New York City is one of the most iconic cities in the world, and with so much to do, it can be hard to decide what to do first—especially when it comes to exploring the Big Apple and discovering fun things to do in NYC with kids. From the bright lights of Times Square to the world–class art galleries of the Upper East Side, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Of course, don’t forget there’s tons of nature to discover, you can nosh on some of the world’s best goodies—including the best pizza in the world (yasss!), and explore the numerous hidden gems and best immersive experience in NYC. To make sure you don’t miss out on the best NYC has to offer, here is a list of the top 101 (because NYC always has to be extra) things to do in the city.
The Best Ways to Explore Nature in NYC & the 5 Boroughs
1. You may have been to Central Park, but have you been to NYC’s other biggest parks? One of the best things to do with kids in NYC is to pay a visit to Prospect Park (Brooklyn), Pelham Bay Park (Bronx), Flushing Meadows Corona Park (Queens), and Freshkills Park (Staten Island—currently in the process of being renovated and is opening in phases through 2036). Each has so much to explore, from the Shakespeare Garden in Central Park to the Audubon House in Prospect Park… and beyond!
2. Want a more guided experience of the city’s parks? Joint the Urban Rangers for a family event, often including ways to engage little minds, bodies, and hands. Visit the NYC Parks website’s “Best for Kids” section to find an activity in your local park.
3. Take a stroll through the city’s gardens, hidden oases of flora to amaze and engage year round. Many of the gardens include sensory sections to engage the smallest visitors (and parents will enjoy them, too!) and various themed activities and crafts. Our garden recommendations are the Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, Snug Harbor in Staten Island, and Wave Hill in the Bronx.
4. If you’re itching for a nature walk of a more uniquely NYC type, check out one of the more unusual parks the city is home to. Not sure where to start? Head to the High Line to experience an elevated-train-track-turned-green-walkway, or wander among the graves at Greenwood Cemetery.
5. You don’t need to go anywhere special to find nature—it’s all around us. Go on a nature walk and keep your eyes peeled for local critters, migratory birds, and more. For a guided walk, look to the NYC Parks website, which hosts bird-watching events, nature exploration walks, beach discovery tours, and more. Or, just stop by the information center of many parks and ask to borrow a kit with binoculars, a magnifying glass, as well as activity sheets and colored pencils to keep kids engaged on the walk.
6. Want to get more hands on? There are many opportunities to help out in NYC parks and community gardens. What’s available varies by season but activities are often all-ages and include park cleanup, planting, weeding, mulching, and the occasional unique one-off (like planting sea grass on Brighton Beach!).
7. Did you know that NYC has indoor parks as well? Some are so well-hidden that even native New Yorkers don’t know about them! Our favorite is The Ford Foundation in Midtown: It has an atrium with real trees and plants, a reflecting pool, and a sensory garden.
8. Meet and greet the city’s animals at the various zoos and farms in NYC. Visit Queens Farm, the city’s only working farm, dive into the depths of the waters at the Coney Island aquarium. Or drop by Alley Pond for themed crafts, walks, and encounters with their animal ambassadors.
9. Wake up in a real farm with a farm stay near NYC. Help out with the daily farm chores (like feeding the animals!), disconnect from the internet, and buy some fresh produce on your way out. It doesn’t get much more “farm to table” than literally getting the goods at the farm yourself.
10. Hop on a train, bus, or car out of town for a day trip. You don’t have to go far from the city to find incredible hiking trails, quaint towns, and fun adventures for the whole family. We recommend different daycations depending on whether you’re traveling in the spring for a spring break trip, summer, fall to see the leaves change, or winter to find some nearby snow.
11. NYC’s playgrounds have been getting renovated in recent years, and thanks to renewed funding, will continue to revamp the city’s beloved child hangouts. Your local playground is sure to entertain and educate, as well as keep the little ones cool in the summer with plenty of splash park options. There are also some incredible and unique playgrounds to check out around the city, like Domino Park’s homage to the sugar factory that used to exist in the space. You won’t want to miss these!
