Makeup is expensive. It just is. It’s easy to drop hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on cosmetics every year, so when the opportunity arises to save a little money, we consider that a major win. Whether you wear a full face or just like a little light enhancement, the rule is: brows, lashes, lips. If you only have a few minutes, or prefer knocking out your look fast, hitting those three products will frame your face and bring out your natural beauty even more. When mascara is that important, making sure it’s only the good stuff matters. But you don’t have to spend a ton, either. Not when you’re in the market for the best drugstore mascara.

You could stroll the makeup department at the store, but inexpensive and easy are two of our favorite things. Although these are brands found at drugstores, we snagged them all from Amazon. As a bonus, the reviews speak for themselves (you won’t find that on a drugstore shelf). These Amazon customers swear each one is the best drugstore mascara, but they’re all fabulous. Plus, most of them are less than $10. You can afford to experiment to find your new favorite.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara

Length + volume is the combo this mascara from Maybelline uses to create lift that almost 127,000 Amazon reviewers rave about.

Real Review: I never used to bother with mascara at all because my lashes are so short all that would end up happening was I would go from having short lashes, to still having short lashes that are now clogged up with black gunk. However, I was required to get some mascara for a shoot and went with this one because I loved the brush and OH. MY. GOD. People asked me if I had fakes on! I’m literally obsessed and it’s a total game changer for when you want a more natural, cute look to your eyes without eyeliner or crazy shadow. Can’t say it did much for volume (and I admittedly probably used too much because like I said, not an experienced mascara user), but the length it gives is insane. Don’t think. Just buy. —Destini Moody

Real Review: I read several reviews and decided to try the Milani Brand. I am thrilled with the product. It will stay on all day until you remove it at night, and you can see the little tubular lengtheners. Petroleum Jelly

Beauty Hack: Use for a natural highlighter. Apply to the high points of the face and eyelids as an all-natural highlighter for a quick, subtle glow.

Steam

Beauty Hack: For detoxing skin. Run a washcloth under warm water and apply it to your face before your masks for optimal results. This opens the pores and allows the product to really absorb into the skin. You can also boil water on the stove and hold a towel over your head to create a makeshift steam room.

Business Card

Beauty Hack: Use for clean, precise mascara. Hold a business card behind your lashes as you apply mascara. This lets you get to the root of your lashes without leaving smudges on your skin.

Peppermint Oil

Beauty Hack: Use for plump lips. Peppermint oil offers lips a natural plump, so add a drop or two onto your lipstick next time you apply.

Glycerin Soap

Beauty Hack: Use to keep brows in place. Dip your spoolie in a little glycerin soap and brush your brows upward for a full look and to keep them in place.

Scotch Tape

Beauty Hack: Use for eyeliner application. Use scotch tape as a guide for the perfect cat eyeliner.

Contact Solution

Rawpixel

Beauty Hack: Use to prolong mascara. If your mascara has gone clumpy, mix in a little contact solution to make the tube last longer.

Propped Pillows

Beauty Hack: If you want to de-puff your face, sleep with two pillows propped up instead of one to help fluid drain from the face.

Lipstick

Beauty Hack: Use as a cheek stain. If you don’t have time (or the makeup stash in your bag!), use a little lipstick as a stain on your cheeks for a fresh, healthy flush.

Frozen Spoons

Beauty Hack: Keep two spoons in the freezer and place them under your eyes to de-puff any under-eye bags or dark circles when needed.

Face Mist

Beauty Hack: Spritz it on throughout the day for an instant skin (and spirit) pick-me-up. You can make your own face mist by steeping a couple of bags of white tea with the zest from one lemon in boiling hot water. Let it sit at room temperature before transferring it to a spray bottle and letting it chill in the fridge. Spray your face whenever you’re feeling the baby blues. Make a new batch after a week.

Baby Oil

An A-to-Z Guide to Natural Skincare Products for Babies & Toddlers

The Top Holiday Gifts of 2020 for Every Age & Stage

DIY Beauty Hacks because You Need Self Care Right Now

Photo: Keren de Zwart

My husband and I both work full time in demanding jobs. To add insult to injury, my husband travels for work. A lot. When he’s home, he takes the kids to school and I pick them up. Their regular routine has them leaving the house 30 minutes later than I do. So when my husband travels and I have to get them out of the house earlier, chaos naturally ensues. To have even a chance of getting to work at a reasonable hour, I’ve implemented a series of tricks:

1. Pick out clothes the day before. This goes for everybody. My baby isn’t picky, but it’s nice to lay out clothes for him anyway. It’s good to choose my own so I’m not holding a screaming baby with a toddler attached to my leg trying to choose an outfit that doesn’t scream “hot mess” in the morning. This is most important for my three year old daughter, who can be especially difficult in the morning. We’ve made a game of looking at the weather together and picking out everything from underwear to colored hair bands so there are no power struggles in the morning.

