Do you have childhood memories of listening to tape cassettes on long drives? Or maybe it was stashes of CDs in the glove box? Great audio can turn long drives with the family into exciting adventures, and podcasts are a great way to entertain and engage young minds and stimulate interesting family chats.

We’re big fans of family-friendly podcasts—we even make one ourselves called Yoto Daily! And if you’re looking for the best podcasts for kids on long road trips, then here are five of our favorites.

1. But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids If you want to spark some interesting drive-time conversations with your kids, then this is the place to start. But Why asks kids to send in their own questions, and then answers them with the help of subject matter experts. Questions vary from the small (why do ladybugs have spots?) to the big (What is the Coronavirus?) and episodes cover a wide range of subjects in between—cooking, science, language, and more. But Why is always entertaining, and breaks down complex subject matter into terms kids can understand and relate to.

2. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: This inspiring podcast isn’t just for bedtime, and it’s not just for girls! The publishers of the excellent Rebel Girls books bring some of their favorite biographies to life in the form of audio fairy tales. Each episode explores the lives of famous (and famously overlooked) women including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Frida Kahlo, and Margaret Hamilton, and will no doubt inspire some fascinating conversation in your car and beyond.

3. The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: This interstellar adventure podcast follows an 8-year-old boy, Finn Caspain, who lives on an interplanetary space station with his friends and their pet robots. Each episode is packed with sharp-witted humor and great sound effects, and the creator’s son, Griffin, makes regular guest appearances as the show’s Editor. There are over 100 episodes (around 13 hours) of this podcast available, making it perfect for enjoying over the course of a long family holiday.

4. Story Shed: When he’s not creating Yoto’s own kids’ podcast, Yoto Daily, Jake Harris is at home on the Story Shed podcast. Each episode features a new and original story for kids of all ages, often written with teachable lessons in mind – in fact, Jake was a school teacher himself before joining Yoto! Story Shed stories are great fun, often teeming with Roald Dahl-esque tension and humor. If your kids are into reading, they’ll love listening to these stories and uncovering the deeper meanings hidden within them.

5. Ear Snacks: This podcast is created by award-winning musical duo, Andrew and Polly, and explores the big wide world in all of its absurd, melodic glory. Young kids will learn about simple everyday things (rain, shadows, fruit) and delight in all the funny voices and eccentricities of the two hosts. Each episode features some terrific original tunes which will have the whole car bopping along, and submissions from listeners make the show feel relatable for young listeners.

Ben Drury is a father of two and the CEO of Yoto, a screen-free audio platform for kids.

Disney+ announced today that they have acquired Black Beauty, the latest adaptation of the beloved children’s book  written by Anna Sewell. The film is a contemporary version of the 19th century novel about a wild horse captured by humans. Black Beauty will premiere on the streaming service in late 2020.

Black Beauty

According to the film’s description, “Black Beauty is a wild mustang born free in the American west. When she is captured and taken away from her family, her story intertwines with that of 17-year old Jo Green, similarly grieving over the loss of her parents. The two slowly develop a bond that is built on love, respect and mutual healing.”

Black Beauty

“Black Beauty” features Oscar winner Kate Winslet (The Reader) as the voice of Black Beauty and stars Mackenzie Foy (Interstellar) as Jo Green; Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) as John Manly; and Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black) as Mrs. Winthorp.

Black Beauty is directed by Ashley Avis (Adolescence) who also wrote the screenplay. JB Pictures’ Jeremy Bolt (Polar, Monster Hunter) and Robert Kulzer (Polar) from Constantin Film are producers and Martin Moszkowicz, Edward Winters and Jon Brown are executive producers. Dylan Tarason is a co-producer, and Moonlighting Films president Genevieve Hofmeyr (Mad Max: Fury Road) is the South African producer.

You don’t have to be an experienced astronomer to make some interstellar discoveries. Seventeen-year-old high school student, Wolf Culkier, found a planet almost seven times bigger than Earth!

During the summer after his junior year at Scarsdale High School in New York, Culkier was participating in an internship at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. He was assigned to examine variations in star brightness captured by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and upload them to the Planet Hunters TESS citizen science project.

“I was looking through the data for everything the volunteers had flagged as an eclipsing binary, a system where two stars circle around each other and from our view eclipse each other every orbit,” Cukier said in a NASA press statement. “About three days into my internship, I saw a signal from a system called TOI 1338. At first I thought it was a stellar eclipse, but the timing was wrong. It turned out to be a planet.”

The TOI 1338 system sits 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Pictor. According to NASA, the two stars orbit each other every 15 days. One star is approximately 10 percent larger than our Sun and the other is cooler, dimmer and only one-third the Sun’s size. The planet itself, which is the only known one in the system, is about 6.9 times larger than Earth.

“These are the types of signals that algorithms really struggle with,” said lead author Veselin Kostov, a research scientist at the SETI Institute and Goddard. “The human eye is extremely good at finding patterns in data, especially non-periodic patterns like those we see in transits from these systems.”