12. You never get too old for a carousel, and the city has a few that are sure to thrill, no matter how old you are. Some of our favorite merry-go-rounds are Jane’s Carousel in DUMBO, the SeaGlass Carousel in Battery Park, and Riverbank State Park’s Totally Kid Carousel—which features kid-designed rides.
14. Explore the city in a way you’ve never seen it before—through the augmented reality lens of a scavenger hunt! Companies like CluedUpp and Watson Adventures set you up with clues, and send you on an adventure down various parts of NYC in search of answers to mysteries and virtual treasures.
15. There are plenty of amusement parks to get your thrills, from the city’s very own Luna Park to the beloved SIx Flags in nearby New Jersey. Smaller adrenaline junkies will enjoy Nickelodeon Universe, while everyone in the family will find something to love at LegoLand in Orange County.
16. Whether you’re visiting or having a staycation, consider bedding down at a family-friendly hotel. These offer fun perks just for kids, like indoor “camping” kits and scavenger hunts through the hotel hallways.
17. Fore! Swing your clubs through challenging and family-friendly courses in any of NYC’s mini-golf spots and by “fore” one of the most fun things to do in NYC with kids.
18. Entertain your tiny train buffs with an extra-special train ride near NYC. There are so many choices to fulfill your trainspotter: seasonal rides to the North Pole, year-round scenic routes on classic locomotives, miniature train shows (the biggest are at Grand Central Terminal and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens), a visit the Transit Museum along with their can’t miss rides on vintage trains.
20. Board games make for a great night in, but you can still make it a night out with the fam. Head out to a board game cafe like the Uncommons in Manhattan or Sip & Play in Brooklyn, and enjoy game night while sipping on drinks that you didn’t even have to make yourself. Everyone wins!
21. Roll a strike (or just have fun!) at one of the city’s bowling alleys. Many, like Bowlero and Brooklyn Bowl, have plenty of other fun things to do to make the experience a full night out, like live music, arcade games, and even laser tag.
22. Flip and bounce on the trampolines at Launch Trampoline in Queens, Bounce-U’s bouncy castles in Elmsford, or one of the other trampoline parks in and near the city.
23. Hide from bad weather at a kid-approved indoor playground. Explore large structures like the ones at Funtopia and Joyful Palace, or keep it smaller for the tinier tots at a cafe-playground combo like Masal Cafe in Sheepshead Bay.
24. Level up your gaming skills at one of the city’s fun arcades. Make it a family affair with places like Dave and Buster’s—which has games for all ages and a banging bar for the adults.
25. Enter the world of virtual reality at a specialty spot where kids and adults can try the awesome new tech. Explore new worlds, work together as a team in a virtual environment, and have fun! Note that some places have age restrictions (generally 12 and up), so be sure to check before you go if you have younger kids.
27. Visit a museum where you’re not just allowed to touch the exhibits—you’re actively encouraged to! Interactive museums like the NY Hall of Science in Queens, Liberty Science Center in NJ, and SpyScape in Manhattan are all excellent places to take curious kids.
28. While you’re out and about, capture the magic at one of New York’s photo booths. You’ll find these memory machines hidden around the city, whether you’re checking out the Ace Hotel or chowing down at Dekalb Market Hall.
29. Slip and slide into the pools at an indoor water park, whether it’s 90, or 19 degrees, outside. Aquatopia and the Great Wolf Lodge are two great options within driving distance of NYC.
30. Embrace your creative side by joining an arts and crafts class. Free options include crafting at parks and libraries themed, cultural, and seasonal workshops in museums and gardens (which are often free with admission). There’s also a huge range of paid classes, like pottery, paint and sip (sodas, not wine!), and even textile arts.
31. Kids can sing and dance with performances especially made for different age groups. From classical music to kid bops, catch a show at a local theater, cafe, or park.
32. Plan, dig, and build at a construction-themed playground, and introduce kids to life-long skills like safe tool use and effective risk assessment. Places like The Yard at Governors Island and Kids at Work in Manhattan unleash kids on building materials armed with tools and creativity. Diggerland in NJ even lets them operate heavy machinery (supervised, of course)!