2. Meal Prep. I HATE cooking. I mean, I truly loathe it. If I could order take out all day every day, I would. I found myself spending an ungodly amount of money on food out during the week, but what ultimately got me to meal plan was a toddler that stopped eating lunch at school because she was so picky. Now, I plan food for both lunch and dinner, shop late Saturday night (in an empty grocery store sans kids with my favorite playlist or podcast going), and put together one Crockpot and one oven meal on Sunday. The kids’ school lunches are pre-packed (cut up fruit, crackers, yogurt) so all I’m doing on weeknights is re-heating our dinner, making sandwiches, and defrosting breast milk, which takes enough time as is. You’ve heard it a million times before, but for my family, meal planning really has meant healthier food, on-time dinners, and considerably less money spent. Bonus points for being able to eat lunch at my desk for those days when I don’t have a prayer of getting into the office before 9:00 am.

3. Tandem Tooth Brushing. If you haven’t already picked up on it, my daughter is a tad hard-headed. Trying to get ready and herd small children with any hope of showing up to work on time is a feat on its own, so we’ve made a game of getting ready together, including brushing our teeth, seeing who can get dressed the fastest, and “putting makeup on” together (she with her pretend set or a clean brush). To my daughter, it feels like a fun thing to do together, rather than a trick to get her to put her pants on instead of asking her 20 times and listening to her complain that the pants she wore three days in a row are suddenly not comfortable anymore. And in reality, it really is a fun way to spend the otherwise mundane morning tasks.

4. Get Up Early. I am NOT a morning person, and that hasn’t changed despite 3.5 years of children waking me up before dawn. I used to hit snooze until the absolute last second possible (and often still do) but I’ve found that 30 minutes of less sleep for me doesn’t actually make a difference in terms of my level of exhaustion, and being completely–or mostly–ready before the kids get up can be a sanity saver. It has also helped me minimize the amount of time I’ve left the house with mascara on only one eye or mismatched shoes (yes, that really happened). Be warned, though. If you’ve established a routine of getting ready with your kid, (see number three above,) you may brush your teeth twice or re-straighten your hair to avoid a meltdown.

5. When all else fails, bribe. I’m not above bribery. After a long week of my husband being out of town, I’ve been known to entice my daughter into the car in less than 15 minutes with the promise of a donut or some iPad time on the way to school. My husband and I refer to this as our “nuclear option,” and like it sounds, we try to use it as sparingly as possible. Careful with those sharp toddlers, though! My daughter is an expert manipulator and by day four or five of my husband traveling, she knows just a little push back on the morning routine will buy her an entire episode of Paw Patrol on the way to school.

What are some of your best tips for efficiency in the morning with little ones?

Keren is a business owner x2 (flat-fee lawyer and digital marketing operations) in active pursuit of the elusive work-life balance. With a couple of demanding jobs, a husband who travels for work and two little kids, she maintains her sanity by reading and engaging in inappropriate banter with friends, family and strangers.

I don’t know about you but every day, since quarantine began 7 weeks ago, I finish multiple sentences with, “Never mind, what does it matter anyway…”

Don’t wear your school shoes out to play!

When did you guys last get a bath? Did I shower today?

It’s past bedtime!

Did you stain that shirt?

How long have you been playing that game/ watching that show?

I was going to do my hair but…

I don’t like that kind of bread.

Your socks don’t match.

Hairspray, perfume, mascara? No? what does it matter?

And I don’t mean this in a depressing way like we’ve lost all hope. What I mean is that there are so many things that normally would matter but we are completely far outside the realm of normal. These things don’t matter because all that matters right now is to stay home. Keep those that live in it alive. And wash your hands.

So many little things that we would normally care about really don’t matter right now. Seriously! They are so small and really are completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. We have much bigger things to worry about. They aren’t asking for very much- just stay home. And yet at times, it feels like a lot is being asked of us. Stay home?! But what about school, work, baseball, getting a haircut, going shopping, planning a vacation… Seeing our family?

