New Year’s Eve hits different when you’re a mom. We may not be able to stay up until midnight on New Year’s Eve to party and watch the ball drop, but we are serious about keeping our New Year’s resolutions. Here are five #newmom resolutions for the new year—and clutch advice to help you stick to those goals.

iStock

1. The Resolution: Be Present
Spending hours scrolling mindlessly through your social media is so last year. Be more present with the tiny people who need you and adore you. Put down your phone and play peekaboo, blow raspberries, talk and coo to your baby, and play games with the older kids. You will catch all sorts of firsts and milestones, as well as smiles and giggles.

How to Make It Happen: Worried the electronic force is too strong? Allow yourself phone check-in points throughout the day, but only after you've spent quality time with your little one(s). Set a timer for each scrolling sesh to keep yourself from getting sucked into the Internet too deep. Also, make use of your phone's do-not-disturb feature to silence notifications so you won't get distracted.

2. The Resolution: Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough rest (is that even a thing?) is crucial for physical and mental health, especially when you're a new mom. But how? And when? Sleep when the baby sleeps, we're told. Easy to say but tough to do.

How to Make It Happen: As the primary life source for a tiny human, the idea of getting 8 hours of sleep every night probably sounds like a crazy dream. (If you slept long enough to have dreams, that is.) When babies are little, it's important to go for quality over quantity. Create a space that's conducive to rest, just as you've done for your baby: Invest in blackout curtains; keep your room a comfortable temperature (60-67 is optimal); spritz sheets with lavender linen spray; and, most importantly, make your phone off-limits at least two hours before bedtime. Use that phone-free time to wind down—brew a cup of caffeine-free tea, catch up on a favorite book, or soak in the tub.

3. The Resolution: Leave the House Alone
It’s easy to turn into a mama kangaroo and keep that little one attached to you 24/7. But absence can make your mother’s heart grow fonder—and give you a chance to feel like a human again, even if it’s only for a couple of hours. One night a month (or whatever schedule works for your life), plan to slip on something pretty, head out with your partner or friends, and linger over dinner and drinks.

How to Make It Happen: Book a sitter for a standing Saturday night once a month for the rest of the year. Or take turns with your partner so you can each go out with friends. Scheduling in advance will help you stick to your resolution, especially on those nights when you feel like crawling into your pajamas and collapsing onto the couch. (Don’t worry: You can do that all the other nights of the month.)

4. The Resolution: Shower Every Day
You know that amazing just-stepped-out-of-the-shower feeling of clean? The one you felt a few days ago? How amazing would life be if you could experience the renewing power of a hot shower every single day? (Answer: Pretty darn amazing.)

How to Make It Happen: Make your baby part of the act by pulling a bouncy seat or exersaucer into the bathroom or laying out a cushy baby blanket on the floor with a few toys. If baby starts to fuss, sing your baby's favorite songs to keep your little one entertained and scrub on.

5. The Resolution: Treat Yourself Right
Self-care. We hear it all the time for good reason: You need to love yourself well so you can love those around you well, including your tiny human. If you're going to keep one resolution this year, make it this one.

How to Make It Happen: Expand your definition of self-care. Sure, it can mean indulging in candle-lit bubble baths and chocolate, but real self-care includes opting for carrot sticks instead of potato chips, going to sleep instead of staying up too late watching TV, or doing that 20-minute workout when you’d so much rather chill with a cup of coffee. Those are the little changes that will help you be the best mom and the best you all year long.

Are those Beanie Babies with the tag protectors just chilling in your parents’ basement? On your next trip home, you might want to pull them out and take a look. Nine different beloved Ty beanies have sold for at least $15,000 (!) today, according to a new study from TheToyZone.

Topping the list is Rainbow the Chameleon Beanie Baby from 1997, which sold for an eye-popping $50,000 on Ebay. Next up, two Valentine’s Day beanies: Valentina (with errors) from 1997 at $29,999 and Valentino from 1994 at $25,003. Pouch the Kangaroo from 1996 comes in at $19,000, the popular rare edition Princess Di Bear from 1997 at $18,950 and the Canadian Maple Bear from 1997 (with spelling errors) at $18,000. Three others come in at $15,000: Curly the Bear, Pattie the Platypus and Peanut the Royal Blue Elephant.