33. It’s always storytime somewhere in NYC. Catch a read-along at a library, bookstore, or park, sometimes featuring the author of the work being read.
34. Smaller tots can dance, sing, and learn key motor skills at “Mommy and Me” (or “Guardian and Me”) classes all around the city. These provide an excellent way to build budding skills and find parent friends in your nabe.
The Best Places to Experience Art & Culture in NYC with Kids
35. Art doesn’t just sit on museum walls—it’s all around us! There are tons of public art on display in the city, many of them here for a limited time, allowing you to explore new art throughout the months. Some other museums, like the Skyscraper Museum, frequently have family and child-oriented programs (often offered free with admission).

51. For some family fun and stunning photo-ops, check out one of NYC’s interactive experiences. Find opportunities to help out (many of which are kid-friendly) through organizations like City Meals on Wheels—which has options from making gift cards to making weekly visits to elderly or disabled people who need some companionship. Other volunteer options include helping out at food kitchens, distributing books and toys, and even dog walking at Sean Casey Animal Rescue—just show up with your ID to take one of their doggos out for a stroll!

The water park is covered by a transparent roof for year-round tanning, and the temperature stays at a balmy 84 degrees, so it feels more like the Caribbean than the Catskills. With 52 water slides, 12 pools, and two flow riders, they can enjoy water play all day long indoors (or out when the sun is shining). Then if they need a break from the water, simply book time on the zip lines, aerial obstacle course, or pottery painting studio. So if you want to add skiing, snowboarding, and tubing to your water-drenched adventures, think winter vaycay spot.

When you feel like ditching them for some adult-only time at the spa or maybe the bar, there's a huge kids' club with an impressive activity program.
With seven freshwater pools to choose from, you're definitely going to want to plan for lots of water play time at Lopesan Costa Bávaro Resort Spa & Casino. Will it be a lazy river or a Flowrider surfing simulator day?

From thrilling rides to family-friendly games and other exciting programming, here are the best resorts in Arizona with water features to consider when you plan that next family vacation or holiday reunion.
Head straight for the AquaRidge Water Park at JW Marriott to make the most of Canyon Creek Lazy River, four signature pools, and three thrill-inducing waterslides: The Gullywasher, a two-person tube slide; The Drop, for twists, turns, and a steep drop; and Little Eddy, for the younger kids in the group with a few gentle slopes and turns.
The Westin La Palomahas pool options for the entire family. The main pool boasts Tucson’s longest waterslide at 177 feet. The kids will love that and then have some fun in the heated kids’ pool area. Adults meanwhile can take advantage of the Dead Sea mineral pool which comes complete with a mineral waterfall.
Great Wolf Lodge | Scottsdale

Arizona’s only indoor waterpark is at Great Wolf Lodge. The temperature here is maintained at a balmy 82 degrees year-round so you’ll always feel cozy indoors. And while it may not have waterpark in the name, there is a large water complex with a variety of games and rides to indulge in. If you are not staying overnight, then a day pass gives you access for a few hours.
Fairmont Scottsdale Princess | Scottsdale
Fairmont Scottsdale Princess
Kids can race down two 200-foot twisting water slides of fun at theFairmont Scottsdale Princess’ Sonoran Splash. The family-friendly area also has zero-entry waters so younger kids can easily access the pool with their parents. The Oasis Water Park at Arizona Grand Resort gives you a 7-acre area full of fun water activities for the family including a giant wave pool and three 8-story thrill rides at Slide Canyon Tower. Younger kids can head to the Wild Cat Springs area where three jets shoot into a heated pool, there’s also a spray deck nearby and the largest side-by-side active river for tubing.

