I want my kids to know that I worked hard to make sure that they got that one thing on their list they really wanted.

Like many, Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. It got especially magical after I had kids. I can’t wait to see their little faces light up on Christmas morning with delight as they burst out of their bedrooms with anticipation to see if Santa actually came.

You know, the man in red with the jolly disposition and the mystical elves that make toys from scratch and report back to the North Pole every night fueled by “cheer.” The man who somehow manages to make it across the entire world in one night and lives solely off of milk and cookies and Christmas spirit.

I love Santa. I love the idea of Santa. And I love that my kids think that Santa is magic. It adds an extra element to Christmas that fills them (and me) with excitement every year. What I refuse to play into is that Santa shows up with the expensive, hard-to-find gifts, while mom and dad bring things like socks and PJs.

The mere concept of a loving Santa and his reindeer helpers is one that I think brings hope and enchantment to kids’ lives during the holidays. After all, if we can get them to believe that there is a person in this world who flies with wingless, hoofed animals (one of which has a light bulb on his face), lives in a hidden land that you can’t find on a map, and has an entire staff of tiny, pointy-eared people who have not yet managed to go on strike for being forced into overtime in dangerous conditions like the freezing cold… well, I think we’ve done our jobs.

Isn’t that enough?

I work my butt off every year to make sure my kids have a good Christmas. To make sure that they are delivered just as many presents as their friends and that they aren’t missing any “hot items” they desperately asked for.

Related: Behind Every Magical Holiday Moment Is an Exhausted Mom

For a month straight, I live off of coffee and evergreen fumes trying to scrape together pennies to bring my little ones the most joy I can on the mind-blowing morning called Christmas. I become a gift ninja: assembling, wrapping, and hiding. On Christmas Eve, I morph into a woman who doesn’t need sleep or hydration to survive and spend hours setting up an entire display for my kids to enjoy when they wake up at the crack of dawn because… SANTA!

Did I mention I love Christmas? I really do.

It’s all worth it. It is. But I will be damned if I am going to let the big guy in the red suit take all of the credit for the gift that I had to fist-fight someone over in Target because it was the last one on the shelf. NO. WAY.

I want my kids to one day replicate the magic of Christmas in their own homes every year. But I also want them to appreciate the season for what matters. Gifts are great. Getting gifts as a kid is one of the most exciting parts of Christmas, but plenty of kids do not get gifts—and if they do, they may not be as cool, high-tech, or expensive as some of the ones my kids have received over the years.

How do I explain to them that some kids (the ones who really need the miracle) don’t get what is on their list from a man who theoretically brings presents to all kids who are good? Do I tell them those kids are bad? What makes those kids less deserving? Nothing.

And how do I explain that if we have had a year when money is tight, Santa suddenly doesn’t have the “disposable income” to supply the mountain of gifts he had in recent years? I can’t. Not without them losing some faith in the magic of the holiday.

Plus, I’m trying to raise responsible and grateful humans who understand the value of material things and what it takes to make and spend money. Christmas happens to throw all of that out the window for the weeks leading up to the big day and at least a good month after.

I want my kids to know that I worked hard to make sure that they got that one thing on their list they really wanted. That even though I might have missed a few important sports games or school events, it’s because I was working—working to make sure we have a roof over our heads, that our bills got paid, and also so that I could do things like buy them that gaming system they’d been pining for.

I want my kids to understand that Christmas is magical and that there are two people who make it so: Santa and me.

But in taking credit for the extra-special gifts, I have a better explanation for the other kids who may not get the same number or types of presents as they do and why our Christmas haul may vary from year to year. Plus, I don’t have to stress about remembering which gifts came from Santa and which didn’t when something doesn’t work correctly and I have to come up with some outlandish story about how I’m going to phone into the North Pole to get a replacement.

If you ask me, the magic of Santa lies in my kids’ believing: believing that there is someone watching them, rooting for them, and willing to dazzle them with his abilities every year because he loves them. He does it all in one night because he’s spectacular. And he brings things they will love and play with for the whole year (hopefully).

