Through snow and rain, heat, and gloom of night, your local mail carriers deliver your letters and packages directly to your door (or at least your nearest mailbox). And, during the season of goodwill and cheer, they deserve major props. From mail carrier thank you cards to gifts for mail carriers, here are six ways to thank your mail carrier. The best part? All of these are easy for kids and fun, too (think baking cookies!).
Write a letter!

Even if you don't know your mail person by name, you can still address them in a general way, such as "Our Favorite Mailman" or "Our Faithful Carrier." A simple note that says how much you appreciate the hard work they do (extra cute if your kids can write it out) will go a long way in making your postal worker feel special. Put it in an envelope and use stickers instead of stamps. (After all, they love mail, right?) You can also nab this free, downloadable template if you need a little help!
As always, a thank you card is a lovely gesture. Let the kids draw a little picture or get creative or use a printable like this one to make a little note to attach to the flag of your mailbox. Winter is here, and while Portlanders know that means rain in the Rose City, it also means snow in the mountains. That’s why now is the perfect time to take the kids skiing or snowboarding at a nearby Portland ski resort over a long weekend or whenever you’ve got time. Offering everything from lessons on the gentlest bunny hills around to expert black diamond runs your kids can aspire to conquer, these spots top our list for winter family fun. We’ll keep wishing for more of the white stuff so you can hit the slopes with the kids all the way through March.
Fantastic Places to Ski near Portland

With close to 1,000 acres of terrain, 69 day runs, and over 300 inches of snowfall each year, there are hours of fun to be had at Skibowl. And the short drive from Portland makes it a great starting point for Portland families interested in a ski day. Beginners have lots of choices at this ski mountain, including runs at Skibowl East near the snow tube and Adventure Park, plus kiddie snowmobiles, a kiddie carousel, Frosty’s Playground, and an indoor play area when they need a break. Lessons are available for kids as young as 4 (including snowboarding), and it's easy to sign up when you get there. But Skibowl isn't just for beginners. This ski area also boasts more black diamond runs than at any other ski resort in the state.
Good to Know: Night skiing is definitely a thing at Skibowl; their 36 lighted runs easily tell that story. Part of the nighttime mountain fun? Cosmic tubing.

Meadows offers varied terrain that challenges skiers at all levels on over 2,150 acres. From Heather Canyon to South Canyon, and from Buttercup to Show Off, there’s something for everyone. For children between the ages of four and fourteen, camps, lessons, and clubs are available. You can purchase your lift ticket or season pass online in advance.
Insider Tip: For something a little different, try a snowshoe tour at Mt. Hood Meadows. They're family-friendly (although usually best for older kids) and some run through March, so you've got plenty of time to plan one this year.
Good to Know: If lessons aren't something your kids are up for, you can drop them at the Meadows Daycare. One of the only ski resorts in the nation to offer state-certified care for kids as young as 6 weeks, parents can sign kids up for the day or for a run of days so they can get in all the runs. Just be sure to get your reservations ASAP as spots are limited.
The fact you can ski for 10 months out of the year, and the addition of Summit Pass (formerly Summit Ski Area), makes Timberline an easy choice for Portland families on the hunt for a ski resort they can return to year after year. Get to know the 1,685 acres of skiable terrain at both Timberline and Summit Pass with the kids. Summit Pass is a great spot for beginning snowboarders and skiers alike. It's also where you'll find the snow tubing lanes. It's a great option for families looking for lessons and affordability. Six high-speed quads, two doubles, and one surface lift get families where they need to go. And although the two terrains aren't yet lift connected, there are plenty of shuttle options so you can try their both on your trip.
Insider Tip: Timberline's terrain parks offer everything from the Schoolyard (perfect for beginners) to Conway's big jumps. Even if the kids aren't ready for it yet, it's fun to watch others tackle the snowy jumps and rails.
Good to Know: Beginning ski lessons are available for kids as young as 4 on weekends (and holidays) only.
Located on the north side of Mt. Hood this historic ski area (it's one of the oldest in North America) offers lots of rideable terrain for first time skiers and boarders. An affordable option for families, this ski area is on the smaller size. The double chairlift will bring you to the top of the runs where you'll find gentle blues, a few greens, and one black diamond. Kids ages 7 and up can learn the ropes on the tow rope when they sign up for a group or private lesson. No matter which option you choose, the price is hard to beat.