Your kids will flip for the 126-square-foot indoor water park
Family vacations are often designed with the hope that our kids will not only have fun… but actually, remember the time spent together for years to come. Shared memories help bond families, which might be why Great Wolf Lodge (GWL) aptly markets itself as a place to “Strengthen the Pack.” The newest Great Wolf Lodge resort in Perryville, MD is not only the franchise’s largest, it’s now the closest resort to the DC metro area (just 90 minutes north of the city) and with over 50 adventure-packed activities all under one roof, it’s also the perfect place to forge adrenaline-fueled, long-term memories with your own pack.
From challenging the kids to a lifesize, ride-on version of Hungry Hungry Hippo in the resort’s arcade to racing your family on the water-flume racetrack at Mountain Edge Raceway to simply gathering around a communal meal at Barnwood, the opportunities to spend quality time together are endless at this expansive new resort 75 miles from Washington, DC.
Get Soaked at the Indoor Waterpark
The first Great Wolf Lodge opened in 1997 in Wisconsin Dells, WI with a 20,000-square-foot water park, Today, Perryville, MD tops all 20 resorts nationwide with the largest indoor space—a whopping 126,000 square feet—filled with splash and spray pads, a wave pool, dump buckets, a lazy river, water cannons, and 22 epic slides. Did we mention the slides?
From toddler slides to gentle twisting tubes to an exhilarating 4 story drop, there is a “just right” thrill for everyone. Enjoy the woosh of River Canyon Run (a family raft experience), pack in the most twists and turns on the longest twister slide in Maryland (a brand new attraction to all resorts!), or head to Coyote Canyon for a cortisol-spiking 40-foot-drop thrill ride! Step outside the 84-degree heated indoor space and there is more water-themed fun outside including a wade-in pool and a “Hot Springs” hot tub.
Insider tip: Admission is included in your room rate, but you can also purchase day passes. Rates fluctuate between $40 for an off-season, mid-week half-day pass to $150 for a peak season, full-day pass.
Embark on the Ultimate Scavenger Hunt
While Great Wolf Lodge is best known for its water parks, it’s MagiQuest—the Harry Potter-like wand experience that weaves through Adventure Park and the Grand Lobby—that is one of the resort’s most stand-out experiences. Wand in hand, Magis are sent on an interactive scavenger hunt to find magic runes to help restore a mythical forest. Set the wand to Mini Magis mode and kids under 6 can activate the sparkling treasure chests and light up the tree-embedded icons without jumping through the game’s hoops. Complete the quest and your quest master will be knighted a Master Magi during the resort’s daily ceremony. If you don’t make Master Magi on your first visit, simply pack your wand for your next visit and start where you left off (with the purchase of new game time).
Insider tip: You can purchase this as a stand-alone attraction ($16.99/quest, $34.99/wand and quest bundle) or – if you are a resort guest—you can purchase a value-added Wolf Pass ($84.99) that includes all the Adventure Park attractions (except gem mining).
Go to New Heights in Adventure Park
Elevate your family’s vacation at Howlers Peak Rope Course, a multi-level obstacle course suspended high above the resort’s miniature golf course. Get strapped into a safety harness and climb through rope bridges, hop from platform to platform and, if you dare to walk a narrow “plank” like a pirate, you will be rewarded by ringing a bell that lets everyone know you made it!
Once you have your feet on solid ground, there is plenty more to explore and do, including a 9-hole putt-putt course, an interactive mirror maze, miniature bowling (think shorter lanes and smaller balls), an action-packed arcade, and a gem mining station. If your child loves MagiQuest, the Magic Mirror Maze is a must. It takes a carnival mirror maze experience and turns it into a live-action game where your mini miner has to interact with the mirror to reveal the way out.
Insider tip: The bowling alley is first come, first served so be sure to grab your tokens when you arrive so you can pounce on an open lane.
Have Howling Good Fun in the Grand Lobby
You’ll find nothing but free fun in the Grand Lobby where daily activities include craft time, dance parties, yoga, character meet & greets with the pack from The Great Wolf Park Adventures, and a theatrical bedtime story featuring the Legend of Luna.
