Parenting a pet is a lot of work, but new data shows that furry friends make life better. A survey of over 2,000 U.S. pet parents revealed that four-legged companions are calming, improve moods and “nourish the soul.”

A study conducted by OnePoll in conjunction with Fuzzy—The Pet Parent Company, found that pets are significantly improving their parents’ lives. Seventy-nine percent of pet owners said they wouldn’t be as happy as they are now without their pet, 76 percent said that having a pet nourishes their soul and a whopping 82 percent said having a pet in the house provides a sense of calmness throughout the home.

Just like parents of human children, pet moms and dads have their fair share of concerns. Almost half (44 percent) worried about becoming parents for the first time and over half (54 percent) didn’t expect to spend so much money on their canine or feline companion.

“Pet parents are often surprised by the unexpected costs and time required to be a good pet parent. From medical bills to toys for playtime it’s a full-time responsibility. Having a pet by your side, however, is worth the cost” says Dr. Cherice Roth, Chief Veterinary Officer for Fuzzy.

Survey respondents certainly seem to agree that it’s worth the cost. And even as the pandemic brought many unwelcome changes to the world, 69 percent said they used the time to bond with their pet more than ever before. Turns out your fur baby might be even more essential than you think!

Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness, regardless of your age. Especially as we get older, it’s crucial to do brain training in order to stay sharp and retain good cognition. Whether you want to sharpen your mind or boost your performance, it’s always a good idea to work on improving your memory. You can boost your memory by improving the health and vitality of your mind with just a few simple daily steps (and kick that forgetfull mommy-brain to the curb). If you’re able to incorporate the following activities into your daily habits, you’ll be well on your way to improving your memory and mental fitness.

1. Meditate, Meditate, Meditate. You might not instinctively think of meditation for improving memory, but studies have shown that this activity can have serious benefits, including boosted memory. It’s a simple but powerful activity you can practice daily with no special equipment.

It does make sense when you think about it—mindfulness and meditation not only help you to relax and reduce your stress levels but also help you to feel more focused in the present moment. By training yourself to not let your mind wander, you’ll be better able to focus on information in your daily life and remember it more effectively.

It’s very easy to get started with meditation. You just need to have a quiet place for your practice and some patience with yourself. If you’re feeling intimidated, there are lots of great apps and resources that can help you get started!

2. Work Out! (Your Mind, That Is). You have to work out your brain as well as your body. The good news is that brain “workouts” can be a lot of fun. Lots of people enjoy brain teasers and puzzles that can help the brain stay sharp. If you like activities like doing Sudoku or jigsaw puzzles, solving the crossword, or working through brain-teasers, then you’re in luck: these are all great ways to boost your brain. Try incorporating a little more fun into your everyday life for the sake of your memory and your happiness!

3. Healthy Body, Healthy Mind. All of the body’s systems are interconnected, and the health of your body will either harm or enhance the health of your mind. For this reason, it’s important to create a sustainable exercise regimen you can stick to. Your memory will thank you!

Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. You can choose something fun, like swimming, dancing, or playing a sport, something relaxing like yoga, or just make brisk walks part of your normal routine. What’s important is that you move your body several times a week.

4. Get Social. Talking with other people can really help to boost your mood and brainpower. Social activity is key for improving and maintaining cognition, especially as a person ages. People who are isolated are even more likely to develop dementia.

If you want to improve your memory, then it may be time to make some plans with friends, attend a community social event, or call a family member. It’s important to interact with other people on a daily basis—you’ll be working on your focus and recall skills by participating in various conversations.

Whether we stick with New Year’s resolutions or not, it’s hard not to reflect on the previous year and look ahead to making some adjustments. While we are contemplating lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, should changes in our parenting approach also be considered?

Like many of you, I have spent lots of time with family members of all ages during the past month. For me this time of year unites both sides of the Cioffi-Obenhaus gang with a holiday party in Chicago, bringing three generations together for food and fun. Such gatherings highlight the challenges that holidays can bring to families of young children. As always, my greatest heroes are the parents hanging in there as their responsibilities grow during the holiday season, juggling work, child care, shopping, decorating, and food prep. Throw in the challenge of children with heightened stimulation and sugar overload, and parents quickly gain superhero status in my eyes.

So, here are my top three suggestions for any parenting new year’s resolutions:

1. Make sure that you and your children are getting plenty of rest. Young children need close to 12 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period, and it is not unusual for children under five to still need a nap. Eliminating fatigue goes a long way toward improving patience (yours) and coping skills (your children’s).

