There’s one universal truth in parenthood—there’s never enough time to make dinner. We’re always running someone to soccer practice, fighting giant piles of laundry, and trying to work a full day in between. The solution: 5-ingredient recipes that you can whip up in a flash. These easy meals are very kid-friendly, and mostly rely on items you’re likely to already have in your pantry so you won’t have to make a separate trip to the store (who has time for that?). We’ve left out some of the more obvious choices because we know you’re already a pro at grilled cheese, taco Tuesdays, quick eggs, and the like. Consider your meal plan done!

Creamy Tomato Tortellini with Pesto

The base for this filling dish is cheese-filled tortellini, which is pretty much the most kid-friendly pasta around. Add some mini meatballs or sliced pre-cooked sausage if you want to up the protein in this dish.

5-Ingredient Lemon Chicken with Asparagus

Pinch of Yum 5-ingredient lemon chicken and asparagus
Pinch of Yum

Whether you go with chicken thighs or chicken breasts, this recipe from Pinch of Yum is super flavorful and easy to make. The citrus from the lemon is mellowed out with honey to satisfy those picky palates.

Ground Turkey Lettuce Wraps

We love how flavorful these lettuce wraps are. Butter lettuce works best and you can serve it over rice for those picky ones in your family.

Easy Crockpot Ranch Chicken

If your kid isn’t a Ranch fan yet, now is the time to indoctrinate them. This 4-ingredient recipe from The Cookie Rookie makes kid-friendly chicken in a veg-free sauce, so you’re more likely to avoid the mealtime tantrums.

5-Ingredient Coconut Curry

5 ingredient coconut curry
Pinch of Yum

There’s something super comforting about this coconut curry from Pinch of Yum. It uses chickpeas instead of meat so that means it will come together super fast.

Paleo Gnocchi Bolognese

Your family won’t even know that you’re using Trader Joe’s cauliflower gnocchi as the base of this delicious dish.

5-Ingredient Zucchini Fritters

This recipe is a great way to use up your summer bounty of zucchini. We suggest cooking them on your electric griddle if you have one.

Pa Amb Tomàquet (aka Catalan Tomato Bread)

Any vehicle for including more ripe tomatoes in our lives is a must-try. Also, this bread looks like a fun way to get the kids in on the cooking action.

Garlic Butter Chicken and Brussels Sprouts

Not only does this recipe only have 5 ingredients, but it’s a one-pot wonder as well. Chicken thighs, Brussels sprouts, and garlic are the main players in this flavorful dish.

5-Ingredient Chili

5 ingredient chili Gimme Some Oven
Gimme Some Oven

We love a chili recipe that comes together in a flash. You can even sub in meatless crumbles if you’d like to make this recipe from Gimme Some Oven vegetarian.

5-Ingredient Trader Joe’s Branzino

This recipe uses three of our favorite TJs items: branzino, lemony arugula salad kit, and frozen country potatoes.

One-Pot Pasta

Kristine's Kitchen Blog one pot pasta
Kristine’s Kitchen Blog

One-pot meals are a weekday dinner staple, and this one from Kristine’s Kitchen Blog serves up sausage with pasta. Bonus: You don’t even need to drain the pasta as it cooks right in the sauce.

Lemon Butter Scallops

5 ingredient lemon butter scallops Damn Delicious
Damn Delicious

Head over to Damn Delicious to snag this recipe that cooks up quickly and is great paired with asparagus or broccoli.

Quick Duck Stir Fry

A stir fry is a great way to use up any veg that might be sitting neglected in the bottom of your fridge. This one uses duck, but you could easily sub in chicken if you prefer.

Instant Pot Short Rib Ragu

Pinch of Yum 5 ingredient short rib ragu
Pinch of Yum

Our advice for this full-of-flavor recipe from Pinch of Yum is to double it. It’s that good.

Spaghetti Carbonara

Any meal that starts with cooking up some bacon is destined for greatness, and this spaghetti carbonara from Damn Delicious is no exception.

Instant Pot French Dip Sandwiches

You’ll get lots of flavor development in a short amount of time with this recipe from Amy + Jacky. We like to serve it on toasted ciabatta rolls topped with Swiss cheese.

This recipe has been all over TikTok, and we totally understand the hype. You just throw some cherry tomatoes and feta in the oven to bake and boil up some pasta to mix in at the end. What could be easier?