For a full day or better yet a family weekend trip, Hoodoo Ski Area in Sisters, just outside of Bend, is a worthy destination. You'll find it at the summit of Santiam Pass, drawing visitors from all over the state, thanks to its central location. The mountain has five lifts and 34 runs that are a nice mix of green, blue, and black, so no matter how many times you've taken to the slopes (one or 100 times), you'll have plenty of powder to explore.
Insider Tip: The Autobahn Tubing park is currently closed due to staffing shortages.
Good to Know: Winter weekends here offer up a little something extra, like mountain mascot Harold the Hodag's birthday on February 18, Winter Carnival the following weekend, Ski Bike Fest in March, and more. Be sure to check their calendar for upcoming extras that are worth the drive.
Escape the speed demon crowds, and enjoy downhill’s quieter winter kin—cross-country skiing. Enjoy 24 kilometers (that's about 12 miles) of groomed trails, relative solitude, and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood once you pass frozen and snow-covered Teacup Lake in the Mt. Hood National Forest. There are groomed tracks and a skating lane, and all are groomed Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Teacup’s pristine trails stay that way because dogs and snow shoes are not allowed; that plus a friendly emphasis on a particular standard of trail etiquette. When you need to warm up, head to the Ray Garey Cabin to shake off the cold.
Insider Tip: If you're a family a first-timers, Teacup offers an array of learn-to-ski classes for kids as young as 6.
Good to Know: An Oregon Sno-Park permit is required to park here. Only pit toilets available on-site.
1. Expect shorter skiing days, especially if naps are still part of your family routine. Runs open early, so you can make the most of your day by getting up and at 'em as early as possible. Then heading back down the mountain around afternoon nap time. There's no doubt the kids will be tired after a day on the slopes.
2. Snacks and water are a must. No matter where you're eating on the mountain, everyone always seems to be hungry at the same time. Avoid meltdowns by packing extras for hungry kids, and avoid wait times by eating around peak times.
3. When it comes to buying gear, kids' growth spurts make buying a little frustrating financially, so renting is a great option. Although the one piece of gear to purchase (according to experts) is a good helmet.
4. It’s always a good idea to check weather and road conditions at ODOT's Trip Check before heading out for the day. Snow conditions on the mountain are a must too. All of these resorts have condition cameras that livestream so you can plan your day to go as smoothly as possible.

Head to the Food Court in Santa Monica place for a special, family-fun event filled with kid-friendly activities including crafts, face-painting, special musical performances, and snacks along with an appearance by Santa Claus. A reservation will be required for this event.
Good to Know: In lieu of ticket sales they are asking for a $5 donation to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital per child (over the age of 1) for attendance.
Did you know that Santa is a avid scuba diver? When the holiday season rolls around, he can be seen swimming with the sea life (and feeding them treats) inside exhibits at the Aquarium of the Pacific. That's right: Jolly Old Saint Nick puts on his flippers and gets aquatic for Christmas, and you can pose for pictures with him while he's underwater. Check with the aquarium about the times he's expected to appear.
This breakfast buffet is full of jolly good times thanks to Santa and his elves creating a festive atmosphere that's hard to beat. Hiking with Santa: Family Christmas Hike
If the thought of waiting in another long mall line with wiggly wee ones to get a picture with St. Nick isn't a jolly one, try an experience that is a bit more off the beaten path. Join Santa and his helpers on a 2.5-mile family Christmas hike around Ascott Hills Park, which is just east of DTLA. Here you can get some photos of your brood with the big guy against a Los Angeles city backdrop while getting some fresh air and exercise to boot. With free parking, free admission and views for days, this could be that unique holiday event you and the fam have been craving. There are limited spots available so make sure to reserve your spots sooner than later.
Autism Speaks invites all children within all spectrums of special needs and their families to gather before the mall opens for a sensory-friendly event to experience the time-honored tradition of a visit and photos with Santa. Reservations recommended.