There is a constant buzz of activities in the Grand Lobby; mornings kick off with kid-friendly yoga sessions followed by interactive storytimes, hands-on craft parties, and more. Even when there isn’t an official event, there is plenty to do—like challenge your crew to an oversized game of Connect Four—while you gather around the magic fireplace.
One of the most popular events is the character meet & greets, a thrice-daily photo opp for the whole family. Grab a pair of free wolf ears at the Buckhorn Exchange Gift Shop and get ready to get in character (pun intended) with the stars of The Great Wolf Park Adventures (streamed daily in all resort rooms). Get a family picture with Violet Wolf, Wiley Wolf, Oliver Racoon, Brinley Bear, or Sammy Squirrel. Don’t forget to visit the Build-a-Bear Workshop (in the back corner of Buckhorn Exchange) to build and bring home your very own plush version of these beloved woodland animals.
A brand new experience has debuted at this Perryville resort and it’s a must for all Wolf Pack fans. The Legend of Luna, which tells the story of Violet as a young pup, is a multi-sensory, theatrical storytime that caps off each evening (there are two daily shows). With a dramatic poof of smoke, the lobby’s magical fireplace comes to life with twinkling lights and special effects for the ultimate bedtime story.
Insider tip: If you’re going to spring for a Build-a-Bear, bundle and save with a Pup Pass ($59.99) that includes the Build-a-Bear experience, recommended for toddlers and young children, but we spied a few teens taking advantage of this perk!
Enjoy the Suite Life
Meghan Meyers
You don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy Great Wolf Lodge (the resort offers day passes), but with so many attractions under one roof, it’s nice to have a quiet place to take a break from the excitement. GWL makes it easy to travel with your entire pack (including the Grands) with suites that have accommodations for 6 to 13 people. All rooms include a refrigerator and a small dining area so you can enjoy your leftovers as a hearty post-pool snack (there are public microwaves and ice machines on every floor).
Standard rooms are a great value, but if you have more than 6 people or just want to experience the rustic lodge-vibe in your own hotel room, book a themed suite that features either a cabin-themed or cave-themed interior design complete with bunk beds (always a hit with the kids!).
Insider tip: Every year Great Wolf Lodge offers an $84 roommate on Aug. 4 in honor of the resort’s anniversary. The crazy low price is a nod to the constant temp in the indoor waterpark; a steamy 84 degrees.
Satisfy Your Hunger Like a Wolf
GWL makes feeding a family easy (and budget-friendly). With so many quick service options, you don’t have to tear yourself away from the attractions for long; grab a burger, sandwich, or a healthy salad at the American-style eatery Timbers or serve your ravenous pack a generously sized pizza pie at Hungry Like a Wolf.
If you want to take a break from the fast-paced adventures of GWL, book a reservation at the rustic, but elegant, Barnwood where your dining experience will make you forget you’re at a water park! Entrees include grilled salmon, steak, and free-range chicken. Other onsite options include Dunkin’, a buffet-style breakfast at Campfire Kitchen, Wood’s End Creamery (get a free scoop with a Wolf, Paw or Pup pass!), and grab-and-go style meals from Freshwoods Market.
Insider tip: Head to Freshwoods Market before the nighttime showing of the Legend of Luna for popcorn served in a souvenir cup.
Ready to book your GWL vacation? They are ready to welcome you!

Callicoon, NY Online:villaroma.com
This is one of the top destinations for NYC dwellers, thanks to its proximity to NYC central and affordable price. You won’t know you’re only a stone’s throw away, though, as a scenic lake, forested mountain trails, and a woodsy lodge greet you at Bear Mountain. Have a BBQ and a picnic in the main area, while the kids play in the small playground or run around the huge grassy field.
In the summer, you can visit the outdoor pool, while winter brings ice skating to the space. And while there’s no swimming allowed in the lake, you can rent a paddle boat or simply sit on a lakeside bench and enjoy the views. Two must-see attractions are the carousel, featuring wooden representations of the animals native to the region, and the zoo, which houses rescued and rehabilitated animals, many of which are also local residents. Look up to catch sight of some huge vultures! (Don’t worry, they’re just here to steal snacks from the zoo’s bears.)