Cacio e Pepe

We love that this pasta recipe is full of flavor but contains no visible vegetables that may turn your crew off dinner. Gimme Some Oven explains the easy steps to making this Italian favorite.

No-Fuss Prime Rib

Save this recipe for the holidays when time is short. You’ll impress your guests with homemade prime rib, we know it.

Trader Joe’s Lobster Bisque Pasta

Yes, this recipe uses Trader Joe’s lobster bisque to make the creamy sauce, and we are here for it.

Dad isn’t expecting these…

Why is it that dads always seem to have everything they could ever want? Maybe they genuinely don’t want anything that they don’t already own. Or it could be just that he never really mentions wanting something specific. We think there’s a good chance he’s dropped a hint or two, but we’re pretty sure those hints are along the lines of something practical. And listen, we love our dads and our partners, but we just don’t think socks or a cordless drill backup battery really show what they mean to us. We also don’t want to know that much about drill backup batteries. That means every year, Father’s Day gift shopping can be a serious guessing game.

You’ve probably already done the tie thing. The tools thing. The iTunes gift card thing. Those are all fine, but we think we’ve come up with a few ideas you might not have thought of yet and that dad isn’t expecting. Whether he’s a sports guy, a foodie, or a fashion-forward father, we’ve done our research (just like dad taught us). There are some really cool gifts out there—or rather, right here—that are sure to excite him. So start visualizing your dad, stepdad, husband, partner, and any other dad on your list and check out these Father’s Day gifts.

My kids and I took a trip to San Antonio recently. We live in Dallas, but we aren’t native Texans, so all we’ve managed to do up to this point is drive through it a few times. Since we’d heard so much about the city, we were excited to hit the ground running. After spending three whirlwind days scoping out hot spots and discovering hidden gems, there’s one thing we all agreed on: the food in San Antonio is fantastic. It wasn’t our intention to eat our way through the city, but we sure felt like we did. My kids were enthusiastic about trying new things (maybe there’s something in the water?), and I was thrilled to be able to introduce them to cuisine we don’t often try at home.

Did we have to hoist ourselves out of our chairs after each meal? Yup. Did we have a blast exploring local sites and attractions before and after each restaurant? You bet. If you want a place with culture, history, and some of the best food in Texas, head for San Antonio as soon as possible. To help you plan your trip, I’ve highlighted the spots we tried and what to eat once you sit down. And, when you’ve paid the bill and need to explore, the best things to do with kids in San Antonio while you work up an appetite (again.)

Downtown San Antonio

Omni La Mansión del Rio hotel
The pool area at Omni La Mansión del Rio

We stayed downtown at the Omni La Mansión del Rio. The hotel backs up to the Riverwalk; you will have direct access to the walkways from the back of the hotel. It’s a designated historic landmark, and you’ll find Spanish and Colonial influences everywhere. The charming pool area is in the very center of the property, and you’ll catch yourself admiring the dark wood, archways, and tile found everywhere. Depending on the length of your stay, you can opt for valet parking; it’s a nice perk when you come in late from your adventures.

Pan Dulce at La Panaderia in San Antonio
Pan dulce and other pastries from La Panaderia

Since we were downtown, we spent time eating here. If you plan on having breakfast, try La Panaderia. It’s a couple of blocks from The Riverwalk, and be prepared; when we arrived, there was a line out the door. It’s a fast-casual concept, and once we got an eyeful of the Mexican pan dulce (think conchas, orejas, peineta, and just about every other pastry you can imagine), we were eager to get our order in. We tried different baked goods, the egg croissant sandwich and the avocado toast accompanied by pinto beans.

An excellent place for an upscale lunch or dinner is Boudro’s. Located on the Riverwalk, it’s a cozy spot with tables inside and out. Led by executive chef Danny Ibarra, the menu is inspired by the history and traditions of South Texas. They have a wonderful Ceasar salad with a subtle Chipotle dressing, tableside guacamole, blue crab tostadas, black and white soup, and impressive entrees like blackened Gulf fish fillet, shrimp, and grits, and various cuts of steak.

Seeing the Alamo is something you must do with kids in San Antonio
Exterior view of The Alamo

After checking out the food options, there are plenty of ways to spend your day. The Alamo is a short walk from the Riverwalk, and you won’t be sorry you booked that audio tour. You can take a cruise to learn the history of the Riverwalk or wander through the historic Market SquareIf you want something fun, check out El Camino Food Truck Park, where you’ll find rotating food trucks, a colorful assortment of picnic tables, and great drinks. Go to SEALife Aquarium at the Rivercenter for a break from the sun. That’s where you’ll find San Antonio’s only underwater tunnel, the Shipwreck exhibit filled with colorful fish, coral, and eels, and of course, don’t leave without getting up close and personal at the Rockpools.