Beanies aren’t the only valuable toys from the ’90s. If you had a Nintendo 64, you probably had the classic, Goldeneye 007. A copy recently sold for $14,499 online! A mint Talkboy based off the film Home Alone 2 was worth $30 in the ’90s, but sells for up to $10,000 today. And if you lucked into an original American Girl doll, they’re worth some cash too. A 1991 Felicity was valued at $7,820.

TheToyZone used Mavin, an online price guide to determine how much money the toys sold for, collecting data in March 2021. Only toys sold individually, as opposed to in sets or multiples, were included and presumably they are all in mint condition. You can read the rest of the lengthy list on their website and start making a mental list of your childhood collection. You might luck into a small fortune!

I’ll never forget the day I truly felt affirmed in my job. I have a unique role as a teacher, life coach, and mentor all wrapped up in one. One afternoon I was sitting across from one of my 10-year-old clients helping her with her homework and out of the blue she said, “Lindsay, you are like a kangaroo.” At first I thought she was suggesting that I looked like this Australian marsupial, but she continued, saying, “You are like a kangaroo because you keep all your students safe and warm in your pouch and when they are ready, you let them go.” I was struck by the sincerity of the compliment and touched because it came from one of my shyest most sensitive young girls.  She spoke few words, but noticed everything.

That day I felt very grateful and also so validated in my choice to follow my heart’s desire to create my company, Bold New Girls, a coaching company for girls and young women that integrates my two biggest passions: learning and social and emotional development. I realized early on in my teaching career the tremendous value and power of connection. At the time, before I knew the science, I simply felt that when I spent time talking to girls about what was happening in their world and what was on their minds, they seemed to calm down and feel heard and understood. This was it, the heart of connection: when an intentional relationship is built on trust, it provides a safe space for girls to experience care, compassion, and unconditional acceptance.

When I decided to write my book Growing Strong Girls, I delved deeper into the brain science behind connection. When we connect with girls and show them we are not only physically present and paying attention but emotionally present, too, the brain produces “feel good” chemicals such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. When neurons in the brain fire together, they wire together. This means when she is stressed and decides to share her troubles with us and we meet her with a hug and some soothing, reassuring words we help her feel calm. With this kind of repeated experience, her brain grows stress response centers capable of self-regulation and the right kind of neurological wiring that is conducive to optimal growth and healthy development.

So, when my shy client told me I was a kangaroo what she was really expressing was her felt sense of our connection and interconnectedness. She felt safe in my pouch!

When I tell parents connection is the foundation for strength, the necessary ingredient for shaping girls into secure, confident, brave, and courageous young women, my advice is based on life experience (and science).

Parents I work with know the power of cultivating connection. They also know the scary statistics about girls today that suggest a widespread disconnection: rising mental health concerns, social media obsession and often addiction, and reports that 9 out of 10 girls are dissatisfied with their appearance. It can be overwhelming, confusing, and frightening to know what girls are up against.

We all wonder if we have what it takes to keep a girl on the right path. The primary question we need to explore is how to create connection with her — especially when her emotions can seem like a ride on a roller coaster and you just can’t seem to find the words or the ways with her these days. Here are some ideas you can try to cultivate connection:

1) Use your best tool: Empathy. When she walks into the kitchen after a long, stressful day at school, connect with her on an emotional level first. Try saying, “Seems like you’ve had a tough day — feel like talking about it or do you need time to relax?” When she tells you about her friendship troubles, make comments like, “I understand how frustrated you must feel — that makes sense to me.” When you connect with how she is feeling, not only are you helping her calm down and find her center, but you are allowing her to feel heard and validated.

