To your kids, a sofa is just indoor playground equipment. You can make forts, build obstacle courses, create slides and more. But not every parent wants the communal couch used for horseplay. And even if they’re not actively building something out of your living room furniture, kiddos are still tough on couches. What is that “run, jump, land on their knees on the cushion” thing all kids do? And why? The point is, there’s only so much our sofas can take and still remain standing. And that’s exactly why we’re singing the kids play couch praises.

Kids play couches let little ones use their imagination with built-for-them sofas. Not only do they provide a designated area for your minis to get their wiggles out, but they also add a fun and playful element to any room. And they’re not just a piece of furniture. They can configure to almost anything they can dream up thanks to moveable cushions and columns. From the original Nugget to a new Insta-favorite The Figgy to the unlimited play combinations of The Hideout, here are the best play couches for kids. Tumble away!

The Nugget

Nugget

The first. The original. The gold standard. The Nugget arrives in 4 simple pieces: 2 wedge pillows, a sturdy base pillow and a soft cushion. It's a straightforward approach that lets you bend, fold and rearrange this play couch into (at last count) 25 or more configurations. Likely the most adaptive piece of furniture you'll own, the Nugget morphs from fort to lounger with ease, and its supportive base means it easily converts into a bed or naptime cozy corner. It comes in 22 colors, so you can blend this chic piece in with your decor.

The Nugget Original ($249.00)—Shop Here!

The Hideout

Nurture&

The Hideout from Nurture& isn't just a couch. It's a castle, a couch, a bridge, and more. One of the first "luxury play couches" made from vegan leather and CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified foam. Available in grey, ivory, or olive (so it'll match any room in your house), it comes with 4 base cushions, 2 supportive triangles, and the optional upgrade option of two cushioned columns.

The Hideout ($249.00)—Shop Here!

The Figgy

The Figgy

Marketed as a "home adventure kit," The Figgy currently comes in five colors and features four base cushions and two rectangular cushions. You can build on this play set/sofa set by ordering extra rectangular cushions separately or adding wedges to your set. The Figgy has a super soft touch with a waterproof lining for extra protection (but if it does get dirty, just pop it in the wash) and is made from low-VOC foam.

The Figgy ($379.00)—Shop Here!

Foamnasium Gymnasium Playset

Foamnasium

Easy to build (thanks to the attached handles) and easy to clean (thanks to the durable cushion covers), this gymnasium setup is ideal for little climbers and tumblers. If bright hues aren't what you're looking for, the Foamnasium comes in three other color combinations.

Foamnasium Gymnasium Playset ($199.00)—Shop Here!

Barumba Play Couch

Barumba Play

The Barumba play couch comes with 11 pieces, but it's the same size as a regular play couch so that one is all you need to make endless imaginative builds. The pieces are intentionally kid-sized so little ones can do the building. Waterproof liners are included and it comes in several neutral hues to match any space.

The Barumba Play Couch ($689.00)—Shop Here!

Member's Mark Kids Explorer Sofa

Sam's Club

Kids play couches can come at a hefty price, which is why we love the Explorer as a more affordable option. With two triangle pillows to lean on (or build with), a base level and a "comfort" level, this set comes in 9 hues and features a secret pocket. If you're looking to fill a playroom or build a bigger lounge area, you can't beat this price tag.

Member's Mark Kids Explorer Sofa ($179.98)—Shop Here!

Leo Mat

Leo Mat

This foldable sofa set distinguishes itself from the competition by billing itself as a mat. Its unique tri fold design means it folds up more compactly than its competitors (ideal for families with limited space!). Each set is sold in two pieces (the tri fold mat and a foam wedge pillow) in five solid colors and nine patterns. The bold patterns in this line help hide dirt and stains between washes.

Leo Mat ($399.00)—Shop Here!

The Joey

Roo & You

Modeled after the oversized loungers used in private home theaters, The Joey Theater Set is great for school-aged gamers but still offers fun shapes and sizes for younger kids in the house to build with. You can get a similar effect by adding a Rocker Set to a regular Joey. The Joey comes with a half-moon armrest, perfect for the family that needs a little buffer between siblings.

