In a recent Instagram poll, I asked this question: “Are you feeling stressed and anxious—now, more than ever”? 97% of teen respondents said, “YES”!

Am I surprised? No way. Am I curious what a teen girl’s world is like now that everything has changed? You bet.

I decided to ask more specific questions. To start, I queried about their body signs of stress.

They told me they are experiencing more headaches, stomachaches, tears, insomnia, and lethargy. I then asked about how they are coping. Most told me they are turning to their screens and some said they were trying to get outside more and be more active. Finally, I asked about what was causing the most stress. Girls told me their top three stressors: friendships (as in, not getting enough time to hang out and have fun), school (as in, how difficult it is to teach herself and stay engaged on Zoom or teams calls), and the future (as in, when will life get “back to normal” and what is summer and life going to be like).

At Bold New Girls, I have noticed a radical shift this year in girls’ energy (they are constantly fatigued), their enthusiasm (they really isn’t any), their moods (they are often sensitive at best, cantankerous at worst), and their mindsets (they are unable to hold a positive attitude about what’s working for them or going well).

Teen girls get my utmost empathy and compassion. Life is just tough right now. And, so are they! Your daughter is similarly struggling like these pollsters and she can become resilient by going through the tough stuff. Here are four ways you can help her with her mental health right now:

1. Look at her context. See her story and what’s been happening for her—at school, with her friends, and online. You may want to try asking more creative questions like, “I’d love to hear about your day today or how you are connecting online and in-person.” This helps you understand the “whole girl.”

2. Let her talk. Give her your undivided attention (putting down your phone and to-do list), the safe emotional space (assuring her this is her time to share, not yours), and the time to tell you what’s really on her mind (where neither of you watches the clock). This helps her unburden her concerns.

3. Listen. Don’t interrupt, interject, add on, problem solve, or minimize anything she says. Your job is to really hear her—both her words and the feelings behind her words—and “get” her in perhaps a new way. This helps her feel accepted.

4. Start as many sentences as you can with “Let’s try…”  Suggest what you can do together to cultivate her healthy and positive mindset. You could try a relaxing activity together such as stretching, yoga, or meditation. You could also plan a new activity or a little adventure that could offer you both a change of routine and scenery. This helps her feel she is not alone—you are right there with her—and you are on her side.

In the next Instagram poll, I am going to ask this question: “Are you getting the support you need and feeling more balanced!” I can’t wait to see improved results.

Christine Hernandez is a Mama on a mission to help other Mama's find their village and get the support they need to thrive.

The moment I saw that positive pregnancy test for the first time the part of me that wasn’t terrified went into instant Mama Bear mode. I wanted to make sure I ate all the right things, took the right supplements but what I didn’t realize was that what I was putting ON my body was just as important as what I was putting IN my body and my personal care products needed a little bit of a change up.

I used The Environmental Working Group’s (ewg..org) searchable database to check how the ingredients in the products I was using measured up against their safety guidelines and I was surprised at what I found. It took a little of combing through the shelves at Target and some trial and error to find things that were both clean AND effective but once I found these five staples, I have never gone back to my old stuff.

1

Mineral Salt Crystal Deodorant

Crystal Deodorant- Your Pits Will Thank You

$6.37

In my 20's I had a swollen lymph node under my arm for two years. It was so big that you could see it when I wore tank tops and it made my armpit look weird. I went to numerous doctors until one suggested I stop using deodorant. Unwilling to just wear NOTHING, I scoured the healthfood store shelves and this Crystal's claim of being amazing intrigued me. It is literally just mineral salts and you wet it and rub it on your pits and go about your business smelling fresher than a daisy without any nasty chemicals. Five years later, that lymph node is no longer swollen and I will never use conventional deodorant again (and I don't smell, you can ask my hubs).

Do I know for sure it was because I used this oil, also no. But, it was nice to take some time every night to rub my belly and connect with the tiny person growing inside. “C” is for cookie. And if that isn’t enough to make your little monster’s tummy rumble, along come “CCC” — chocolate chip cookies! Chicago does the indulgence justice, because we have kid-friendly bakeries and restaurants that make delicious, from-scratch versions of the treats—from cookies as big as your head to infused deliciousness. You’re never far from your next fix. Here is where we get ours.

Beatrix

Beatrix is the Beyonce of restaurants. It does it all, from breakfast to lunch, brunch to dessert. One of the best ways for families to experience Beatrix is via its coffee and pastry bar, which is a full-fledged bakery inside the restaurant. The selection offers an overwhelming array of muffins, breads, cakes, scones and more. Something Beatrix does exceptionally well is cookies, particularly the chocolate chunk cookie. These large, saucer-sized indulgences achieve the perfect middle ground of crispy along the exterior and soft in the center. Each bite of this thick cookie gives way to a pleasant doughy chew, brimming with fudge-y melted chocolate.