2. Choose nutritious foods for healthy meals and snacks. Celebration foods like cookies and cakes should be limited to holidays and special occasions. You know best which works for you and your family—either by cutting down on the sweet treats or eliminating them altogether.

3. Spend more time outdoors. Whether it is in a city park or a walk in the woods, fresh air and exercise should be part of your new year’s reset and will help with the first two suggestions, improving healthy appetites and better sleeping habits.

All that said, don’t get too discouraged if getting back into the regular routine after the holiday frenzy dies down, takes a bit of time; it will be worth it.

Sending my best wishes to all for a happy, healthy, and peaceful new year!

Worried about keeping your kids healthy? Not being dirty enough could be the problem. New research shows excessive hygiene might lead to the increase of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

A study conducted by the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology at TU Graz has found that highly controlled spaces which are kept excessively clean have an increased rate of antibiotic resistance in microbes. It also found that spaces which were excessively clean were prone to decreased microbial diversity.

The researchers compared highly clean environments, like hospital intensive care units, with regular environments, like people’s homes, which are affected by the surrounding environment.

“In environments with strong microbial control in the intensive care unit and industrially used clean rooms, there are increasing antibiotic resistances which show a high potential for combining with pathogens,” Alexander Mahnert, director of studies at the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology of TU Graz, who is currently conducting research at the Medical University of Graz, said in a statement.

The researchers highlighted certain steps to maintaining and improving microbial diversity, which in turn lessens antibiotic resistance. Regular airing of the space, houseplants and the reduction of antibacterial cleaning agents were among the things the team suggested.

Around the holidays, you tend to look for ways to slow down a little and spend quality time connecting with your kids. Reading with your children is a fun, easy and truly special way to accomplish this. There are so many benefits of cozying up and reading with your young ones during this joyful season. Here’s a few!

Reading with Your Kids Deepens Relationships

When you and your kids read together, you sit close to each other. Your children feel safe snuggling near you. They feel important with the focus just on them in that moment. No phone, no job, no chores are distracting you while you are reading together. It’s just 10 to 15 minutes with you and your children sharing a good story.

Reading with Your Kids Shares Your Values

Reading stories and then talking about them with your children shows them what your family values. You can discuss decisions that characters made and show what your family believes. These discussions could be about how to treat others, how to share and give or how to react when someone hurts you. You can share religious books to discuss what you believe and talk about your faith. Your kids can ask questions of you to learn what you believe and why. You can share how you would like them to behave. These are teachable moments establishing the roots that make up your family.

Reading with Your Kids Develops a Love of Reading

Improving reading skills starts with the love of reading. Children learn to love reading when they associate it with good feelings and memories. When a parent models enjoyment of reading–and I mean reading an actual book, not on a phone or computer–children emulate that. When children love to read, they naturally improve their reading skills. They talk about what they have read, they picture what is going on in a text like a mental movie, they predict what could happen next and they think about what a character might be feeling. These are critical foundations for comprehension; all just from a simple and enjoyable experience with a book.

Reading with Your Kids Slows You Down

Unfortunately, no matter what you do, the holidays are a hectic time. We want to focus on others and family, but we fill our schedules and “to-do” lists with so much that there seems to be little time to just enjoy. When you read with your child, time slows down. You relax, your child relaxes, you breathe more easily and deeply and you just get to be together. You get to read a story for pure enjoyment. This brings a calming effect to the entire season. It can truly be a “silent night” when “all is calm.”

No matter how you celebrate the holidays, make time to read great books with your children. Let them pick a few and you share some of your favorites as a child. Surprise them with a new book at the start of each week to enjoy together. Let reading become your holiday tradition.

IKEA is doing its part to reduce return waste. The Swedish furniture and home retailer recently announced a new partnership with the return optimization provider Optoro—and the results may just change the planet.

If you’re not sure how returns impact the environment, think about what happens to items that can’t return to store shelves, require extra packaging or are transported from one location to another. While a return here and there may not seem like a major problem, over time (and with the high volume of returns in the U.S. retail market) unwanted products can fill landfills and contribute to corporate carbon footprints.

The new collab between IKEA and Optoro seeks to remedy this situation. Javier Quiñones, President & Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA Retail U.S,, said in a press release, “We’re on a mission to become a circular business by 2030, and we need partners like Optoro who can help us achieve our goals.” Quiñones continued, “Optoro’s solution will enable us to eliminate much of the waste created in the reverse supply chain, from minimizing the carbon emissions released in return shipping to finding the best next homes for returned items.”