These Are the Most Popular Trader Joe’s Products, According to Customers

With many schools going back to virtual learning this month (BIG SIGH), it’s a good time to have a check-in about the do’s and don’ts of “Zoom etiquette.” Make sure your student’s workspace is ready with this TikTok-famous Bluetooth keyboard, a fun desk organizer and all the glitter pens that are forbidden at traditional school. Grab some blue light-blocking glasses and print out this handy list that will make them the teacher’s favorite in no time.

Sponge

1. Be prepared. Just like any class at school, it's important to have all of your materials ready to go. For virtual school, that means you'll need to know the link, what time you need to be there and what books or printouts you'll need. Get your pencils sharpened in advance so you can be totally prepared to listen when the teacher comes on.

2. Be on time. Let's not waste the teacher's time. Be on time for your class meetings (or even a few minutes early). It's a good idea to test out the class link in advance of your call time, so you know that it works and your system is up and running. Print out your class schedules and post them on your wall as a reminder. Set an alarm (or ask a parent to do that) if you have a hard time remembering when to log on.

Andrea Piacquadio via Pexels

3. Learn how to use the virtual classroom program. Whether you are using Zoom, Google Classroom, WebEx or another program, it's important to know how it works. Learn how to enter the virtual classroom, mute and unmute yourself, turn off your camera and shut down the program. Is there a chat that you need to use? A way to indicate you are raising your hand? Find this out before the class starts.

4. Use headphones with a mic. It's easier for the class to hear from you when you need to talk if you are wearing headphones with an external microphone. Also, headphones will help you block out the distractions around you.

rawpixel

5. Stay in one spot during your call. Resist the urge to head to the kitchen for a snack or take your class meeting outside. It's distracting to your classmates to see you moving around during the class. Find a quiet spot where you will be comfortable for the whole class and make it your classroom spot. Remember, you are in class so lounging on your bed is not a good option. Sit at a desk or your kitchen table so you can have more focus.

6. Dress the part. While school uniforms aren't required for virtual schooling, you do want to make sure you look presentable for class. Change out of your pajamas (unless it is official pajama day), brush your hair and teeth and look presentable. Make sure any shirt you are wearing doesn't have any offensive graphics or text on it. Think about what you'd wear to school and dress accordingly.

Gladskikh Tatiana

7. Eliminate distractions. Keep in mind that class time is class time even when you are at home. Don't snack or chew gum during class. Turn off the music or the TV in the background. If you need to use the restroom, try to do that before class starts. Don't text or play on your cell phone during the class meeting.

8. Skip the virtual backgrounds. While some programs have fun options to add a virtual background, that can be super distracting to the other students. Unless your teacher has requested it, skip it. Also, it's good to clean up your room or sit in front of a blank wall to keep the mess to a minimum.

9. Wait for your turn. It's tough enough for teachers to manage a class when you are there in the same room. Virtual classes add a whole other challenge. Follow the teacher's instructions for volunteering and don't blurt out an answer unless you are called on. It can be a good idea to raise your hand instead of interrupting so that the teacher can finish the instructions before you jump in.

10. Remember, this is school. While it might be exciting to see your friends (finally!), this is not the time or place to chat about Minecraft or what you had for breakfast. If your virtual classroom has a chat feature, stay out of it unless the teacher requests students use it. Chat is public to everyone in the class (including the teacher), and it can be distracting.

11. Respect your teachers! This is the most important rule of all! Respect your teachers and all the work they have done to teach you in the virtual classroom. This might be a challenge for them too; we are all learning together. Make sure they know how much you appreciate them. The best way to do this is with good behavior in the virtual classroom (and gift cards don't hurt either!).

The Kids Who Do Well in School All Have This in Common

The Best Blue Light Blocking Glasses for Kids (& Their Grownups)

When it comes to art, kids want it to be bold, colorful and larger-than-life. From the moment you step through the doors of the bright blue building that houses Seattle’s newest art exhibit, Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, that’s what you’ll find. The oversized sunflowers that greet you at the door set the scene for this immersive art experience that was made for 21st century families. Wondering if you should visit? Here’s what you need to know.