Big.Fat.Cookie

Big.Fat.Cookie makes chocolate chip cookies so delicious looking, it's almost a shame to eat them. Almost. They are made in very small batches with an insane amount of attention to detail—they weigh each cookie and add individual chocolate chips to be sure they're made to perfection. You can find them at retail stores throughout the city or place an order for pickup at their location on Hooker. Pick-up days are Wed.-Sat., 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Bake

A bakery that prides itself on classic American confections is bound to excel in the chocolate chip cookie department. Such is the case at Bake in Bucktown. This adorable, nostalgic Americana bakeshop peddles all the sweets that childhood dreams are made of, including exemplary chocolate chip cookies. Like the menu and motif at Bake, these cookies are pure classics, likely the closest you’ll come to mom-made cookies in Chicago, rich with notes of butter, sugar and smooth chocolate morsels.

Carol’s Cookies

Oh Carol, you temptress. Based in Highland Park, Carol’s Cookies has gotten a cult following for its football-sized cookies. (We're exaggerating a bit on the size—but barely.) With a big shipping business and wholesale business, Carol’s Cookies are not hard to come by, making it all too easy to binge on sugar and ruin appetites for dinner. The brown sugary chocolate chip cookies are the embodiment of indulgence, not only in sheer heft, but in the astounding richness compacted into every single nook and cranny.

25 Telltale Signs You’re a Proud Chicago Mom

It was another typical sleepless night of tossing and turning, unable to shut off my brain after a long day of work and managing all that comes with four active boys. I picked up my phone and searched “insomnia” on YouTube and came across a few meditations and hypnosis videos, popped my earbuds in and shut my eyes.

Meh. Not helping.

I did another search of “relaxation” and found a video of a young blonde woman entitled “sleepy time soft sounds massage” so I clicked…with hesitation, because I was unsure of what I was about to hear.

At first, I was horrified that I may have clicked on some kind of somehow-safe-for-YouTube-porn, but after viewing for a bit there was nothing sexual. Just a lovely young woman with a Russian accent whispering that she was going to brush my hair and help me get to sleep. Slightly creeped out, but desperate for some shut-eye, I closed my eyes, listened and fell asleep within minutes. Success!

The next day, I had images of my husband busting into the room showing me our internet history thinking our boys had stumbled into something they shouldn’t, only to embarrassingly admit that I was the culprit. Yes, I was the one listening to a hot Russian woman pretend to brush my hair and help me have “head tingles” to relax.

Obviously, that didn’t happen—but I wouldn’t have cared anyway because it worked. I was quickly lulled to sleep by her gentle and reassuring voice. I was hooked.

What I had stumbled across was a hugely popular, but still very underground, phenomenon called ASMR—short for “autonomous sensory meridian response.”I noticed that this one ASMR YouTuber’s channel had over a million and a half subscribers and 10 million views of this one video alone. Maybe the subscribers were mostly creepy guys, but I had to figure it was more than that.

I scanned the comments on the video and yes there were some guys, but most were regular folks suffering from stress and insomnia. I was surprised to find moms like me thanking her for allowing them to rest and for giving them a mental and emotional break. Some were coping with depression and anxiety through the videos, others would listen while undergoing treatments for cancer. I was still seized with thoughts of whether this was all kosher but nothing I saw or heard was “off” in any way.

It reminded me of years ago in when a man came to repair one of the typewriters in my high school typing class (yes, typing class). I was supposed to be doing my drills on the typewriter but found myself completely mesmerized by his thymic movements, tinkering with his tools repairing the machine in front of me that I just stopped typing and my head started to tingle, my body went limp and I just wanted to zone out.

It took every effort not to lean forward and say to him, “Can you just stay there all day and just keep doing what you’re doing because it I’m completely relaxed which is no small feat.”

Was I a total weirdo? Not really.

Many of us have had this sensation at least once and it can be triggered by a variety of things. For some it can be triggered by tapping or any repetitive movement or sound. It often happens to me when I’m sitting in church and there’s someone knitting near me. The rhythmic and repetitive tapping and clicking of the knitting needles and twisting and looping of yarn zones me right out and relaxation sets in.

For someone who just cannot shut off my brain or my body, it’s a much-needed break for my poor overworked nervous system. Isn’t every mom’s nervous system shot like mine at least on some level?

I’ve now become an ASMR aficionado and have my favorite go-to ASMR YouTubers. Instead of dreading bedtime and another night of catastrophizing about my kids, job and life, I look forward to a new ASMR adventure in relaxation. There’s no need for a trip to the spa when I can simply put on my headphones, close my eyes and just tune out.

