Your body has done some amazing things over the past few months, more than anything, it has created and give birth to a tiny human! As your baby grew, your body cleverly accommodated it but for many, even most women, the abdominal muscles will have accepted some degree of separation to allow for your growing bump. This is totally normal and with the right approach and the right exercises, these muscles will find their way back together.

Let’s start with breathing! For a lot of post natal mums, the art of breathing and engaging the core muscles correctly requires some reminding and retraining. It is hugely important to restore good breathing techniques in order to form a foundation for which to grow on. There are a number of disciplines of exercise that rely on correct and proper breathing techniques and this is by no means just about fueling the body with oxygen, it is actually to make sure that you can properly connect with the core muscles as day to day movement relies on correct core engagement. By starting with a good breathing technique, you will lay the foundations for a stronger core.

How to Breathe Correctly

  • Start by lying on your back with one hand on your tummy and the other hand on the side of your ribcage
  • Breathe deeply into your tummy and into the side of the ribcage feeling your tummy rise and your ribcage expand
  • As you breathe out, you should feel your tummy relax

Once you have mastered this and you are sure you are activating your pelvic floor muscles you can move onto movement based exercises below.

Hip Bridges: Aim to do 2 sets of 12 reps

  • Lying on your back bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor
  • Raise the hips off the floor squeezing your glutes (bum) and activating your pelvic floor muscles
  • Hold at the top for a few seconds then relax back down to neutral position

Squats: Aim to do 2 sets of 12 reps

  • Start with your feet hip width apart
  • Breathe in as you sit back into the squat as if to sit onto a chair
  • Keep a neutral back throughout with weight evenly distributed through your heels
  • Squeeze your bum to stand back upright to starting position

Half Press Ups: Aim to do 2 sets of 8 reps

  • Start on your knees with your hands under your shoulders
  • Knees, hips and shoulders should all be aligned
  • Breathe in as you bend your elbows wide and lower the chest to the floor
  • Keep your head aligned with your spine
  • Breathe out as you push yourself back to the starting position

Remember only even do as much as you feel you can do, listen to your body and ease into it.

Checking your tummy gap (Diastasis Recti): Understanding your own tummy gap, core and pelvic floor activation levels is key to fully restoring your postpartum strength and fitness. Remember that everyone is unique and everyone’s starting point is personal. For more physiotherapist led core series including Diastasis check and scar massage check out CariFit.

There’s One Exercise That Could Make the Mom Pouch Go Away & We’re So Trying It
Genius At-Home Fitness Hacks for Busy Parents
10 Workouts New Moms Can Do at Home

I have been helping new moms get back into exercise for over a decade. Dubbed the "baby man" after carrying the babies for moms whilst they exercised, I saw that by merging babywearing and fitness, we could remove the barriers to exercise and I launched CARiFiT 6 years ago!

It is no secret that military men and women sacrifice a tremendous amount for our country and our freedom. Army, Navy, Air force, Marines, Coastguard, National Guard, all have a unique mission, but make sacrifices some cannot even fathom.

Their children however never even signed up for this life but make daily sacrifices as well and deserve to be recognized. April is Month of the Military Child! We proudly celebrate this month in our household because my children are military children. They have had to be resilient beyond their years at times and have risen to the occasion and overcome many challenges in their short life.

They have lived in three states in the past five years, gone a full year without their Dad at home, and just recently have been told they will be leaving Columbia and moving again this summer. They were not too happy about that and kept asking “Why?” The “Why” is because their Dad is in the military and unfortunately we have very little say in where we live; something that gets increasingly more challenging as kids get older.

My children made it very clear they love where we live. They love their school, friends, and neighborhood and they don’t want to move. Sadly it’s just part of military life and I would be lying if I said all of the upcoming changes didn’t keep me up at night. My kids don’t get to have that consistency other kids may have and that is very difficult. I moved around a lot growing up as well so I can relate to these big feelings. Having to start over in a new state is difficult at any age. The unknown can be scary. But if there’s one thing military children are—it is resilient!

They learn from a very young age that plans can change at any time and they have to make the best of an otherwise tough situation. When the military calls, their parent may leave for a few weeks, months, or even a year. So many feelings and emotions surround being a military family and I teach my children that it is healthy to talk about the struggles and to find others who can relate. Reaching out and finding other military children with similar experiences can be the biggest blessing in not feeling so alone on this journey.

There are of course so many positives to being a military child. For starters, my children get to live in many different places and see different parts of the country they otherwise would not even know existed. They have recently also learned about F16s up close and even sat in the cockpit during a special family day on base. This is a unique experience and one they will cherish for years to come.

As they get older my children are becoming more aware of the unique sacrifices their Dad makes and have great pride in what he does. They admire and look up to him and other men and women in uniform. He is their hero and I hope they grow up with a sense of pride and honor in being a military child. So this month and every month let’s celebrate the thousands of brave military children across the globe and the important role they play in our communities.