Known for being New York’s biggest indoor park, the Kartrite Resort has it all: pools and slides, an arcade, mini-golf, and multiple options for chowing down. Choose to stay in one of the 300+ modern suites, which have one- or two-bedroom options decked out in chic decor, or go rustic at the lodge, set right in the mountains. The enormous water park is home to thrilling rides like the Krakken and the Nor’Easter, as well as calmer, shallow options for the little puddle ducklings in your family. As a bonus, when you stay at the resort overnight, you actually get access to the water park for the full day both on your check in and check-out day.

In the winter, the resort also offers ice skating and snow tubing, and more family fun.
Of course, as the name suggests, visitors also get a chance to go horseback riding: The resort can accommodate all levels, whether you’re a regular rider or have never seen a horse in person in your life. Beginner-friendly ski slopes, an indoor waterpark, and cabins for families make this spot a winner
If you’re eager to get your kids on skis, Massanutten Resort is the place to start. Over the past 50 years, this family-friendly mountain has grown from a six-trail destination to a four-season entertainment center featuring 14 ski trails, snow tubing, an indoor/outdoor water park, ice skating, an e-sports center, and more. Just two hours from both Washington DC and Richmond, VA, Massanutten Resort offers some of the best ski conditions in the region thanks to its high-tech snowmaking and grooming capabilities. With over 50 new snowmaking guns, this mountain makes more snow in a day “than Mother Nature.”
Not only are the ski conditions top-notch, but there are plenty of activities beyond the trails for family fun and memory-making. Spend an afternoon zipping down what The Washingtonian has praised as the best snow tubing park in the region, enjoy the indoor waterpark on a rainy day, or challenge the family to air hockey or bowling at the resort’s onsite arcade. Massanutten Resort delivers an action-packed, family-oriented winter getaway for both novice and expert skiers with plenty of après-ski things to do.
The Ski Experience at Massanutten Resort
Meghan Yudes Meyers
New skiers should make a beeline for the Magic Carpet conveyor lift for an itty bitty bunny hill that is so gentle you rarely see new skiers topple. Once new skiers master the snow plow, it’s on to Paula’s Way, a longer run down a gradual hill where new skiers (and snowboarders) get a better sense of balancing on skis. Once your kiddo becomes confident on this hill, you can introduce them to Creekside’s quad chairs and hit Southern Comfort, a hill that mirrors Paula’s Way in steepness but offers a much longer run.
One of the biggest expenses at any mountain is ski lessons. Costing almost as much as a lift ticket, it’s a spendy investment we think is worth it. Help you or your child get comfortable on the mountain fast by building confidence-boosting skills quickly. You’ll find teachers—all of whom are registered members of PSIA or Professional Ski Instructors of America—that work with any range of abilities and are also experienced in adaptive instruction for those who might do better with a different learning style.
While your child is enrolled in class, take advantage of the babysitting (wink, wink) and explore the more advanced trails. Massanutten Resort boasts the highest vertical of any ski mountain in VA, MD, or PA—rewarding those that make it to the peak with impressive views.
Where to Fuel Up on the Slopes
Massanutten Resort
The General Store
A day of skiing can work up an appetite. Whether you want to kick start your day with a cup of coffee or grab trail mix for the slopes, The General Store has a wide variety of sundries for a day of skiing. You’ll also find must-have staples for your rental, like cooking oil, condiments, and marshmallows for roasting. Forgot ski gloves or need to size up on some ski pants? You’ll find everything from socks to ski coats to help you suit up for the mountain.
Ski Lodge Cafeteria
Spend more time on the trails and less time in the lodge with a quick meal. The cafeteria’s menu is loaded with hot comfort foods, like chicken fingers, pizza, and chili, but you’ll also find lighter options like salads, yogurts, fresh fruits, and sandwiches in the refrigerated section. This quick service option offers a fresh fixings bar with large slices of tomato, fresh lettuce, and other sandwich toppers.