Things to Do: With over 12 miles of sparking sand beaches—public beach access and parking is abundant if your hotel or rental isn’t beach adjacent—the first thing you're going to want to do is slather on some sunscreen and play in the surf. Coligny Beach Park (12 S. Forest Beach Dr.) has earned a reputation for being one of the most fam-friendly beaches due to their fabulous fountain (perfect for cooling off), clean bathrooms and swings in the shade. Hard-packed beaches and paved public pathways, means that Hilton Head Island is heaven on earth for bike enthusiasts. Rent a bike for a day or a week and have it delivered (and picked up) at your location. Be sure to ride your bike on the beach at low tide for an unforgettable experience.
Recently voted the number one favorite beach town by Travel and Leisure, St. Simon's Island is laid back fun with a small town vibe. Similar to Hilton Head, the hard-packed sandy beaches are perfect for strolling, biking, and building sandcastles in. And with a dedicated business district, you've got lots of options for dining and entertainment, too.
Things to Do: In addition to the beach and biking that should be at the top of your list, a visit to Fort Frederica National Monument—a Georgia State Park historical site that was once a thriving community in colonial Georgia—offers a nice history lesson and break from the beach. Or perhaps get on the water with the Lady Jane Shrimp Boat to trawl through the marshes to discover the spoils of the sea: pufferfish, huge sting rays, and even a few shrimp have been known to find their ways on board.

Things to Do: While any of the beaches on Jekyll Island are sure to please, don't pass up a chance to take the littles to Driftwood Beach. Located on the north end of the island, it's dotted with sun-bleached, beached, and gorgeous remains of live oaks that are as beautiful as they are entertaining to climb on. Jekyll is also home to Georgia’s only rehabilitation center for endangered sea turtles. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center offers eco-experiences led by biologists and researchers about sea turtle nesting and monitoring, and the American alligator.
Historically know for being the spring break destination for colleges across the southeast, this panhandle community will surprise you with its abundance of family friendly attractions and will wow you with its beautiful turquoise water.
Things to Do: After you get your fill of the sugar-white sands and gentle gulf waves, take the crew to Beachfront Adventures for off-road buggies and zip lines, ropes courses, go karts, mini golf, an aqua maze and more. Vista Farmers Market
With over 600 free parking spaces, the Vista Farmers Market is arguably the easiest to access and it's one of the oldest in San Diego county, in operation since 1981. There's a small window for this trip, as it's dictated by bloom time, but if you're a tulip-lover, it's a must. Spanning more than 300 acres, Holland Ridge Farm is the largest pick-your-own flower farm in the country. (This past fall eight million bulbs were planted.) In addition to picking dozens of varieties, the farm offers tons of other activities and diversions. Meet and feed mini goats and donkeys at the petting zoo, hop on a free hay ride, fuel up at food trucks selling food and drink on-site, and grab tons of photo ops with the blooms, a giant clog, the "water dike", and Insta-ready frames. Plus: pony rides. Opening is dependent on the tulips, but April 8 is currently the target date. (You can buy tickets prior to that. Check the website for on-sale date, TBD.)

Regular hours at this 500-acre outdoor museum resume on April 6. (Tickets are on sale now. They are released in batches and must be purchased in advance.) Dedicated to highlighting the connection of art, nature and people, the center features large-scale works on a Hudson Valley landscape of rolling hills and wide-open spaces. It's a great place to visit in the fall, due to some stunning fall foliage, but it's also a wonderful place to visit to soak in the promise of spring and get some fresh air. The Long Island Aquarium is home to one of the largest all-living, closed-system coral reef displays in the Western hemisphere! You'll find all kinds of animals here, including seals, sea lions, penguins, sea otters, butterflies, insects, seahorses, jellyfish and many more! Sadly, the Touch Tank is closed due to Covid-19, but you can book an interactive experience such as a Penguin Encounter or Sea Lion Selfie for an additional fee. You can visit this NYC-area gem for free! Formerly the estate of early 20th-century lawyer and businessman (and horticulture enthusiast) Samuel J. Untermeyer, the Untermeyer Gardens Conservancy a public park in Yonkers. The 43-acre green space dramatically overlooks the Hudson River and provides amazing views of the Palisades. The gardens include several points of interest including the Temple of Love, the Walled Garden and the Vista. Some areas of the gardens fell into disrepair, and are currently being restored.
Good to know: LEGOLAND Discovery Westchester and iFly Westchester (indoor skydiving) are both 15 minutes away.
Visit to see what happened on a working farm in New Jersey from 1890 to 1910. Historical interpreters work the farm just like back in the day, planting and harvesting crops, caring for animals, building fences, and shearing sheep. They also tell visitors about farm life at the turn of the century. It's free to visit, and the best day to do so is Saturday, when the bulk of activities take place.