Lucky for Culkier and NASA, he has a keen eye and was able to spot the anomaly, which turned out to be a major discovery.

If space exploration is right up your junior astronomer’s alley, you can join the hunt as well. The Planet Hunters TESS citizen science project invites anyone to help conduct real research from home. Check out the website here for more information.

As you may have heard, the Museum of Ice Cream, which stormed Manhattan’s Meatpacking District (and Instagram) in the summer of 2016, has returned to New York City! This time, it’s to stay, at a three-story building in SoHo. The creation of CEO Maryelis Bunn and co-founder Manish Vora, The new Museum of Ice Cream features 13 new installations across 25,000 square feet, as well as a cafe serving up original ice cream creations and a MOIC gift shop. It’s bigger this time around, and we think, even more of a kid crowdpleaser. Scroll down to see the pics from our recent visit (warning: spoilers ahead).

We All Scream for Ice Cream

Mimi O'Connor

The Museum of Ice Cream has returned, occupying a storefront at 558 Broadway. Unlike it's previous incarnation in the Meatpacking District, this one is here to stay. (It's right up the street from the slime-inspired Sloomoo Institute if you want to make a day of colorful interactive pop-up experiences.) It is, of course, a celebration of ice cream, but the themes of imagination, cooperation and just plain fun are woven throughout the colorful immersive rooms.

Pick Your Name

The first step of the experience is to pick an "ice cream name" and make a name tag. There are suggestions to get your creative juices flowing: "Demi Gelato", "Taylor Split", "Justin Freezer" etc.

Friends Along the Way

Mimi O'Connor

Next up a wacky ice cream parlor of sorts, where ice cream baristas serve up a bowl with a sweet treat to get you started. Throughout the museum, you'll encounter assorted MOIC characters, like this lady, who did a bit of singing from her mini stage. (Thumbs up to the wallpaper here.)

Trippy Tea Party

Dubbed "Oh Yah", this room is inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The table "floats" with the aid of pink balloons, and features a spread of delectable treats—only some of which you can eat. (But you are encouraged to do so!)

Room of Rooms

Mimi O'Connor

Next is the "Room of Rooms", with little surprises behind curtains and doors (including a very tiny little disco party!)

All Aboard

Mimi O'Connor

Then hop the train to "Starlem" on an interstellar "subway." (Be sure to grab "The Inside Scoop" newspaper from a box before you  board. The paper has some fun puzzles, recipes, an "ice cream scopes.")

Just Chill

Mimi O'Connor

Exit the train and enter a soothing space with swirling clouds to gaze at.

Duck and Jump

Mimi O'Connor

Pass an ombre banana installation (photos don't do it justice) and make your way to a "sprinkle cake" you can step inside of (kids will find this much easier than adults) and a mini pink bouncy house—also a real kid pleaser.

Stop for a Stretch

Mimi O'Connor

Pass through a room where you can spell out what you're grateful for (as well as other positive sentiments) on magnetized walls, and then stop for a taste of stretchy ice cream.

Make Some Music

Mimi O'Connor

A music-themed room features huge keyboards that you can play by pulling ropes attached to the keys, as well as turntables for trying your hand at mixing some tunes.

Strike a Pose

Mimi O'Connor

This rainbow hallway is incredible in person (and also makes for a nice photo op/selfie.)

Slip Slide Away!

Mimi O'Connor

You can grab a sliding sack to get maximum speed down the spiral ice cream slide. (We went without and it was plenty fast!) You can also take an elevator to the next room if you're not feeling up for it.

The Ice Cream Cave

Mimi O'Connor

Your thrilling ride down ends in this glowing, soothing space meant to resemble melting ice cream dubbed, "New World."

Time to Play

Mimi O'Connor

There's another original ice cream flavor to sample just off the dimly-lit cave, and then you head to a massive, colorful ice cream-themed playground. Swings, jungle gym structures, basketball with "ice cream cone" baskets and a sort of sandbox filled with faux ice cream cones.

Sprinkle Pool 2.0

Mimi O'Connor

The grand finale, the Sprinkle Pool, is bigger, and is filled with larger sprinkles this time around. "Maraschino cherries" are cast about for extra sprinkle pool highjinks.

Here's the Scoop

Mimi O'Conor

Tickets are $39 per person, and kids under two are free. You can get tickets at the door if they're available, but it's a good idea to buy your ticket online ahead of time. (They are sold in half-hour increments.) Estimate an hour to 90 minutes to navigate the whole thing.

Of course, there are plenty of Museum of Ice Cream-related products and gifts to snap up here, from branded water bottles and ice cream scoops to earrings, stuffed unicorns and glam accessories. (You can also buy pints of the custom-created flavors, which include Churro Churro, Pinata, and Queen Bee, the last of which, a honey-flavored treat being served here, is no doubt a nod to what is the inaugural MOIC's most famous visitors, Beyoncé—with Blue Ivy, of course.)