It is hard to believe we are really going through this. Everything has changed. Does anyone else wake up each morning and ask themselves, is this seriously happening? Seriously?? A worldwide crisis, a pandemic? But it is. And when we may feel at our very most vulnerable, we have to put our big girl pants on and suck it up. Why? Because we have to be there to support our kids. They are young. They are small. And they are going through this too and it can be just as hard on them.

BUT it is only temporary. I am an optimist at heart. Just ask my Mom. She has always told me I wear rose-colored glasses. Let’s look on the bright side and think of all of the things we have been able to do since the orders or mandate to stay at home. All of us have wide and varied experiences at home but let’s think of all of the new things we have had time to do here.

1. Cooking! And dinners together as a family every single night. Saying prayers together. Being thankful for what we have.

2. Gardening, landscaping, and enjoying the weather outdoors. Thank goodness it is Spring. We have watched the trees, plants, and flowers grow!

3. We have expanded our vocabulary: Coronavirus, social distancing, shelter in place, PPE, COVID, quarantine, N95, novel virus, contact tracing… and so forth.

4. We have strengthened our abilities to telecommute, work from home, video conference, learn online, and network virtually.

5. We have been creative and have still hung out with friends by playing games together but virtually. Poker, Scavenger hunt, and so on. It is fun to get social, even from a distance. Hunter has had virtual nerf gunfights and a ukelele jam session with his BFF. Talk about resilience.

6. We have learned to become our own beauticians and taken matters into our own hands. Home haircuts, hairstyles, manicures, grooming, etc. What’s amazing is the beauticians are creating videos to show us how!

7. We have the fear of the unknown but as parents, we are strong every day for our children. We try to explain the severity of the situation in their terms. And boy is that tough.

8. We long for the day when we can all get back together. To hug, embrace, shake hands without 6 feet of distance. How will society change? Will we go back to shaking hands? Will we always wear masks in public, on planes, to the grocery store? Will we ever be able to go without hand sanitizer?

So much goes through my mind on a given day. I am afraid of the unknown, as I am sure you are too. How will we start school in the fall? When will we ever have a family vacation? Will my retirement savings get back to where it started before the pandemic?

One thing I know is that we are being stretched far—much further than we could have ever imagined but we are growing in more ways than we know. We have the gift of time right now. And a lot of it. That is until we get to the other side of this.

Can you still call it a postpartum body if your baby is one?

Actually, he’s fifteen months, but I know people don’t like it when you say your child’s age in months.

It has been fifteen months since I had my eight-pound, two-ounce baby via c-section, and I’m still not happy with how I look.

Now, don’t bombard me with your diet plans people. Thanks. In. Advance.

So here’s the deal. I’ve always been what my mom calls “curvy”. After I had Baby Boy #1, she pretty much told me that I would never get my old body back. And that really lit a fire under me. If someone tells me I can’t do something, I work my booty off just to prove them wrong. So I got into a clean-eating and exercise routine that actually had me looking better than I did before I had my baby. And I was proud of myself. Looking back, I didn’t give myself enough credit.

So I just figured that after having Baby Boy #2, I would jump right back into my clean eating and exercise routine and I would be back in my skinny jeans in no time.

NOPE. Didn’t happen.

What I didn’t realize is that when you have a toddler and a newborn, life gets a hell of a lot more hectic. Add in a full-time job, my blog, my side hustle of doing books, a husband that works full time and coaches a baseball team and a health scare with the baby, and I wasn’t doing much clean eating. What I was doing was cleaning out the fridge and pantry and the local McDonald’s while eating everything.

I did continue my workout routine. It was something that made me feel good. It gave me energy. And it was the only part of my day where I could be ALONE.

But I still look in the mirror and see that ten extra pounds that has settled around my waist like a spare tire. The bags under my eyes can’t even be covered by makeup sometimes. I thought I had running mascara one day and grabbed a makeup remover wipe to realize that it was just the dark bags under my eyes.

I looked at myself in a picture from an event I attended this summer with my husband and a few other couples. All I did was pick apart what was wrong in the picture. The tops of my arms were fat. You could see my belly sticking out. I was pale. My hair was a hot mess. All the other women were skinny and stylish and looked like they could do a makeup tutorial on a real YouTube channel. Why was I being so hard on myself? They were moms too. But I was the only one that looked like she walked to the event five miles in heels in 100-degree heat while herding dirty donkeys.

