“We had been talking about it loosely, and then COVID happened, and we were just like, ‘Let’s see what happens,’” she shared before admitting that she got pregnant right away.

“You still want to remind people that life is important,” she said, “And being able to have a child…I’m knocking at 40’s door in February. Taking care of myself means a lot to me.”

Thoughts of a Motherless Mom on Mother’s Day…

Superpowers:

Since you passed away, I’ve discovered I have a superpower, an ability that saves me when a sea of grief threatens to swallow me up whole. It’s simple, yet profound, like oxygen to lungs that burn for breath.

It was granted to me the day you died. And, although it never gets easy, it grows stronger with time and helps me survive in this world without you, when doing so feels impossible.

I have the power to shift, and I’ve mastered it…most days.

I can shift my mind to other things, my attention elsewhere. ANYWHERE. Except the thought that you’re gone, nowhere to be found on this earth. I’ll never hear your voice again or feel the warmth of your embrace this side of Heaven.

On any given normal day, I’m really good at shifting. But, on Mother’s Day, I find it nearly impossible. And, honestly, I dread it.

A Tsunami:

Reminders of you are EVERYWHERE. From the heart-wrenching, Mom commercials that leave me reeling, like this one from Gatorade a few years back, to the store ads and the card aisle…even strolling through HEB isn’t safe!!

I can’t escape the memories that flood my mind like a tsunami, emerging without warning, reminding me that no matter how hard I search for you, you’ll never be found. I’ll never buy another Mother’s Day card again.

HOW DO I DO THIS WITHOUT YOU?!!

Sadness engulfs me. I can hardly breathe as waves of grief crash relentlessly over me, knocking me down and sweeping me under again and again. Warm tears stream down my face.

Then suddenly I hear a voice in the distance….

“Mom, are you okay?”

…and in that moment I feel it. A shift. It’s happening.

A mother arises where a daughter once stood.

An Unexpected Rescue:

It turns out there’s a force even greater than the waves of grief that threaten to consume me right up. It’s the greatest superpower of all.

LOVE.

Love that comes from the ones who call ME Mom, who are here, right now, excited to celebrate with ME on Mother’s Day. As much as I long for days passed, I know what you’d say. It’s time to shift into the present, to soak up MY time of being celebrated as a mom and enjoy every minute of it before it’s gone. And, as always, you’d be right.

Waves calm. Deep breath. Now shift.

Although my soul will never stop aching to see you one last time or call you and hear your sweet voice, I will choose to take hold of this force that’s more powerful than grief. One you taught me well. I will choose to shift my gaze to what’s up ahead, rather than focusing on what’s behind. And, I will honor you by loving my children well.

So that one day, when it’s my turn to leave this earth behind, and they must face Mother’s Day without me, they will be able to shift, too. Not because they won’t miss me, but because they will have the very same power within them that I have today. A legacy of LOVE that you left behind. One that will be passed down for generations to come.

The love of a Mother is a powerful force to be reckoned with.

The federal government has hundreds of thousands of temporary U.S. Census jobs open. And we’ve got the scoop on how to score one for yourself.

Preparations for the 2020 U.S. Census are already under way. Even though preliminary operations don’t start until August, the government agency in charge of tallying up the nation is gearing up to scout specific locations, identifying where people do or could live. Following this Address Canvassing stage (which is set to conclude in October 2019), the Bureau will mail out 2020 Census invitations. To accomplish this stage, the Census Bureau needs temporary workers.

The Census Bureau’s hiring phase will last throughout the next year. New hires will start canvassing in the spring and summer of 2020, knocking on the doors of those who didn’t reply to the initial invitation. Along with these field jobs, the government is also hiring a limited number of Census office positions.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that as of Mar. 4 over 170,000 potential hires have already filled out job applications. So far, the government has hired more than 800 new employees. If landing a 2020 Census job sounds good to you, visit 2020census.gov/jobs to apply. You can also call 855-JOB-2020 and select option 3 for more job-related information. For Dads without Paternity Leave, Dove Wants to Help—with $5,000 Grants

We’ve all been to (or hosted) the standard kids’ birthday party — the one with the gym activity or the dance party or the art project, followed by the standard pizza, cake and balloons. We’re not knocking any of those options, but this is NYC, where standard gets kicked to the curb. For those that want a fete that’s creative, eco-friendly and fun, read on to find out why Flower Girl NYC is the perfect spot.