Some videos last an hour or more, others mere minutes—so when my six-year-old and 16-year-old twins are battling it out in the living room, I can pop in my earbuds to hear someone whispering calm words or using a gentle rain stick and I can feel my blood pressure falling like the raindrop sounds on the video.

Of course, I’m usually sawing logs before it’s even over but that was the point in the first place. And it’s not like my kids would let me just pass out for a few minutes like that, anyway. That’s alright—I know I’ve got a good night’s sleep waiting for me once they’re in bed.

As a parent it can be tough to watch your child hurting, especially when you don’t know how to help them. When you see your child dealing with depression, it can feel overwhelming to get a handle on.

It may seem at times like depression is not something kids should be dealing with. How can they be depressed when I’ve tried my best to provide for them? Many parents feel guilt and shame when their child is depressed, thinking it’s the result of some shortcoming on their part.

In reality, both adults and teenagers can struggle with depression. Often times, depression has nothing to do with failing as a parent. The best thing you can do for them is to seek help and be patient.

What is Depression in Teenagers?

Unfortunately, in today’s culture, it seems that more and more young people are suffering from depression. That is why it’s incredibly important to communicate the importance of mental health to young adults.

Many teenage boys avoid seeking help for fear of looking weak. This belief can even lead to feelings of guilt, frustration, and helplessness.

During such pivotal times in a teenager’s life, it’s important for parents to teach their kid’s about depression and what the symptoms look like.

Many teenagers may not even fully realize they’re suffering from depression. If that’s the case, they’ll need your help knowing the signs. By teaching them the symptoms of depression and anxiety you can help them learn to cope with stress and overcome any mental health issues they’re tackling.

What Causes Depression in Teens?

Parents will often wonder what their kids have to be depressed about. They don’t work a 9-to-5 job, pay bills, or file taxes. They have it easy compared to the responsibilities we face as adults.

But we can’t compare our stresses with theirs. Remember what it was like to be a teenager. Teenagers don’t have the experience to understand how to cope with stress just yet. Many middle and high schoolers are feeling stress for the first time in their lives.

Teens can suffer from depression for a variety of different reasons. A common one is academic pressure. This can be from current classes, expectations to make perfect grades, or the stress of college applications.

Another common source of depression in teens is social pressure. The need to fit in and be liked can cause a lot of stress on a teen. Not being able to make friends can take a toll on their self-esteem and result in depression.

Signs That Your Teen Could Be Depressed

There are a variety of signs you should keep an eye out for that indicate your child is dealing with depression. The most common symptoms include:

  • low energy or motivation
  • overeating or undereating
  • tiredness
  • insomnia
  • poor performance at school
  • isolation

There are other signs that could also indicate depression, but if these signs persist for more than two weeks, your teen may require help.

How to Help

Each individual will process depression differently, and many teens choose to ignore their symptoms. As a parent, it’s your responsibility to get them the help they need to help tackle their depression.

You can schedule visits with a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, or therapist for medical assistance. You’ll also want to make sure you can provide a safe environment for them to talk to you. It’s important that when your teen feels depressed, they seek your advice and help.

Remind them that everyone can suffer from depression from time to time and that it takes strength and courage to get help. You can also remind them that depression is temporary and there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

Celebrity status doesn’t equal a picture-perfect pregnancy. Take Jessica Simpson’s pregnancy, another star who recently revealed that her third pregnancy isn’t exactly sunshine and rainbows. Read on for the scoop and find out how Simpson’s pregnancy might be all too relatable for many of us.

In January Simpson made us all (and by “us all” we mean the social media-verse) worry when she Instagrammed a pic of her seriously swollen foot, asking, “Any remedies?! Help!!!!” But the IG-worthy pregnancy problems didn’t stop there.

Earlier this week the celeb mama posted a selfie along with the caption, “After a month of sciatica pain, followed by 3 weeks of Bronchitis, I figured since my feet fit in my sneaks today I needed to walk out a lot of anxiety!!” As if being pregnant isn’t stressful enough, add in the swollen cankles (and feet too, of course), illness and back pain all while being in the spotlight and we totally understand why Simpson needed to “walk out a lot of anxiety.”

Oh but wait, Simpson’s soon-to-be mama times three woes didn’t end there. Apparently along with everything else, the pregnant celeb also can’t sleep. In a more recent IG post she wrote, “Walking in the rain to fight off insomnia.”

It looks like the Insta-world is here for Simpson, adding plenty of supportive comments to get the star through this tough time. One IG commenter wrote, “You got this Mama!” And we totally agree. Hey, pregnancy isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Right? But, despite the swollen feet, sciatica and lack of sleep that plenty of us (obviously including Simpson) endure, it’s sooooo worth it.