The Pearl District in San Antonio

For more food fun, head for The Pearl District. A short car or rideshare away from the heart of San Antonio, you can find everything from pizza to ramen, seafood, Caribbean street food, French comfort food, and even Peruvian-Asian fusion.

Southerleigh is a restaurant in the Pearl District
Raw oysters at Southerleigh

One that should be at the top of your list is Southerleigh. Located on the bottom floor of the historic Pearl Brewery, Chef Jeff Balfour perfectly blends his coastal upbringing with comfort food, creating a delightful menu. Start with a selection of raw oysters, order the watermelon salad for a fresh, tangy starter, and then order both the pressure-fried chicken (brined for 24 hours) and the cracker-crusted Gulf redfish because it’ll be impossible to decide between the two. Did we mention the cornbread side? Go ahead and get one of those too. Our only regret was that we didn’t have a chance to try everything on the menu. They have a lengthy wine menu but also offer beer brewed on-site.

For some of that French comfort food we mentioned, try Brasserie Mon Chou Chou. Their new breakfast options include le petit déjeuner français (French breakfast consisting of bread, jams, pastries, etc.), a delicious Croque Madam (classic French ham and cheese sandwich), fresh berries and cream, and perfectly cooked bacon. The all-day menu has things like lobster bisque, a charcuterie board, steak frites, and croquant de brie.

Outside San Antonio City Center

Something to know about San Antonio is that you don’t have to stick close to the city center to enjoy good food.

Eating at the Jerk Shack with kids in San Antonio
Trying all the things at The Jerk Shack

If going to Fiesta Texas, Sea World, or Aquatica, save yourself from amusement park food and stop at The Jerk Shack before or after your day. This Caribbean restaurant has won countless awards since it opened its doors. Owned and operated by Chef Nicola (who also owns Mi Roti in the Bottling Dept. Food Hall in the Pearl District), it was hard to choose between the curry plate and the jerk chicken, but take our advice and order the jerk chicken. Chef Nicola developed her recipe after visiting family in the Caribbean, and after multiple tries, she got the spices just right. Load up on sides like masala fries, greens, plantains, homemade mac and cheese, and honey butter rolls. Trust us (or my kids), The Jerk Shack is one of the best places to eat in San Antonio.

Another great spot is Gold Feathers Birds + Beer, a locally-owned spot with a casual vibe, and the first thing you need to know is that the chicken and waffles are a must-try. I also liked the way I was able to customize my chicken wings to my palate. You can choose to have them dry or with a rub, and then pick your sauce from an impressive list: honey bbq, parmesan garlic, midnight cowboy, and the samurai jack are only a few. They have handheld sandwiches like the classic chicken fried sandwich, the Bun Mi, the Good Morning American, and the Spicy Tatanka. There’s a great list of microbrews, many of which are local and Texas-brewed beers.

Where to Walk It Off

Eat as much good food as we did, and you’ll need a place to recover between meals. San Antonio has great attractions for families with kids of all ages, and our favorite spots were all within a mile of each other.

Visiting the Doseum is a fun thing to do with kids in San Antonio.
Creating our cities in Megalopolis at The Doseum

For curious kids, be sure to spend some time at The Doseum. A hands-on science museum just for kids, enjoy exhibits like Megalopolis, where you can build your own “city,” play with light and sound in the sensation studio, and take little ones ages five and under Little Town or out to the wooden playground. Our favorite thing about The Doseum was Spy Academy. We got to pick our mission and had fun solving puzzles, collecting clues, and learning espionage skills.