2) Be curious instead of critical. Preteen girls are hypersensitive to even a hint of criticism and rejection. Knowing this, ask open questions to open up the conversation. Avoid the typical “How was your day,” to which you’ll receive the typical response, “fine”. Be creative and surprise her. Ask her about the 3 highlights of her day, if she is excited or looking forward to anything, or if she could rewind her day what part she would redo. The goal is to learn about what’s happening for her and to get her talking.

3) Enter her world. So often, we all launch into a “to-do” list and push our own agenda: “I need you to pick up your brother,” “Remember to clean your room tonight.” “Did you do your homework?” Instead, try to enter her world and talk about what matters most to her. Ask her about what’s happening with friends and who she is connecting with or disconnecting from. Ask her if she saw any interesting posts or comments on social media, or ask her what she posted. Inquire about any stressors or triggers at school — something a teacher or peer may have said to her. Yes, the to-do list is important and chores and homework need to get completed, but remember to put your relationship first.

4) Be generous. This is a simple one but so often forgotten. Be generous with your compliments, your kindness, what you notice about her growth, and the ways in which you see her making positive and healthy choices. So much of a girl’s day is about being corrected. Why not notice what she’s doing right and encourage her to keep up the good work?

Girls are longing for connection and if we don’t provide it, they will seek it elsewhere — in chat rooms and on social media, from peers, sometimes even from strangers. Yet, when we consistently make time for her to connect with us and give her the chance to unburden herself at the end of the day and share her inner landscape with us, we create a safe and secure foundation on which she can grow into her own confidence, strength, and independence. We don’t have a girl in our pouch for long, so we want to make this time count by investing in our connection with her before she is read to leap out.

When you’re in those early weeks of new motherhood, you’ll do pretty much anything to get baby to sleep. 4moms, the brand behind the popular mamaRoo infant seat, is set to introduce a new product into their line of innovative baby gear to help parents (and baby) score a few more moments of precious sleep. Read on to learn all about the new mamaRoo sleep bassinet and why it might be a good fit for your family.

The Scoop
Whether your baby prefers rocking or enjoys a bouncing sensation, there’s no denying that she likes movement. After all, she was in the womb for 10 months being soothed by your body’s natural rhythms and motion.

The brand-new 4moms mamaRoo sleep bassinet, set to debut in early 2020, tries to mimic these movements. The bassinet features five motions: car ride, wave, kangaroo, tree swing and rock-a-bye, along with vibration, four different white noise options, and five different speed options.

Additional features worth noting:
• Safety is your #1 priority, and 4moms shares your perspective. That’s why they’ve ensured the bassinet’s firm and flat sleep surface adheres to the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) Safe Sleep Guidelines. Even the bassinet’s featureslike height adjust for optimal visibility and accessibility, as well as mesh sidesall create a safe sleep environment for your little.

• Control the bassinet from your smartphone by downloading the 4moms app. You can control the motion, speed, vibration and sounds. Or, use the app to set a timer to help establish a consistent bedtime routine.

• Optional opportunity to purchase a storage basket, sold separately.

The new mamaRoo sleep bassinet is appropriate for babies up to 25 pounds or until your child can push up on her hands or knees (whichever comes first). Retail price is $329.99, and it will be available in early 2020 at 4moms.com and Bed Bath & Beyond, with further retail distribution in spring 2020.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Baby Sleep Success

5 Sleep Expert Tips to Get Your Baby’s Sleep Habits Back on Track

These Are All the Things Parents are Willing to Give Up For a Little More Sleep

photo: Lulla Doll/ Facebook

When you’re a sleep-deprived mombie you’ll try pretty much anything to get your tot to stop bouncing off the walls and just go to sleep. If that describes your current situation to a “T”, then you’re definitely going to want to check out this new doll that promises to help your kids (and you) get a good night’s sleep. Read on to find out more about how you can get your exhausted hands on one immediately.

The magical sleep-promising Lulla Doll was developed by an Icelandic mom and psychologist, Eyrún Eggertsdóttir. When the soft doll’s chest is pressed it plays the sounds of breathing and a heart beating, recorded from a real mom. The idea is based on research involving kangaroo care in which infants and small children are soothed by the sounds and smells that mimic a mother. A baby’s own breathing and heartbeat will stabilize in rhythm with the mother’s allowing them to sleep more peacefully (aka much longer).