But the big-ticket stuff—the gift that they requested for months, the one that cost a small fortune and will bring the biggest smile and the most thanks? That one comes from Mom. After all, Santa has a group of elves to do his bidding—I’m all on my own.

Hydration, but make it cute. The best water bottles are here to help you glow.

The New Year is right around the corner. And while that often means the dreaded “r” word (resolutions), we’re not interested in pressuring anyone into starting the new year with any kind of guilt. We know you already have a lot on your plate. If you’re not making any resolutions, then we fully support that! Oh, and if you are? Great! Just assume we totally support you. And what’s more supportive than reminding you to take care of yourself? Step 1: hydrate.

It’s so easy to forget to drink water. Considering everything going on, sticking to the old “8 Glasses a Day” rule is usually the last thing we think about. Part of that has to do with the fact that by the time we actually feel thirsty, we’re already mildly dehydrated. Ideally, we’d be drinking enough water to prevent feeling thirsty in the first place. If we’re truly hydrated, our bodies don’t need to signal our brains to let us know it’s time to start sipping because we’re already ahead of the game. On the other hand, thirst isn’t the only indication of dehydration. Mild headaches, fatigue, even feeling cranky or anxious can all be associated with lacking adequate hydration.

So, in order to keep you feeling your best, energized, and hydrated, we’re going to make it as easy as possible. We’ve put together a round up of some of the cutest, most convenient, and downright easy to use water bottles out there. That way, it’ll be a little easier to remember to keep that water flowing and keep you flowing!

While there is no actual cure for the common cold, there’s plenty you can do to ease your symptoms. Before you reach for that cold medicine, however, the best remedy might simply be soup—specifically, chicken noodle soup.

One dietitian explains exactly how chicken soup can help fight colds: “Studies have shown that a hearty bowl of chicken noodle soup may help clear nasal congestion and ease cold symptoms,” said Sandy Allonen, a clinical dietitian at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. “It’s all about the ingredients.”

Besides the obvious nutritional benefits of carrots, celery, and even onions and chicken, chicken noodle soup has some other healthy tricks up its sleeve. As Allonen explains, the warm broth can soothe a sore throat and provide hydration, the steam can help clear your nose, the salt can stimulate your tastebuds (encouraging you to eat more even when food tastes bland), and even the chicken can help.

“Chicken is high in tryptophan, which helps your body produce serotonin that can enhance your mood and give you the feeling of ‘comfort’ that helps make chicken noodle soup a true comfort food,” Allonen said. With all the bugs going around these days, it’s time to put the soup on.

Adulting isn’t easy, especially the school morning grind. Between packing lunches, hunting down homework and making sure shoes match every single day, it’s no wonder we’re barely keeping it together. When it’s time for a breather, Stonyfield has launched the Breakbox Collection, lunchboxes for parents that encourage a little self-care!

Three themed lunchboxes are available to buy online now, with some hilarious goodies:

  • Adult Time Out: Even adults need a time out once-in-a-while, but they’re more fun as an adult… Includes everything parents need to take a load off after (another) long day: an organic mixer, Unreal Candy, Simple Mills and Forager Chips
  • You Got This: Meant to reassure parents that they’re doing an amazing job and give permission to pat themselves on the back; includes a trophy, gold star stickers, a magnet family organizer for the fridge, a “You Got This” mug – and coffee + a hydration bottle to keep them going along the way
  • Hide in My Closet: For those days when you just want to hide out from everyone in your house and squeeze in some much-needed self-care; includes a candle, Bliss Bright Idea under-eye patches, a jade roller, an eye mask and a Swear notebook to let out all your frustrations

They’re cute, but also charitable! Stonyfield is donating 100% of the purchase price ($50 each) to No Kid Hungry. And inside each Breakbox, you’ll find a packed note with a note of wisdom from parents across the country.

If you need a little extra help to make it to school day downtime, we’ve got you. Whether it’s breakfast inspo or delegating some of the morning tasks, cutting down the craziness is totally doable!