Not Your Average Flower Shop
As fashionable as its lower east side locale, Flower Girl NYC creates edgy, yet romantic floral arrangements. While the offerings for kids are new, the shop it not; owner Denise Porcaro has producing beautiful bouquets at the downtown location for 14 years. Kids’ parties might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you see the flowers here, but look closely and you’ll find an aesthetic kids can really wrap their heads around — or, more to the point, a floral headband they can.

Because each arrangement created here is unique, loose and decidedly not-perfect, kids can learn to create here without feeling judged, and can have a great time doing it. There’s a whimsical quality to the beautiful blooms, which pairs perfectly with the types of projects kids can make here.

Looking for a fun baby shower idea? Porcaro has plans to host parties for adults, too. “I have always had the idea to host parties, and I think being creative to both adults and children alike is so important,” she says.

Projects Full of Posies
Everyone loves a little floral DIY, especially when you get to take home your creation. Projects range from flower crowns to wilderness wands to building terrariums and posy bouquets. Children 10 and up can also make flower arrangements for an additional cost. Have a flower project  or theme in mind? The folks at Flower Girl NYC welcome customer ideas and will help design a project that is creative and fun for kids to create.

The Details
Parties are held on Sundays in one of two time slots: 11a.m.-1p.m., or 3-5p.m. Each celebration includes a 35-minute guided activity, the child’s name in flowers to take home, and all the utensils you need for food and beverages, as well as set-up and clean-up.

Parties are $700 for six kids, and $45 for each additional child. Flower Girl NYC can assist you in finding kid-friendly vendors to supplement the party with food, beverages and sweets. Add-ons such as flower crowns and face painting are available at an additional cost. To find out how Flower Girl NYC can customize the space for your party, email info@flowergirlnyc.com.

My daughter is weird. Yes, she’s also incredibly bright, precocious, and kind, but she’s undeniably weird. Granted, a lot of people don’t see Anna’s behavior as weird. Those who don’t spend as much time with her as we do probably just see a 10-year-old with an active imagination, but when you live with her, day in and day out, you would agree that she’s weird.

Understand this: I’m not necessarily using the word “weird” in a derogatory way. She’s not a “lurk in the bushes outside of your house and peep in your windows” kind of weird. But, she IS a “rub against your shoulder and purr in your ear” kind of weird.

You see, my daughter is always an animal. Always. Ever since she was a toddler, she’s loved to play like she was an animal. Now, at the age of 10, it’s still consistently her favorite thing to do. While other kids are playing with their American Girl dolls, Anna is playing with her stuffed animals. While other kids were playing dress up in ratty Disney princess ballgowns from Target, Anna was playing dragon with a homemade felt dragon tail and wings.

But this behavior has not always been so cute. There was the one time that my husband and I caught her licking a strange dad’s leg in the kiddie pool at a resort. She was pretending to be a dog and this kind man was playing along…until she started licking his shin. It ranks as one of the most horrific things I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to say who was more uncomfortable–us or the stranger. The good news is that this episode opened up the dialog about licking strangers and where to draw the line on animal games.

Over the years, I’ve made some mistakes in dealing with Anna’s imagination. I’ve had to learn as I go and consequently have come up with a few helpful tips for other parents who might be dealing with a slightly eccentric child:

1. Teach your child that there’s a time and place to let their “freak flag fly.”

I’ve learned to strike deals with Anna. For instance: she needs to be a human in church every Sunday, but is welcome to gallop all over the house like a horse (or whatever creature de jour she’s pretending to be) for the rest of the day on Sunday. She seems OK with this and it works for me too.

2. Try not to make your child feel any weirder than they already are.

I’m 100% sure that Anna has been called “weird” at school and, I’ve been known to call her a “little weirdo” (with only love in my heart) to her face, but by and large, I try to let her know that we love her no matter how she is and that won’t change. We’ve also stressed that “weird” isn’t a bad thing and now she seems to take it as a compliment.

3. Recognize that the current strange stage is just that: a stage.

The preteen years are rattling at our shutters and knocking on our door right now. There are times when I see a flash of teenage rage in my 10-year-old’s eyes, and then, before I know it, she’s back to her sweet, 4th-grade self. But I know that in a couple of years, we’ll be longing for the days when it was simpler and she was just a cat, trapped in a 10-year-old girl’s body, and not an angry teen.