Virginia BBQ & Pizza Co.
At the end of a day of skiing, make a pit stop at this onsite-smoked BBQ and pizza joint at the foot of Massanutten (located in the Visitor Center). For picky eaters, this dine-in and carry-out restaurant also has a kids’ menu featuring chicken fingers, hot dogs, and grilled cheese. Virginia BBQ & Pizza Co. is also a great place to start your day with breakfast sandwiches, French toast sticks, or egg-based breakfast bowls.
Skiing isn’t the only way to enjoy Massanutten’s mountain. If you’ve got a beginner on skis, chances are they’ll spy the saucer-like tubes flying down the mountain just a short distance from Paula’s Way (you can’t miss the screams!). Praised as the best snow tubing by The Washingtonian, these 90-minute snow tube sessions whisk tubers down one of 16 lanes for fast thrills (and a few high-pitched shrieks). You must be 36′ tall to participate and tubes are single-rider only, but you can attach up to four tubes to pick up some extra speed.
Family Fun After Skiing
Massanutten Resort
A trip to Massanutten Resort would be incomplete without a visit to its famed Indoor waterpark. The indoors are always heated to a toasty 84° so your littles can climb and explore without ever feeling cold. There is a lazy river, numerous (gigantic!) dump buckets, a kid-friendly hot tub, a kiddie pool, giant tube slides, body slides, and more. Not to be missed is the wave pool where experienced surfers will teach you how to zig left and right through the waves, kneel on your board and if you’re one of the nimble few, pop up to surf!
Meghan Yudes Meyers
Above Massanutten’s WaterPark is a full floor of arcade fun. If you’ve rented a locker at the water park, you’ll get a $15 “refund” to use in the arcade. Beyond grabber machines and arcade games, this entertainment center features pin bowling and ride-on games. When you’re done playing, take your card loaded with your ticket winnings to the shop (yes, there is an entire shop!) to choose from a massive range of prizes.
Luxury Lodging at Massanutten Resort
Meghan Yudes Meyers
From hotels to townhouses to home rentals, there are a number of lodging options both on the mountain and in the valley at Massanutten Resort. King among them is Regal Vistas, a condo-style housing community surrounded by mountain views.
We love these two-bedroom homes not only for their convenience to all of the Resort’s amenities (the water park is at the base of the complex and the ski trails are a quick drive away) but each house is meticulously designed for an optimal family vacation. With a king-bed master, a queen bed, and a pull-out sofa, these homes can comfortably accommodate up to six guests. There is a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, and a single-car garage (which comes in handy as a makeshift play area). You’ll appreciate the master suite’s hot tub after a long day of skiing (and we bet the kids will find it the most epic bubble bath ever with changing colored lights).

From pubic swimming pools to unbelievable water parks, these spots will make you feel like you’re on vacation (even when you’re not)
It’s wintertime in Portland and the whole “no rain, no gain” thing is real. And while we know Portland families don’t shy away from outdoor activities, even on the rainiest days, we’re here to tell you ducking into an indoor playspace doesn’t make you a quitter. Lean into winter’s water theme when you take the kids to a family swim session at a local indoor swimming pool. They can splish and splash the afternoon away, and you can benefit from an easy nap time.

East Portland Indoor Pool
There’s no need for memberships at East Portland Community Center. You can either sign up for baby or kid swimming classes or drop-in for a winter swim. They have family changing rooms to suit up for hours of indoor water play. Shark slides, vortex pools, and a lazy river that propels you along the path are a few of the water splendors you can expect. If you’re a family of older tadpoles try the 4 lane lap pool for some full body exercise.
Good to Know: Before heading over, please call 503-823-3450 as schedules may change
While this pool is loved by locals because it is home to the only outdoor splash pad in its district, we are celebrating it for its fantastic indoor pool. Additionally, Conestoga Community Center has even more to offer. The center includes a dance and fitness room, weight room, four multi-purpose classrooms, two wooden floor gymnasiums, and an outdoor playground for nicer days. This unique and refreshing venue full of sprinklers, fountains, slides, and lap pools that will keep little and older swimmers (along with parents) busy for hours. Hint: the side pool just got a makeover last year.