20 Store-Bought Breakfasts That Make Mornings a Cinch

Our family just returned from our annual week at the Jersey Shore. Nothing recharges us like a day on the beach, listening to the rhythmic sound of the waves, breathing the salty air, and soaking up Vitamin D. However, it’s hard to ignore the shocking headlines about our fragile oceans that are increasingly in peril. So, what can our family do to help the oceans right now?

Here are 10 simple ways to help the ocean starting today:

1. Use Metal or Glass Water Bottles
Water is an important step to giving your body the hydration it needs, but plastic water bottles often pollute our oceans. By opting for a glass water bottle, it’ll help alleviate the pollution in our oceans, but also saves you money by not buying water. It’s also important to note that most plastic bottles are actually not reusable because they can release toxins from heat, so carrying your water in a glass bottle is healthier for your body as well!

2. Use Metal or Wood Utensils
Also, most fast-food restaurants and food trucks give plastic utensils as a means of easy and cheap clean-up, but it’s doing a lot of harm. Plastic utensils such as plastic straws often get into our oceans, causing massive health problems for our ocean animals.

Our family now brings a backpack with us on just about every outing filled with metal water bottles and a few reusable sporks that we got at a camping store.

3. Stop Using Styrofoam & Plastic Cups
Hot coffee or tea in the morning is essential for many people, but cutting out the styrofoam cups can help our oceans breathe a little better. Styrofoam is not biodegradable, making it nearly impossible to dispose of it in a safe way. Getting a thermos to fill up with coffee or tea (at home or at a store) can be a painless step that can help our oceans and ocean animals.

4. Bring a Tote Bag
On recent trips outside the country, I noticed that most stores don’t provide plastic shopping bags, and expect you to use reusable tote bags instead. Sounds like a good policy for our country, too! In the meantime, getting a sturdy tote bag can make sure we’re cutting out plastic bags when we don’t need them. Tote bags are affordable and available in an array of sizes, fun prints, and colors to choose from. Be sure to keep one in the car, and have reusable shopping bags ready for trips to the grocery store!

5. Cut Up Six-Pack Rings & Masks
The plastic that keeps together cans and other drinks may seem like a tiny harmless thing, but our marine and ocean life end up getting stuck in the way too often. If you’re really craving that product and it contains these rings, just make sure to cut them up because it makes sure our animal friends don’t get tangled up in them.

Also, be sure to cut the straps on disposable masks, as people have found a number of seagulls tangled in them

6. Avoid Buying Plastic Packaging
You’ve probably heard about “dead zones” in the ocean consisting of vast seas of plastic garbage. Buying plastic-free packaging can help us cut out ocean pollution. Choosing products that contain easy to recycle packaging such as paper can make sure we’re not consuming a lot of plastic as shoppers. It is also important to note that only 9.5% of plastic is reduced, which means around 90% of our plastic consumption ends up polluting the earth.

7. Travel the Ocean Responsibly
Make sure to research any cruise, kayak, or boating service before you go on your journey to make sure that the services aren’t harming our oceans. There are many eco-friendly options to choose from, so go on ahead and search!

8. Volunteer: Help Clean Up Beaches!
Does your family go to the beach every summer? The tides often carry debris and waste into the ocean which affects ocean water quality and ocean life. Find out if your favorite beach has any “clean-up” events for volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to strengthen your connection to the beach, and is very rewarding. Helping to clean up the pollution on the beach can also bring a huge impact on our oceans.

9. Support Organizations That Help the Ocean
By donating, helping, or spreading the news, you can help make sure that our ocean is protected. Every bit of help counts and there are tons of ways that a person can help. Do a little research on sites like CharityWatch.org and find a top-rated organization or charity that helps the ocean.

10. Learn about the Biodiversity of Our Oceans
The world’s oceans contain millions of marine species, but that number is in decline. Learning about biodiversity and what affects oceans is a powerful tool, and it’s also incredibly interesting!

