If you think googling ‘snow near me’ in Southern California is an oxymoron—think again! You don’t have to leave Southern California to play in real snow with these nearby winter wonderlands the whole family will enjoy

While planning your winter bucket list of activities in Los Angeles, you might be thinking about your favorite local holiday celebrations or which spot you should go to pick out your perfect Christmas tree. And while playing in Southern California snow doesn’t typically rank high on the list in this sunny region, thanks to some pre-winter storms, California mountains are covered in snow—making for some early openings for our local mountain resorts. Whether you’re a new or avid skier, a thrill-seeking snowboarder, into sledding or just want to make some snowballs making and throw them, this is the season to go have fun with the frozen stuff—even in SoCal.

10 Mountain Town Airbnbs to Book for Your Fall Getaway

The Best Ski Resorts for Kids & Families in 2020

These Are the Top Destinations for Fall Travel, According to Latest Airbnb Report

Travel in 2020 looks different than in years past. There is a greater need for disinfection and cleanliness. Airbnb just announced that 1.2 million listings globally have been granted the Enhanced Cleaning Protocol (ECP) highlight since it launched in June.

Hosts on Airbnb continue to prioritize health and safety as guests look for healthy and responsible getaways. Listings receive The Enhanced Clean highlight after hosts attest to following sanitization guidelines to support safer travel. The program, which is available to hosts in 220+ countries and regions, is informed by guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States and Europe and advice from former Surgeon General of the United States, Vivek Murthy.

Airbnb

Airbnb offers unique homes with more space for their money and more control over their environment, such as entire-home listings with private amenities like kitchens and swimming pools. Bookings for listings opted into the Enhanced Cleaning Protocol are more likely to be for family stays

Airbnb
Airbnb’s Enhanced Cleaning Initiative continues to evolve and expand as our community adapts to a new world of travel and health precautions. As of this month, hosts in more than 220 countries and regions have access to Airbnb’s expert-backed Enhanced Cleaning Protocol in 61 languages, including a detailed handbook and other resources. Additionally, Airbnb has issued Health and Safety Guidelines for its entire community.

The top ten countries with the highest number of Enhanced Clean listings on Airbnb are:

  • United States
  • France
  • United Kingdom
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • Mexico
  • Brazil
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Greece

Airbnb hosts in other places have also started following the new cleaning standards. Barbados, Korea, Japan and Portugal are also top ranking locations for Enhanced Clean listings, compared to total listings available.

Airbnb
“Cleanliness and safety are top of mind for our hosts and guests. In the last weeks, hosts have embraced and adopted our new rigorous guidelines, with thousands more attesting to the Enhanced Cleaning protocol everyday. This effort shows how our hosts are dedicated to the highest standards and committed to keeping their guests and communities safe,” said Catherine Powell, Head of Hosting at Airbnb.

According to internal Airbnb guest review data, 95 percent of all Airbnb reviews show that guests are satisfied with cleaning, scoring it at 4 or 5 stars (out of five stars) after their stays.  Since the program launched, Enhanced Clean listings have had an average cleanliness rating of 4.8 stars, according to guest reviews.

Airbnb
In addition, as more guests opt to travel by car instead of plane, the percentage of bookings made on Airbnb within 200 miles has grown in the last months. Below are the top ten destinations with the highest concentration of Airbnb Enhanced Clean listings:

  • Telluride, Colorado, US
  • Destin, Florida, US
  • Walla Walla, Washington, US
  • Panama City Beach, Florida, US
  • Oregon Coast, US
  • Peak District, Hope Valley, UK
  • Grant County, Washington, US
  • Big Sky, Montana, US
  • Mammoth Lakes, California, US
  • Winter Park, Colorado, US

Airbnb hosts need to comply with guidance from governments or health authorities in their local jurisdictions. They remain committed to working with local governments, medical experts and other authorities to help ensure appropriate precautions are taken and inform the reopening of communities and their tourism economies.

Visit the permanent kiosk in the visitor center, where a Big Bear Mountain Resort representative is available daily to assist with lift ticket purchases and equipment fittings making for a seamless check-in process once you hit the slopes.

Also new and noteworthy: Big Bear Mountain Resort's Bear Mountain has expanded its sun deck from 13,000 sq. ft. to 26,000 sq. ft., creating additional space for outdoor seating, dining, special events/concerts and more.

Additionally, a perfect addition of off mountain activities is the new 2-story ropes course at Big Bear Snow Play: The 2-level ropes course, which opened in August, includes an 80-foot zip line and a number of challenges to reward and excite young and old alike. State-of-the-art safety harnesses will keep guests secure as they traverse the course, the first and only one of its kind in  Big Bear.

Don't miss a visit to the Bear Mountain Adventure Academy. It makes it easy on families by having kids' ski rentals, lift tickets and sports school registration in one spot. Further, there are fun things to do while waiting like coloring and a Burton snowboard practice game. Even more, you'll find food and drink including artisan pizzas, a full-service coffee bar and spirits. Also, you'll appreciate the parent viewing area where you can watch your half-pint learn to ski or snowboard.

On the other hand, if your snow angels want to skip the lift lines and go tubing, slide over to the Grizzly Ridge Tube Park at Snow Summit or Big Bear Snow Play (both with Magic Carpet conveyor belts) for easy downhill fun.

Another flurry of activities can be found at the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain. First, grab your little one and bobsled together down the 1/4 mile long mountain track. Second, ride the Soaring Eagle where you fly through the sky at up to 28 mph! Then, you can tube down the Alpine Slide and play in the snow. Finally, you can play miniature golf and try the go-karts. Your crew will have a blast!

Plus, two good places to stay as a family are The Lodge at Big Bear Lake with free Wi-Fi and a walk to the village or Big Bear Frontier where we recommend the cabins that sleep up to 12––and furry friends are welcome too.

It's a no-frills tube park with stairs to get to the top of the slopes. The cost is $20 per person, but kids 36 inches and under are free (with paying adult). Also, good to note that parking is ten dollars.

Snow Valley

Snow Valley

This smaller mountain is great for snow angels at the beginner or intermediate level. It's also less crowded than big brother mountain (Big Bear) which is 30 minutes further away. For the little ones, there's the Children's Learning Center with full and half-day classes where snow bunnies can learn to ski or snowboard (ages 4-12). Moreover, there's a snow play area where kiddos can sled for a fee. Another perk: kids six and under ski free (with a paid adult). You can do this trip up and back on the same day. However, if you decide to stay overnight, we recommend the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, with a fitness room and restaurant. (It's about a 30-minute drive).

Book It: An Awesome Story time for Every Day of the Week

A Tour of DC Through 6 Kid’s Books

Some of the best discoveries are made by accident and chances are the woolly mammoth tooth discovered accidentally by a 12-year-old boy on vacation is a memento he won’t soon forget.

Jackson Hepner was visiting The Inn at Honey Run in Millersburg, Ohio with his family earlier this summer when he stumbled on an incredible discovery. Jackson was playing in a creek when he found an odd, ridged object sticking out of the mud. With his family’s help and some Googling they realized that they might have a woolly mammoth or mastodon tooth on their hands.

Jackson’s family together with the inn’s owners reached out to several local professors to check out their finding. P. Nick Kardulias of the College of Wooster’s Program of Archeology inspected the item along with Jackson’s description of where it was found and confirmed that it is likely the tooth of a woolly mammoth. Both woolly mammoth and mastodon fossils have been discovered throughout the state.

Like any great discovery, the best part is sharing it with others. In his note to the experts Jackson wrote, “I would like to have my tooth back in my hands as soon as possible. I want to show my friends.”