Caitlyn is a military spouse and mom to three children and one fur baby. She was an elementary school counselor before becoming a stay at home who enjoys coffee, hiking, and playing in the dirt with her kids.

Get your backyard ready for the summer heat. The Sunsquad Rainbow Blobz Water-Filled Splash Pad will keep your kids entertained and cooled-off for hours. This unique play area offers a cool surface for playing or lying on while enjoying a day in the sun.

Simply fill the Blobz up with water through the nozzle on the top to create a fun, cool play surface. An internal chamber and beam keeps the Blobz stable.

7 Reasons a Camper Van Rental Should Be Your Next Family Adventure

It has been over two months since I have written a blog post. I wish I could say that it’s because I was having so much fun with my family during this global pandemic that I didn’t have time to write.

But that would be a lie.

I have seen so many women posting about how wonderful quarantine has been at home with their families. That even though things have gotten rough, they are making it through and coming out on the other side of this a much better person overall. They have succulents and do crafts with their kids.

And I wish I had been doing those things.

But, to be completely honest, I am just trying to make it out of this mess of a world in one piece.

Disclaimer: Don’t tell me to look on the bright side after reading this. I have been. I am making the most of all this. But I also know that this hasn’t been easy on anyone and let’s stop lying and say we’re 100% okay.

Look at the last three months of our lives. It’s been a true clusterf*ck. Everything was cancelled. Literally everything.

I was supposed to go to a Backstreet Boys concert with my sister this fall and it has been rescheduled for 2021. I don’t know if Backstreet will be making it back. They are older than me and I can’t walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded.

But back to the real world. The crappy one we have been living in. I can’t even take my kids to a playground.

I can’t run an errand when it’s just me and the boys because I can’t take them into the store with me, but I also can’t leave them in the car because DCBS would get called.

And then, finally this Coronavirus was starting to get a little better and things were easing up and everyone goes out and people start getting sick again.

Sending our kids to school in the fall will be like sending them into a spaceship of plastic in tiny hazmat suits. Kind of like that Flight of the Navigator movie from my early nineties childhood.

THEN some douche dongle decides to murder an innocent black man in cold blood with people yelling at him to stop and the crowd filming the entire incident.

And that’s when the world went up into flames. I decided to educate myself about racism and realized that as a privileged 35-year old woman living in a mid-size, mostly white town in Kentucky, that I had been unknowingly judging people because of the color of their skin.

That was absolutely embarrassing and it’s hard to admit because it feels so dirty. But now I know and am learning more and have realized that black lives matter and some people that call themselves Christians are still racist.

Disclaimer: I will get about 7 hateful emails because of the comment above.

So not much has happened over the last three months. Just chillin’ with my fam on the back porch.

Can we all just admit it?

This has absolutely been one of the hardest times in my entire life. I have been trying to balance all this change with raising two young boys, working and trying to be a good wife.

My husband had his entire baseball team’s season cancelled and was absolutely crushed for the ten seniors that were on the team this year. At least five, maybe six now, have been signed to play baseball in college. Logan, I just want you to know I am proud of the coach you are.

On the other side, I have been working full time at the office and Logan has been taking care of the kids while working from home.

And the sum of all that craziness showed us that marriage isn’t easy.

I never talk about our marriage on here, but this pandemic and the chain of events following have made us realize how much work it is to make a marriage work and that we have to spend time together communicating every day. It can be hard because we are both tired and frustrated and want our lives to feel a small bit of normalcy again but it’s worth it.

So yeah, unicorns and rainbows over here.

Oh, and I need someone to potty train my two-year old but that would just be pouring gasoline on this dumpster fire right now. His poop is the size of my arm and it’s getting so gross but he is not showing interest. So I will continue letting him wear big boy underwear over his diaper.

So let’s take a vow that we will start being honest about how we are feeling. I have been having a hard time. Lots of anxiety. And I just realized it because I had been lying to myself that everything was great and that life hasn’t thrown me a curveball of poop that was on fire.

Until next time, which is hopefully sooner rather than later.

If you grew up in the 90’s, chances are you played with a Polly Pocket. The now vintage toy was every little girl’s dream, with tiny characters in a tiny world that looked just like your mom’s makeup compact.

With a new Polly Pocket generation alive and well, those vintage versions from the early 90’s are now a hot commodity. A quick Google reveals that the less than one-inch dolls and their cute compacts can sell anywhere from a few dollars to thousands!

An unopened Bluebird 1992 Partytime Stampers kit sets you back over $3,000 while a buying just a minifigure to replace that one lost in the 80’s can start at $25 for one doll. While most of the items fetching top dollar are unopened Polly Pockets, if you have a stash lying around you can still rake in some serious cash by selling your collection online.

