like Garden Lights, Holiday Nights at Atlanta Botanical Garden, Reindeer Road World of Illumination at Six Flags, and ATL Holiday lights.
Santa may not be gracing the night sky on Christmas, but you can soar above Atlanta in the SkyView ferris wheel. With twinkling city lights below mixed in with holiday decorations downtown, the bird's eye view is the best view. And great news! Each gondola on the wheel is climate controlled, so you won't need to plan for frostbite.
Even if they didn't get a new set of wheels for Christmas, you'll have some happy elves if you load them up and go for a ride on their old wheels, new scooters, or even hovercraft. If you need a new bike trail to try, check out of our list family-friendly bike paths riders of all ages can handle.

6. Take the Kids out for a Hike
Atlanta weather can run hot or cold at Christmas, so keep Georgia’s State Parks in mind if we land on a sunny and unseasonably warm Christmas day. Trails abound at Sweetwater Creek State Park, and you can start working on your resolutions by hiking the first (little, little) leg of the Appalachian Trail at Amicalola State Park. Need some more inspiration? Here are some more of our favorite state parks near Atlanta. And if you don’t want to venture much further than the Perimeter, you can enjoy exploring miles of trails along the Chattahoochee, a National Parks Service-run land.

After a couple of quiet years, Seattle is buzzing again this holiday season with returning and new favorite holiday events to explore. In fact, with so many things to do in downtown Seattle, you and the kids don’t need to go anywhere else to find (or spread) winter cheer. Our list (don’t worry, we checked it twice) includes everything from Santa sightings and steamy cups of hot cocoa paired with carolers to festive music, dancing nutcrackers, and a lot more. So get out your calendar, it’s time to schedule the Seattle Christmas events you really want to make time for this season.
Seattle holiday events you won’t want to miss
Kringle's Filling Station
Kringle's Filling Station
Part arcade, part neighborhood hangout, Kringle's Filling Station is perfect for families with older children. This pop-up event has set up shop along Aurora Ave. at an old gas station. Legend has it that the Kringle Family has come to offer hot chocolate out of the old gas tanks (don't worry, it's completely safe and sanitary!), let guests play unlimited rounds of "Ski-Ball", play "Reindeer Games" or sing holiday karaoke. You even have exclusive access to the Kringles' private office. Add-ons include the brand-new Speedway Slot Cars and photo booth aboard Santa's new-and-improved sleigh (you'll have to see it to believe it).
Insider Tip: Santa's scheduled to visit the Filling Station December 1, 9, 16 and 22. And Krampus will be making an appearance on December 20 and 21.

We are beyond thrilled to see that the annual Gingerbread Village is back at the Sheraton Grand Seattle this year. If you've never been or if it has been a while, this really is a must-see event. Now in its 28th year, the event matches Seattle's top architecture firms, master builders, and the Sheraton Grand Seattle's culinary teams to create amazing works of edible art. This year's theme is focusing on Buzz Lightyear, but don't be surprised if a few other Toy Story characters show up too. Some of the gingerbread creations have great names like "Courage Against Zurg," "The Future is Bright," and of course, "To Infinity and Beyond!" While the exhibit is free, donations will be gladly accepted to go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDRF).

Seattle Center is doing it up for the holidays starting the day after Thanksgiving and running through the New Year. If you're looking for free and affordable holiday activities and entertainment, head to the heart of the city. Kids can marvel as a miniature locomotive makes it way through a turn-of-the-century village inside the Armory and complete a scavenger hunt while they're at it (you'll find sheets at the train station). Follow it up with a weekend ice sculpting demonstration or a live performance at the Armory (hint: we're looking forward to the School of Rock Seattle performance on December 10, SANCA's youth performers on December 17, and the KlezKids performance on the 24th) before grabbing something tasty for dinner. Wander through the Campus Luminata light display and end at the International Fountain where things are always hopping before heading home.
Holiday highlight: Take a trip to the top of the Space Needle to grab a picture with jolly old St. Nick in his glass sleigh. Seeing the city's Christmas lights below are totally worth the trip. As for New Year's Eve, plan an evening of music at Seattle Center, or if your kids won't last that long, plan to spend the day at the Seattle Children's Museum for their Winter Market Event featuring a "Noon Year's Eve" pj party and a sock skating rink.
While you're at Seattle Center, be sure to swing into Chihuly Garden and Glass to see Winter Brilliance. The display features over 700 hand-blown glass sculptures and combines glass art, video projection technology, and music for a full-sensory experience. One of the newest Seattle Christmas events, it celebrates the magic of the season in a whole new way. Catch the show in Gallery 1 into the new year when you visit.
With lavish sets and costumes designed by Ian Falconer (of Olivia fame) and the ever-mesmerizing choreography of Balanchine, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker is a forever favorite for many Seattle families. This full-length show is best suited for school-aged kids, but theatergoers of all ages will be glued to their seats for the entire two-plus hour show, basking in the care and craftsmanship of this delightful production. The 40-foot-tall Christmas tree, snow flurries on stage and Mother Ginger’s magical skirt (it weighs more than 60 pounds!) are all part of what makes this production one of the best around.
Insider Tip: A sensory-friendly performance is scheduled for December 21 at 2 p.m.
Another theater production you won't want to miss is SCT's latest. Even the tiniest theater lovers will be able to enjoy this holiday show, starring their favorite clumsy Bear, Paddington. With his telltale red hat and blue coat, they’ll fall for Paddington’s innocent antics as he works to save Christmas from being a total disaster. It all starts out simply enough—with Paddington and Mrs. Bird making the holiday marmalade (for Paddington’s sandwiches, of course). But oops!—they’ve run out of sugar. But one of our absolute favorite winter activities is ice skating at rinks that either pop up seasonally or stick around year round. These spots often have other fun features such as amazing light displays, holiday shopping for unique gifts, and snowy play spaces for kids. Are you new to skating and nervous to hit the ice? Fortunately, these rinks are ready to accommodate all skill levels.
The Enchant forest is a breathtaking trail through millions of shimmery holiday lights on ice. After you finish gliding through the ice trail, take the kids to meet Santa, check out the giant light maze, and play in the kids' play place. For parents, end the adventure with a little shopping in the Christmas market. They also have cubbies available for storage. And if parents aren't skating, they can hang out at the nearby bar and still keep an eye on the kiddos.
This DC ice skating rink boasts the "best backdrop." Ice skate among the grand architecture of national museums and contemporary large-scale sculptures in the Sculpture Garden Ice Rink. Through March 5, reserve your ticket that grants you two 45-minute skate sessions. When you've had your fill of icy temperatures and skating, head to the Pavilion Cafe for a warm drink, bowl of soup, or other tasty treat. This winter, Washington Harbour Ice Rink morphs from fountain to ice skating rink until mid-March. Twirl and swirl in hour-and-a-half increments before the rink is closed for a quick cleaning and refresh before the next session. Rent a penguin for little skaters who aren't yet steady on their blades.
4. Ice & Lights: The Winter Village at Cameron Run
Cameron Run Regional Park has transformed itself into a magical winter village, complete with light displays, fire pits, a market filled with holiday treats, and an ice skating rink. Through Jan. 1, admission includes both the village and one hour of skating. From Jan. 7 through Feb. 26, only the ice rink will remain and it will be open on weekends and holidays only. While admission to the village only can be purchased at the door, skating tickets must be purchased online in advance. Skating tickets are non-refundable but can be changed to another date and time before your scheduled session.