Luna Park
Yes, Coney is open and ready for you! Luna Park (home to the Cyclone, which turns 95 this year), Thunderbolt and Steeplechase, as well as lots of other less hair-raising rides opened April 2. Deno's Wonder Wheel, where you'll find the 102-year-old eponymous ride and many others especially good for little ones, opens April 10. Deno's unveiled its new "family thrill" coaster The Phoenix in 2021, and Luna Park promises new attractions and environmentally-friendly pedestrian plazas. Good to know: In 2021, Luna Park offered only pay-one-price, unlimited ride wristband admission, the cost of which was a bit steep; this season you can buy individual tickets for rides. And remember: the New York Aquarium, with its new, interactive Playquarium is up the boardwalk and legendary pizzeria Totonno's is around the corner.
Drive from NYC: Depends on where you're coming from, but the D, N, F and Q trains will take you right there.
For some large-scale art inside (also with great views) head to Dia: Beacon, the upstate outpost of the foundation dedicated to commissioning single artist projects, realizing site-specific works, and showcasing the work of a group artists from the 1960s and 70s. Similar to contemporary art center Mass MoCA in the Berkshires, you'll find spacious galleries and engaging art here. Artists whose work in on view include Dan Flavin, Richard Serra, Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt and Charlotte Posenenske. The museum is open Friday to Monday, and you must make a reservation in advance.

Jersey City
Liberty Science Center
Just across the river, Jersey City has a lot going on, and you can even get there by train. If you've never been (and even if you have) we highly recommend the Liberty Science Center, which offers tons of engaging exhibits and activities for kids big and small. Right now, you'll find a Paw Patrol exhibit, Wobbly World for little ones, a Minecraft exhibit and a live butterfly experience. (Read our complete guide to visiting Liberty Science Center here.)

This colorful holiday is all about excess. But while we love all the buttery, sugary, deep-fried goodness that this epic celebration is known for, we aren’t huge fans of all the cheap, wasteful junk that passes as decorations this time of year. So we committed to making a Mardi Gras mask from things we already had around the house. From old costume jewelry, we haven’t worn in years to craft paints on the verge of drying up to a handful of colorful feathers, we pulled together a magical mask without making more waste. Party on!
What You'll Need
1. Creativity: All these materials are optional, and we recommend just looking through what's in your recycling bin, craft area and jewelry box for any items that will work. We used the following.
2. A sheet of yellow foam paper for the mask base. We were out of yellow paint, so this was the solution! Before we stumbled on this at the bottom of the craft box, we had sliced a rectangle of cardboard off the box that held the garbage bags.
3. Paint, markers or glitter glue. Traditional Mardi Gras colors are yellow, green and purple, but we promise, any colorful outfit will be welcome on Mardi Gras.
5. Feathers and glue.
6. 3-4 rubber bands connected into a daisy chain.
7. An old beaded necklace that we deconstructed.
Other suggestions: Colorful cereal, macaroni or other pasta, beans, glitter, googley eyes, sequins or gems.
What to Do
1. Cut a mask shape out of your base. Leave a little extra space up top to hold plenty of feathers or other decorations.
2. Draw a simple diamond pattern. If you have paint, outline a simple diamond pattern (a traditional Mardi Gras motif) and have your child paint it in.
3. Decorate! Now that you have a simple, Mardi Gras-themed based, just go nuts! We used two layers of feathers for the top, then decorated with beads.
4. Use a hole punch or scissors to make two holes for the rubber band.