When picking a class for your baby or toddler to participate in, it can be helpful to take her development into consideration. Many classes for babies and toddlers will work on skills from different areas of development, but it may not be obvious to you as a parent which skills are being addressed.

In order to help you better understand how classes for your 0 to 3-year-old may address these skills, here’s what you can look for when picking a class for your own baby or toddler.

Gross Motor Skills

During your baby’s infancy and toddlerhood, she is developing all kinds of new skills right before your eyes! Her gross motor skills may be the easiest to see as she goes from lying down to sitting, crawling, walking and eventually running.

A class that incorporates gross motor skill development will likely have a movement component, where your child is encouraged to move their body by dancing, crawling, or climbing. Any movement is good for gross motor development, but classes that help your child improve their gross motor skills will facilitate new movements that your child has not yet mastered.

Fine Motor Skills

Your baby’s fine motor skills progress from learning the basics of how to reach for and grasp toys to more advanced manipulation of toys.

Fine motor skills are skills that incorporate using our hands, and are essential for most activities. Classes for young children that target fine motor skill development will likely consist of playing instruments, using tools, or manipulating objects.

Cognitive Skills

Your child’s cognitive skills explode during this time period as she transitions from learning by passively observing the world around her to learning through interacting with objects and actively exploring her environment.

Your young child uses cognitive skills whenever she is engaged in an activity, but some activities require more cognitive skills than others. Classes that advance your child’s cognitive skills at this stage may involve activities such as counting, discussing colors, and naming objects.

Social Skills

You can watch her social skills grow as she moves from depending fully on you to being curious in other adults and children in her life.  In your baby’s first few years of life, her social skills development focuses primarily on her primary caregivers.

Classes that promote social skills at this stage will be for both your baby and you (or another caregiver), and will require your active participation in activities. For older toddlers classes that address social skills may also work on sharing and turn taking.

Play Skills

The development of all of these skills culminate in her play skills, which change and advance as she develops new ways of interacting with the people and things in her world.

Classes that promote play skills will allow your child free time to explore toys and/or activities. While structured time is important for other skill development, play skills require more open-ended activities to fully develop.

All of these skills are essential to healthy development and finding classes that address each of them will benefit your baby for years to come.

The next time you head out for errands, keep your eyes peeled at your fellow moms shopping with you—celeb mom sightings at Target are totally a thing! We’ve long believed that celebrity parents are just like the rest of us, and now we know we aren’t alone in our love of the bullseye retailer.

Keep scrolling to see which one of your fave celebs can’t get enough of Target runs, too.

Beyoncé

Queen Bey was spotted recently wandering the baby aisle at Target looking stunning as ever. While the rest of us might slum to the retailer in our best mom sweats, the mom of three may just have inspired us to step it up a notch.

Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen also has an exclusive collab with Target, so shopping at Target makes sense. But for the launch of her new kitchen line, she did more than just shop at Target—she actually worked at Target for a day, ringing up customers! Teigen also had some pretty funny thoughts about that whole “Beyoncé shopping at Target” news, too.

Joanna Gaines

With five kids in tow, we’re surprised Jojo doesn’t use curbside pickup or same-day delivery for her Target runs! It’s probably that whole amazing Hearth & Hand with Magnolia collab that keeps her coming in store.

Jenna Bush Hager

Jenna Bush Hager knows how to be resourceful and that includes covering up her locks something every Target aficionado has lying around: a plastic Target shopping bag! The TODAY Show co-host wouldn’t let a swim in the pool ruin her good hair day!

Serena Williams

Last summer, Serena let us all in on her shopping secret––shop Target at night! The tennis superstar prefers to shop late night to get in her Target fix and to try on all the swimsuits she wants without being bothered.

Britney Spears

Do you think Brit Brit is shopping for an anniversary edition of “Hit me Baby, One More Time?” The pop star and mom of two has to do her Target runs, too! Seriously—Britney really likes Target, according to court documents about her spending habits obtained by E! News in 2018.

Jessica Alba

Yup, this actress and mompreneur shops Target, too––after all, they were one of the first places you could stock up on The Honest Company products! She’s been spotted both solo and with her three kiddos in tow.

Jennifer Garner

As a mom of three, it’s no surprise that Jennifer Garner would find herself at Target constantly. Oh, and that whole new line of organic baby food (Once Upon a Farm) probably helps, too. We’ve seen plenty of smiles while she shops and can we please just be besties already?

Michelle Obama

In 2011, the then-First Lady was spotted shopping incognito at Target and it caused quite the uproar at the time. In 2015, Obama told Stephen Colbert “shopping at Target” was one of the things she was most looking forward to once she and her husband left the White House after his second term. (Could we blame her? We think not.)