The Witte Museum made it to the top of our list of favorite things to do with kids in San Antonio. The McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery features every natural region of Texas, complete with a Texas thunderstorm. We loved learning about the animals and plants in the Panhandle Plains, the East Texas Piney Woods, the Rio Grande Valley, and more. There are plenty of fossils in the Naylor Family Dinosaur Gallery for budding paleontologists, and the Texas Heritage Center has artifacts that span over 100 years of Lone Star State history. If you head outside, there are gardens, a treehouse, a waterworks station, and a view of the San Antonio River.

exploring the San Antonio Botanical Garden with kids
Making rock cairns in the Family Adventure Garden

The San Antonio Botanical Garden is a special place. Not only is it home to Hardin, a restaurant that has small plate offerings like grilled cheese sandwiches, white cheddar stuffed dates, and deviled eggs, but the grounds themselves are worth a whole afternoon of exploration. Head straight for the Family Adventure Garden, where you’ll find stick huts, shaded benches, a shallow creek that winds through a limestone valley—this was my kids’ favorite place to cool off—and opportunities to make rock cairns. You can wander through the Kumamoto Garden to admire the koi fish and other traditional Japanese garden features. Beyond the garden is a sprawling lawn with Adirondack chairs placed under Hill Country live oak trees; a perfect place to relax while the kids play. We also loved the Texas Native Trail featuring three different ecological regions of the state: Hill Country, East Texas Pineywoods, and South Texas.

As we were pulling onto the highway after our whirlwind trip, my kids asked when we could come back. My answer? As soon as possible.

RELATED STORIES: The Ultimate Packing List for Any Family Vacation

This trip was paid for by Visit San Antonio but all opinions here belong to the writer.

When you enter the gates of the Grand Velas Riviera Maya, it’s immediately apparent that it’s a special place. Imagine a long drive surrounded by the Yucatan jungle and guests running along the trail, riding bikes or heading for the clear water of the Caribbean Sea. Whether you want a family trip you’ll never forget (wait until you hear about the room perks!), or if you’re considering an epic adults-only getaway (the spa alone is worth booking a room), we’ve got six reasons why this luxe resort should be on the top of your list when considering your next vacation.

1. The Location

Gabby Cullen

Located about 25 minutes away from the Cancun airport and five minutes away from downtown Playa del Carmen, with only 30% of the 206 acres developed, the Grand Velas gives off a remote vibe that feels far away from everyday life. The heart of the resort is nestled against the clear waters of the Caribbean, so you'll get the beachside getaway of your dreams.

2. The Beach

Courtesy Grand Velas Riviera Maya

The white sand beach is a short walk away from two of the three properties at the Grand Velas. It is a breathtaking sight, and the waves are fairly calm, which makes this beach ideal for families with small children. The cabanas are plentiful, the beachside service is prompt; you won’t have to wait for that fruity drink or fresh ceviche (be sure to order the tacos too!) that’s served beachside. If you stay in the Grand Class, you'll have an oceanfront view; if you stay in the Ambassador, you'll enjoy views of both the infinity pool and the ocean.

3. The Attention to Detail

The Grand Velas has all the things you love about a resort and things you didn’t know you desired on vacation. From the turndown service and the Molton Brown products provided for your exclusive use to the attentive 24-hour concierge and luxury surroundings, this family-owned boutique hotel company doesn’t miss a beat. For those who love pampering, a new perk is the DIY face scrub provided by Se Spa and delivered to your hotel room. The minibar comes stocked with all kinds of goodies, and if you have kids in tow, you can request age-appropriate snacks, like chocolate milk, be stocked instead of adult items. The service is some of the best we've experienced. Whether you are sitting poolside, at one of the eight dining locations or in the spa area, you'll have someone taking your order within minutes.

4. The Hotel Suites

There are 539 suites on the property, and 75 of them are connecting suites, which is ideal for families Almost everything parents with small kids need is available at the Grand Velas. Upon request, kids will be welcomed with a tent, minibar snacks and tiny bathrobes. Essentials like a high chair, strollers, a baby bathtub, crib and a diaper genie are also available, which means you don't have to bring that gear from home. As an added amenity, many of the suites have private plunge pools.

Each experience is different. If you decide to stay in Zen, the surrounding jungle feels secluded, but the beach is a short shuttle drive away. The Ambassador is very kid-friendly; it has the pool closest to Azul, the buffet restaurant perfect for when kids need a break from the pool and the beach, and the Grand Class has the wow-worthy oceanfront views perfect for watching the sunrise or sunset (think adults-only getaway!).

5. The Food

Courtesy Grand Velas Riviera Maya

You may come to the Grand Velas for the food alone. There are eight restaurants in total, and five of them offer an upscale culinary journey through Mexico and Europe and Asia.

Azul is a buffet-style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with snacks in-between time. They’ve got a wide variety of menu options for every palate, including hamburgers and sushi. The open-air terrace has beachfront views, and the indoor space has air conditioning for when you want to take a break from the sun. There are other restaurants good for breakfast and lunch, like Chaká (also open for dinner) and Bistro.