But does it actually work? According to the rave reviews it’s been getting across the internet, all signs point to yes. The doll, which started as an Indiegogo funded project, exploded onto the mainstream marketplace. While it was sold out for quite a while, and even managed to cause an eBay commotion, with dolls selling for as much as $350 (desperate times), it’s finally back in stock. You can find it on Amazon, where it retails for around $89, or buy it directly from the Lulla website, where there are currently less than 1,000 dolls available, selling for $71 each.

Do you have one of the Lulla dolls and has it helped? Share your experience in the comments!

A relaxing day spent at a waterpark? Could it be? Crikey! For those moms and dads that dread a day at a chaotic, overcrowded waterpark, just say g’day to Aussie-themed Raging Waves. Sneak in one more (or maybe two!) weekends of wet fun before we round the corner to fall and bid farewell to pool time.

Located in far west suburban Yorkville, less than an hour away from Chicago, this Aussie-themed waterpark is spacious — it sits on over 45 acres — clean and almost never overcrowded. Plenty of attractions are just right for both the little and bigger kids in your family, while parents will appreciate the many lifeguards on duty, comfy, shaded and sun-filled lounge chair areas and private cabanas. Here’s our guide to Raging Waves Waterpark, Illinois’ largest outdoor waterpark.

How to Get There
Raging Waves Waterpark is Yorkville on Route 47, about 45 minutes west of Chicago via I-88. General parking is free, but there is also preferred parking (which is closer to the entrance gate) available for $7.00/car.

Safety First
Raging Waves has certified lifeguards posted at each and every attraction. For safety’s sake, some of the slides have height restrictions: For guests 48″ tall or taller, there are no restrictions (except in areas designed for young children). For those less than 48″ tall there are slide restrictions and the admission price is reduced.

Little Ones
The tots in your family will want to head straight to Koala Kove, where two slides, a minimal-depth pool and tipping toucans are ready for hours of splashworthy fun. You could spend an entire afternoon at this mini-waterpark within a waterpark. Kangaroo Falls is a four-story water fort where kids can race down the slides, hop across the bridges, and play in the squirting fountains; beware of the ringing bell which signals that the giant bucket holding 750 gallons of water is about to tip over! Little ones are invited to test their sand digging and castle building skills at Brock’s Giant Sandbox, a huge sand play area that also features mini New Holland construction diggers for budding sand builders.

Big Ones
Kids 48″ or taller will want to make a beeline for the Cyclone, a slide that mimics being flushed down a toilet bowl. The Tasmanian Twisters are super-fast tube slides that whisk riders on a completely dark free-fall down into the splash pool at the bottom. Raging Waves is also one of just three waterparks in the United States to have the popular, new ride “Wonambi”, a jaw dropping, slide that zips a four-person raft into high speed, near-vertical position, giving you that lovely zero-gravity feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Fun for the Entire Family
Everyone in your family will love taking a relaxing tube ride down the quarter mile long Kookaburra Kreek Lazy River. If your little one finally meets the 42″ height requirement and wants to test out a waterslide for the very first time with mom or dad by their side, hop on a four-person raft and take a slide down Crocodile Mile, a 600-foot-long family raft ride that will have you twisting and turning and laughing out loud.

Where to Eat
Raging Waves offers two restaurants and multiple snack carts throughout the park, all serving standard park fare (think hot dogs and chicken nuggets). Surfside Subs offers Jersey Mike’s Subs on freshly baked bread, a welcome lunch option best eaten on a picnic bench overlooking the lazy river.

No outside food or beverages are permitted except factory-sealed water bottles, if you want to bring lunch from home, pack a cooler. Several picnic tables are located in the park’s parking lot and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Make sure to get your hand stamped at the entrance upon exiting the park, so you can re-enter when you are finished with your meal.

Tips
