Glamping offers all the outdoorsy fun of camping with the comforts of home

Pack your bags for a glamping trip where connecting as a family is a breeze. Yep, “glamorous camping” is really a thing—and it’s so, so fun. Lock arms with Mother Nature while you camp in style with special touches like cozy beds, stocked kitchens, and even air conditioning. From sleeping in a real treehouse to glammin’ it up it in a cabin in the woods, you won’t have to twist anyone’s arm to get them out in the fresh air.

Big Cedar Lodge | Missouri Ozark Mountains

Big Cedar Lodge

This spot is a bit of a hike from Chicago, but it's so great we felt it was worth a share—plus, a relaxing road trip might be just what you need. Camp Long Creek at Big Cedar Lodge invites guests to get their glamp on near Missouri's Ozark Mountains with luxury glamping tents, camp huts, and camp cabins. The definitely-not-roughing-it amenities include beach access, a pool, a vintage airstream trailer that serves food & drinks, and a must-have s'mores kit upon arrival. They also have nightly programming for families that include scavenger hunts and guided adventures along the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail.

Fuller’s Resort and Campground on Clear Lake | Buchanan, MI

This awesome glampsite is less than an hour and a half outside of Chicago for those who need to get away from it all, and fast! With various glamping options from an authentic log cabin to major luxe living in the cottages that include beds, bathrooms with showers, full kitchens, cable TV, and air conditioning, you can pick your family’s level of outdoorsy-ness. Although the log cabin doesn’t have a kitchen or bathroom like in 1835 when it was built, it’s the most popular rental onsite so grab it while you can.

Glampsite Bonus: While there is a ton to do in the surrounding area, stay put and enjoy the waterfront on the beach at Fuller’s. They can rent you anything from sailboats to canoes to kayaks and each one comes with life jackets, so you don’t have to schlep your own.

Only an hour and a half northwest of Chicago, the farm-stay program will have your kids picking eggs, feeding pigs, and milking goats. The accommodations are a cross between a log cabin and a classic tent with running water and an insulated chest that functions as a refrigerator. You’ll have to fend without electricity during your visit but with so many fun farm-centric activities, we’re guessing your kids won’t even notice.

Glampsite Bonus: Owners David and Susan Cleverdon will arrange a delicious pizza night during each stay. You’ll make and bake your own pizzas and cook them on the farm’s stove or outdoor grill.

Smokey Hollow Campground | Lodi, WI

Smokey Hollow Campground offers a variety of glampy accommodations, but we have to recommend the Conestoga Wagon because it just sounds so cool and old-timey. The wagons have air-conditioning units, a DVD player, a kitchenette, a picnic table, a charcoal grill, and a deck. You do have to bring your own linens and kitchen supplies, but every good camper is always prepared, so that shouldn’t be a problem for you!

Glampsite Bonus: If a Conestoga wagon is too 1800s for your family, check out Smokey Hollow’s rustic yurts, cabins, or even one of their rock-star coach buses for a truly fabulous glamping experience.

baby and mother

After many years of feeling drained as a partner and a mom, I decided to take my life back and stop going through the motions.

At some point, I lost a bit of myself along the way of raising my children.

I let go of my passions and only focused on what made my children happy. And the funny thing is, I didn’t even know it.

Years later, upon deep reflection, I realized and recognized the loss I was feeling.

I let go of me.

I stopped living for me and only woke up each day wondering how to make the lives of the people around me more fulfilled.

I let go of me.

I started to become a shell of a person simply going through the motions rather than living life each day. Even before the pandemic, I felt I was living day after day the same life over and over again.

I let go of me.

I didn’t wake up refreshed, ready to take on the day, rather I was tirelessly traipsing through the day with little to no emotion.

I let go of me.

I was trapped inside my own shell, knowing the walls to escape could be broken down, but no one could reach in and help me.

I had to emerge on my own.

And that, my friends, is exactly what I did.

I reached deep into my soul and pulled out the old wounds and dealt with them face to face.

I slowly started to find me.

I gently traveled to the parts that I had been missing, brushed myself off while being wrapped in a warm embrace, and invited myself back in again.

I slowly started to find me again.

I essentially stopped living life going through the motions.

I started living and I let go of the guilt.

I let go of the looming thoughts that burdened me. I stopped feeling selfish for the times I was making myself happy.

I slowly started to find me again.

I started living for my family as a whole.

Not just living for my husband. Not just going about my day for my children. But for me also. For the first time, I was living for all of us collectively.

I slowly started to find me again.

Life has not changed drastically, but how I look at my life has been altered.

Each day I am presented with decisions to make and I am living within the decisions, feeling each and every part of the day.

I am not going through the motions of filling a void in the hollow of the shell that once existed.

And oh, what a blessing it has been.

I found me!

Want to plan a vacation that combines the beauty of fall with the spookiness of Halloween? Visit one of these five small towns, located across the U.S.

1. Sleepy Hollow, NY: Yes, Sleepy Holly is a real place! In Sleepy Hollow, New York, families can tour Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and take a haunted hayride with sightings of the Headless Horseman. The most popular attraction, however, is Horseman’s Hollow. Best for families with tweens and teens, this experience is so realistic that you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped inside the pages of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Be sure to visit The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze in nearby Croton-on-Hudson, too.

2. Savannah, GA: This southern city is especially beautiful in the fall, but that’s not the only reason families flock to Savannah come September and October. Savannah is a mysterious town, previously plagued by Yellow Fever, the Seige of Savannah during the Civil War, and the Savannah Fire of 1820. Halloween happenings include haunted houses and attractions and dozens of ghost tours. We recommend the Ghosts & Gravestones Tour, a trolley tour that stops at the some of the area’s most haunted landmarks.

3. Salem, MA: Have kids who love Hocus Pocus? Take them to a real-life version of the movie in Salem, Massachusetts. It was here that hundreds of people were accused of witchcraft between 1692 and 1693, some of them executed. Today, visitors can tour the Salem With Museum or embark on a ghost tour with Bewitched After Dark Salem Tours. The House of Seven Gables is also a must; the book of the same name, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is said to have been inspired by a witch’s curse on the writer’s own family.

4. Gettysburg, PA: A storied Civil War town, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is notoriously haunted. Ask the staff at any hotel, shop or even restaurant if they’ve witnessed paranormal activity and chances are, they’ll have a ghost story for you. Take the Ghosts of Gettysburg Candlelight Walking Tour to learn about the area’s spooky history. Bonus: Hersheypark is an hour away and celebrates the season with Hersheypark in the Dark.

5. Estes Park, CO: Estes Park, Colorado, is a charming town in the foothills of Rocky Mountain National Park. The centerpiece of Estes Park—The Stanley Hotel—is what makes this a town worth visiting at Halloween, particularly if you have tweens and teens. It was in this hotel that Stephen King experienced a nightmare so haunting, he was inspired to write a little something called The Shining. The historic hotel is undoubtedly haunted, with guests regularly reporting paranormal activity (particularly in room 217, where Stephen King stayed). Take a guided tour of The Stanley, or book a stay… if you dare.