Frida is a locally-inspired AAA Four-Diamond restaurant. One thing you must order is the tuna tartar (or three). The black bean soup is the right blend of spices, and kids will enjoy the grilled chicken with rice. If you feel like having a specialty drink, their tequila mixed drinks are your best bet. The decor is vibrant and eclectic in a nod to the iconic artist, there is often live music playing, and the ocean views don’t disappoint.

Piaf is a French-inspired dining experience for guests ages 16 & up. The wine list is expansive, and you might never have escargot as exceptional as the ones served here. The lobster bisque is creamy and full of flavor, and the lamb is a popular entree for good reason.

Cocina de Autor is a AAA Five-Diamond Award honoree—the first restaurant in an all-inclusive resort to be given the title. Celebrity chefs Bruno Oteiza and Mikel Alonso designed this avant-garde experience, which offers multi-course small plates prepared in ways that visually wow guests. This is an adults-only restaurant, so make childcare plans ahead of time.

Lucca is where you'll find Mediterranean-inspired cuisine like pizza, pasta and carpaccio, and Sen Lina is where you'll find pad Thai, teriyaki chicken, curry dishes and more.

6. The Activities & Amenities

Courtesy Grand Velas Riviera Maya

Whatever you want your vacation to look like, you can make it happen at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya.

Do you want to have alone time while the kids enjoy non-stop activities and fun?

Head for the kids and teen club. The kids club is open from 9 am-11 pm, and one glance at the schedule showed us that there’s something for every guest. There is cooking time, arts and crafts, movies, pool fun, movie night, dance parties and even yoga. They don’t serve food in the club itself, but staff members will take guests to Azul for meals. The Teen Club is so cool, you might have a hard time convincing your older kids to leave. Open from 11 am-11 pm, younger kids can come in to hang with their siblings until 7 pm, and after that, it’s teens only! There are Playstation pods, air hockey, foosball, pool tables and a lounge/club that sets the scene for chill time. Don’t forget to check out the piano bar or sing your heart out at the karaoke bar after your dinner and before picking up the kids.

Do you want to spend time at the adults-only spa?

Be sure to schedule a day at the award-winning Se Spa. This peaceful sanctuary has been awarded five stars by Forbes travel. Try one of their unique massages or treatments (the Sounds of the Soul is their newest offering), experience the eight-step hydrotherapy program and take a Water Journey in the sensory pool.

Do you want to keep up with your workouts?

There are two world-class gyms, and you can schedule a workout session with a personal trainer. There are also paved roads for running and regularly scheduled bike tours.  Set in a serene outdoor setting, the Yoga class is restorative. There are also dance classes, water polo, beach soccer, beach volleyball and Zumba lessons every day, so be sure to check the activities schedule.

Editor’s Note: The availability of indoor dining has fluctuated significantly recently in counties in and around the city of Chicago. Please reach out to the restaurant before planning an in-person visit to inquire on procedures or support restaurants by ordering take-out or delivery.

Slurp it. Stir it. Make waves. Blow on it. Nibble the good stuff and use a straw for the rest. No wonder kids love soup; it’s so fun to eat. And it keeps us warm and cozy, which right now is a very good thing. (Can you even believe we’ve already seen snow?) In Chicago, soup comes in all kinds of varieties. From a Jewish deli with great Matzah balls to an Argyle Street pho haven, here is where to get your fix and support Chicago restaurants at the same time.

Urbanbelly
Chef Bill Kim’s original ramen restaurant is full of soups worth guzzling. The namesake ramen is a favorite with braised pork belly, mushrooms and egg. For a pint-sized pot, try the kids chicken noodle soup with thick udon noodles and crispy chicken in a mild broth. Housed in an artsy loft building, the space itself is a feast for the senses—communal tables, funky lighting and all.

R.J. Grunts
R.J. Grunts is the very first Lettuce Entertain You creation and holds the honor of having the very first salad bar in America. They only have two soups on the menu: Broccoli Cheddar and Chicken Noodle, but they are both the ultimate comfort foods. And, as a bonus, R.J. Grunts is just steps away from wintery fun at Lincoln Park Zoo.