Learn about Van Gogh

immersive van gogh seattle

By the time you exit the experience, you’ll have seen nearly 300 digital projections of Van Gogh’s sketches, drawings and paintings, but it all starts with learning about Van Gogh’s life, influences and recognizable technique. We recommend downloading the app to get the most out of the first few exhibit rooms. Wall placards aside, the QR codes take visitors to historical tidbits, personal notes and other intriguing facts and puts them in the palm of your hand. Plus, handing your device off to your little art lover (a.k.a. the official code scanner) gives kids a way to interact during this (mostly) static part of the experience.

van gogh immersive seattle

Kids will love the 3-D effects they’ll find along the way, too, like Van Gogh’s head and The Vases. When they make it to The Bedroom at Arles, they can sit in the painting and pose for parents. And if you’re wondering what the light cameras on the ground are for, they guide visitors to the perfect spot to take Insta-worthy shots.

Ignite All Your Senses

immersive van gogh seattle

After walking through the first few rooms, it’s time for the big show. The 360-degree, floor-to-ceiling immersive room is where families can “step into a living painting.” Beyond the visual effects that make sunflowers float to the ceiling, crabs crawl across walls and wagons mosey along haystack-lined roads, kids will love the sound effects, music and playful floor projections that draw in Van Gogh fans of all ages.

immersive van gogh seattle

While parents and big kids will appreciate lounging in the beach chairs listening to the narration, tots will love the freedom of the space. They can chase the floor projections darting from one spot to the next as scenes change. Tiny dancers will love strutting their stuff when the music starts and the spirit moves them. But kids may also enjoy finding a seat and marveling at the spectacle that surrounds them. We love the comfy rugs on the floor, too because they make sweet spots for tots to watch the show.

Turn Inspiration into Art

seattle immersive van gogh

If being surrounded by Van Gogh’s visually stunning creations has you itching to create something yourself, there’s an area to sit down and do just that beyond the immersive room. Here kids and parents can color one of Van Gogh’s famous works of art, adding their own touches. Finally! Time to sit and color with your kiddo. Crayons and hand sanitizer are the tools at your disposal. When you’re finished, project your work into a digital frame at the “Paint with Vincent” station. Kids can line up the picture, press the red button and watch their work magically appear on the screen in front of them. What a thrill! Take your artwork home or hang it on the wall for others to enjoy.

Take a Virtual Walk with Van Gogh

immersive van gogh seattle

The final piece of the experience is the VR presentation of “A Day in the Life of the Artist.” Once you put on the headset, you’ll be transported to the French countryside where a simple stroll turns into a learning experience. It’s a chance to hear intriguing stories behind some of Van Gogh’s most iconic paintings. The VR experience lasts 10 minutes, and is included in the VIP package. Families can also add it on day-of for $5 each. We’re guessing big kids will jump at the chance to try this out—because, VR. And if you’ve got younger kiddos with you, consider a tag team approach with your parenting partner—you definitely won’t be able to keep an eye on roaming kids with the headset on. The sets are recommended for kids ages 6 and up.

Parent Planning Tools:

van gogh immersive seattle

1. Plan a little over an hour, give or take, for the experience. This will give you enough time to watch the presentation in the immersion room, sit and color for a while and then dive into the VR experience, without feeling too hurried.

2. If you want to avoid the crowds (and save some money too!), get tickets for a mid-week time slot.

3. The experience is super stroller-friendly so bring one along for antsy toddlers or non-walkers. Babies in carriers are easy too. Who knows—your little bundle may even sleep through the exhibit!

4. There are lots of public parking lots in the area, including at the exhibit building. Plan to pay anywhere from $3-$10 to park and plan on a short walk, depending on where you’re able to snag a spot.

5. Remember to check out the COVID policies and cleaning protocols so you know what to expect when visiting with kids. Staying socially distant, wearing masks and hand sanitizer stations are all part of the protocol here.

Important COVID info.: Please remember to bring your proof of vaccination or negative COVID test.
