Read on for amazing meal planning ideas so you can cut down on the time in the kitchen and spend more time where it counts: with your family.

Everything you need to know to start your eco-friendly lifestyle here in Los Angeles

This guide is a great starting point for anyone looking to live greener in LA. From zero-waste refill stations nearby to plant-forward dining, here are all the spots to shop and when you want to be eco-conscience in Los Angeles.

What Is a Zero-Waste Refill Station?

A zero-waste refill station is a place (sometimes you can find them a pop-up or at a farmer’s market) where you can buy household goods, like laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, cleaners and various household goods, as well as baby, pet and personal goods—almost anything!—and use your own packaging. Typically refills are sold by volume—your jar or container is weighed before getting filled (tare), then weighed again after it’s been filled up—the weight of the container is deducted from the total weight of the refill.

How to Shop at a Zero-Waste Refill Station

It may sound intimidating but shopping at a zero-waste refill station is easy. Simply bring whatever container you want to store your product, choose your product and get it filled up! The best part? If you don’t have a container, you can purchase a jar or container at the shop—and now you have a container that you can reuse once it’s empty. While living a 100% eco-friendly life would be amazing, this is a way to take step in the right eco-friendly direction.

Plant-Based Restaurants to Eat at in LA with Kids

Café Gratitude: Plant-based pioneer Café Gratitude has been delivering quality, farm-to-table meals to Angelenos since 2004. And while there's nothing better than dining in and ordering their "I am adorable" almond butter banana wrap for the kids, and the "I am nourished" bowl for yourself (a breakfast wrap that will have you coming back day-after-day), you can also get your vegan fix at home with their deliverable meals. Choose from 3-day or 6-day meals plans; free delivery is available within select areas of Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County.

Gracias Madre: This no-brainer dining spot has won over vegans and non-vegans alike all over Los Angeles (and now has an outpost in Newport Beach for those south of the LA border). Our favorite weekend brunch go-tos? Jackfruit Carnitas Tacos with their signature margarita of course. And for the kids? The cinnamon oat pancakes or the french toast (of course).

Flower Burger: Unwilling to give up those those burger cravings but want to try swapping a meal or two every so often? Flower Burger serves up not only plant-based burgers that are satisfying to eat, the Italian-based brand also serves up Instagram-worthy burgers (picture burgers that have been rainbow-ized) utilizing 100% natural and vegan ingredients.

Monty’s Good Burger: Now with 5 locations, this diner-esque plant-based burger joint hits all the nostalgic feels for carnivores who care about the environment and want a mouthwatering burger. Their newest location, across from the Culver Steps, serves up their classics (don't forget to get the shake!) as well as their new-to-the-menu, Charlie's Chicken Sandwich.

Sage Plant-Based Bistro: Another favorite vegan spot to go, their extensive kid's menu will win over the under 12 set in no time—what's not to love about pancakes, burritos, french toast and grilled cheese sandwiches? For the parents, nothing beats their cauliflower wings or their tacos—you'll never miss an animal-based product here. And don't forget to order their vegan ice-cream—it's worth saving room for.

Hammer and Jacks

So much more than a toy store, and owned by Jillian Sevick, Hammer and Jacks' adorable indoor playspace has become a vital community hub in the Foster-Powell neighborhood over the past four years. From lactation support groups and kindie music concerts, to storytimes in Spanish and birthday parties, there's always been something happening. Mimi's Fresh Tees & PDX Love Over Hate

Mimi's Fresh Tees
Kamelah Adams, referred to as Mimi by close friends and family, is a NE Portland Ore. native. If you are looking for some new threads for the family, you want to put these hoodies and tees on your "must buy" list. Founded in January 2018, Mimi’s Fresh Tees is a Portland-based t-shirt company that amplifies tough social justice conversations and allows people to wear their truth. Motivated by systemic racism her Black son experienced in the education system, owner and designer Kamelah Adams wanted to create a product that brought conversations around discrimination out into the open, in a quick and straightforward way. She started designing t-shirts as away for people to take a stand, break the silence and start a dialogue by wearing their truth.