Tobin Moore, CEO and cofounder of Optoro, added, “IKEA shares our mission of looking to innovation and technology to build the circular economy. Through our work together, we will be able to make an even larger impact on reducing waste from returns, while also improving the customer experience to help fuel ecommerce growth.”

IKEA plans to implement Optoro’s technology in 10 distribution centers, 50 retail stores and the Customer Support Center in the United States.

IKEA’s Top 10 Most Useful Parenting Items

Active mindfulness is the practice of being aware of your body, mind, surroundings, and emotional state. By being actively mindful, life becomes simpler and easier to navigate—the more practiced you are at active mindfulness, the easier it is to access these tools under duress. That means when life throws stressors your way, being actively mindful allows you to minimize their impact and process your feelings, all while improving communication. This is particularly helpful for your closest relationships, as those are the ones most easily impacted by external factors such as job stress or fatigue.

Research has proven that active mindfulness makes you a better, calmer, happier person—for both you and your partner. These improvements come when you and your partner work at making behavioral changes, improving communication, and building towards a better relationship. Success doesn’t require perfection, simply effort. Effort is everything, as repetition leads to forming positive habits. Through regular practice of active mindfulness, your brain chemistry changes, hard-wiring your ability to actively improve your relationship.

So, how do you achieve active mindfulness? There are many different techniques, and much of it comes down to trial and error regarding what works best for you. The following four techniques are some of the most common—and most effective:

Breathe: Seems easy enough, right? Just breathe. Take a few breaths, or take ten breaths. If you’re stressed and having trouble concentrating, then breathe. If you’re in an argument with your partner, then breathe—in fact, encourage your partner to breathe with you. Taking some time to breathe offers a physiological benefit and a practical benefit. When you breathe, it activates the pathways between the body’s breathing mechanism and the brain’s areas of emotional regulation. From a practical perspective, taking a minute or two to breathe removes you from the immediate situation for a little bit of perspective. In the heat of a contentious battle with your partner, having the awareness to take a moment and breathe can lead back to connection much faster—and probably to a solution as well.

Actively Listen: When arguing with your partner, it’s really easy to think about a response even before they finish what they’re saying. We all fall into this trap, and it takes mindfulness to sense that urge, stop it before it happens, and instead acknowledge what they’re saying before offering your response. Actively listening to your partner, whether in a meaningful conversation or heated argument, does wonders to strengthen your relationship. First of all, it will make your partner feel heard. That type of validation makes everyone feel better. Second, it will also allow your own brain to properly process what your partner is saying, ensuring that you two are on the same page going forward.

Assess Your Current State: Many different things can impact your ability to think clearly and keep your emotions from getting the better of you. Did you get a good night’s sleep? Have you eaten lately? Are you jittery from too much caffeine? All of these factors can impact your mood and your thought process, and that in turn can elevate a simple interaction with your partner into a larger source of irritation. Using active mindfulness, you can understand where your body’s current state is at, and if you have any important topics to discuss with your partner, try to bring your body back into balance before doing so. Similarly, if your partner seems particularly irritable, try to assess their state. Recognizing these things in each other and opening a dialogue about them will strengthen your ability to communicate with each other.

Journal: Journaling is a bit of a lost art form in our modern era of bite-sized social media blasts. This is a shame because it’s one of the most helpful and therapeutic ways to stay mindful of your feelings, your stressors, and your day-to-day life. There’s no right or wrong way to journal, as long as you try to do it with some regularity and simply get the words out there—and the more you do it, the easier it’ll feel. The best part is that modern technology allows us to journal anywhere and everywhere. With smartphones, you can use any number of apps for collecting your own thoughts, from journaling apps to voice recorders. Any method works, as long as you take a moment to reflect on yourself—though if you do go the old-fashioned route of pen and notebook, physically writing things down activates parts of your brain that involve memory and information processing. As you become more self-aware, you’ll be a better communicator. In fact, you can even suggest dedicated journaling time with your partner as a couples’ activity.

Mindfulness Benefits Parenting Too

All of the above techniques improve communication, awareness, and empathy in relationships. They also work directly in parent-child relationships and also deliver a second benefit. When you use active mindfulness during moments with your child, you’ll see the immediate impact in a stronger relationship but you’ll also be modeling this type of self-regulatory behavior for your child. This builds a foundation within them to normalize these techniques themselves and understand their value in friendships and romantic partnerships. Simply put, when you’re actively mindful, everyone wins.