2056 N. Lincoln Park West; Lincoln Park; Online: rjgruntschicago.com

Soupbox
Soupbox is small, with just a few tables, and the focus is on the cauldrons of soup from which you serve yourself. Twelve kinds of soup are served daily and you can try samples of them all. Ladle soup out into a bread bowl for an even tastier treat. The signature lobster bisque is perfect for adventurous eaters, and we guarantee they’ll be too busy scarfing down the broccoli and white cheddar soup that they’ll forget it has veggies. Bonus: You can get it delivered by DoorDash, UberEats, Postmates, Caviar or GrubHub for those souper cold days and they have vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

2943 N. Broadway St., Lakeview; Online: soupbox.com

Artopolis
This café has a storybook of Greek specialties in a bright and open space. Kids love checking out the myriad of colorful pastries that line the bakery when you first walk in. The traditional soup—chicken and rice—is a must-order. The luscious lemon-y broth is studded with chunks of chicken and a smattering of white rice. Order it with the homemade bread and you have yourself the perfect winter lunch.

Max and Benny’s
Ask any bubbie and she’ll tell you that matzah ball soup is the cure for just about anything. This homey Jewish deli follows that train of thought and dishes out matzah balls so big your kids may mistake them for giant snowballs. Try the Mish Mosh, a ginormous bowl of chicken soup with a heaping of noodles, rice, kreplach, matzah balls, kasha and carrots. The kids’ menus double as coloring books for added mealtime fun.

461 Waukegan Rd., Northbrook; Online: maxandbennys.com

Hai Yen
Venture to Argyle Street in Uptown for pho, a traditional Vietnamese soup made from beef stock and spices. It’s served in a number of restaurants up and down the strip, but our favorite is this modern, minimal spot. For the first-timer, try the Pho Tai, a beef noodle soup full of steak and noodles, and a side plate of Thai basil, bean sprouts, jalapeno and lime.

1055 W. Argyle St., Uptown; Online: haiyenrestaurant.com

Larsa’s Fine Mediterranean Food
If you find yourself looking for a place to eat after ping-ponging from store to store in Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center, it’s worth the short trek east to try this colorful, family-owned spot. Its lentil soup is made fresh daily and is a traditional (and healthy) favorite. Ask for fresh-from-the-oven pita bread and sop it up.

3724 Dempster St., Skokie; Online: larsasmediterranean.com

And a date night option . . .

Frontera Grill
If you haven’t tried Frontera Grill’s chicken tortilla soup, you are missing out. Seriously. It will ruin you on all other chicken tortilla soups because very few compare. It’s light and brothy with just the right amount of kick. From the presentation—where it’s brought out in the copper pot and poured over tortilla chips and cheese right in front of you—down to the last slurp, you’ll be begging for more. Be sure if you hit up this favorite date night spot, you start with the soup. Tip: If you ever find yourself delayed at O’Hare, grab a bowl at Tortas Frontera in Terminals 1, 3 and 5.

Mug Shots: The 10 Best Places to Sip Hot Chocolate

Whether you make your home in the City by the Bay or you are just looking for things to do for the day in San Francisco, PIER 39 is an iconic San Francisco spot that definitely deserves a visit. Located on The Embarcadero in Fisherman’s Wharf, PIER 39 offers dozens of places to eat, an aquarium, a double decker carousel and the rowdiest sea lions you have ever seen. Run down our list of must-visit spots on your next visit to PIER 39.

What to Do

There’s no shortage of fun to fill a full day (or longer) at PIER 39. It’s location offers stunning views of both the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge as well as Alcatraz. Book a ride on the Blue and Gold Fleet for an on-the-water experience. View the skyline on a bay cruise or opt for the Escape from the Rock cruise where you’ll circle Alcatraz and learn about the island’s history. Thrill seekers can opt for a ride on the RocketBoat for 30 minutes of high-speed adventure on the Bay. All of these options leave from PIER 39 and are available throughout the day.

When you arrive at PIER 39, follow your ears to the West Marina to visit the sea lions that took up residence there shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. These raucous creatures can be seen sunning themselves and jockeying for prime spots on the dock. Each winter the population increases to around 900 sea lions and a many are there year round.

Learn more about the sea lions by visiting the Sea Lion Center on the second floor above the West Marina. Here you can check out the interactive displays and watch educational videos. Through the end of the summer, the Sea Lion Center will be showing the documentary film STRAWS every weekend at 1:30 p.m., followed by a discussion with an Aquarium of the Bay Educator. Support PIER 39’s Skip the Straw initiative by opting to go straw-less to keep the waterways free from plastic debris.