Green Bean Books

Jennifer Green is the owner of this whimsical red-painted children's bookstore in the beloved Alberta Arts District. Beyond the hand-picked selection of children's books and the big green reading couch at the center of the store, there was the community of families that met weekly for multilingual story-times, craft sessions, and music circles. While all of that has changed since COVID-19 hit, this business is still bustling. She created an easy-to-use online ordering system, and the small team of booksellers is available daily by phone for book recommendations and ordering. With the ability to order just about any book through their distributors, including adult books, they encourage customers to pick up the phone and purchase a book if they don't feel safe coming is. However they are excited to announce that the shop is open again! They have put together a list of rules, so make sure to check for the changing requirements. Clean and safe curbside pick-up is available as well.

Raving Artists Tattoos

via Raving Artist

Raving Artist is an LGBTQ, Woman-Owned tattoo parlor offering body art in a bright, fun and friendly setting. Portland parents love their tattoos, and now you can enjoy getting one in a studio with inviting and colorful lighting as well as music played to your taste! Courtney Castman created her studio with the intention of moving away from darker settings that play heavy  metal music to set the mood and opted for developing an environment that is modern, relaxing, and upbeat. While she joyfully creates any tattoo her clients request, her love for Oregon and nature comes through in the pieces she creates which primarily consist of flowers, foliage and stunning landscapes you can find throughout the state. Castman has won favor among local moms because of her cool environment, awesome work ethic and dedication to offering her customers the perfect amount of conversation (or quiet) while they are under her needle.

Signs of Justice

Signs of Justice

Jameesa Oakley and her husband already had a sign printing business, but when Trump was elected, they decided to use their vocation to impact social change. Their online shop now features striking yard signs, bumper stickers, and apparel featuring progressive statements on a range of issues, available for bulk order. Red Tricycle asked the Oakleys what they loves about what they do. "Our graphics bring progressive truths to the mainstream," Jameesa says. "The narrative in America is changing and we believe we played a small role." During the pandemic, the Oakleys have encountered supply chain issues and have had to use their creativity to overcome them. "It tested our resolve," the Oakleys say. "We’re stronger because of it."After the George Floyd murder tapes were released, demand increased more than Signs of Justice could have ever expected, and orders were temporarily delayed. "We couldn’t believe how kind and patient most people were. Love is winning."

Flouriche Preschool

With over 24 years of experience working with children, Paula Rogers founded Reggio-inspired Flouriche preschool with the intention to combine the best of three guiding principles for developing minds: flourish, nourish, and niche. “The best part is the laughter and natural compassion that I am privileged to witness every day,” Rogers says. During the pandemic, the community has had to adjust to many changes designed to keep kids safe, from daily health checks to rotating mealtimes in order to reduce the number of children at the table. They’ve also begun incorporating Zoom circle times to include children who are unable to come to Flouriche, in order to help children feel connected. Flouriche stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement that is resounding all over the world, and has started a Facebook group for discussion around the history of racism. Rogers says she loves idea sharing and would love to connect with other diverse preschools in Portland, as well as develop a scholarship program for children who want to attend Flouriche but may not be able to afford it.

Honeybee Lemonade Syrups

Andrea Wade originally served Honeybee Lemonade Syrups with sparkling water from the window of a West African & Caribbean fusion food cart. In 2019, her handmade artisan syrups hit the shelves, free from preservatives, artificial flavors, and sweeteners, and with a devoted following. With flavors like Mango Coconut Jasmine, Strawberry Raspberry Rhubarb Lime, and Peach Lychee, these shelf-stable syrups are made from whole fruit and can be used to flavor beverages, yogurt, as an ice cream topping, and much more. Wade's 17-year-old daughter helps with the daily operations of the business. When the pandemic hit, the mother-daughter team began offering no-contact door drop delivery and using their creativity to drive sales, much of which plummeted during the pandemic due to the cancellation of many spring and summer vending events. Honeybee Lemonade Syrups currently offers online orders and can be picked up in New Seasons Market and Market of Choice. Reflecting on the challenges she experienced in starting her business, Wade shares that, "...there is still a tremendous amount of work to do to dismantle systemic barriers for Black business that often keep us out. It is my hope that we will continue to work in solidarity because Black Businesses Matter!"