Why am I so worked up about this?

Because I have spent the last two years being someone that empowers women to be the best they can be. But also reminding them that you can’t be too hard on yourself and that no one is perfect. To not feel bad about themselves for drinking wine, or hiding in the bathroom to get some alone time, or cry in the shower because they just feel defeated because their kid drew on the wall with a Sharpie.

And I think that’s why I am so frustrated with myself now. I know that no one is perfect. But I’m stuck between, “Your body grew two beautiful babies and you are freaking busy so don’t be so hard on yourself” to “Put down the cheeseburger, Jamie. Your a*s is growing by the minute.”

So to narrow it down, I am trying to say that I am mad at myself for being too hard on myself but also mad because I can’t lose ten pounds but also craving a cheeseburger and to “Treat Yo ‘Self.”

So somewhere in the middle, there has to be a happy medium right?

I honestly think this probably encompasses a lot of moms I know. We want to be skinny and beautiful, but we also want to play with our kids in our pajamas with no makeup on, and we want to sleep late and eat a long john donut from the Rolling Pin every chance we can.

But we can’t have it all can we? Because I sure as hell haven’t slept late in the five years.

So for now, I’ll keep working out. I’ll try to be healthy, and I’ll treat myself because my life is crazy and we all need a little down time and a cheeseburger from the Big Dipper. I’ll stop trying to be perfect and just be. Be a mom. Be a wife. Be me.

Even if that mom I am has a spare tire and dark bags under her eyes.

Until next time,

Jamie

I often think about the role guilt played in my life as I rose through the corporate ranks. It was an ever-present companion, a specter. Rationally, I knew I was a competent mother—subconsciously and (at times) consciously—that nagging feeling of guilt ate away at me. I felt guilty because I was out of the house and not participating in the raising of my children 24/7.

I’ve also worked extremely hard at being the best mother I can be. My kids turned out great. All four are successful adults. They don’t resent me for working long hours. In fact, they’re proud of the achievements their mother has made.

Nonetheless, for a long time I felt extremely guilty about my decisions.

I remember a day when my daughter, Jacqueline, was two years old. Dressed in a business suit, I was walking my daughter to the babysitter while she clung to me sobbing, “Don’t go, Mommy. Don’t go!”

Jacqueline was so upset that I couldn’t bring myself to leave, yet I had to go to work. I hung around outside for a bit, crying, mascara streaming down my face. After about 10 minutes, I peeked in the window and saw Jacqueline in the center of a group of kids, laughing and bouncing a ball. She was fine, but I was a mess. As the mom of two young kids at the time (I have four kids in total) and a professional at a demanding job, guilt was my steady companion.

I know every working mother understands this. Let’s say, the baby has a fever, you still have to go to work. It doesn’t matter if your mother, husband or a perfectly competent caretaker is there to care for your child. You are the mother and you want to be there. Then, there are the looks you get when you bring store-bought cookies to the school bake sale or maybe you forget the cookies altogether. You feel the eyes of the teachers or other moms and hear them silently judging, “You are ruining your kids!”

In the earliest drafts of my book, You Are NOT Ruining Your Kids: A Positive Perspective on the Working Mother, I focused on the guilt that was always with me when the kids were little. I now understand that so much of that guilt was self-imposed. I’ve learned to let it go. I want to encourage you to let your guilt go, too.

One day, however, when I was about halfway through the first draft of my book, I realized that something was missing. I was writing about the challenges and feelings of guilt all working moms face, but I wasn’t giving equal attention to the joy. I was taking all the magic and reward of parenting for granted.

There is no greater joy than parenting and nothing is more magical than your child’s laugh, whether that child is six, 26 or older. Nothing is more rewarding than watching your child learn a new skill or accomplish a goal. No purpose or professional title is greater than the love you have for your kids.

Sheila B. Jordan is the author of the empowering read, You Are Not Ruining Your Kids: A Positive Perspective on the Working Mother, which encourages readers to focus on the rewards of parenting as a working mother rather than dwell on the challenges and feelings of guilt parents often face.

You thought you had road rage issues from commuting in LA before kids, but nothing compares with being a parent in traffic with kids past their nap time as the squabbles begin in the back seat. Instead of using the “don’t make me pull this car over” threat (empty, because you can’t even pull over on the 10 at rush hour), here are tips from savvy LA parents that will make your drive a little less stressful and a lot more fun.