If you walk all the way to the end of PIER 39 you will find the double decker San Francisco carousel. This masterpiece was hand painted in Italy and features famous San Francisco landmarks like Coit Tower, Lombard Street and the Golden Gate Bridge. In addition to the traditional carousel horses, kids can even ride a PIER 39 sea lion!

This end of the pier is also home to the 7D Experience where you can enjoy the thrill of a roller coaster with 3D interaction on DarkRide. Then put your agility to the test in the Laser Maze Challenge where you navigate through a web of laser beams to beat the clock.

Kids (and grown-ups, too!) will be mesmerized by a visit to Magowan’s Infinite Mirror Maze. Try to find your way through the maze that’s filled with dead ends, endless circles and optical illusions. The maze costs $5 and kids 5 and under are free!

Don’t miss a few runs up and down the musical staircase, located around the corner from the Mirror Maze, near Mango’s Mexican restaurant. This interactive art exhibit was designed by Artist Remo Saraceni, creator of the floor piano in the Tom Hank’s movie Big.

The Aquarium of the Bay is a definite must-visit spot at PIER 39. This aquarium features the aquatic creatures of the San Francisco Bay including anchovies, jellyfish, sting rays and sevengill sharts. Kids will love the two touch pools where they can meet bat rays, skates, leopard sharks and tidepool animals such as sea stars and sea cucumbers. The newly-added river otters exhibit teaches kids about the importance of protecting our waterways for creatures big and small.

Perhaps the most mesmerizing exhibit is the Under the Bay tunnels where you can walk through 300 feet of acrylic tunnels filled with schooling anchovies, skates, bay rays and sharks. Take a look at the daily schedule before you visit so that you know when there will be special animal encounters and feedings.

Good to know: get your hand stamped at the aquarium and you can take a lunch break and return later in the day for more aquatic adventures!

Where to Eat

PIER 39’s location right on the water makes it the ideal spot to grab a bowl of clam chowder in a sour dough bread bowl. There are dozens of eateries along the pier that offer this local favorite. Head to Boudin at the Wharf to check out this local sour dough bakery that offers self-guided tours throughout the day.

Looking for a sit-down spot with a view? The end of the pier by the carousel is home to The Chart House where you can grab some lobster bisque or the California burger on a pretzel roll.

Satisfy your sweet tooth cravings with a stop at the Dreyer’s ice cream shop or head upstairs to DOUGHP where you can get the most off-the-hook raw cookie dough served in a cone!

If you are at PIER 39 during the morning hours, a stop at Trish’s Mini Donuts is a must-do. Kids will love seeing the donut-making machine in action. Grab a bucket of donuts to take with you on your PIER 39 adventures.

Where to Shop

Swing by Solve It! on the second floor by the musical stairs to check out all of the wooden puzzles, brain teasers and games that will keep the kids busy for hours (with no WiFi needed!). The Shell Cellar is a fun spot to find abalone shells of all sizes and colorful clam shells made into works of art.

Got a lefty in your crew? Don’t miss a stop at the shop that’s all for south paws—Lefty’s San Francisco. If you want some vintage flair to bring back home with you, swing by The Stone Flower where you can find handmade headbands, retro viewfinders and even a bucket of Army men at the bargain price of three for a dollar.

Make It a Staycation

There’s so much to do at PIER 39 that you might want to include an overnight in your trip planning. Hotel Zephyr is a great spot just two blocks from PIER 39. You can take advantage of its convenient location right in the Fisherman’s Wharf action and then take a break from the crowds in the hotel’s massive courtyard that includes a giant Connect Four game, ping pong in a tube, fire pits and tons of comfy seating options. In addition to the outdoor games, kids will love the pool table, shuffleboard and ping pong options in the inside game room.

Relax in the courtyard and order a pizza and a beer from The Camper, the hotel’s customized vintage Shasta camper turned food truck. Breakfast options include croissants, yogurt parfaits, breakfast burritos and piping-hot coffee. On Wednesday nights, guests can listen to a live DJ while they enjoy the sunset and a glass of wine.

The Details

Check out the PIER 39 events page for info on their outdoor movie night, July 4th fireworks celebration and more. Savings and discounts can be found on their offers page (where they often have specials just for locals). Visit the California Welcome Center at the pier to grab your fun pack that includes discounts and coupons to many restaurants and attractions on PIER 39.