Mt. Scott Indoor Pool
The biggest attraction at Mt. Scott Community Center in the fall and winter months is the fabulous pool which far surpasses the usual lap pool. It’s full of colorful water features, a kiddie “fun” pool, a swirly twirly water slide, a hot tub for the adults, a lazy river for babes, and a whirlpool with gentle currents. Get there on the right day and they might even put out a rope for swinging out over the water Tarzan-style. Sign up for kids' swim lessons or bring the whole family for hours of happy wet squeals during Family Swim.
With a zero-depth pool this center lets children of all levels learn to swim while still being able to stand. If you opt to enroll in swim classes you’re in luck. The instructors are kind, patient, and encouraging. Here just to play? Your family of swimmers will not be disappointed by the plethora of water features designed to splish and splash water from buckets down into the pool.
Make a big splash in the Firstenburg Aquatic Playground. The leisure pool has the longest water slide in Clark County measuring in at 17 feet high. Not feeling that adventurous? No worries. Grab an inner tube and float the lazy river instead. In addition they have a spa, three-lane therapeutic lap pool, and a kid friendly zero-depth entry. Check out the special preschool-specific Aqua Play that usually runs a few times during the week.
Dive into Oregon’s largest wave pool, splash around in the toddler zone, swim laps in the six-lane pool, fearlessly glide down water slides, or relax in the hot tub soaking those aching muscles. North Clackamas Aquatic Park is the perfect destination to escape the icy temps for a day in the always-86-degrees water. There’s truly something for everyone here during Big Surf Recreational Swim time. It’s affordable entertainment and water-focused education. The Aquatic Park also offers swimming lessons, aquatic fitness classes, and party rentals. Although it's not required, pre-registration for open swim is recommended for each 90-minute slot.

Shute Park Aquatic and Recreation Center (SHARC)
Whether you go for a swim or exercise classes this full service aquatic center will thrill both young and old. It offers three full pools, a spa pool and dry sauna, and water classes. The littlest swimmers can easily navigate the beginning depth of only 18 inches and giggle their way around the yellow teacup feature. Check out the preschool water water pool swim time with your tots. If you have bigger more comfortable swimmers there are great places for parents to relax and watch kids explore and play.
This indoor waterpark is an all season experience! It has a bunch of different waterslides—each designed for adventurers of varying age, ability, and courage, and each comes with a witty aero-theme name, like Sonic Boom, Mach 1, and Tail Spin. Daredevils might enjoy the Nose Dive that spits you into a pool and shoots you out backwards. While younger swimmers will enjoy the tamer slides found next to the Space Shuttle mock-up. Once you've had your fill of epic slides, kids can play at Splash Down Harbor, go for a spin in the Vortex Pool, and explore the helicopter-topped, forest-themed, multi-level Aqua Play Area. You'll need a whole day here. And did we mention the park is ADA accessible? This is a big win for all families.
Insider Tip: Purchase your tickets online and in advance to save some dough.
Swim, splash, slide! Great Wolf Lodge is the water park of your dreams. If you can’t stay a whole weekend, do your best to book an overnight experience at least. There are simply not enough hours in the day to experience everything this waterpark has to offer. It’s an hour and a half drive from Portland that will transport you into a fantastic water world of exploration, fun, and adventure. If you can dream it, they’ve got it—including water slides on the exterior of the hotel. Slides, a multi-story treehouse, tunneled family trips on River Canyons, totem towers, floating lily pads, tadpole ponds, and so much more fun. After you’ve swam and hopped from adventure to adventure, hit up the warming pool, and grab some dinner.
Good to Know: Beyond amazing waterpark perks, families can also play mini golf, hit up the arcade, try the outdoor ropes course (during the warmer months), and go on quests of all kinds around the property. Trust us, this is a definite weekend getaway hot spot.