4. Don’t try to change them.

Chances are, if you try and change their behaviors, you’ll only make it worse—believe me, I’ve tried. As long as your child isn’t doing something that’s harmful to themselves or others, I say, let them do what they need to do to be happy. There aren’t enough kids getting to be themselves these days, if you ask me.

5. Don’t try and over-explain your kid to others.

So many times, when Anna has been in full-blown cat-mode in public, I’d try to explain her actions to people, “Anna is pretending to be a cat today. She loves cats and it’s her favorite game to play. She’s not always a cat though…she’s actually really bright and caring too!” The thing is, most people find children who are using an active imagination endearing and, to strangers who don’t live with it, it is cute and harmless. So, I’ve stopped trying to justify her behavior and just let it all happen naturally. Nine times out of ten, people say something along the lines of, “My son used to pretend to be a fireman all the time when he was that age.”

One of the harder things about being the parent of a weird kid is worrying about what other parents think of her and how that reflects on me as a parent. What I’ve learned though is that, as with everything else in life, it doesn’t matter what others think of you and also that most people think it’s really cool that we let her be who she is and don’t try to change her.

Now that I’m in the thick of parenting, I finally understand how fleeting childhood is. I’m proud of Anna’s confidence and the fact that she doesn’t give a flip what anyone thinks about her–that she’s willing to be who she wants to be and readily accepts others for their quirks as a result. One day, I know that we’ll look back on this age and have only fond memories of a little girl who loved animals so much that she wanted to be one. The way I see it, there are definitely worse parenting problems to have.

I'm Jenny, a married mother to two kids and a whole gaggle of pets. I quit drinking in 2010 when I realized that alcohol was calling too many of the shots in my life and turning me into a person that I wasn't proud of. I haven't looked back.

We’re teaming up with Blue Shield of California to celebrate local LA moms who have inspired us to seek healthy, balanced lives.  This week, meet Kimberley Blaine, executive producer of the www.TheGoToMom.TV.

As a survivor of childhood domestic violence, Kimberley vowed to change the support available for new moms.  Her online based videos at TheGoToMom.tv tackle everything from nutrition for fussy eaters to kids’ hygiene (We all know the hardships of teeth brushing and nail trimming!)

Kimberley is a mentor and advocate for living each day with empathy and a solid community – and her two boys have proven, she’s knocking it out of the park!

Red Tricycle: You’re part of a group of moms that are on a serious mission.  What’s yours?
Kimberley Blaine:  Our mission is to improve the quality of life for moms, their children and their families overall, keeping in mind that children’s health and well-being is a top priority—but that it should also be a priority for moms too!   Our parenting segments are committed to educating and advocating for families with young children.

RT:  Your TV shows are informative and insightful.  What inspired you to start them?
KB: I remember feeling really lonely as a new mom.  There were days that I felt really isolated and I had so many questions. I found other moms were feeling the same way, and so we grew to include over 70 families.  Once I saw a true need for this level of community – the idea for TheGoToMom.tv came to life.

RT: It goes without saying that your kids are actively engaged in what you do.
KB:   It’s been fascinating to watch my children grow as TheGoToMom.TV did.  I make a point to teach my children that we are a family who is here to help others.  Empathy and consideration are a big part of our family values. There is a lesson every day in teaching your children that they are a part of being a socially responsible human.

RT:  That’s serious business but I’m sure there’s been a lot of humor along the way too.
KB:  Yes!  This is really embarrassing!  But my youngest, after watching one of my TV segments, turned to me and said, “Mom!  You’re such a show-off on TV!”  I don’t think he was used to seeing me in that environment.

RT:  There are other moms out there who want to impact their community in the same way you’ve done.  Any advice?
RB:  I really encourage other moms to find what makes them happy and hone in on their vision. Research is hugely important.  Who is doing what you’re thinking of, already?  How well are they doing it?  In the end, try to develop your idea a bit differently.  And as the old Nike saying goes, “Just Do It!”

Be Like Kimberley!  Blue Shield of California’s Wellness Challenge:
Positive emotional well-being—from compassion to empathy— is a tenet of wellness. And passing those values onto your children is of utmost importance.  Says Kimberley:  “When my son was in 1st grade, he witnessed a classmate being bullied.  Instead of being afraid, my son stepped in to help.  It was then that I realized he was learning what it meant to act empathetically and selflessly.”

Blue Shield of California is an independent member of the Blue Shield Association.