  1. Mixmaster Mom: Summon your inner DJ and create a playlist for your drive. Put on the kids’ favorite tunes (yes, even ones you hate) and reserve the playlist for times just like this. Or, if it’s nap time, cue the lullaby playlist. Older kids might enjoy an LA specific theme to make them appreciate their hometown with tunes like Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty, California Dreamin’ by The Mamas and the Papas, Walking in LA by Missing Persons, I Love LA by Randy Newman or La Cienega Just Smiled by Ryan Adams.
  1. Landmark Love: Make up games to play about the landmarks you pass on a regular trek. Kids don’t know “we’ll be there in thirty minutes” but they know they’re halfway home when they see the spaceship crashing into Fry’s Electronics on the 5 at Hollywood Way. Other fun landmarks to acknowledge: shout out the moment you smell the yeasty fragrance of the Budweiser factory at the 405/Roscoe Blvd. exit, guess how many planes you will see flying over the freeway as you crawl past LAX on the 405 or 105. If you drive by the skyscrapers on the 101 or 110, see how many people you can see in the buildings and guess what kind of work they do, and try to spot police cars doing training at their track west of the 5 near the 405/5 split.

  1. I Spy: Usually you prefer that your kids don’t gawk at strangers, but there is no better people watching than on L.A. freeways—in particular the 10 when every car becomes a fish bowl during rush hour traffic. I Spy the Shaving Man Rapping to Will Smith. I Spy the Lady in Curlers Applying Mascara While Eating a Breakfast Burrito. I Spy a Lady That Looks Just Like Taylor Swift; wait is that really Taylor Swift? L.A. freeways are a place to see and be seen.

  1. Catch Carpool Crime: Deputize the kids!  Put them on the lookout for anyone breaking the 2 or more person in the carpool lane law. There are over 531 miles of car pool lanes on freeways all over Los Angeles, so plenty of opportunity to catch the perpetrators.
  1. Follow the Map: Kids have loved maps since their Dora days. If you still have your old Thomas Guide, pull that out, or load Google Maps or Waze on your phone. Kids love to zoom in and follow where they are going. Have them come up with their traffic reporter radio names and be your personal navigator/traffic reporter.  They’ll love figuring out Sigalert as much as you’ll love being forewarned about an upcoming accident.
  1. Car Treasure: Have a stash of just-for-the-car items for kids to play with or read while you’re driving. You could even create suspense and anticipation by waiting until a particular exit, say Wilshire, before you break out the stash. Some ideas to include: activity books, board books, maze balls, special stuffed animal, teething ring, action figures. Avoid anything that’s too hard or heavy that if you had to stop suddenly might fly through the car and injure someone.
  1. Spontaneous Story: You probably don’t feel like making up a story after a long day at work to keep kids entertained while you’re commuting, so don’t. Start with a sentence then pass it to the next person in the car to continue, the story, and so on. Even toddlers love to get in on this, and they always take a story in a new and unusual direction (usually involving dinosaurs). Use things you see along the way to help you tell it. Start a story about a man working out inside the 24 Hour Fitness wearing a purple hat you spied at the 405/101 interchange, for example.

  1.  Latte Lane: The kids are finally asleep but you need coffee to stay awake for the rest of the journey. There are a few brilliantly placed coffee shops with drive-thru’s near freeway exits. Some Starbuck’s locations: Highland and Santa Monica near the 101, Riverside and Tujunga off the 170, San Fernando and Walnut (near Burbank Blvd) off the 5, Nordhoff and Sepulveda near the 405. Use the handy drive-thru store locator tool on Starbucks.com to find the location most convenient for your commute.

  1. Pass the Buck: Sometimes you just…can’t. So let someone else! Call up your best actor friend or the kids’ grandparents on FaceTime and ask them to help you get through that last half hour. They can chat, sing, and entertain your kids for a while. Then promise you’ll return the favor.
  1. Resort to the Classics: Channel your own family road trip games and enjoy a couple of rounds of ABCs of (insert theme), license plate state finding, word association (you say a word and the kids have to say another word that relates and starts with the last letter of the word you said) or truth or dare. Dare them to do something silly that they might be seen doing in the car, like pretending to pick their noses or yell “Hello Los Angeles, I love you!” out the window. We promise we’ll shout back.