For kids who use wheelchairs, regular backpacks are anything but practical. Fortunately, Target’s expanded array of back-to-school items features an adaptive backpack with plenty of mounting options, pockets and ports, plus easy-grab zippers. It’s new this year and available for $39.99 online!

At 17 inches, the Embark backpack has been thoughtfully designed for school or adventure time. The mounting and carrying straps attach the pack to a wheelchair, and it has tuck-away back straps to prevent tangling and dragging. You’ll also find access ports for tubes or cables, plus a laptop sleeve designed to fit a machine up to 15 inches. Plus it completely unzips for easy access and features a side water bottle holder. Grab one in black, blue or purple, depending on your kid’s style preference.

Another great option for younger kids? The Cat and Jack 17 inch dino backpack! It offers many of the same features as the Embark model, plus a fun prehistoric print and an orange dino keychain to complete the look. There’s even a built-in compartment to add a hydration pack. Did we mention it’s a reasonably priced $19.99? It’s currently (unsurprisingly) sold out online, but keep an eye out for restocking.

The new products are part of Target Adaptive, made in collaboration with guests of all abilities. The special collections offer seasonal and everyday products that are stylish, functional and come at a great price.

It’s the season of BBQs, beaches and epic games of fetch in the backyard. While people and pets enjoy having fun in the sun together, it’s important to take extra special care of your furry family member when it’s hot and humid. Here’s how to keep them cool, happy and safe.

Hill’s Pet helps families prepare for whatever their pet journey entails. See how Hill’s science-backed nutrition can give your best friend their best life.

Rework Your Walk Times

Dogs rely on panting and sweating through the bottoms of their paws to regulate body temperature and cool down. (FYI: They have fewer sweat glands than humans, which is why there’s no sweaty fur to contend with!) During hot summer months, take longer walks in the morning and evening when it’s cooler outside. Be sure to find some shady spots to stop for breaks along the way. Scale back rigorous outdoor exercise when the sun is blazing. Even if your pup loves to endlessly chase a tennis ball, don’t overdo it. Keep in mind that panting is not common for cats, so if you notice your kitty breathing heavier than usual, call your veterinarian.

Bring Water on-the-Go

Hydration is just as important for dogs as it is for people. Whether you’re strolling around the neighborhood or hanging out in a friend’s backyard, bring along water for your dog and offer it regularly. (Remember, Fido can’t exactly tell you, “I’m thirsty!). Portable dog water dispenser bottles and collapsible travel dog bowls are great options for easy water breaks on the go. Add a few ice cubes when possible.

And Speaking of Water…

Some pets love getting wet! Give your pup a refreshing mist with the hose when you’re watering the garden. When you set out the baby pool or turn on the sprinkler for your kiddos, don’t be surprised if your dog wants to get it on the action, too.

Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car

Keeping your pet in the car isn’t safe and can lead to discomfort, illness, and in worst cases—death. When a car is turned off, the temperature inside can rise to dangerous levels quickly. So run your errands solo, and leave your pet at home!

Get a Fresh Summer Cut

The dog equivalent of swapping sweaters for t-shirts is a summer haircut. Thick coats may make dogs feel hotter, faster. Your pooch will thank you for a trim from the groomer.

Protect Their Paws

Heading out for a walk is probably one of your pet’s favorite pastimes, but if the driveway or sidewalk is extra hot, it may cause injury to their paws. Check to see if the pavement is too toasty by pressing your fingertips on it for a few seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s not right for your dog either.

Know the Signs of Heatstroke

It’s possible for pets to become overheated and suffer from heatstroke if they’re exposed to too much heat and humidity. According to the Humane Society, some signs of heatstroke include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure and unconsciousness. The risk for heatstroke may depend on the animal’s age, weight, pre-existing illnesses, and breed. For example, boxers, pugs, shih tzus, and other dogs and cats with short muzzles will have a much harder time breathing in extreme heat. If you notice these signs, call your vet or head to an animal hospital immediately.