Fat Cupcake

Fat Cupcake

Anjelica Otness started Fat Cupcake for good reasons: she has always loved eating dessert, she enjoys the creativity of decorating cupcakes, and she wanted to create an environment where people feel loved, welcome, and known. “I love sharing the joy of a cupcake and celebrating exciting life events or being there when things are challenging,” Otness says. She jokes, “It's also a perk to be able to eat a treat whenever you want." In the wake of the pandemic, Fat Cupcake has added extra safety precautions to prioritize team members’ and guests’ health and safety. And with the world’s increased support for the Black Lives Matter movement, Otness says they’ve seen a tremendous amount of support from the local community in placing orders, coming in for the first time, and promoting Fat Cupcake.

With the help of his parents, he was able to bring them all together in this entertaining book. You can follow Orion on Instagram @rocketshipsquid to see what he's up to next (hint: he's working on a second book) and buy his science-inspired merch too.

Local Yokels
When local farmer’s markets shut down due to the pandemic, ag-heads Amber and Damon had a brilliant idea, and another Black-owned business in Seattle was born. They would bridge the gap by working with local farms to deliver fresh produce and other products directly to doorsteps in Seattle. Voila! Local Yokels was born. With a focus on sustainability, be it environmental or economic, families can feel good about using this service to get groceries, meats, gift baskets, self-care products, and more delivered. Our suggestion? Their subscription boxes make it easy to always have the staples on hand so you can skip the store on those unavoidably busy days.

Want to give back this holiday season? We rounded up 25 organizations in Chicago where your entire family can volunteer—and make a difference

Let’s face it, most kids probably think of this time of year as the season of “getting”—getting candy, getting gifts, getting visitors. If you are looking for ways to change the narrative to a holiday season of “giving,” and to teach children lessons in gratitude and empathy, there’s no better opportunity than having them witness first-hand the needs of others. Chicago is full of people in need. From supporting kids in the hospital to helping provide food to local shelters to showing love to the city’s furry friends to doing their part to protect the environment, we’ve rounded up some organizations where your entire family can put in some volunteer hours and reap the spiritual rewards. It’s proof that there is no shortness of opportunities to lend a hand.

Portland Christmas tree farms are opening soon. Make your U-cut plans now, while you still can

Bring the magic of the season into your household with the scent of fresh pine and hard work. There’s no better way to deck your halls than with a U-cut tree from one of the best Portland Christmas tree farms around (although if we’re honest, a trip to see the Christmas Ships runs a close second). Whether it’s your first time in the fields, or you and the kids are old pros, make plans soon—these trees don’t stick around for long. Tips For a Successful U-Cut Christmas Tree Experience

If you usually get your tree from a lot but are ready to head out into the field, we’ve got a few tips for you:

1. Leave the compact car at home and instead bring the family truck or SUV to accommodate your freshly chopped tree. Bring a tarp, old sheet or blanket to put in the trunk to catch the needles and sap. You can also put the sheet to use on the roof of your car if you are going to tie it down.

2. Most farms have some rope or twine but it never hurts to bring your own to make sure you can tie it down securely before you head home. Even if it costs extra, spring for the wrapping on-site if the farm offers this service.

3. Bring snacks and water. Cutting down your own tree is some serious sweaty business, so be sure to eat and stay hydrated (for both kids and adults).

4. The farms usually provide a small hand saw for your use. If you have a better tool at home, bring it.

5. Charge those phones and cameras because you’re going to want to capture this family tradition.

Good to Know: The annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program begins the day after Christmas, Dec. 26, through Jan. 23, and features 17 drop-off locations available to San Diego city residents. Save our handy guide for your Christmas tree pick up schedule, where to drop off and how you can even recycle those Christmas lights.
